Degenerative disease is a progression that causes degenerative cell changes due to aging, affecting tissues or organs, which will increasingly deteriorate over time. ...
Normal bodily wear and tear or lifestyle choices (such as exercise or eating habits) may worsen degenerative diseases, but this depends on the disease.
Epidemiologically, the most common degenerative diseases include
* Alzheimer's disease (AD).
*Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease).
* Cancers.
* Cystic fibrosis.
Cervical spondylosis is age-related wear and tear that affects the spinal disks in your neck.
In other words, these age-related wear and tear cause the disks to dehydrate and shrink, leading to osteoarthritis development, including bony projections along the edges of bones (bone spurs).
Cervical spondylosis is very common and worsens with age.
The most common symptoms of cervical spondylosis are neck stiffness and pain, a headache that may originate in the neck, pain in the shoulder or arms, inability to fully turn the head or bend the neck, sometimes interfering with driving, and grinding noise or sensation when the neck is turned.
In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of degenerative diseases, scientists examined the clinical effect of cervical paravertebral nerve block combined with Mailuoning and Angelica sinensis injection in the treatment of nerve-root-type cervical spondylosis.
A total of 120 patients with nerve-root type cervical spondylosis were randomly divided into a research group (n=60) that was treated by cervical paravertebral nerve block combined with Mailuoning and Angelica sinensis injection compared to the control group which was applied with glucocorticoid nerve block therapy.
According to the results of the comparison, the total therapeutic response rate of the research group was relatively higher than the control.
By comparing various clinical effect scores between the two groups, the research group also had advantages over the control group.
Furthermore, The treatment satisfaction degree of the research group was also higher than that of the control group.
Based on the findings, researchers concluded, " application of cervical paravertebral nerve block combined with Mailuoning and Angelica sinensis injection can achieve better medical results and achieve higher treatment satisfaction degree".
Taken together, angelica used together with other herbal medicines may be considered an adjunct remedy for the treatment of cervical spondylosis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Turmeric Reduces Erythema, Scaling, and the Duration of Lesions and Improves Quality of Life in Patients with #ScalpPsoriasis
Kyle J. Norton
Psoriasis is a skin condition characterized by the speed-up of the life cycle of skin cells, leading to cells building up rapidly on the surface of the skin.
Symptoms of psoriasis are caused by the extra skin cells forming scales and red patches that can be itchy and painful.
Epidemiologically, psoriasis patches can range from a few spots or large areas. The most common form of psoriasis is plaque psoriasis, a condition that induces dry, raised, red skin lesions (plaques) covered with silvery scales.
The causes of psoriasis are not identified. Researchers do not know why people with
the same health conditions in the same family, some are prone to psoriasis while others do not.
Certain risk factors such as family history, viral and bacterial infections, weakened immune systems, persistent stress, smoking, and obesity are associated with the risk of psoriasis.
Conventionally, topical corticosteroids are the most commonly prescribed medication for the treatment of the condition, particularly in patients with mild to moderate psoriasis.
If you are using corticosteroids for the treatment of psoriasis, please make sure you know all the side effects for preventive measures.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of psoriasis, an autoimmune and recurrent chronic inflammatory skin disorder, researchers examined a turmeric tonic as immune modulation and anti-inflammatory therapy on scalp psoriasis.
The study included a total of 40 patients with mild-to-moderate scalp psoriasis that fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were randomly allocated into two groups.
The treatment group received turmeric tonic twice a day for 9 weeks, whereas the other group received a placebo applied in the same manner.
Based on the results from the assessment of baseline, weeks 3, 6, and 9, the treatment group not only significantly reduced the erythema, scaling, and the duration of lesions (PASI score), but also improved the patient's quality of life. compared to a placebo.
Researchers after taking other factors into account wrote, "The clinical effects of turmeric tonic on scalp psoriasis were satisfactory overall. This formulation could be considered as a treatment for scalp psoriasis".
In order to reveal more information about turmeric anti-psoriasis activity, researchers reviewed the effect of turmeric in the inhibition of inflammatory enzymes mainly involved in the inflammatory process of psoriasis.
The study included the examination of the randomized, clinical, and therapeutic benefit of a novel topical formulation, including turmeric on 34 patients with mild to moderate plaque psoriasis.
The treatment group showed a significant improvement in the symptoms of psoriasis and
the clinical and quality of life parameters compared to the untreated group.
Based on the findings, Dr. the lead scientist said, "The proposed microemulgel may well be considered as an alternative in some patients and most likely as an add-on therapeutic option for many patients suffering from plaque psoriasis".
Taken together, turmeric processed bioactive ingredient curcumin may be considered a supplement for the treatment of psoriasis,, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Cruciferousvegetables Protect the Nerves System and Reduce Risk of Diseases through Multiple Mechanisms The Potential Neuro-Protective Healthy Foods
Kyle J. Norton
Neuroprotection is a process to preserve the neuronal structure and/or function against the death or gradual death of neurons, including the use of medicines and herbs.
In other words, neuroprotection protects the neuronal integrity against the reduction in the rate of neuronal loss over time inducing neurological disease, including neurodegenerative disease.
Neurological diseases are the medical conditions of brain disorders. Anything that involves structural, biochemical, or electrical abnormalities in the brain, spinal cord, or other nerves, including brain damage is considered neuron disease.
Neurodegenerative disease is the class of conditions associated with the progressive loss of neurons that occurred mostly in older adults, including dementia. The most common dementia in the US is Alzheimer`s disease (AD).
Alzheimer's disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder caused by the slowly lost of neuron in the brain that affects memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks as the disease progress into the advanced stage.
According to the statistic, dementia affects over 47.5 million people worldwide, approximately 58 percent are living in low and middle-income countries.
Believe it or not, 5.8 million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer's dementia in 2019, and two-thirds of people with Alzheimer's disease are women.
Conventionally, as of today, there is no cure for dementia. Treatment of dementia is focusing improving dementia symptoms and slowing down the progression of the disease.
Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings of the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, and species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climates for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of neurological diseases, researchers examined cruciferous vegetable neuroprotective activity.
According to the dietary information,
* SFN, a potent bioactive compound found in the veggies upregulated the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) antioxidant response element (ARE) genetic pathway by increasing the antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.
* SFN was found to protect the nervous system from many diseases and toxins in a few small human trials.
* Furthermore, according to the preclinical data, SFN protected the nervous system through multiple mechanisms, reducing the risk of many diseases and the burden of symptoms in existing conditions.
In other words, SFN processed protective effects in a multitude of neurological diseases and toxin exposures.
Based on the evidence, researchers said, "SFN is a promising neuroprotective phytochemical which needs further human trials to evaluate its efficacy in preventing and decreasing the burden of many neurological diseases".
Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables may be considered neuroprotective functional foods, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Fermented Extract From #Herbal #Elecampane Protects the Liver by Enhancing Its #Antioxidant Activity
Kyle J. Norton
The liver is the largest internal organ in the human body and the only organ which can regenerate itself. The liver is the first line of the bodily toxin defense by filtering the blood that comes from the digestive tract, before passing it to the rest of the body.
The liver also produces cholesterol that plays a critical role in building strong cell membranes, producing steroid hormones and vitamin D, and aiding the digestive function in food absorption and detoxifying chemicals and metabolizing drugs.
Furthermore, the liver also processes a function of detoxifying chemicals and metabolizes drugs.
The hepatoprotective or liver protective effect is an action that maintains the liver's healthy functioning against any harmful toxins.
Symptoms of liver diseases include jaundice, abdominal pain, and swelling, swelling in the legs and ankles, itchy skin, dark urine, pale stool color, and a tendency to bruise easily.
There are no exact causes of liver disease. Viruses, toxins, genetics, alcohol, and unknown causes are some prevalent factors found in patients with chronic liver disease, including cancer.
Liver damage and disease can also be caused by long-term intake of certain medications, such as paracetamol, and Illegal drugs such as cocaine.
In the US, most cases of liver disease are a result of hepatitis viral infection and autoimmune diseases. Infectious viral hepatitis can produce toxins to protect them against the antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body and prevent the attack of the systematic immune response.
Furthermore, in recent years, excessive alcohol drinking has been found to induce alcoholic liver disease in many parts of Asia and America.
Some researchers suggested overweight and obese and congenital diseases such as Hemochromatosis and Wilson’s disease also are prevalent risk factors for liver damage and diseases.
On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, scientists examined the hepatoprotective effect of Inula Britannica using fermentation on HepG2 cells.
Elecampane, also known as Horse-heal (Inula helenium) is a perennial composite plant, genus nulla, belonging to Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe, and Asia.
The plant has been used in traditional and herbal medicine in treating bronchitis or emphysema, night sweats, pulmonary tuberculosis, irritating cough, catarrhal discharges, etc.
According to the tested analysis,
* The Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) found I. Britannica extract was enhanced from 2.06 to 10.28 μg/mg during fermentation (p < 0.001).
* The fermentation also increased the DPPH radical-scavenging ABTS radical-scavenging, and superoxide anion-scavenging abilities to 92.65%, 694.25 μM Trolox/mL, and 86.38%, respectively.
* At 500 μg/mL (p < 0.05). Cupric-ion-reducing capacity with formation of the Cu+-neocuproine complex increased by 5.88%, 6.38%, 3.24%, and 8.55% at 62.5 to 500 μg/mL. Ferric-ion-reducing capacity of the fermented extract increased by 20%, 7.16%, 3.85%, and 5.45% at each concentration (p < 0.05).
* Furthermore, compared to the unfermented extracts yielded cell viability of 91.42%, 90.59%, 88.38%, and 79.17%, the fermented extract yielded 100.28%, 99.66%, 96.15%, and 89.90%, respectively.
* Moreover, the fermented extract decreased the liver stress marker of alanine transaminase activity from 117.2 to 61.7 U/mL in the ethanol-damaged HepG2 cell line (p < 0.01).
Based on the results, researchers suggest, " Overall, both antioxidant and hepatoprotective effect increased by fermentation in I. Britannica extract.
Taken together, Elecampane may be considered a liver protective remedy, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#SodiumFerulate found in Angelica Exhibited Anti-Inflammatory and Anti-Apoptotic Properties Against the Onset of #Osteoarthritis, Scientists Say
Kyle J. Norton
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a form of arthritis, found in the general term of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) characterized by wear and tear on joints.
The chronic and medical condition affects over 25 million people in the United States alone.
The characteristics of osteoarthritis are aching pain, stiffness, or difficulty in moving the joint or joints. Therefore one must understand the differences in prevalence and incidence estimates of osteoarthritis (OA), compared to other types of arthritis.
Furthermore, the pain usually gets worse in a change of weather, at night, and in advanced diseases, and the pain can occur even at rest.
In contrast to the general belief, osteoarthritis only damages the joints of the hands, and knees, but also causes inflammation of the joints in your hips and spine.
The condition is a slow developmental disease, often starting in the 40s and 50s, and affects almost all people to some degree by age 80.
The common risk factors of osteoarthritis are aging, gender, improper healing of injured joints at a young age, obesity, and bone deformity. However, people who have a job with tasks that place repetitive stress on a particular joint are associated with the onset of osteoarthritis in most industrial countries.
According to the statistic from the NIH, osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder in the US. Among adults, 60 years of age or older the prevalence of symptomatic knee and sadly OA affects approximately 10% of men and 13% of women.
Epidemiological strongly suggested that obese and overweight have a strong impact on the weight-bearing joints, the genetic preposition of a patient can make such a patient more susceptible to the disease compared to others who do not. People with a joint injury that did heal properly in a younger age and people with occupations that require standing for long periods of time, repetitive bending, heavy lifting, or other movements, and the increase in age are associated with an increased risk of the onset of the disease.
On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of aging-related diseases, scientists examined the angelica phytochemical, sodium ferulate, and a polysaccharide fraction on osteoarthritis animal models or in human chondrocytes stimulated by the proinflammatory cytokine, Interleukine-1β.
Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.
The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen the heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.
According to the results of the experiment,* Sodium ferulate found in angelica exhibited marked anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic properties by inhibiting the TNF/TNFR signal transduction pathway associated with inflammation and autoimmunity.
* On another hand, the polysaccharide fraction which contains a mixture of various carbohydrates was found to promote proteoglycan biosynthesis in the cartilage matrix by stimulating the activity of the UDP-glycosyltransferases that synthesize the chondroitin sulfate chains of aggrecans.
In other words, both chemical compounds demonstrated strong protective effects against osteoarthritis through different mechanisms.
based on the findings, researchers said, "the combined action of sodium ferulate and polysaccharides fraction would prevent cartilage destruction in osteoarthritis and favor cartilage repair".
Taken altogether, herbal angelica may be considered an antioxidant remedy for the treatment of osteoarthritis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Broccoli' SFN Reduces the Onset of #LungCancer Through Induced Cancer Cell Apoptosis and Inhibition of #HistoneDeacetylase (HDAC), Researchers Find
Kyle J Notonr
The lung-formed part of the circulatory system plays an essential and unique role in taking oxygen to the blood and exhaling carbon dioxide from the blood.
Additionally, the lung also processes other abilities in protecting our body against disease, including
* By balancing the pH levels, the lung protects the body against the accumulation of too much carbon dioxide. High levels of carbon dioxide are known to induce acidity in the body.
* By removing small blood clots the lung protects the body against the forming of air embolisms.
* The airflow produced by the lung also helps us to speak.
* The lung also protects against the infection through the secretion of immunoglobulin A.
Any part of the lung injury can reduce lung function, leading to either obstructive or restrictive lung diseases or mixed lung disease, depending on a person's breathing.
Lung cancer is a chronic medical condition characterized by abnormal growth of the cells in the lung tissue.
The most common form of primary lung cancer is derived from epithelial cells.
The exact cause of lung cancer is not identified. However, epidemiologically, smoking, second smoke, exposure to certain chemicals, family history, people who have lung disease, and excessive drinking are some prevalent factors associated with lung cancer development.
According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, lung cancer accounts for 14% of all new cancers diagnosed in the US. In 2018, there were about 234,030 new cases of lung cancer (121,680 in men and 112,350 in women). Lung cancer also causes the death of 83,550 men and 70,500 women in the same year.
Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.
With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined the chemopreventive role of SFN through the inhibition of histone deacetylase (HDAC) associated with the regulation of DNA expression, in two different lung cancer cells by in vitro and in vivo mouse models.
According to the experimental results from A549 and H1299 lung cancer cells were treated with SFN for 48h,
* SFN inhibited HDAC activity and increased the levels of acetylated histones H3 and H4 involved in cell death in all two lung cancer cells.
* Furthermore, SFN induced cancer cell apoptosis, increased the accumulation of cells at G0/G1 and G2/M, and arrested cells at the S phase.
* Moreover, SFN also suppressed lung cancer growth in a xenograft mouse model in vivo.
Based on the results, researchers wrote, " the chemopreventive effect of SFN is associated with inhibition of HDAC activity, thereby attenuating lung cancer growth. Therefore, these findings suggest that SFN may be a therapeutic agent for lung cancer through the inhibition of HDAC".
Taken altogether, broccoli processed abundantly SFN may be considered supplements for the prevention of lung cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Kidneys are bean-shaped organs located below the rib cage, one on each side of your spine with a function to filter out blood and remove waste through urinary secretion.
The kidney also plays a critical in maintaining the levels of fluids in the body, by removing extra fluids to make urine.
Furthermore, the kidney also regulates electrolytes, and blood pressure, maintains acid-base balance, and produces hormone calcitriol, renin, and erythropoietin.
Kidney diseases are a class of medical conditions associated with reduced function of the kidney, in cases, complete loss of kidney function such as kidney failure.
Kidney dysfunction reduces the body's ability to clean and filter extra water from your blood, leading to fluid retention and high blood pressure in the early stage. Believe it or not, people with a kidney function of 10% do not show signs of kidney dysfunction and symptoms.
In other words, kidney disease often has no symptoms until a very advanced stage.
In the US, the leading causes of kidney failure and the end stage of chronic kidney diseases are diabetes and high blood pressure.
Kidney failure or renal failure or end-stage kidney disease is a medical condition in which the kidneys are functioning at less than 15% of normal.
Acute kidney failure, which develops rapidly and may resolve quickly, is a result of insufficient blood flow to the kidneys such as renal hypertension. These types of kidney dysfunction can be cured if the causes are found.
Most cases of acute kidney dysfunction may be associated with toxins accumulated in the kidney organs, leading to the condition of nephrotoxicity.
Ficus religiosa or sacred fig is a species of fig that belongs to Moraceae, the fig or mulberry family, native to the Indian subcontinent and Indochina.
In finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of kidney diseases, researchers elucidated the effects of nephroprotective and curative effects of F. religiosa latex methanol extract against cisplatin-induced acute renal failure.
The study included rats that were divided into five groups.
* Group 1 was administered acacia (2% w/v) of 5 ml/kg throughout the experiment;
* Group 2 was treated with a single dose of cisplatin (5 mg/kg i.p.) on the 1st day;
* Group 3 (200 mg/kg p.o.) of extract control for the 1st to 10th day,
* Group 4 (200 mg/kg p.o.) of extract from the 1st to 10th day and a single dose of cisplatin (5 mg/kg, i.p.) on the 11th day while
* Group 5 received the same dose of cisplatin on day 1 and extract (200 mg/kg p.o.) from the 7th to 16th day.
According to the results of the experiment
* The cisplatin-treated group 2 showed significantly reduced renal functions, changes of biochemical parameters, and histopathology in the kidney including increased lipid peroxidation, kidney oxidative stress, and inflammatory markers and reduced levels of antioxidant enzymes.
* However, all parameters were restored back to the near-normal with the 200 mg/kg of extract in the curative and protective groups.
In other words, F. religiosa latex methanol extract showed a strong kidney protective activity against toxicity induced by the cisplatin treatment.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "These findings demonstrated that F. religiosa latex and constituents have excellent nephroprotective and curative activities and thus have great potential as a source for natural health products".
Taken together, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention of acute kidney toxicity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
