Cancers are a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissue and organs caused by the alternation of cell DNA.
At the advanced stage, malignant cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy cells and tissues.
There are many types of cancer, depending on the location where cancer begins.
As of today, researchers do not know what are the exact cause of cancers. however many researchers believe, exposure to environmental toxins, genetic mutation, and an unhealthy diet and lifestyle are the most common risk factors associated with the onset of the diseases.
Healthy cells become cancerous if they grow uncontrollably and disorderly out of range of a normal healthy cell population which can only divide between 40 and 60 times.
According to the Hayflick limit theory, most cell survival is totally dependent on the telomeres on the ends of each chromosome.
Every time, healthy cells undergo division, the telomeres are shortened. Once the telomeres shorten to a critical length, the cells will die off. However, cancer cells can divide indefinitely.
According to the statistic provided by the UK Cancers research, in 2012, an estimated 14.1 million new cases of cancer occurred worldwide.
Sadly, more than 4 in ten cancers occurring worldwide are in countries at a low or medium level of the Human Development Index (HDI).
The Human Development Index (HDI) is a statistic composite index of life expectancy, education, and per capita income indicators, according to the definition.
In 2018, over 1,7 million new cases of cancer are diagnosed in the US, and approximately over 600,000 patients will die from the diseases.
The four most common types of cancer, occurring worldwide are lung, female breast, bowel, and prostate cancer.
Early diagnosis as always is the best way to improve the survival rate. Depending on types of cancer, most cancers have a 100% 5 years survival rate, if they are diagnosed at the stage of 0 and 1.
Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.
On finding a natural wholefood for the prevention of malignant tumors, researchers examined the effects of pierisin, a protein purified from pupae of the cabbage butterfly, Pieris rapae on the human gastric cancer TMK-1 cell line and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).
According to the results of differentiation,* Pierisin showed cytotoxic effects in all the human cells tested, with IC50 values ranging from 0.043 ng/ml to 150 ng/ml.
* Compared to other cancer cell lines, the cervical carcinoma cell line, HeLa, was the most sensitive to pierisin, showing a 1000-fold less IC50 value than that of HUVECs.
* Furthermore, pierisin clearly induced apoptotic cell death in most cancer cell lines and HUVECs through multiple different pathways including the proinflammatory, tumor-suppressive and immunomodulatory pathways.
Based on the results, researchers wrote, "Pierisin may thus be a promising new candidate for cancer therapy".
Taken altogether, cabbage may process anti-cancer activity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Cucumber Cucurbitacin B Enhances the Chemo-Drug Effects on Lymphoma, Particularly the Resistance to Burkitt's Lymphoma Ramos Cells, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Lymphoma is a medical and chronic condition associated with abnormal growth of lymphocytes, a type of white blood cells of the immune system that fight infection.
Lymphocytes included natural killer cells T cells and B cells are found in the lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, bone marrow, and other parts of the body.
The condition can be classified into 2 types
* Non-Hodgkin is the common form of lymphoma found in most patients.
* Hodgkin
According to the statistics, in the US, this year, approximately, 8,000 people will be diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, leading to the death of 1,000 patients with the disease.
Believe it or not, Hodgkin's lymphoma is treatable, especially in its early stages. The 5-year survival rate for all patients diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma is 92%.
Most cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma are found in adults 65 years of age and over compared to the age of 15 and 40 or older than 55 in Hodgkin lymphoma.
People with a weakened immune system, autoimmunity, viral infectious disease, family history, exposure to benzene and radiotherapy, and past history of Hodgkin or non-Hodgkin lymphoma are some factors that may increase the risk of the disease.
Some researchers suggested that genetic proposition may have a strong implication with the onset of lymphoma.
Dr. Robert E. Ferrell, the lead scientist wrote, "Hereditary or primary lymphedema is a developmental disorder of the lymphatic system which leads to a disabling and disfiguring swelling of the extremities"
And, " Hereditary lymphedema generally shows an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance with reduced penetrance, variable expression and variable age at onset".
The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae, and is native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.
In finding a natural and potential compound for the treatment of lymphoma, researchers examined the effect of Cucurbitacin B (CuB) as an ATO and STAT3 inhibitor against lymphoma.
Where Arsenic trioxide (ATO) is a chemotherapy drug used for the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia.
And STAT3 is a protein that regulates genes involved in cell growth and division.
Injection of CuB showed to eliminate the apoptosis resistance of Burkitt's lymphoma Ramos cells to ATO synergistically.
In other words, CuB enhanced the drug effects in the inhibition of lymphoma, particularly in resistance to Burkitt's lymphoma Ramos cells.
The results were attributed to the bioactive compound that blocks the activation of protein STAT3 associated with cancer cell proliferation and modulates the expression of proteins involved in pro and anti-apoptosis.
Interestingly, the combination of CuB and ATO kills cancer cells without causing harm to normal cell lines.
In the nude murine lymphoma model, the synergistic effect of the combination of CuB and ATO was once again confirmed by exhibiting significant apoptosis induction and tumor growth inhibition.
Dr. Ding X, the lead scientist said, "CuB synergistically enhances the apoptosis-inducing effect of ATO by inhibiting STAT3 phosphorylation in Ramos cells".
Taken altogether, cucumber combined with primary medicine may be used for the treatment of lymphoma, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of CuB in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#CruciferousVegetables Inhibit the Parameters Associated with the Reduced Risk of Ischemic Stroke and Neurological Deficits, Researchers say
Kyle J. Norton
Stroke is a medical condition caused by reduced blood flow to the brain resulting in cell death due to a blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or the leaking or bursting of a blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke).
In other words, stroke can be caused by either ischemia, due to lack of blood flow, or hemorrhagic, due to bleeding.
A stroke is a medical emergency. Early intervention in most cases can minimize brain damage and potential complications.
Sadly, stroke is one of the most common causes of death worldwide.
In the US, according to statistics, approximately 800,000 people suffer a stroke of which 600,000 of these are first attacks, and 185,000 are recurrent attacks. Nearly three-quarters of all strokes occur in people over the age of 65.
There is a general belief that stroke is an accumulation over a long period of an unhealthy diet with red meat and processed meats in the induction of artery-clogging.
Atherosclerosis associated with the hardening of the arteries caused by the buildup of fatty substances in the arteries can lead to stroke.
In other words, if the blood vessel that feeds the brain is blocked, a stroke occurs.
Some researchers suggested that increased intake of fruits and vegetables such as carrots accompanied with good fats such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel may have a substantial effect in reduced inflammation in the arteries, improved blood flow, and decreased the chance of blood clots.
Not all strokes can lead to permanent brain damage. Some people with a temporary disruption of blood flow to the brain do not result in permanent damage.
Besides aging, smoking, medical conditions such as unmanaged high blood pressure and cholesterol and diabetes, obesity, and physical inactivity are some of the prevalent factors found in stroke patients.
Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, and species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climates for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.
In finding a potential remedy for reducing the mortality rate of cardiovascular diseases, researchers examined the therapeutic potential and protective effect of D3T found in cruciferous vegetables for the treatment of ischemic stroke.
The study included selected mice subjected to transient middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (tMCAO/R) who were administered with vehicle or D3T to evaluate the effect of D3T in cerebral brain injury.
Based on the results of the experiment,
* D3T reduced infarct size, decreased brain edema, lessened blood-brain barrier disruption, and ameliorated neurological deficits.
* D3T suppressed microglia (MG) activation induced by stroke and inhibited peripheral inflammatory immune cell infiltration of CNS in the ischemic brain.
* D3T also exerted a protective effect on ischemic stroke against the induction of oxidative stress by mediating the improved expression of the antioxidant enzyme Nrf2.
Based on the results, researchers said, "D3T confers protection against ischemic stroke, which is mediated through suppression of MG activation and inhibition of CNS peripheral cell infiltration, and that the protective effect of D3T in ischemic stroke is dependent on the activation of Nrf2".
Taken together, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional remedies for protection in ischemic strokes, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Cucurbitacin B Inhibits Non Small Lung Cancer Cells through Cell Cycle Arrest and Promoted Cytotoxity, in Vitro and Vivo
Kyle J. Norton
Lung cancer is a medical condition that caused abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. The most common form of primary lung cancer is derived from epithelial cells.
Non-small lung cancer is the most common type of lung cancer that accounts for 80% to 85% of all cases of lung cancers, usually grows and spreads methodically and predictably.
The most common types of lung cancers include
* Squamous-cell carcinoma often found in an outer area of the lung
* Large-cell carcinoma found in the center of the lung by an air tube
* Adenocarcinoma is found in any part of the lung.
According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, lung cancer is a leading cause of death among both men and women. Most people diagnosed with lung cancer are 65 or older, compared to a very small number of people diagnosed who are younger than 45.
The most common prevalent factors of non-small cell lung cancer include
1. Smoking
Smoking is a major cause of lung cancer by enhancing oxidation stress by combining the inhaled air with cancer-causing chemical substances (carcinogens) in the cigarette.
Normally, our body can withstand and repair this damage, but prolonged exposure your lung to these dangerous carcinogens can result in lung cancer development.
2. Second-hand smoke
Prolonged exposure to second-hand smoke can also increase the risk of lung cancer.
3. Exposure to certain chemicals
There is an increased risk of lung cancer for people who inhale or expose to certain industrial chemicals such as radon gas, arsenic, chromium, nickel, etc. in the workplace.
4. Family history
The risk of lung cancer increased if one of the members of your direct family has lung cancer.
5. Lung disease
The risk of ling can caner increase if you have or previously had certain types of lung disease
6. Excessive drinking
According to the study by Freudenheim et al., R. Curtis Ellison MD suggested that alcohol intake of more than 2 drinks per day is associated with a small increased risk of lung cancer. This study, like others, suggests a weak, positive association between consuming larger amounts of alcohol (>2 drinks a day) and lung cancer risk.
Out of many risk factors, some researchers aging may be one of the major condition as most patients with lung cancer was diagnosed at the age of 65 and over.
Dr. Federico Venuta, the lead researcher wrote, "The respiratory system undergoes a number of structural, physiological, and immunological changes with age. For this reason, at this stage of our life, it is not always easy to differentiate disease from a normal state".
And, "From the epidemiological point of view, early-stage lung cancer is observed more frequently in elderly patients; in fact, stage I disease increases from 79% in patients younger than 65 years to 87% in those above 75 years (25). Also, resectability obviously increases with age (1,26): from 15.3% in those younger than 54 years to 25% above 75 years".
The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongings to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.
With an aim to find a natural and potential compound for the treatment of non-small lung cancer (NSCLC) with no side effects, researchers investigated Cucurbitacin B (CuB), a natural compound isolated from cucumber and other vegetable anti-NSCLC in vitro.
Four NSCLC cells (H1299, A549, HCC-827, and H661) in vitro and the highly aggressive H1299 xenograft in vivo were included in the study.
According to the tested assays, CuB significantly induced G2/M cell-cycle arrest and mitochondrial apoptosis.
Injection by the thiol antioxidant N-acetylcysteine (NAC) in the experiment showed to attenuate all cellular effects of CuB completely.
Interestingly, pretreatment with glutathione synthesis inhibitor glutathione-sulfoximine (BSO), significantly exacerbated CuB's cytotoxic effects against the tested cancer cells in both vitro and vivo.
Further analysis of the anti-NSCLC efficacy of CuB, researchers found that CuB induces cell death via rapidly and significantly decreases the levels of protein thiols and GSH/GSSG ratio by disrupting cellular redox balance induced cytotoxicity.
Dr. Kausar H, the lead scientist said, "CuB interacts with and modulates cellular thiols to mediate its anti-cancer effects. Collectively, our data shed new light on the working mechanisms of CuB and demonstrate its therapeutic potential against NSCLC".
Furthermore, CuB also exerted anti-NSCLC in vitro and in vivo CuB by exhibiting a strong anti-migratory and anti-invasive ability against metastatic NSCLC at nanomolar concentrations.
In other words, CuB showed significant tumor angiogenesis-inhibitory effects by the inhibition of migratory, invasive, and tube-forming capacities of human umbilical vein endothelial cells.
Moreover, in the experimental EMT model, CuB also suppressed the overexpression of protein associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines in the initiation of cellular change and the Wnt/β-catenin signaling axis in stimulating the production of the formation of new blood vessels to facilitate cancer proliferation.
Taken altogether, cucumber processed with a high amount of CuB may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of non-small cell lung cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of CuB in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Angelica Shows Protective Effects Against Neuro-Inflammation and the Onset of Cancer in Vitro, Scientists Suggest

The central system is the complex of nerve tissues including the brain and spinal cord with functions to respond to the integrating sensory information.
Neuroinflammation is a process of the immune system that responds to harmful pathogens that induced oxidative stress to the brain.
Neuroinflammation is also the inflammation of nervous tissue associated with the immune response in the first phase of infection including infection, traumatic brain injury, toxic metabolites, or autoimmunity.
There are many risk factors associated with the onset of neuroinflammation similar to other tissue inflammation, including infection, traumatic brain injury, toxic metabolites, or autoimmunity.
Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system in which the macrophages of the first defense stimulates the production of a blood palette to cover the wound in case of injury and the production of proinflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to fence off the foreign pathogens.
Inflammation also can be triggered by the immune mistakenly attacking the body tissues in cases of autoimmune disease.
Neuroinflammatory disease can be acute or chronic. Chronic neuroinflammation that leads to the activation of glial cells and the recruitment of inflammatory cytokines into the brain is found to associate with neurodegenerative diseases.
Most cases of neuroinflammatory disease are associated with the loss of neuronal structure and function. can be measured by the typical inflammatory markers, including CSF Aβ1-42, tau, and p-tau181, and a panel of 37 neuroinflammatory markers in patients with Alzheimer's disease.
On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of neurological disorders, scientists examined the effects of dangguishaoyao-san (DSS) (Angelica sinensis, Paeoniae radix, Rhizoma Ligusticum, Poria cocos, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, and Rhizoma Alismatis) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated BV-2 microglial cells.
Angelica or Danggui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.
The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen the heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.
According to the results of BV-2 cells pretreated with 0.58-1.16 mg/mL of DSS for 2 h and then treated with 1 μg/mL LPS for 24 h,
* DSS treatment at concentrations of 0.58-1.16 mg/mL did not induce significant cytotoxicity.
* DSS attenuated the release of pro-inflammatory factors, such as interleukin-1β (IL-1β), iNOS and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in LPS-induced BV-2 cells.
* DSS attenuated the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, TLR2, and TLR4 by decreasing TLR4 and TLR protein levels and decreased levels of phosphorylation of IκB which regulates the cellular response to inflammation in LPS-induced BV-2 cells.
* DSS also down-regulated the nuclear translocation of p65 in the initiation of cancer cell proliferation and survival.
Based on the results, researchers suggest, " DSS has a protective effect on neuroinflammation in LPS-induced BV-2 microglial cells through the TLRs/NF-κB signaling pathway".
Taken together, angelica may be considered an antioxidant remedy for the treatment of neuroinflammation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Fennel Extract Processes Antipyretic Activity, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found food and plant processes the antipyretic activity comparable to those of acetaminophen in patients with fever, some studies suggested.
Fever is a natural reaction caused by the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines of the immune system in protecting our body from damage and injury against foreign pathogens during the acute phase of infection.
According to medical literature, a person is not considered to have a significant fever until the temperature is above 100.4 F (38.0 C).
Although fever is a common syndrome, however, if you or your kid are experiencing fever accompanied by symptoms of a severe headache, unusual skin rash, sensitivity to bright light, persistent stiff neck and pain, mental confusion, particularly persistent vomiting, and difficulty breathing or chest pain, you or your kid should go to the hospital right the way.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus Foeniculum, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.
The plant and food have been used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS,...
In the study to evaluate the antipyretic effect of the aqueous extract of the herbal coded formulation containing an equal amount of Salix alba, Emblica officinalis, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Adhatoda vasica, Viola odorata, in a yeast induced pyrexia model in rabbits, researchers found that after recording the results immediately before the administration of the extractor paracetamol and again at 1 hour, application of the extract at 240mg/kg dose significant reduces elevated temperature as compared with that of standard drug paracetamol (150mg/kg).
Fennel extract applied alone showed antipyretic activity against hyperpyrexia in mice, induced by S.C. administration of 2 mL/100 g of a 20% aqueous suspension of brewer's yeast.
As an antipyretic agent, ethanolic extract of F. vulgare fruit showed a moderate antipyretic activity that was statistically significant after 30 and 90 min.
These results showed that herbal coded medicine at a dose of 240mg/kg and fennel extract have marked an antipyretic activity in animal models and this was strongly supported by the ethnopharmacological uses of medicinal plants.
Furthermore, in the examine the hepatotoxicity induced by acetaminophen caused by the excessive production of N-acetyl-para-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI) in the induction of symptoms such as fever due to inflammation, researchers showed that application of trans anethole, an aromatic compound isolated from fennel exerted a significant effect in the inhibited pro-inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandin (PGE2), cytokines (TNF, IL-1) and nitric oxide (NO)thus decreasing the risk of fever caused by an overreaction of the immune system.
Application of AN at doses 125 and 250mg/kg once a day for seven days prevented the changes caused by the APAP overdose.
Additionally, researchers also discovered, AN infection prevents the overexpression of proinflammatory mediators such as NO, TNF, IL-1α, MIP-1α, and MCP-1 and induced the up-regulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4 and IL-10), thus reducing the onset of fever.
Taken together, there is no doubt that fennel may be considered a functional food for the treatment of inflammatory induced fever.

#Quercetin Found in #Healthyfood #Onion inhibits the Angiogenesis Against the Onset of Cancer, Researchers Show
Kyle J. Norton
Angiogenesis is the process that promotes the formation of new blood vessels involving many factors including the migration, growth, and differentiation of endothelial cells.
In normal cells, angiogenesis is important for the cells to obtain nutrients and metabolites through the small blood vessels. Angiogenesis has been found to process a therapeutic effect for the treatment of ischemic heart disease, peripheral arterial disease, and wound healing.
Dr. Papetti M, the lead scientist at the Tufts University School of Medicine said, "Normal angiogenesis ensures that developing or healing tissues receive an adequate supply of nutrients".
In cancers, angiogenesis stimulated by the tumor cells has been associated with tumor proliferation and metastasis.
More precisely, the angiogenesis process is a function of a double sword, on one hand, the process provides an ideal condition for the treatment of diseases and wound healing. On the other hand, it promotes invasive and overgrowth tumors.
Dr. Papetti M continued, "Tumor cells induce the formation of new blood supply from the preexisting vasculature, and this affords tumor cells the ability to survive and propagate in a hostile environment"
Collectively, " both normal and tumor-induced neovascularization fulfill the essential role of satisfying the metabolic demands of tissue".
Based on the findings some researchers suggested, by inhibiting the process of blood vessels formation of the tumor, cancer may be curable.
Dr. Dai X, the lead researcher in the study of "Suppression of murine B-cell lymphoma growth by trichosanthin through anti-angiogenesis" showed, "trichosanthin TCS, ( an immunosuppressive and anti-tumor protein) inhibits murine B-cell lymphoma growth by anti-angiogenesis was reported. First, TCS inhibits tumor growth and prolonged survival significantly in vivo, and TCS depressed the formation of new blood vessels around the tumor in a dose-dependent manner".
The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belongings to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.
Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.
In finding a potent ingredient that processes anti-cancer activity researchers studied the antiangiogenic activity of quercetin isolated from onion, using ex vivo, in vivo, and in vitro models.
According to the tested differentiation, quercetin at non-toxic concentrations significantly inhibited the microvessel sprouting associated with cancer cell proliferation.
Furthermore, the activity of cancer cell migration, invasion, and tube formation of endothelial cells involved in the process of angiogenesis.was also significantly decreased by the administration of quercetin.
Quercetin treatment inhibited ex vivo angiogenesis observed by chicken egg chorioallantoic membrane assay (CAM) and matrigel plug assay.
Moreover, quercetin suppressed vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) which has been found to induce the formation of a blood vessel for the progression of the tumor.
Additionally, downstream pathways associated with the promotion of survival and growth in response to extracellular signals that induce angiogenesis were also inhibited by quercetin in HUVECs.
Quercetin at the concentration of 20 mg/kg/d significantly reduced the volume and the weight of solid tumors in a prostate xenograft mouse model by targeting angiogenesis.
Quercetin was also found to inhibit the cancer cell viability and induced apoptosis in prostate cancer cells.
In other words, quercetin inhibits tumor growth and angiogenesis by targeting the proteins and signaling pathways that initiate the growth of new blood vessels.
Taken together, onion processed with a higher amount of quercetin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
