Atherosclerosis, one of the major causes of cardiovascular disease is a medical condition caused by the accumulation of plaque on the arterial wall. Over time, the condition can lead to narrowing arteries or blocked arteries, leading to reduce oxygenated blood flow to the heart and other parts of the body.
Arteries are blood vessels carried oxygen-rich blood to the heart before passing them to the tissues and organs.
Plague is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood. In other words, cholesterol that cannot be returned to the liver for reuse may have a strong impact to induce plaque accumulation.
People in the early stage of atherosclerosis are asymptomatic. However, over time, the continued buildup of plaque on the arterial wall can cause symptoms of chest pain or angina and shortness of breath. fatigue. confusion, due to a blockage or reduce blood flow.
Although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of atherosclerosis, an unhealthy lifestyle, particularly in people who follow the pattern of the Western diet has been found in many patients with the disease.
Dr. Matthias Nahrendorf, the lead scientist wrote, "Diet, exercise, stress, and sleep are receiving attention as environmental modifiers of chronic inflammatory diseases, including atherosclerosis, the culprit condition of myocardial infarction and stroke".
And, "Accumulating data indicate that psychosocial stress and a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet aggravate the cardiovascular disease, whereas regular physical activity and healthy sleeping habits help prevent it".
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of atherosclerosis researchers evaluated a nutritional supplementation with a bilberry anthocyanin-rich extract (BE) in the atherosclerotic lesion development in apolipoprotein E-deficient (apoE⁻/⁻) mice.
In the early stage of atherosclerosis development in tested mice, BE significantly improved hypercholesterolemia associated with plaques built-up without affecting the plasmatic antioxidant status.
According to the nutrigenomic analysis, BE modulated the expression of the gene involved in different cellular processes such as oxidative stress, inflammation, transendothelial migration, and angiogenesis, which lead to atherosclerosis development/protection.
In other words, BE enhanced the mechanisms involved in the preventive action of bilberry anthocyanin-rich extract against atherosclerosis.
In the development of atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E-deficient mice (apo E(-/-)). Apo E(-/-) mice, researchers compared the efficacy of two bilberry extracts, one rich in anthocyanins extracted from untreated bilberries (BE) and a second one extracted from yeast-fermented bilberries (FBE).
According to the 16 weeks of a diet supplemented with 0.02% of either BE or FBE, both bilberry extracts led to significant inhibition of plaque development, without affecting the levels of oxidative stress parameters or lipid profiles.
These results strongly suggested that bilberry extract inhibited plaque development through other unknown mechanisms.
By comparative tests, fermentation generates new bioactive compounds FBE are more effective in attenuating progression of the atherosclerotic lesions compared to those of BE.
Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Bromelain Combined with Cisplatin Enhance the Effects of Chemo-Drug on the Treatment of #BreastCancer in Vitro, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Breast cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the breast tissue due to the alternation of DNA.
Most cases of breast cancer at the early stage start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of either the milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.
At this stage, the patient may first notice as a painless lump in the breast or armpit and most often discovered by herself or her partner.
However, some patients may also experience symptoms of nipple discharge (clear or bloody)
inverted or retracted nipple, scaly or pitted skin on the nipple persistent tenderness of the breast and
unusual breast pain or discomfort.
At the advanced stage, besides experiencing symptoms shared commonly with other types of cancer, patients may also notice localized bleeding and severe pain due to the oversize that press on nearby blood vessels and nerves.
According to the U.S. Breast Cancer Statistics, approximately, 1 in 8 U.S. women, or 12% will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime.
In 2019, an estimated 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 62,930 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.
The 5 years survival rate of breast cancer at the early stage is close to 100%.
The causes of breast cancer are not identified. Gender, aging, genetic preposition, family history, never pregnant women, and smoking are some breast cancer prevalent risks.
Dr. Bhaskarapillai Binukuma, the lead scientist in the evaluation of the diet risk of breast cancer wrote, "Increased consumption of total fat and saturated fat were found to be positively associated with the development of breast cancer".
And, "A moderate inverse association between consumption of n-3 fatty acids and breast cancer risk and a moderate positive association between n-6 fatty acids and breast cancer risk were observed".
In other words, if you are a high-fat diet follower, your risk of breast cancer is increased substantially.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of breast cancer, researchers examined the bromelain-functionalized multiple-wall lipid-core nanocapsules (Bro-MLNC-Zn) on breast cancer cell lines.
The complex used for the study was formed by a Zn-N chemical bond and a chelate with hydroxyl and carboxyl groups.
In human breast cancer cells (MCF-7), the complex at the nanocapsule surface showed an antiproliferative effect by maintaining its proteolytic activity.
Interestingly, Bro-MLNC-Zn showed a reduced dose at 160-folds to exert a similar effect compared to that of and bromelain solution.
Based on the results, researchers said, "The surface functionalization approach produced an innovative formulation having a much higher antiproliferative effect than the bromelain solution".
In order to reveal more information about bromelain anti-breast cancer activity, researchers investigated the possible synergistic cytotoxic effects of bromelain in combination with cisplatin on MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells.
Human MDA-MB-231 cells used in the study were treated with different concentrations (0.24-9.5 µM) of bromelain or cisplatin alone, as well as four different combinations.
According to the results of tested assays, single-agent treatment with cisplatin or bromelain decreases the viability of the MDA-MB-231 cells at 24 and 48 h in a dose- and time-dependent manner.
All combinations displayed synergistic effects against MDA-MB-231 cells at 48 h, particularly with combination 1 (bromelain 2 µM + cisplatin 1.5 µM).
Interestingly, combination 1 also was found to induce breast cancer cell death with a significant decrease in the levels of several apoptotic proteins but an increase in levels of the pro-apoptotic proteins compared with bromelain.
Taken together, bromelain used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Kyle J. Norton
Coffee consumers may have one less risk to worry about. A recent study by a well-known institute suggested that long-term and moderate coffee consumption is inversely associated with CVD risk.
Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
Cardiovascular disease is a medical condition characterized by a heart attack, chest pain (angina), or stroke caused by narrow blood vessels induced block blood.
In the review of literature existed from the database involved prospective cohort studies of the relationship between coffee consumption and CVD risk, 36 satisfied the guidelines included studies, with 1 279 804 participants and 36 352 CVD cases, coffee drinkers have a nonlinear association to the risk of CVD, depending to numbers of cup intake per day.
According to a joint study led by the Harvard School of Public Health, the relative risk of cardiovascular disease in coffee consumption was .95 compared with the 0 cups of coffee consumption per day.
Dr. Ding M, the lead author in the review said, "Moderate coffee consumption was inversely significantly associated with CVD risk, with the lowest CVD risk at 3 to 5 cups per day, and heavy coffee consumption was not associated with elevated CVD risk".
In fact, long-term moderate coffee consumption not only reduced the risk of heart disease but also ameliorated other conditions associated with CV risk factors such as obesity and depression. However, the effect of caffeine on lipid files may associate with endothelial function in increased CVD risk, depending on how the coffee is prepared.
More importantly, epidemiological studies also suggest that risks of mortality in both CV and all causes are substantially attenuated in regular coffee drinkers.
Furthermore, other researchers insisted that the health benefits of coffee consumption regarding cardiovascular system risk, mostly depend on its antioxidant compounds involved many factors, such as the variety of coffee species, roasting degree, type of brewing method, and serving size.
Since most of the data on coffee's health effects are based on observational data, the risk of high caffeine adverse effects such as anxiety, insomnia, tremulousness, and palpitations have rarely been mentioned, therefore, more randomized, controlled studies are necessary, some researchers suggested.

#Curcumin Found in #Herbal #Turmeric Prevent the Onset of #Stroke Through Its Antioxidant Activities
Kyle J. Norton
A stroke is a medical condition caused by poor blood flow to the brain, leading to the death of the neurons.
Besides cancer and heart disease, stroke is the third leading cause of death in the US. According to the statistics, approximately 1/4 of all stroke victims die as a direct result of the stroke or its complications.
The causes of stroke are either associated with plaque build-up on the arteries, leading to reduce blood flow to the brain, depending on the location of an obstruction, or the breaking of small blood vessels in the brain.
In other words, strokes can be classified into 2 types
* Ischemic stroke is caused by a clot or other blockage within an artery which leads to the brain.
* Hemorrhagic stroke is caused by the vessel in the brain rupturing that results in blood leaking into the brain.
Stroke is caused by a number of factors. Epidemiological studies suggested high blood pressure, medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, smoking, age, gender ethnicity, and personal or family history of stroke are some of the prevalent risk factors.
Some researchers in the examination of the rise of stroke in North America suggested that stroke may be associated with the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.
The American Heart Association wrote, "Western" diets consisting of red and processed meats, refined grains, sweets, and desserts may be associated with a greater risk of stroke, according to a study published in this week's rapid access issue of Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association".
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, and wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In finding a natural compound for the treatment of stroke prevention scientists evaluated the protective effects of curcumin, the best-known member, which is mainly extracted from turmeric's preventive effect on stroke.
The study included stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRsp) randomly divided into either a control group (n = 10, saline or curcumin (100 mg/kg/day)) or a curcumin group (n = 10) administrated daily.
According to the tested assays, the administration of curcumin significantly delayed the onset of stroke and increased the survival of SHRsp by decreasing the expression of ROS and improving endothelial-dependent relaxation of carotid arteries.
However, according to the RT-PCR and immunoblotting, curcumin showed no statistical significance in the presence of UCP2 inhibitor genipin by blocking the decrease of ROS and the increase of NO production.
Where genipin is a chemical compound found in gardenia fruit extract.
In other words, in order for curcumin to exert its stroke-preventive activity, curcumin cannot be consumed together with gardenia fruit.
Additionally, in the study to examine the curcumin effect during the stroke, researchers found that curcumin encapsulated in exosomes, nano-vesicles (<200 nm), shows therapeutic effects in brain diseases, such as stroke.
Taken together, turmeric processed with a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered a supplement for the prevention of stroke, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Greentea and Its #Extract Reduce Symptoms Expression and Complications of Rheumatoid Arthritis Through Their Antiinflammatory Activities, Researchers Reveal
Kyle J. Norton
Green tea exhibited anti-inflammatory effect in reduced symptoms and progression of rheumatoid Arthritis, a renowned institute study suggested
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic disorder as a result of inflammation, affecting mostly the flexible (synovial) joints and tissues, and organs in the body after the age of 40 and causing the diminished quality of life of many elders.
Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including dizziness, low energy, weaken immunity, and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory.
According to a joint study led by Washington State University College of Pharmacy, green tea (EGCG, EGC, and EC) showed to ameliorate the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators including (IL-6 and IL-8) and Cox-2 in primary human rheumatoid arthritis synovial fibroblasts (RASFs), through the effects of its phytochemical compounds of EGCG and EGC antioxidant activities.
Dr. Fechtner S, the lead researcher said," EGCG is the most effective catechin at inhibiting downstream inflammatory signaling, its effectiveness could be hindered by the presence of (epicatechin) EC".
In the investigation of the anti-inflammatory activity of green versus black tea aqueous extract in a rat model with orally/daily distilled water as the placebo, indomethacin (1.0 mg/kg body weight; a non-steroidal/anti-inflammatory drug), or tea aqueous extracts (for 28 or 14 consecutive days administrated from day 0 or 14 of arthritis induction, respectively), group treated with a high dose of GTE (from day 0) significantly alleviated (P < 0.05-0.001) the progression and all complications induced by rheumatoid arthritis in compared placebo.
More importantly, Researchers also found that the expression of the anti-arthritic activity of the high dose of GTE (from day 0) mediated by significantly decreasing the systemic production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and the expression of chemokine receptor-5, a protein in activated immune activities in the in synovial tissues, was comparable (P > 0.05) with that of indomethacin (12.9-53.8 vs. 9.5-48.4%, respectively).
Furthermore, the anti-arthritic potency of tea aqueous extracts was dosed dependent on the order of a high dose of GTE > low dose of GTE ≥ high dose of BTE > low dose of BTE.
Other study suggested that green tea extract in reduced symptoms and risk of complication probably are the result in regulating chemokine(a family of cytokines secreted by cells) production in an immune reaction and chemokine receptor expression in interaction with proinflammatory cytokines of human RA synovial fibroblasts in rat adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA).
Taken together, green tea may be served as a functional food to reduce symptoms and risk of complications for patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

#Tocopherols Exhibit Cardioprotective Activity by Improved Ventricular Performance and Reduced Myocardial Infarct Size and Cardiomyocyte Apoptosis
Kyle J. Norton
Cardiovascular disease is defined as medical conditions affecting the cardiovascular system, including the heart, blood vessels(arteries and veins).
The heart formed part of the circulatory system is a muscular organ that pumps blood through the blood vessels to nourish the body tissues and organs.
Most cases of heart dysfunction are associated with the reduced function of the heart muscle, leading to reduce blood flow that facilitates heart failure and the backup of blood into the lungs or rest of the body.
According to the statistics provided by the US government, heart disease is a leading cause of death in the US. Over 600,000 died of heart disease, every year including 370,000 people died of coronary heart disease (CHD), accounting for 1 in 4 deaths.
The most common symptoms of heart disease are poor appetite, weight loss, shortness of breath, sudden collapse, blood clots, and stunted growth found in children.
Stroke is a medical condition caused by poor blood flow to the brain, leading to brain cell death in the affected region.
The most common types of stroke are ischemic stroke associated with the obstruction of a blood vessel supplying blood to the brain and hemorrhagic stroke associated with small blood vessel ruptures. The most common cause of stroke is unmanaged high blood pressure.
Cardiac toxicity is a condition in which the heart has been damaged to some extent caused by harmful chemicals, including toxins induced by the treatment of chemotherapy, leading to reduced heart muscle function to pump blood and heart failure.
Long-term intake of certain medications and people who are under treatment of chemotherapy have been found in most cases of cardiotoxicity.
Cardioprotection is an action that contributes to the protection of heart and blood vessel integrity against damage or injury, including heart diseases, and stroke.
In other words, cardioprotection is a process in which substances or medicines are used including an herbal remedy to protect heart muscle tissues against ischemic insult and deoxygenation injury.
Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.
In finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, researchers examined the effect of alpha-tocopheryl phosphate, a phosphoric acid ester of alpha-tocopherol cardioprotective activity.
According to the analysis of rats treated with 5 mg/kg body wt for a period of thirty days compared to control rats which were given water only, after thirty days before both control and experimental hearts were subjected to 30-min global ischemia followed by 2 h of reperfusion.

According to the analysis of rats treated with 5 mg/kg body wt for a period of thirty days compared to control rats which were given water only, after thirty days before both control and experimental hearts were subjected to 30-min global ischemia followed by 2 h of reperfusion.
* The tocopheryl phosphate-fed rats exhibited significant cardioprotection by improved ventricular performance and reduced myocardial infarct size and cardiomyocyte apoptosis compared to the control.
* Supplementation with alpha-tocopheryl phosphate converted the pathway-induced death signal into a survival signal by enhancing anti-apoptotic pathways by inhibiting the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins.
* These results lead to the reduction of phosphorylation of pro-apoptotic c-Src that has been found to promote cardio functioning.
* Moreover, the application of tocopheryl phosphate also increased the DNA binding of the redox-sensitive transcription factor NFkappaB associated with proinflammatory activation and potentiated the activation of anti-death protein Bcl-2 and survival signaling protein.
After taking other factors into account, researchers said, "Tocopheryl phosphate could ameliorate myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury by converting ischemia/reperfusion-mediated death signal into a survival signal by modulating MAP kinase signaling".
Taken together, tocopherols may be considered an adjunct therapy that promotes cardioprotection, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Honey Used Alone or Combined with Other Conventional Medicines Process a Strong Anti Influenza Activities, Researchers Find
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the treatment of Influenza, according to studies. Influenza, also known as the flu, is an infectious disease caused by an influenza virus.
The most common symptoms include high fever, runny nose, sore throat, muscle pains, headache, coughing, and sneezing. A healthy individual may recover from influenza without medication in a few days with the symptoms that may last for a week.
However, people with a weakened immune system may have a problem recovering themselves without the assistance of medication. In severe cases, influenza can induce complications of pneumonia, ear, and sinus infection, and death.
People with medical conditions such as heart, lung, kidney, liver disease, AIDs, and severe anemia are at a higher risk of the onset of influenza, particularly in the elderly with a weakened immune system.
Children and adolescents who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy are at risk to be infected by the virus.
Furthermore, some researchers suggested that obese individuals also are more likely to be infected by influenza, compared to non-obese individuals.
Dr. J Justin Milner, the lead scientist in examining the obesity and influenza infection severity said, "Obesity also increases susceptibility to bacterial and viral infections [2]. In 2009, the CDC identified obesity as a risk factor for hospitalization and death from pandemic H1N1 influenza virus infection".
And, "An association between obesity and severe influenza outcomes, including seasonal influenza, has since been corroborated in other epidemiological studies".
The finding strongly indicated the risk of influenza in obesity.
Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The rich golden liquid is considered healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener.
With an aim to find a natural whole food for the treatment of influenza, researchers examined the anti-influenza viral activity of honey from various sources.
Antiviral activities of honey samples were evaluated in MDCK cells. Injection of Manuka honey efficiently inhibited influenza virus replication (IC50 5 3.6 1.2 mg/mL; CC50 5 82.3 2.2 mg/mL; selective index 5 22.9).
Furthermore,. In the presence of 3.13 mg/mL manuka honey, the IC50 of zanamivir or oseltamivir was reduced to nearly 1/1000th of their single use.
The finding clearly suggested that Manuka honey processes a strong anti-influenza activity when used alone or by promoting the function of conventional medicine when used combinational.
Some researchers suggested that manuka also inhibited the symptoms of influenza such as blocked sinuses, sore throat, and coughs through its major compound Methylglyoxal (MGO).
Moreover, Manuka honey also inhibited the production of proinflammatory cytokines during the acute phase of influenza, thus providing instant relief fa or a sore throat and cough.
In an immune perspective, Manuka honey also increased the expression of serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) which plays a critical role against the onset of infection by microorganisms.
Dr. Ogi M, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders said, "The relative risk for bacterial infection among patients with serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels below 600 mg/dL was 6.74 compared with that for patients with serum IgG levels over 600 mg/dL (95% confidence interval, 1.22 to 36.32; P = 0.029)"
And "In patients with serum creatinine levels over 2.0 mg/dL, the relative risk of bacterial infection was 5.31 compared with patients with serum creatinine levels below 2.0 mg/dL (95% confidence interval, 1.08 to 26.09; P = 0.040)".
The finding also suggested that Manuka honey also can modulate immune expression to prevent the infection caused by the influenza virus by increased production of immunoglobulin G.
Taken all together, there is no doubt that Manuka honey can be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of influenza, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
