#Fruits, #Vegetables, #Legumes Are Associated with A Reduced Risk of #PancreaticCancer, Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

The pancreas is an oblong flattened gland in the digestive and endocrine system located in the abdomen. By secreting pancreatic juice to the small intestine, the pancreas aids the digestive system to break down carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.

Traditional Chinese medicine suggested that the pancreas is a vital organ responsible for the absorption of foods' qi and nutrients before passing them to other organs to nourish our body.

Pancreatic cancer is a chronic condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the tissues of the pancreas.

At the early stage, patients with pancreatic cancer may be asymptomatic. However, at the later stage, besides the common symptoms shared by all types of cancer such as unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue, and gastrointestinal discomforts, patients with the condition may also experience localized symptoms such as internal bleeding and severe pain due to the oversize tumor which suppresses the nerve cells and blood vessels.

According to statistics, every year, approximately, over 55,000 adults in the United States are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, accounting for 3% of all cancers and 7% of all cancer deaths.

The survival rate of pancreatic cancer even diagnosed early is very low compared to other types of cancer. The 5-year survival rate at stage IA pancreatic cancer is only14%.

Researchers do not know what causes pancreatic cancer. Scientists do not know the exact causes of pancreatic cancers, but they do know several risk factors that can make a person more likely to get the disease, including the genetic and acquired genetic mutation of p16 and TP53 and KRAS, BRAF, and DPC4 (SMAD4).

Other prevalent risk factors, including long-term use of tobacco, exposure to certain chemicals, overweight, and obesity, and unpreventable risk factors of family history, gender, the increase of age, and ethnicity are associated with the early onset of pancreatic cancer.

Researchers at the John Hoskins Medical Center suggested an unhealthy diet high in meats, cholesterol, fried foods, and nitrosamines may increase risk, while diets high in fruits and vegetables reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer.

However, most people with some of the above risk factors do not get the disease.

In finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of diseases associated with abnormal cell growth, researchers investigated the consumption of raw fruits and vegetable effects on pancreatic cancer.

According to the dietary habits and medical history variables in a prospective study of fatal pancreas cancer among 34,000 California Seventh-day Adventists between 1976 and 1983. Forty deaths from pancreas cancer occurred during the follow-up period,

* Compared to all US whites, Adventists experienced a decreased risk of pancreas cancer death (standardized mortality ratio [SMR] = 72 for men; 90 for women),

* Furthermore, increasing consumption of vegetarian protein products, beans, lentils, and peas, as well as dried fruit, was associated with highly significant protective relationships to pancreas cancer risk compared to increased risk in increasing meat, egg, and coffee consumption.

In other words, regular consumption of raw fruits and vegetables exerted protective relationships associated with a protease-inhibitor content that decrease the risk of pancreas cancer in high-risk patients.

Taken altogether, fruits and vegetables may be considered a functional food for the prevention of pancreas cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#BrassicaVegetables Reduce the Risk of #ProstateCancer by Modulating Xenobiotic-Metabolizing Enzyme Induced DNA Damage

Kyle J. Norton

The prostate warped around a tube (the urethra) is a gland of the male reproductive system found in front of the rectum and just below the bladder and responsible for making some of the semen that carries sperm.
The prostate gland is considered a reproductive organ in men.

Prostate cancer is a medical and chronic condition in which the cells of the prostate have become cancerous due to the alternation of the cell's DNA.

Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during Physical (rectum) exams.

Primary prostate cancer normally starts from the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissue and gradually spreads to the deeper part of the prostate.

At the early stage, patients may not experience any symptoms, However, at the advanced stage, prostate cancer can induce symptoms of blood in the urine, frequent urination, and urinary difficulty.

The cancer cells at this stage can also travel a distance away from the prostate to invade other healthy tissue and organ, leading to secondary metastasis tumors.

According to the statistic, the 5-year survival rate for local and regional (stage 0 and 1) stages of prostate cancer is nearly 100%.

Believe it or not, more than 80% of prostate cancers are diagnosed in men who are 65 or older.

Therefore, men who are at higher risk of prostate cancer due to family history and increase in age, and inherited gene changes should have their prostate gland checked annually.

In finding a potential plant that processes anti-cancer activity researchers examined the effects of Brassica vegetables, including mustard greens on prostate cancer risk.

According to the tested results
* Brassica vegetables exerted a strong effect on the metabolic breakdown products associated with the modulation of xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes that protect DNA from damage.

According to the 12 published studies that analyze the relationship between Brassica vegetable intake and prostate cancer risk* Three reported statistically significant reduced risks (P < 0.05) and one reported a borderline significantly reduced risk (P = 0.06) with high Brassica vegetable consumption.

* 6 showed a clear explanation of the prostate cancer risk involved in the consumption of Brassica vegetables.

Collectively, researchers said, " The epidemiological literature provides modest support for the hypothesis that high intakes of Brassica vegetables reduce prostate cancer risk".

Taken together, mustard greens may be considered a functional food for reducing the risk of prostate cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

The Anti Neuro and Muscle Pain #HerbalMedicine #EssentialOils, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Low back pain is a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) of degenerative disc disease, with pain persisting for longer than 3 months, affecting over 80% of the population in the US alone at some point in their life.
Chronic LBP prevalence in older adults was significantly higher than in the 21-to-44-year age group and inflicted more disabled, longer symptom duration, etc.(2). The unique impact of CLBP is unknown(3).

Acute lower back pain is a common musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) caused by injury to the muscles, ligaments, joints, or discs that last less than a few months.

Chronic lower back pain that lasts longer than 6 months, is normally caused by damage to nerves in the low back which supplies sensation and power to the muscles in the pelvis, legs, and feet.

According to the statistics, up to 80% of the population will experience back pain at some time in their lives. The condition affects people of all ages, particularly in occupations that required the use of muscles of the lower back often.

Worldwide, years lived with a disability caused by low back pain have increased by 54% between 1990 and 2015.

Depending on the severity of the condition, chronic lower back pain can induce symptoms of numbness, tingling, or weakness in one or both legs and intense, constant pain that gets worse at night.

Some people with chronic lower back pain may also experience symptoms of loss of bowel or bladder control and unexplained weight loss.

According to the statistics, the lifetime prevalence of non-specific (common) low back pain is estimated at 60% to 70% in industrialized countries with a one-year prevalent rate ranging from 15% to 45%. The adult incidence of lower back pain is 5% per year.

Comfrey is a perennial plant in the genus of Symphytum, belonging to the family Boraginaceae, native to Europe. It has been used in herbal and traditional medicine to ease excessive bleeding or on open wounds, relieve pain and swelling, treat circulation issues, reduce cholesterol, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with neuro and muscle pain, researchers examined the effectiveness of herbal medicine, including comfrey for nonspecific low back pain (LBP).

A systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involved in the searching of studies published on numerous electronic databases up to September 2014 found 14 RCTs with 2050 participants/

Capsicum frutescens (cayenne) reduces pain more than placebo.

Although Harpagophytum procumbens (devil's claw), Salix alba (white willow bark), Symphytum officinale L. (comfrey), Solidago chilensis (Brazilian arnica), and Lavender essential oil also seem to reduce pain more than placebo, evidence for these substances was of moderate quality at best.

All tested herbal medicine herbal showed no significant adverse events within the included trials.
Taken altogether, Comfrey and other herbal medicine may be considered a remedy for the treatment of unspecific low back pain, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

XiaoYaoSan (XYS), The TCM Medicnes Improves Parameters Associated with the Onset of Depression, Researchers say

Kyle J. Norton

Depression is a common and serious psychological illness, affecting the physical and mental functions of patients, including the ways patients feel, think, and act.
Some patients with depression may feel sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed.

There are many causes associated with the onset of depression, including genetics, changes in hormone levels, certain medical conditions, stress, grief, or difficult life circumstances that initiate the change of brain chemistry in inducing depressive syndrome.

The most common symptoms of depression include sadness, hopelessness, guilt, change of mood, loss of interest in friends, family, favorite activities, and sex.

Some patients with depression also experience cognitive symptoms of trouble concentrating, making decisions, remembering, and thoughts of harming themselves.

Readers may find other symptoms not be included in the article including behavior and physical symptoms.

Over 30 million Americans suffer from depression and the amount is increasing at an alarming rate. Depression may be a mental health disorder that can affect the way you eat, sleep, and the way you feel about yourself.

According to the statistics provided by the Anxiety and Depression Association of Americans, major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15 to 44.3, affecting more than 16.1 million American adults, or about 6.7% of the U.S. population age 18 and older.

The mild case of depression can be defeated by a variety of self-care techniques. Others require the treatment of medication, such as antidepressant medications and psychotherapy that help to reduce and sometimes eliminate the symptoms of depression.

In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of neurological disorders, scientists examined the effects of Xiaoyaosan (XYS), a famous and classic traditional Chinese prescription for depressive disorders.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

In a total of 17 depressed patients and the 17 age- and gender-matched healthy subjects as the primary cohort, depressed patients were screened according to the Chinese Classification of Mental Disorder (CCMD-3) and the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD).

According to the results of experience,* There were significant differences between depression cohort and healthy volunteers, and between patients before and after the treatment of XYS.

* Furthermore, XYS enhanced the levels of oxalic and stearic acids that significantly increased in depressed patients' plasma while valine and urea significantly decreased, as compared with healthy controls.

* XYS reversed these metabolite changes in terms of regulating dysfunctions in glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism, fatty acid biosynthesis, valine, leucine, and isoleucine biosynthesis, and arginine and proline metabolism.

Taken together, angelica sinensis may be considered a remedy to treat depression, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Fennel May Improve the Blood HDL-C and Triglyceride, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural whole food with the potential to treat hyperlipidemia without inducing any side effects, some studies suggested.
Cholesterol, the natural ingredient produced in the liver plays an important role in stimulating the production of vitamin D, steroid hormones, and bile acids and maintaining healthy cell membranes.
Hyperlipidemia is a condition characterized by abnormally elevated levels of cholesterol in the plasma of the blood.

The causes of hyperlipidemia are unknown. However, an unhealthy diet with a lot of unsaturated fat and trans fat is associated with the early onset of the disease. Foods such as cheese egg yolks fried and processed foods and red meat have been found to increase blood cholesterol, and long-term intake of such foods in great amount have been found to increase the risk of hyperlipidemia, epidemiological studies found.

The Beni-Suef University, in the study to determine the development of obesity in response to a high-fat diet (HFD) an Egyptian Herbal mixture formulation (HMF), including fennel, showed, "feeding an HFD diet significantly increased final body weight, triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol, & LDL concentration compared with controls, while significantly decreasing HD".

Hyperlipidemia is a lifelong condition that is treatable.

Dr. Robert B. Kelly at the Fairview Hospital/Cleveland Clinic Family Medicine Residency Program in the article "The most beneficial changes result from reducing intake of saturated and trans fats; increasing intake of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats; fortifying foods with plant stanols or sterols; isocalorically adding tree nuts to the diet; consuming one or two alcoholic drinks per day; and adopting a Portfolio, Mediterranean, low-carbohydrate, or low-fat diet. Smaller but still beneficial effects result from reducing intake of dietary cholesterol, increasing intake of soluble fiber and soy protein, and eating fatty marine fish or taking marine-derived omega-3 fatty acid supplements".

Therefore changing the diet pattern and engaging in regular physical exercise is the fundamental
options that not only can prevent the onset of the condition, particularly in people who are at a higher risk of hyperlipidemia, and also treat high blood cholesterol in patients who already have the condition.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of a genus, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS.

In the study to examine the effect of the aqueous extract of fennel on the reduced risk of hyperlipidemia, researchers conducted an experiment in Triton WR-1339-induced hyperlipidemia in mice.

Mice treated with the extract at different doses display a significant reduction of cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-cholesterol, and apolipoprotein-B decreased by 40%, 23%, 61%, and 61%, respectively.

Further analysis, the application also increased the levels of HDL-cholesterol and apolipoprotein A1 by 85% and 58%, respectively

The Mashhad University of Medical Sciences also conducted a study to assess the effects of Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) on lipid profiles, in sixty eligible postmenopausal women, randomly assigned into the fennel and placebo groups.

Measurement of total blood cholesterol, cholesterol fractions, and triglycerides was tested at the baseline, and after a three-month follow-up.

At the end of 3 months, blood profiles withdrawn from the women suggested
* There are no significant difference in triglyceride (P = 0.679), total cholesterol (P = 0.103), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C; P = 0.146) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C; P = 0.266) levels between the two groups.

* Fennel treated group demonstrates a significant borderline improvement for HDL-C and triglyceride, compared to the placebo group.

In additional differentiation of the process of the double-blind, randomized, and placebo-controlled trial, researchers suggested that longer durations, higher doses, and larger sample sizes are recommended to validate the results.

These results indicated that the intake of foods for the treatment of conditions or diseases must be on a long-term basis. The time of 3 months may be too short for foods to exert their potential effects.

Taken together, fennel may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia. Intake of fennel should be increased gradually for the food to reach its antihyperlipidemic stage, a longer duration may be needed. In other words, please be patient.

6-HMA Isolated from Broccoli Suppresses Oxidative Nephrotoxicity by Decreasing the Levels of ROS, Kidney Stress Markers and Increasing the Levels of Antioxidant

Kyle J. Norton

Kidneys are 2 bean-shaped organs found on the left and right side of the retroperitoneal space in the body.
The function of the kidneys is to filter blood and control fluids. They are the second detoxed organs besides the liver and skin.

Due to millions of tiny filters called nephrons in each kidney, people may not experience any kidney dysfunction symptoms at an early stage.

Kidney diseases are a class of medical conditions associated with reduced function of the kidney, in cases, complete loss of kidney function such as kidney failure.

Believe it or not, in the US, the leading causes of kidney failure and the end stage of chronic kidney diseases are diabetes and high blood pressure.

Nephrotoxicity or acute kidney failure is a condition of toxicity in the kidneys.

The disease is caused by the poisonous effect of prolonged use of certain medications and the accumulation of harmful chemicals.

According to the American physician association, long-term use of penicillins, cephalosporins, sulfonamides, thiazide diuretics, furosemide, NSAIDs, and rifampicin are associated to increase damage to the kidney.

And people age over 60 is at increased risk of nephrotoxicity if the above medicines are prescribed for prolonged periods.

Oxidative nephrotoxicity is a condition of kidney damage caused by overexpression of free radicals compared to levels of antioxidants.

Dr. Keiko Hosohata in the examination "Role of Oxidative Stress in Drug-Induced Kidney Injury",
Said, "Because the kidney is exposed to a larger proportion and higher concentration of drugs and toxins than other organs through the secretion of ionic drugs by tubular organic ion transporters across the luminal membranes of renal tubular epithelial cells, and through the reabsorption of filtered toxins into the lumen of the tubule, these cells are at greater risk for injury".

And "In fact, drug-induced kidney injury is a serious problem in clinical practice and accounts for roughly 20% of cases of acute kidney injury (AKI) among hospitalized patients".

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of kidney diseases, researchers examined the nephroprotective effects of 6-hydroxy-1-methylindole-3-acetonitrile (6-HMA), which was isolated from the roots of B. rapa, on cisplatin-induced toxicity in renal epithelial LLC-PK1 cells and in rats with acute renal injury

The study included 16 subjects that were randomized, and fifteen subjects completed all visits.

According to the tested analysis, in vitro and Vivo
* The pretreatment of LLC-PK1 cells with 6-HMA ameliorated cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity caused by oxidative stress.

* The pretreatment also decreased the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and kidney stress marker malondialdehyde (MDA) and increased levels of glutathione (GSH).

* Furthermore, 6-HMA inhibited cisplatin-induced heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression involved in oxidation and inflammation by the binding activity of NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), the antioxidant proteins that protect against oxidative damage triggered by injury and inflammation.

* Moreover, 6-HMA-administered rats showed lower levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, and urinary lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) associated with kidney damage than cisplatin alone-treated rats in the cisplatin-induced renal injury model.

* Additionally, 6-HMA inhibited the cisplatin-induced formation of MDA and GSH depletion and increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione reductase (GR).

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " these findings indicate 6-HMA is a major active constituent from the roots of B. Rapa to have a protective effect against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity by attenuating oxidative stress.".
Taken altogether, Brassica rapa processed abundantly 6-HMA may be considered supplements for the prevention of oxidative nephrotoxicity, ending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Cranberry #Anthocyanidins in the Promotion of Digestive Health by Attenuating Gut Barrier Dysfunction, Researchers say

Kyle J. Norton

The digestive system included the gastrointestinal tract, the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder play a critical role to maintain the body normal function by providing nutrients and fluids to the body and remove waste through the secretary system.

Digestion is a process of the digestive system by breaking down food for nutrients through mechanical and enzymatic action.

Gut Microbiota is a community of microorganisms living in the gastrointestinal tract.

Under normal conditions, gut microbiota plays a critical role in overall health, including improving the absorption of dietary nutrients in the digestive system, and protecting the body against xenobiotics and drug toxicity by facilitating excretion.

Futhermore, the gut microbiota is also involved in the maintenance of the structural integrity of the gut mucosal barrier, gut microbiota enhances the epithelial cells with a function to protect the intestine against invasive pathogens and ensure the function of the intestine in nutrient adsorption.

In immunomodulation, gut microbiota interacts with the immune system against inflammatory immune disorders and inhibits the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and non-gastrointestinal diseases caused by overexpression of bad bacteria.

However, an imbalance in the ratio of gut microbiota may have a negative on human health and diseases.

Dr. Yu-Jie Zhang wrote, "Gut bacteria are an important component of the microbiota ecosystem in the human gut, which is colonized by 1014 microbes, ten times more than the human cells. Gut bacteria play an important role in human health, such as supplying essential nutrients, synthesizing vitamin K, aiding in the digestion of cellulose, and promoting angiogenesis and enteric nerve function".

And, "However, they can also be potentially harmful due to the change of their composition when the gut ecosystem undergoes abnormal changes in the light of the use of antibiotics, illness, stress, aging, bad dietary habits, and lifestyle. Dysbiosis of the gut bacteria communities can cause many chronic diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, cancer, and autism".

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of digestive health, researchers examined the effect of Vaccinium berry fruit in modulating gut microbiota function.

According to the tested differentiation, cranberry anthocyanidins only interfered with the colonization of the gut by Escherichia coli in vitro but also attenuated gut barrier dysfunction caused by dietary insults in vivo.

The efficacy of cranberry anthocyanidins in the promotion of gut microbiota in the flavor of the good bacterias was attributed by the synergic activity between these proanthocyanidins, other cranberry components such as isoprenoids and xyloglucans.

Furthermore, cranberry constituents and their bioactive catabolites also have a strong effect on bacterial adhesion, coaggregation, and biofilm formation that may contribute clinical benefits on gastrointestinal and urinary tract infections,

Additionally, cranberry constituents and their bioactive catabolites also processed strong anti-inflammatory actions by mediating the gut microbiome.

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the improvement of the digestive health, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
