Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) refers to a set of disorders that involve chronic inflammation of your digestive tract, including the most common types such as* Ulcerative colitis affects the innermost lining of your large intestine (colon) and rectum.
* Crohn's disease affects mostly the colon and the last part of the small intestine (ileum).
Colitis is a condition of inflammation of the large intestine, including the colon, caecum, and rectum.
There is no exact cause of colitis. Certain risk factors such as colon infection, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis), ischemic colitis, allergic reactions, and microscopic colitis have been found to increase the risk of the condition.
The most common symptoms of colitis are totally depending on the type, including abdominal pain, cramping, and diarrhea, with or without blood in the stool.
Conventionally, colitis caused by infection is treated with antibiotics. However, treatment of non-infection colitis is focusing on symptom relief, supportive care, and maintaining adequate hydration and pain control.
The most common tools used for colitis diagnosis are X-rays of the colon, testing the stool for blood and pus, sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy.
The statistics provided by a study from Medscape, suggested, "Internationally, the incidence of IBD is approximately 0.5-24.5 cases per 100,000 person-years for ulcerative colitis and 0.1-16 cases per 100,000 person-years for Crohn's disease. Overall, the prevalence of IBD is 396 cases per 100,000 persons annually".
Green peas are species of Pisum Sativum belongings to the family Fabaceae and native to western Asia from the Mediterranean Sea to the Himalayas Mountains. The pea is a green, pod-shaped vegetable and a cool-season crop grown in many parts of the world.
On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of diseases associated with colonic inflammation, researchers investigated the impact of green pea (GP) supplementation on the susceptibility of high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice to dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis.
The study included 6-week-old C57BL/6J female mice induced colitis was induced by adding 2.5% DSS in drinking water for 7 days followed by a 7-day recovery period that was fed a 45% HFD or HFD supplemented with 10% GP, after 7-week dietary supplementation.
According to the tested analysis, the administration of GP supplementation ameliorated the disease activity index score in HFD-fed mice during the recovery stage and reduced neutrophil infiltration-associated immune responses.
Furthermore, the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines involved in the mRNA expression of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and inflammatory markers interleukin (IL)-6, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), IL-17, interferon-γ (IFN-γ), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in HFD-fed mice was significantly decreased by the injection of GP.
Moreover, levels of mucin 2 produced from goblet cells in the epithelial lining into the lumen of the large intestine to protect the intestinal epithelium also increased in GP mice.
Additionally, GP ameliorated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress involved in the mediation of a pro-inflammatory synergy in the colon.
Based on the results, scientists said, " GP supplementation ameliorated the severity of DSS-induced colitis in HFD-fed mice, which was associated with the suppression of inflammation, mucin depletion, and ER stress in the colon".
Taken altogether, green peas may be considered a functional food for the prevention of colitis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Xuebijing Decoction (XBJ) Containing #Angelica Show no Side Effect in Reducing the Mortality Rate, WBC Count and Body Temperature in Patients with Sepsis
Kyle J. Norton
Sepsis is a condition caused by chemicals released into the bloodstream to fight the infection that triggers inflammation throughout the body as a result of severe infection(a)(b). according to a study by the University of Utah, sepsis is the commonest cause of admission to medical ICUs across the world.
Mortality from sepsis continues to be high. Besides shock and multi-organ dysfunction occurring following the intense inflammatory reaction to sepsis, complications arising from sepsis-related immunoparalysis contribute to the morbidity and mortality from sepsis(c).
The most common risk factors associated with the prevalent factors of sepsis, term infants, very low birth weight (VLBW) and preterm infants, obesity, operative vaginal delivery and age <25 years, elderly, patients in intensive care and with weakened immune system, invasive devices, and alcoholism.
Diseases associated with Sepsis are
* Staphylococcal infections
Preterm infants are especially susceptible to late-onset sepsis which is often due to Gram-positive bacterial infections resulting in substantial morbidity and mortality(24).
* Elevated central venous pressure
Elevated central venous pressure is associated with impairment of microcirculatory blood flow in sepsis(25).
* Neonatal cellulitis
There is a report of a case of late-onset neonatal invasive group A streptococcal disease characterized by rapidly progressing cellulitis and the development of sepsis(26).
* Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
There is a report on the spectrum of community-acquired S. aureus infections to compare the patients infected with methicillin-susceptible or methicillin-resistant strains among patients aged <20 years. Overall, 90 cases of community-acquired S. aureus were detected in an 11-year period(27).
* Bladder infection
Bladder bacteria is a common but unique cause of sepsis(28).
* Urinary tract infection
The study to evaluate the effectiveness of Lactobacillus GG supplementation in reducing the incidence of urinary tract infections (UTIs), bacterial sepsis, and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in preterm infants, found that seven days of Lactobacillus GG supplementation starting with first feed in not effective in reducing the incidence of UTIs, NEC, and sepsis in preterm infants. Further studies are required to confirm our results in lower birth weight populations(29).
On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, scientists examined the effects of Xuebijing injection (XBJ), a Chinese patent medicine on sepsis.
Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.
The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen the heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.
According to the search of medical literature in Embase, PubMed, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), and the Wanfang database from inception to June 6, 2017, including relevant RCTs comparing XBJ combined with RT and RT alone for sepsis,

* 1602 records and 16 RCTs (1144 patients) identified suggested that the combined therapy reduced 28-day mortality and body temperature.
* WBC count improved with combined medication at high dosages (one study included, 40/1144, MD -8.00, 95% CI -10.18 to -5.82) with no reduction at moderate dosages.
* However, moderate-quality evidence indicated positive results with low dosages.
Based on the results, researchers suggest, "This study suggested that supplementation with XBJ in addition to regular treatment may improve the 28-day mortality rate, APACHE Ⅱ scores, WBC count, and body temperature of sepsis patients without serious adverse events".
Taken altogether, angelica used combined with other herbal medicines may be considered a remedy for the treatment of sepsis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#ChasteTreeBerry Inhibits Pathways Associated with the Risk of #InflamatoryDiseases, Resrachers say
Kyle J. Norton
Chaste tree berry may process a strong anti-inflammatory effect in reduced symptoms of reddened, swollen, hot caused by an overreaction of immunity, a study suggested.
Inflammatory activity is an action of the immune system taken to protect the body against injury and infection.
Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac herb and considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.
According to Kyung Hee University, casticin a major compound found from Vitex species at doses of 1, 2, and 10mg/kg casticin via an i.p. injection to C57BL/6 mice, expressed a significant effect in inhibition of the numbers of cells of neutrophils, macrophages, and lymphocytes through reduced levels of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines, as shown in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), and lung histological analysis.
Furthermore, the tested compound also displayed a remarkably decreased the peribronchial thickening or bronchial wall thickening and perivascular inflammatory cells and the epithelium thickness in mice with lung inflammation, particular to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
In some newly found chemical compounds isolated from Chaste tree berry, namely a phenylindene-type lignan, vitexdoin F (1), and three phenylnaphthalene-type lignans, vitexdoins G, H and I (2-4) in the testing of anti inflammatory activities, Compound 1 showed a significant inhibition on the nitric oxide (NO) production (IC50 4.17 μg/mL) in induced inflammation.
Other, in the evaluation of the anti-arthritic activity of the extract of V. negundo seeds (EVNS) using Freund's complete adjuvant (CFA) induced arthritis (AA) in the rat model, orally administrated rats showed elevated anti-inflammatory activities through suppressed paw edema, decreased the arthritis score, spleen index, and reversed the weight loss.
In fact, the efficacy of extract of Chaste tree berry in reduced inflammation may be resulted of suppressed expression of the protein in regulated pro-inflammatory cytokines in various inflammatory pathways.
Taken together, phytochemical compounds found in Chaste tree berries may exhibit strong anti-inflammatory properties through ameliorated the protein involved in the expression of proinflammatory
cytokines.

#GreenCoffeeBean #Extract (GCBE) Inhibits Obesity by Lowering Fat Mass, Relative #BodyWeight, Researchers Find
Kyle J. Norton
In comparison to herbal medicine, food therapy even takes longer to ease symptoms, depending on the stages of the treatment which directly address the cause of the disease.
Coffee, second to green tea is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, made from roast beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
Obesity is a medical condition of excess body fat accumulated over time. According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.
The good news for coffee lovers, bioactive components found in coffee may have a potential effect in reduced risk and management of obesity, a renowned institute study opinionated.
According to the joint study led by the National Taiwan University, the efficacy of coffee in reduced risk and management of obesity over the last 10 years of research, may be attributed to
1. decrease lipid accumulation in cells via the regulation of the cell cycle in fat tissue
2. improved fat metabolic formation in both protein and transcription factors expression
According to animal studies.
In humans, it is the result of decreased body weight and visceral fat stored within the abdominal cavity.
Furthermore, the study also expressed the importance of coffee intake in influencing the gut microbiota in obese animals and humans.
Additionally, in the evaluation of possible lipid catabolism and body fat regulation effects of 3-caffeoylquinic acid in Green coffee bean extract (GCBE) in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice fed with only HFD or HFD with GCBE at 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg, respectively, researchers filed the following results
1. GCBE treated group showed a significantly decreased body weight gain, and liver and white adipose tissue weights, but importantly intake of coffee also regulated adipose tissue lipolysis hormones in breaking down fat accumulation.
2. The efficacy of the treatment group in reduced obesity risk may also benefit the decreased mRNA expression levels of adipogenesis and adipocyte metabolism in both gene and protein expression.
3. Compared to other treated groups, GCBE-treated mice displayed a lower fat mass and relative body weight and decreased fat mass.
More importantly, in the review of papers from in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro experimental studies in animals and human tissues as well as wide population-based epidemiological studies in the last 10 years, researchers at the joint study led by the South University School of Pharmacy said, " there is mounting evidence of the reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes by regular coffee drinkers of 3-4 cups a day. The effects are likely due to the presence of chlorogenic acids and caffeine, the two constituents of coffee in higher concentration after the roasting process".
Taking all together, there is no doubt that coffee and coffee caffeine have a significant and potential effect in reducing the risk and management of obesity, through various active biochemicals in dose deepening manner.

#Herbal Angelica Exhibits Anti-#ColorectalCancer Property through Its Anti-Inflammatory Activity, Researchers Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Colorectum including the large intestine and the rectum is the second part of the digestive system involved in the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and breaks down certain materials in the feces into substances of which some of them be reabsorbed and reused by the body.
The colon also known as the large bowel or large intestine, forms parts of the digestive system in our body.
The colon consists of four parts: descending colon, ascending colon, transverse colon, and sigmoid colon.
The main functions of the colon are to reabsorb fluids and process waste products from the body and prepare for its elimination.
Colorectal cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the colon or rectum.
Most cases of colorectal cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon and rectum, before penetrating into deeper layers to form a tumor through proliferation.
Colorectal cancer is a relatively very slow-growing cancer that progresses in a predictable way.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, excluding skin cancers, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States.
In 2019, approximately 101,420 new cases of colon cancer and 44,180 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed in the US.
The 5-year survival rate of colorectal cancer diagnosed at the localized stage is 90%. Sadly, only 39% of patients are diagnosed at this early stage.
The most common types of colorectal cancer classified depending on the primary originated cells are
* Adenocarcinomas
Most bowel cancers are adenocarcinomas, originating in epithelium tissues, including the surface layer of skin, glands, and their tissues that line the cavities and organs of the body.
* Squamous cell cancers
Squamous cells are the skin-like cells that make up the bowel lining together with the gland cells. Squamous cell cancers are rare with a risk of 25 per 100000 population.
On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of cancers, scientists examined the chemopreventive effect of the supercritical extracts from Angelica sinensis (SFE-AS) on induced colorectal carcinoma in mice.
Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

According to the results of selected male colorectal carcinoma mice that were subcutaneously injected with a single dose of azoxymethane (AOM, 10 mg x kg(-1) body weight) then one week later, given 2% dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) in drinking water for 7 days to induce colorectal carcinoma, following by oral administration of supercritical extracts from Angelica sinensis at 15, 30, 60 mg x kg(-1) until the 17th week,* The Tumor-bearing quantity and tumor-bearing volume of the SFE-AS group were lower than that of the AOM/DSS model control group.
* The SFE-AS group also showed a significant reduction of oxidative stress in the AOM/DSS-induced mouse colorectal carcinoma model associated with inflammation.
In other words, the application of Angelica sinensis at 15, 30, and 60 mg x kg(-1) and strong inhibitory activity against 2% dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) induced colorectal carcinoma,
Based on the evidence, researchers said, "SFE-AS showed an intervention effect in the incidence and development of AOM/DSS-induced mouse colorectal carcinoma associated with inflammation, and could be further used in chemo-preventive studies on human colorectal carcinoma".
Taken altogether, Herbal Angelica may be considered an anti-colorectal cancer herbal remedy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

The most common types of colorectal cancer classified depending on the primary originated cells are
* Adenocarcinomas
Most bowel cancers are adenocarcinomas, originating in epithelium tissues, including the surface layer of skin, glands, and their tissues that line the cavities and organs of the body.
* Squamous cell cancers
#Herbal #Bilberry Improves Memory and Learning Capability by Inhibiting Chemicals Associated with the Risk of Alzheimer's disease, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Memory impairment is a condition of partial or complete loss of memory, depending on the quality of the neuron that has been affected.
Memory impairment other than the physical impact is a progressive disease that can lead to permanent loss of memory due to the gradual loss of neurons in the brain.
The most common risk factors associated with memory loss in the general population are long-term use of certain medications, excessive alcohol drinking, smoking, drug abuse, depression, nutrient deficiency, stroke, and daily stress.
In elderly or aging-induced memory loss is associated with the deterioration of a region of the brain involved in the formation and retrieval of memories, the hippocampus, and the reduced hormones and protein that protect and repair brain cells and stimulate neural growth.
However, some researchers suggested the rise of memory impairment in the elderly probably is correlated to the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.
Dr. Scott E. Kanoski, the lead scientist in the review of the risk cognitive impairment in the Western diet consumption wrote, "Intake of saturated fats and simple carbohydrates, two of the primary components of a modern Western diet, is linked with the development of obesity and Alzheimer's Disease".
And, "Western diet intake is associated with cognitive impairment, with a specific emphasis on learning and memory functions that are dependent on the integrity of the hippocampus".
The results clearly stated if you are a Western diet follower, you are at a higher risk of memory impairment compared to healthy diet individuals.
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of memory impairment, researchers investigated the effects of Vaccinium uliginosum L. (bilberry) on the learning and memory impairments induced by amyloid-β protein (AβP) 1-42.
The evaluation included selected ICR Swiss mice divided randomly into 4 groups: the control (Aβ40-1A), control with 5% bilberry group (Aβ40-1B), amyloid β protein 1-42 treated group (Aβ1-42A), and Aβ1-42 with 5% bilberry group (Aβ1-42B).
According to the tested assays, bilberry-added groups showed to decrease in the finding time of the hidden platform, compared to those of escape latencies of AβP to that of Aβ40-1.
Furthermore, the bilberry-added Aβ1-42B group also showed a significant (P<0.05) increase in probe crossing frequency compared to Aβ1-42A.
In the passive avoidance test, bilberry significantly (P<0.05) increased the time of staying in the lighted area compared to AD control.
These results suggested that bilberry improved memory and learning capability in chemically induced Alzheimer's disease in experimental animal models.
In the incidence of degenerative disorders including Alzheimer's disease (AD), rats consumed approximately 3.2 mg kg(-1)day (oral), of the anthocyanins significantly enhanced short-term memory, but not long-term memory in the inhibitory avoidance task.
Moreover, injection of approximately 3.2 mg kg(-1)day (oral), of the anthocyanins also induced an increase in the number of crossings in the first exposure to the open field.
However, in the comparison of the radial maze and elevated plus-maze, lyophilized berries (blueberry, bilberry) improved working memory in the radial maze, with significant differences observed during sessions 1-2 and 4, compared to no effects in the elevated plus-maze task.
The findings strongly indicated the positive effects of the administration of lyophilized Vaccinium berries (blueberry, bilberry) and anthocyanin in the prevention of memory deficits related to AD.
Taken altogether, bilberry-processed abundantly bioactive compound anthocyanin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of memory impairment, pending to the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Coltsfoot Inhibits Pathways and Antioxidant Activities Agaainst the Risk of NeuroldegenerativeDiseases, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Neuroprotection is a process to preserve the neuronal structure and/or function against the death or gradual death of neurons, including the use of medicines and herbs.
In other words, neuroprotection protects the neuronal integrity against the reduction in the rate of neuronal loss over time inducing neurological disease, including neurodegenerative disease.
Neurodegenerative disease is the class of conditions associated with the progressive loss of neurons occurred mostly in older adults, including dementia. The most common dementia in the US is Alzheimer`s disease (AD).
Alzheimer's disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder caused by the slowly lost of neuron in the brain that affects memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks as the disease progress into an advanced stage.
According to the statistic, dementia affects over 47.5 million people worldwide, approximately 58 percent are living in low and middle-income countries.
Believe it or not, 5.8 million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer's dementia in 2019 and two-thirds of people with Alzheimer's disease are women.
Conventionally, as of today, there is no cure for dementia. Treatment of dementia is focusing to improve dementia symptoms and slow down the progression of the disease.
Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used for thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of the neurological disorder, researchers examined the neuroprotective effect of Tussilagone (TSL) on LPS-induced neuronal cell death.
According to the tested assays, 4 sesquiterpenoids isolated from the TSL showed a significant effect against the production of nitric oxide, prostaglandin E2, and tumor necrosis factor-α in LPS-treated BV-2 cells.
In other words, the sesquiterpenoids inhibited the production of free radicals and proinflammatory expression associated with the BV-2 cells' oxidative stress induced by LPS.
More precisely, the inhibition against the initiation of oxidative stress was attributed to the sesquiterpenoids activity in blocking the activation of the proinflammatory (NF-κB) pathway
Furthermore, the sesquiterpenoids also inhibited LPS-induced neuronal cell death in the co-culture system by inhibiting the expression of NF-κB pathway and scavenging of ROS.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "sesquiterpenoids from Tussilago farfara may have beneficial therapeutic potential for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases through inhibition of microglial activation".
Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the treatment of neurological disease, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
