Herbal Burdock may have a potential effect on the protection of your gastrointestinal tract against the
Gastroprotective activity is an action that maintains the function of the digestive system against pathogens in the induction of gastric lesions.
The digestive system including the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder processes the function to digest foods and transfer the nutrients and fluids to the body's needs.
There is no single cause of the gastrointestinal disorder. Researchers suggested that the cause of the disorder can be attributed directly to the digestive system, or other systemic problems that facilitate the onset of disease.
However, according to epidemiological studies, bacterial infection, viral infection, inflammation, muscle dysfunction, gallstones, stress, and intake of certain anti-inflammatory drugs are associated with the onset of acute and chronic digestive disorders.
Dietary factors also play an important in the reduction and promotion of digestive dysfunction. people who are overeating, eating too much fatty food, not consuming enough fiber, and consuming too much alcohol and smoking are at a higher risk of digestive diseases, including ulcers and gastric acid reflux.
Dr. Linda Lee, M.D. in the article "5 Foods to Improve Your Digestion" posted on the John Hopkins Medicine shares five foods that promote healthier digestion and help you avoid common gastrointestinal symptoms, including whole grain, leafy green, lean protein, low fructose fruits, and avocado.
These results suggested if you are following a healthy diet with less saturated and trans fat, red meat, and processed foods and increased intake of fruit and vegetables, you may be free of gastrointestinal disorders.
Dr. Hyams JS at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition in the study "Diet and gastrointestinal disease" said, "Dietary manipulation can be an important part of therapy for several common gastrointestinal disorders" and " In chronic nonspecific diarrhea and functional constipation, the provision of appropriate amounts of fiber and fluids may ameliorate symptoms. A thorough understanding of the role of diet is essential to the management of these disorders".
Burdock is a plant in the group of biennial thistles, genus Arctium, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to the Euro.
The herb has been used for thousands of years in Chinese and other traditional herbal medicine as a diuretic, diaphoretic, and blood-purifying agent and to treat wounds and infections stomach ulcers, and other digestive problems.
In the study to reaffirm the traditional medicine use of herbal burdock for the treatment of digestive disorders, researchers at the State University of Campinas conducted an evaluation to examine the anti-ulcerogenic activity of the sesquiterpene onopordopicrin (ONP)-enriched fraction (termed the ONP fraction), obtained from burdock leaves.
In vivo models in rodents, mimicking this disease in humans. injection of ONP fraction (50 mg/kg, p.o.) significantly inhibited the mucosal injury induced by ethanol/HCl solution by 75%, indomethacin/bethanechol by 68.9%, and stress by 58.3% compared to nontreatment groups.
ONP fraction application also significantly increased serum somatostatin levels (82.1±4.1 vs. control group 12.7±4 pmol/L) and decreased serum gastrin levels (62.6±6.04 vs. control group 361.5±8.2 μU/mL) without alternating the altered the mucus production.
Further analysis found that gastrointestinal protection is attributed to the endogenous sulfhydryls in the ONP fraction.
Dr. De Almeida AB, in the final report, wrote, "antisecretory mechanism involved with the antiulcerogenic effect of the ONP fraction.
Additionally, the study evaluated the efficacy and the possible mechanisms involved in the gastroprotective effects of a chloroform extract (CE) of the roots from A. lappa and its fractions. conducted by the Universidade Federal do Paraná, researchers found that
* Oral pretreatment with CE (10, 30, and 100 mg kg(-1)) significantly reduced gastric lesions induced by ethanol by 61%, 70%, and 76%, respectively.
*Oral administration of CE (100 mg kg(-1) per day for 7 days) reduced the chronic gastric ulceration induced by acetic acid by 52%. Intraduodenal CE (100, 300, and 600 mg kg(-1)) reduced the total acidity of gastric secretion by 22%, 22%, and 33%, respectively,
* Oral administration (10, 30 and 100 mg kg(-1)) inhibited total acidity by 50%, 60% and 67%, respectively.
These results reaffirm the study of the State University of Campinas that Herbal Burdock processes a significant gastroprotective effect.
Dr. Dos Santos AC, the lead author after taking into account con and confounder said, "The CE protects animals from gastric lesions by reducing gastric acid secretion via inhibition of gastric H+, K+ -ATPase."
Taken atogether, Herbal Burdock processed bioactive ONP fraction and its chloroform extract (CE) may be considered functional food for the prevention and combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases.

#Phytochemical #Allicin May be a Potential Alternative Drug Against Atreptococcal Diseases, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Phytochemical Allicin may be the next generation of natural antibiotic alternatives for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases caused by the bacterium, some studies suggested.
Allicin is phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compounds, found abundantly in onion and garlic.
Phytochemicals, the natural chemical constituent, protect the plants against diseases and form their outer's color.
Under normal conditions, the immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections.
Foods and nutritional supplements, herbs may also play an important role in enhancing the immune system's defense against viruses and bacteria attacks.
Infection is a result of the battle between the invasion of foreign organisms' body tissues by disease-causing agents and the reaction of the immune system response.
Infectious disease is a condition caused by prolonged infection and the failure of the macrophages, the body's first line of defense of the immune system to completely destroy the invasive pathogens through the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the acute phase of infection.
Antibiotics are the most common treatment of infectious diseases. Treatment can be targeted more precisely with the diagnosis. The application of Antibiotics in most cases is quite effective in reversing bacterial infections.
However, by killing the infectious bacteria and healthy cells nearby, the medication may induce some side effects such as common gastrointestinal discomforts.
In serious cases, the use of antibiotics may also cause blood in the stool and persistent and intense stomach cramping or pain and uncontrol vomiting.
If you currently taking antibiotics, please make sure that you know all the side effects for preventive measures.
The research team of infectious disease at The Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dental Medicine in the concern of the side effects of antibiotics launched an investigation to test the antimicrobial activity of garlic allicin on oral pathogens associated with dental caries and periodontitis.
The experiment found that Allicin is effective against all the tested bacteria.
Injection of the broth dilution from Allicin inhibited the planktonic growth of the cariogenic, gram-positive species Streptococcus mutants, S. sobrinus, and Actinomyces oris at the concentration of 600 μg/mL or higher.
Gram-negative etiopathogenic species Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Fusobacterium nucleatum were inhibited by a minimum allicin concentration of 300 μg/mL.
Allicin at the concentration of (2,400 μg/mL). exerted the lowest effect against Porphyromonas gingivalis, an anaerobic, gram-negative pathogen and the bacterium most associated with chronic periodontitis.
Further analysis also discovered that Allicin inhibited levels of the arginine and lysine gingipains, the major virulence factors of this organism.
And, A gingipain-inactivated mutant demonstrated high sensitivity to allicin (<300 μg/mL), revealing that gingipains confer resistance to allicin.
After taking into account co and confounders, Dr. Bachrach G, the lead author wrote in the final report, "These results support the traditional medicinal use of garlic and suggest the use of allicin for alleviating dental diseases".
Additionally, in the reaffirming of the effects of Allicin against Streptolysin O (SLO), a potent cytolytic toxin and an important virulence factor produced by almost all strains of group A streptococci researchers revealed that application of Allicin neutralizes SLO in a dose- and time-dependent manner.
Moreover, A 15 min incubation of SLO with 35 microg allicin totally inhibited the hemolytic activity of SLO [IC(50) (concentration necessary to reach half maximum inhibition)=5.97 microg], the was equipotency similar to those of pure allicin (IC(50)=6.27 microg; P<0.05).
In contrast, fresh extract of garlic inhibited the SLO hemolytic activity at lower concentrations (IC(50)=1.59 microl; 1.9 microg allicin).
These result suggested that Allicin and allicin may be a potential alternative drug against streptococcal diseases.
Taken altogether, Allicin found in great amounts in garlic may be considered a functional bioactive compound for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infection, depending on the result of a larger sample size and multicenter in the human study.

#Herbal #Aloe Vera Promotes #GastricUlcer Healing By Inhibiting the Production of ProinflammatoryCytokines, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a natural herbal medicine for the treatment of gastric ulcers without inducing any side effects, some studies suggested.
Gastric ulcer is a medical condition characterized by open sores that develop on the inside lining of the stomach. If the open sores are developed in the upper part of the small intestine, it is a duodenal ulcer.
The most common cause of the gastric ulcer, represented over 30% of all cases is associated with the infection of H. pylori.
Certain medical conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and long-term use of some medications such as alendronate (Fosamax) and risedronate (Actonel) are also prevalent risk factors that elevate the disease onset.
The most common symptoms of a gastric ulcer are gastrointestinal discomforts, blood in your stool, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath with physical activity, and persistent fatigue.
Some patients with severe gastric ulcers may also experience symptoms of vomiting blood, feeling faint, or losing consciousness. However, 75% of patients with gastric ulcers do not feel any symptoms.
If you have some of the above symptoms, please make that you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of the condition.
Treatment of gastric ulcer is totally depending on the causes, such as histamine receptor blockers (H2 blockers) or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for patients with gastric ulcers induced by overproduction of stomach acid and the antibiotics for the infection caused by H. pylori.
Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan.
The herb has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits. Aloe vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of diseases, including wounds, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, elevated cholesterol, etc.
It is also one of many popular herbs studied in scientific ways with some conflicting results.
The ten main areas of chemical constituents of Aloe vera include amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, lignins, monosaccharides, polysaccharides, salicylic acids, saponins, and sterols. All ingredients work together in a synergistic way to create healing and health-giving benefits, according to Gertrude Baldwin in the article THE BENEFITS OF THE USE OF ALOE VERA IN HERBAL PREPARATIONS.
In the study to examine the effects of Aloe vera and sucralfate on gastric microcirculatory changes, cytokine levels, and gastric ulcer healing in 48 Male Spraque-Dawley rats divided into four groups as the following, group1 served a as control group, group 2 as gastric ulcer group without treatment, groups 3 and 4 as gastric ulcer treatment groups with sucralfate and Aloe vera, researchers found
* On day 1 after induction of gastric ulcer and before treatment the leukocyte adherence in postcapillary venule was significantly increased in the ulcer groups, an indication of immune response to the gastric damage when compared to the control group. The level of TNF-alpha was elevated and the level of IL-10 was reduced, an indication of overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
* In the ulcer groups treated with sucralfate and Aloe vera, leukocyte adherence was reduced in postcapillary venule. The level of IL-10 was elevated, but the level of TNF-. alpha had no significant difference, an indication of the leading process with the presence of anti-inflammatory cytokine.
* On day 8, the leukocyte adherence in postcapillary venule and the level of TNF-alpha were still increased and the level of IL-10 was reduced in the ulcer group without treatment.
Dr. Eamlamnam K, the lead scientist on the final days of the study, wrote, "Histopathological examination of the stomach on days 1 and 8 after induction of gastric ulcer showed that gastric tissue was damaged with inflammation. In the ulcer groups treated with sucralfate and Aloe vera on days 1 and 8, gastric inflammation was reduced, epithelial cell proliferation was enhanced, and gastric glands became elongated".
The results further confirm the efficacy of Aloe vera in promoting gastric ulcer healing, through the expressions of leukocyte adherence and TNF-alpha level, elevate IL-10 level.
Additionally, in the examination of the anti-inflammatory effects of Aloe vera on leukocyte-endothelium in the gastric microcirculation of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-infected of 36 male Sprague-Dawley rats divided into 3 groups: control, H. pylori-infected, and A. vera-treated group (200 mg/kg b.w., twice daily). researchers found that
* H. pylori-infected group shows a significant increase in the leukocyte adhesion cells and the TNF-alpha level compared with the control group on day 8.
* After treatment with A. vera H. pylori-infected group exerts a reduced the leukocyte adhesion and TNF-alpha significantly.
Dr. Prabjone R, the lead author at the final conclusion said, "Enhancement in leukocyte-endothelium interaction could be improved by the treatment of A. vera, associated with the reduction in TNF-alpha level".
Interestingly, in the acute gastric mucosal lesions induced by 0.6 M HCl and acid output Aloe vera endowed with gastric acid anti-secretory activity were found to protect the gastric mucosa at low concentrations against injurious agents. Its bioactive component, the Polymer fraction reduces 50% of the mRNA expressions of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) in the initiation of the pathogenesis of inflammation.
Taken together, herbal Aloe vera may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcers without inducing any side effects.
However, due to the limitation of the above studies, further data collection large example size and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of herbal Aloe vera anti-gastric ulcers possibilities.

The waxy substance produced by the liver and or intake from dietary sources plays a critical role in the production of sex hormones, the building block for the tissue, and assistance of bile production in the liver for digestion.
There are 2 main types of cholesterol;
* The good cholesterol or high-density lipoproteins (HDL) process the unique function in the transportation of cholesterol from the cells and tissue back to the liver. The good cholesterol also inhibits bad cholesterol over-accumulated in the cells.
* The Bad cholesterol or low-density lipoproteins (LDL) process the function to deliver cholesterol to cells to build membranes, for the synthesis of steroid hormones.
An unhealthy diet high in saturated and trans fats, red meat, processed foods, and less in fruits and vegetables and lifestyle can cause high levels of LDL, leading to the development of serious health problems including clogged arteries, heart disease, and stroke.
In "YOUR GUIDE TO Lowering Your Cholesterol With TLC" published by the US. Department of Health and Human Services, the author wrote, "Studies have proven that lowering LDL can prevent heart attacks and reduce deaths from heart disease in both men and women". and "It can slow, stop, or even reverse the buildup of plaque. It also can lower the cholesterol content in unstable plaques, making them more stable and less likely to burst and cause a heart attack. Lowering LDL is especially important for those who already have heart disease or have had a heart attack—it will reduce the risk of another heart attack and can actually prolong life. The level to which your LDL must be lowered depends on the risk for heart disease or having a heart attack that you are found to have at the start of treatment".
These results suggested that by following a healthy diet pattern and lifestyle high levels of bad cholesterol can be reversed regardless of other factors.
Alfalfa is a flowering plant in the genus Medicago, belonging to the family Fabaceae, It has been cultivated all over the world as hay for cattle feeding.
The leaves, sprouts, and seeds make medicine that has been used in traditional medicine over thousands of years to treat high cholesterol, asthma, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, enhance digestive system, bleeding disorders, kidney, urinary tract infections, etc.
North American Aboriginals have used Alfalfa seed as food, such as making bread and mush.
In the study of Fifteen patients with hyperlipoproteinemia (HLP), types IIA (n = 8), IIB (n = 3), and IV (n = 4) given 40 g of heat-prepared alfalfa seeds 3 times daily at mealtimes for 8 weeks with otherwise unchanged diet, researchers found that
* In patients with type II HLP alfalfa treatment caused after 8 weeks a maximal lowering of pretreatment median values of total plasma cholesterol from 9.58 to 8.00 mmol/l (P less than 0.001) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol from 7.69 to 6.33 mmol/l (P less than 0.01), which corresponds to decreases of 17% and 18%, respectively.
* Maximal decrease in these patients was 26% in total cholesterol and 30% in LDL cholesterol.
* Apolipoprotein B decreased in the same period from 2.17 to 1.43 g/l (P less than 0.05) in type II HLP, corresponding to a 34% decrease, whereas apolipoprotein A-I did not change.
These results suggested alfalfa seeds can be added to the diet to help normalize serum cholesterol concentrations in patients with type II HLP.
Furthermore, in the evaluation of the effect of an aqueous alfalfa extract (AAE) on production, performance, egg quality, and lipid metabolism of laying hens between 28 and 36 weeks of age randomly assigned to Four groups, fed with diets containing 0, 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.15% AAE, researchers showed that
* In relation to the control group, cholesterol, and triglycerides in the yolk, liver, and serum and serum very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were lower in 0.15% AAE-treated birds at day 42 and day 56.
* It also significantly decreased activities of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) which has the function of regulating the fatty acid synthesis and degradation, β-hydroxy-β-methylglutaryl-CoA (HMG CoA) reductase which has a function in controlling the metabolic pathway that produces cholesterol and other isoprenoids and fatty acid synthetase (FAS) at day 56.
These results indicated dietary AAE could be applied to improve eggshell quality and modify the lipid status of laying hens and eggs.
Interestingly, Dr. Yu CH, the lead author, in the study "[Study on the chemical constituents from the aerial parts of Medicago sativa and their hypolipidemic activity]" to isolate some chemical constituents from the aerial parts of Medicago sativa suggested the 2 new compounds soy saponin I (I), azuki saponin V (II) also process antihyperlipidemic activity.
Taken altogether, Herbal Alfalfa may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of high blood cholesterol.

#Tomatoes Inhibit the Risk of #Hyperglycemia In Diabetes by Normalizing the levels of HbA1c, Researchers Find
Kyle J. Norton
Hyperglycemia found in patients with diabetes is a condition of abnormally high blood glucose in the bloodstream.
Most cases of hyperglycemia are a result of poor diabetic control including unhealthy food and physical activity choices, medical conditions, and nondiabetes medications, particularly in people who frequent skipping or not taking enough glucose-lowering medication.
* Foot Complications are the condition caused by nerve damage that controls the leg, leading to numbness and severe pain in the feet. in the blood but also can cause kidney failure.
* Kidney disease is a condition that can reduce the function of the kidney in filtering the waste in the blood.
* Hypertension is a condition of high blood pressure that can lead to an increase in the risk of heart attack, stroke, and eye problems.
* Stroke caused by abnormally high blood pressure and high blood glucose.
* Gastroparesis is a condition caused by the reduced function of vagus nerves that control the movement of food.
Some researchers suggested by the change of lifestyle and moderate exercise accompanied by taking your medicine daily, hyperglycemia is preventable in diabetes.
The Mayo Clinic Staff in the article " Diabetes management: How lifestyle, daily routine affect blood sugar", wrote, "Healthy eating is a cornerstone of healthy living — with or without diabetes. But if you have diabetes, you need to know how foods affect your blood sugar levels".
"Physical activity is another important part of your diabetes management plan. When you exercise, your muscles use sugar (glucose) for energy. Regular physical activity also helps your body use insulin more efficiently".
And, "Insulin and other diabetes medications are designed to lower your blood sugar levels when diet and exercise alone aren't sufficient for managing diabetes. But the effectiveness of these medications depends on the timing and size of the dose. Medications you take for conditions other than diabetes also can affect your blood sugar levels".
In other words, by following a healthy lifestyle including diet, moderate exercise, and taking the required medicines hyperglycemia is controllable.
Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, and belongs to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.
With an aim to find a potential compound or whole food for the treatment of hyperglycemia, researchers examined the relationship between hyperglycemia and both serum carotenoids and the intake of vegetables and fruits.
The study induced 133 subjects with a history of diabetes mellitus or hyperglycemia diagnosed using a 5.6% cutoff value for hemoglobin A1c (High HbA1c group, n = 151) recruited from among inhabitants of a rural area in Hokkaido, Japan.
High HbA1c between 5.7% and 6.4% is an indication of a higher risk of diabetes.
According to the return of a questionnaire administered by public health nurses on the Intake frequencies of vegetables and fruits,* The odds ratio (OR) for high HbA1c was 0.49 on high intake frequency of carrot and pumpkin and the OR for DM was 1.21 (95% Cl: 0.79-1.84)
* There are no significant relationships between high HbA1c and intake frequencies of other vegetables and fruits.
* The ORs on high serum levels of alpha- and beta-carotenes, lycopene, beta-cryptoxanthin, and zeaxanthin, and lutein were 0.38 (0.22-0.65), 0.35 (0.21-0.59), 0.57 (0.35-0.93), 0.35 (0.20-0.59), and 0.88 (0.54-1.46) for high HbA1c, respectively.
In other words, tomatoes may have a strong effect against the onset of hyperglycemia by normalizing
Based on the finding, researchers said, "Intake of vegetables and fruits rich in carotenoids might be a protective factor against hyperglycemia".
Taken altogether, tomatoes may be considered functional foods for the prevention and treatment of hyperglycemia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of carotenoids in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Sinigrin, Prevents Plaques Build-Up on the Arterial Wall Against the Onset of Atherosclerosis through Its Antioxidant Activity
Kyle J. Norton
Sinigrin may be used as a natural and bioactive compound for the treatment of atherosclerosis, according to studies.
Atherosclerosis is a chronic medical condition characterized by plaque accumulated on the arterial wall, leading to stiffing and hardening of arteries.
Arteries are the blood vessels that carry the oxygen-rich blood to the heart and other parts of the body.
Atherosclerosis is one of the leading cause of heart disease and stroke, depending on the area of blocking in the arteries.
Plaque is a combination of cholesterol, calcium, cadmium, and other harmful chemical substances found in the blood.
The exact causes of atherosclerosis are not identified. Researchers as of today do not know why people with the same health condition, some are prone to the disease onset while others do not.
However, damage or injury of the inner layer of an artery, high blood pressure and cholesterol, and medical conditions such as arthritis, lupus or infections, or inflammation of unknown cause have been found to increase the risk of atherosclerosis.
Due to plaque accumulation associated with high blood cholesterol, some researchers suggested that
an unhealthy diet high in saturated fat and trans fat may be the major cause as well as increasing the severity of the condition.
Dt. Zhao Y said, "The WZSPs (n = 9) were fed a high-cholesterol and high-fat diet (HCFD). After continuous feeding, 3 WZSPs each were sacrificed at 6, 8, and 12 months, respectively, and the general clinical manifestations and serological indexes were detected".
And, " At 12 months, atherosclerotic lesions could be found in all major arteries, while lipid core, cholesterol precipitation, and calcium deposition appeared in the most serious sites".
The results clearly indicated the risk of atherosclerosis is substantially increased in animals fed with long-term high-fat diets.
In finding a natural compound for the treatment of atherosclerosis with no side effects, researchers investigated sinigrin anti-plaque accumulation in an animal model.
In ApoE mice, the injection of sinigrin suppressed the expression of the genes directly involved in the formation of atherosclerotic lesions.
Sinigrin lowered the blood levels of cholesterol LDH, triglyceride, and cholesterol in the serum without affecting the levels of HDL. In other words, sinigrin promoted the return of blood cholesterol back to the liver, therefore, repressing the risk of cholesterol accompanied by other substances to form plaques on the arterial wall in facilitating the onset of atherosclerosis.
Futhermore, injection of sinigrin also promoted lipid homeostasis, by reducing levels of the proteins associated with lipid metabolism.
Moreover, the bioactive compound also reduced the production of proinflammatory cytokines induced by the overexpression of free radicals and the accumulation of modified LDL within the intima of the artery. through its antioxidant activity.
More precisely, the bioactive compound reduced the expression of proinflammatory cytokines by suppressing the activation of the signaling protein associated with a wide range of processes such as immunity, and inflammation.
In ApoE-/- mice induced atherosclerosis, application of sinigrin exerted the similar effect by reducing the levels of serum concentrations of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), calcium (Ca2+), and pro-inflammatory cytokines.
Oral administration of sinigrin attenuated the expression of proteins involved in the initiation of atherosclerosis.
Taken altogether, sinigrin a bioactive ingredient in cruciferous vegetables may be considered a functional supplement for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, pending to the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Ginger Shows An Effect on Bacterial Infectious Diseases through the Presence of Various Phytochemicals, Scientists Say
Kyle J. Norton
Infectious diseases are medical conditions caused by pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungi.
Most cases of infectious diseases are contagious by spreading directly or indirectly, from one person to another.
In other words, if you kiss, or are coughed or sneezed on by an infectious person, you are at risk of developing the same infectious disease.
According to the statistic provided by the World Health Organization, 3 infectious diseases were ranked in the top ten causes of death worldwide in 2016.
More precisely, lower respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, and tuberculosis induced 3.0 million, 1.4 million, and 1.3 million deaths, respectively.
Conventionally, most cases of infectious diseases except those caused by viruses are treated with antibiotics.
If you are currently taking one of the antibiotics for the treatment of infectious diseases, please make sure you know all the side effects for preventive measures.
Diagnosis of the type of bacteria that causes the disease in most cases is important for precisive targeting.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.
The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.
Researchers on finding a natural compound as the antibiotic alternative for the treatment of infectious diseases with no side effects evaluated the antibacterial properties of Allium sativum (garlic) cloves and Zingiber officinale (ginger) rhizomes against multi-drug resistant clinical pathogens causing nosocomial infection.
The study included two crude garlic cloves and ginger rhizomes with 95% (v/v) ethanol tested against five gram-negative and two-gram positive multi-drug resistant bacterial isolates.
Application of the extracts showed significant inhibition against all tested isolates.
The highest inhibition zone of garlic (19.45 mm) was found in the Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), with a minimal inhibitory concentration as low as 67.00 µg/mL.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "Natural spices of garlic and ginger possess effective anti-bacterial activity against multi-drug clinical pathogens and can be used for prevention of drug-resistant microbial diseases and further evaluation is necessary".
Additionally, in order to know more information about ginger's antibacterial properties, researchers also examined the antimicrobial potency of fresh, natural, and commercial-dried Allium sativum and Zingiber officinale extracts against seven local clinical bacterial isolates such as Escherichia coli.
Compared to garlic extract, chloroform and diethyl ether extracts of Z. officinale showed a greater zone of inhibition of tested pathogens except for P. aeruginosa and E. coli.
Furthermore, all extracts of A. sativum and Z. officinale have a strong antibacterial effect compared to recommended standard antibiotics through activity index.
The efficacy of ginger against bacterial infectious diseases was attributed to the presence of various phytochemicals such as tannins, phenols, alkaloids, steroids, and saponins.
Dr. the lead scientist said, "These findings provide new insights to use A. sativum and Z. officinale as potential plant sources for controlling pathogenic bacteria and potentially considered as cost-effective in the management of diseases and to the threat of drug resistance phenomenon".
Taken all together, ginger processed with a high amount of bioactive compounds may be considered an antibiotic alternative for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infectious diseases, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
