#Coffee Exhibits a Significantly Lowering Effect on #SerumUricAcid Levels, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Good News for coffee lovers, intake of coffee is associated with ameliorated levels of uric acid, a marker of gout incidence, a renowned institute study suggested.
But intake of foods with high amounts of purines may cause an excess of uric acid in your blood.

According to the observation of data from 14,758 participants ages >/=20 years in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1988-1994), decreased serum uric acid level is associated with increased coffee intake.

Serum uric acid level was significantly lower with coffee intake of 4 to 5 and >/=6 cups daily compared to non-drinkers.

The study also indicated that serum uric acid was not affected by total caffeine from coffee and other beverages.

Additionally, researchers in the review of databases of MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and KoreaMed for all articles published before January 2015, 9 studies published between 1999 and 2014, containing a total of 175,310 subjects, demonstrated that coffee has a significantly lowering effect on serum UA.

And Amount of coffee required to lower serum UA is different by gender. Women are required to consume more cups of coffee (4-6 cups/day) compared to their male counterparts (1-3 cups/day) to exhibit the same effects

Significantly, the incidence of gout was even reduced linearly in participants with the intake of 1 cup/day or more with no difference in both genders.

Promisingly, in a total of 11.662 men and women aged 49-76 years, excluding those with medication for gout and hyperuricemia, use of diuretic drugs, and medical care for cancer or chronic kidney disease, daily consumption of coffee has a significantly inverse association with serum UA concentrations in men.

But in compared to women participants, male participants expressed a statistically significant elevation of inverse association between coffee and serum UA levels.

Taking together, the intake of coffee is associated with reduced levels of serum uric acid in the blood depending on the number of cup intake per day.

#Chafuroside A (CFA) Found in #GreenTea Inhibits Symptoms and Reduces the Risk of Airway Inflammatory Diseases, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may be a potential therapeutic functional food for the prevention and treatment of asthma, a chronic inflammatory disease, touching people of all ages, particularly in children, a renowned institute suggested
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing.

Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine, or food, long-term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weakened immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. But adding a slice of ginger will solve the problem.

According to the joint study led by the Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Kaempferol (3,5,7-trihydroxy-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one), a flavonoid found in green tea exhibited anti-oxidant/anti-inflammatory effects against various diseases, including asthma.

The study also demonstrated the function of Kaempferol in reducing oxidative stress through scavenging free radicals and superoxide radicals effects as well as preserving the activity of various antioxidant enzymes in attenuating the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

In fact, evidence from in vitro and in vivo assays postulated that aqueous fraction of green tea also exerted anti-asthmatic signaling activity in the ovalbumin-induced asthmatic model.

Furthermore, in the study of mice-induced asthma by ovalbumin, an aqueous extract of green tea displayed a potent anti-asthmatic activity by increasing the expression level of tumor necrosis factor-beta, (a protein involved in the production of one of the inflammatory cytokinin the acute phase) and interferon-gamma in the displacement of immune function against microbial infection and decreased expression of anti-asthmatic cytokines in the lung.

More importantly, green tea alleviated asthmatic symptoms by increasing the expression of Th1 cell-in regulated the production of interferon-gamma and interleukin (IL)-2, proinflammatory cytokines, and tumor necrosis factor.

Promisingly, another green tea constituent, namely Chafuroside A (CFA), water-soluble flavone C-glycoside, in experimental asthma/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)-rat model, treatment with Chafuroside A at 0.5mg/kg, 1.0mg/kg could attenuate inflammatory symptoms and ameliorate antigen-induced airway inflammation, respectively.

Dr, Onoue S, the lead author in the above study said, " A self-assembled micellar (SAM) formulation might be an efficacious approach for enhancing the therapeutic potential of CFA for treatment of inflammatory diseases".

Unfortunately, there are few reports suggesting that green tea-induced asthma in tea-sensitive patients, as epigallocatechin gallate induced histamine release through IgE-mediated response.

Taken together, there is no doubt that green tea may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of asthma, but people with tea-sensitive syndrome should avoid drinking green tea unless with the approval of related field specialists.

6-Gingerol Found in #Ginger Inhibits and Reduces Cell Viability of Human #ColonCancer, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a kitchen spice that processes the potential to treat colon cancer, according studies.
Colon cancer is a medicinal condition associated with irregular cell growth in the colon tissues.

According to the statistics provided by Stat-Canada, 1 in 16 Canadian men and 1 in 18 women will develop colorectal cancer over their lifetime. Cancer is the third leading cause of death behind prostate and lung cancer.

Every year, approximately 26,,000 Canadians are diagnosed with colorectal cancer, representing 13% of all new cancer cases.

Colon cancer is a slow-growth cancer, therefore, most colon cancer is detected in the later stage after experiencing symptoms of blood in your stool or an ongoing change in bowel habits. In other words, only 39% of colorectal cancer is detected in the early stage.

The 5-year survival rate of localized-stage colorectal cancer is 90%.

The cause of colon cancer is a result of the alternation of cell DNA. Researchers do not why? people with the same health conditions and family history are susceptible to the onset of the disease, while others do not.

Although there are many factors associated with the onset of colon cancer, aging may be one of the most prevalent risks. It probably is due to the disease taking over 10 to 15 years before the patients experience some related symptoms. In other words, according to epidemiological studies, the majority of colorectal cancers occur in people older than 50.

"70% of colorectal cancer is diagnosed in patients over 65. Evaluation of the influence of age and comorbidity on survival and cause of death in a non-selected population".

And, "In colon cancer patients age and comorbidity predict survival. This represents possible bias or a reduced survival benefit of treatment, and is an indication that colon cancer is not the prognosis-defining illness in the majority of patients".

The result strongly suggested that colon cancer affects mostly the aging population over 65 years of age. The simultaneous presence of two chronic diseases or conditions in elderly patients is associated with a poor survival rate.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on the finding of a bioactive compound to replace the chemo medication which induces serious side effects in cancer patients examined 6-Gingerol, a natural component of ginger, anti-colon cancer activity.

Injection of 6-gingerol treatment significantly reduced the cell viability of human colon cancer cell, LoVo, in a dose-dependent manner.

Furthermore, 6-gingerol induced significant G2/M phase arrest and had a slight influence on the sub-G1 phase in LoVo cells, according to the flow cytometric analysis and observed by the reduced levels of a protein involved cancer cell cycle.

Moreover, 6-gingerol also induced cancer cell apoptosis by elevating the functions of levels of tumor-suppressive genes and exhibiting cytotoxicity through elevated intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS).

These results strongly suggested 6-gingerol should be beneficial to the treatment of colon cancer, according to Dr. Lin CB and colleagues.

In order to understand more about the effect of ginger on colon cancer, researchers investigated a novel prodrug of aspirin, [6]-gingerol aspirinate (GAS) against colon cancer.

GAS exerted enhanced anti-cancer properties in vitro and superior gastroprotective effects in mice. by suppressing the enzymes involved mediation of tumor repopulation.

Importantly, GAS was also able to survive stomach acid and decomposed in intestinal linings or after absorption simultaneously release ASA and [6]-gingerol.

Dr. Yingdong Zhu, the lead scientist said in the final report, "Our results demonstrate the enhanced anticancer properties along with gastroprotective effects of GAS, suggesting that GAS can be a therapeutic equivalent for ASA in inflammatory and proliferative diseases without the deleterious effects on stomach mucosa".

Taken altogether, ginger processed as a highly active bio-compound may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of colon cancer with no side effects, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Isothiocyanates (ITCs) found in #BrassicaOleracea #Vegetables Inhibts #ColorectalCancer Through Apoptosis

Kyle J. Norton

The colon-rectum formed as a part of the digestive system is involved in the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and breaks down certain materials in the feces into substances of which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.
Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by irregular cell growth on the body tissue, due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Colorectal cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the tissue of the colon or rectum due to the alternation of the cell's DNA.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women compared to other types of cancer.

The lifetime risk of colorectal cancer is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

Approximately, 140,000 cases of colorectal cancer were diagnosed in the US in 2018. Colorectal Cancer also causes the death of over 50, 000 people, representing 8.3% of total cancer death.

Being overweight or obese. smoking, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol drinking, the increase in age, family and personal history, genetic preposition are some of the prevalent risks of the disease.

Overall, the lifetime risk of colorectal cancer developing is 1 in 22 (4.49%) in men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) in women.

In finding a potential whole for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effect of principal bioactive compounds, isothiocyanates (ITCs) on a colorectal cancer cell line (HT-29).

According to the chemicals analysis, purple cabbage extract showed the highest ITC concentration per gram, fresh weight, followed by black cabbage and Romanesco cauliflower.

ITC at the concentrations of 7.08 microg/mL decreased cancer cell viability by inducing the caspase-3 associated with cell death and DNA fragmentation at 48h.

Brussels sprouts showed the strongest effects on cell viability and caspase-3 activity.

Furthermore, all varieties of Brassica Oleracea with rich sources of ITCs potently inhibit the growth of colon cancer cells by inducing apoptosis.

All the extracts showed anticancer activity at ITC concentrations of between 3.54 to 7.08 mg/mL,

Based on the finding, researchers said, " ITC concentration and the chemopreventive responses of plant extracts vary among the varieties of Brassica Oleracea studied and among their cultivars".

Taken together, Brassica Oleracea vegetables may be considered functional foods for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#IndianMustard and Broccoli Show a Strong Effect in the Protection of #LiverToxicity, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance that aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver protection is an action in which substances including medicine and herbal remedy were used to protect the liver against damage.

Liver disease is a broad term that included any problems that cause the reduced function of the liver.

There are many risk factors that liver problems. Most cases of liver disease are diagnosed in the advanced stage, it takes years to develop.

There is no single cause of liver disease. Researchers suggested that viruses such as hepatitis A, B, and C, long-term excessive alcohol drinking, and genetic mutation inherited from the parents is the major risk factors associated with the early onset of the diseases.

Some researchers suggested overweight and obese and congenital diseases such as Hemochromatosis and Wilson’s disease also are prevalent risk factors for liver damage and diseases.

Liver damage and disease can also be caused by long-term intake of certain medications, such as paracetamol, and Illegal drugs such as cocaine.

The most common symptoms of liver disease can be felt only after more than 75% of the liver is damaged, including persistent jaundice and gastrointestinal discomforts, abdominal pain, and swelling, leg and ankles swelling, itching, and pale color of stool.

The most common risk factors are genetic preposition, viruses, and long-term excessive alcohol drinking.

According to the statistic, the mortality rate infected by viral hepatitis has increased by 63% from 890,000 in 1990 to 1.45 million in 2013, according to a review of data collected in 183 countries.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, researchers examined the effect of combined therapy with Indian mustard and broccoli on rats' liver-induced hepatotoxicity by long-term vincristine (VCR)

According to the results of rats selected for the study induced liver toxicity by
* Vincristine (VCR) treated group showed signs of hepatotoxicity, including altered liver architecture and higher serum levels of liver stress markers ALT and AST.

* Vincristine (VCR) treated group also showed an impaired antioxidant potential and higher mRNA levels of IL-12 and IL-4, which are markers of apoptosis in rat livers.

In other words, VCR treatment-induced hepatocyte apoptosis by stimulating the levels of apoptotic proteins and pathways.

Most importantly, the treatment of individual administration of mustard or broccoli partially ameliorated all these responses, compared to maximum improvement in the combined therapy of both extracts.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " Thus, the long-term administration of VCR is hepatotoxic and induces apoptosis; however, the combined therapy of both extracts mitigated these effects"
Taken altogether, broccoli may be considered a liver protective supplement, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Omega-3 Fatty Acids Reduce Microinfarct Burdens and Improve the Function Deficits, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

The brain formed part of the central nervous system is the most complex organ made up of more than billions of nerve cells or neurons.
The functions of the brain are associated with the communication of trillions of connections called synapses in many specialized regions.

A neuron or nerve cell formed part of the central nervous system, made of a cell body (also called soma), dendrites, and an axon is a cell in the nervous system that carries electrical impulses.

Neurons are core components of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves that play an essential role in the process and transmit information.

Neurological diseases are the medical conditions of brain disorders. Anything that involves structural, biochemical, or electrical abnormalities in the brain, spinal cord, or other nerves, including brain damage is considered as neuro disease.

The most common neurodegenerative diseases in the elderly are dementia. Depending on the brain regions that are damaged or dysfunctional, dementia can be Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and Huntington's disease.

Genetic mutation inherited from parents such as the NOTCH3 gene is the most common autosomal dominant inherited cause of stroke and vascular dementia.

Poor lifestyle choices, such as smoking, overuse of alcohol, lack of physical activity and inadequate relief of chronic stress, and poor diet with high in saturated and trans fat, red meat, processed foods, and less in fruits and vegetables and whole-grain are some of the key contributors in the development and progression of chronic diseases, including neurological diseases.

Neuroprotection is a process to preserve the neuronal structure and/or function against the death or gradual death of neurons, including the use of medicines and herbs.

In other words, neuroprotection protects the neuronal integrity against the reduction in the rate of neuronal loss over time inducing neurological disease, including neurodegenerative disease.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of neuro-diseases, researchers examined the effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs) on alleviating microinfarct burdens and functional deficits.

According to the results of Fat-1 transgenic mice and fish oil supplements, ω-3 PUFAs showed strong protective activity against microinfarcts in a multiple diffuse microinfarcts model.

In other words, ω-3 PUFAs significantly attenuated cell apoptosis.

Furthermore, ω-3 PUFAs alleviated the diffuse microinfarct burdens and remarkably improved the functional deficits by reducing spontaneous anxiety, increasing preference for the novel object, and improving hippocampal-based learning and short-term memory.

Collectively, researchers said, "Enriched brain ω-3 PUFAs are effective for reducing microinfarct burdens and improving the function deficits, which support the clinical research and application of ω-3 PUFAs in the treatment or prophylaxis in vascular dementia".

Taken together, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a neuro-protective functional food, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of cancers, researchers examined the associations of serum carotenoids, retinol, and tocopherols with colorectal cancer risk.

According to the case-control study nested within the Japan Collaborative Cohort Study, including micronutrients measured in prediagnostic serum samples from 116 men and women who developed colorectal cancer during an 8-yr follow-up period and from 298 matched controls,* In men, the higher level of serum total carotenoids was associated with a decreased risk with the multivariate-adjusted odds ratio (OR) for the highest vs. the lowest tertile of 0.34.

* The increased serum retinol in all subjects and alpha-tocopherol also associated with a decreasing risk of cancer with the ORs for the highest tertiles were 0.29 and 0.29, respectively.

* In women, the higher levels of alpha- and total carotenoids were instead related to increased risk: with the corresponding ORs of 4.72 (95% CI = 1.29-17.3), 2.00 (0.70-5.73), and 2.47 (0.73-8.34), respectively.

Taken together, tocopherols may be considered a supplement for the treatment of colorectal cancer in MEN only, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
