#Greentea's EGCG and #Indonesian Water-Soluble #GreenteaExtract Inhibit Cellulitis Caused by Bacterial Infection, Studies Find

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect of reducing risk and treatment of cellulitis, some scientists suggested.
The results of the investigation were evaluated by a number of respectable institutes, including the University of Indonesia and Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, and published online in some medical literature databases including PubMed.

Cellulitis is a common and serious bacterial skin infection that affects the deep layer of skin, caused mostly by Staphylococcus and Streptococcus bacteria, inducing symptoms of a red, swollen skin rash (usually on the lower legs or arms) that feels tender and hot.

The skin infectious disease can appear anywhere in the body, however, in most cases, it affects the skin of the lower legs.

Some researchers suggested that people with a weakened immune system such as age population and intake of immune suppressive drugs and obesity are most likely to develop cellulitis.

As always, most cases of cellulitis are treated with antibiotics for a period of 5-10 days. Please make sure that you discuss the side effects of the medicine with your doctor.

Although it is rare, some people with severe cellulitis experience severe symptoms of high fever or vomiting and fail to respond to treatment.

Recurrences of cellulitis may require antibiotics that are given by IV.

Green tea is a precious drink that processed a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

In the search for natural antibiotics against skin infections such as cellulitis, by reviewing some plants for the treatment of skin diseases taken place during the past 17 years using of plants is as old as mankind, researchers found that green tea with abundant polyphenols, epigallocatechin gallate exerts a strong effect as antioxidants to reduce the risk of skin diseases, including tumors, herpes, and cellulitis.

According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, the application of EGCG also demonstrated potential in rejuvenating old skin cells.

Further analysis of green tea catechins, the major green tea polyphenols, exhibited antimicrobial activity against resistant pathogens in the induction of skin infection, including cellulitis, researchers at the Mashhad University of Medical Sciences conducted a study to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values of different agents against bacterial strains, through assessing the interactions of green tea extract, epi gallate catechin, epigallocatechin gallate, two types of methylxanthine, caffeine, and theophylline with gentamicin against standard and clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and the standard strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa).

According to the final phase of the experiment, researchers indicated that
*The MICs of gentamicin against bacterial strains were in the range of 0.312 - 320 μg/mL and the MIC values of both types of catechins were 62.5 - 250 μg/ mL.

* Green tea extract showed insufficient antibacterial activity when used alone

* Methylxanthines had no intrinsic inhibitory activity against any of the bacterial strains tested.

* When green tea extract and catechins were combined with gentamicin, the MIC values of gentamicin against the standard strains and a clinical isolate were reduced, and synergistic activities were observed (FICI < 1).

* A combination of caffeine with gentamicin did not alter the MIC values of gentamicin.

The results of all comparisons after taking into account other co and confounders revealed that green tea extract and catechins potentiated the antimicrobial action of gentamicin against some clinical isolates of S. aureus and standard P. aeruginosa strains", Dr. Fazly Bazzaz BS, the lead author said.

Moreover, they evaluate the antibacterial activity of the Indonesian water-soluble green tea extract, Camellia sinensis, against clinical isolates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) (MRSA) and multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MDR-P. aeruginosa) also lends support of the above differentiation.

According to the University of Indonesia,
* The inhibition zone diameter of green tea extracts for S. aureus ATCC 25923 and MRSA were (18.970 ± 0.287) mm, and (19.130 ± 0.250) mm respectively.

* While the inhibition zone diameter for P. aeruginosa ATCC 27853 and MDR-P. aeruginosa were (17.550 ± 0.393) mm and (17.670 ± 0.398) mm respectively.

* The MIC of green tea extracts against S. aureus ATCC 25923 and MRSA were 400 µg/mL and 400 µg/mL, respectively.

* Finally, the MIC for P. aeruginosa ATCC 27853 and MDR-P. aeruginosa were 800 µg/mL, and 800 µg/mL, respectively.

Taken together, green tea and its bioactive compounds may be considered as a functional food for reduced risk and treatment of cellulitis caused by Staphylococcus and Streptococcus bacterial infection.

#Yoga Treatment Improves #Osteopenia and #Osteoporosis for Patients with Vertebral Bone Loss, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

oga participated may benefit to individuals with osteoporosis by reducing complications of fractures, some studies suggested.
Osteoporosis is a Musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) medical condition, characterized by decreased bone density.

The exact causes of osteoporosis are unknown. Neither researchers understood that people with the same health conditions are affected by the imbalance between new bone formation and bone resorption while others do not.

However, researchers do know that certain risk factors such as a lid to increase lifelong calcium-deficient diet, age, female, family history,.... bone structure, and being overweight are associated with the early onset of osteoporosis.

Furthermore, long-term intake of certain medications such as prednisone and a medical condition such as rheumatoid arthritis are also the osteoporosis prevalent risk factors

According to the statistic, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men older than 50 will suffer from an osteoporosis fracture, worldwide.

Yoga, the ancient practice for harmonized external and internal body well-being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been well known to people the in Western world and some parts of Asia.

Some of yoga's health benefits were reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

In the review of the literature published in PubMed, Medline, and Cochrane databases between 1966 and 2011 about topics related to osteoporosis and spinal movement. researchers found that
*Yoga, as a moderate form of exercise showed to strengthen the muscles supporting the spinal column, promote balance, improve posture, and enhance the quality of life.

* Yoga attendees may also benefit from varied spinal movement in preserving the health and strength of the vertebral bodies.

* Yoga exercises modified by experts may be helpful in reducing the risk of fracture depending on the risk of vertebral fractures of attendees

After adjusting to other risk factors, Dr, Smith EN the lead author said, "Yoga therapists are cautioned to not apply a one-size-fits-all approach when working with this population".
Furthermore, the study is also concerned that more studies are needed to further evaluate the yoga poses presence which provides the least risk and greatest benefit to individuals with osteoporosis.

Physically, yoga postures and exercise exert a significant effect on stimulating bone metabolism and enhancing physical function. the As impact moderate exercises are recognized as beneficial for the stimulation of bone tissue, muscle strength, and type of muscle contraction associated with changes in bone metabolism.

Additionally, in support of the above differentiation, researchers at Istanbul University conducted a review of literature posted in databases with 26 postmenopausal osteoporotic women over 55 years of age who satisfied the criteria selected and found that
* Yoga may be used as a form of exercise in the field of osteoporosis rehabilitation.

* Yoga lessons expressed a positive influence on balance, posture, flexibility, and life quality.

* Yoga education has a positive effect on pain, physical functions, and social functions, in general, particularly in post postmenopausal osteoporotic women.

However, according to the reports from the Mayo Clinic in the examine 3 patients with osteopenia, but in good health and pain-free, who started yoga exercises to improve their musculoskeletal health, researchers warned yoga classes without tailoring to individual students needed may induce pain and complications with some flexion yoga positions in the patients with osteopenia of that can lead to concern that fracture risk and increased even further in osteoporosis.

Dr. Sinaki M, said, "Although exercise has been shown to be effective for improving bone mineral density and decreasing fracture risk, our subjects had the development of VCFs and neck and back pain with yoga exercises. This finding suggests that factors other than bone mass should be considered for exercise counseling in patients with bone loss. The increased torque pressure applied to vertebral bodies during SFEs may be a risk".

Furthermore, the study also advises that even though yoga exercise prescribed for patients with vertebral bone loss, is effective and important for the treatment of osteopenia and osteoporosis but instructors should need to know some positions that can contribute to extreme state ain on spines with bone loss.

Taking all together, yoga may be considered an integrated form of exercise for all ages, but in the older population with osteoporosis, yoga instructors should select an applicable lesson that provides the least risk and greatest benefit to individuals with osteoporosis.

#Phytochemical #Allicin Exerts a Strong #Antioxidant Activity Against Free Radical Damage, Researchers Find

Kyle J, Norton

Phytochemicals may be the next potential source of new medications for the treatment of diseases with little or no side effects.
Scientists may have found a dietary and bioactive ingredient for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress.

Allicin is phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compounds, found abundantly in onion and garlic.

Oxidative stress is a condition characterized by the overexpression of free radicals in the host body.

Most cases of oxidative stress are caused by the inability of the host liver in stimulating the production of antioxidant enzymes which play a critical role in inhibiting the free radical expression, causing oxidative stress.

In a healthy individual, the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes is always balanced.

However, an individual whose antioxidant enzymes were suppressed due to damage to the antioxidant enzyme's productive system or other sources may have a greater risk of the onset of oxidative stress.

Dietary antioxidant intake such as fruits and vegetables may be helpful to keep the free radical in check.

Oxidative stress has been found to cause damage to cell lipids, proteins, and DNA, leading to many chronic diseases, including atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion injury, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammation, and stroke.

The oxidative stress that causes chronic ailment is a result of a chain reaction started by free radical donating or steal an electron from another atom, leading to a domino effect that can not be stopped until all outer ring electron of free radicals is paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

A free radical is any atom or molecule that has a single unpaired electron in an outer shell and is highly reactive to react with another cell.

Most free radicals and other ROS are derived internally either from normal essential metabolic processes in the human body or from external sources such as exposure to X-rays, ozone, cigarette smoking, air pollutants, and industrial chemicals.

Antioxidants are biomolecules that inhibited oxidation.
On finding a natural ingredient and whole food for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers investigated the effect of allicin (the active ingredient of garlic) contained in the commercial preparation of Garlicin against hydroxyl radicals (.OH) using high-pressure liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method.

Allicin was equivalent in Garlicin (1.8, 3.6, 7.2, 14.4, 21.6, 28.8, and 36 micrograms) and produced concentration-dependent decreases in the formation of 2,3-DHBA and 2,5-DHBA, the OH adduct products.

The inhibition of the formation of 2,3-DHBA and 2,5-DHBA with 1.8 micrograms/ml was 32.36% and 43.2% respectively while with 36.0 micrograms/ml the inhibition was approximately 94.0% and 90.0% respectively.

These results suggested that allicin is highly active against the OH adduct products through its free radical scavenging activity.

Furthermore, Allicin also exerted a significant antioxidant activity by preventing the lipid peroxidation of liver homogenate in a concentration-dependent manner.

Additionally, by examing the antioxidant effects of four main chemical classes, alliin, allyl cysteine, allyl disulfide, and allicin, prepared by chemical synthesis or purification, researchers discovered
* Alliin scavenged superoxide, while allyl cysteine and allyl disulfide did not react with superoxide.

* Allicin suppressed the formation of superoxide by the xanthine/xanthine oxidase system, probably via a thiol exchange mechanism.

* Allicin did not exhibit hydroxyl radical scavenging activity in this study, probably due to some unknown mechanisms.

The finding suggested that allyl disulfide, alliin, allicin, and allyl cysteine exhibit different patterns of antioxidant activities as protective compounds against free radical damage.

Taken together, allicin-processed high levels of free radicals scavenging activity may be used for the prevention of the overexpression of ROS in the initiation of oxidative stress.

#Phytochemicals #PhyticAcid Inhibits #ProstateCancer by Suppressing Proliferation, and Induced Apoptosis, Scientists Find

Kyle J. Norton

Phytochemicals phytic acid may be the next generation natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, some scientists found.
Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disordered and uncontrollable way in our body.

As cancer continued proliferation, at certain stages it can damage other healthy tissues. Sometimes cancer cells can spread to other organs in the body via lymph or blood.

Prostate cancer is a medical condition caused by the alternation of the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissue.

Most prostate cancers are slow growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during the physical (rectum) exams.

According to the statistic, approximately, 1 man in 9 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime and 6 cases in 10 are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older.

Prostate cancer shared common symptoms of an enlarged prostate, including frequent urination particularly at night, weak or interrupted urine flow, and erectile dysfunction.

Symptoms which are not found in enlarged prostate include blood in the urine and blood in the seminal fluid.

If you are experiencing some of the above symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of prostate cancer

The causes of prostate cancer are unknown. The increases with age, especially after age 50. family history. ethnicity, hereditary breast, and ovarian cancer (HBOC) syndrome, and genetic proposition are some risk actors associated with the onset of the disease.

Some researchers suggested that a poor diet is one of the major risk factor found in patients with the disease.

Dr. Amir Bagher, the lead scientist evaluated the dietary patterns and risk of prostate cancer and wrote, "After adjustment for potential confounders, a healthy dietary pattern was associated with decreased risk of prostate cancer (highest versus lowest tertile OR:0.24; 95% CI: 0.07-0.81; trend p: 0.025). An unhealthy dietary pattern was related to increased risk of prostate cancer(highest versus lowest tertile OR:3.4; 95% CI: 1.09-10.32; trend p: 0.037)".

And, "an unhealthy dietary pattern was associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer. However, a healthy dietary pattern was associated with a decreased risk of prostate cancer".

The results strongly suggested that by following a healthy diet pattern, one can substantially reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

Phytic acid (Inositol hexaphosphate) are phytochemicals of the organic acid found abundantly in nuts, sesame seeds, soybeans, wheat, pumpkin, beans, almonds, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of prostate cancer with no side effects, researchers assessed the effects of phytic acid (inositol hexakisphosphate (IP6)) on the activation of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)-Akt pathway in promoting survival, proliferation, and angiogenesis in human prostate cancer cells.

In invasive human prostate cancer, PC-3 and C4-2B cells, IP6 treatment of cells suppressed proliferation, and induced apoptosis through protein associated with the apoptotic and cell death programming pathways.

Phytic acid also inhibited cancer cells through proteins associated with cancer cell growth, proliferation, differentiation, and motility.

Furthermore, IP6 inhibited transcription and cell migration. through cell cycle arrest at the G1 phase.

Dr. Gu M, the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders said, " IP6 suppresses cell survival, proliferation, and angiogenesis but induces death in prostate cancer cells, which might have translational potential in preventing and controlling the growth of advanced and aggressive prostate cancer for which conventional chemotherapy is not effective".

In advanced and androgen-independent human PCa PC-3, Treatment of PC-3 cells with 2 mM IP6 strongly inhibited both growth and proliferation and decreased cell viability; similar effects were also observed in other human PCa DU145 and LNCaP cells.

IP6 also caused a strong apoptotic death of PC-3 cells through proteins associated with the activation of cell death programming and induced apoptosis.

The inhibition of PC-3 cancer cell line by IP6 also is associated with the inhibition of the protein involved cells proliferation, differentiation, similar to that of the above study.

Interestingly, researchers also discovered that IP6 also inhibited the transcription factor activity in promoting cancer cell growth and reproduction, and regeneration

Where a transcription factor (TF) is a protein that controls the rate of transcription of genetic information from DNA to messenger RNA.

Taken altogether, phytochemicals phytic acid may be considered a bioactive compound for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of prostate cancer.

#Herbal #Butterbur Reduces the Levels of #Anxiety and #Depression in Patients with #SomatoformDisorder, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural herbal medicine for the prevention and treatment of Somatoform disorders with no side effects, according to studies.
Somatoform disorders are a group of psychiatric disorders that trigger unexplained physical symptoms.

Researchers do not the exact cause of the disorders. However, genetic preposition and family history are the 2 most common risk factors associated with the onset of the condition.

The most common symptoms include persistent pain or fatigue, emotional distress, and problems functioning.

The American Family Physician in the article Somatoform Disorders suggested up to 50 percent of primary care patients present with physical symptoms that cannot be explained by a general medical condition. Some of these patients meet criteria for somatoform disorders.

Dr. Bener A, the lead scientist, in examining the gender effects on somatoform disorders in a sample size of 1689 patients, including 892 men and 797 women suggested
* The prevalence rate of somatoform disorders among the total screened sample was 23.9%.

* Housewives (43.5%) and men in administrative posts (37.9%) reported higher somatic symptoms compared to other professions.

* Prolonged depressive reaction was significantly higher in women compared to men.

* There was a significant gender difference in certain psychiatric diagnostic categories such as depressive episode, recurrent depressive disorder, dysthymia, and brief depressive reaction.

* Backache was the most commonly reported symptom in men, whereas a headache was more common in women.

These results clearly suggested being female is a risk factor for Somatoform disorders and symptoms of Somatoform disorders. Somatoform disorders affect the different aspects of the patient depending on gender.

Women with Somatoform disorders are more likely to experience psychological symptoms compared to males.

Butterbur, found in wet, marshy, damp land, including wetlands, riversides, forests, etc., is a creeping underground plant, genus Petasites of 15 -20 species, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Northern Hemisphere.

Herbal medicine has been used in herbal medicine used as a pain reliever in the digestive system, including the stomach, bile ducts, duodenum, etc.

The chemical constituents of Butterbur include Petioles, petasitene and pethybrene, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-6''-O-acetylglucoside, and rutin, caffeic acid, alkaloids, S-petasin, and iso-S-petasin, etc.

With an aim to find a natural formula for the treatment of Somatoform disorder with no side effects, researchers at the University Hospital Zurich examined the effects of mixed herbal drug combination with and without butterbur (Ze 185) on patients with somatoform disorders.

In a total of 182 patients randomized for a 3-arm trial (butterbur root, valerian root, passionflower herb, lemon balm leaf versus valerian root, passionflower herb, lemon balm leaf versus placebo) compared to a fixed herbal drug combination (Ze 185 = 4-combination versus 3-combination without butterbur and placebo) in patients with somatoform disorders in a 2-week treatment in patients with somatization disorder (F45.0) and undifferentiated somatoform disorder (F45.1), researchers discovered the 4-combination was significantly superior to the 3-combination and placebo (4-combination > 3-combination > placebo) in all the primary and secondary parameters (PP-population).

The levels of anxiety and depression, according to the Anxiety (visual analog scale - VAS) and depression (Beck's Depression Inventory - BDI) are also decreased more in 4 combinations compared to others.

According to the Clinical Global Impression (CGI) rating scales, 4 combinations also showed reduced symptom severity and improved treatment response compared to the 3 combinations.

The results are further reconfirmed by the ITT population analysis.

Where (ITT) analysis is a treatment in which patients enrolled and randomly allocated to treatment are included in the analysis and are analyzed in the groups to which they were randomized.

All tested subject expressed no serious adverse effects during the course of experiments.

These results suggested the herbal preparation (Ze185) may be an efficacious and safe short-term treatment in patients with somatoform disorders.

Taken altogether, herbal Butterbur used alone or combined with other herbal medicine may be considered a functional herbal for prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of Somatoform disorder with no serious side effects,

#Andrograpanin Found in #Herbal #Andrographis Shows a Strong Anti-inflammatory and Anti-Infection Activity, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a herbal plant for the treatment of inflammatory diseases with no side effects, according to the studies.

Inflammation is a natural reaction of the immune system's self-protection to remove harmful stimuli, including damaged cells, irritants, and pathogens... from our body.

Acute inflammatory inflammation is a result of the over-response of the immune system after sensing the injury or damage to the body by activating the protein associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

The aim of the proinflammatory cytokines is to kill the invasive pathogens, which try to enter the body through the wound.

The immune system in the stimulating production of proinflammatory cytokines may induce overproduction of these cytokines can cause death or damage to the nearby cells, leading to scar formation and symptoms of localized swelling, redness, and fever.

Chronic inflammation is a serious condition caused by the immune system's to adapt to the new change due to its inability to kill all the invasions within a set of times.

Some researchers in the observation of the history of immune evolution suggested that the immune system also try to adapt to a new environment such as chronic inflammation if, for whatever reason, it can not fill all invasive pathogens within 3 to weeks, leading to the development of several diseases and conditions, including some cancers and rheumatoid arthritis.

Furthermore, chronic inflammation can also be caused by the autoimmune disorder, which involves your immune system mistakenly attacking healthy tissue, and long-term exposure to irritants, such as industrial chemicals or polluted air.

Dr. Anne M. Minihane, the lead scientist in the study "Low-grade inflammation, diet composition, and health: current research evidence and its translation" wrote, "An unresolved inflammatory response is likely to be involved from the early stages of disease development" and " The latest research in the areas of acute and chronic inflammation and cardiometabolic, gut and cognitive health is presented along with the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying inflammation–health/disease associations".

And. " Such approaches are likely to provide a more discriminating means of quantifying inflammation–health/disease associations, and the ability of diet to positively modulate inflammation and provide the much-needed evidence to develop research portfolios that will inform new product development and associated health claims".

The results clearly suggested that adding certain amounts of anti-inflammatory foods into your diet may be the best way to prevent chronic inflammatory diseases.

Andrographis paniculata also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka. It has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chicken pox, etc.

With an aim to reaffirm the traditional use of Andrographis paniculata for the treatment of infection and inflammation, researchers examined the effects of Andrograpanin, one of the diterpene lactones in A. paniculata in vivo and in vitro.

Application of Andrograpanin inhibited the NO and other 3 pro-inflammatory cytokines in a range from 5-90 microM in a dose-dependent manner.

The efficacy of the anti-inflammatory activity of Andrograpanin was associated with the reduction of the expression of iNOS, enzymes in catalyzing the production of NO, and pro-inflammatory cytokines gene (proteins) expression.

Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory effects were contributed by inhibiting the protein (p38) and (mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPKs)) which are responsive to stress stimuli, p38, and stress response.

Dr. Liu J, after taking into account co and confounders wrote, "Andrograpanin might be useful as a potential anti-inflammatory leading compound for inflammatory drug development".

In an additional analysis of other major compounds isolated from herbal Andrographis, researchers looked into Human β-defensin-2 (hBD-2), an inducible antimicrobial peptide that plays an important role in innate immunity.

As a prediction, according to the PCR and Western blot assays, injection of Andro (1.0-10 µmol/L) exhibits the expression of hBD-2 in a dose-dependent manner.

However, under the expression of SB203580 (an inhibitor of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK)), MG-132 (an inhibitor of nuclear factor κB (NF-κB)), and an NF-κB activator inhibitor, but not by an inhibitor of ERK (PD98059) or by an inhibitor of JNK(SP600125), the effects of hBD-2 mRNA and protein expression in responsive to andro were attenuated.

These results clearly suggested andro exerts its antimicrobial effects by exhibiting the expression of hBD-2 by regulating the functions of the innate immune response against stress and stimuli.

Taken altogether, herbal Andrographis processed with high levels of bioactive compounds may be considered a functional remedy against inflammation and infection.

#Mangiferin (MF) Found in #Papaya and #Mango Inhibits #ChronicInflammatoryDiseases Associated with Overexpression of Proinflammatory Cytokines, Studies Find

By Kyle J. Norton

In seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have found a whole fruit for the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, according to studies.
Inflammation is a natural immune response which protects our body against the invasion of stimuli and foreign pathogens.

During the acute phase of infection, the immune first line of defense activates the protein associated with the production of blood palettes to cover the wound and inflammatory cytokines to the site of injury with an aim to prevent and kill off microorganisms.

However, the overproduction of inflammatory cytokines not only can induce fever, swelling, and pain in the affected area but also damage to the nearby cells and tissue, leading to the formation of scars.

Chronic inflammatory diseases are a class of conditions involving low-grade inflammation to the affect tissue or organ. Some researchers suggested that the immune system has evolved over thousands of years to kill off foreign invasive pathogens within a period of time, normally between 3 to 8 weeks. If the immune fails to do so, it will adapt to the new change, leading to chronic inflammation.

There are several factors that cause the onset of the conditions. Some scientists indicated untreated acute inflammation, such as an infection or injury and an autoimmune disorder involving the immune system mistakenly attacking healthy tissue are the most causes of chronic inflammatory diseases.

Certain risk factors such as long-term exposure to irritants, such as industrial chemicals or polluted air, the increase in age, being obesity or obesity, low sex hormone production, sleep disorder, and diet.

The Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset Solna study suggested that cigarette smoking is emerging as a strong risk factor in the otherwise unknown etiology of chronic inflammatory diseases. The risk of nicotine smokers showed a substantial increase in the risk of chronic inflammatory diseases compared to ever-nonsmokers.

Papaya is a species of Carica Papaya, belonging to the family Caricaceae and native to the tropics of the Americas, and was first cultivated in Mexico several centuries

With an aim to investigate the therapeutic potential of fruit and vegetables in the inhibition of inflammation, with no side-effects and the whole foods additive and synergistic benefits, researchers at the Universiti Putra Malaysia examined the role of papaya in mediating inflammatory responses.

On cells of healthy individuals, according to the flow cytometry methods, injection of the fruit significantly inhibited the overexpression of IFN-γ(+), a cytokine that is critical for innate and adaptive immunity and CD4(+), in the activation of the cells of the innate immune system, B-lymphocytes, cytotoxic T cells.

The application also showed to increase the levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines which play a critical role in reducing the risk of inflammation.

These results suggested that papaya suppressed the pro-inflammatory cytokines through its anti-inflammatory response mediated through Tregs, a specialized subpopulation of T cells that act to suppress the immune response.

In other words, papaya modulates the systematic immune response through a set of mechanisms in the acute phase of infection.

Furthermore, on finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment for patients with sepsis, a serious unbalanced hyperinflammatory condition, researchers evaluated the effect of mangiferin (MF), a natural glucosyl xanthone found in both mango and papaya.

The application of mangiferin (MF) was found epidemiologically to attenuate cecal ligation and puncture-induced mortality and acute lung injury (ALI), by reducing systemic and pulmonary inflammatory responses.

In Sepsis patients, pretreatment with MF inhibits sepsis-activated mitogen-activated protein kinases which play a critic role in directing cellular responses to a diverse array of stimuli, and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells signaling (NF-κB) associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokine for cell survival.

These actions indicated that pretreatment with MF inhibits the production of proinflammatory mediators associated with immune responses.

In the tested animal, MF dose-dependently exhibited the expression and activity of heme oxygenase (HO)-1, a gene that plays a critical role in the prevention of vascular inflammation. in the lung of septic mice.

Dr.Gong X, the lead scientist said, 'MF attenuates sepsis by up-regulation of HO-1 that protects against sepsis-induced ALI through inhibiting inflammatory signaling and proinflammatory mediators", after taking into account co and confounders.

Interestingly, in the evaluated fermented papaya preparation, a functional food supplement, researchers at the Touro College of Pharmacy also found that the fermentation exhibited anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunostimulatory (at the level of the mucous membrane), through a set of bioactive compounds found in the fruit.

Taken altogether, papaya may be considered a functional fruit for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with chronic inflammation.
