#Herbal #Arctostaphylos uva-ursi #Extract Protects the SkinPidment by Inhibiting #Lyrosinase, the Enzyme that Cause Oxidation, Researchers Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi may have a potential effect in reducing the risk and treatment of oxidative stress-related diseases, some studies suggested.

Oxidative stress is a production of the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the bost body.

The imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the bost body can be caused either by the overproduction of free radicals or antioxidant enzymes suppressed by outside sources.

However, most outside sources that suppress the levels of antioxidant enzymes also play an important role in stimulating the overexpression of free radicals, such as chemical toxins

Free radicals are unstable atoms with the unpaired electron in the outer ring. Therefore, in order for them to become stable, free radical either donates or steals an electron from stable molecules, leading to a chain of reaction that facilitates the onset of oxidative stress.

The chain once starts, it can not stop until the electron on the outer ring is paired or inhibited by the antioxidant.

A free radical has been known to cause oxidative damage to enzymes, other protein, unsaturated fatty acid, phospholipids, DNA, and RNA.

Antioxidants are stable molecules found abundantly in fruits, vegetables, and herbal medicine.

If oxidative stress-related diseases are associated with the overproduction of free radicals, then long-term intake of a healthy diet high in fruits, and vegetables and less in red meat and saturated and trans fat and processed foods can reduce the risk of the diseases in healthy individuals.

Dr. Halliwell B, in the study to reaffirm the effect of healthy dietary patterns against the onset of oxidative stress said, " diet-derived antioxidants may be particularly important in protecting against these diseases" and

"The physiological relevance of these effects is uncertain, as is the optimal intake of most diet-derived antioxidants. In principle, these questions could be addressed by examining the effects of dietary composition and/or antioxidant supplementation upon parameters of oxidative damage in vivo".

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is one of the species of Bearberry, in the genus Arctostaphylos, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic agent and to treat urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infections, kidney stones, pelvic pain, etc.

The herbal plant contains arbutin, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones tannins, phenolic glycosides, and flavonoids.

In the examining the Dr. Bol'shakova IV, the lead author at the Emanuel Institute of Biochemical Physics claim, that Arctostaphylos uva.processes a significant antioxidant property in the inhibition of free radicals generation, researchers launched an investigation to evaluate the concentration of compound that inhibited cell growth by 50% (IC(50)) of a range of phytochemicals and plant extracts.

All selected extracts were differentiated according to the antioxidant and genoprotective effects under conditions of oxidative stress in U937 cells.

Two phytochemicals-resveratrol and citroflavan-3-ol isolated from the herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi demonstrated the highest IC50 value of 13.7 microg/mL, compared to the lowest at 9,400 microg/mL. of Echinacea.

Extract of herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi displayed a significant attenuation of the oxidative stress induced by the etoposide injection by inhibiting the expression of H2O2- and tBOOH-induced DNA damage.

These result reconfirmed the findings of Dr. Bol'shakova IV team that herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi as a non-nutrient dietary constituent may act as significant bioactive compounds in enhancing the antioxidants activity and stimulating the production of antioxidant enzymes if the herb is administrated in an animal model.

Moreover, Dr.Matsuda H the antioxidant team leader at the Kinki University, Osaka in the finding the natural compounds or whole food with potential antioxidant effects evaluated the inhibitory effect of 50% ethanol extracts obtained from the leaves of six Arctostaphylos plants (A. patula, A. viscida, A. canescens, A. Columbiana, A. nevadensis and A. uva-ursi) (Ericaceae).

Injection of the extracts of A. patula showed potent inhibition against tyrosinase, the enzyme that cause oxidation of the skin pigment.

Also, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi not only inhibited the production of melanin from dopachrome by autoxidation but reduced the over-exhibited SOD (superoxide dismutase, free radical)-like activity.

Additionally, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi processed a moderate absorbance in the UV-B area.

The results not only reaffirm the claim of Dr. Bol'shakova IV's suggestion but also introduce a new herbal whitening medicine for the skin.

Taken together, Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi may be considered a functional food for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combine with primary medicine for the treatment of oxidative-related diseases.

#Healthyfood #CruciferousVegetables Process Anti-#Cancer Activity through the Expression of #Antioxidantsenzymes, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Cruciferous vegetables may be the next pharmaceutical target to find effective ingredients for the treatment of cancers, some scientists suggested.

Cancers are a class of medical conditions caused by irregular cell growth with the alternation of DNA.

Primary cancers are cancers that start at the original site. What causes the cells of the tissue or organs to become cancerous is unknown. Researchers do not know why people with the same health conditions, family history, and diet are susceptible to cell DNA alternation while most do not.

Genetic mutation inherited from the parents is one of the major risk factors that have been found in some of cancer patients. According to the statistic, gene mutations are associated with 7% of all cancer cases in the US.

By targeting the gene that initiates the onset of cancer and its specific dysregulated molecular pathways patients may have a higher chance to inhibit the growth and spread of a tumor.

However, most people who carry the cancerous gene do not know they have them. Dr. Jain Rin the study " The Relevance of Hereditary Cancer Risks to Precision Oncology: What Should Providers Consider When Conducting Tumor Genomic Profiling?" said, "Through tumor genomic profiling (TGP), existing and novel treatments can be selected to better target the specific dysregulated molecular pathways that drive growth and spread of a patient's tumor"

" Although the primary purpose of TGP is to detect targetable somatic mutations for treatment, TGP may also uncover germline mutations with important implications for patients and family members. Oncology care providers should be aware of the hereditary cancer risks associated with genes commonly tested by TGP.".

And, "Patients should be informed about the possible discovery of hereditary cancer risk information and the relevance of this information to their health and that of family members, and should have their preferences toward further evaluation of hereditary risk information that could be revealed by TGP documented in the medical record and followed".

Types of mutated genes facilitating the risk of cancer include BAG3, 10q26.11, BAG3 (Bcl- BLCAP, 20q11.23, BLCAP,...

Furthermore, unhealthy lifestyle choices also have a substantial effect on the increased risk of cancer.

"Seventy-one percent(71%) of lung cancer deaths are caused by tobacco use (lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death globally). The combined effects of tobacco use, low fruit and vegetable intake, urban air pollution, and indoor smoke from household use of solid fuels cause 76% of lung cancer deaths. Exposure to these behavioral and environmental factors is preventable; modifications in lifestyle could have a large impact in reducing the cancer burden worldwide (WHO, 2009)". Dr, Weiderpass E at the Karolinska Institutet, wrote in the study " Lifestyle and cancer Risk"

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables belonging to the family Brassicaceae, including cauliflower, cabbage, cress, bok choy, broccoli, etc.

Its chemical constituents include glucosinolates, dithiolthiones, indoles, glucoraphanin, s-methyl cysteine sulfoxide, isothiocyanates, indole-3-carbinol, etc...

In the study to evaluate the naturally occurring sulforaphane (SF) anti-cancer effects, researchers at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute launched an investigation to examine the SF isolated from cruciferous vegetables administered to rats orally either in a single dose or once daily for 7 days.

Application of SF exerts a significant effect in the stimulation of the production of antioxidant enzymes GST and NQO1 varied by 3- to 6-fold among the organs of SF-treated rats.

Tissue uptake of SF was the greatest in the stomach, declining rapidly in the descending gastrointestinal tract,

Particularly, the tissue uptake level of SF in the bladder was second only to that in the stomach. Tissue levels of SF in the colon, prostate, and several other organs were very low, compared to those in the bladder and stomach.

These results suggested according to the levels and organ uptakes and antioxidants enzymes produced during the course of the experiment, dietary SF, is a potential chemopreventive benefit for the treatment of cancer.

Furthermore, in the search for the effects of sulforaphane on cancer stem cells (CSCs), researchers launched a review of some medical literature found in the medical database.

Where CSCs are suggested to be responsible for initiating and maintaining cancer and contributing to recurrence and drug resistance.

A number of studies have indicated that sulforaphane may target CSCs in different types of cancer through modulation of NF-κB, a cellar apoptotic protein, SHH present in various human tumors epithelial-mesenchymal transition, in the expression of tumor progression and malignant transformation and Wnt/β-catenin pathways in cancer, stem cell regeneration, and organogenesis.

Dr. Li Y, the lead author of the final report said, "Combination therapy with sulforaphane and chemotherapy in preclinical settings has shown promising results".

The findings suggested that cruciferous vegetables processed with a high level of sulforaphane (SF) may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with other primary therapy for the treatment of cancer, depending on the uptake organ's tissue and further large and multi-center human studies.

#Allicor Mornalizes #HighBloodPressure by Decreasing Systolic Blood Pressure But no Decrease in Diastolic Blood Pressure

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural bioactive ingredient for the prevention and treatment of hypertension with no side effects, according to the studies.
Hypertension is a medical condition characterized by abnormally high blood pressure.

Acute high blood pressure is a risk of high blood pressure caused by sudden stress or physical activity in a short term that will eventually fall back to normal levels.

Chronic hypertension is a persistence of elevated high blood pressure which cannot be decreased without medication.

Chronic hypertension is one of the members of the cluster of conditions associated with metabolic syndrome and a major cause of cardiovascular disease.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

Some researchers suggested that hypertension may be caused by certain medical conditions, such as kidney disease, however, the cause of the syndrome is more likely as a result of an unhealthy lifestyle.
Blood pressure medications have undoubtedly prevented many deaths from heart disease in the past 30 years, but they have many side effects.

Therefore, if you are currently taking medicine for the treatment of hypertension, please make sure you know all side effects for preventive measures.

Dr. Beilin LJ, at the University Department of Medicine, and West Australian Heart Research Institute in the examine the lifestyle risk of hypertension wrote, High salt intakes remain a major contributor to hypertension, especially when potassium intake is low. Smoking has a dominant effect in increasing cardiovascular risk in hypertensives ".

And, "Clustering of risk factors is often associated with clustering of unhealthy lifestyle characteristics and both are most prominent in lower socio-economic groups and in Developing Countries adopting a more sedentary lifestyle and Western diet patterns".

This statement clearly suggested that by making changes to lifestyle, maintaining an ideal weight, and dieting with low salt, you could do just fine without the drugs.

Allicin is phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compounds, found abundantly in onion and garlic.

On finding a natural compound for the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure, one of the major conditions associated with the onset of cardiovascular disease, researchers examined the antihypertensive phytochemical allicin isolated from garlic.

The study included nine patients with rather severe hypertension (diastolic blood pressure > or = 115 mm Hg).

Administrated garlic preparation including 1.3% allicin at a large dose (2400 mg) showed a sitting blood pressure fall of 7/16 (+/- 3/2 SD) mm Hg at peak effect approximately 5 hours after the dose.

From 5-14 hours after the dose, the preparation significantly decreased the diastolic blood pressure with no side effects.

Dr. McMahon FG, the lead scientist said, "Our results indicate that this garlic preparation can reduce blood pressure", after taking into account other factors.

Furthermore, in a total of 84 men with mild or moderate arterial hypertension, researchers compared the antihypertensive effects of time-released garlic powder tablets (Allicor) with that of regular garlic pills (Kwai)in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with an active control arm.

After an 8-week placebo treatment run-in phase, patients were randomized either to 600 mg Allicor (n=30) or to placebo (n=20) daily for 8 weeks In addition, in the open-label branch, patients received either 2400 mg Allicor daily (n=18) or 900 mg Kwai daily (n=16).

Allicor treatment at a dose of t600 mg daily showed a decrease of both systolic and diastolic blood pressures by 7.0 mm Hg (95% confidence interval (95% CI): 5.3-8.7) and 3.8 mm Hg (95% CI: 2.7-4.8), respectively.

However, Increasing the Allicor dosage to 2400 mg daily did not provide any additional benefit.

Treatment with Kwai exerted a similar effect in decreasing systolic blood pressure (5.4 mm Hg, 95% CI: 1.9-8.8) as those of Allicor, but no decrease in diastolic blood pressure.

The results clearly indicated that Allicor may process the prolonged action that was found in the Kwai treatment group.

Dr. Sobenin IA, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "Time-released garlic powder tablets are more effective for the treatment of mild and moderate arterial hypertension than are regular garlic supplements".

Taken altogether, allicin, a bioactive compound processed with antihypertensive properties may be used for the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure, pending the validation of a large sample size and multicenter study.

#Phytochemical #Allylisothiocyanate AITC Decrease the Proliferation and Viability of Human Brain Malignant Glioma in Vitro

Kyle J. Norton

Phytochemical Allyl isothiocyanate may be the next pharmacotherapeutic target to identify the chemo drug for the treatment of brain cancer without inducing any side effects.
Phytochemicals, the natural chemical constituent, protect the plants against diseases and form their outer's color.

Brain and spinal cord make up the nervous system. Brain and Spinal Cord tumors originating are not very common.

Brain cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by cell growth disorderly in the brain tissue.

Benign tumors are noncancerous, and malignant tumors are cancerous. More than 190.000 people in the US are diagnosed with a brain tumor each year alone.

Most brain types of brain cancer in older adults ages 50 to 60 are Chordomas. The cancer is a rare and slow growing, but it can invade adjacent bone and put pressure on the nearby neural tissue.

Meningiomas, the most common type of benign brain tumor of the age group 40-50s. However, a small percentage of these tumors can be malignant.

According to the statistic provided by the Canadian cancer society, Every day about 25 Canadians is diagnosed with a brain tumor.

The 5-year survival rate of brain cancer is only 25%, compared to over 60% for cancers overall. Most adults with a diagnosis of aggressive glioblastoma survive only 1–2 years after their diagnosis.

The exact causes of brain cancer are debatable. Researchers do not know why people with the same health conditions, and family history, are at a higher risk to develop brain cancer while others do not.

Some researchers suggested genetic preposition and acquired gene mutation due to long-term exposure to chemical toxins may be the prevalent risk factor that causes the alternation of brain cell DNA.

The most common symptoms of brain cancer depending on the stage are persistent headaches and localized pain, gradual loss of sensation and movement, speech difficulty and persistent pain

If you are experiencing some of the above symptoms, please make sure you check with your doctor immediately to rule out brain cancer possibility.

Allyl isothiocyanate is phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compound, found abundantly in horseradish, mustard, wasabi, etc.

Most primary tumors are caused by abnormal cells growth that surrounds and support neurons, with a small number may be caused by a gene defect from exposure to radiation or toxic chemicals.

In the examining the side effects of Allyl isothiocyanate from the available data suggest that urinary concentrations of AITC equivalent are at least ten times higher than in the plasma, and tissue levels of AITC equivalent in the urinary bladder were 14-79 times higher than in other organs after oral AITC administration to rats for the treatment of cancer.

These results indicated AITC may be most effective in the bladder as a cancer chemopreventive compound, as AITC at high-dose levels exhibited a low degree of cytotoxicity and genotoxicity in animal cancer studies.

Once again, the experiment reaffirmed the effect of AITC in the exhibition of many desirable attributes of a cancer chemopreventive agent.

In the reassessment of Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) in the reduced risk of cancer, researchers at the National Chung Hsing University conducted an experiment to examine the effects of the phytochemical in the brain cancer cells.

Compared to other cancer cell line inhibition, AITC significantly decreased the proliferation and viability of human brain malignant glioma GBM 8401 cells in a dose-dependent manner with IC50 9.25+/-0.69 microM for 24 h-treatment.

In cell differentiated assay, AITC induced significantly G2/M arrest and sub-G1 phase (apoptotic population) in GBM 8401 cells.

AITC markedly reduced the CDK1/cyclin B activity and protein levels which are responsible for cancer cell proliferation and survival.

Furthermore, AITC-induced apoptotic cell death by enhancing the proteins associated with cell death programming.

Dr. Chen NG, the lead scientist at the final report, said, "AITC is a potent anti-human brain malignant glioma drug and it shows a remarkable action on cell cycle arrest before a commitment for apoptosis is reached".

Taken altogether, it is safe to suggest that Phytochemical Allyl isothiocyanate may be used as a chemopreventive and functional phytochemical for high-risk of brain cancer individuals and an adjunct therapy combined with primary medicine for the treatment of brain cancer.

#Phytochemical @Sulforaphane Shows a Strong Anti #ColonCancer Activity through Its Detoxified Enzymes, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer with no side effects, according to studies.
Colon cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing in a predictable way.

In most cases, primary colon cancer starts in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the colon. At the early stage. most patients with colon cancer do not experience any symptoms.

However, at the advanced stage, the tumor not only can spread to other healthy tissue and organs a distance away through blood and fluid circulation but also suppress the nearby tissue and nerve cells.

The progression of colon cancer at this stage not only induces symptoms of the change in bowel habits, the change in the consistency of your stool, that lasts longer than four weeks but also causes rectal bleeding and persistent abdominal severe pain.

According to the statistic by the American Cancer Society, in the US, there are
97,220 new cases of colon cancer were diagnosed in 2018. The lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

The causes of colon cancer are unknown but certain risk factors, such as genetic preposition and chronic inflammation induced by colonic diseases are associated with the onset of the disease.

Some researchers suggested that the widespread colon cancer over the past few decades is probably associated with the promotion of the Western diet.

According to an article posted on WebMD By Salynn Boyles, the author said, "While there is no shortage of evidence linking the so-called Western diet to an increased risk for developing colon cancer, the study is among the first to examine the impact of such a diet on survival among patients treated for the disease".

And, "The findings must be confirmed, but Dana-Farber Cancer Center oncologist Jeffrey Meyerhardt, MD, a researcher on the team, says they cannot be ignored by colon cancer patients or their physicians".

The statement clearly suggested that by making a change to a healthy diet, the risk of colon cancer can be reduced substantially.

Dithiolthiones are phytochemicals in the class of Organosulfides, found abundantly in cruciferous vegetables, garden sorrel, horseradish, etc.

On finding a natural bioactive compound for the treatment of colon cancer with no side effects, researchers looked into sulforaphane an isothiocyanate that is present naturally in widely consumed vegetables and has a particularly high concentration in broccoli in the risk of colon cancer.

In rats, sulforaphane blocked the formation of tumors initiated by chemicals. The chemical compound inhibited the reinitiation of growth and decreases the cellular viability of quiescent human colon carcinoma cells (HT29).

Furthermore, sulforaphane-induced cell cycle arrest was correlated with an increased expression of a protein associated with cell cycle division and cell death via an apoptotic process through cancer cell degradation.

Moreover, researchers found the anti-colon cancer cell line effect was not attributed to the proteins associated with programming cell death but to the activation of detoxifying enzymes.

Dr. after taking into account co and confounders, said, " (These) results strongly suggest that in addition to the activation of detoxifying enzymes, induction of apoptosis is also involved in the sulforaphane-associated chemoprevention of cancer.

Additionally, the reaffirm the anticancer effect of the biological effect of GE132+Natural, a novel supplement consisting of 5 compounds: Resveratrol, Ganoderma lucidum, Sulforaphane, Lycopene, and Royal jelly, researchers analyzed the formula activity against 3 different human cancer cell lines: MCF7 (breast cancer cells), PC3 (prostate cancer cells), and SW480 (colon cancer cells), as well as on EA.hy 926 (normal human endothelial cell line).

The formula exerted a significant antiproliferative activity on all tested cancer cell lines (PC3, MCF7, and SW480), as well as on the EA.hy 926 endothelial cell line in a dose-dependent manner.

However, the application of the formula at different concentrations did not affect both the proliferation of primary mesenchymal stem cells and the peripheral blood cell counts.

The result pointed out that adult mesenchymal stem cells might be valuable as a test system for evaluating the toxicity and efficacy of new medicines or chemicals.

In the study to investigate the dietary isothiocyanates (ITCs) activity against HDAC turnover, CtIP acetylation, and dysregulated DNA damage signaling in colon cancer cells, researchers found that sulforaphane (SFN), a member of ITCs protects the colon tissue by inhibiting the HDAC activity and increase HDAC protein turnover.

Injection of sulforaphane (SFN) also induced colon cell growth arrest, autophagy, and apoptosis.

Further analysis of the results researcher also discovered that ITC-induced DNA damage of colon cancer cells without causing harm to the non-cancer cells.

Taken altogether, the findings suggested that phytochemical sulforaphane may be considered a bioactive compound for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer, pending the confirmation of the large sample size and multi-centers human study

#ChlorogenicAcids (CGAs) Found in #Eggplant Inhibits the Risk of ChronicDiseases through Its Glucose and Lipid Metabolism Regulation, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Eggplant, the night shape fruit or vegetable may have a strong effect in reducing the risk and treatment of type 2 diabetes, some researchers suggested.

Type 2 diabetes is a condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose.

The condition of insulin resistance is either caused by cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

According to the US statistic in 2015, approximately 30.3 million Americans, or 9.4% of the population, had diabetes. and 1.25 million American children and adults have type 1 diabetes.

Some researchers suggested that the widespread of type 2 diabetes in the US was associated with the promotion of the Western diet which has been found to complicate the risk of insulin receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol, affecting the receptor in absorbing and releasing insulin from and to the body.

Dr. Merat S, the lead scientist in the study of a group of mice involved in the Western diet risk of insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia wrote, "The Western diet group had higher average glucose levels (187+/-16 versus 159+/-12 mg/dL) and 4.5-fold higher plasma insulin levels".and "the Western diets commonly used in LDLR-/- mice may not only induce atherosclerosis but also IR, potentially complicating the interpretation of results".

These results firmly suggested long-term followers of the Western diet high in saturated and trans fat, red meat, processed foods, and low in fruits and vegetables are the main culprits for the onset of insulin resistance, the early stage of type 2 diabetes.

Therefore, by the change to a healthy diet that reduces the intake of total fat (saturated fatty acids in particular) and increases the intake of dietary fiber by consuming more vegetables and fruits and whole grain cereal products, diabetes is preventable.

Dr. Matti Uusitupa, MD, in the article "Lifestyles Matter in the Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes" quoted, "In a Swedish uncontrolled study shown that an increase in physical activity and moderate weight loss reduced the incidence of type 2 diabetes by 50% in middle-aged men with IGT" and

"In a Chinese study of IGT patients, 6-year interventions with diet, physical activity, and diet plus physical activity resulted in an approximate 30–40% reduction in diabetes risk in both normal weight and overweight persons".

Eggplant is a species of S. melongena, belonging to the family Solanaceae and native to India, cultivated in southern and eastern Asia since prehistory.

The vegetable is famous for its deep purple and the best eggplant can be found from August through October when it is in the season. While it's generally thought of as a vegetable, eggplant is actually a fruit.

Chemical constituents
The vegetable chemical compounds containing include sterols (i.e. typical plant sterols, androstane, pregnant, and cholestane derivatives, steroidal alkaloids, and sapogenins), phytosterols, triterpenes, δ-amyrin, Chlorogenic acid, Nasunin, and other Polyphenolic compounds.

In the concerns of the widespread type 2 diabetes among Americans, researchers launched an investigation to examine the National Diabetes Education Program of NIH, Mayo Clinic, and American Diabetes Association recommendation of an eggplant-based diet as a choice for the management of type 2 diabetes.

The recommendation is based on the rationale is the high fiber and low soluble carbohydrate content of eggplant.

Application of phenolic-enriched extracts of eggplant showed a moderate free radical scavenging-linked antioxidant activity and high alpha-glucosidase inhibition by preventing the glucosidase in breaking down starch and disaccharides to glucose and moderate to high angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition activity in the prevention of β-cell dysfunction and apoptosis occurring in type 2diabetes.

By inhibiting these enzymes researchers suggested that the intake of eggplant should provide a strong biochemical basis for the management of type 2 diabetes by controlling glucose absorption.

Dr.Kwon YI, the lead author said, "phenolic antioxidant-enriched dietary strategy also has the potential to reduce hyperglycemia-induced pathogenesis linked to cellular oxidation stress".

Further analysis of the phenolic antioxidant in the eggplant, researchers conducted an experiment on the member chlorogenic acids (CGAs) in chronic diseases including diabetes, by searching the database of online medical literature.

* The biological properties of CGA in addition to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects was found in some studies.

* CGA was found to exert pivotal roles in glucose and lipid metabolism regulation and in related disorders, e.g. diabetes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), obesity, cancer, and hepatic steatosis.

* CGA demonstrated a wide range of potential health benefits, including its anti-diabetic, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-obesity impacts, which may provide a non-pharmacological and non-invasive approach.

Taken altogether, eggplant processed with a high amount of phenolic compound may be considered a functional vegetable in the prevention of chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes, and an adjunct therapy combined with primary medicine for the treatment of the disease.

#Healthyfood #Whitebuttonmushroom Suppresses the Proteins Associated with The Risk of #ColonCancer, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found an edible mushroom with the potential in reducing risk and treatment of colon cancer, some scientists suggested.

Primary colon cancer is a medical condition characterized the cell growth regularly that starts on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the colon.

After proliferating to the advanced stage, the cancerous cells can dispatch from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs far from the colon.

The exact causes of colon cancer are unknown. As of today, researchers still wonder why some people with the same health condition, family history, and diet are susceptible to the onset of the disease while others do not.

According to the statistic, colorectal cancer(cancer that starts in the colon or rectum) is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in men and women combined in the United States. About 71% of cases arise in the colon and about 29% in the rectum.

Dr. Milly Ryan-Harshman, in the study of Diet and colorectal cancer, suggested, "Whether red meat is a culprit in causing CRC remains unanswered, although any effect it might have is likely moderate and related to processing or cooking"

"The effect of dietary fiber on the risk of CRC has also been difficult to determine because fiber intake is generally low. Evidence that folic acid, calcium, and vitamin D reduce the risk of CRC is stronger"

" In particular, recent research indicates that calcium and vitamin D might act together, rather than separately, to reduce the risk of colorectal adenomas. There might also be an interaction between low folate levels and high alcohol consumption and CRC".

These results indicated a reduced intake of red meat, and an increase intake of nutrients from the fruits and vegetable including folic calcium and vitamin D are associated with a substantially reduced risk of colon cancer.

However, in the study conducted by the team led by Dr. Dana-Farber, Cancer Center oncologist Jeffrey Meyerhardt, MD appeared in the Aug. 15 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Western diet not only associate with colon cancer risk but also elevates the risk of recurrent colon cancer in colon cancer patients.

Mushroom is a standard name for white button mushroom, the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus produced above ground on soil or on its food source,

It is the genus A. Muscaria and belongs to the family Amanitaceae and has been cultivated in many cultures worldwide for food and health benefits.

Chemical constituents of white button mushrooms include
Astraodorol, Psilocybin, Lectin, adustin, ribonuclease, nicotine, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-6-methylbenzoic acid, orsellinic acid, melleolide, ergosterol, genistein, daidzein, daucosterol, genistin, uracil and D-mannitol(a).

Intake of dietary supplementation with Se-enriched white button mushroom can reduce the production of antioxidants produced by the colon tumor by up-regulating the integrity of cell mRNA expression levels.

Se-enriched white button mushroom inhibited the colon cancer cell by stimulating the production of GPx-1 and 2 and anti-antioxidant enzyme activity.

Selenite white button mushroom can positively increase GPx-1 and GPx-2 gene expression and GPx-1 enzyme activity in rat colon cells in the protection of cell DNA alternation due to overexpression free radicals, Dr. Maseko T, the leader in the team at The University of Melbourne suggested at the final report.

The study was published in the United States National Library of Medicine (NLM).

Furthermore, in the reassessment of the 2 epidemiological studies that demonstrated an inverse correlation between mushroom intake and the risk of cancer, researchers launched an investigation to evaluate whether white button mushroom affects the growth of breast and colon cancer cells.

Application of white button mushroom suppressed proliferation of colon cancer (HT-29, HCT-116) cells, without affecting proliferation of epithelial mammary MCF-10A and normal colon FHC cells.

The inhibition of cell proliferation by the mushroom was associated with the cell cycle arrest at the G0/G1 phase in HT-29 cells.

White button mushroom was also found to an up-regulated expression of p21 in the induction of apoptosis and inhibited Rb phosphorylation, a tumor suppressor protein in HT-29 cells,

The finding confirmed the results from the 2 epidemiological studies that white button mushroom process anti-colon cancer possibility.

Taken all together, dietary white button mushroom intake daily and regularly may have a significant effect in the prevention of colon and combined with the primary therapy in the treatment of colon cancer
