#Phytochemical #Sulforaphane Combined with #Gemcitabine Induce a Cytotoxic Effect on #BreastCancer Cells, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Researchers may have found a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer with no side effects, according to studies.
Breast cancer is a medical condition associated with abnormal cell growth in the breast tissue due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of breast cancer (malignant breast neoplasm) start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissues of the breast either from the milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.

At the early stage of breast cancer, most patients experience the forming of lumps or modules on the breast or nearby breast tissue.

However, at the later stage, patients may experience symptoms of swelling of all or part of a breast, breast or nipple pain, nipple retraction and large lumps on the breast.

Some invasive breast cancer in this stage can also induce secondary metastasis through the blood and fluids circulation.

According to the statistic, women diagnosed with breast cancer at stage 0 and 1 have the 5 years of the survival rate of 100%. In 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in the U.S. alone and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8.

Therefore self-examination every month may be important to all women who are classified into the higher prevalent risk group.

The causes of breast cancer are unknown. Epidemiological studies suggested that age, gender, race, family history and menstrual, l and reproductive history are some of the prevalent risk factors for breast cancer.

Some researchers suggested that risk breast cancer in women who carry the mutated genes BRCA1 and 2 have 60% for the development of breast cancer before the age of 90.

Dithiolthiones are phytochemicals in the class of Organosulfides, found abundantly in cruciferous vegetables, garden sorrel, horseradish, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of breast cancer, researchers at the University of Michigan evaluated sulforaphane, a natural compound derived from broccoli/broccoli sprouts, efficacy in inhibiting breast cancer stem cells (CSCs) in tumor growth upon cell reimplantation in secondary mice and human breast cancer cell line.

Sulforaphane injection of (1-5 micromol/L) decreased the cancer cells by 65% to 80% in human breast cancer cells and reduced the size and number of primary mammospheres by 8- to 125-fold and 45% to 75% in tested mice, respectively.

Daily injection with 50 mg/kg sulforaphane for 2 weeks reduced breast cancer cell in the human cell line by >50%.

Sulforaphane eliminated breast CSCs in vivo and in the secondary mice.

Furthermore, by assessing the effect of SFN alone and in combination with a chemotherapeutic agent, gemcitabine, on the proliferative potential of MCF-7 cells, researchers also found that SFN shows cytotoxic effects on MCF-7 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner via an apoptotic mode of cell death.

A combinational treatment of SFN and gemcitabine on MCF-7 cells resulted in growth inhibition in a synergistic manner with a combination index.

The efficacy of SFN against MCF-7 was attributed to the inhibition associated with the anti-apoptotic and inflammatory gene, in a time-dependent manner, without causing harm to the nearby healthy cells.

Taken together, phytochemical sulforaphane may be considered a bioactive compound for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of breast cancer.

#Methylglyoxal (MGO) Found in Manuka Honey Shows a Strong Effect in Inhibting #Influenza, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Honey may have a profound effect in reducing the risk and treatment of influenza, some scientists suggested.
Influenza, also known as the flu, is an infectious disease caused by an influenza virus.

There are 3 types of flu influenza: A, B, and C. The influenza viruses A and B are considered seasonal flu that causes sniffling, aching, coughing, running and stuffy nose, and fever to over 20% of the general population.

Influenza virus type C tends to cause mild upper respiratory infections, similar to those of colds.

Healthy individuals who have influenza are usually recovered within one week.

However, people with immature and weakened immune systems such as young children under age 5, adults older than age 65 residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, and chronic illnesses, such as asthma, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, and diabetes are not only associated with the risk of influenza but also increase the risk of influenza deadly complication.

Pregnant women and women up to two weeks postpartum due to changes of the immune system and other organs have been found to make a woman more prone to influenza and influenza complications.

Some researchers also suggested that obese people are also at a higher risk of the onset of influenza.

Dr. Green WD, the lead author at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill suggested that obese individuals associated with the impairment of the adaptive immune response are at substantial risk of influenza.

The doctor team in the study " Obesity Impairs the Adaptive Immune Response to Influenza Virus" wrote, "Given the dramatic rise in obesity over the past few decades, this increased risk for influenza infection poses a serious public health threat because nearly 500 million adults and children worldwide are classified as obese".

"Obesity impairs the immune response to influenza and influenza vaccination through alterations of the cellular immune system. Compared with vaccinated healthy-weight adults, vaccinated obese adults have twice the risk of influenza or influenza-like illness despite equal serological response to vaccination".

The most common symptoms of influenza are high fever, runny nose, sore throat, muscle pains, headache, coughing, sneezing, and persistent fatigue.

Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener.

In finding a natural ingredient and whole food for the prevention and treatment of influenza, researchers at a joint study led by Nagasaki University the antiviral activities of honey samples were evaluated using MDCK cells.

Application of Manuka honey efficiently inhibited influenza virus replication which is related to its virucidal effects.

Manuka honey at the dose of 3.13 mg/mL also improved the function of zanamivir or oseltamivir by reducing the maximum concentration of effectiveness to nearly 1/1000th for their single use.

Dr.Watanabe K, the lead scientist said, "Honey, in general, and particularly Manuka honey, has potent inhibitory activity against the influenza virus, demonstrating a potential medicinal value.

Moreover, by re-examining the anti-influenza effect of Luatang honey, researchers suspected that the efficacy may be associated with the presence of methylglyoxal (MGO), a key component of Manuka honey.

By evaluating the anti-influenza viral activity of MGO and its potential in combination treatments with neuraminidase (NA) inhibitors, researchers found that
* Injection of MGO inhibited influenza virus A/WSN/33 replication 50% inhibitory concentration = 240 ± 190 μM; 50% cytotoxic concentration = 1.4 ± 0.4 mM; selective index (SI) = 5.8, which is related to its virucidal effects.

* MGO exerted a promising activity against various influenza strains.

* MGO increases the effect of NA inhibitors by decreasing the to  ∼1/100(th) of their single usage.

* MGO also demonstrates a synergistic effect with NA inhibitor against the oseltamivir-resistant virus.

Taken altogether, Luatang honey processed bioactive compound methylglyoxal (MGO) may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of influenza with no side effects, pending a larger and multi-center human study.

#Phytochemical #Indole3carbinol Inhibits the Risk of #ProstateCancer Through Cell Death Programming and Cell Cycle Arrest, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive compound isolated from the cruciferous vegetable for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Indole-3-carbinol is a phytochemical in the class of Indoles, by the breaking down of the glucosinolate glucobrassicin, found abundantly in cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, rutabaga, mustard greens, broccoli, etc.

Prostate cancer is a medical and chronic condition in which the cells of the prostate have become cancerous due to the alternation of the cells' DNA.

Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during Physical (rectum) exams.

Primary prostate cancer normally starts from the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissue and gradually spread to the deeper part of the prostate.

At the early stage, patients may not experience any symptoms, However, at the advanced stage, prostate cancer can induce symptoms of blood in the urine, frequent urination, and urinary difficulty.

The cancer cells at this stage can also travel a distance away from the prostate to invade other healthy tissue and organ, leading to secondary metastasis tumors.

According to the statistic, the 5-year survival rate for local and regional (stage 0 and 1) stages of prostate cancer is nearly 100%.

Therefore, men who are at higher risk of prostate cancer due to family history and increase in age and inherited gene changes should have their prostate gland checked annually.

Believe it or not, more than 80% of prostate cancers are diagnosed in men who are 65 or older.

Dr. Roberto Fabiani, the lead scientist at the University of Perugia suggested that people who follow the Western diet pattern are at increased risk of prostate cancer onset.

According to the results from the review of 12 observational studies included in the meta-analysis which identified a “Healthy pattern” and a “Western pattern”, he said, "The Healthy pattern was not related to PC risk (OR = 0.96; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.88–1.04) while the Western pattern significantly increased it (OR = 1.34; 95% CI: 1.08–1.65)".

In other words, by a change of diet from high in saturated and trans fat, red meat, and processed foods to a diet high in fruits and vegetables and whole grains, the risk of prostate cancer can be reversed.

In order to reaffirm the epidemiological evidence which suggested that intake of cruciferous vegetable intake is associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer, researchers at the Oregon State University, Corvallis assessed the bioactive compound indole-3-carbinol against the onset of prostate cancer.

In vitro and in vivo. application of indole-3-carbinol inhibits prostate cancer by both blocking initiation and suppressing prostate cancer progression. these results were associated with the induction of phases I and II detoxification pathways.

Injection of indole-3-carbinol inhibited the cell signaling pathways associated with cancer cell proliferation and survival.

Recently, indole-3-carbinol derivatives induced cancer cytotoxicity through the induction of free radical expression.

In the laboratory, I3C can induce G1 cell-cycle arrest and apoptosis in prostate cancer cells.

Futhermore, I3C and its derivative dimeric product 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM) inhibited the genes associated with the control of cell cycle, cell proliferation, signal transduction, and other cellular processes in prostate cancer cell lines.

Dr. Sarkar FH, the lead scientist, wrote in the final report of the experiment, "Because there is no effective treatment strategy for hormone-dependent and, most importantly, hormone-independent and metastatic prostate cancer, our strategies to sensitize prostate cancer cells to a chemotherapeutic agent by I3C and DIM is a novel breakthrough that could be used for devising novel therapies for prostate cancer".

More importantly, Wayne State University School of Medicine, in a study to confirm that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables provides phytochemicals, launched an investigation to examine the anticancer effect of indole-3-carbinol (I3C).

According to the study, I3C inhibits the growth of PC-3 prostate cancer cells
* through the Induction of G1 cell cycle arrest.

* Promoted the expression of regulators associated with cell cycle progression at the G1 and S phase and proteins associated with cancer cell apoptosis.

* Inhibited proteins associated with the progression of cell cycle division

* Inhibited protein in the promotion of proteins associated with cancer cell cycle division.

Taken altogether, the plant base Indole-3-carbinol isolated from the cruciferous vegetable may be used for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer with no side effects.

#Phytochemical #Piperines Process Anti #Asthmatic Activity by Scavenging Nitric oxide Associated with prevent the Bronchial Inflammation, Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural compound for the prevention and treatment of asthma with no side effects, according to the studies.
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing.

According to the statistics, in Canada, the number of people with asthma continues to grow. One in 12 people or 8% of the population had asthma in 2009, compared with 1 in 14 (about 20 million, or 7%) in 2001.

Asthma attacks had affected over 53% of people with asthma, compared to 57% in children in 2008.

Signs and symptoms of asthma can be triggered by airborne substances, such as pollen, dust mites, mold spores, pet dander or particles of cockroach waste. Respiratory infections, such as the common cold also be found to be the major contribution to asthma in children.

Although, researchers do not know why? people with the same health conditions in the same family, some are susceptible to the onset of asthma, while others do not. However, researchers do know, family history, race, being obese or obese, having another allergic disease, being a smoker, long-term exposure to smoking, and irritable chemicals are at increased risk of asthma development.

Dr. Mahdi Bijanzadeh, the lead scientist in the summary of " An understanding of the genetic basis of asthma" wrote, in the "Asthma is the most common chronic childhood disease in developed nations and its prevalence has increased in the world over the last 25 years. It is a complex disease with both genetic and environmental risk factors. Asthma is caused by multiple interacting genes, some having a protective effect and others contributing to the disease pathogenesis, with each gene having its own tendency to be influenced by the environment".

These results firmly suggested that people who inherited a mutated gene from their parents may also be at a higher risk of the disease.

According to Medscape, the 10 genes (IL1RL1/IL18, TSLP, IL33, SMAD3, HLA-DQ, ORMDL3, IL2RB, SLC22A5, IL13, and RORA), 6 of which were confirmed by EVE investigators (IL1RL1/IL18, TSLP, IL33, SMAD3, HLA-DQ, and ORMDL3). {Re9} 10 genes have been identified with a strong association with the onset of asthma.

Piperine is a phytochemical alkaloid in the class of organosulfur compounds, found abundantly in white and black pepper, long pepper, etc.

On finding a natural bioactive compound or whole food for the treatment of asthma, researchers at the JSS College of Pharmacy, Rocklands, examined the different plant extracts and phytoconstituents with the proven anti-asthmatic property.

Piper Longum L. Extract (20% Piperine) demonstrated a significant effect against human pathogens causing upper respiratory infection namely Haemophilus influenza, Streptococcus pneumonia, Streptococcus pyrogen, and Staphylococcus aureus.

Furthermore, researchers examined the effects of increasing levels of antioxidant in asthmatic patients against continued oxidative stress to determine the hypothesis of boosting the antioxidant defenses of asthma patient that could be beneficial as it may help thwart symptoms of lung disease and asthma.

The results of the experiment are astonishing.

Piper longum extracts at the same concentration of 20% piperine or piperine at 98% concentration, displayed a potent antioxidant activity by Nitric oxide radical inhibition activity method.

Dr. Nilani P, the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounder, said, "Piper longum extract (20% Piperine),..... and piperine (98%) could be utilized in alternate anti-asthmatic therapy since they play a vital role in scavenging Nitric oxide which could prevent the bronchial inflammation in asthmatic patients.".

The finding suggested that piperine processed anti-asthmatic properties through its antioxidants and antibacterial activity.

Taken together, piperine may be considered a bioactive compound for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for treatment of asthma, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#ManukaHoney Inhibits #Diseases Associated with Oxidativestress, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Honey may be the next pharmaceutical target to identify the single ingredient medicine for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, some scientists suggested.

Oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance in the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.
Due to their nature to become stable, free radicals readily donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Overexpression of free radicals is known to cause damage in contributing to the etiology of many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, cataracts, and cancer.
Antioxidants, on the other hand, are stable molecules with a unique function in the inhibition of oxidation.

Dr. V. Lobo, the lead author in the study "Free radicals, antioxidants, and functional foods: Impact on human health" wrote, " A balance between free radicals and antioxidants is necessary for proper physiological function. If free radicals overwhelm the body's ability to regulate them, a condition known as oxidative stress ensues", and

"Free radicals thus adversely alter lipids, proteins, and DNA and trigger a number of human diseases. Hence the application of an external source of antioxidants can assist in coping with this oxidative stress. Synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene and butylated hydroxyanisole have recently been reported to be dangerous for human health".

These results suggested that regardless of the causes of the overexpression of free radicals, intake of dietary sources of antioxidants from a supplement, herbs, fruits, and vegetables can be beneficial in restoring the healthy ratio of free radicals and antioxidants and preventing the onset of oxidative stress.

Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

In order to understand the honey antioxidant activity which has been under intensified study by the science community, a joint study led by the researchers conducted was conducted in an animal model.

Ethanol-induced gastric ulcers in rats were randomly assigned to control, ethanol (ulcer), omeprazole, and manuka honey.

Honey-treated rats displayed a clinically significant decrease in the ulcer index by completely protecting the mucosa from lesions and preserving gastric mucosal glycoprotein.

Application of manuka honey also decreased gastric mucosal MDA, the marker of oxidative stress and plasma TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 concentrations, the set of proinflammatory cytokines produced by the ethanol injection.

The results were attributed to the manuka honey in stimulating the production of antioxidant enzymes which were suppressed by the injection of ethanol in the tested rats.

The finding suggested that manuka honey exerted a strong antioxidant activity by balancing the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes in the treatment group.

In other words, manuka honey inhibited the oxidative stress caused by the overexpression of free radicals in the initiation of the onset of the ulcer.

Further differentiation to reaffirm the effects of manuka honey in the inhibition of gastric ulcers in the rat model, researchers examined three different concentrations of honey applied to the tested rats.

During the experiment, researchers found that all 3 different concentrations display a strong effect in It reducing the mucosal myeloperoxidase activity, lipid peroxidation (MDA), and the inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) compared to the untreated control group.

In other words, manuka honey protects the rat stomach by inhibiting the overexpression of free radicals and proinflammatory cytokines in inducing oxidative stress.

Application manuka honey also showed a significant increase in enzymatic (GPx and SOD) and non-enzymatic (GSH) antioxidants which were reduced due to ulcer and levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10.

The Flow cytometry assay also indicated that treatment of rats with manuka honey has normalized cell cycle distribution and significantly lowered apoptosis in gastric mucosa.

The information collected strongly support the use of manuka honey for the treatment of chronic ulcer and the preservation of mucosal glycoproteins.

Dr. Almasaudi SB wrote in the final report, "Its (manuka honey) effects are due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that resulted in a significant reduction of the gastric mucosal MDA, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 and caused an elevation in IL-10 levels.

Taken all together, there is no doubt that manuka honey high in antioxidants can be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress.

#Healthyfood #Ginger Inhibits All Paraneters Associated with the Risk of Type 2 #Diabetes, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Ginger may be next-generation whole food used for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes, with no side effects, some scientists suggested.
Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose due to either cell in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

Researchers do not know what causes the pancreas to die off or receptor sites to clog up. However, they do know obesity or overweight, gender, ethnicity, age, family history, gestation diabetes, are associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

Some researchers also suggested that people with certain medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome. and high blood pressure is more prone to the onset of the disease.

The most common symptoms of type 2 diabetes are an increased thirst that won't stop with water intake, increased hunger (especially after eating), dry mouth, frequent urination, and unintentional weight loss.

If you experience some of the symptoms above, please make you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of diabetes.

According to statistics, diabetes is one of the most common diseases in the US. Approximately 10% or 29.1 million people in the United States have diabetes, accompanied by 8.1 million that are undiagnosed and unaware of their condition.

About 1.4 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in the United States every year. More than one in every 10 adults who are 20 years or older has diabetes.

Dr. Rita R. Kalyani in the study to examine the increase in age and risk of type 2 diabetes wrote, "The unprecedented aging of the world's population is a major contributor to the diabetes epidemic, and older adults represent one of the fastest growing segments of the diabetes population".

"Almost one-third of U.S. adults over the age of 65 years have diabetes. Approximately half of those are undiagnosed, and an additional one-third of older adults have prediabetes" and "management of older adults with diabetes is clearly more complicated given the observation that they commonly have multiple coexisting medical conditions that can impact clinical management".

Compared to the general population risk of type 2 diabetes, the results clearly stated, the risk of type diabetes in the elderly is 3 fold higher and the management of the disease is more difficult due accompanied by other medical conditions, such as high blood pressure and cholesterol

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find a natural whole food for the prevention and treatment of diabetes with little or no side effects, researchers looked into the effects of ginger consumption on glycemic status, lipid profile, and some inflammatory markers in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial, included 70 type 2 diabetic patients allocated randomly into a ginger group that consumed 1600 mg of ginger and the control group consumed 1600 mg wheat flour daily for 12 weeks.

Patients treated with ginger demonstrated a significant effect in reducing the levels of fasting plasma glucose, 3 months average glucose concentration, and insulin resistance.

Furthermore, the blood profile of the treatment group also displayed lower levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol, a hormone associated with lipid peroxidation. compared to the placebo group.

There were no significant differences in high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein LDL, and TNFα, the inflammatory cytokine between the two groups.

The findings firmly indicated ginger improves insulin sensitivity and some fractions of lipid profiles and reduced inflammation in type 2 diabetic patients.

Additionally, with an aim to reaffirm the effects of ginger against the development of type 2 diabetes and diabetic complications, researchers investigated the effect of ginger supplementation on glycemic indices in Iranian patients with type 2 diabetes.

The double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial included 20-60 -year-old patients with type 2 diabetes who did not receive insulin.

Participants in the intervention and control groups received 3 g of powdered ginger or placebo (lactose) (in capsules) daily for 3 months.

At the end of the 3 months, researchers showed that all parameters associated with diabetes were reduced substantially in the treatment group compared to the control.

More precisely, the differences between the ginger and placebo groups were statistically significant as follows: serum glucose (-19.41 ± 18.83 vs. 1.63 ± 4.28 mg/dL, p < 0.001), (Hemoglobin A1C)HbA1c percentage (-0.77 ± 0.88 vs. 0.02 ± 0.16%, p < 0.001), insulin (-1.46 ± 1.7 vs. 0.09 ± 0.34 μIU/mL, p < 0.001), insulin resistance (-16.38 ± 19.2 vs. 0.68 ± 2.7, p < 0.001), high-sensitive CRP (-2.78 ± 4.07 vs. 0.2 ± 0.77 mg/L, p < 0.001), paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) (22.04 ± 24.53 vs. 1.71 ± 2.72 U/L, p < 0.006), total antioxidant capacity (TAC) (0.78 ± 0.71 vs. -0.04 ± 0.29 µIU/mL, p < 0.01) and MDA (-0.85 ± 1.08 vs. 0.06 ± 0.08 µmol/L, p < 0.001) were significantly different.

Where paraoxonase ((PON)-1 is an enzyme associated with the protection against lipid oxidation, Malondialdehyde (MDA) is an oxidative stress marker.

Dr. Shidfar F, the lead scientist said, "The 3 months supplementation of ginger improved glycemic indices, TAC, and PON-1 activity in patients with type 2 diabetes".

Taken altogether, ginger may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of type 2 diabetes with no side effects.

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM may have a profound and positive effect in reducing the risk and treatment of colon cancer, according to studies.

Colon cancer is a chronic condition caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the colon.

Most cases of colon cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon tissue. It is one of the most slow-growing cancers that take years to develop. Therefore, most patients in the early stage of cancer do not experience any symptoms.

However, at the advanced stage, cancer can cause severe rectal bleeding and persistent abdominal pain due to the larger size tumor that has pressed on the nearby nerve cells and blood vessels.

According to the statistics, the risk of CRC increases with age; the median age at diagnosis for colon cancer is 68 in men and 72 in women.

The data of colon provided by CDC showed that every year, 97,000 new cases of colon cancer are diagnosed.

Besides sharing the common symptoms with other types of cancer such as unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, persistent fatigue, and tiredness, patients with colon cancer may also experience symptoms of change of bowel movement, rectal bleeding, and persistent abdominal discomforts, such as cramps, gas or pain.

If you experience some of the above symptoms, please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Although there are many risk factors involved in the onset of colon cancer, some researchers suggested aging may be one of the most prevalent risks.

Donna Myers on the examination of the time needed for a polyp or growth of tissue in the lining to cancer and the percentage of colon cancer cases in people age 50 or older, said, " By the time colorectal cancer is diagnosed, it has often been growing for several years, first as a non-cancerous polyp and later as cancer. Research indicates that by age 50, one out of four people has polyps".

The results strongly suggested that if you are at the age of 50 and have a higher risk of colon cancer, you may want to have a colonoscopy done every 3 years.

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, etc.

Researchers in finding the natural compounds for the treatment of colon cancer examined the two anti-cancer agents (doxycycline or 3,3'-diindolylmethane) on HCT-116 and HT-29 colon cancer cell lines.

Injection of the 2 compounds resulted in profound changes in the intracellular content of several lncRNAs (by up to 100 times secreted by tumors into the bloodstream.

The results strongly suggested that by examining the levels of lncRNAs colon cancer expression can be monitored through tumor relapse and metastasis.

In order to reveal more information about 3the Sulindac (SU; 320 ppm) effect on colon cancer, researchers examined two natural compounds, 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM; 250 ppm) and curcumin (CUR; 2000 ppm), with or without lower doses of SU could affect carcinogenesis.

Colon tumors were significantly reduced by SU 320 ppm (62 % reduction over Controls), by DIM and CUR without, or with SU 80 and 160 ppm (50, 53, and 58 % reduction, respectively) but not by SU 80 ppm alone.

Futhermore, total tumors (colon and small intestine) were found to reduce substantially by SU (80 and 320 ppm) and by DIM and CUR.

Apoptosis in the normal mucosa was significantly increased by SU 320 ppm and slightly increased by DIM and CUR with or without SU.

The combination of SU with DIM or Cur also caused a slight reduction in Survivin-Birc5 expression observed with all the treatments compared to controls.

Where Survivin-Birc5 protein is found to inhibit caspases associated with the blocking of cancer cell death. The protein is highly expressed in most cancers associated with poor clinical outcomes.

The results strongly reaffirmed the anti-colon cancer activity of the DIM and CUR combination.

Taken altogether, DIM used alone or combined with another bioactive compound may be considered a supplement for the prevention and comn=bined with primary medicine for the treatment of colon cancer, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of DIM as o form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
