Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose.
In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas die off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.
The pancreas is an oblong flattened gland in the digestive and endocrine system located in the abdomen. By secreting pancreatic juice into the small intestine, the pancreas helps to break down carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.
Traditional Chinese medicine views the pancreas as a vital organ that is responsible for the absorption of foods' qi and nutrients before passing them to other organs to nourish our bodies.
According to statistics, diabetes is one of the most common diseases in the US. Approximately 10% or 29.1 million people in the United States have diabetes, accompanied by 8.1 million that are undiagnosed and unaware of their condition.
About 1.4 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in the United States every year. More than one in every 10 adults who are 20 years or older has diabetes.
Hyperglycemia, a medical condition of abnormally high blood glucose, is a major concern, in people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
Most cases of hyperglycemia occurred in patients who do not manage their diabetes properly.
Hyperglycemia, a hallmark of diabetes has been found to induce diabetics complications, including neuropathy, nephropathy, and retinopathy). ...
Oleanolic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of triterpenoid, belongings to the group of Terpenes found abundantly in honey mesquite, garlic, java apple, clove, etc.
In finding a potential plant that processes anti-chronic disease activity researchers examined the hematological effects of oleanolic acid (OA) in streptozotocin- (STZ-) induced diabetic rats.
The study included animals that were separated into five groups; the non-diabetic group (ND), the diabetic control group (DC), and the treatment groups of insulin (170 μg/kg, s.c), metformin (500 mg/kg, p.o), and OA (80 mg/kg, p.o). OA was administered orally twice a day.
According to the results of the analysis,
* Untreated diabetic rats exhibited hyperglycemia, elevated glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), oxidative stress, and a reduced erythropoietin (EPO) concentration when compared to ND rats.
* The administration of OA attenuated hyperglycemia, HbA1c, and EPO concentrations compared to DC rats.
* Furthermore, OA also decreased the blood glucose concentration, and HbA1c, and improved EPO concentrations associated with a notable increase in red blood cell (RBC) count and other RBC indices.
* Moreover, OA increased the antioxidant status of the RBCs with a concomitant decrease in oxidative stress.
Collectively, researchers said, "These findings suggest that OA improves diabetes-induced hematological changes caused by hyperglycemia and attenuates the progression of cardiovascular complications in DM individuals".
Taken together, oleanolic acid may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of diabetes, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#FermentedSoy Shows a Potential Probiotic Effect on Gut Microorganisms, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Gut microbiota or gastrointestinal microbiota, the complex community of microorganisms in our digestive tracts plays a critical role in a variety of metabolic functions, including produced vitamins, synthesized all essential and nonessential amino acids, and carried out biotransformation of bile.
Gut microbiota protects the intestinal structures and functions by attaching to the gut wall against the entry of pathogenic enteroinvasive bacteria into the epithelial cells.
More precisely, the guts microbiota plays a vital role in human health, including the key processes of nutrition-enhancing the digestive functioning, lipid, and energy metabolism by inducing the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), phenolics, and other molecules, and pathogen resistance by promoting the immune functioning.
From the immune perspective, gut microbiota protects the intestines by alerting the immune response against foreign invasion through specific receptors, leading to an immune system in inducing the proinflammatory cytokines.
However, the imbalance of digestive gut microbiota has been found to induce a number of diseases, syndromes, and functional aberrations, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and wider systemic manifestations of disease such as obesity, and type 2 diabetes.
In a healthy individual, the levels of gut microbiota are balanced which allows the body to function in an optimal way.
Furthermore, gut microbiota also is found to stimulate the production of some vitamins (B and K), and digest certain foods that the stomach and small intestine have not been able to digest, particularly in the combat against the aggression of other bad microorganisms.
Imbalanced gut microbiota is found in obese patients, compared to healthy-weight individuals.
However, alterations in gut microbiota composition have been found in patients with a low-grade inflammatory state, leading to an increased risk of several diseases, including type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease.
Although the digestive tract can adapt to change, the loss of balance in gut microbiota may induce dysbiosis., leading to health problems of functional bowel disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, allergies, obesity, and diabetes.
Fermented soy products are diverse varieties of soy food made from fermented soybeans, including miso, natto, tempeh, and soy sauce.
In finding a potential plant that improves the digestive functioning, researchers examined the effect of fermented foods' (kefir, kombucha, sauerkraut, tempeh, natto, miso, kimchi, sourdough bread), health benefits on gut microbiota.
According to the results of the analysis of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) for their gastrointestinal effects (kefir, sauerkraut, natto, and sourdough bread).
* Fermented foods showed a potential probiotic effect on gut microorganisms.
* The fermentation-derived production of bioactive peptides, biogenic amines, and conversion of phenolic compounds to biologically active compounds prevent anti-nutrient risk.
* Fermented food, kefir, exerted beneficial effects in both lactose malabsorption and Helicobacter pylori eradication.
However, researchers said, "In summary, there is very limited clinical evidence for the effectiveness of most fermented foods in gastrointestinal health and disease".
Taken altogether, fermented soy may be considered a functional food for improving the gut microbiota, pending confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Omega3 Fatty Acids Inhibit the Expression of #Hyperlipidemia and #Hypertension Associated with the Risk of #CardiovascularDiseases
Kyle J. Norton
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions associated with the heart and blood vessels.
Heart disease is a class of diseases associated with interruption of blood flow in the blood vessel or damage of the heart tissue, including coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina and myocardial infarction.
According to the statistics, heart disease is a leading cause of death in the US. Approximately 2000 people in the general population die of heart disease every day.
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the most common type of heart disease, that kills over 370,000 people annually.
The causes of cardiovascular diseases are associated with the accumulation of plaques in the arteries, impeding the blood flow which carries the nutrients and oxygen to the heart, causing damage to the heart tissue and reduced function of the arteries.
High blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, weight, depression and family history associated with the early onset of plaques accumulated and impeding the function of the arteries are the prevalent risk factors of cardiovascular diseases.
In other words, anything that serves to damage the inner lining of blood vessels and impedes the transportation of oxygen and nutrition to the heart can be defined as a risk of heart disease. Here are some early indications of heart disease symptoms.
According to the statistics, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women in the US with 90% of women having one risk factor.
The most common complications of heart disease are heart failure, when the heart cannot adequately pump blood throughout the body, and heart attack when the coronary arteries narrow caused by the building up of plaques that block the blood supply to the heart.
Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.
The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the effects of omega-3 fatty acids on cardiovascular diseases (CVD).
According to the tested analysis,* The administration of omega-3 fatty acids showed a significantly reduced risk for sudden death caused by cardiac arrhythmias and all-cause mortality in patients with coronary heart disease.
* Furthermore, omega-3 fatty acids inhibited the expression of hyperlipidemia and hypertension.
* There are no significant drug interactions with oral administration of omega-3 fatty acids.
More profoundly, the American Heart Association recommends the consumption of two servings of fish per week for persons with no history of coronary heart disease and at least one serving of fish daily for those with known coronary heart disease.
Additionally, approximately 1 g/day of eicosapentaenoic acid plus docosahexaenoic acid is recommended for cardioprotection. Higher dosages of omega-3 fatty acids are found to ameliorate the elevated triglyceride levels (2-4 g/day).
Taken together, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of CVD, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Kyle J. Norton
The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.
The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance that aids digestion, builds cell membranes, and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.
Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by reducing partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.
Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells grow and multiply disorderly and uncontrollably in our body.
Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.
However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.
Liver cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the liver tissue.
Liver cancer at the early stage no not cause any symptoms. However, at the advanced stage, liver cancer cells can cause a wide range of symptoms including jaundice, abdominal swelling and pain, and dark urine and white stool accompanied by the general symptoms of cancers such as unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, chronic fatigue and tiredness and gastrointestinal discomforts.
According to the statistics provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, every year, approximately, 1,900 men and 580 women are diagnosed with liver cancer, causing the death of 950 men and 270 women.
In 2017, 2,500 Canadians were diagnosed with liver cancer and 1,200 Canadians died from liver cancer.
Compared to the early stage of other cancer, the 5 years survival rate in the early stage diagnosis is only 31%, and 43% of people with liver cancer are diagnosed at stages 0 and 1.
Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.
In finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the effect of poly(lactide-co-glycolide)/d-alpha-tocopherol polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate nanoparticles that optimize the ratio of doxorubicin (DOX) and elacridar (ELC) to target both LCSCs and liver cancer cells.
According to the analysis,
* DOX/ELC molar ratio of 1:1 was synergistic in HepG2 cells and HepG2-TS.
* Furthermore, NDEs significantly increased cytotoxic effects against both HepG2 and HepG2-TS compared with DOX-loaded nanoparticles (NDs) or ELC-loaded nanoparticles (NEs) in vitro.
* In vivo, the nanoparticles exhibited better tumor targeting, with NDE showing the strongest antitumor activity with lower systemic toxicity.
After considering other factors, researchers said, "These results suggested that NDE represented a promising combination therapy against liver cancer by targeting both liver cancer cells and CSCs".
Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered an adjunct therapy in the treatment of liver cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of tocopherols in supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Bilberry May Process Anti Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) and Varicose Veins Properties, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Varicose veins are the medical condition in which the superficial veins have become enlarged and twisted.
The condition has been found to induce bleeding or superficial thrombophlebitis if left untreated.
The most common causes of varicose veins are found just under the skin in the legs, leading to the symptoms of fullness and pain in the affected location accompanied by symptoms of achy or heavy feeling in the legs. The pain is also worsened after a long time of sitting or standing for a long time and skin discoloration around the area.
Some patients with painful varicose veins also experience symptoms of burning, throbbing, muscle cramping, and swelling in the lower legs and itching.
Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of varicose veins, aging due to wear and tear on the valves in the veins that help regulate blood flow may be one of the most common risk factors.
Dr. Caggiati A in the study of age-related variations of varicose veins, wrote, "Varicose SVs were more frequent in the older group (62%) than in younger one (39%) owing to a higher prevalence of limbs with combined saphenous veins (SVs) and Stributaries of the SVs (STVs) varicosities (respectively, 59% and 37%)".
And, "varicose disease may progressively extend in an antegrade fashion, spreading from the STVs to the SVs".
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant has been used as herb in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), researchers compared the efficacy of Pycnogenol, venoruton, troxerutin, the complex diosmin-hesperidin, Antistax, Mirtoselect (bilberry), escin, and the combination Venoruton-Pycnogenol (VE-PY) against the therapeutic compressions.
The study included 1,051 patients who completed the registry. During the experiment, there are no safety or tolerability problems observed.
Mirtoselect (bilberry) showed a significant effect on skin flux but to a lesser extent compared to those of Venoruton, Pycnogenol, and the combination VE-PY.
The edema score was decreased more effectively with the combination and with Pycnogenol compared to the other treatment group including the Mirtoselect (bilberry).
According to the improvement in symptoms score, Pycnogenol and compression showed a larger decrease in oxidative stress compared to the Pycnogenol, Venoruton, Mirtoselect (bilberry) and with the VE-PY combination.
However, the efficacy of Pycnogenol and the combination are competitive with stockings that do not have the same tolerability in warmer climates compared to other groups.
The findings suggested that the tested compounds processed anti chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and varicose veins properties.
Taken together, Mirtoselect (bilberry) may be considered a functioning remedy for the treatment of varicose veins with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

The central system is the complex of nerve tissues including the brain and spinal cord with functions to respond to the integrating sensory information.
Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system in which the macrophages of the first defense stimulates the production of a blood palette to cover the wound in case of injury and the production of proinflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to fence off the foreign pathogens.
Inflammation also can be triggered by the immune mistakenly attacking the body tissues in cases of autoimmune disease.
Neuroinflammation is a process of the immune system that responds to harmful pathogens that induced oxidative stress to the brain.
A nerve cell is a brain cell specialized in transmitting nerve impulses.
Neuroinflammation is a medical condition characterized by the inflammation of the central nervous tissues, including the brain and spinal cord.
There are many risk factors associated with the onset of neuroinflammation similar to other tissue inflammation, including infection, traumatic brain injury, toxic metabolites, or autoimmunity.
In other words, neuroinflammation is a complex response to brain injury involving the activation of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, and generation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species.
Overnutrition in the Western world may be one of the main culprits associated with the widespread neuroinflammation in the aging population.
Neuroinflammatory disease can be acute or chronic. Chronic neuroinflammation that leads to the activation of glial cells and the recruitment of inflammatory cytokines into the brain is found to associate with neurodegenerative diseases.
Most cases of neuroinflammatory disease are associated with the loss of neuronal structure and function. can be measured by the typical inflammatory markers, including CSF Aβ1-42, tau, and p-tau181, and a panel of 37 neuroinflammatory markers in patients with Alzheimer's disease.
Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.
The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention of chronic inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the neuroprotective activity of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) against the inflammation associated with neurodegeneration and cognitive impairments induced by systemic LPS administration using in vivo rat model system.
The study included young adult Wistar strain male albino rats randomized into four groups: (i) Control, (ii) LPS alone, (iii) LPS + ASH-WEX, (iv) ASH-WEX alone.
According to the tested analysis, orally administered ASH-WEX not only significantly suppressed the cognitive and motor-coordination impairments in rats, but also regulated the expression of various proteins involved in synaptic plasticity and neuronal cell survival.
In LPS-mediated microglial activation-induced damage to neurons via direct cell-to-cell contact or through secretion of inflammatory mediators, the application of ASH-WEX and FIV pretreatment restored neurite outgrowth and protect neurons from apoptotic cell death.
In other words, LPS-induced neuroinflammation activated in microglial-conditioned medium-treated neuronal cultures and microglial-neuronal co-culture were significantly demolished by the application of ASH-WEX.
Collectively, researchers said, "ASH-WEX can be used as a promising natural therapeutic remedial for the prevention of neurodegeneration and cognitive impairments associated with peripheral inflammation and neuroinflammation".
Taken together, Ashwagandha may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of neuroinflammation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Artichoke Methanol #Extract Flower and/or #Cynaropicrin Process Anti Proliferation in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML), According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Artichoke may be the next target to extract the ingredient needed for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), according to studies.
Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a type of cancer characterized by the increased and unregulated growth of myeloid cells in the bone marrow and the accumulation of these cells in the blood.
The exact causes of CML are unknown. Some researchers suggested that the causes of DNA alternation of the myeloid cells may be associated with the abnormal function of genes involved in cell cycle division and tumor suppression.
Epidemiologically, most people with CML are associated with risk factors of aging, male gender, and long-term exposure to radiation. However, most people with some of the risk factors do not develop CML.
According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2018, about 8,430 new cases will be diagnosed with CML (4,980 in men and 3,450 in women). The disease also causes the death of 1,090 people, including 620 men and 470 women.
The most common symptoms of CML include easy bleeding and tiredness, unintended weight loss, pain or fullness below the ribs on the left side, pale skin.
If you experience some of the above symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of the disease.
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and for the treatment of digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.
Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia evaluated the methanol extract of CCL flower and/or cynaropicrin showed remarkable anti-proliferative activity in vitro models of the leukocyte cancer cell.
In other words, the study was carried out to examined the effect of CCL extract on human K562 CML and K562 imatinib-resistant (IMAR) cell proliferation and on p210BCR/ABL expression.
Where p210BCR/ABL chimeric protein is considered to be implicated in the pathogenesis of Philadelphia chromosome-positive human leukemias.
Injection of CCL extract showed to inhibit the cell viability of both K562 CML human cell line and K562 IMAR, according to the MTT assay.
In protein implication, cynaropicrin and its deacyl derivative from the CCL extract displayed a significant capability in the inhibition of the p210BCR/ABL oncoprotein, according to the Western blot technique.
In cancer viability assay, CCL extracts exerted a similar effect compared to that of imatinib or its cancer growth arrest in CML.
In the depth differentiation, researchers also found that CCL extract also showed strong inhibition of the delay or overcome the resistance of CML to chemotherapy.
Taken together, artichoke with the abundantly bioactive compounds may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.
