The Health Effects of Herbal #AloeVera, Accvording to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belongings to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan.
The herb has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits.

Aloe vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of diseases, including wounds, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol,...

It is also one of many popular herb studied in scientific ways with some conflicted results.

The Ingredients
The ten main areas of chemical constituents of Aloe vera include: amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, lignins, monosaccharide, polysaccharides, salicylic acid, saponins, and sterols.

1. Diabetes

Diabetes is defined as a condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose. It is either caused by cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Many herbs have been proven in studies to be effective in treating type II diabetes, including Aloe vera.

As a popular herbal remedy in the United Kingdom, oral administration of aloe vera might be a useful adjunct for lowering blood glucose in diabetic patients as well as for reducing blood lipid levels in patients with hyperlipidemia.

In another study of Aloe vera gel in a mouse model of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, Oral administration of PAG for 8 weeks was found to reduce circulating blood glucose concentrations to a normal level in these DIO mice.

Its leaf is also found to be useful in treating diabetes, as the study said A. vera leaf pulp extract showed hypoglycaemic activity in type I (IDDM) and type II (NIDDM) diabetic rats, the effectiveness being enhanced for type II diabetes in comparison with glibenclamide. On the contrary, A. vera leaf gel extract showed hyperglycaemic activity in NIDDM rats.

2. Ance vulgaris
Acne vulgaris, is one of the skin diseases with areas of scaly red skin with seborrhea, blackheads, and whiteheads. Aloe vera one of many herbs has been studied and researched in the pharmaceutical world, because of its common problem to the young ages and commercial profits.

The study to compare the efficacy and safety of the combination of tretinoin (TR) cream (0.05%) and Aloe vera topical gel (50%) with TR and vehicle, has been well tolerated and significantly more effective than TR and vehicle for the treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris and with fewer side effects.

Other researchers in the observation of traditional medicines of many cultures used to treat skin diseases, indicated that certain ingredients, including aloe vera, have been identified in the treatment of psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.

3. Gastric Ulcers

Gastric ulcers are defined as a condition of localized tissue erosion in the lining of the stomach. as a result of the bacteria Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) in most cases.

Some people with gastric ulcers may not experience any symptoms at all, while others may have burning pain, severe nausea, and vomiting.

In the comparison of the effects of Aloe vera and sucralfate on gastric microcirculatory changes, cytokine levels, and gastric ulcer healing, treatment of Aloe vera was found to reduce leukocyte adherence and TNF-alpha level, elevate IL-10 levels and promote gastric ulcer healing.

Because of its anti-inflammatory effects, treatment of A. vera process the enhancement in leukocyte-endothelium interaction are associated with reduction in TNF-alpha level.

Other in another study of acute gastric mucosal lesions induced by 0.6 M HCl and acid output, indicated that Aloe vera is endowed with gastric acid anti-secretory activity and could protect the gastric mucosa at low concentrations against injurious agents.

Another component of Aloe vera, the Polymer fraction (Avpf; molecular weight cut-off ≥50 kDa; 150 mg/kg body weight, p.o.), reduces 50% of the mRNA expressions of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), according to the study.

4. Cancers
Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying in disordered and uncontrollable ways in our body, have become progressively worse and damage other healthy tissues, sometimes spreading to other organs in the body via lymph or blood and results may be in death.

Aloe-Emodi, a chemical compound found in Aloe vera, specifically suppresses breast cancer cell proliferation by targeting ER α protein stability through distinct mechanisms and may be used as a possible application of anthraquinones in preventing or treating breast cancer in the future.

Also in other studies, Aloe-Emodi is considered as a potential value for the treatment of gastric cancer and cervical cancer because its mechanisms are by means of cell cycle interruption and induce differentiation and suppressed the expression of PKCalpha and c-myc.

Radiotherapy is most often used to treat head and neck, cancer patients. Ina study of aloe Vera, Dr. Ahmadi A. found that oral Aloe vera mouthwash may not only prevent radiation-induced mucositis but also may reduce oral candidiasis of patients undergoing head and neck radiotherapy due to its antifungal and immunomodulatory properties.

5. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCO)

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is defined as an endocrinologic disease caused by undeveloped follicles clumping on the ovaries that interfere with the function of the normal ovaries resulting in enlarged ovaries, leading hormone imbalance( excessive androgen), resulting in male pattern hair development, acne, irregular period or absence of period, weight gain and affecting fertility. It affects over 5% of the women population or 1 in 20 women. According to the study by Desai BN, Maharjan RH, and Nampoothiri LP. almost 70% of PCOS women have abnormal serum lipid levels (dyslipidemia) and 50% of these women are obese. Several classes of pharmacological agents have been used to manage dyslipidemia. However, studies have shown adverse effects associated with these drugs.

Aloe Vera may be a potential herb in treating Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome by enhancing the reductions of plasma triglyceride and LDL cholesterol levels, with an increase in HDL cholesterol, or by restoring the ovarian steroid status.

According to the study of PCOS induced in Charles Foster female rats by oral administration of non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor letrozole (0.5 mg/kg body weight, 21 days), AVG-treated PCOS rats exhibited a significant reduction in plasma triglyceride and LDL cholesterol levels, with an increase in HDL cholesterol.

The gel treatment also caused a reversion of abnormal estrous cyclicity, glucose intolerance, and lipid metabolizing enzyme activities, bringing them to normal. Another study also indicated that Aloe vera gel formulation exerts a protective effect against the PCOS phenotype by restoring the ovarian steroid status and altering key steroidogenic activity.

This can be attributed to phyto-components present in the extract.

Dr.Pérez YY and the research team in the study of the Effect of a polyphenol-rich extract from Aloe vera gel on experimentally induced insulin resistance in mice also indicated that decreasing significantly both body weight (p < 0.008) and blood glucose levels of Aloe, calculated using the homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) formula by the polyphenol-rich extract from Aloe vera.

Also in the confirmation of the above result, the study of Aloe vera leaves on blood glucose levels in type I and type II diabetic rat models, vera leaf pulp extract showed hypoglycaemic activity on IDDM and NIDDM rats, the effect being enhanced for type II diabetes in comparison with glibenclamide. On the contrary,

A. vera leaf gel extract showed hyperglycaemic activity in NIDDM rats. It may therefore be concluded that the pulps of Aloe vera leaves devoid of the gel could be useful in the treatment of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Where non-diabetic (ND), type I (IDDM), and type II (NIDDM) diabetic rats.

6. Gingivitis
Gingivitis is defined as a condition of Inflammation of Gum Diseases.

Aloe Vera's anti-inflammatory properties may be the result of the plant being used in the treatment of gum diseases. In the sudy of 45 patients who were diagnosed with plaque-induced gingivitis were included, aloe mouth wash is proven to be the most potential in reduction in gingival inflammation caused by plagues.

Other in the randomized, controlled, and double-blind study, a total of 148 systemically healthy subjects, showed a statistically significant decrease in PI, MGI, and BI scores after the rinse regimen began in comparison with the use of chlorhexidine.

But Dr. de Oliveira SM, and the research team in comparison of Aloe vera and fluoridated dentifrice, found that there was a significant reduction in plaque and gingivitis in both groups, but no statistically significant difference was observed among them (p>0.01), Aloe vera did not show any additional effect on plaque and gingivitis control compared to the fluoridated dentifrice.

7. Psoriasis
Psoriasis is defined as a chronic condition of inflammatory skin disease, affecting the joints and mostly happens to people who are obese and are predisposed to diabetes and heart disease.

Many herbal extracts have been used as topical management of plaque psoriasis, including Aloe vera based on multiple studies.

Aloe vera gel is used in alternative medicine over the century for the treatment of skin diseases, including psoriasis, and a recent study showed that ethanolic extract of Aloe vera leaf gel also produced a significant increase in relative epidermal thickness and an overall antipsoriatic activity of high effective rate.

Other in the comparison of comparison to evaluate the efficacy of Topical aloe vera (AV) and 0.1% triamcinolone acetonide (TA) in mild to moderate plaque psoriasis, AV cream may be more effective than 0.1% TA cream was found to be more effective in reducing clinical symptoms of psoriasis.

Unfortunately, in diverse dermatologic conditions, even though there are some promising results with the use of aloe vera, but clinical effectiveness of oral and topical aloe vera may require further studies, according to the study of Dr. Feily A, and Dr. Namazi MR.

8. Irritable bowel syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome is defined as a condition if a patient is diagnosed with abdominal pain or discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits at least three times a month for the last 3 months without the preexistence of other diseases.

Aloe vera (AV) has long been suggested by herbal medicine in treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms. In the comparison of the effectiveness of a mixture of Aloe vera (AV) and Matricaria recutita (German chamomile, GC) in treating Irritable bowel syndrome, GC inhibited only small bowel transit while the AV/GC mixture delayed gastric emptying at the doses of 150 and 300 mg/kg.

The AV/GC mixture also reduced colonic transit and small bowel transit at the dose of 150 mg/kg. In other randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trials to test the effects of aloe vera for irritable bowel syndrome, there was no evidence that AV benefits patients with IBS and is superior to placebo in improving quality of life proven Irritable Bowel Syndrome patients, but in 49 completed the protocol to 1 month and 41 to 3 months.

Eleven of thirty-one (35%) AV patients, and 6 of 27 (22%) placebo patients responded at 1 month (p = 0.763). Diarrhoea predominant patients showed a trend towards a response to treatment at 1 month (10/23 V 2/14, p = 0.07).

9. Skin diseases

Skin disease is defined as a condition of skin damage and is classified according to each pathogenic cause of diseases.

In a systematic review of Aloe vera's clinical effectiveness, topical application of Aloe vera is not an effective preventative for radiation-induced skin injuries but might be effective for genital herpes and psoriasis.

In support of the above, a study by Feily A, Namazi MR. indicated that Topical application of aloe vera is not effective in sunburn or suntan protection, but might be effective in treating genital herpes, psoriasis, human papillomavirus, seborrheic dermatitis, aphthous stomatitis, xerosis, lichen planus, frostbite, burn, wound healing, and inflammation.

The AntiAging Vitamin E's Studies

Kyle J. Norton

According to the Clinical Centre of Nis, certain plant extracts may have the ability to scavenge free radicals, protect the skin matrix through the inhibition of enzymatic degradation, or promote collagen synthesis in the skin, affecting skin elasticity and tightness(1).

Other suggested that free radicals induced domino effects in production of reactive oxygen species, can react with DNA, proteins, and fatty acids, causing oxidative damage and impairment of antioxidant system, leading injuries damage regulation pathways of the skin, including wrinkles, roughness, the appearance of fine lines, lack of elasticity, and de- or hyperpigmentation marks(2).

Vitamin E may have a substantial and therapeutic effect in reducing major signs of aging, some scientists suggested.

The results were published by a number of respectable institutes, including Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and University of Ljubljana,

Vitamin E, a fat-soluble vitamin, consisting of eight different variants (alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocopherol and alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocotrienol) with varying levels of biological activity, found abundantly in corn oil, soybean oil, margarine, wheat germ oil, sunflower, safflower oils, etc. plays an important role in neurological functions and inhibition of platelet aggregation, regulation of enzymatic activity, free radical scavenger, etc..

According to the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, in stress-induced premature senescence (SIPS) model of human diploid fibroblasts (HDFs), γ-tocotrienol (GTT), a vitamin E variant showed to delay cellular senescence of human diploid fibroblasts through the inhibition of intrinsic mitochondria-mediated pathway which involved the regulation of pro- and anti-apoptotic genes and proteins(3) and prevented cellular aging in human diploid fibroblasts(4), probably through modulating gene expression(5) and protected against oxidative stress-induced cellular aging by modulating the telomere length possibly via telomerase(6).

The molecular mechanism of the tocotrienol-rich fraction (TRF) study insisted that the variants protect against H(2)O(2)-induced oxidative stress in human skin fibroblast culture by modulating the expression of Skin Aging in COL I and COL III genes(Collagen gene) with a concomitant increase in the rate of total collagen synthesis(7).

According to the National University of Malaysia, f alpha-tocopherol (ATF), another variant of vitamin E protected against H(2)O(2)-induced DNA damage and telomere shortening of normal human skin fibroblast cells derived from young and old individual donors(8).

Topical administration of alpha-tocopherol (ATF), in medium doses, may provide some degree of photoprotection against UVA(9).

Some researchers suggested the potential of vitamins in reduced aging progression is a result of the balance between various skin antioxidants of vitamins E and C, through new delivery systems in the induction of delivering vitamins C and E into the skin simultaneously(10).

Other antioxidants such as vitamin E, certain flavonoids, and the carotenoids, β-carotene, lycopene, and lutein, found in healthy foods may also improve skin health through protection against inflammation, oxidative stress, breakdown of the extracellular matrix(11).

In Indian women with facial signs of aging study, the composition of niacinamide, panthenol, and tocopheryl acetate significantly reduced appearance of hyperpigmentation, improved skintone evenness, appearance of lightening of skin, versus control in 6 weeks(12).

Taken together, the composition of vitamin E and other antioxidants and their variants may be effective
in reduced early onset of skin aging and inhibited skin aging progression, but large sample size and multi centers studies to improve this validation are necessary.

Overdoses of vitamin E supplements can cause symptoms of blurred vision, weakness, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, etc., please make sure you follow the guideline of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies.

#Healthyfood Fruits Process Anti the Risk and Onset of #ProstateCancer, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

The widespread prostate cancer, once considered a disease of aging males, now has become a major concern of governments and the scientific community in South East Asia with a tendency to affect even younger age populations.
Evidence emerged of overconsuming bad fats at any time in history accompanied by an unhealthy life style may be the possible causes of the disease, linked to the economic prosperity over 3 decades.

Prostate cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the prostate tissue. At the later stage, the cancerous cells may travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue or organ.

Most prostate cancers are slow growing. Enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during physical (rectum) exams.

The Fruits for Reducing the Risk and Onset of Prostate Cancer
1. Mangosteen fruit
Mangosteen fruit, a tropical fruit grown in South East Asia is an evergreen tree that originated in the Sunda Islands and the Moluccas of Indonesia.

In 22Rv1, LNCaP, and prostate epithelial cells (PrECs), standardized mangosteen fruit extract (MFE), suppressed tumor growth in a xenograft tumor model without causing damage to non-tumorigenic prostate epithelial cells through induction of toxicity(46).

Polyphenols, the main chemical constituent of the fruit extract also targeted multiple signaling pathways involved in cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in prostate cancer(47).
rate
α-Mangostin, a xanthone derived from Polyphenols of mangosteen fruit, demonstrated a significant effect in exhibited cell cycle-related proteins involved in prostate carcinogenesis(48).

2. Long Pepper or Indian long pepper
Used as a spice and seasoning, Long Pepper or Indian long pepper is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae.

Piperlongumine (PL), a natural alkaloid present in the fruit inhibited prostate cancer through the downregulation of Akt downstream signaling of cell proliferation, resulting in decreased mTORC1 (nutrient/energy)activity and autophagy (cell degradation)stimulation(49).

Application of PL also induced rapid depletion of the Androgen receptor (AR) in prostate cancer (PC) cells which is an early indication of prostate cancer(50).

In human prostate cancer DU145, PC-3, and LNCaP cells, piperine, another alkaloid from black and long peppers, also exhibited an anti-proliferative effect in human prostate cancer cells by inducing cell cycle arrest and autophagy(51).

3. Pomegranate
The pomegranate is a fruit-bearing small tree, genus Punica, belongings to the family Lythraceae, native to Iran, and cultivated in Asia since ancient times.

POMx, a pomegranate (PE) formula currently approved for clinical trials, effectively inhibited survivin (baculoviral inhibitor), induced apoptosis, retarded the rate of tumor growth in the skeleton(52).

Polyphenols, main chemical compounds from pomegranate fruit extracts (PFEs), slightly decreased secretion of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 but not MMP-9 (expression usually seen in invasive and highly tumorigenic cancers) from prostate cancer cell lines(53).

Another polyphenol derivative, ellagic acid (EA) converted from Ellagitannins (ETs) from pomegranate juice (PJ), significantly decreased cell proliferation by exhibiting synergism in PC-3 cells(54).

4. Strawberries
Strawberries are a genius of Fragaria × ananassa belongings to the family Rosaceae, grown all over the world with suitable climate for commercial profits and for health benefits.

Application of berry juice study, including strawberry, inhibited prostate cancer cell proliferation, not involve caspase-dependent apoptosis, but in cell-cycle arrest, by down-regulation of the expression of cdk4, cdk6, cyclin D1, and cyclin D3(Decrease the proliferative activity (55).

In fact, major classes of berry phenolics, including anthocyanins, flavonols, flavanols, ellagitannins, gallotannins, proanthocyanidins, and phenolic acids are found to be effective in attenuated growth of many human cancer cell lines, including prostate (LNCaP) tumor cell lines at concentrations ranging from 25 to 200 micro g/mL.(56).

Crude extracts (250 microg/mL) from strawberries and their pure compounds (100 microg/mL) also induced apoptosis of prostate (LNCaP, DU145) cancer cells(57).

5. Grapes
Grape is a woody vine of the genus Vitis, belongings to the family Vitaceae, native to southern Turkey.

Fisetin, a chemical compound found in grapes inhibited prostate cancer cell lines through downregulation of the PI3K/Akt (anti-apoptosis and increased cell proliferation)and the mTOR(energy sources) pathways(58).

Another chemical constituent pterostilbene, in dose-dependent ameliorated cellular proliferation, through activation of expression of AMPK(cellular energy homeostasis) and the p53(antigens).

But in p53-positive LNCaP cells, pterostilbene blocked the progression of the cell cycle at the G1 phase by inducing p53 expression and further up-regulating p21 expression and in p53-negative, induced apoptosis in PC3 cells(59).

Piceatannol found in grapes, exhibited potential anticancer properties by suppressing the proliferation of a wide variety of tumor cells, through cell-cycle arrest, upregulation of antibody antigens and apoptotic activity, and down-regulation of cancer cell proliferation(60).

6. Apple

Apple is the pomaceous fruit of the apple tree, a species of the rose family Rosaceae, cultivated tree fruits. The tree originated in Central Asia.

Apple peel extract (APE), exerted its anti-cancer effects by significant decrease growth and enhanced clonogenic survival of human prostate carcinoma CWR22Rnu1 and DU145 cells, through a G0-G1(Cell cycle) phase arrest(61).

In the study Does an Apple a day keep the oncologist away? showed an inverse association between apple intake and the incidence of cancer(62).

7. Papaya
Papaya is a species of Carica Papaya, belongings to the family Caricaceae and native to the tropics of the Americas, first cultivated in Mexico for several centuries.

Benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC), a solvent of papaya fruit inhibited cancer cell line through induced apoptosis by converging two major pathways: the death receptor-mediated extrinsic and the mitochondrial intrinsic pathway(63).

In the role of diet, papaya effectively (more than 22.7 g/d (50th percentile) reduced prostate cancer risk by 7.4 (Adjusted OR 7.4 (95% CI 1.17-46.8)(64).

Lycopene, a major chemical constituent in tomato, and also in papaya, in prospective and retrospective epidemiological studies showed an inverse relationship between lycopene intake and prostate cancer risk in vitro and in vivo(65).

8. Apricot
The apricot tree is about 8–12 m tall and has a trunk up to 40 cm diameter belongings to the family Rosaceae.

Ethanolic extracts (30%) of apricot inhibited the growth of PC-3 and LNCaP (Prostate cancer cell lines) cells through induction of apoptosis via down-regulating ERalpha (estrogen receptor α), ) and PKC-alpha(interaction with the cell membrane) protein, and binding of both mouse uterine estrogen receptors and LNCaP human androgen receptors(66).

9. Avocado
Avocado, a commercially valuable fruit cultivated in tropical climates throughout the world is a green-skinned, pear-shaped fruit that ripens after harvesting and is native to the Caribbean, Mexico, and South America.

Whole-blood fatty acids testing indicated that higher intakes of dietary MUFA(monounsaturated fatty) with a principal source of dietary avocado intake were inversely related to prostate cancer(67).

Acetone extract of avocado, containing carotenoids and tocopherols decreased the growth of both androgen-dependent (LNCaP) and androgen-independent (PC-3) prostate cancer cell lines in vitro.

Incubation of PC-3 cells with the avocado extract led to G(2)/M cell cycle arrest accompanied by an increase in p27(cell cycle inhibitor) protein expression(68).

10. Citrus fruits

The fruit is the genus Citrus, native to southern and southeast Asia, and includes grapefruit, lemon, orange, etc.

A study of the incidence of prostate cancer in North India compared to South India showed a positive decreased risk of prostate cancer in increasing dietary consumption of tea, citrus fruits, and melon(69).

Citrus consumption is associated with reduced all-cancer incidences, according to a study of cancer incidence among 42,470 Japanese adults in the Ohsaki National Health Insurance Cohort(70).

Oral administration of Gold Lotion (GL), an extract of multiple varieties of citrus peels containing abundant flavonoid, showed the deduction of both the weights (57%-100% inhibition) and volumes (78%-94% inhibition) of the tumors without inducing any adverse toxicity, accompanied by mechanistic down-regulation of the protein levels of inflammatory enzymes (inducible nitric oxide synthase, iNOS and cyclooxygenase-2, COX-2), metastasis (matrix metallopeptidase-2, MMP-2, and MMP-9), angiogenesis (vascular endothelial growth factor, VEGF), and proliferative molecules, as well as inducing apoptosis in prostate tumors(71).

Unfortunately, some studies did not show an association between the intake of citrus fruits and the risk of prostate cancer(72).

11. Bitter melon
Bitter melon, an extremely bitter fruit, is a tropical and subtropical vine belonging to the family Cucurbitaceae, native to Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean.

Treatment of bitter melon extract (BME) in prostate cancer, enhanced Bax expression(involved in p53-mediated apoptosis) and induced PARP(a nuclear protein implicated in DNA repair) cleavage(during apoptosis), delayed the progression to high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (precede the development of prostate adenocarcinoma) and displayed approximately 51% reduction of proliferating cell nuclear antigen expression in mice(73).

MCP30, from bitter melon seeds induced apoptosis in PIN and PCa cell lines in vitro and suppressed PC-3 growth in vivo with no effect on normal prostate cells(74).

Bitter melon leaf extract (BMLE) inhibited the secretion of MMP-2, MMP-9(metastasis), and urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA)(invasion and metastasis) from rat prostate cancer cell line (PLS10)(75).

Taken together, the information findings suggested that certain fruits and their bioactive compounds may have a strong impact on reduced risk, progression, and treatment. however, due to the limitation of the sample, a large cohort study with a larger sample size is necessary to reconfirm their viability.

#Healthyfood #Celery and #CelerySeeds Suppress the Onset of #Arthritis Through Its Antioxidant Activities, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

Celery may be used as natural food therapy in suppressed Arthritis Diseases in the induction of acute and chronic painful or inflammatory symptoms, some scientists suggested.
Arthritis is a class of over 100 medical conditions, affecting people of all ages, sexes, and races.

In an aging population, the most common cause of arthritis is the degeneration of cartilage, the slick, cushioning surface on the ends of bones that have been worn away, causing bone rub against bone, in the induction of pain, swelling, and stiffness.

Depending on the severity of osteoarthritis, patients may experience symptoms that surround the joints in the hands, knees, hips, and spine, such as pain in the joint during or after movement, muscle and feet tenderness, stiffness, loss of flexibility. ... and grating sensation.

The other most common types of arthritis are Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a long-term autoimmune disorder, induces warm, swollen, and painful joints.

According to statistics, approximately, 50 million adults and 300,000 children have some form or type of arthritis.

The CDC statistic from 2013–2015, stated that an estimated 54.4 million US adults (22.7%) annually have ever been told by a doctor that they have some form of arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, lupus, or fibromyalgia(4).

The prevalent risk factor is also depended on where you live. For example, the percentage of adults with arthritis varies by state, ranging from 17.2% in Hawaii to 33.6% in West Virginia in 2015(4).r

The John Hopkins arthritis center suggested, " Data from 32,322 adults in 11 states from the 1998 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS), a health survey given annually in the United States, indicates that adults with arthritis report significantly greater HRQL impairment compared to adults without arthritis"(5).

Celery is a species of Apium graveolens, belongings to the family Apiaceae. The food or vegetable is cultivated all around the globe for commercial profits.

Celery can grow to 1/2 m tall with stalks (leaf on the top) arranged in a conical shape joined at a common base.

According to a recent study, celery seed extract (CSE) processed a strong effect in suppressing arthritis symptoms in a model of polyarthritis without interaction with medication intake. in comparison to aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen

Dr. Powanda MC, the lead researcher said, "Unlike many dietary supplements, the available data suggest that CSE does not significantly affect the p450 enzyme systems( function in interaction with medication intake) and thus is less likely to alter the metabolism of drugs the individual may be taking"

The over-counter (OTC) oral remedies for arthritis and rheumatism classified celery seed extracts are more effective than ibuprofen in the anti-arthritic assay without causing gastric bleeding.

However, treatment of arthritis is ranged from almost zero to highly effective depending on a specific class of products.

Therefore, for maximum effect, the types of celery seed extract (CSE) chosen should only be prescribed by related field specialists.

In support of the above differentiation, the Prince of Songkla University conducted an experiment by applying A. graveolens (AGE), a bioactive compound isolated from celery seed against liver oxidative stress in an adjuvant-induced arthritis rat model.

The results showed that oral administration of AGE (250, 500, and 1,000 mg/kg) for 24 consecutive days reduced symptoms of arthritis through reduced liver oxidative stress and enhanced liver antioxidant properties including host antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD).

Taken together, the intake of celery may be effective in ameliorated symptoms of arthritis through binding to the expression of proinflammatory cytokines.

However, further data collection on large sample sizes and multi-center clinical studies performed with human consumption during the course of the investigation will be necessary to complete the picture of celery and its bioactive compound's protective effect against arthritis possibilities.

#DriedBeans Inhibit Most Types Of #Cancer Onset by Protecting the Integrity of Cells' DNA, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Adding a portion of dried beans into your diet may have a potential effect in reducing the risk of cancer onset, according to the Division of Cancer Prevention, National Cancer Institute.
Dried beans are a nutritionally mighty member of the legume family, belonging to the family Fabaceae.

The healthy sources of dried legumes, include protein, fibers, vitamins, and minerals such as dietary fiber, fat, protein, vitamin A ( beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin), B vitamins, vitamin C, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, ... and zinc can be included in any one diet,

Specific genetic mutations may significantly influence the risk of cancers, such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes which can elevate the risk of breast and ovarian cancers.

According to statistics, women who carry mutated genes BRCA1 and 2 have a 50 to 85 percent increased risk of developing the disease by the age of 70.

Other causes of cancer are unknown, however, researchers suggested that smoking and use of tobacco, unhealthy diet, family history, inactive physical activity, long-term exposure to sun and other types of radiation, infected viruses, and infectious diseases are some of the potential risk factors that may have a strong impact on the development of cancers.

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by cell growth uncontrollably and disorderly, affecting all organs and tissue.

Depending on their invasive nature, some cancers can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other parts of the body.

In the study to investigate 490,802 United States participants of the NIH-AARP Diet and Health cohort using Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for potential confounders and during 2,193,751 person-years of follow-up from 1995/1996-2000, researchers found that
*. Intake of vegetables shows a significant effect in reducing the risk of certain types of cancer.

* The relative hazard ratio risk of cancers was reduced to .95 compared to the control

*. The risk of cancers is reduced substantially as shown in the highest tertile of the Leguminosae group (dried beans, string beans, and peas, 0.80, 0.67-0.96) compared to other groups.

Dried beans and string beans with abundant fiber scored the lower and lowerest relative risk ratio compared to peas and other kinds of vegetables.

Further analysis of diets of African-American men and women, undergoing colonoscopies in order to examine the relationship between selected dietary factors and the risk for colon polyps, according to the multiple logistic regression model used to adjust for potential confounding variables and to determine which factors influence colorectal adenoma risk, researchers said, " consumption of legumes such as dried beans, split peas, or lentils was negatively associated with risk (of cancers)" and "Legumes are a good source of dietary fiber and of phytochemical compounds that may play a role in reducing adenoma formation or growth".

Once again, dried beans exerted the highest effect in reducing the risk of colorectal adenoma compared to other legume types.

Interestingly, in a broader scope of further exploration of the association between legume intake and cancer risk in a case-control study of 11 cancer sites in Uruguay between 1996 and 2004, including 3,539 cancer cases and 2,032 hospital controls, researchers suggested, the intake of legumes including dried peas demonstrate a substantially decreased risk of stomach and prostate cancer and other forms of cancer, including
*. Cavity and pharynx cancer had a relatively odd risk ratio of OR=0.48

*. Esophagus cancer with OR = 0.54

*. Larynx cancer with OR = 0.55

*. Upper aerodigestive tract cancer with OR = 0.50

*. Stomach cancer with OR = 0.69

*. Colorectum cancer with OR = 0.43

*. Kidney cancer relative had an odd risk ratio of.OR = 0.41

* With a relatively odd risk ratio of .68 on all sites combined

After adjusting to other risk factors researchers concluded, "Higher intake of legumes was associated with a decreased risk of several cancers including those of the upper aerodigestive tract, stomach, colorectum, and kidney, but not lung, breast, prostate or bladder".

These results suggested that the protective effect of dried beans in inhibited most types of cancer occurrence may be a result of improvement of host cells integrity against alternation of cells DNA transcription in the induction of cancer.

#Coffee Exerts Anti-#hypercholesterolemic Activity Against the Mortality Risk of Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack) in Patients after a Heart Attack, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Habitual coffee consumed by myocardial infarction patients showed a significantly reduced risk and rate of mortality, some scientists suggested.
Myocardial infarction is another term for a heart attack occurred when blood flow suddenly decreases or stops in a part of the heart, that causes substantial damage to the heart muscle.

The causes of a heart attack are associated with the building up of plaque in the arteries, affecting the volumes of blood flood in transport nutrients and fluids to the body's organs and tissue due to the narrowing of the blood vessels.

Cholesterol narrowing the arteries is one common cause of coronary artery disease, a significant cause of heart attack.

According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood.

People in the early stage of a heart attack may experience symptoms of chest pain or discomfort which may affect the upper body, including pain in the shoulder, arm, back, neck, or jaw.

Researchers at the Mayo Clinic suggested, "Limiting how much saturated and trans fats you eat is an important step to reduce your blood cholesterol and lower your risk of coronary artery disease" and "A high blood cholesterol level can lead to a buildup of plaques in your arteries, called atherosclerosis, which can increase your risk of heart attack and stroke".

In the differentiation of the effect of fruit and vegetable intake and risk for coronary heart disease, Dr. Joshipura KJ at Harvard School of Public Health indicated
* Highest quintile of vegetables and fruit intake is associated with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease with a relative odds ratio of .80 compared to the lowest quintile of intake.

* The risk of coronary heart disease is reduced by 4% for each 1-serving/d increase of fruits or vegetables. The odd ratio decreases further for those who eat green leafy vegetables, regularly.

Coffee, a popular and social beverage worldwide, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In a study of 4365 Dutch patients from the Alpha Omega Cohort, aged 60-80 y (21% female) and experienced an MI <10 y before study enrollment, using baseline (2002-2006), to evaluate the dietary data including coffee consumption over the past month collected and 203-item validated food-frequency questionnaire, after examining the returned questionnaire from participants, researchers showed that
* Most of the patients(96%) were coffee drinkers
* Intake of coffee >4 cups/d, regularly and daily expressed an inverse association to risk of mortality in compared to 0-2 cups/d.
* Motility risk after myocardial infarction (MI) was decreased for every cup of additional coffee intake

Interestingly, researchers also found out that there was no risk difference between caffeine and decaffeinated coffee.

These findings suggested that the efficacy of reduced risk of MI patients' mortality may be associated with chemical constituents in coffee, other than caffeine.

Additionally, in the review of literature in the database of MEDLINE and Embase published between 1946 and 2015, 2 eligible studies involved AMI mortality risk against coffee consumption with a total of 3271 patients and 604 died, in patients classified as light coffee drinkers (1-2 cups/day) versus non-coffee drinkers, heavy coffee drinkers (a>2 cups/day) versus noncoffee drinkers and heavy coffee drinkers versus light coffee drinkers, scientists filed the following results
* All groups showed a significant reduction in risk ratio compared to non-drinkers.

* The hazard risk ratio was 0.79 in light coffee drinkers versus non-coffee drinkers.

* The risk ratio of 0.54 was found in heavy coffee drinkers versus non-coffee drinkers and

* Heavy coffee drinkers versus light coffee drinkers were associated with a risk ratio of 0.69

Although there was no linear association between the amount of coffee intake in the risk of MI and MI morality, coffee intake expressed a strong effect on the risk of MI and MI death in patients after a heart attack.

These results of coffee efficacy may be associated with coffee hypercholesterolemic activity in preventing cholesterol building up for the development of coronary artery disease(5).

Most important, even though habitual coffee consumption exerted an enormous effect in reducing risk
coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmia, and stroke as well as decreasing risk of mortality, but most of the data on coffee's health effects are based on observational examination with very few randomized, controlled studies, and association does not prove causation.

Therefore, further data collection on studies performed with human consumption over a long-term in compared coffee and noncoffee intake ( risk of heart attack)and during the course of the disease(risk of mortality) will be necessary to complete the picture of possibilities of coffee efficacy.

Additionally, while addressing the possible advantages of regular coffee consumption, researchers must also take into account potential, risks such as anxiety, insomnia, tremulousness, and palpitations.

#Herbal #AndrographisExtract and Andrographolide Kill Gastric/Stomach Cancer Cells By Increasing Several Growth-Inhibiting and Apoptosis-Regulating Proteins, Scientists Find

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a chemical constituent isolated from Andrographis paniculata, with the potential in reducing the risk and treatment of gastric cancer, a respectable institute study suggested.
Gastric/Stomach cancer is a condition of abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach.

Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of gastric cancer.

The causes of gastric cancer are debatable, but some researchers suggested that people with chronic
gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD), a condition caused by the frequent backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus, is the most likely to develop disease(4).

Other diseases associated with the early onset of gastric cancer are obesity and smoking(4).

According to the Universidad de Salamanca, bacteria and viruses, including Helicobacter pylori are strongly associated with chronic gastritis, clinical syndromes, precancerous lesions, and pathogenesis of gastric cancer development(5).

If you experience some of the symptoms such as feeling bloated after eating, feeling full after only eating small amounts of food, persistent heartburn, severe indigestion, stomach pain,.... and persistent vomiting, please check with your doctor the right way for the arrangement of a diagnosis(4).

The picture captured during the exam may sometimes be misdiagnosis as an ulcer, a mushroom-shaped or linitis plastica.

If a suspicious area is found, endoscopic ultrasound may be necessary to rule out the cancer onset possibility.

Most importantly, compared to antioxidant effects in a patient with H. pylori gastritis and gastric cancer, researchers found that the concentration of serum superoxide dismutase and serum malondialdehyde that exhibiting oxidative stress caused by overexpression of free radicals are significantly higher and plasma ascorbic acid, the antioxidants are significantly lower in gastric cancer patients.

These results suggested gastric cancer is also associated with the imbalance of the ratio of antioxidants produced by the host enzymes and free radical accumulation, leading to elevated ROS that cause oxidative stress in alternated DNA of gastric cells through cytotoxicity.

According to the Canadian cancer society, in 2017(6), an estimated:
* 3,500 Canadians were diagnosed with stomach cancer.

* 2,100 Canadians died from stomach cancer.

* 2,200 men were diagnosed with stomach cancer and 1,250 died from it.

* 1,300 women were diagnosed with stomach cancer and 790 died from it.

Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.

The herb has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic for the treatment of the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia,...

According to the joint study led by Chosun University, Andrographolide, a natural compound isolated from Andrographis paniculata, exerted potentiated apoptosis and reduction of the ability of a cell to form clones triggered by recombinant human tumor necrosis factor of signaling systemic inflammation involved immune stimulation.

The study also found that Andrographolide enhances TRAIL(a protein functioning as a ligand in regulating the process of cell death)-induced apoptosis by interfering with cell division via a protein functioning involved in the process of cell death and ROS generation in gastric cancer.

Dr. Lim SC, the lead author said, "Exposure of GC cells to andrographolide altered the expression level of several growth-inhibiting and apoptosis-regulating proteins, including death receptors".

In three gastric cancer cell lines (SGC7901, MGC803, BGC823), with Application of Andrographis significantly decreased gastric cancer cells' adherence to stimulated endothelial cells by inhibiting the E-selectin expression that activated cytokines of the immune system.

Taking all together, Andrographis paniculata with high levels of Andrographolide may be used as a therapeutically promising product in reducing the risk and treatment of gastric cancer.

However, further data collection on large sample sizes and multi-center clinical studies performed with human consumption during the course of the investigation will be necessary to complete the picture of Andrographis and its bioactive compound's protective effect against gastric cancer possibilities.

Intake of Andrographis paniculata supplement should be taken with exceptional care as overdoses may cause acute liver toxicity.
