Herbal Cascara Sagrada may have a potential and positive effect in reducing risks and treatment of constipation, according to studies.
Constipation is a condition of infrequent bowel movements caused by hard and dry stool.
Without bowel movement that lasts longer than 3 days is considered to have a condition of constipation
Chronic constipation can lead to symptoms of abdominal pain, bloating, and feeling as if one has not completely passed the bowel movement.
In severe cases, chronic constipation can cause the complications of formation of hemorrhoids, anal fissures, or fecal impaction.
According to the statistic, constipation most often affects women, and adults ages 65 and older. Constipation is highly prevalent, with approximately 12 million general practitioner prescriptions for laxatives in England in 2001.
The most common risk factors for the onset of the condition include a poor diet with less fiber, overuse of laxatives, certain medical conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, colon cancer, long-term use of certain medications, such as narcotics, and depressants, and resistance the urge to poop.
Some researchers suggested that atypical defecation habits are one of the most risk factors associated with the risk of constipation that is harder to treat.
Ms. Isabelle Beaudry-Bellefeuille in the examine the risk of chronic constipation with atypical defecation habits in children, wrote, "Atypical defecation habits are common and distressing for children and families and can have a major impact on quality of life. Often, no underlying factor can be identified, and the defecation disorder is considered functional".
And, "Current interventions are not successful for up to 50% of children. We suggest this high failure rate may be caused by a lack of consistency in the descriptors of behavioral indicators for functional defecation problems. Most investigations and descriptors focus on general behavior. There are fewer reports concerning defecation-specific behaviors".
More investigations are necessary before a strategy can be found for the treatment of chronic constipation with atypical defecation habits in children.
Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America. The herbal bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc.
The chemical constituents of Cascara Sagrada include Aloe-emodin, Anthrquinone glycosides (Barbaloin Cascarosides A, B, C and D ChrysaloinFrangul), Chrysophanol, Emodin, Heterodianthrones palmidin A, B, and C, dianthrones, Oxanthrone, Rhein, Tannins, etc.
Researchers concerned about the high prevalence of constipation used laxatives, a colon-addictive substance, and examined the effects of cascara sagrada accompanied by the infection of ear mushrooms.
A total of 34 patients were diagnosed with functional constipation according to the definition of the modified Rome II criteria. divided into 3 groups (placebo, ear mushrooms alone, and ear mushrooms with additives including cascara sagrada, etc.).
Numbers of bowel movements, straining, sense of incomplete evacuation, stool consistency, satisfactory relief, abdominal pain/discomfort, and colon transit time were evaluated and analyzed before, during, and after the treatment.
Both ear mushrooms alone and ear mushrooms with additives significantly improved a number of bowel movements, straining, sense of incomplete evacuation.
Furthermore, both applications also improved stool consistency and satisfactory relief in the participants.
Compared to the use of ear mushrooms alone, adding herbal Cascara Sagrada was found to be more effective in the improvement of constipation.
However, compared to no side effects on the use of ear mushrooms, adding herbal Cascara Sagrada may induce mild gastrointestinal discomfort in some patients.
The results clearly suggested that ear mushrooms combined with herbal Cascara Sagrada and fiber may have a strong inhibition against the development and chronic constipation with no serious effects.
Taken together, herbal Cascara Sagrada may be used alone or combined with other anti-constipation functional foods for the prevention and treatment of chronic constipation with little or no side effects.
However, due to the limitation of the small sample size, we suggested that confirmation by a large sample and multicenter human study is necessary before declaring the effective use of herbal Cascara Sagrada and its combination for the treatment of constipation.

The Effects of Maternal Coffee Intake Regularly on the Risk of #SpontaneousAbortion (SAB), According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
The risk of spontaneous abortion (SAB) is increased substantially in excessive coffee women during pregnancy, some studies suggested.
Spontaneous abortion is a clinically recognized pregnancy loss within 20 weeks of gestation.
According to the World Organization of Health, fetus expulsion or extraction, weighing 500 g or less. are considered spontaneous abortions.
Believe it or not, spontaneous abortion happens quite commonly in the early stage of pregnancy and the risk is decreased substantially with increasing gestational age.
Genetically, the causes of spontaneous abortion (SAB) are associated with the mutation of genes inherited from the parents. researchers found that genes that cause the alternation of intrauterine fetal demise, blighted ovum, and partial and molar pregnancy are the most common forms of spontaneous abortion.
Externally, maternal age, poor diet, excessive use of alcohol, smoking, untreated thyroid disease uncontrolled diabetes, use of certain medications, and the physical problem with reproductive organs are associated with a significant risk of the incidence.
Furthermore, women who have a family history and previous miscarriages are also at a higher risk of the onset of spontaneous abortion (SAB).
Coffee, one of the most popular and social beverages worldwide, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
In a case-controlled study conducted in Milan of 561 (72%) cases of spontaneous abortion and 877 (57%) controls, coffee drinking during the first trimester of the index pregnancy with healthy women who gave birth at term (> 37 weeks gestation) to healthy infants as control, researchers found that
* Coffee intake of 1, 2, or 3, and 4 or more cups of coffee per day, are associated with an increase in the risk of 1.2, 1.8, and 4.0, respectively compared to non-drinkers.
* The risk of pregnancy loss also is associated with the duration of years of coffee drinking. The estimated multivariate odds ratios of spontaneous abortion were 1.1 compared to the non-coffee intake group.
Furthermore, in the evaluated effect of caffeine on the influence of miscarriage researchers at the Boston University School of Public Health, conducted a prospective cohort study that included 5132 Danish women planning pregnancy, enrolled from 2007 to 2010, after carefully assessing the returned beverage consumption on questionnaires, researchers found that spontaneous abortion (SAB) is 1.62 higher in women consumed more than 300 mg/day of caffeine per day, in compared to 1.09 in women who consume <100 mg/day.
Specifically, women with a daily intake of caffeine of
* <100 mg/day showed a materially associated SAB risk of 1.09.
* 100-199mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 0,89.
* 200-299mg/day showed a materially associated SAB risk of 1.33.
Interestingly, in prospective cohort study included 15,590 pregnancies from 11,072 women with no history of SAB in the Nurses' Health Study II (1991-2009) with beverage intake assessed every 4 years using a validated questionnaire in case pregnancies lost spontaneously at <20 weeks gestation, total coffee intake had a positive, linear association with SAB.
Compared to non-pre-pregnancy coffee intake, the risk of SAB increased by 20% for women consuming ≥4 servings/day.
More importantly, Dr. Gaskins AJ, the lead author said, "Pre-pregnancy coffee consumption at levels ≥4 servings/day is associated with increased risk of SAB, particularly at weeks 8-19".
Taken together, there is no doubt that caffeinated coffee may contribute to a relative risk of spontaneous abortion (SAB) for women consuming more than 4 cups per day.
Women who are pregnant between 12 to 20 weeks of gestation with excessive coffee intake habits are recommended to consult with their doctors.

#Phytochemical #Dithiolthiones Kill #CervicalCancer Cells Through Selective Cytotoxic Activity, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a bioactive compound isolated from cruciferous vegetables for the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer with no side effects, according to studies.
The cervix is an opening passage in the center of the ectocervix, that connects the uterus to the vagina in female reproductive organs. The cervix acts as a transition area for the vaginal lining (squamous epithelium) to change to uterus type (columnar epithelium) through the transitional area (squamous columnar epithelium) to host the development of the fetus.
Cervical cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular and disordered cell growth in the tissue of the cervix.
Most cases of cervical cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the cervix. At the early stage, most patients do not experience any symptoms.
However, at the later stage, the overgrowth tumor may suppress the nearby blood vessels and nerve tissue, leading to abnormal bleeding and severe abdominal pain.
At this stage, cancerous cells from the cervix also can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organ, through lymph and blood circulation, causing secondary metastasis.
Most common cervical metastasis includes the vagina, the uterus, the uterus, tissue nearby lymph nodes in the pelvis, the back of the abdomen tissue, and ligaments around the cervix and uterus
According to the statistic, cervical cancer is most often diagnosed between the ages of 35 and 44 and only 15% of cervical cancers are diagnosed in women over age 65.
The five years survival rate of invasive cervical cancer is 92% if diagnosed in the early stages.
What causes cervical cells' DNA alternation? Researchers do not know. But researchers do know that immune system deficiency, smoking, the increase in age, long-term use of oral contraceptives, and exposure to diethylstilbestrol are some of the prevalent risk factors associated with the onset of the disease.
Some researchers also suggested women who have several sexual partners or often change of sexual partners are at increased risk of infected by the Human papillomavirus (HPV), one of the primary cause of cervical cancer.
Dr. Diane Cooper, the lead scientist in the cancer research in the examine the sexual activity in the risk of cervical cancer of South African women wrote, "cervical cancer risk is associated with increased sexual activity. Initiatives to encourage later commencement of sex, and limiting the number of sexual partners would have a favorable impact on the risk of cancer of the cervix and other sexually transmitted infections".
These results clearly suggested that women who are sexually active and have a number of sexual partners should take extreme precautions to protect themselves against HPV infection.
Dithiolthiones are phytochemicals in the class of Organosulfides, found abundantly in cruciferous vegetables, garden sorrel, horseradish, etc.
In finding natural chemoprevention which holds great potential for cancer management as lower, clinically tolerable doses of individual agents for the treatment of cervical cancer, the cancer team at the Manipal University examined the effect of combination treatment of sulforaphane (SFN) and eugenol on HeLa cells.
Injection with variable dose combinations of SFN and eugenol showed a significant effect in inducing cell cytotoxicity and apoptosis at the lower and synergistic effect at higher sub-lethal doses to the cancer cells.
Futhermore, the application of chemo drugs gemcitabine combined with the low- and high-dose of SFN combinations showed no significant cell death at lower doses compared to that of cell cytotoxicity in gemcitabine alone.
These results clearly suggested that SFN can only elevate the efficiency and lower the dose of certain chemo drugs which act on certain pathways in inducing cytotoxicity and cell death with decreasing side effects.
Additional examination of the effect of SFN and eugenol combinations researchers found that SFN significantly inhibits the expression of the proteins associated with cell proliferation and production of inflammatory cytokines.
Dr. Hussain A, the lead scientist in the final report wrote, "2 (or more) chemopreventive agents can act antagonistically or synergistically necessitating elucidation of possible mechanistic interactions for favorable and reliable outcomes of dietary components in the field of cancer prevention".
Compared to chemo drugs, injection of sulforaphane alone exerted a strong effect in inducing dose-dependent selective cytotoxicity in HeLa cells without causing harm to the to normal cells.
The finding emphasized that the bioactive compound processes a safe cytotoxicity profile compared to conventional chemo medicine.
Also, sulforaphane alone was found to expresse its efficacy through analysis of genes similar to that of SFN and eugenol combination.
In human cervical carcinoma HeLa and hepatocarcinoma HepG2 cells, SFN inhibited the viability of both HeLa and HepG2 cells by inducing apoptosis, observed by the formation of apoptotic bodies and the accumulation of the sub-G1 phase.
In in-depth differentiation of SFN activity, researchers discovered that SFN not only induces cell death through the cancer cell cycle arrest but also activates the genes associated with the programming cell death and cell apoptosis by blocking the expression of cell proliferative proteins.
Taken together, sulforaphane SFN may be considered chemo and natural medicine for the prevention and combined with certain primary medicine for the treatment of cervical cancer with a reduced side effect through lowering the dose of the applied chemo drug.

#Coffee Exerts a Strong Effect in Decreasing Genotoxicity in Vivos, Scientists Say
Kyle J. Norton
Coffee and coffee caffeine may have a profound and positive effect on detoxification of genotoxicity, caused by chemo-drugs, radiation, and environmental chemicals toxins, some scientists suggested.
Genotoxicity is the activity of substances that can cause alternation of DNA of healthy cells to promote irregular cell growth. In other words, genotoxicity is an action that induces cancers.
Genotoxins are gene mutagens that have the property of genotoxicity, including radiation and chemical toxins.
Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
In rat liver and primary hepatocytes, regular intake of coffee daily illustrated an enormous effect in cellular antioxidant defenses through regulating exhibited enzymes involved mRNA and protein expression.
The study also suggested that coffee and coffee caffeine through the expression of detoxifying enzymes GSTs and AKR(in cellular detoxification) also demonstrated significant activity in reduced risk of genotoxicity and cytotoxicity caused by injection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1).
Dr. Cavin C, the lead author said, "The coffee-mediated stimulation of the Nrf2-ARE pathway resulting in increased endogenous defense mechanisms against electrophilic but also oxidative insults further support that coffee may be associated with protection against various types of chemical stresses".
(Please note that the Nrf2-ARE pathway is an indicator and modulator of oxidative stress)
Other, in the evaluated L5178Y mouse lymphoma cell line to assess the modulatory effects of coffee against genotoxicity induced by N-methyl-N-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG), researchers found that
* 3 doses of instant coffee caffeine injection displayed a decrease in genotoxicity following co-treatment of mouse lymphoma cells.
*. Coffee caffeine pre-treatment or co-treatment exhibited significant antigenotoxic effects against MNNG(an environmental carcinogen that causes DNA mutation) expression.
* Both caffeinated and decaffeinated instant coffee demonstrated a similar effect against genotoxicity in the experiment samples.
Dr. Abraham SK, the lead author said, " Results from three or five independent experiments demonstrated significant protective effects of caffeinated instant coffee against MNNG-induced DNA damage in the comet assay, a mutation at the Tk locus and chromosomal damage in the cytokinesis-block micronucleus test".
The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), in the study of the protective effects of coffee against somatic mutation and mitotic recombination induced by chemo drugs, cyclophosphamide (CPH)(, mitomycin C (MMC), and urethane (URE), using standard (ST) and high bioactivation (HB) crosses of the wing spot test in Drosophila melanogaster assays, suggested that in dose depending, coffee injection showed a strong effect in the genotoxicity of URE in the ST and the genetically susceptible HB cross as well as the genotoxicity caused by MMC application.
Dr. Abraham SK, the lead researcher said, "The magnitude of the protective effects of coffee against these three genotoxins was independent of the genotype of the larvae used for treatment, that is it was independent of the bioactivation capacity of these larvae".
The collective information showed definitive support for the use of coffee and coffee caffeine as a functional food in reduced risk against genotoxic expression, including side effects of chemo medicine used in the treatment of multi types of cancers.

#Ginger 6-gingerol Combined with #Wortmannin and #Cisplatin Exert Cytotoxicity Against #OralCancer Cells, Researchers Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Oral cancer also known as mouth cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the oral cavity, due to the alternation of cell DNA.
Most cases of oral cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of oral tissue.
However, at the advanced stage, oral cancer cells can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.
According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2018, approximately 51,540 people were diagnosed with oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer. The disease causes the death of an estimated 10,030 people.
The 5-year survival rate of oral cancer is 66%, including all stages.
Family history, smoking, alcohol drinking, being infected by the HPV virus, poor hygiene, and genetic preposition are some of the risk factors associated with the disease.
Some researchers suggested that oral sex may be one of the major prevalent risk factors involved in the development of oral cancer. Dr. Rajiv Saini in the examination of the connection of oral sex and oral cancer, wrote, "The diverse conduit in the oral cavity that provides as a gateway of exposure of infection from the oral cavity to bloodstream include any open sores, cuts, abrasions, or bleeding gum disease such as gingivitis and periodontitis".
"Accumulating molecular and pathologic evidence has strengthened the hypothesis that HPV infection could play a role in the etiology of some oral squamous cell carcinomas.
And, "To reduce the risk of infection during unprotected oral sex, limit exposure to sexual fluids and ensure that no cuts or lesions are present in the mouth or on the genitals. Good oral health, free from bleeding gums, lip sores, cuts, broken skin, and oral epithelium, enormously reduces the chances of transmission of infection among the partners indulging in oral sex".
These results strongly suggested people who perform oral sex before, during, and after sexual intercourse may be at risk of oral cancer due to being infected by the HPV virus.
Researchers on finding a natural compound for the inhibition of oral cancer examined the [6]-Shogaol ([6]-SHO), a major constituent of ginger anti-tumor activity.
[6]-SHO showed a significant effect in preventing oral squamous cell carcinoma by activating proapoptotic factors in vitro and in vivo experimental models.
In the inflammation and cell proliferation assays, injection of [6]-SHO inhibited the oral cancer cell line through cytotoxicity induced by the expression of proinflammatory cytokines, proteins associated with cell apoptosis, and anti-cell survival mechanisms.
Furthermore, in the oral cancer cells, oral administration of [6]-SHO strongly inhibited phosphorylation in stimulating the enzymes which carry energy to the cancer cells and enzymes in the degradation of cellular response to inflammation.
Dr. Annamalai G, the lead scientist said, " [6]-SHO is a novel functional agent capable of preventing DMBA-induced inflammation and cell proliferation associated tumorigenesis by modulating multiple signaling molecules".
Additionally, in order to reveal more information about 6-Gingerol anti-oral cancer properties, researchers investigated the compound in human oral (SCC4, KB) with or without wortmannin, rapamycin, and cisplatin.
6-Gingerol showed dose-dependent cytotoxicity in the oral cell line.
Combinations of 6-gingerol with wortmannin and cisplatin showed additive effects, while rapamycin, it showed 50% cytotoxicity equivalent to that of IC50 of 6-gingerol alone.
Treatment with 6-gingerol exhibited S-phase arrest in SCC4 cells. But 6-Gingerol, wortmannin, and rapamycin treatment showed almost two-fold higher expression of proteins associated with cancer cell apoptosis.
Dr. in the final report wrote," 6-gingerol appears to be a safe and potent chemotherapeutic/chemopreventive compound acting through cell cycle arrest and induction of apoptosis in human oral....cells".
Taken altogether, ginger processed bioactive ingredient 6-gingerol and [6]-Shogaol may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of oral cancer, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #FennelEssentialOil, Shows a Strong Anti Bacterial and Antioxidant Activities, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Fennel may be the next natural antibiotic used for the treatment of diseases caused by bacterial infection with no side effects, some researchers suggested.
Although most micro bacteria are harmless, some are pathogenic.
The most common bacterial pathogens that cause human diseases are Staphylococcus aureus and group A β-hemolytic streptococci.
According to a statistic provided by the World Health Organization, approximately, 50,000 men, women, and children are dying from infectious diseases every day worldwide.
Some researchers suggested that over span of decades or centuries, the epidemiological transition provides the central narrative of global health, including a reduction in mortality and the creation of larger and older populations in which the main causes of illness are chronic infectious diseases.
Although in comparison to the third world, the prevalence of infectious diseases in the UK has reduced dramatically over the last century, the rate of infectious diseases caused by pathogens still has a strong and negative impact on major health, social and economic issues.
Each year in the UK, infectious diseases were found to cause 576 days lost due to disability, out of 1000 population, according to statistics reported by Somerset Intelligence.
The most common symptoms of infectious diseases include fever, diarrhea, fatigue, tiredness, muscle aches,..... coughing. However, signs and symptoms may vary, depending on the pathogen, causing the infection.
Fennel is a species of Foeniculum Vulgare, belonging to the family Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the shores of the Mediterranean. It is now widely cultivated all around the globe to use as food and herb.
In the study to examine 3 different essential oils from grown cultivars of Egyptian fennel, researchers found that according to chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis, all chemical compounds isolated from 3 essential oil processing a strong antioxidant activity in inhibited pathogenic bacteria including two species of fungi, two species of Gram-negative and two species of Gram-positive bacteria.
Further analysis also suggested that the efficacy of compounds isolated from essential oil from 3 species of fennel was attributed to its free radical scavenging, anti-lipid peroxidation, and metal chelating properties.
Additionally, in the observation of essential oil's antioxidant activity from Foeniculum vulgare commercial aerial parts and fruits isolated by hydrodistillation, researchers at the Universidade do Algarve conducted an experiment, using different distillation times (30 min, 1 h, 2 h, and 3 h), and analyzed by GC and GC-MS in isolated chemical compounds from obtained fennel essential oil.
According to the analysis of the agar diffusion method. trans-Anethole (31-36%), alpha-pinene (14-20%), and limonene (11-13%), the main components of the essentials oil isolated from F. vulgare dried aerial parts and exerted a significant antibacterial activity compared to methyl chavicol (= estragole) (79-88%) dominant in the fruit oils.
In the DPPH method, according to the measurement of oxidative stress, plant essential oils showed better antioxidant activity compared to fruit oils.
Dr, Miguel MG, the lead author wrote at the end of the experimental report, "None of the oils showed a hydroxyl radical scavenging capacity > 50%, but they showed an ability to inhibit 5-lipoxygenase. The essential oils showed very low antimicrobial activity. In general, the essential oils isolated during 2 h were as effective, from the biological activity point of view, as those isolated during 3 h".
These results suggested that the effect of chemical compounds in inhibited pathogenic bacteria is isolated time dependable. Only those isolated for less than 2 hours are processed with strong antibacterial capability.

#Healthyfood #WhiteButtonMushroom Shows a Significsnt Effect Against #Prostatecancer by Decreasing Tumor Size and Cell Proliferation, Reserachers Say
Kyle J. Norton
White button mushrooms may be considered a functional food in inhibiting the early onset of prostate cancer, some scientists found.
Prostate cancer is cancer originating from the inner lining of the prostate gland caused by irregular prostate cell growth. Prostate cancer is slow-growing cancer. However, they can be deadly in the advanced stage by traveling a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs.
Most prostate cancers are found in the yearly annual physical exam, designed for the male at a higher risk of prostate cancer.
The exact causes of prostate cancer are unknown. However, the most common risk factor associated with the onset of the disease is a genetic mutation inherited from the parents. mutation of BRCA1 and BRCA2 reserves the function of tumor suppressor genes which normally repair mistakes in a cell's DNA to allow DNA mutation of the prostate cells.
Other risk factors also include age, family history, ethnicity, and long-term exposure to organ agents.
An unhealthy diet and lifestyle are also the most common preventable risk factors for the onset of the disease.
Dr. Sandaly O. S. Pacheco,, the lead author in the study "Food Habits, Lifestyle Factors, and Risk of Prostate Cancer in Central Argentina: A Case-Control Study Involving Self-Motivated Health Behavior Modifications after Diagnosis" wrote, "(Patients diagnosed with prostate cancer have) a greater mean consumption of meats and fats and lower intakes of fruits, green vegetables, cruciferous vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains than the controls (all p < 0.001)".
Therefore, reducing the intake of meats and fats, and actively engaging in dietary modifications with increased consumption of fish, fruits (including red fruits in prostate cancer), cruciferous vegetables, legumes, nuts, and black tea may reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
Mushroom is a standard name for white button mushroom, the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus produced above ground on soil or on its food source.
It is the genus A. Muscaria and belongs to the family Amanitaceae and has been recultivated in many cultures all over the world for food and health benefits.
Chemical constituents
Astraodorol, Psilocybin, Lectin, adustin, ribonuclease, nicotine, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-6-methylbenzoic acid, orsellinic acid, melleolide, ergosterol, genistein, daidzein, daucosterol, genistin, uracil, and D-mannitol.
In the evaluate the effects of white button mushroom extract and its major component, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on prostate cancer cell lines in vitro and mushroom extract in vivo, researchers found that* Injection of mushroom effectively inhibits cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner and induces apoptosis of the tested cell lines within 72 h of treatment.
* Application of CLA inhibits proliferation in the prostate cancer cell lines in vitro.
* DU145 and PC3 prostate tumor size and tumor cell proliferation are decreased in nude mice treated with mushroom extract, whereas tumor cell apoptosis was increased compared to pair-fed controls.* Application of mushroom in tested mice demonstrated significant changes in the tumor gene expression compared to controls, according to microarray analysis.
Dr. Adams LS the lead author said, "..., the anticancer potential of phytochemicals in mushroom extract both in vitro and in vivo and supports the recommendation of white button mushroom as a dietary component that may aid in the prevention of prostate cancer in men".
Furthermore, in the study to examine whether Mushrooms, an excellent source of dietary vitamin D2 the risk of prostate cancer, researchers launched a nested case-control study based on a 13-year follow-up of about 19,000 middle-aged men who attended the first screening visit within the Helsinki Heart Study and free of clinically verified prostate cancer at baseline.
According to record linkage with the files of the Finnish Cancer Registry, 149 prostate cancer cases were identified in the cohort.
After the assessment, researchers found that
* Prostate cancer risk, analyzed by quartiles of the 25-VD levels, was inversely related to 25-VD. In other words, men with a 25-VD concentration below the median are associated with the risk of prostate cancer compared to men with a 25-VD level above the median.
* The prostate cancer risk was highest among younger men (<52 years) at entry and low serum 25-VD (OR 3.1 nonadjusted and 3.5 adjusted).
* The mean age at diagnosis of the patients with a 25-VD concentration above the median was 1.8 years higher than that of patients with vitamin D below the median (63.1 vs 61.3 years).
These results strongly suggested that low levels of plasma 25-VD concentration are a prevalent risk factor for the onset of prostate cancer. In other words, increased consumption of mushrooms can increase and maintain blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D in a healthy range, thus reducing the risk of prostate cancer, regardless of age group.
