#Cranberry Maybe Considers Chemopreventive Agents by Diminishing the Parameters Associated with the Onset of Cancer, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by abnormal cell growth that begins in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissue of an organ caused by the alternation of cell DNA with unknown nature.

Under normal circumstances, cell growth is a natural process that happens daily to replace millions of dead cells. In some cases, acceleration of cell growth is necessary to prevent further damage to the body organ, such as cuts, injure, etc., but after fulfilling their purposes, the growth of cells is back to a normal rate again regulated growth inhibitors.

In other words, healthy cell division is limited to a number of cycles. Compared to normal cells, cells with alternation of DNA or cancer cells can grow indefinitely.

Unfortunately, skin cells sometimes overgrow while healing, leading to scars on the skin.

At the early, most people with cancer are asymptomatic, however, at the latter, due to the size and the tumor, patients may experience general cancer symptoms such as unintended weight loss, fatigue, gastrointestinal discomfort and loss of appetite, and localized symptoms such as severe pain and bleeding.

Cancer can be classified by the types of cells that have become malignant.
* Carcinoma
Carcinoma is a malignant tumor found in anywhere of the epithelial tissues lining the cavities, surfaces of structures, and glands.

* Sarcoma
Sarcoma is a type of cancer that arises from malignantly connective tissue cells originating from embryonic germ cells or bone, cartilage, and fat tissues and cells.

* Lymphoma and leukemia
Hematopoietic cells are multipotent stem cells that give rise to all types of blood cell, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets that become cancerous.

* Germ cell tumor
Cancer is derived from pluripotent cells. In adults, these are most often found in the testicle and ovary but are more common in babies and young children.

* Blastoma
Blastoma is cancer derived from immature "precursor" or embryonic tissue, mostly in children.

The causes of cancer are not identified. However, the most prevalent factors associated with the cancer onset include age, family history, long-term exposure to certain cancer-induced chemicals, use of tobacco, and excessive alcohol drinking,..... the list goes on and on, depending on the types of cancer.

Some researchers suggested that the most common risk factor that causes cancer in the Western world may be associated with widespread obesity.

Dr. Karen Basen-Engquist, in the evaluation of the obesity risk of cancer, said, "In the United States, approximately 85,000 new cancer cases per year are related to obesity. Recent research has found that as the body mass index increases by 5 kg/m2, cancer mortality increases by 10%".And, "High priorities for future research involve additional work on the underlying mechanisms, and trials to examine the effect of lifestyle behavior change and weight loss interventions on cancer and intermediate biomarkers".

The findings strongly indicated the risk of cancer is increased substantially in obese.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of invasive tumors, researchers examined the potential effects of cranberry on cancer prevention and treatment.

According to the review of the medical literature by searching the database of PubMed, cranberry and/or its components may act as chemopreventive agents, that diminish the parameters associated with the onset of cancer, including the inhibition of cells oxidation and inflammatory-related processes, in vitro.

Cell proliferation and angiogenesis and metastasis involved in cancer cell invasion were also attenuated by the administration of cranberry's apoptotic activity.

Dr. Mantzorou M, the lead scientist, after taking other factors into account wrote, " Cranberry could be considered as a conglomeration of potential effective anticancer drug-like compounds".

Additionally, in chemical constituents analysis, cranberry showed an inhibitory action against cancers of the esophagus, stomach, colon, bladder, prostate, glioblastoma and lymphoma.

The efficacy of anti-cancer activity was attributed to the chemical compounds working synergistically to result in cellular death induction via apoptosis, necrosis, and autophagy, reduction of cellular proliferation, the elevation of reactive oxygen species, and modification of cytokine and signal transduction pathways, similar to those of aforementioned study.

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #RedCabbage's Anthocyanins Process Anti-Bacteria and Fungal Infection, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Infectious diseases are medical conditions caused by pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungi. Most cases of infectious diseases are contagious by spreading directly or indirectly, from one person to another.

In other words, if you kiss, or are coughed or sneezed on by an infectious person, you are at risk of developing the same infectious disease.

According to the statistic provided by the World Health Organization, 3 infectious diseases were ranked in the top ten causes of death worldwide in 2016.

More precisely, lower respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, and tuberculosis induced 3.0 million, 1.4 million, and 1.3 million deaths, respectively.

Conventionally, most cases of infectious diseases except those caused by viruses are treated with antibiotics.

Bacteria is a type of biological cell consisting of a single cell with a simple internal structure.

The most common diseases caused by bacteria include strep throat, urinary tract infections, and tuberculosis.

Infection occurs when the bacteria successfully invade the body and start to multiply. Most cases of infectious diseases caused by bacteria are treated with antibiotics.

And, most cases of infectious disease are transmitted by airborne you can get sick if you breathe into the air that carries infectious bacteria in air particles, vector-borne if you are stunk by the insect that the bacteria, and vehicle-borne if you are eating food or carrying the materials contaminated by the bacteria.

Most cases of bacterial invasion are met with the first line of immune white blood cells. In the active division of bacteria in the acute phase of infection, the immune system response activated the production of the proinflammatory cytokine to the site of infection with an aim to kill off all bacteria.

However, if the immune fails to kill off all the bacteria within the 3 - 8 weeks period, it then will adapt to the change, leading to chronic inflammatory and infectious diseases.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

To find a natural whole food for the prevention of infectious disease, researchers examined the B. oleracea L (red cabbage) anti-microbial activity.

In 22 pathogenic bacteria and fungi, B. oleracea L (red cabbage) demonstrated antibacterial (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli O157: H7, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumonia, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium) and antifungal (Trichophyton rubrum and Aspergillus terreus) activities at a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and the minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC), respectively.

In Chemical analysis, the potent antimicrobial action from B. oleracea L (red cabbage) was attributed to the rich source of phenolic compounds, anthocyanins.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "This extract is potentially novel for future antimicrobials, inexpensive, and readily available at a large scale for pharmaceutical companies for further investigation and processing".

Taken together, red cabbage may be considered a natural antibiotic, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Cranberry Proanthocyanidin (cPAC) Potentiates Antibiotics and Mitigates the Development of Resistance of Bacteria, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Antibiotics are a group of conventional medicines used for the treatment of bacterial, fungal parasitic,... infections.

The medications have no effects on viral infection.

Infection is a disease caused by microorganism invasion.

After entering the body, the organisms selectively find a specific tissue or organ to start their multiplication.

Most infectious diseases can be passed from infected person to person or transmitted by bites from insects or animals.

However, acquired infectious diseases can also be caused by ingesting contaminated food or water or being exposed to organisms in the environment.

Most organisms before having a chance to induce infection are killed off by the immune system response in the acute phase of infection, by stimulating the production of a proinflammatory cytokine.

Unfortunately, if the immune system fails to destroy the invasive organism within a set period of time, normally in a few weeks, it will adapt to the change, causing chronic infection.

Antibiotics have been found to cause digestive discomforts such as nausea, and indigestion. vomiting, diarrhea, and bloating. the feeling of fullness, loss of appetite, and stomach cramping or pain, acutely.

Chronic use of antibiotics also induces more serious adverse effects, including skin rash, skin allergic reactions, upset stomach, and fungal (yeast) vaginal infections or oral thrush by weakening the immune system.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of infectious diseases, researchers investigated the antibacterial activity of cranberry proanthocyanidin (cPAC) on resistance to tetracycline in Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

According to the tested assays, cPAC exerted a potentiating effect, both in vitro and in vivo, on a broad range of antibiotic classes against pathogenic E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, and P. aeruginosa.

cPAC demonstrated the antibacterial effect through two antibiotic resistance mechanisms, namely, selective membrane permeability, and multidrug efflux pumps.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, " The use of cPAC to potentiate antibiotics and mitigate the development of resistance could improve treatment outcomes and help combat the growing threat of antibiotic resistance".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered an adjunct therapy as an antibiotic against bacterial pathogens, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#CranberryExtracts Process Anti Bacterial Properties Against Infection, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Infection is a condition caused by a harmful microbial invasion of the body's tissues
Most cases of bacterial infection are treated with antibiotics. However, bacterias are very adaptable, and overuse of antibiotics has been found to make them resistant to antibiotics.

Out of trillions of strains of bacteria in the world, only a few cause diseases in humans. Believe it or not, our gut contains trillion microorganisms, most of which are bacteria.

The most common symptoms of bacterial infection are redness and heat, swelling, fever, and pain at the site of infection.

In severe cases, the patient may also experience symptoms of swollen lymph glands.

Most cases of bacterial infection are treated successfully if the types of bacteria that cause the infection are identified.

There are many risk factors associated with the onset of bacterial infection, people with severe chronic disease may increase the prevalence of bacterial infection, particularly in those with cirrhosis.

Dr. Deschênes M, the lead scientist at the Université de Montréal wrote, "Bacterial infection is a frequent and severe complication of cirrhosis. Cirrhotic patients admitted for gastrointestinal bleeding are at high risk of such a complication and have been targeted in trials of antibiotic prophylaxis".

And, " patients with severe cirrhosis who are admitted for gastrointestinal bleeding have a higher risk of developing a bacterial infection during their hospitalization than other cirrhotic patients".

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of bacterial infection, researchers examined the effect of cranberry antibacterial activity against uropathogenic strains of Escherichia coli (UPEC).

According to the tested analysis, the whole extract showed a powerful antibacterial activity against UPEC compared to the selected fractions that presented a different behavior.

Myricetin and quercitrin demonstrated the highest decrease in E. coli biofilm formation compared with the control and other fractions.

However, other chemical constituents such as dihydro ferulic acid glucuronide, procyanidin A dimer, quercetin glucoside, myricetin, and prodelphinidin B led to a significant decrease of the surface hydrophobicity compared with the control.

In other words, all fractions in the cranberry extract worked synergistically to protect the host against the infection caused by E. coli

Based on the results, researchers said, "Apart from proanthocyanidins, other compounds, mainly flavonoids, can act against E. coli biofilm formation and also modify UPEC surface hydrophobicity in vitro."

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infection, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Lycopene-loaded Whey Protein Isolate Nanoparticles (LYC-WPI-NPs) Inhibits #Cancers by Cytotoxicity, and Anti-Proliferation, According to Researchers

Kyle J. Norton

Cancers are a class of diseases caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue or organ in the body.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, in 2017, over 200,000 new cases of cancer were diagnosed and 80,800 patients died from the disease in the same year.

Lung, colorectal, breast, and prostate cancer accounted for about half of all cancer diagnoses and deaths.
Believe it or not, 1 in 2 Canadian adults will develop cancer in their lifetimes and 1 in 4 will die of the disease.

At the early stage, patients with cancer may not experience any symptoms due to the very small size of the tumor and the cancer is still on the surface in the inner lining tissues. However, at the late stage after colonizing the complete organ, cancer cells not can travel a distance away from the originated site to affect other healthy tissue and organ, they can also cause some related and specific symptoms accompanied by general symptoms associated with other types of cancer.

Cancer is classified by the followings* Size of the cancer

* Invasive or not

* Whether cancer has spread to the lymph nodes

* Whether cancer has spread to distant parts or organs of the body.

There are 4 stages of breast cancer in TNM rating (where T is referred for tumor size, N is referred for Lymph Node status, and M is referred for invasive or not)

Where
# T: Tumor Size is divided into four classes: T-1 is between 0 - 2 cms, T-2 is between 2 - 5 cms, T-3 is > 5cms, and T-4 is a tumor of any size growing into the chest wall or skin, including inflammatory breast cancer.
#N: No swollen nodes: N-0, some swelling but negative node (not cancerous): N-1a, swelling nodes and positive node (cancerous): N-1b, quite swollen and bunched together: N-2, quite swollen and near the collarbone: N-3.
# M: if no cancer cell is found: M-0, cancer cells found: M-1.

The stages of cancer are
* Stage 1T-1 tumor and clear lymph nodes with no evidence of spreading (M-0), or T-1N-0M-0.
* Stage 2
Stage 2 is the combination of a combination of T-1, T-2, or T-3 tumor, N-0. N-1a and N-1b but no spreading (M-0)
* Stage 3
Stage 3 is the combination of all T or N but no spreading (M-0)
* Stage 4
Stage 4 is the combination of T, N-1a, N-1b, N-2, N-3, and M-1

Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

In the urgency to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of cancer with little or no side effect, researchers examined the effect of a novel strategy of formulating the lycopene-loaded whey protein isolate nanoparticles (LYC-WPI-NPs) ability for adenosine deaminase inhibition of the regression of the tumor with the percent lycopene entrapment in the range to 50 and 65%.

In the chemical release analysis, LYC-WPI-NPs enhanced the oral bioavailability of lycopene by controlling its release through the absorption in the lymphatic pathways.

According to the MTT-based colorimetric assay, LYC-WPI-NPs exerted significant cytotoxicity against MCF-7 breast cancer cells in vitro.

In an animal model-induced breast cancer, LYC-WPI-NPsd also demonstrated its prophylactic anticancer efficacy without causing the death of normal cells.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final paper, "Conclusively, it may quite reasonable that lycopene loaded protein nanoparticles are competent to improve the biopharmaceutical attributes of lycopene and demonstrated prophylactic anticancer activity, decrease tumor proliferation and increase the survival rate of treated animals".

In other words, LYC-WPI-NPs significantly enhanced the lycopene anti-cancer biopharmaceutic activity compared to oral administration as seen in an animal model.

Taken altogether, tomatoes may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Peptide Fractions Found in Potatoes Exerts a Strong Antioxidant and Anti Inflammatory Activities, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.

In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radicals before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating oxidative stress that causes damage to proteins, lipids, and cell DNA.

Oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance in the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.

Due to their nature to become stable, free radicals readily donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Overexpression of free radicals is known to cause damage in contributing to the etiology of many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, cataracts, and cancer.
Antioxidants, on the other hand, are stable molecules with a unique function in the inhibition of oxidation.

Antioxidants can either be produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

However, in people with a weakened immune system, intake of dietary sources of antioxidants may be necessary.

There are 3 main types of antioxidants found in nature, including antioxidant enzymes produced by the host, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and catalases, antioxidants vitamins, that may be injected from dietary sources such as fruits and vegetables, including vitamins A, C, D, and E and antioxidant-phytochemicals found in the plant including second metabolites.

Potato is the genus Solanum and belongs to the family Solanaceae. It is a good source of protein and according to the statistic, the annual diet of an average global citizen is about 33 kg (72.6 Lbs) of potato. The root veggie now is growing worldwide in a suitable climate for commercial profits and health benefits, thus its consumption is extremely variable and rapidly changing.

In finding a potential plant for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the peptide fractions isolated from potatoes on intestinal epithelial cells (IEC-6) under oxidative and inflammatory conditions.

Based on the results of differentiation,
* Peptide fractions demonstrated a significant inhibit the pro-inflammatory protein expression such as tumor necrosis factor-α and cycloxygenase-2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase.

* More importantly, the tested peptides also showed significant antioxidant activity by reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) release induced by mitochondria, and nitrotyrosine formation

* Furthermore, the applications also increase the antioxidant response by heme oxygenase-1 and superoxide dismutase expression.

Additionally, the peptide fractions were able to significantly increase wound repair in IEC-6 induced by oxidative-inflammatory damage.

Collectively, researchers said, "The obtained results indicate the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential of dehydrated potatoes at the intestinal level".

Taken together, potatoes may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Dietary Lycopene and Lycopene #Supplementation Inhibit the Onset of Dyslipidemia in Clincal Trials

Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atoms that inhibit the oxidation caused by reactive oxygen species.
Antioxidants also play a critical role in the prevention of the oxidative stress induced by a chain of reactions as a result of over-expression of free radicals that can only be stopped with the expression of antioxidants produced by the host or from dietary sources.

More precisely, oxidative stress is caused by the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants.

Epidemiologically, over time, oxidative stress induces damage to protein, lipid, and cell DNA that leads to the incidences of chronic disease, including heart disease, RA, and cancers.

In cancer, antioxidants are molecules that process the capability to protect healthy cells against oxidative stress-induced DNA alternation.

In cardiovascular disease, antioxidants reduce the fragility and “permeability” in capillaries and prevent the clotting up of arteries due to oxidation.

In RA, antioxidant inhibits the rheumatoid joint fluid containing significant amounts of hydroxyl radical.

The overexpression of free radicals is bad. However, free radicals generated from cell metabolism may play a critical role in the synthesis of the energy of essential molecules and boosting the immune system. According to the free radical theory, over time, the damage inflicted by reactive oxygen species (ROS), can also induce skin aging.

In a healthy individual, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body are more than enough to accounter the expression of free radicals occurred in our body every day.

However, in people with a weakened immune system such as the elderly, the intake of dietary antioxidants such as supplements or fruits rich with antioxidants may be the only option to improve levels of antioxidants in the body.

Dyslipidemia is a condition with an abnormally high amount of lipids (e.g. triglycerides, cholesterol, and/or fat phospholipids) in the blood.

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

In finding a potential ingredient for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the effects of lycopene on vascular oxidative stress and inflammation in a young healthy subject.

The study included blood collection of 18 men and 9 women with restriction of lycopene-containing foods for 1 week (LYr), after a fasting state, and 3 h after an HFm and a low-fat meal (LFm).

Compared to the blood sample collected on pre-and post-meals following 1-wk of 80 mg/day lycopene supplementation (LYs) under continued dietary LYr in the fasting state, researchers found that
* LYs compared with LYr not only evoked a >2-fold increase in plasma lycopene but also increased plasma beta-carotene and alpha-tocopherol.

* However, LYs did not affect plasma nitrate/nitrite, a biomarker of nitric oxide, malondialdehyde, a biomarker of lipid oxidative stress, vascular- and intercellular-adhesion molecules or C-reactive protein, the biomarkers of inflammation.

In other words, the HFm-induced dyslipidemic state was inhibited by LYr or LYs but did not affect the plasma malondialdehyde, C-reactive protein, or adhesion molecules.

The results suggested that 1-wk of LYs increased plasma lycopene, beta-carotene, and alpha-tocopherol do not have an effect on the plasma lipid-soluble antioxidant pool, biomarkers of vascular oxidative stress and inflammation in the fasted state as well as during dyslipidemia induced by an HFm in young healthy subjects.

In other words, plasma lycopene consumption inhibits dyslipidemia but does not affect the changes of parameters induced by an HFm in young healthy subjects in the short term.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
