Chamomile processed with a high amount of antioxidants may have a profound and positive effect on reducing the risk and treatment of skin cancer, according to studies.
Skin cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the skin tissues due to the alternation of cell DNA.
Most cases of skin cancer begin in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of skin tissues. However, at the advanced stage, the tumor cells can travel a distance away from the skin to infect other healthy tissue and organs, through lymph and blood, leading to secondary metastasis.
Organs or system which is vulnerable to skin metastasis is lymph, lung, and liver.
Although family and personal history, history of sunburn, excessive sun exposure, and people who live in sunny or high-altitude climates are associated with the risks of skin cancer, some researchers suggested that skin cancer in the Western world may be attributed to the misunderstanding the risk of sun exposure and the risk of unhealthy skin, as we still can see lots of naked skin exposed to sunlight during the Summer months in the parks.
According to the statistic, 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. An estimated 4.3 million cases of BCC are diagnosed in the U.S. each year. causing the death of more than 3,000 people.
Dr. Honnavara N Ananthaswamy in the concern the sunlight and the risk of skin cancer wrote, " Laboratory studies have shown that UV-B region of the solar spectrum is responsible for this effect. The first step in UV skin carcinogenesis involves the induction of DNA damage".
And, "Occasional mistakes during the repair of this damage lead to the incorporation of wrong bases into the genetic material. The DNA damage that is left unrepaired may also disrupt cellular processes by obstructing the DNA and RNA synthesizing machinery and introducing wrong bases into the DNA. These types of mistakes often result in mutation leading to loss or inappropriate expression of affected genes".
The finding indicated the progression of skin cancer in long-term UV exposure and how the UV light induces the change of skin cells' DNA.
Chamomile is also known as camomile, the common name of many species of daisy-like plants in the family Asteraceae. The herb has been used in traditional medicine as antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituents and for the treatment of menstrual cramps and sleep disorders, reduce cramping and spastic pain in the bowels, relieve excessive gas and bloating in the intestine, etc.
Researchers on finding a herbal medicine for the treatment of skin cancer which not only continues to rise but also accounts for approximately 40% of all cancers reported in the United States and 9,500 deaths per year, examined the effects of chamomile against reactive oxygen species (ROS) type free radicals in the initiation of skin cancer and aging.
Compared to other herbal medicines used in the study, chamomile demonstrated skin protective effects against oxidative stress through its antioxidant activity.
In vitro, chamomile modulated the hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced upregulation of ROS free radicals in normal human skin fibroblasts.
According to the flow cytometry-based assay, the free radical inhibition of chamomile was attributed to a single ingredient but varying concentrations of herbal chamomile natural components.
In the additional investigation of the chamomile anti-skin cancer activity, researchers examined the bioactive compound Apigenin, a major active compound from herbal chamomile which was previously found to inhibit chemically induced ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity and skin tumor promotion.
Increased of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) was associated with the expression of oxidative stress in animal chemical induction.
After mouse skin carcinogenesis was induced by exposure to a total dose of 40 J/cm2 UVB over 11 weeks, application of Apigenin (5 mumoles/200 microliters DMSO: acetone, 1:9) treatment from 12 hours before until 1 hour following UVA/B exposure was effective in inhibition (25-45% inhibition) of ODC activity measured at 28 hours following UVA/B exposure.
Treatment with 10 mumoles apigenin in 200 microliters DMSO: acetone (1:9) prior to each UVB exposure showed a reduction in cancer incidence (52% inhibition) and an increase in tumor-free survival, compared to control mice.
Interestingly, in salmon sperm, Apigenin (0-100 microM) did not prevent the production of photoproducts to cause damage to the cell DNA.
The results strongly suggested that Apigenin inhibited UVA/B-induced ODC activity or UVB-induced skin carcinogenesis through many unknown mechanisms instead of simply absorbing ultraviolet light or decreasing DNA damage.
Taken together, herbal chamomile may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of skin cancer.

#Moderate Greentea consumption Regularly and Daily Has Significant Acute Benefits in both Mood and Performance, Researchers Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Green tea may have a potential and positive effect in treating a mood disorder, some scientists suggested.
Mood disorder is a psychological condition characterized by an elevated mood, including mania or hypomania. In other words, a syndrome is a group of mental illnesses that can affect how a person feels and thinks of him/herself and people in public life.
A mood disorder can be classified into depression, dysthymic disorder,... and bipolar disorder depending on the symptoms of expression.
The condition not only affects the personal life of the patient but also causes psychological and financial burdens to the immediate family members as the condition can only get worse over time.
According to the statistic in 2017, over 2.6 million Canadian age 12 and over were diagnosed with mood disorders, affecting over 8% of the general population. Sadly, about one in seven Canadians will experience a mood disorder at some point in their life.
The exact causes of mood disorders are unknown, however, there are some underlying factors that can elevate the risk of the condition, including family history, previous mood disorder, depression, certain medical conditions, and long-term use of some medication.
Symptoms of mood disorders are totally depending on the type of the syndrome. If you are experiencing symptoms of feelings of hopelessness, long-term trouble sleeping or daytime sleepiness, poor concentration, and trouble concentrating or making decisions accompanied by physical symptoms of fatigue or low energy, you may have mood disorders. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.
Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.
In the concerns of the widespread mental disorders, researchers at Elsevier GmbH.lauched an investigation to examine the effects of green tea or green tea extracts, l-theanine and epigallocatechin gallate both components of green tea on general neuropsychology, on the sub-category cognition and on brain functions in humans.
By searching the database of medical literature in PubMed for qualified studies that are satisfied the guidelines and criteria set by the PRISMA statement.
Out of 21 selected studies, 4 were randomized controlled trials, 12 were cross-over studies (both assessed with an adapted version of the DELPHI list), 4 were cross-sectional studies and one was a cohort study (both assessed with an adapted version of the Newcastle-Ottawa assessment scale).
After assessing the results of all studies, researchers found that injection of green tea exerts a significant effect on psychopathological symptoms (e.g. reduction of anxiety), cognition (e.g. benefits in memory and attention), and brain function (e.g. activation of working memory seen in functional MRI).
Further analysis also suggested that the effects of green tea may be attributed to the combined influence of both caffeine and l-theanine, as separate administration of either substance is found to have a lesser impact.
Moreover, in the systematic review and meta-analysis conducted on 11 randomized placebo-controlled human studies of acute effects of tea constituents L-theanine and epigallocatechin gallate, administered alone or in combination with caffeine, on cognitive function and mood, researchers discovered that* Combined caffeine and L-theanine demonstrated some moderate effects in the first 2 hours postdose, on ladder alertness, attentional switching accuracy, and, to a lesser extent, some unisensory and multisensory attentional outcomes.
* Caffeine and L-theanine doses revealed trends toward greater change in effect size for caffeine dose than for L-theanine dose, particularly during the first-hour post-dose.
Additionally, in the study to evaluate whether the tea has any effect on mood and performance benefits, such as relaxation and concentration, researchers at From Unilever Research and Development also conducted an extensive search of studies with consistent evidence for improved attention.
In the final report, researchers concluded after taking into account co and confounders
* Tea consumption also consistently improved self-reported alertness and arousal, whereas effects on pleasure or relaxation were less consistent.
* Intake of tea regularly has a strong impact on psychological functions such as work performance and creativity.
The findings suggested that moderate green tea consumption regularly and daily has significant acute benefits in both mood and performance in real-life situations.
Taken together, there is no doubt that green tea containing a number of highly bioactive compounds such as caffeine, l-theanine, and epigallocatechin gallate may be considered a functional food to protect brain functioning against the onset of mood disorders.

Scientists may have found a herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer with no side effects, according to studies.
Gastric cancer or stomach cancer is a condition characterized by the abnormal growth of cells in the stomach tissue.
Most cases of gastric cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the stomach tissue.
At stage 0, due to the gastric cancer cells being restricted or completely contained within the innermost layer of the lining, patients may not experience any symptoms.
However, at the later stage, the cancer cells can travel a distance away from the stomach to infect other tissue and organ, leading to secondary metastasis. If the tumor grows large enough, it may suppress the nearby blood vessels and nerve cells, causing blood to leak into the stomach and localized severe pain.
Besides common symptoms of cancers, patients with gastric cancer also experience some specific symptoms such as persistent abdominal (belly) pain., vague discomfort in the abdomen, a sense of fullness in the upper abdomen after eating a small meal, and heartburn or indigestion.
If you are having some of the above symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out gastric cancer possibility.
Although there are many risk factors involved in the onset of the disease, such as family history, Helicobacter pylori infection, smoking, genetic preposition, certain stomach conditions, previous stomach surgery and type A blood, some researchers suggested that the most common cause of gastric cancer in the Western world is the Western diet-related disease.
Dr. Bertuccio P, the lead scientist at the Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri, in the concern of diet pattern in the risk of gastric cancer, wrote, " An unfavorable role on GC emerged for the 'Western/unhealthy' dietary pattern, with an OR of 1.51 (95% CI: 1.21-1.89)" and "A favorable role on GC emerged for the 'Prudent/healthy', with an odds ratio (OR) of 0.75 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.63-0.90], for the highest versus the lowest category".
The results strongly indicated the risk of gastric cancer is substantially higher in the Western diet group compared to the lower risk of a healthy diet.
Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is one of the species of Bearberry, in the genus Arctostaphylos, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.
The herb plant has been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic agent and to treat urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infections, kidney stones, pelvic pain, etc.
The plant contains arbutin, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones tannins, phenolic glycosides, and flavonoids.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of gastric cancer, researchers at the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine examined the effects of ursolic acid isolated from bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) against the pathogenesis of gastric cancer characterized by excessive proliferation, abnormal differentiation, and reduced apoptosis.
Ursolic acid, extracted from the traditional Chinese medicine bearberry, inhibited gastric cancer cell proliferation and induced apoptosis.
Further assessment of anti-gastric cancer, researchers discovered that ursolic acid exhibited apoptotic activity through cancer cell degradation observed in the gastric cancer BGC-823 cells.
In other words, the efficacy is associated with a translocation of cofilin-1 protein that activates the function of cytochrome c in program cell death from the mitochondria to the cytoplasm.
These results suggested that ursolic acid activated the function of proteins (the caspase cascade) associated with the cell death and apoptotic pathway.
Where Mitochondria are the major organelles involved in the biochemical execution of apoptosis
Dr. the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders said, "Mitochondrial translocation of cofilin-1 might play a crucial role in the promotion of apoptosis and might be a key target for future treatment of human gastric cancer".
Taken altogether, Bearberry (herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) processed a major compound of ursolic acid may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with other primary medicine for the treatment of gastric cancer, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
However, intake of ursolic acid as a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdoses and acute liver toxicity.

In Vitro, #Herbal #Burdock Rough Extracts Exert a Strong Antimicrobial Activity, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Infection is a result of the invasion of microorganisms that have successfully multiplied in the host body and the reaction of host tissues.
Bacteria is a single cell microorganism. Most bacterias are not harmful, some may also benefit the digestive system. However, 1% of invasive bacteria can make us sick and damage the body tissue, such as bacteria associated with tuberculosis.
There are many ways to cause infection including bacteria passed from person to person, transmitted by bites from insects or animals. and ingesting contaminated food or water.
The most common symptoms of infectious diseases are fever, diarrhea, fatigue, muscle aches, and coughing, depending on the specific area of infection.
The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprises the body's defense system against diseases.
Most bacteria are killed in the first phase of acute infection. In this phase, the immune white blood cells in the first line of defense in responding to the body tissue damage or injury by stimulating the production of proinflammatory cytokines to kill off all invasive pathogens on the site of damage.
However, overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines in most cases can destroy the nearby healthy cells, leading to the formation of scars as seen in liver infection.
What contributes to the overexpression proinflammatory and underexpression of anti-inflammatory cytokines of the body in the initiation of chronic inflammatory diseases?
Dr. Thomas W. McDade and colleagues in the investigation of the role of proinflammatory cytokines in the risk of infection explained, "The metabolic syndrome may be characterized by dysregulated inflammation, in which an important anti-inflammatory signal is absent. Similarly, in a prospective study of patients with acute coronary syndromes, baseline IL-10 concentration was a significant predictor of death or myocardial infarction during 6 months of follow-up, ......high IL-10 experienced an adverse outcome, compared to 21.8% of patients with high CRP but low IL-10
Burdock is a plant in the group of biennial thistles, genus Arctium, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to the Euro.
The plant has been used for thousands of years in China medicine as a diuretic, diaphoretic, and blood-purifying agent and to treat wounds and infections stomach ulcers, and other digestive problems.
With an aim to the discover of natural biocomponents from plants with antibacterial activity on endodontic microbiota for the new therapies, researchers evaluated the antibacterial activity of a phytotherapeutic agent prepared from an ethyl acetate fraction (AcOEt) extracted from Arctium lappa.
A total of 27 maxillary canines with a mixed bacterial suspension of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Streptococcus mutans Candida albicans were included in the study.
The teeth were divided into three groups and their canals were filled with group 1, calcium hydroxide and propylene glycol; group 2, a paste containing AcOEt fraction of A. lappa (Burdock) and propylene glycol; group 3, propylene glycol (control).
At 7, 14 and 30 days, three teeth from each group opened, researchers found that mild bacterial growth was found in group 1 at all time intervals; in group 2 there was severe growth at 7 days, but no growth at 14 and 30 days.
Furthermore, in vitro, the antimicrobial activity of rough extracts from leaves of Arctium lappa showed inhibition of Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, and Candida albicans selectively to specific target microorganisms.
In other words, each constituent in the extract of Burdock inhibited only a certain type of endodontic pathogens without affecting others.
Dr.Pereira JV, the lead author said, "The Arctium lappa constituents exhibited a great microbial inhibition potential against the tested endodontic pathogens".
More importantly, in the review of the antimicrobial activity against bacteria and yeasts of extracts of 13 Brazilian medicinal plants, researchers found that only 10 plant extracts showed varied levels of antibacterial activity.
Arctium lappa exerted some degree of antibacterial activity compared to other plants, including Mikania glomerata, Sambucus canadensis, Plantago major, and Erythrina species.
Burdock was one of 5 plants belonging to the Asteraceae family demonstrated the Rf values similar to the antibacterial compounds visible on bioautogram.

#Herbal #Anisefluid Extract Shows Antimycotic Activity Against Candida albicans, C. parapsilosis, C. tropicalis, C. pseudotropicalis and C. krusei, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Herbal Anise may be used for the prevention and treatment of fungal infection with no side effects, according to studies.
Yeasts, molds, and mushrooms are types of fungi. The tiny microorganisms have cells with nuclear.
Most common fungal infections start from the lungs or the skin. Long-term use of antibiotics and people with a weakened immune system are susceptible to fungal infection, epidemiologically.
However, some researchers suggested that common risk factors for fungal infection also include pregnancy, diabetes mellitus, oral contraceptives, and inadequate therapy.
Candida albicans is the common cause of fungal infection in the Western world. It is a member of a large group of an organism whose cells contain complex structures enclosed within the membranes, including yeast and mold that live among the gut flora in the human mouth and gastrointestinal tract.
Under normal circumstances, Candida albicans do cause harmful effects, but overgrowth results in candidiasis.
Dr. M. Mar Rodríguez and colleagues examined obesity in the change of the human gut mycobiome, and wrote, "The human intestine is home to a diverse range of bacterial and fungal species, forming an ecological community that contributes to normal physiology and disease susceptibility".
And, "Mucor racemosus and M. fuscus were the species more represented in non-obese subjects compared to obese counterparts. Interestingly, the decreased relative abundance of the Mucor genus in obese subjects was reversible upon weight loss".
These results clearly suggested that obese people are more susceptible to fungal infection due to reduced levels of healthy gut mycobiome in the gut. Weight loss can reverse this change.
Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belonging to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region.
The popular herb has been used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, carminative, digestive, expectorant, stimulant, and tonic agent to treat head-lice and mites, increase blood pressure, prevent the formation of gas in the gastrointestinal tract and menstrual cramps, etc.
Besides the main ingredient Anethole, the herbal plant also contains D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.
On examing the antifungal activity of p-anisaldehyde (1), o-anisaldehyde (2), and m-anisaldehyde isolated from the herbal Anise in thirty-six fluconazole-sensitive and eleven fluconazole-resistant Candida isolates, researchers showed that all compounds exerted a significant effect in inhibiting the growth and sensitivity of the organisms at different concentrations.
Compound-1, compound-2, and compound-3 exerted a rapid irreversible action on fungal cells through the fungal membrane-located target.
All the compounds inhibited the creation of the electrochemical gradient in the plasma membrane of the fungi, at their respective MIC(90) values, leading to intracellular acidification and cell death observed by the expression of deep wrinkles, deformity, and flowed content in the fungal membrane.
These results indicate that compound-1, compound-2, and compound-3 have significant antifungal activity against Candida.
In vitro, researchers examined the antifungal activities of fluid extract and the essential oil obtained from anise fruits Pimpinella anisum L. (Apiaceae) on clinical isolates of seven species of yeasts and four species of dermatophytes.
Anise fluid extract showed antimycotic activity against Candida albicans, C. parapsilosis, C. tropicalis, C. pseudotropicalis, and C. krusei with MIC values between 17 and 20%.
Anise fruit extracts also showed growth promotion activity on Geotrichum spp, a fungus associated with skin, sputum, and feces.
Furthermore, Anise fruit extract inhibited the growth of dermatophyte species (Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, Microsporum Canis, and M. gypseum) with MIC values between 1.5 and 9.0%.
Anise essential oil showed strong antifungal activity against yeasts with MIC lower than 1.56% (V/V) and dermatophytes with MIC lower than 0.78%, compared to the water extract.
These findings once again suggested that Anise essential oil exhibited stronger antifungal activities against yeasts and dermatophytes with MIC values between 0.10 and 1.56% (V/V), respectively, compared to the water extract.
Taken together, herbal Anise may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of fungal infection with no side effects, pending the confirmation of a large and multicenter human study.

#ManakuHoney, A Promising Artificial Extracellular Matrix Components to Improve the Regeneration of Tissues, such as Cartilage Repair
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a golden liquid for the treatment of cartilage damage without inducing any side effects, some studies suggested.
Cartilage is an important structural component placed in the joints of bone with a function to prevent the end of the bone collided from one to another.
Cartilage is a firm tissue but is softer and much more flexible than bone.
Due to the lack of blood vessels connected to the cartilage to supply the chondrocytes with nutrients, repairing the damage to cartilage are more slowly than other tissues.
Cartilage repair is an act to restore the surface of joint cartilage. However, how sufficiency of the work is totally depending on the degree of the damage.
In conventional medicine, cartilage damage due to a single injury, or lesion can be repaired successfully. However, with many lesions in one joint, are less likely to benefit from the surgery. cartilage, particularly in the older population.
In the article "Articular Cartilage Restoration", the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons wrote, "Many procedures to restore articular cartilage are done arthroscopically" and "Some procedures require the surgeon to have more direct access to the affected area. Longer, open incisions are required. Sometimes it is necessary to address other problems in the joint, such as meniscal or ligament tears when cartilage surgery is done"
Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The rich golden liquid is considered healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener.
With an aim to find the natural ingredient or whole food for cartilage repair in replacement of that conventional medicine with no side effects, researchers at a number of institutes conducted a joint study to evaluate the nature-derived hydrogels, a promising class of scaffolds for cartilage tissue engineering, mimicking the native cellular microenvironment.
Manuka honey-made hydrogels were able to inhibit the proliferation of S. aureus and S. epidermidis clinical isolates and no cytotoxic effects were detected on human mesenchymal stem cells seeded on the hydrogels.
Manuka honey initiated a consistent expression of collagen II and high synthesis of
Sulfated glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and proteoglycans, thus indicating the formation of the cartilage matrix.
Where Sulfated glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans are considered promising artificial extracellular matrix components to improve the regeneration of tissues, such as cartilage repair.
These results suggested Manuka honey processes a similar action as those of synthetic substances used for the treatment to improve cartilage regeneration.
In order to understand the effect of Manuka honey in cartilage repair, researchers launched a differentiation of the research paper "Antibacterial effectiveness meets improved mechanical properties: Manuka Honey/Gellan Gum composite hydrogels for cartilage repair", Bonifacio et al.
And suggested that before Manuka honey can be used for the treatment of cartilage repair, there are some criteria that must be met. you can view them at the sources
Due to the limitation of the study, therefore, further data collection large example size, and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of Manuka honey cartilage repair possibilities.

#Herbal #Arnica Exerted Significantly Less Pain through Muscle Tenderness and VAS 72 Hours, Studies Find
Kyle J. Norton
Herbal Arnica may be used as a natural painkiller in alleviating pain without inducing any side effects, some scientists suggested.
Pain is a natural response from the brain caused by intense or damaging stimuli with an aim to protect our body against injury or damage.
Pain can vary greatly such as mild, sharp, severe, and dull. Acute pain is the sensation that lasts for a short period of time.
Chronic pain is pain that lasts longer than 12 weeks. Most cases of chronic pain arise from an initial injury such as back injury or diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and fibromyalgia.
There are different types of pain, including
* Nociceptive pain is a normal response to injury of tissues such as skin, muscles, visceral organs, joints, tendons, or bones.
* Neuropathic pain is a type of pain caused by a primary lesion in the somatosensory nervous system
and
* Inflammatory pain is associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines in response to the acute phase of infection and chronic inflammatory diseases.
Conventional medicine used for the treatment of pain is effective in improving the quality of life of patients. However, long-term use has been known to induce some common fatigue, mental cloudiness, unclear thinking, and mood change and serious cardiovascular issues, sexual dysfunction, side effects
Most common prescription painkillers are the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and
Opioids
Therefore, if you currently taking medication to reduce chronic pain, please make sure you know all the side effects
Arnica is a herbaceous species, genus perennial, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia.
The plant has been used in herbal medicine for centuries to treat strains, sprains, and bruises.
Colon Cancer is defined as a condition of the abnormal proliferation of cells in the colon.
Pain is a feeling triggered in the nervous system as a result of often caused by intense or damaging stimuli.
In the finding, the natural topical compound for the treatment revelation of pain and a replacement of conventional a painkiller with little or no side effects, researchers at the Department of Plastic Surgery of Queen Victoria Hospital in West Sussex, examine the herb Arnica montana, in topical formulations used in the traditional medicine for pain relief.
Thirty-seven patients undergoing bilateral endoscopic carpal tunnel release between June 1998 and January 2000 were included in a double-blind, randomized comparison of Arnica administration versus placebo.
Grip strength, wrist circumference, and perceived pain measured 1 and 2 weeks after surgery. Application of Arnica showed no difference in grip strength or wrist circumference but a significant reduction in pain experienced after 2 weeks compared to placebo.
Dr. Pumpa KL, the lead author at the University of Canberra in the study to reaffirm the use of topical Arnica gel, for the treatment of pain, evaluated the Arnica effect on the inflammation and muscle damage, and in turn, improve performance in well-trained males experiencing delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).
The study included twenty well-trained males matched by maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O2 Max) and completed a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial.
Topical Arnica was applied to the skin superficial to the quadriceps and gastrocnemius muscles immediately after a downhill running protocol designed to induce DOMS.
Topical Arnica group exerted significantly less pain through muscle tenderness and VAS 72 hours post-exercise and did not affect any performance assessments or markers of muscle damage or inflammation.
Furthermore, topical Arnica used immediately after intense eccentric exercise and for the following 96 hours did not have an effect on performance or blood markers.
The doctoral team after taking into account co and confounders said, " (Topical Arnica applications) demonstrate the possibility of providing pain relief three days post-eccentric exercise".

Taken altogether, topical Arnica gel may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of muscle pain and damage due to over-muscle exercises.
