Maternal #Coffee Intake > 4 Cups/Day May Increase the Risk of Miscarriage and Non-Pre-Pregnancy Coffee Intake May Also Increased the Risk of SAB, Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

The risk of miscarrying is increased substantially in excessive (over 4 cups/day) coffee drinkers during pregnancy, an Asian study suggested.

A miscarriage, according to the definition is the loss of a fetus before the 20th week of pregnancy.

Believe it or not, according to medical literature, as many as 50% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage and over 80% of miscarriages are occurring within the first three months of pregnancy.

Some researchers suggested that women who carry mutation genes associated with chromosome gains and losses during embryonic development can lead to miscarriage or the failure of IVF treatments.

Other risk factors associated with an increased risk of miscarriage include aging Age. Women who are older than age 35, have previous miscarriages. smoking and excessive alcohol drinking before and during pregnancy have a higher risk of miscarriage compared to younger women,

Chronic medical health conditions such as obesity and uterine or cervical problems can also substantially increase the miscarriage risk.

Coffee, one of the most popular and social beverages all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In a case-controlled study conducted in Milan of 561 (72%) cases of spontaneous abortion and 877 (57%) controls, coffee drinking during the first trimester of the index pregnancy with healthy women who gave birth at term (> 37 weeks gestation) to healthy infants as control, researchers reported that the risk of miscarrying is classified as follows
* Coffee intake of 1, 2 or 3, and 4 or more cups of coffee per day are associated with an increased risk of 1.2, 1.8, and 4.0, respectively, compared to nondrinkers.

* The risk of pregnancy loss also is associated with the duration of years of coffee drinking. The estimated multivariate odds ratios of spontaneous abortion were 1.1 in comparison to the non-coffee intake group.

Furthermore, in the evaluated effect of caffeine on the influence of miscarriage researchers at the Boston University School of Public Health, conducted a prospective cohort study that included 5132 Danish women planning pregnancy, enrolled from 2007 to 2010, after carefully assessing the returned beverage consumption on questionnaires, researchers found that a significantly miscarried risk is 1.62 higher in women consuming more than 300 mg/day of caffeine per day, in compared to 1.09 in women who consume <100 mg/day. Specifically, women with a daily intake of caffeine of
* <100 mg/day showed a materially associated SAB risk of 1.09.

* 100-199mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 0,89.

* 200-299mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 1.33

Additionally, in prospective cohort study included 15,590 pregnancies from 11,072 women with no history of SAB in the Nurses' Health Study II (1991-2009) with beverage intake assessed every 4 years using a validated questionnaire in case pregnancies lost spontaneously at <20 weeks gestation, total coffee intake had a positive, linear association with SAB.

Compared to non-pre-pregnancy coffee intake, the risk of SAB increased by 20% for women consuming ≥4 servings/day.

More importantly, Dr. Gaskins AJ, the lead author said, "Pre-pregnancy coffee consumption at levels ≥4 servings/day is associated with the increased risk of SAB, particularly at weeks 8-19".

Taking together, there is no doubt that coffee may contribute to a relative risk of miscarrying for women consuming more than 4 cups per day.

Women who are pregnant between 12 to 28 weeks of gestation with excessive coffee intake habits are recommended to consult with their doctors.

#GreenTea Inhibits #BackPain Caused by Physical Damage to the Spine and Injured Nerve Cells, Researchers Show

By Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in ameliorated symptoms and treatment of chronic back pain, some scientists suggested.

Chronic back pain is a condition of musculoskeletal disorders(MSDs) of the spine that lasts more than 3 months, caused by various factors, including bone fractures, muscle or ligament injury, arthritis, and herniated discs. aging,...

Certain symptoms are associated with patients with chronic back pain, including loss of bowel or bladder control if the condition is in the lower back, numbness, tingling, or weakness in one or both legs and constant pain that gets worse at night.

According to the statistic provided by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare,

* In 2014–15, an estimated 3.7 million Australians (16%, or 1 in 6 people) had chronic back problems.

* The prevalence of the condition increases with age up before declining slightly in aged 75 and over.

*More than three-quarters (77%) of people with chronic back problems were of working age (15–64), and

* In 2008–09, around 1.8% of total healthcare expenditure in Australia ($1.2 billion) was attributed to back problems, causing a significant burden to the economy in the country.

Some researchers in the finding of mutated genes which have a strong influence on the onset of chronic back pain suggested, " ...only a minority of the genetic influences was caused by genes affecting disc degeneration suggesting that genes involved in pain perception, signaling, and psychological processing (Foulkes and Wood 2008), and genetic variants of immune genes (Solovieva et al. 2004b) contribute to the proportion of the heritability of chronic back pain".

These results indicated that genetic mutation inherited from the parent may have a minor effect in contributing to the early development of the condition.

Green tea is a precious drink that processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

Application of biologically active polyphenol epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) demonstrated a significant effect in reduced back pain by facilitating the anti-inflammatory and anti-catabolic activity in patients with intervertebral disc (IVD) disease due to age-related changes in the adult disc in the induction of back pain.

According to the study by the Institute for Biomechanics (D-HEST), ETH Zurich ingestion of green tea EGCG on back pain patients, human IVD cells isolated from patients undergoing surgery due to degenerative disc disease (n = 34) and cultured in 2D or 3D indicated that the phytochemical inhibited levels of inflammatory response activated by IL-1β, a cytokine protein produced by macrophages, with function in contributing the inflammatory pain hypersensitivity in the site of infection observed by the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), western blotting, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), immunofluorescence and transcription factor assay.

Furthermore, the application also displayed a strong effect on reducing the expression of
p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases in mediated inflammatory factors of IL-1β in response to stress stimuli.

Also, according to the Institute for Biomechanics (D-HEST), in the investigation of the analgesic properties of EGCG, by the von Frey filament test in Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 60), green tea EGCG injection also significantly inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators as expressed in above and reduced matrix metalloproteinases which have been found to associate to pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and other proteins to regulate varied aspects of inflammation and immunity.

Moreover, in the radiculopathy pain component, researchers also indicated that EGCG inhibited the inflammation in the precipitated back pain through modulating the activity of IRAK-1 in glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle and p38, c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK) and nuclear factor NF-κB in response to stress stimuli.

Some researchers indicated that back pain may also be induced by muscle degeneration and impairment of nerve injury, leading to increased levels of reactive oxygen species in the induction of tissue apoptosis.

In the crushing of the sciatic nerve-induced back pain in a tested animal, the application of green tea EGCG improved motor function in the toe spread and foot positioning and gained in the percentage motor deficit.

More importantly, EGCG expressed a significant effect in the recovery of sensory innervation in neuropathic pain-like syndrome and improved muscle tissues from injured limbs with severe histopathological alterations at the end of week 3 post-surgery in treated animals.

According to the RT-PCR assay, EGCG treatment also normalized the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, the abnormal ratio of the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio has been found to associate with the induction of nerve cell apoptosis as well as inhibiting levels of p53 with function in regulated the cell death cycle at days 3 and 7 post-surgery.

These results demonstrated an important effect of green tea EGCG in enhanced functional recovery, by protecting muscle fibers from cellular death and improving morphological recovery in the skeletal muscle after nerve injuries.

However, in the study of caffeine activity in the modulation of pain perception in chronic pain states of 131 patients with chronic low back pain (64 men and 67 women; mean age = 42.1 years; mean duration of pain = 6.1 years) referred to a multidisciplinary pain clinic over a 2-year period, researchers found that caffeine is not related to the global experience of pain and disability in patients with chronic low back pain, although high caffeine use may be embedded in the context of other unhealthy lifestyle behaviors.

Taken together, green tea and its bioactive component epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) may be considered functional foods in reduced back pain caused by physical damage to the spine and injured nerve cells.

Intake of green tea supplements should be taken with exceptional care as some cases of liver acute toxicity have been reported in the medical literature.

#SeedExtract of #Celery Demonstrates a Liver Protective Effect Against Toxins-Induced #Hepatocarcinogenesis, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists in the cancer research team have found a functional vegetable which may be the next pharmaceutical target to discover the chemotherapy for treatment of liver cancer.

Liver cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably that starts on the surface of the inner lining of liver tissue as the result of an alternation of DNA.

At the early stage of liver cancer, most patients do not experience any symptoms. However, as cancer continues to grow, in some stages, it will suppress the nearby nerve cell to facilitate local pain and discomfort.

At the advanced stage, the liver cancerous cell can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs through the circulation of blood and fluids.

Researchers do not know why the liver cells of some people are susceptible to DNA alternation, while others do not, even if they have the same health conditions, family history, and similar diet patterns.

Some researchers suggested that people who carry the infectious liver virus are associated with a major risk of liver cancer onset.

Researchers at the cancer program at the joint study led by the Technical University of Munich/Helmholtz Zentrum München in the confirmation of hepatitis B and C viruses risk of acute and chronic infections that can lead to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) showed that the hepatitis B and C besides contributing to the development of liver cancer, they also cause over 1.3 million deaths per year worldwide.

According to the statistic, liver cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, with HCC representing approximately 90% of all primary liver cancer cases.

Furthermore, patients who carry hepatitis B, and C are at an increased risk of liver cirrhosis, the early stage of liver cancer.

Moreover, in the reassessment of the relationship between the risk of liver cancer in hepatitis B and C carrier patients, researchers found that the majority of viral-associated HCC patients developed liver cirrhosis before liver cancer onset, however, hepatitis B virus infection can promote HCC development without the prior end-stage liver disease.

Therefore, if you are a carrier of hepatitis B and C, please make sure that you know how to protect yourself against the risk of liver cancer.

Some researchers suggested the best protection for people who have been recently exposed to the hepatitis B and C virus and are not vaccinated, are usually given the vaccine along with a shot of hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG) and a combination of antiviral drugs, respectively.

Celery is a species of Apium graveolens, belonging to the family Apiaceae.

The vegetable is cultivated all around the globe as a vegetable. Celery can grow to 1/2 m tall with stalks (leaf on the top) arranged in a conical shape joined at a common base.

Major phytochemicals found in celery include 3-n-butylphthalide, acetylenic, coumarins, phenolic acids, limonene, phthalides, and apigenin.

In the study to reaffirm the liver protective effect of celery seed, researchers launched an investigation to examine the anti-liver cancer activity of a methanolic extract of Apium graveolens seeds (celery seeds) on positive foci of gamma-GT in the liver of Wistar rats.

Application of celery seed extracts demonstrated a liver protective effect in a dose-dependent against toxins-induced hepatocarcinogenesis and gamma-GT positive foci in the rat treatment group.

5 days of pretreatment of celery seeds extracts stimulated the production of antioxidant enzymes in the host such as glutathione (GSH) and detoxifying enzymes such as quinone reductase (QR), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and serum gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) which were suppressed by the injection of toxins.

Dr. Sultana S, the lead author said, "A. graveolens is a potent plant against experimentally induced hepatocarcinogenesis in Wistar rats".

Furthermore, in the study of the liver protective effects of perillyl alcohol, a monoterpene isolated from the essential oils of lavendin, peppermint, spearmint, cherries, celery seeds, and several other plants, the researchers found that
* Application of perillyl alcohol not only displays a significant activity against liver cancer but also inhibits the progression of pancreatic and mammary tumors.

* Perillyl alcohol actively induces apoptosis in liver tumor cells without affecting normal cells.

* Perillyl alcohol reverts tumor cells back to a differentiated state.

* Further differentiation indicated that Perillyl alcohol exerts the liver protective effect through activating the production of the protein responsible for programming cell death and deactivating the protein with function in pro-cellular survival.

Taken altogether, celery may be considered a functional food for the prevention of liver cancer and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of liver cancer, depending on the large human sample size and multi-center studies.

#Carrots Inhibit Oxidative Stress Against the Onset of #Hyperglycemia and #Prediabes Through Their Antioxidant Activities, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Carrots may have a profound and positive effect in normalizing the levels of sugar in the blood, some scientists suggested.
Hyperglycemia is a condition characterized by abnormally high levels of plasma glucose circulating in the blood.

The syndrome does not cause any symptoms until the levels of sugar are elevated above 180 to 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), or 10 to 11 millimoles per liter (mmol/L).

Hyperglycemia is considered an early culprit for the onset of type 2 diabetes. Untreated managed type 1 and 2 diabetes that causes prolonged periods of high blood glucose may induce some unpredictable complications, such as nerve, kidney, foot, and eye damage.

If you are diabetic and have fasted and after meal fasting glucose of higher than 130 mg/dL and over 140 mg/dL respectively, you are considered to have the onset of hyperglycemia.

The causes of hyperglycemia are associated with a number of factors. However, researchers as of today, do not know why people with the same health condition and family history, are susceptible to the risk of the condition, while others do not.

Some researchers suggested that people who have diabetes skip or forget their insulin or oral glucose-lowering medicine, eat far more carbohydrates compared to the normal intake of insulin, and don't take part in the daily exercise are most dangerous to have hyperglycemia.

Compared to hyperglycemia, prediabetes is a condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal but lower than those of diabetics.

If you are diabetic, and experiencing symptoms of fruity-smelling breath, persistent gastrointestinal discomforts, shortness of breath, and dry mouth, you have hyperglycemia. Please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

In serious cases, some diabetes with hyperglycemia also experience symptoms of confusion, stomach pain, and coma.

Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belonging to the family Apiaceae, native to Asia and Europe.

In the study to investigate the relationship between hyperglycemia and both serum carotenoids and intake of vegetables and fruits in a total of 284 subjects, 133 with a history of diabetes mellitus or 151 with hyperglycemia diagnosed using a 5.6% cutoff value for hemoglobin A1c (High HbA1c group, n = 151) from among inhabitants of a rural area in Hokkaido, Japan, match with healthy control researchers found that

* The odds ratio (OR) for high HbA1c was 0.49 (95% confidence interval: 0.29-0.85) on high intake frequency of carrot and pumpkin.

* There are no significant relationships between high HbA1c and intake frequencies of other vegetables and fruits.

These results suggested that carrots and pumpkins have a positive effect in reducing the levels of blood glucose in patients with high HbA1c, compared to the intake of other fruits and vegetables.

Furthermore, in the evaluation of serum carotenoid levels among residents with hyperglycemia who were screened in a health check-up program for the inhabitants living in a rural area of Hokkaido compared with those with normal levels, researchers showed that
* Serum levels of alpha, beta-carotenes, and cryptoxanthin were lower among those with high HbA1c newly detected than among those with a normal level.

* Observation on diabetics who have already been under control in the clinic, showed no significant differences in serum levels of carotenoids, or lipids such as total cholesterol and TBARS compared to other groups

The information indicated that serum carotenoid levels can be used as an indicator of food intake and oxidative stress for the prediabetic condition since newly detected hyperglycemia tends to show lower serum antioxidant levels such as beta-carotene, and higher serum lipid peroxide levels.
Interestingly, researchers after taking other factors into account said, " males who currently smoked and drank alcohol, the intake frequency of carrot or pumpkin was significantly lower for those with high HbA1c than for the others".

Taken together, people who have diabetes and are at higher risk may want to add a portion of carrots into their daily diet as a preventive measure.

Since the studies quoted in this article are observational bases, therefore, further data collection on large example size and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of carrot's anti-hyperglycemic possibilities.

#Asparagus Combined with #Cisplatin Boost and Restore both Cellular and Humoral Immunity Against #ImmuneDiseases, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Asparagus may have profound and potential effect in reducing the risk of infection caused by microorganisms and preventing the overactive immune system to launch an attack on the body tissue, mistakenly, some scientists suggested.

The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprise the body's defense system against diseases.

The immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections. Besides foods and nutritional supplements, herbs also play an important role in helping the immune system defend against viruses and bacteria attacks.

Immunomodulatory activity is an action that improves the underactive immune function that is susceptible to the invasion of the foreign microorganism and inhibits the overactive immune system that causes autoimmune diseases.

In other words, the immunomodulatory activity involved in antimicrobial agents is to modulate the genes involved in immune reactions, or of the neurohormonal system which regulates immune functions and any toxic or immunotoxic effects such as allergic reactions or destruction of immune effectors, that may cause harm to the body or interfere with the body normal function.

Dr. Marie-Thérèse Labro in the study "Immunomodulatory Effects of Antimicrobial Agents. Part I"
with the assessment of the battle against infections, microorganisms are still a threat to mankind. said, "We have now entered the third era of anti-infective strategy, which intends to favor the interplay between active molecules and the immune system. The first part of this review focuses on the potential immunomodulating properties of anti-infective agents, beginning with antibacterial and antiviral agents".

Truly, regardless of hundreds of antibacterial medicine were produced by mankind, the major concerns remain about the emergence of resistant and multidrug-resistant pathogens,

The doctor continued, "(Particularly), the antiviral drug armamentarium is comprised of only a few dozen of compounds which are highly pathogen-specific, and resistance is also a concern".

Therefore, improving the immune function today still is the best method for reducing the risk of infection and autoimmune diseases

Asparagus is a flowering plant, belonging to the species genus Asparagus, native to the western coasts of northern Spain, north to Ireland, Great Britain, northwest Germany, northern Africa, and western Asia.

The plant and food have been used from early times as a vegetable and medicine, because of their delicate flavor and diuretic properties.

In the investigation of whether Asparagus racemosus Linn. (Fam. Liliaceae) an ethnopharmacologically acclaimed Ayurvedic medicinal plant processes the immunomodulatory effect against pathogens, researchers at the Centre for Phytochemistry and Pharmacology, by examining the action of an aqueous extract from the plant.

Observation of the immunoreactivity after injecting the extract into the human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) isolated from whole blood on a ficoll-hypaque density gradient, showed a dose-dependent in stimulating the immune NK cell activity with a peak increase of 16.9±4.4% at 5.6 μg/ml.

Further differentiation suggested that ARP can achieve a higher stimulatory immune activity of 51.8±1.2% at 25 μg/ml.

These results suggested that A. racemosus processed an immune modulatory effect in potentiating the NK cell activity of the immune system.

Some researchers concerned the current drug efficacies that suppress the immune function during the course of infection, conducted a study with an aim to find a natural compound with similar efficacy but no side effects.

The combination of Asparagus racemosus, an immunomodulatory drug, in combination with cisplatin against Leishmania donovani was used in the testing against parasite-infected BALB/c mice.

According to the final report, infection of A. racemosus at a dose of 650 mg/kg b.wt./day for 15 days, in combination with cisplatin at the dose of 5 mg/kg b.wt./day for 5 days, intraperitoneally exerted a significant effect in enhancing the clearance of parasites as determined by Giemsa-stained liver impression smears.

Moreover, Besides having better killing activity, the combination group achieved increased production of disease-resolving Th-1 response (IFN-gamma, IL-2) that has a function in killing intracellular parasites bacteria and viruses, heightened DTH (delayed type hypersensitivity) response and augmented levels of antibody IgG2a.

The findings may suggest that A. racemosus in combination with cisplatin in L. donovani-infected BALB/c mice boosted and restored both cellular and humoral immunity.

Importantly, after taking into account co and confounders, Dr. Sachdeva H, the lead author added, "Moreover, A. racemosus in combination with cisplatin not only provided enhanced protective immune response but also resulted in remarkably improved kidney and liver function tests as manifested by normal levels of SGOT, SGPT, alkaline phosphatase, creatinine and urea in blood plasma with normal histological observations as compared to only cisplatin-treated L. donovani infected BALB/c mice".

Taken all together, Asparagus used alone or in combination with cisplatin in L. donovani may be considered a primary Immunomodulatory therapy for the treatment of people with immune diseases.

However, further data collection on large example size and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of asparagus immunomodulatory possibilities.

#Caffeinated Coffee Processes Anti Acute and Chronic Inflammatory Activity through Inhibiting the Production of ProinflammatoryCytokines, Scientists Find

Kyle J. Norton

Intake of coffee daily and regularly has a profound effect on reduced inflammatory expression, a renowned institute study suggested.

Inflammation is a natural reaction of the immune system in protecting the body against foreign invasion and after injury and damage to tissues or organs.

Most cases of acute inflammation are systemic immune responses occurred when the body's white blood cells release chemicals into the blood or injured tissues to protect your body against infection caused by the foreign invasion through the stimulated production of inflammatory cytokines.

Under normal conditions, cytokines IL-6 and IL10 exert anti-inflammatory activity against inflammation by inhibition of tumor necrosis factor (TNF), and IL-1 production by macrophages. However, in the case of bodily injury or damage, cytokines IL-6 and IL10 can switch promptly to pro-inflammatory cytokines for maximum protection of the body against infection,

However, in some cases, overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines over a prolonged period of time not only can cause damage to cells and tissue of the infectious site but also can injure the nearby healthy cells and tissue, leading to abnormal tissue healing such as scars and a high degree of cell death.

Conventional medicine such as prescription NSAIDs and pain relief, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) and naproxen sodium (Aleve) may be effective in reducing pain and acute inflammation. However, they can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke and side effects of dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea, constipation, and seizures.

If you are depended totally on conventional medicine for the treatment of inflammation, please make sure you know the risks and side effects.

Chronic inflammation is an inflammation that lasts serval months, sometimes years.

Researchers do not the exact cause of chronic inflammation, but they do know that it is caused by the: failure of the immune system to completely eliminate substances that cause acute inflammation or immune system mistakenly a normal healthy tissue as a pathogen and attacking them.

Coffee has become a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In the analysis to clarify the beneficial effects of caffeine consumption on human health and behavior, the mechanisms against the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative diseases, researchers at the joint study led by the University of Coimbra found that coffee caffeine reduced the onset and progression of neurodegenerative diseases, through controlling microglia(cells in the brain and spinal cord) reactivity and neuroinflammation.

Dr. Madeira MH, the lead researchers said, "Caffeine controls microglia-mediated neuroinflammatory response associated with the majority of neurodegenerative conditions".

Interestingly, the study to evaluate the Spent coffee grounds (SCG) anti-inflammatory effects conducted lead by the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro, suggested that the efficacy of SCG in reducing the risk of inflammation is probably associated with high contents of antioxidants such as phenolic compounds, and fermentability by the human gut flora, in regulating the pro-inflammatory expressions, even with roasting effect in reduced total phenolic contents of SCG in influenced colonic fermentation.

After considering all other factors, the study strongly insisted, "Spent coffee grounds (SCG), rich in dietary fiber can be fermented by colon microbiota producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) with the ability to prevent inflammation".

More importantly, in the examined numbers of prospective and retrospective cohort studies, coffee consumption against the relative risk of developing a major depressive disorder in humans, caffeine and phytochemicals such as chlorogenic acid, ferulic acid, and caffeic acid, all important constituents of coffee, showed to the attenuated risk of depression through mediated inflammation, in vitro and in vivo.

Dr. Hall S, the lead author said, "The ability of bioactive coffee constituents to modulate the parameters of neuroinflammation has been shown with caffeine having strong antioxidant properties in vitro, chlorogenic acid and the caffeic acid having strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in vitro and ferulic acid having activities in vivo animal models of depression".

Taking together, there is no doubt that coffee intake daily and regularly has a significant effect in reducing the risk of inflammation through overexpression of the presence of bioactive constituents.

#Herbal #Butterbur Exerts Anti Inflammation, Eosinophil Recruitment, and Mucus Hyperproduction Against #Asthma, Researchers

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a medicinal plant for the prevention and treatment of asthma with no side effects, according to studies.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease, affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing.

Most signs and symptoms of asthma are triggered by exposure to various irritants and substances such as allergens.

Researchers do not know why some people are prone to the substances that trigger the symptoms of asthma while others do not, even if they process the same health conditions in the same family.

According to the American Lung Association, there are many risk factors can trigger the onset of the diseases, including respiratory problems during infancy and childhood such as wheezing, children who experience viral respiratory infections, children who have an allergic condition, such as atopic dermatitis (eczema) or allergic rhinitis (hay fever), can also develop asthma.

The most preventable risk factors that cause the onset of adult asthma are smoking and obesity. Dr. Chen Y and colleagues at the University of Ottawa in the investigation of the risk of asthma in among female Canadians wrote, "The prevalence of asthma was 10.4% for males and 11.2% for females aged 12-24 years. Among the subjects aged 25 years or more, the prevalence varied from 4.1% to 5.8% for men and from 4.9% to 6.4% for women".

And, "Female smokers demonstrated a 1.7-fold increase in the prevalence of asthma compared with female nonsmokers" and " the prevalence of asthma increased with increasing body mass index in females".

The results strongly suggested that if you are female and you don't want to have asthma, you must lose weight and quit smoking.

Butterbur, found in wet, marshy, damp land, including wetlands, riversides, forests, etc., is a creeping underground plant, genus Petasites of 15 -20 species, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to the Northern Hemisphere.

It has been used in herbal medicine used as a pain reliever in the digestive system, including the stomach, bile ducts, duodenum, etc.

The chemical constituents of Butterbur include Petioles, petasitene and pethybrene, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-6''-O-acetylglucoside, and rutin, caffeic acid, alkaloids, S-petasin, and iso-S-petasin, etc.

With an aim to find a natural remedy for the treatment of asthma with no side effects, researchers examine the phytoceuticals (non-nutritional but beneficial plant chemicals) used as a pharmacotherapy for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Recently, herbal butterbur has been found to benefit and improve treatments for lung disease, particularly in that airway inflammatory diseases, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD.

Ovalbumin (OVA) immunized BALB/c mice selected for the experiment were given intranasally together with antigen challenge in the murine model of allergic airway disease (asthma)

The analysis of the inflammatory and immune parameters in the lung suggested FET treated mice exerted a significant effect in inhibiting the allergic response.

Furthermore, PET also inhibited airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and eosinophil recruitment into the bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid upon allergen challenge observed by a medical procedure in which a bronchoscope is passed through the mouth or nose into the lungs but had no effect in the saline control mice.

According to the reading eosinophilic activation marker, PET at a concentration of 100 microg strongly lowered the levels of serum eosinophil peroxidase (EPO).

These results suggested inflammation, eosinophil recruitment, and mucus hyperproduction are significantly decreased in the lung with the administration of 100 microg PET.

Moreover, at the concentration of 30 microg PET, researchers found that airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and inflammation of treated mice associated with the production of inflammatory cytokines reduced (IL-4, IL-5) and RANTES production involved the mediation of acute and chronic inflammation are strongly reduced without affecting the expression of IgE and eotaxin serum levels.

Where Eotaxin is a small protein produced in the lungs of asthmatic patients.

The finding indicated PET inhibited the expression of asthma by decreasing the airway hyperresponsiveness, airway inflammation, eosinophil recruitment, and mucus hyperproduction of the asthmatic mice, in a dose-dependent manner.

Taken altogether, herbal butterbur may be considered a natural remedy for the prevention and combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of asthma and COPD with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of the large sample size and multicenter human study.
