Black and Common Beans Inhibit Parameters Associated with the Risk of #CardiovascularDisease(CVD), Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Black and Common beans may be considered as functional foods in attenuated risk of Cardiovascular disease, a renowned institute postulated.

Cardiovascular disease is a condition of heart attack caused by the blocking of blood in vessels as a result of the narrowing and hardening of blood vessels.

Black bean, a small roughly ovoid legumes with glossy black shells, genus Phaseolus, belongings to the family Fabaceae can be bought in most grocery stores all around the year in dried and canned forms.

It is believed that the black bean was the first domesticated growth in South America.

According to the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, individuals who eat more beans in promoted less glycaemic stress (hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia) may have a reduced risk of CVD,

The study also addressed the importance of bean efficacy on glycaemic response and the impact that relationship may have on the risk of developing diabetes and CVD.

In the Sprague-Dawley rats model and C57Bl/6 mice induced obesity by a diet, both bean diet, groups showed a significant in reduced plasma total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol without affecting HDL-cholesterol or total TAG in the short-term. And bean-fed obese mice not only induced weight loss but also improved plasma lipid profile within a 12 d time frame compared to other groups.

The weight loss and reduced levels of blood cholesterol in tested subjects provided significant information on bean function in ameliorated risk of cardiovascular disease.

Another, study of the risk of development of cardiovascular complications in patients with diabetes, suggested that the imbalance between reactive oxygen species and antioxidant systems in patients with type 2 diabetes may be the leading cause of heart complications involving high cardiac collagen content.

Therefore, increased intake of bean diet may play a prevalent role in reduced risk of CVD by increased total antioxidant activity and decreased the expression of hyperglycaemic state, catalase and superoxide dismutase activity, and tissue damage caused by lipid peroxidation.

Dr. Oliveira RJ, the lead author said, "The phaseolin treatment attenuated the collagen levels compared to non-treated diabetic rats. Thus, the short-term anti-hyperglycaemic effect of the phaseolamin treatment may prevent the initial changes caused by oxidative stress and the deposition of collagen, as well as reduce the incidence of heart complications".

Collectively, adding a bean portion to your diet daily may have a substantially reduced risk of heart disease and heart complications in diabetics, in comparison to people with a typical American diet.

#Lycopene Extracted from Tomatoes Inhibit tthe Onset of #LiverCancer Through Its Anti-Profiferation, Reserachers Say

Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath your diaphragm and above your stomach.

The liver not only plays an essential role that filters the blood from the digestive system but also produces bile to build strong cell membranes, produce vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Furthermore, the liver also aids digestive function to absorb nutrients from food intake, and protect the body against free radicals in the body through its antioxidant capacity.

Liver cancer is chronic a condition characterized by out of controlled growth of hepatocellular cells in the liver due to DNA alternation.

Since the organ is a soft tissue with less nerve, most liver cancer patients are diagnosed in the later stage of cancer.

Liver cancer remains the fifth most common malignancy in men and the eighth in women worldwide. According to the statistic, in the US, approximately, 42,030 new cases of liver cancer will be diagnosed in 2019, including 29,480 in men and 12,550 in women.

Sadly, liver cancer also will cause the death of approximately 31,780 people, including 21,600 men and 10,180 women in 2019. Believe it or not, liver cancer death rates have increased by over 2% per year since 2007

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common form of primary liver cancer.

The grade of liver cancer is depending on the tendency of spreading. Low-grade cancers usually grow more slowly and are less likely to spread while high-grade cancers indicate otherwise.

Out of many risks associated with the onset of liver cancer, some researchers that long-term excessive alcohol drinking may be the culprit which causes the rise of liver cancer in the US.

Linda Carroll wrote on NBC news." Severe alcohol-related liver disease is on the rise, a new study suggests. Experts say the increase may be due to heavy binge drinking, especially in young adults.

And, "...while there has been little change in the rate of people developing alcoholic fatty liver disease, there appears to be an increase in those who are at greater risk of cirrhosis, liver cancer, and death, according to the study published in JAMA"

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

In finding a potential compound for the prevention of liver cancer, researchers examined the effects of lycopene extracted from tomatoes (LycT) on N-Nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA)-induced hepatocarcinogenesis.

In a study of female BALB/c mice randomly divided into four groups, the Control, NDEA (200 mg NDEA/kg b.w. given i.p.), LycT (5 mg/kg b.w. given orally on alternate days), and LycT + NDEA group, researchers found that* Lycopene treatment inhibited the uncontrolled proliferation in the liver of NDEA associated with the high expression of cell-proliferation (P ≤ 0.001) in NDEA mice observed by the increased expression of genes (PCNA, Cyclin D1, and p21) associated with tumorigenesis compared to control.

* Furthermore, elevated expression of parameters associated with cancer expression in NDEA mice was also inhibited by the injection of lycopene extract compared to control.

* The aforementioned parameters correlated to the alterations in hepatic ultrastructure in the NDEA group were also inhibited by the lycopene extract.

* Moreover, according to the hepatic electron micrographs, LycT + NDEA group showed also increased macrophages, apoptotic bodies and well-differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), compared to undifferentiated HCC observed in the NDEA treated group.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "This study demonstrates that dietary supplementation with LycT has a multidimensional role in preventing HCC development".

Taken together, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the prevention of liver cancer pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Isothiocyanates (ITCs) Found in #BrassicaOleracea Vegetables Process Anti-ColorectalCancer Activity, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

The colon-rectum formed as a part of the digestive system is involved in the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and breaks down certain materials in the feces into substances of which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by irregular cell growth on the body tissue, due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Colorectal cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the tissue of the colon or rectum due to the alternation of the cell's DNA.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women compared to other types of cancer.

The lifetime risk of colorectal cancer is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

Approximately, 140,000 cases of colorectal cancer were diagnosed in the US in 2018. Colorectal Cancer also causes the death of over 50, 000 people, representing 8.3% of total cancer death.

Being overweight or obese. smoking, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol drinking, the increase in age, family and personal history, and genetic preposition are some of the prevalent risks of the disease.

Overall, the lifetime risk of colorectal cancer developing is 1 in 22 (4.49%) in men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) in women.

In finding a potential whole for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effect of principal bioactive compounds, isothiocyanates (ITCs) on a colorectal cancer cell line (HT-29).

According to the chemicals analysis, purple cabbage extract showed the highest ITC concentration per gram, fresh weight, followed by black cabbage and Romanesco cauliflower.

ITC at the concentrations of 7.08 microg/mL decreased cancer cell viability by inducing the caspase-3 associated with cell death and DNA fragmentation at 48h.

Brussels sprouts showed the strongest effects on cell viability and caspase-3 activity.

Furthermore, all varieties of Brassica Oleracea with rich sources of ITCs potently inhibit the growth of colon cancer cells by inducing apoptosis.

All the extracts showed anticancer activity at ITC concentrations of between 3.54 to 7.08 mug/mL,

Based on the finding, researchers said, " ITC concentration and the chemopreventive responses of plant extracts vary among the varieties of Brassica Oleracea studied and among their cultivars".

Taken altogether, Brassica Oleracea vegetables may be considered functional foods for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Improve the Brian Activity by #Alleviating Microinfarct Burdens and Functional Deficits, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

The brain formed part of the central nervous system is the most complex organ made up of more than billions of nerve cells or neurons.

The functions of the brain are associated with the communication of trillions of connections called synapses in many specialized regions.

A neuron or nerve cell formed part of the central nervous system, made of a cell body (also called soma), dendrites, and an axon is a cell in the nervous system that carries electrical impulses.

Neurons are core components of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves that play an essential role in the process and transmit information.

Neurological diseases are the medical conditions of brain disorders. Anything that involves structural, biochemical, or electrical abnormalities in the brain, spinal cord, or other nerves, including brain damage is considered as neuro disease.

The most common neurodegenerative diseases in the elderly are dementia. Depending on the brain regions that are damaged or dysfunctional, dementia can be Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and Huntington's disease.

Genetic mutation inherited from parents such as the NOTCH3 gene is the most common autosomal dominant inherited cause of stroke and vascular dementia.

Poor lifestyle choices, such as smoking, overuse of alcohol, lack of physical activity and inadequate relief of chronic stress, and poor diet with high in saturated and trans fat, red meat, processed foods, and less in fruits and vegetables and whole-grain are some of the key contributors in the development and progression of chronic diseases, including neurological diseases.

Neuroprotection is a process to preserve the neuronal structure and/or function against the death or gradual death of neurons, including the use of medicines and herbs.

In other words, neuroprotection protects the neuronal integrity against the reduction in the rate of neuronal loss over time inducing neurological disease, including neurodegenerative disease.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

In finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of neuro-diseases, researchers examined the effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs) on alleviating microinfarct burdens and functional deficits.

According to the results of Fat-1 transgenic mice and fish oil supplements, ω-3 PUFAs showed strong protective activity against microinfarcts in a multiple diffuse microinfarcts model.

In other words, ω-3 PUFAs significantly attenuated cell apoptosis.

Furthermore, ω-3 PUFAs alleviated the diffuse microinfarct burdens and remarkably improved the functional deficits by reducing spontaneous anxiety, increasing preference for the novel object, and improving hippocampal-based learning and short-term memory.

Collectively, researchers said, "Enriched brain ω-3 PUFAs are effective for reducing microinfarct burdens and improving the function deficits, which support the clinical research and application of ω-3 PUFAs in the treatment or prophylaxis in vascular dementia".

Taken together, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a neuro-protective functional food, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Tocopherols Are Associated with Anti-#ColorectalCancer in Men, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

The colon-rectum formed as a part of the digestive system is involved in the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and broken down of certain materials in the feces into substances of which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.

Colorectal cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the tissue of the colon or rectum due to the alternation of cells' DNA.

Colorectal cancer is a relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing cancer.

The disease is also the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in developed countries, including the US and Canada.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

In finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of cancers, researchers examined the associations of serum carotenoids, retinol, and tocopherols with colorectal cancer risk.

According to the case-control study nested within the Japan Collaborative Cohort Study, including micronutrients measured in prediagnostic serum samples from 116 men and women who developed colorectal cancer during an 8-yr follow-up period and from 298 matched controls,* In men, the higher level of serum total carotenoids was associated with a decreased risk with the multivariate-adjusted odds ratio (OR) for the highest vs. the lowest tertile of 0.34.

* The increased serum retinol in all subjects and alpha-tocopherol were also associated with a decreasing risk of cancer with the ORs for the highest tertiles being 0.29 and 0.29, respectively.

* In women, the higher levels of alpha- and total carotenoids were instead related to increased risk: with the corresponding ORs of 4.72 (95% CI = 1.29-17.3), 2.00 (0.70-5.73), and 2.47 (0.73-8.34), respectively.

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a supplement for the treatment of colorectal cancer in MEN only, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#GreenPeas GP Supplementation Processes Anti #Colitis Through Its Antioxidant and Proinflammatry Properties, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) refers to a set of disorders that involve chronic inflammation of your digestive tract, including the most common types such as* Ulcerative colitis affects the innermost lining of your large intestine (colon) and rectum.

* Crohn's disease affects mostly the colon and the last part of the small intestine (ileum).

Colitis is a condition of inflammation of the large intestine, including the colon, caecum, and rectum.

There is no exact cause of colitis. Certain risk factors such as colon infection, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis), ischemic colitis, allergic reactions, and microscopic colitis have been found to increase the risk of the condition.

The most common symptoms of colitis are totally depending on the type, including abdominal pain, cramping, and diarrhea, with or without blood in the stool.

Conventionally, colitis caused by infection is treated with antibiotics. However, treatment of non-infection colitis is focusing on symptom relief, supportive care, and maintaining adequate hydration and pain control.

The most common tools used for colitis diagnosis are X-rays of the colon, testing the stool for blood and pus, sigmoidoscopy, and colonoscopy.

The statistics provided by a study from Medscape, suggested, "Internationally, the incidence of IBD is approximately 0.5-24.5 cases per 100,000 person-years for ulcerative colitis and 0.1-16 cases per 100,000 person-years for Crohn's disease. Overall, the prevalence of IBD is 396 cases per 100,000 persons annually".

Green peas are species of Pisum Sativum belongings to the family Fabaceae and native to western Asia from the Mediterranean Sea to the Himalayas Mountains. The pea is a green, pod-shaped vegetable and a cool-season crop grown in many parts of the world.

In finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of diseases associated with colonic inflammation, researchers investigated the impact of green pea (GP) supplementation on the susceptibility of high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice to dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis.

The study included 6-week-old C57BL/6J female mice induced colitis was induced by adding 2.5% DSS in drinking water for 7 days followed by a 7-day recovery period that was fed a 45% HFD or HFD supplemented with 10% GP, after 7-week dietary supplementation.

According to the tested analysis, the administration of GP supplementation ameliorated the disease activity index score in HFD-fed mice during the recovery stage and reduced neutrophil infiltration-associated immune responses.

Furthermore, the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines involved in the mRNA expression of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and inflammatory markers interleukin (IL)-6, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), IL-17, interferon-γ (IFN-γ), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in HFD-fed mice was significantly decreased by the injection of GP.

Moreover, levels of mucin 2 produced from goblet cells in the epithelial lining into the lumen of the large intestine to protect the intestinal epithelium also increased in GP mice.

Additionally, GP ameliorated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress involved in the mediation of a pro-inflammatory synergy in the colon.

Based on the results, scientists said, " GP supplementation ameliorated the severity of DSS-induced colitis in HFD-fed mice, which was associated with the suppression of inflammation, mucin depletion, and ER stress in the colon".

Taken altogether, green peas may be considered a functional food for the prevention of colitis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

The Effects of #Herbal #Angelica and TCM #Xuebijing Injection (XBJ) on Patients with #Sepsis, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Sepsis is a condition caused by chemicals released into the bloodstream to fight the infection that triggers inflammation throughout the body as a result of severe infection(a)(b). according to the study by the University of Utah, sepsis is the commonest cause of admission to medical ICUs across the world.

Mortality from sepsis continues to be high. Besides shock and multi-organ dysfunction occurring following the intense inflammatory reaction to sepsis, complications arising from sepsis-related immunoparalysis contribute to the morbidity and mortality from sepsis(c).

The most common risk factors associated with the prevalent factors of sepsis, term infants, very low birth weight (VLBW) and preterm infants, obesity, operative vaginal delivery, and age <25 years, elderly, patients in intensive care and with weakened immune system, invasive devices, and alcoholism.

Diseases associated with Sepsis are

* Staphylococcal infections
Preterm infants are especially susceptible to late-onset sepsis which is often due to Gram-positive bacterial infections resulting in substantial morbidity and mortality(24).

* Elevated central venous pressure
Elevated central venous pressure is associated with impairment of microcirculatory blood flow in sepsis(25).

* Neonatal cellulitis
There is a report of a case of late-onset neonatal invasive group A streptococcal disease characterized by rapidly progressing cellulitis and the development of sepsis(26).

* Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
There is a report on the spectrum of community-acquired S. aureus infections to compare the patients infected with methicillin-susceptible or methicillin-resistant strains among patients aged <20 years. Overall, 90 cases of community-acquired S. aureus were detected in an 11-year period(27).

* Bladder infection
Bladder bacteria is a common but unique cause of sepsis(28).

* Urinary tract infection
The study to evaluate the effectiveness of Lactobacillus GG supplementation in reducing the incidence of urinary tract infections (UTIs), bacterial sepsis, and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in preterm infants, found that seven days of Lactobacillus GG supplementation starting with first feed is not effective in reducing the incidence of UTIs, NEC, and sepsis in preterm infants. Further studies are required to confirm our results in lower birth weight populations(29).

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, scientists examined the effects of Xuebijing injection (XBJ), a Chinese patent medicine on sepsis.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen the heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the search of medical literature in Embase, PubMed, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), and the Wanfang database from inception to June 6, 2017, including relevant RCTs comparing XBJ combined with RT and RT alone for sepsis, * 1602 records and 16 RCTs (1144 patients) identified suggested that the combined therapy reduced 28-day mortality and body temperature.

* WBC count improved with combined medication at high dosages (one study included, 40/1144, MD -8.00, 95% CI -10.18 to -5.82) with no reduction at moderate dosages.

* However, moderate-quality evidence indicated positive results with low dosages.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "This study suggested that supplementation with XBJ in addition to regular treatment may improve the 28-day mortality rate, APACHE Ⅱ scores, WBC count, and body temperature of sepsis patients without serious adverse events".

Taken altogether, angelica used combined with other herbal medicines may be considered a remedy for the treatment of sepsis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
