In the investigation of phytochemicals and pomegranate extracts of the fruit of the Punica granatum (pomegranate) and their antioxidant effects found that due to the action of ellagic acid, the main polyphenol in pomegranate. In this mini review, the effects of pomegranate extracts and ellagic acid on the proliferation of prostate cancer cells and their future potential are discussed, according to "Ellagic acid, pomegranate, and prostate cancer -- a mini review" by Bell C, Hawthorne S.(a)

[2] Antiproliferative, [3]apoptotic, and [4] antioxidant activities
In the assessment of polyphenols including punicalagin, the major fruit ellagitannin, and ellagic acid (EA) of Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) fruits juice (PJ) and its antioxidant and anti-atherosclerotic activities found that Pomegranate juice showed greatest antiproliferative activity against all cell lines by inhibiting proliferation from 30% to 100%. At 100 microg/ml, PJ, EA, punicalagin, and TPT induced apoptosis in HT-29 colon cells. However, in the HCT116 colon cells, EA, punicalagin, and TPT but not PJ induced apoptosis. The trend in antioxidant activity was PJ>TPT>punicalagin>EA. The superior bioactivity of PJ compared to its purified polyphenols illustrated the multifactorial effects and chemical synergy of the action of multiple compounds compared to single purified active ingredients, according to "In vitro, antiproliferative, apoptotic and antioxidant activities of punicalagin, ellagic acid, and a total pomegranate tannin extract are enhanced in combination with other polyphenols as found in pomegranate juice" by Seeram NP, Adams LS, Henning SM, Niu Y, Zhang Y, Nair MG, Heber D.(b)

[5]. Osteoarthritis
In the evaluation of the extract of pomegranate and its effect on p38-MAPK which is a major signal-transducing pathway in osteoarthritis (OA) concluded that our results provide an important insight into the molecular basis of the reported cartilage protective and arthritis inhibitory effects of pomegranate extract. These novel pharmacological actions of PE on IL-1β stimulated human OA chondrocytes impart a new suggestion that PE or PE-derived compounds may be developed as MKK and p38-MAPK inhibitors for the treatment of OA and other degenerative/inflammatory diseases, according to "Pomegranate extract inhibits the interleukin-1β-induced activation of MKK-3, p38α-MAPK and transcription factor RUNX-2 in human osteoarthritis chondrocytes" by Rasheed Z, Akhtar N, Haqqi TM.(c)

[6]. Rheumatoid arthritis

In analyzing the Pomegranate extract (POMx) and its effect on the incidence and severity of collagen-induced arthritis in mice, found that pomegranate consumption reduced DAS28 in RA patients, and this effect could be related to the antioxidative property of pomegranates. Dietary supplementation with pomegranates may be a useful complementary strategy to attenuate clinical symptoms in RA patients, according to "Consumption of pomegranate decreases serum oxidative stress and reduces disease activity in patients with active rheumatoid arthritis: a pilot study" by Balbir-Gurman A, Fuhrman B, Braun-Moscovici Y, Markovits D, Aviram M.(d)

#Cinnamon Significantly Reduces the Severity and Duration of Pain During Menstruation and Menstrual Bleeding, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Cinnamon is a spice derived from the inner bark of a tree, native to South East Asia, of over 300 species of the genus Cinnamomum, it belongs to the family Lauraceae, use in herbal and traditional medicine as an anti-fungal and bacterial levels, to improve reproductive organ, prevent flatulence and intestinal cramping, and to treat indigestion, diarrhea, bad breath, headache, migraine, etc.

Topical use of essential oil extracted from cinnamon may be the next-generation whole herb medicine for the prevention and treatment of menstrual pain and heavy menstrual bleeding.

The results of the investigation were reported by several respectable institutes and published in the databases of numbers online medical literature, including PubMed.

According to Eulji University, the study compared the effect of aromatherapy massage and acetaminophen on menstrual pain in Korean high school girls. the cinnamon treatment group showed a significantly higher reduction in menstrual pain than the acetaminophen group.

Acetaminophen or APAP is an over-counter and popular conventional medicine used to treat pain and fever with a number of intolerant adverse effects.

In a randomized, double-blind trial, out of 114, the group received Cinnamon (capsule containing 420 mg Cinnamon, TDS, n= 38) in 24 h significantly reduced the severity and duration of pain during menstruation and menstrual bleeding.

In primary dysmenorrhea, cinnamon expressed significant over-reduction of pain, menstrual bleeding, nausea, and vomiting with primary dysmenorrhea without side effects.

Dr. Marzouk TM., the lead author at Mansoura University said, " ... aromatherapy abdominal massage once daily for seven days prior to menstruation using the essential oils (cinnamon....) is effective in alleviating menstrual pain, its duration and excessive menstrual bleeding...." and "Aromatherapy can be provided as a nonpharmacological pain relief measure and as a part of nursing care given to girls suffering of dysmenorrhea, or excessive menstrual bleeding".

Further study of the effect of cinnamon extract on symptoms of dysmenorrhea and contractility in some smooth muscles, Dr. Alotaibi M. suggested, cinnamon may be used to alleviate menstrual pain associated with dysmenorrhoea or prevent unwanted uterine activity in early pregnancy.

However, intake of cinnamon should be taken with care as toxicity was found in case of overdoses.

#Legume, a Good Glycaemic Index (GI) Process Anti-#Hypercholesterolemic Activities

Kyle J. Norton

Hypercholesterolemia is a condition characterized by abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.
The cause of hypercholesterolemia is a result of overexpression of low-density lipoprotein with reduced levels of high-density lipoprotein in the blood.

In other words, the condition is a result caused by either overexpression of "bad" cholesterol (LDL) or low levels of "good" cholesterol (HDL).

Cholesterol, a waxy substance produced by the liver or the dietary in moderate amount source plays a critical to aid digestive function in absorbing nutrients, building strong cell membranes, produce steroid hormones and vitamin D. However, excessive amounts in the blood have been found to induce plaque built-up on the arterial wall, leading to heart disease and stroke.

Similar to high blood pressure, people with hypercholesterolemia are asymptomatic. Patients with familial hyper cholesterol may experience symptoms of chest pain with activity. xanthomas, and cholesterol deposits around the eyelids.

The most common complications associated with uncontrolled hypercholesterolemia are carotid artery disease, coronary heart disease, including angina or heart attack, peripheral artery disease, and stroke.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor of heart disease, a leading cause of death in the US. In the US, approximately, 71 million American adults (33.5%) have high low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol, and only 1 out of every 3 adults with high LDL cholesterol has the condition under control.

Compared to hypercholesterolemia, healthy levels of LDL/HDL are any numbers that are less than 4.

There is no single cause of hypercholesterolemia. Epidemiologically, diet, obesity, genetic preposition, and medical conditions such as diseases such as type 2 diabetes and an underactive thyroid are some of the prevalent factors associated with the risk of the condition.

Legume is a class of fruits or seeds of a plant group in the family Fabaceae (or Leguminosae), cultivated all over the world as foods for commercial profits.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of diseases associated with high blood cholesterols, researchers investigated the impact of potential health benefits of legumes as good sources of dietary fiber such as cowpeas, mung beans, pole sitao, chickpeas, green peas, groundnuts, pigeon peas, kidney beans, lima beans and soybeans against hypercholesterolemia.

According to the tested analysis,
* In vitro, the legume showed a good glycaemic index (GI) in non-diabetic and diabetic human subjects.

*The legume exerted a cholesterol-lowering effect in human subjects with moderately raised serum cholesterol levels.

* Kidney beans showed significant reductions for both total (6 %) and LDL-cholesterol (9 %), and groundnuts for total cholesterol (7 %; P < 0.05), compared to other types of legume.

Based on the findings, researchers concluded, "legumes are considered low-GI foods and have shown potential hypocholesterolemic effects. The above studies can be a scientific basis for considering legumes as functional foods".

Taken altogether, legumes may be considered a functional food for the prevention of hypercholesterolemia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Medicines Show A Siginificant Effect on Unspecific #LowBackPain, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Low back pain is a musculoskeletal disorder (MSDs) of degenerative disc disease, with pain persisted for longer than 3 months, affecting over 80% of the population in the US alone at some point in their life.

Chronic LBP prevalence in older adults was significantly higher than in the 21-to-44-year age group and inflicted more disabled, longer symptom duration, etc.(2). The unique impact of CLBP is unknown(3).
Acute lower back pain is a common musculoskeletal disorder (MSDs) caused by injury to the muscles, ligaments, joints, or discs that last less than a few months.

Chronic lower back pain that lasts longer than 6 months, normally caused by damage of nerves in the low back which supplies sensation and power the muscles in the pelvis, legs, and feet.

According to the statistics, up to 80% of the population will experience back pain at some time in their lives. The condition affects people of all ages, particularly in occupations required the use of muscles of the lower back often.

Worldwide, years lived with a disability caused by low back pain have increased by 54% between 1990 and 2015.

Depending on the severity of the condition, chronic lower back pain can induce symptoms of numbness, tingling, or weakness in one or both legs and intense, constant pain that gets worse at night.

Some people with chronic lower back pain may also experience symptoms of loss of bowel or bladder control and unexplained weight loss.

According to the statistics, the lifetime prevalence of non-specific (common) low back pain is estimated at 60% to 70% in industrialized countries with a one-year prevalent rate ranging from 15% to 45%. The adult incidence of lower back pain is 5% per year.

Comfrey is a perennial plant in the genus of Symphytum, belonging to the family Boraginaceae, native to Europe. It has been used in herbal and traditional medicine to ease excessive bleeding or on open wounds, relieve pain and swelling, treat circulation issues, reduce cholesterol, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with neuro and muscle pain, researchers examined the effectiveness of herbal medicine, including comfrey for nonspecific low back pain (LBP).

A systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involved in the searching of studies published on numerous electronic databases up to September 2014 found 14 RCTs with 2050 participants/

Capsicum frutescens (cayenne) reduces pain more than placebo.

Although Harpagophytum procumbens (devil's claw), Salix alba (white willow bark), Symphytum officinale L. (comfrey), Solidago chilensis (Brazilian arnica), and Lavender essential oil also seem to reduce pain more than placebo, evidence for these substances was of moderate quality at best.

All tested herbal medicine herbal showed no significant adverse events within the included trials.
Taken altogether, Comfrey and other herbal medicine may be considered a remedy for the treatment of unspecific low back pain, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Coltsfoot Inhibits Enzymes and Proteins Associated with the Onset of Sepsis, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Sepsis is a medical condition caused by chemicals released into the bloodstream to fight the infection that triggers inflammation throughout the body as a result of severe infection.
According to a study by the University of Utah, the disease is the commonest cause of admission to medical ICUs across the world.

Mortality from sepsis continues to be high. Besides shock and multi-organ dysfunction occurring following the intense inflammatory reaction to sepsis, complications arising from sepsis-related immunoparalysis contribute to the morbidity and mortality from sepsis.

The most common symptoms of sepsis are
* Chilly periphery, fever, jaundice, platelet, and hemoglobin

* Abnormalities of blood pressure, respiration, temperature, and heart rate, and less well-known changes in heart rate variability

* Significantly decreased urine output but accumulative fluid balance had a weak correlation with delta sequential organ failure assessment score (r = 0.32, P = 0.001) and lung injury score (r = 0.13, P = 0.02) and negative correlation with PaO2/FIO2 ratio (r = -0.28, P = 0.001).

* Abrupt change in mental status, difficulty breathing, and abnormal blood circulation.

According to the statistics from the CDC, approximately 1.7 million adults in America were infected by sepsis, leading to the death of 270,000 Americans every year.

Sadly, 1 in 3 patients who die in a hospital have sepsis.

Early recognition of sepsis and septic shock in children relies on obtaining an attentive clinical history, accurate vital signs, and a physical examination focused on mental status, work of breathing, and circulatory status, according to the study by the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used for thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of life-threatening infection, researchers examined the Tussilagone, extracted from Tussilago farfara inhibitory effects on puncture (CLP)-induced mouse model of sepsis.

According to the tested differentiation, the extracts at 1 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg showed a significant effect on decreased mortality and lung injury in CLP-activated septic mice.

Enzymes and proteins associated with the production of inflammatory expressions such as cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and TNF-α in tested septic mice were also attenuated by Tussilago administration.

Furthermore, CLP-induced expression of nitric oxide, prostaglandin E2, TNF-α, and HMGB 1 associated with inflammatory cytokines in the serum of the septic mice has also suppressed the administration of the extract.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Overall, Tussilago exhibited protective effects against inflammation and polymicrobial sepsis by suppressing inflammatory mediators possibly via the inhibition of NF-κB activation and the MAP kinase pathway.".

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the treatment of disease associated with sepsis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#CruciferousVegetables Inhibit the #Glioblastoma Progression by Increasing the Cytotoxicity in the #Cancercells, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Glioblastoma is one of the most aggressive cancers that begins within the brain.
According to statistics, most patients diagnosed with cancer die within 12 to 15 months. Less than 5% of patients are survived longer than five years.

If you are male you are at 1.5 higher risk of glioblastoma, compared to the female counterpart.

The causes of glioblastoma are unknown, some researchers suggested that genetic preposition and environmental factors, previous radiotherapy, and a weakened immune system may be some risk factors associated with the onset of the disease.

Most cases of GBM are diagnosed at an older age with a median age of 64.

Although the disease does not have some specific symptoms, it shares the common symptoms of other types of cancer such as gastrointestinal discomforts accompanied by personality changes, and symptoms similar to those of a stroke.

Most patients with GBM experience symptoms of brain swelling caused by the overexpression of the fluid surrounding the tumor.

Conventionally, due to the nature of rapid growth, surgery is necessary to relieve the brain pressure and remove the tumor as much as possible, followed by radiation and chemotherapy.

According to the statistics, in the US, the incidence affects mostly the elderly with a diagnosed rate of 3.19 per 100,000 persons. The disease is rare in children.

GBM is deadly, patients with GBM have a median survival of less than one year and less than 2% of patients survive three years or more.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climates for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding potential and natural foods that process neuroprotective properties, researchers investigated the protective effect of sulforaphane (SFN), an isothiocyanate (ITC) derived from cruciferous vegetables against glioblastoma (GBM) progression.

According to the tested analysis, the application of SFN in GBM showed to induce apoptosis and to inhibit both growth and invasion of GBM cells [78].

Furthermore, SFN can overcome the chemoresistance of tumor cells.

The efficacy of SFN against the progression of glioblastoma (GBM) was attributed to the phytochemicals that can cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) to reach the tumor mass by inhibiting the functions of MMP-9 in GBM in mediating the BBB alternation.

Furthermore, SFN also demonstrated strong activity in the induction of cancer cell apoptosis and anti-cancer cell proliferation and the protection of healthy neurons.

Moreover, SFN also induces apoptosis of GBM cells by increasing ROS levels in the cancer cells and inhibiting cancer cell migration and/or invasion.

In combination with the chemo drug, SFN improved the function of the drug and reduce the chemoresistance of GBM without conferring significant toxicity to normal cells.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " ...the results of these studies support further investigations using SFN in animal models of GBM.

Taken together, dietary cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional remedies for the prevention and treatment of GBM, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Neurological disorders are medical conditions characterized by any disorder of the nervous system caused by structural, biochemical, or electrical abnormalities.

There are many forms of neurological disorders. The most common types of the disease include neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease, and epilepsy. multiple sclerosis and Migraines.

According to the Medical press, globally, the burden of neurological disorders (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, stroke, epilepsy, etc) has increased substantially over the past 25 years.

These may be the results of over 25 years of economic expansion that have increased the living standard of billion of people in the Southeast Asian region.

The WHO in the evaluation of neurological disorders wrote, "Neurological disorders contribute to 92 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in 2005 projected to increase to 103 million in 2030 (approximately a 12% increase). While Alzheimer's and other dementias are projected to show a 66% increase from 2005 to 2030".

Where one DALY represents the loss of the equivalent of one year of full health.

Believe it or not, there are more than 600 diseases of the central nervous system, including brain tumors, epilepsy, dementia such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, and stroke.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease in the elderly in the Western world, associated with the worsening of memory, thinking, and behavior that severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies, or social life

In finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, scientists examined the neuroprotective effects of Devil's claw.

Devil's claw also known as the wood spider, is a plant of the genus Harpagophytum in the family of Pedaliaceae, native to South Africa.

The plant has been used as an herb in traditional and herbal medicine to treat fever, rheumatoid arthritis, skin, gallbladder, pancreas, stomach and kidney conditions, etc.

According to the active ingredients studied in the laboratory and clinical settings, Devil's claw showed promising natural therapeutics with anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory salutations in protecting neuron integrity.

However, despite the promising and safe therapeutic benefits of CAM/herbal medicines, including Devil's claw, there exists a possible risk when combining them with prescription drugs.

In other words, Devil's claw may interact with drugs that have shown changes in blood pressure, hepatotoxicity, seizures, etc. when used in a combination.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "Certainly, extensive work is needed to make sure that patients should take a regimen of protective and restorative therapy under an experienced healthcare professional".

Taken together, Devil's claw may be considered a remedy for the treatment of neurological disorders, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
