#Healthyfood #Cabbage Processes Immunomodulatory Activity Against #AllergicDiseases, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprise the body's defense system against diseases.

The immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections. Besides foods and nutritional supplements, herbs also play an important role in helping the immune system defend against viruses and bacteria attacks.

Immunomodulatory activity is an action that improves the underactive immune function that is susceptible to the invasion of the foreign microorganism and inhibits the overactive immune system that causes autoimmune diseases.

In other words, the immunomodulatory activity involved in antimicrobial agents is to modulate the genes involved in immune reactions, or of the neurohormonal system which regulates immune functions and any toxic or immunotoxic effects such as allergic reactions or destruction of immune effectors, that may cause harm to the body or interfere with the body normal function.

The overactive immune system is a class of autoimmune diseases or chronic inflammatory diseases caused by the immune system attacking the body's tissue, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus,.... and multiple sclerosis.

The widespread chronic inflammatory diseases in modern society are a burden to humans because of life-long debilitating illnesses, increased mortality, and high costs for therapy and care.

The underactive or weakened immune system is caused by a primary immune deficiency or acquired immune deficiency. may not protect the body against foreign organisms in initiated infection.

Sometimes, temporarily weakening the immune system may also be caused by the intake of certain conventional medicine, such as chemotherapy or drugs that treat cancer.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

In findings a natural whole for the improvement of immune functioning, researchers examined the immunomodulatory effect and mechanism of Lactococcus lactis A17 (A17), isolated from Taiwan fermented cabbage, on ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized mice.

In live (A17-A) and heat-killed A17 (A17-H) orally administered to OVA-sensitized BALB/c mice effects, researchers found that live (A17-A) and heat-killed A17 (A17-H) induced allergic effects by increasing the

* B-cell response that was modulated by diminishing IgE production and raising OVA-specific IgG2a production and the T-cell response that was modulated by increasing IFN-γ production and decreasing IL-4 production.

* Furthermore, the mRNA expression of NOD-1, NOD-2, and TLR-4 associated with the expression of inflammation and infection was down-regulated by A17.

In other words, a naïve Lactococcus lactis A17 strain exerted a significant immunomodulatory activity against allergic diseases via oral administration

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "the ameliorative effects of A17 may be caused by modulating NOD-1 NOD-2, and TLR-4 expression".

Taken together, cabbage processes immunomodulatory activity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Lycopene#Extracted from Tomatoes (LycT) Inhibited Proteins and Genes Associated with the Onset of #LiverCancer, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath your diaphragm and above your stomach.

The liver not only plays an essential role that filters the blood from the digestive system but also produces bile to build strong cell membranes, produce vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Furthermore, the liver also aids digestive function to absorb nutrients from food intake and protect the body against free radicals in the body through its antioxidant capacity.

Liver cancer is chronic a condition characterized by of controlled growth of hepatocellular cells in the liver due to DNA alternation.

Since the organ is a soft tissue with fewer nerves, most liver cancer patients are diagnosed in the later stage of cancer.

Liver cancer remains the fifth most common malignancy in men and the eighth in women worldwide. According to the statistic, in the US, approximately, 42,030 new cases of liver cancer will be diagnosed in 2019, including 29,480 in men and 12,550 in women.

Sadly, liver cancer also will cause the death of approximately 31,780 people, including 21,600 men and 10,180 women in 2019. Believe it or not, liver cancer death rates have increased by over 2% per year since 2007

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common form of primary liver cancer.

The grade of liver cancer is depending on the tendency of spreading. Low-grade cancers usually grow more slowly and are less likely to spread while high-grade cancers indicate otherwise.

Out of the many risks associated with the onset of liver cancer, some researchers that long-term excessive alcohol drinking may be the culprit which causes the rise of liver cancer in the US.

Linda Carroll wrote on NBC news." Severe alcohol-related liver disease is on the rise, a new study suggests. Experts say the increase may be due to heavy binge drinking, especially in young adults.

And, "...while there has been little change in the rate of people developing alcoholic fatty liver disease, there appears to be an increase in those who are at greater risk of cirrhosis, liver cancer, and death, according to the study published in JAMA"

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

In finding a potential compound for the prevention of liver cancer, researchers examined the effects of lycopene extracted from tomatoes (LycT) on N-Nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA)-induced hepatocarcinogenesis.

In a study of female BALB/c mice randomly divided into four groups, the Control, NDEA (200 mg NDEA/kg b.w. given i.p.), LycT (5 mg/kg b.w. given orally on alternate days) and LycT + NDEA group, researchers found that* Lycopene treatment inhibited the uncontrolled proliferation in the liver of NDEA associated with the high expression of cell-proliferation (P ≤ 0.001) in NDEA mice observed by the increased expression of genes (PCNA, Cyclin D1, and p21) associated with tumorigenesis compared to control.

* Furthermore, elevated expression of parameters associated with cancer expression in NDEA mice was also inhibited by the injection of lycopene extract compared to the control.

* The aforementioned parameters correlated to the alterations in hepatic ultrastructure in the NDEA group were also inhibited by the lycopene extract.

* Moreover, according to the hepatic electron micrographs, LycT + NDEA group showed also increased macrophages, apoptotic bodies, and well-differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), compared to undifferentiated HCC observed in the NDEA-treated group.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "This study demonstrates that dietary supplementation with LycT has a multidimensional role in preventing HCC development".

Taken together, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered a supplement for the prevention of liver cancer pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cabbage's BCE-I Mainly Consisted of Galactose and Arabinose Exerts Anti-Metastatic and Induced Apoptotic Activities Via Innate Immune Cell Activation

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissue of a specific organ.
Most cases of invasive cancer can spread to other organs in the body via lymph or blood.

According to the statistics provided by the Cancer Institute, between n 2011–2015, the number of new cases of cancer is 439.2 per 100,000 men and women per year (based on 2011–2015 cases).

The number of cancer deaths (cancer mortality) is 163.5 per 100,000 men and women per year.

In cancer cells, due to the alternation of DNA, can grow indefinitely.

Cancer cell metastasis is the process in which cancer cells break away from the primary site and travel through the blood or fluid circulation and form new tumors (metastatic tumors) in other parts of the body, similar to those of primary cancer.

The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprises the body's defense system against diseases.

Through the expression of the lines of defense, depending on the stage of pathogenic invasion, the innate immune response protects the body via a different set of interactions.

In the acute phase of infection, the macrophages in the immune system stimulate the production of inflammatory cytokines at the site of the damage. The inflammatory cytokines not only play a critical role in stopping the stimuli from entering the body but also speeds up wound healing through growth factors.

The innate immune system also can destroy damaged cells such as cancer cells through the T cell activation of B cells which in turn stimulates the production of a protein associated with the production of antibody p53.

Some researchers suggested immune system also can kill cancer cells by reacting to activating cytokines (IFN-α/β, IL-12, IL-15, IL-18, IL-21) produced by tumor cells or by other immune cells stimulated by tumor cells.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

In finding natural food for the prevention and treatment of cancer proliferation, researchers examined the anti-metastatic activities of polysaccharides in broccoli, including BCE-I mainly consisted of galactose and arabinose, whereas BCE-II mainly consisted of galacturonic acid and rhamnose, and BCE-III mainly consisted of rhamnose and galactose.

According to the results of the analysis,
* BCE-I showed the greatest enhancement of the pro-inflammatory proteins such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-12, and IL-6 secretion by stimulating murine peritoneal macrophages in the immune response.

* Furthermore, intravenous (i.v.) administration of BCE-I enhanced the lethal activity on YAC-1 tumor cells significantly and dose-dependently in an ex vivo by exhibiting the natural killer (NK) cells.

* On lung metastasis of Colon26-M3.1 carcinoma cells, prophylactic i.v. and oral administration of BCE-I significantly and dose-dependently inhibited lung metastatic activity.

In other words, the inhibitory activity of BCE-1 on lung metastasis are depending on the NK cell function in GM1 activity.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " BCE-I has potent antitumor metastatic activity, and that its anti-metastatic activity has relevance to the stimulation of NK and other immune cells".

Taken together, broccoli sprouts processed abundantly SFN may be considered supplements for inhibiting cancer cell metastasis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Butterbur Combined Other #Herbal Remedies Inhibit the Levels of Anxiety and Depression in Somatoform Disorders Patients, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural herbal medicine for the prevention and treatment of Somatoform disorders with no side effects, according to studies.

Somatoform disorders are a group of psychiatric disorders that trigger unexplained physical symptoms.

Researchers do not the exact cause of the disorders. However, genetic preposition and family history are the 2 most common risk factors associated with the onset of the condition.

The most common symptoms include persistent pain or fatigue, emotional distress, and problems functioning.

The American Family Physician in the article Somatoform Disorders suggested up to 50 percent of primary care patients present with physical symptoms that cannot be explained by a general medical condition. Some of these patients meet the criteria for somatoform disorders.

Dr. Bener A, the lead scientist, in examining the gender effects on somatoform disorders in a sample size of 1689 patients, including 892 men and 797 women suggested
* The prevalence rate of somatoform disorders among the total screened sample was 23.9%.

* Housewives (43.5%) and men in administrative posts (37.9%) reported higher somatic symptoms compared to other professions.

* Prolonged depressive reaction was significantly higher in women compared to men.

* There was a significant gender difference in certain psychiatric diagnostic categories such as depressive episode, recurrent depressive disorder, dysthymia, and brief depressive reaction.

* Backache was the most commonly reported symptom in men, whereas a headache was more common in women.

These results clearly suggested being female is a risk factor for Somatoform disorders and symptoms of Somatoform disorders. Somatoform disorders affect the different aspects of the patient depending on gender.

Women with Somatoform disorders are more likely to experience psychological symptoms compared to males.

Butterbur, found in wet, marshy, damp land, including wetlands, riversides, forests, etc., is a creeping underground plant, genus Petasites of 15 -20 species, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to the Northern Hemisphere.

Herbal medicine has been used in herbal medicine used as a pain reliever in the digestive system, including the stomach, bile ducts, duodenum, etc.

The chemical constituents of Butterbur include Petioles, petasitene and pethybrene, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-6''-O-acetylglucoside, and rutin, caffeic acid, alkaloids, S-petasin, and iso-S-petasin, etc.

With an aim to find a natural formula for the treatment of Somatoform disorder with no side effects, researchers at the University Hospital Zurich examined the effects of mixed herbal drug combination with and without butterbur (Ze 185) on patients with somatoform disorders.

In a total of 182 patients randomized for a 3-arm trial (butterbur root, valerian root, passionflower herb, lemon balm leaf versus valerian root, passionflower herb, lemon balm leaf versus placebo) compared to a fixed herbal drug combination (Ze 185 = 4-combination versus 3-combination without butterbur and placebo) in patients with somatoform disorders in a 2-week treatment in patients with somatization disorder (F45.0) and undifferentiated somatoform disorder (F45.1), researchers discovered the 4-combination was significantly superior to the 3-combination and placebo (4-combination > 3-combination > placebo) in all the primary and secondary parameters (PP-population).

The levels of anxiety and depression, according to the Anxiety (visual analog scale - VAS) and depression (Beck's Depression Inventory - BDI) are also decreased more in 4 combinations compared to others.

According to the Clinical Global Impression (CGI) rating scales, 4 combinations also showed reduced symptom severity and improved treatment response compared to 3 combinations.

The results are further reconfirmed by the ITT population analysis.

Where (ITT) analysis is a treatment in which patients enrolled and randomly allocated to treatment are included in the analysis and are analyzed in the groups to which they were randomized.

All tested subjects expressed no serious adverse effects during the course of experiments.

These results suggested that herbal preparation (Ze185) may be an efficacious and safe short-term treatment in patients with somatoform disorders.

Taken together, herbal Butterbur used alone or combined with other herbal medicine may be considered a functional herbal for prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of Somatoform disorder with no serious side effects,

#KyttaSalbe f (3 x 2 g), a Topical Including #Herbal #Comfrey Improves the Pain Scores and Quality of Life in Patients with #Osteoarthritis

Kyle J. Norton

Osteoarthritis (OA) one of the most common forms of arthritis that affects over 25 25 million people in the United States, is a chronic inflammatory disease of the joints due to wear and tear over time.

The characteristics of osteoarthritis are aching pain, stiffness, or difficulty in moving the joint or joints. The pain usually gets worse in a change of weather, at night, and in advanced diseases, the pain can occur even at rest.

Conventionally, treatment of osteoarthritis (OA) focuses on pain relief and improved physical function through pharmacological, nonpharmacological, and surgical treatments.

The most common risk factors associated with the onset of OA include genetic preposition, being overweight or obese, previous joint injury and repetitive movements, or injuries to joints (such as a fracture, surgery, or ligament tears).

the most common diseases associated with OA are
* Hypertension
According to the University Health Network Research Institute, the economic burden incurred by RA significantly exceeds that related to OA and HBP(76)(77).

* Cardiovascular disease
According to Erasmus University Medical Centre, there are associations between atherosclerosis with osteoarthritis of the knee and hand joints in women(72)(73)(78).

* Peripheral vascular disease
According to Himchan Hospital, patients with osteoarthritis are associated with a risk of asymptomatic peripheral vascular disease(80). The average vessel wall thickness of the popliteal artery was 1.09 mm in patients with generalized OA, and 0.96 mm in the matched normal reference population(79).

* Congestive heart failure
Hypertension, diabetes, and older age have been shown to increase the risk of Congestive heart failure modestly(81). Etoricoxib, anti-inflammatory painkillers showed statistically significant inhibition at 90 mg in patients with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis(82).

* Renal function impairment
According to the Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust, pain pharmacotherapies such as osteoarthritis (OA) or mixed OA and rheumatoid arthritis may increase the risk of adverse events in patients with concurrent cardiovascular (CV) or renal disease(83). The median excretion of pyridoxine and deoxypyridinoline in the OA patients as a whole was raised above values found in a healthy control population(84).

* Diabetes
Several epidemiological and experimental data support the hypothesis that diabetes could be an independent risk factor for osteoarthritis (OA)(76)(85).

Comfrey is a perennial plant in the genus of Symphytum, belonging to the family Boraginaceae, native to Europe. It has been used in herbal and traditional medicine to ease excessive bleeding or on open wounds, relieve pain and swollen, treat circulation issues, reduce cholesterol, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of osteoarthritis, researchers investigated the effect of Kytta-Salbe f (3 x 2 g), a topical including comfrey over a 3-week period with patients suffering from painful osteoarthritis of the knee.

The randomized, double-blind, bi-center, placebo-controlled clinical trial including 220 patients was conducted by Merck Selbstmedikation GmbH.

In the course of the trial, the visual analog scale (VAS) total score (primary target value) in the verum group dropped by 51.6 mm (54.7%) and in the placebo group by 10.1 mm (10.7%).

The average difference between the groups of 41.5 mm (95% confidence interval=34.8 to 48.2 mm) or 44.0% is significant (p<0.001).

The WOMAC (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities) total score (secondary target value) also improved similarly to the VAS total score.

At the end of the trial, a reduction of 60.4 mm (58.0%) was recorded for the verum group and a reduction of 14.7 mm (14.1%) for the placebo group.

The average group difference of 45.7 mm (95% confidence interval=37.1 to 54.3 mm) or 43.9% is significant (p<0.001).

The difference between the treatment groups increased systematically and significantly, in parallel with the duration of the treatment.

Based on the results, researchers said, "the superiority of the treatment with Kytta-Salbe f over that with the placebo is proven, even by means of the multi-factorial multivariate analysis for repetitive measurements. In respect of the explorative secondary target values SF-36 (quality of life), angle measurement (mobility of the knee), CGI (clinical global impression) and global assessment of efficacy by the physician and the patient, a significant superiority (p<0.001 each) of the verum group over the placebo group was also proven".

Taken together, Comfrey combined with other herbal medicine may be considered for the treatment of a remedy for painful osteoarthritis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#TotalBakkenolides Isolated from #Herbal #Butterbur After Reperfusion Markedly Reduces Brain Infarct Volume and Neurological Deficits

Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Butterbur may have a profound and strong effect on protecting the neuron integrity and validity against the onset of neuro diseases, some scientists suggested.
Neuroprotective effects are the activity that protects neurons of the brain and spinal cord.

A neurologic deficit is a condition of the brain, or spinal cord, leading to weaker muscles, nerves, or part of the body.

The causes of neurological deficit include genetic disorders, congenital abnormalities or disorders, infections, lifestyle or environmental health problems associated with malnutrition, and brain injury, spinal cord injury, or nerve injury.

People with a neurologic deficit may experience certain medical conditions and symptoms including partial or complete paralysis, loss of sensation, seizures, difficulty reading, writing, and walking, and decreased alertness.

However, some researchers suggested the most serious symptoms are poor cognitive ability, depending on the parts of the brain or spinal cord which have been affected.

According to the statistic provided by the US government, more than 16 million people in the United States are living with cognitive impairment and disease with a tendency to increase at an alarming rate, particularly in the age group of 50 and over.

People with cognitive impairment, according to the report are more than three times as many hospitals stay as individuals who are hospitalized for some other condition, causing a substantial burden to the US health care system.

Out of all neurodegenerative diseases, Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias alone are estimated to be the third most expensive disease to treat in the United States.

The Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures 20106, wrote, “ The average Medicaid payment for a person aged 65 or older with Alzheimer’s or other dementias is nine times higher than that for other beneficiaries in the same age group.”

Butterbur, found in wet, marshy, damp land, including wetland, riverside, forest, etc., is a creeping underground plant, genus Petasites of 15 -20 species, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to the Northern Hemisphere.

Herbal medicine has been used in herbal medicine used as a pain reliever in the digestive system, including the stomach, bile ducts, duodenum, etc.

The chemical constituents of Butterbur include Petioles, petasitene and pethybrene, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-6''-O-acetylglucoside, and rutin, caffeic acid, alkaloids, S-petasin and iso-S-petasin, etc.

The Second Military Medical University on finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of neurologic deficit examines the effect of the total bakkenolides, a bioactive compound isolated from the herbal Butterbur, in vitro cerebral ischemia model and oxygen-glucose deprivation of cultured nerve cells.

Oral administration of total bakkenolides showed a significant immediate effect after reperfusion at doses of 5, 10, and 20 mg/kg markedly reduced brain infarct volume and neurological deficits.

The chemical compound also was found to attenuate cell death and apoptosis in primary cultured neurons subject to 1-h hypoxia followed by 24-h reoxygenation.

The compound also protects the neurons by inhibiting the protein involved in the production of inflammatory cytokines by blocking the activation of the classical activation pathway due to the injury.

Further differentiation of the experiment, researchers discovered that total bakkenolides inhibit the activation of pathways associated with neuron apoptosis.

Dr. the lead scientists after taking into account co and confounders said, "Our results provide a strong pharmacological basis for further understanding the potential therapeutic role of total bakkenolides in cerebral ischemic disease and shed new light on its neuroprotective mechanism".

Moreover, in the examine the neurologic deficit effects of 4 novel bakkenolides - bakkenolide-Ia ( 1), bakkenolide-IIa ( 2), bakkenolide-IIIa ( 3) and bakkenolide-IVa ( 4) isolated from the extract of the rhizome of Petasites tricholobus, researchers showed the compounds 1 - 4 exert a significantly neuroprotective activity in primary cultured neurons exposed to oxygen-glucose deprivation and oxidative insults by enhancing the antioxidant activity.

According to the VITRO assay, all these compounds exhibited significant neuroprotective and antioxidant activities.

The findings strongly suggested total bakkenolides and their derivatives demonstrate neurologic deficit's protective effects by blocking the mechanisms involved in neuron cell apoptosis through their antioxidant property.

Taken together, herbal Butterbur processed bioactive compounds such as bakkenolides may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of neurologic deficits.

The kidneys formed part of the secretary system are two bean-shaped organs located against the back muscles in the upper abdominal area.

The kidneys play a critical role in filtering wastes from the breakdown of active muscle and the food you eat and removing extra water from the blood through urinary secretion.

Furthermore, the kidneys also maintain the fluid in the body by secreting extra water through urinary secretion.

Kidney stones are composed of mineral salts formed in the kidneys. Men account for 80% of kidney stones incidence and are at risk of forming between 30 and 40 years of age. About 75% of kidney stones are calcium stones.

According to statistics, kidney stones affect over 10% of the world's population.

The causes of kidney stones are debatable. However, some researchers suggested that dehydration, food restriction, Rotavirus infection, over intake of calcium and supplements,... and high fat intake are associated with an increased risk of forming kidney stones.

Ureteral stones are kidney stones that are stuck in one or both ureters (the tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder), leading to the obstruction of urinary secretion.

Most people with kidney stones are asymptomatic. However, some may experience symptoms of renal colic, an excruciating intermittent pain, usually in the flank (the area between the ribs and hip), that spreads across the abdomen, often to the genital area and inner thigh.

The pain tends to come in waves, gradually increasing to peak intensity, then fading, over about 20 to 60 minutes. The pain may radiate down the abdomen toward the groin or testis or vulva.

Other symptoms include nausea and vomiting, restlessness, sweating, and blood in the urine. A person may have an urge to urinate frequently, particularly as the stone passes down the ureter. Chills, fever, and abdominal distention.

Cramp Bark is an ornamental plant, genus Viburnum, belongings to the family Adoxaceae, native to Europe and Asia. T herbal medicine has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and nervine. hypotensive agent and to treat menstrual cramps and pain, afterbirth, postpartum pains, excessive blood loss in periods, bleeding associated with menopause, etc.

In finding a potential herbal medicine for the prevention and treatment of kidney stones, researchers examined the efficacy of Gilaburu (Viburnum opulus) extract in the treatment of distal ureteral stones <10 mm.

The study included data from a total of 103 patients retrospectively analyzed. divided into two groups: those given V. opulus 1000 mg peroral 3×2 and diclofenac 50 mg peroral on-demand (n=53) and those given only diclofenac sodium 50 mg peroral on-demand (n=50).

According to the expulsion rate assay, the group treated with V. opulus 1000 mg peroral 3×2 and diclofenac 50 mg peroral on-demand showed a rate of stone expulsion that is significantly higher by 82% compared to the diclofenac 50 mg peroral on-demand treatment group of 66%.

Furthermore, elapsed time to stone expulsion was significantly shorter in the V. opulus 1000 mg peroral 3×2 and diclofenac 50 mg peroral on-demand of 9±1.8, compared to another group of 14±2.3 days.

Most importantly, the V. opulus group showed no need for additional treatment (URS and ESWL), and analgesic was less required compared to another group.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "V. opulus is an herbal treatment alternative that facilitates the passage of ureteral stones <10 mm. Prospective, randomized studies are needed to support these results".

Taken altogether, cramp bark(Viburnum opulus) may be considered a functional remedy for the treatment of ureteral stones, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
