#Herbal #BilberryExtract in a High Dose Exerts A Protective Effect Against the Alternation of Coronary Arteries Induced by ROS in Vivo

Kyle J. Norton

Vasoprotection is the action in which substances including herbal and natural remedies are used to protect the integrity of the blood vessels.

Blood vessels are the tubular structure including a vein, artery, or capillary which carries the blood through the tissues and organs pumped by the heart.

There are 3 main types of blood vessel
* Arteries that deliver oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the tissues and organs of the body. Damage of arteries is found to induce coronary artery disease caused by narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries due to plaques accumulated on the arterial wall.

* Veins that carry blood toward the heart. Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a common condition associated with a disease of the veins that affects up to 20 percent of adults.

* Capillaries (the smallest blood vessels) have been found to induce systemic capillary leak syndrome (SCLS) is a rare acquired disorder.

Some researchers suggested that following a healthy diet accompanied by moderate exercise may have a strong impact on the blood vessels' integrity.

Dr. Hanrui Zhang said, "Accumulating evidence suggests that inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFα) plays a pivotal role in the dysregulation of macrovascular and microvascular function".

And, "Dietary supplements and exercise training decrease TNFαproduction and ameliorate TNFα-mediated pathological changes in vasculature. Thus, the inhibitory effects of dietary supplements and physical exercise on TNFα production and TNFα signaling may contribute to their vasoprotective properties".

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

In finding a natural ingredient that processes vasoactive and vasoprotective properties, researchers examined the effects of anthocyanin-rich extracts prepared from chokeberry (Ck), bilberry (B), or elderberry (E). on reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a critical role in the impairment of nitric oxide-mediated vascular functions.

In Coronary arterial rings isolated from 64 pigs and incubated in sterile tissue culture media overnight, Ck and B, but not E, produced dose- and endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation.

In coronary vascular tone, endothelium-dependent vasorelaxation by other factors was not affected by exposure of rings to any extract at 0.05 mg total anthocyanins per liter for 5 or 30 min.

Furthermore, anthocyanin-enhanced extracts produce endothelium-dependent relaxation in porcine coronary arteries.

However, high doses of B exerted a significant protective effect against the alternation of coronary arteries induced by ROS with no effect on vasorelaxation to endogenous or exogenous NO.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "These results suggest that such extracts could have significant beneficial effects in vascular disease".

Taken altogether, bilberry-processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered a functioning remedy for the prevention and treatment of vascular disease, pending the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Bromelain Inhibits Parameters Associated with Blood Coagulation Process, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Coagulation is the process to form a blood clot. Coagulation is also used by the immune system to cover the wound or cut it to prevent additional blood loss and protect the body against the invasion of foreign microorganisms.

More precisely, in the acute phase of infection, the immune system activated the fibrins together with small blood cell fragments called platelets, to form the clot. The clots are removed after healing.

However, excessive blood clotting associated with certain diseases and conditions, genetic mutations, and medicines, particularly in the aging population has been found to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Excessive blood clotting can be classified into acquired and genetic excessive blood clotting
* Risk factors associated with acquired excessive blood clotting are smoking, overweight, obesity, pregnancy, use of birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy,...

* The genetic preposition of clotting occurs in the mutation of proteins associated with blood clotting including mutated proteins that cause delay or dissolve blood clots such as Factor V Leiden and
Prothrombin gene mutation.

The most common diseases associated with excessive blood clotting include venous thromboembolism or DVT which involves in the deep veins in the legs and arterial thrombosis which involves the arteries of the heart.

Conventionally, most cases of excessive blood clotting are treated by anticoagulants. In life-threatening blood clots, thrombolytics can dissolve clots that are already formed.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of blood coagulation, researchers examined the bromelain coagulation-inhibiting effects.

In an animal model, bromelain enhanced the activity of serum fibrinolysis by inhibiting the fibrinogen synthesis involving hepatocytes in the final stages of the blood coagulation process.

Additionally, the anti-blood coagulative activity also exhibits the direct degradation of fibrin and fibrinogen associated with the clotting of blood.

Furthermore, bromelain lowers kininogen and bradykinin serum that involve in the contact activation of the blood coagulation process.

Additionally, bromelain also influenced prostaglandin synthesis which serves the physiological function of preventing needless clot formation.

Moreover, these effects of bromelain are also dose-dependent.

Taken together, bromelain may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of blood coagulation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Turmeric and Ginger Exert a Significant Protection of Endocrine Functioning by Modulating the Hormones Produced by the Glands

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient that protects the endocrine system integrity with no side effects, according to studies.

The endocrine system is made up of glands that produce and secrete hormones with the aim to regulate the activity of cells or organs.

In other words, the endocrine system produces hormones to regulate the body's growth, metabolism (the physical and chemical processes of the body), and sexual development and function.

Any disruption of the endocrine system can cause abnormal production of hormones, leading to developmental malformations in the infant and children, interference with the function of the reproductive organ, increased cancer risk; and disturbances in the immune and nervous system function.

The most common cause of endocrine dysfunction is exposure to man-made xenochemiclas. Particularly to those new and without testing men make chemicals introduced to the market every year.

There are many ways that endocrine disruptors can interfere with the endocrine system in hormone production such as mimic or partly mimic naturally occurring hormones in the body like estrogens such as xanophytochemicals that bind to a receptor within a cell and block the endogenous hormone from binding.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient that promotes endocrine function, researchers examined the effects of ginger and turmeric on the modulation of hormone production in the body's glands.

According to the differentiation of physiological and therapeutic effects of ginger and turmeric, both exerted a significant activity in some endocrine gland functions, and signal pathways by
* Inhibiting the high levels of some hormones such as T4, leptin or interacting with hormone receptors. In other words, ginger and turmeric normalize the levels of the hormone for the body needs.

* Inhibiting the production of cytokines/adipokine expression associated with inflammation and oxidative stress.

* Inhibiting the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS)-generating enzymes against the oxidative stress-induced hormone imbalance.

* Protecting the cell integrity against DNA alternation by promoting pro-apoptotic and inhibiting proliferative genes.

The results strongly suggested that ginger and curcumin exerted strong protection of endocrine functioning by modulating the hormones produced by the glands.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "These multiple mechanisms of protection against inflammation and oxidative damage make ginger and curcumin particularly promising natural agents in fighting the ravages of aging and degenerative diseases".

Taken together, turmeric combined with ginger may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of endocrine dysfunction, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric and ginger in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

#Cucumis Melo #Extract Found in #Topical #Turmeric Exert a Potential Effect on the Treatment #Vitiligo, Researchers say

Kyle J. Norton

Vitiligo is a condition of skin discolor disease caused by the destruction of pigment cells and melanocytes of the skin.

The condition, in most cases, is localized. However, in some patients, the disease also can affect several different areas of the body.

Symptoms of vitiligo are associated with the loss of skin color, or white, and patches of skin.

The exact cause of vitiligo is unknown, however, some researchers suggested that the disease may be caused by an immune overreaction that mistakenly attacks and destroys certain cells within the body.

Epidemiologically, people in the younger age group before the age of 40 are at most risk of vitiligo.

According to the statistics, over 50% of vitiligo is found in patients who are 20 and younger.

The condition has been found to induce emotional and psychological issues to patients, even the condition does not cause pain or health problems.

As of today, researchers do not know how to prevent disease onset. Most medications for the treatment of vitiligo including creams that control inflammation, and combining psoralen and light therapy are focusing on reducing the severity of the condition and improve the quality of life.

If all noninvasive treatments fail, surgery may be necessary.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In finding a natural compound for the treatment of vitiligo, researchers examined the curcumin effect on the pigment cells of the skin, melanocytes.

Injection of Cucumis melo extract showed to exhibit the production of antioxidants by the host in blocking the effect of free radicals in the induction of skin oxidative stress.

Topical preparation, containing Cucumis melo superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase, demonstrated a potential effect in the treatment of vitiligo.

Natural UV or artificial narrowband UVB treatment or phototherapy displayed significant protection against pigment damage, similar to those of turmeric topical preparation.

Additionally, the topical gel according to the repigmentation rate recorded exerted a similar effect compared to the patients treated only with phototherapy with adverse effects.

Moreover, the topical formulation, containing phenylalanine, Cucumis melo extract, and acetylcysteine showed a more promising result combined with nb - UVB target phototherapy.

Based on the findings, turmeric used along with or combined with other conventional medicine may be considered remedies for the prevention and treatment of vitiligo pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Greentea's #EGCG Exerts Immunomodulatory Effects Against the Onset of Autoinflammatory and Immune Disease, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea is found to consist of a strong immunomodulating effect, affecting the innate and adaptive immune systems, a renowned institute study suggested.

Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine or food, long-term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weakened immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory.

According to the Harvard Medical School, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) isolated from green tea expressed a strong effect on T cell functions, including T cell activation, proliferation, differentiation, and production of cytokines.

Injection of the phytochemical in the animal model showed significant effects in regulated T cell dysfunction in the expression of autoimmune inflammatory diseases as well as ameliorated T cell-mediated autoimmune diseases.

Furthermore, in naïve CD4(+) T cells proliferate and differentiate into different effector subsets, green tea EGCG inhibited the pro-inflammatory Th1 and Th17 cells, subsets of Th cells responsible for inducing autoimmunity, thus improving symptoms and reducing the pathology of autoimmune diseases.

Additionally, Dr. Wu D, the lead author said, "(The) protective effect EGCG is associated with the suppressed proliferation of autoreactive T cells, in reduced production of pro-inflammatory cytokines of Th1 and Th17, and increased T cell regulation populations in lymphoid tissues and central nervous system".

Further evaluation of green tea EGCG effect in regulated CD4(+) T helper (Th) subsets Th1, Th9, and Th17 cells conducted by Tufts University, postulated that the phytochemical impeded Th1, Th9, and Th17 differentiation in exhibited inflammation by prevented IL-6(the pro-inflammatory cytokine)-induced suppression of Treg development.

More importantly, in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) rats, EGCG improved the function of CD4(+) T cells through modulated the expression of IL-6-induced cytokine(gp130) in response to autoimmune function and cellular response.

Taken together, the green tea process has a strong immunomodulating effect in reduced risk and treatment of autoinflammatory and immune disease, but long-term and large amounts of intake should be taken with care to prevent toxicity.

#Coffee and Coffee Caffeine Are Inversely Association with a Reduced Risk of #Parkinson's Disease, Researchers say

Kyle J. Norton

Intake of coffee caffeine regularly is associated with a significantly attenuated risk of neurodegenerative conditions, particularly in the onset of Parkinson's disease, a recent study suggested.

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disease caused by a deficiency of dopamine and. degeneration of the basal ganglia of the brain, affecting muscular normal function.

Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

According to the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, in comparison, the population comprised 47,351 men and 88,565 women free of Parkinson's disease, stroke, or cancer at baseline, caffeine intake is associated with reduced risk and progression of PD, compared to the top and bottom one-fifth men participants. No effect is found for decaffeinating coffee intake regardless of the number of cups consumed.

Interestingly, among women, the numbers of caffeinated coffee intake daily have a strong implication in the attenuated risk of PD linearly, in comparison to the lowest intake of moderated intake groups.

Furthermore, a case-control study conducted in western Washington State in 1992-2000. Incident PD cases (n = 210) and controls (n = 347) with frequency matched on gender and age identified from enrollees of the Group Health Cooperative health maintenance organization, returned questionnaires by participants indicated, consumption of 2 cups/day showed a strong expression in reduced risk of PD.

More importantly, in the review of twenty-six studies included: 7 cohorts, 2 nested case-control, 16 case-control, and 1 cross-sectional study, the total relative odd ratio for the association between caffeine intake in low to moderate groups and PD was 0.75.

But, in cohort studies, reduced risk of PD significantly decreased if only women participants were considered.

Researchers, at the above study, revealed that PD risk is associated with a linear relationship between levels of caffeine exposure of relative odd ratio of 0.76, per 300 mg caffeine intake.

Taken together, there is no doubt that the risk of PD has an extremely inverse association with caffeine intake, particularly in moderated drinkers.

#Cooking Has A Major Influence on #CruciferousVegetables' #Antioxidants Capacities, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.
In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radicals before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating protein, lipid, and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

However, in people with a weakened immune system, intake of dietary sources of antioxidants may be necessary.

On the other hand, free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.

Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Oxidative stress is a condition caused by an imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

Some researchers suggested that oxidative stress may also arise due to the chain reaction of free radicals in which free radicals donate or intercept an electron from other stable molecules.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

In finding a natural antioxidant in whole food, researchers examined the antioxidant activities of some Brassica vegetables.

According to the dietary information,
* The antioxidants in cruciferous vegetables were found to be influenced by antioxidant breakdown and leaching during cooking, particularly in heat cooking.

* Brassica vegetables, including cruciferous vegetables, perceived minor antioxidant ability in processed vegetables compared to uncooked samples.

* Food processing operations in terms of blanching, canning, sterilizing, and freezing have a strong effect on the antioxidant capacity.

In other words, cooking methods perhaps can have a major influence on the yield, chemical structure, and bioavailability of antioxidants in the Brassica family.

More precisely, the consumption of raw or lightly blanched veggies is an appropriate way to maximize their health benefits.
