#Herbal #Fennel #EssentialOil Protects Cell DNA Integrity by Inducing Apoptosis and Cytotoxicity in #BreastCancer, Studies Show

Kyle J. Norton

Fennel may have a potential and therapeutic effect in reducing the risk and treatment of breast cancer, some scientists suggested.
Breast cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the breast tissue. At the later stage, cancerous cells may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean, used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

In the evaluation of the essential oil extracted from fennel activity in human breast cancer cell line (MDA-Mb), researchers found that application of fennel extract exerted a significant effect in inhibition of the expression of cancer cell line at a dose of lower than flower than 10 μg/mL with IC50.

According to the University of Malaya in the investigation of the DNA protecting activity and inhibition of nicotine-induced cancer cell migration of 9 species, fennel exerted a potential effect in the protection of the DNA integrity and inhibition of nicotine-induced cancer cell migration against Murine fibroblasts (3T3-L1) and human breast cancer (MCF-7) cells pre-treated with spice extracts and then exposed to H₂O₂ and nicotine.

Additional analysis suggested that the result of inhibition was attributed to fennel antioxidants of phenols and flavonoids in ameliorated H2O2 in initiated chain activity in the induction of cytotoxicity in altered DNA of the experiment cell line.

Some researchers suggested that the overproduction of hydrogen peroxide may serve as a prodrug in the presence of transition metal ions, in the induced production of highly reactive hydroxyl radicals to initiate DNA damage in precipitated apoptosis.

In other words, the application of highly oxidative hydrogen peroxide in the breast cancer cell line may cause a significant cytotoxic effect in cancer cell death.

These results demonstrated the correlation of the increase of apoptosis with the rise in the generation of reactive oxygen species in cancer cells.

Due to this potential activity, some researchers suggested that hydrogen peroxide overproduced in tumor cells can serve as a prodrug for the treatment of cancer.

On the other hand, the application of H2O2 in healthy cells may induce DNA damage in the initiation of cancer cell development.

Furthermore, fennel scored a statistically significant DNA protecting activity in comparison to other spices, such as ginger with 50 μg/ml in reduced 68% of DNA damage in 3T3-L1 cells.

However, Fennel exerted a lesser effect in inhibiting cancer MCF-7 cells with nicotine-induced cell migration in comparison to other spices such as pepper, long pepper, and ginger.

The above differentiation was supported by the joint study led by the Avicenna Tajik State Medical University, in the evaluation of the antioxidant effect of the essential oil of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) against MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma).
According to the result from Gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis, fennel displayed a moderated antioxidant in precipitated cytotoxic activity against MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma) with IC50 values between 30-210 mg L-1 in comparison to cytotoxic reference compounds.
In fact, the efficacy of fennel essential oil in inhibiting breast cancer proliferation and migration was attributed to the presence of lipophilic secondary metabolites and anise aldehyde, which have the potential in elevated interference with molecular targets in cells by fennel antioxidant compounds such as anethole.

Taken together, fennel and its bioactive compound may be considered functional foods in reduced risk, progression, and treatment of breast cancer. However, intake of fennel supplements should be taken with extreme care in preventing liver acute toxicity.

# Ligustilide (LIG) Found in #Herbal #Angelica Exerts Antioxidant and Antiinflammatory Effects on #Osteoporosis, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Osteoporosis is a condition of thinning of bone and bone tissues as a result of the loss of bone density over a long period of time.
The condition is a widespread degenerative disease of skeletal joints and is often associated with senescence invertebrates due to excessive or abnormal mechanical loading of weight-bearing joints, arising from heavy long-term use or specific injuries and is considered a major health problem in both elderly men and women.

Scientists as of today do not know the exact causes of osteoporosis. However, they do know that certain factors are associated with the onset and progression of the disease.

Osteoporosis is a common disease among the elderly, probably due to the aging effect that induces nutrition deficiency such as
* Vitamin D insufficiency and reduced calcium absorption,

* Reduced hormone production, the drop of estrogen levels after menopause, can speed up bone loss.

* Reduced production of bone mass and increased bone reabsorption due to the balance shifts in favor of osteoclasts compared to those of osteoblasts.

Osteoclastogenesis is a procedure that included many stages, that interfere with the specific stage of the process, diseases associated with imbalanced osteoclasts, and osteoblasts that may be preventable in the future.

The osteoclast is a type of cell differentiated from another type of cell called a macrophage that breaks down the bone which leads to bone resorption.

In other words, in osteoporotic patients, bone resorption is far more exceedingly to bone formation.

Furthermore, the imbalance of osteoclasts and osteoblasts also is found in patients with Paget's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, osteopetrosis, periodontal disease, and bone cancer metastases.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China. The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen the heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the improvement of bone mineral density, researchers examined the phytochemical Ligustilide (LIG), the main component of A. sinensis anti-osteoporotic effects.

According to the tested analysis, LIG significantly ameliorated the inhibition of bone formation in zebrafish caused by prednisolone.

Furthermore, the application also showed a strongly promoted osteoblast differentiation, including that of the pre-osteoblastic cell line MC3T3-E1 and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells by reducing the oxidative stress to induce cell apoptosis by free radical H2O2 and enhancing the protein (Bcl-2) associated with anti-apoptotic functioning

The promotion of bone density of LIG was also found to induce the metabolic reaction of EGFR and ERK1/2 associated with instructions for making a receptor protein involved in bone formation by blocking the GPR30 signaling to induce bone mass increase.

Collectively, researchers said, "the results reveal that GPR30 is a positive switch for LIG to increase bone formation via regulation of EGFR, and these results provide evidence for the potential of LIG to treat osteoporosis".

Taken altogether, Herbal Angelica consists of LIG. maybe considered a functional herbal medicine for reducing the risk of osteoporosis, pending a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Omega3 Fatty Acids Inversely Are Associated with #Depression, #BoneResorption and #Cancer-Related Complications, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases associated with the growth of cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.

Cancers at this stage also can travel a distance away from the original site to induce secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.
The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.

Compared to all cancers, lung, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers are the most common cancer in the US.

The most common cancer complications, depending on the type of cancer are
* Pain can be caused by cancer or by cancer treatment
* Fatigue.
* Difficulty breathing.
*Nausea.
*Diarrhea or constipation.
* Weight loss.
*Chemical changes in your body.
* Brain and nervous system problems.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the improvement of quality of life in cancer patients, researchers examined the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) effects on cancer complications
According to the medical literature* A systematic review demonstrated that a nutritional supplement enriched with fish oil decreased the symptoms of fatigue and pain in patients during chemo- and/or radiotherapy, probably due to reduced inflammatory status.

* A recent systematic review evaluated the effects of fish oil for cachexia in advanced cancer, concluding that clinical evidence is still uncertain due to a weak methodology and a large variation of fish oil dosages. However, fish oil supplementation could benefit postoperative recovery and reduce complications, such as impaired wound healing and infections.

* The plasmatic contents of omega-6/omega-3 and ALA/EPA were associated with muscle atrophy in cachectic cancer patients, indicating that these molecules may participate in the development of cancer cachexia.

* Regarding the participation of omega-3 in cancer-associated depression, it was observed that, in newly diagnosed Japanese lung cancer patients, the ALA and total omega-3 consumption was inversely associated with the development of depression.

* The application of omega-3 supplementation could be beneficial for hypercalcemia-associated bone resorption because it was observed that, in an animal model of apical periodontitis, omega-3 supplementation reduced bone resorption by the downregulation of the inflammatory cells influx.

Taken together, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the treatment of cancer-related complications, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Lycopene Inhibits the Onset of Acute Pancreatitis through Its Antioxidant and Anti-Oxidativestress Activities, According to Researchers

Kyle J. Norton

Pancreatitis is a condition associated with the inflammation of the pancreas.
Most cases of pancreatitis are involved in the abnormal activation of digestive enzymes in the small intestine that attacks the pancreas.

According to the statistics, in the Western world, the incidence of chronic pancreatitis rate is 5-12/100,000.

Epidemiologically, the chronic condition is found mostly in patients between the ages of 30 and 40 and is more common in men than women.

Acute pancreatitis is an inflammation that starts rapidly and lasts for a short time. The condition can be mild or severe. In mild cases, most patients are recovered quickly if the cause is found.

In severe cases, acute pancreatitis can be life-threatening. The condition has been found to induce bleeding into the gland, serious tissue damage, infection, and cyst formation.

In some patients, the condition also can cause damage to vital organs such as the heart, lungs, and kidney

The most common symptoms of acute pancreatitis are upper abdominal pain, swollen and tender abdomen, nausea and vomiting, fever, and increased heart rate.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms that persistently with no signs of healing. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of acute pancreatitis.

The exact causes of acute pancreatitis are unknown. The most common factors associated with the prevalent risk of acute pancreatitis are gallstones or heavy alcohol use.

Dr. Parimal Chowdhury, the lead scientist wrote, "Use of alcohol is a worldwide habit regardless of socio-economic background. Heavy alcohol consumption is a potential risk factor for induction of pancreatitis".

And, "The current review cites the updated literature on the alcohol metabolism, its effects on gastrointestinal and pancreatic function and in causing pancreatic injury, genetic predisposition of alcohol-induced pancreatitis".

Other risk factors found in patients with acute pancreatitis are long-term use of some medications such as Azathioprine, Thiazide, and Valproic acid, autoimmune disease, infections, trauma, metabolic disorders, and surgery.

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomatoes in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of pancreatic disease, researchers examined the anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects of lycopene on severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) in both in vivo and in vitro models.

According to the tested differentiation, lycopene administration protected against SAP by decreasing the levels of serum amylase and C-reactive protein associated with the inflammatory pancreas.

Lycopene also inhibited the overexpression of pro-inflammatory proteins such as The serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, and macrophage inflammatory protein-1α.

Free radicals overexpression such as lipid peroxidase and antioxidant enzyme production such as myeloperoxidase and superoxide dismutase associated with oxidative stress was also modulated by the injection of lycopene against acinar cells in the pancreas against cell apoptosis.

In other words, lycopene protected the pancreas against the onset of acute pancreatitis in a simulated SAP model in a rat acinar cell line by inhibiting ROS.induction.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Lycopene exerts protective effects against SAP in rats that may be related to its anti-inflammatory property through inhibiting the expression of damage-associated molecular patterns, and anti-oxidative property".

Taken together, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of acute pancreatitis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) In #Omega 3 Fatty Acids Induces #WeightLoss in #Obese with Type 2 #Diabetes, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Today, the prevalence of extremely overweight and obese children caused by an unhealthy diet and lifestyle change over 2 decades of economic prosperity, in the Southeast Asian population has raised concerns of the scientific community.

Overweight and obesity have reached epidemic proportions in many countries, affecting even younger age populations inducing an economic burden in the healthcare system for treatment of obesity-related disorders such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases(1).

Obesity is a chronic and medical condition caused by excess body fat accumulated to some extent that impacts personal health. The hallmark of obesity is attenuated metabolism and structural cell changes in the obese fat observed by reducing metabolic activity.

Visceral fat is a layer of fat that surrounds the organs. Overexpression of visceral fat has been found to promote insulin resistance, diabetes, heart disease, and inflammation.

In obese, accumulation of visceral fat is predominant in the intra-abdominal cavity.

According to the BMI index, a person is considered overweight, if he/she has a BMI between 25 to 29.9 kg/m2. A BMI of 30 kg/m2 or more is an indication of obesity.

Weight loss is a process that intentionally reduces the total body mass, through the decrease of fluid, body fat or adipose tissue or lean mass.

Due to the widespread obesity in North America (over 68% of the US population is either overweight or obese), many weight loss products were created by manufacturers.

Weight loss products are a 66 billion business in the US, according to the statistic provided by the Marketdata LLC research firm. And the business continues to grow at a rapid rate.

Are the weight loss products work? I don't think so. Otherwise, the percentage of the overweight population in the US should be decreased substantially.

In other words, all weight loss products may have a complex structure or a long-term commitment before the results can be seen.

In finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases associated with obesity, researchers examined the relationship between levels of serum eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), arachidonic acid (AA), as well as EPA/AA ratio and weight loss during hospitalization in participants considered to be overweight, with type 2 diabetes.

The study included 142 patients who were hospitalized for treatment of type 2 diabetes divided into two groups depending on the achievement in the reduction of body weight by 3% or more during hospitalization.

According to the tested analysis,
* After the adjustment was made for several confounders, the hazard ratio of effective weight loss for logarithmical serum EPA was 1.59 (95% CI 1.02-2.49, P = 0.04) and for logarithmical EPA/AA ratio 1.64 (1.03-2.61, P = 0.04), whereas the hazard ratio for effective weight loss for logarithmical serum AA was 1.11 (0.45-2.78, P = 0.82).

* Furthermore, after dividing EPA/AA ratio and serum EPA into quartiles based on participant number, the hazard ratio for the highest quartile of EPA/AA ratio was 2.33 for the highest quartile of serum EPA 1.60 (0.80-3.19, P = 0.18) compared with the lowest quartile.

More precisely, EPA is involved in body weight change under a caloric-restriction regimen.

In other words, a high serum level of EPA, relative to the level of AA, can lead to a reduction of adipose tissue weight through the anti-inflammatory effects of EPA.

Based on the finding, researchers said, " EPA/AA ratio was found to be a better predictor of medical intervention for weight loss among overweight patients with type 2 diabetes, compared with serum EPA level".

Taken together, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for inducing weight loss, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Lycopene Reduces the Number of Total Leukocyte Counts and improves Patients with PulmonaryEmphysema, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

The lung-formed part of the circulatory system plays an essential and unique role in taking oxygen to the blood and exhaling carbon dioxide from the blood.

In other words, any diseases involved in breathing problems that reduce the function of the lung are pulmonary diseases.

Lung diseases are a group of medical conditions that cause the reduced function of the lung inhaling oxygen to the blood and exhaling carbon dioxide from the blood.

Pulmonary diseases are a class of diseases associated with the lungs, including asthma, COPD, influenza, pneumonia and tuberculosis, and lung cancer.

In other words, any diseases involved in breathing problems that reduce the function of the lung are pulmonary diseases.

The most common pulmonary diseases are asthma, a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The disease affects people of all ages, and mostly starts during childhood; pneumothorax, a condition of collection of air within the pleural cavity, from either the outside or from the lung, and bronchitis is a condition of an inflammation of the mucous membranes of the bronchi, the larger and medium-sized airways that carry airflow from the trachea into the lung parenchyma.

Emphysema is a type of COPD with a long-term and progressive condition that causes shortness of breath, depending on the stage of lung function associated with the damage of tissues of the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs.

Most common causes of pulmonary emphysema, are smoking, exposure to air pollution, such as chemical fumes, dust, and other substances, and irritating fumes and dust at work.

Dr. Stephen I. Rennard, the lead scientist wrote, "Emphysema is characterized by enlargement of alveolar spaces together with destruction of alveolar walls in the absence of obvious fibrosis (1). Far and away, the most common cause of pulmonary emphysema is cigarette smoking".

And, "Cigarette smoke causes an inflammatory response in the lower respiratory tract characterized by the accumulation of pigment-laden alveolar macrophages together with the recruitment of smaller numbers of neutrophils (1, 2)".

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of colitis researchers examined the effects of lycopene on antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties on emphysema.

Mice selected for the study were treated with two different doses of lycopene (25 or 50 mg/kg/day, diluted in sunflower oil by orogastric gavage before exposing to 60 days of CS or not (CG).

According to the tested analysis, lycopene not only promoted a reduction in the number of total leukocyte counts and improved patients with pulmonary emphysema.

Furthermore, lycopene promotes the balanced ratio of free radical and antioxidant enzymes by decreasing lipid peroxidation and DNA damage and increasing the activities of SOD, CAT, and GSH content.

Levels of TNF-α, IFN-γ, and IL-10. which were elevated by the injection of CS and were also decreased by the application of lycopene.

Additionally, the decrease in myeloperoxidase activity and nitrite content. associated with overexpression of free radicals induced inflammation was also inhibited by the lycopene.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Our data elucidated the role of lycopene as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent in mice exposed to CS".

Taken together, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of pulmonary emphysema, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

6-Hydroxy-1-Methylindole-3-Acetonitrile (6-HMA) Found in #Brassicarapa Inhibits Nephrotoxicity by Suppressing Parameters Associated with Oxidativestress, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Kidneys are 2 bean-shaped organs found on the left and right side of the retroperitoneal space in the body.
The function of the kidneys is to filter blood and control fluids. They are the second detoxed organs besides the liver and skin.

Due to millions of tiny filters called nephrons in each kidney, people may not experience any kidney dysfunction symptoms at an early stage.

Kidney diseases are a class of medical conditions associated with reduced function of the kidney, in cases, complete loss of kidney function such as kidney failure.

Believe it or not, in the US, the leading causes of kidney failure and the end stage of chronic kidney diseases are diabetes and high blood pressure.

Nephrotoxicity or acute kidney failure is a condition of toxicity in the kidneys.

The disease is caused by the poisonous effect of prolonged use of certain medications and the accumulation of harmful chemicals.

According to the American physician association, long-term use of penicillins, cephalosporins, sulfonamides, thiazide diuretics, furosemide, NSAIDs, and rifampicin are associated to increase damage to the kidney.

And people with age over 60 are at increased risk of nephrotoxicity if the above medicines are prescribed for prolonged periods.

Oxidative nephrotoxicity is a condition of kidney damage caused by overexpression of free radicals compared to levels of antioxidants.

Dr. Keiko Hosohata in the examination "Role of Oxidative Stress in Drug-Induced Kidney Injury",
Said, "Because the kidney is exposed to a larger proportion and higher concentration of drugs and toxins than other organs through the secretion of ionic drugs by tubular organic ion transporters across the luminal membranes of renal tubular epithelial cells, and through the reabsorption of filtered toxins into the lumen of the tubule, these cells are at greater risk for injury".

And "In fact, drug-induced kidney injury is a serious problem in clinical practice and accounts for roughly 20% of cases of acute kidney injury (AKI) among hospitalized patients".

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of kidney diseases, researchers examined the nephroprotective effects of 6-hydroxy-1-methylindole-3-acetonitrile (6-HMA), which was isolated from the roots of B. rapa, on cisplatin-induced toxicity in renal epithelial LLC-PK1 cells and in rats with acute renal injury

The study included 16 subjects that were randomized, and fifteen subjects completed all visits.

According to the tested analysis, in vitro and Vivo
* The pretreatment of LLC-PK1 cells with 6-HMA ameliorated cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity caused by oxidative stress.

* The pretreatment also decreased the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and kidney stress marker malondialdehyde (MDA) and increased levels of glutathione (GSH).

* Furthermore, 6-HMA inhibited cisplatin-induced heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression involved in oxidation and inflammation by the binding activity of NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), the antioxidant proteins that protect against oxidative damage triggered by injury and inflammation.

* Moreover, 6-HMA administered rats showed lower levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, and urinary lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) associated with kidney damage than cisplatin alone-treated rats in the cisplatin-induced renal injury model.

* Additionally, 6-HMA inhibited the cisplatin-induced formation of MDA and GSH depletion and increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione reductase (GR).

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " these findings indicate 6-HMA is a major active constituent from the roots of B. Rapa to have a protective effect against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity by attenuating oxidative stress.".

Taken altogether, Brassica rapa processed abundantly 6-HMA may be considered supplements for the prevention of oxidative nephrotoxicity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
