Artichoke may have a positive and profound effect in reducing the risk and treatment of leukemia with no side effects, according to studies.
Leukemia is a medical condition arising from the abnormal white blood cells produced by the bone marrow.
There are several forms of leukemia, including acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).
CLL and AML are the most common cancers in adults and ALL are most common in children.
In contrast to chronic leukemias which take months or years to develop, acute leukemias start and develop within days or weeks.
According to Leukemia Research, Leukemia causes the death of approximately 68,000 every year. Adults are 10 times more likely to develop the disease, compared to children.
And, Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is the 7th most common cancer in the U.S. The 5-year survival rate for all subtypes of leukemia is 61.4 percent.
Certain types of blood disorders, exposure to radioactive substances, and certain medication are some of the prevalent risks of cancer.
Some researchers suggested that cigarette smoking may contribute to a large part of AML onset compared to other subtypes.
Dr. Fircanis S in the study of "The relation between cigarette smoking and risk of acute myeloid leukemia: an updated meta-analysis of epidemiological studies" wrote in the final report, "current and ever smokers have 40% (RR 1.40, 95% CI 1.22-1.60; P < 0.001) and 25% (RR 1.25, 95% CI 1.15-1.36; P < 0.001) increased risk of developing AML when compared with non-smokers".
And, "Intensity of smoking of <10, 10-20, 20-30, and >30 cigarettes per day was associated with RRs of AML of 1.27, 1.36, 1.55, and 1.77, respectively (P < 0.001 for trend). Duration of smoking of <20 and >20 years was associated with RRs of 1.07 and 1.44, respectively (P < 0.001 for trend). Cumulative smoking of <10, 10-20, 20-30, and >30 pack-years was associated with RRs of 1.13, 1.23, 1.39, and 1.71, respectively (P < 0.001 for trend)".
The results strongly suggested that cigarette smoking is a major risk factor for acute myeloid leukemia and the risk of AML is increased depending on how many cigarettes a person smokes a day.
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.
Researchers on finding a natural whole food for the treatment of leukemia against the overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines investigated the extract and 3 participating compounds of artichoke leaves (bracts on the human leukemia cell line.
Injection of the artichoke extract and compounds was showed to modulate the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced activation of proinflammatory protein (NF-κB) and the intracellular proinflammatory reactive oxygen species.
Low concentrations of the extract inhibited the enzyme AKR1B1 associated with the activation of NF-κB and the expression of pro-inflammatory genes.
The efficacy of the extract in the attenuation of the expression of the inflammation-related enzymes COX-2 and MMP-2 was attributed to the inhibiting activity of NF-κB.
In other words, artichoke reduced the production of inflammatory cytokines by inhibiting the levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species in activation of the protein NF-κB.
By suppressing the enzyme AKR1B1, artichoke reduced the inflammatory expression in facilitating the onset of leukemia.
Furthermore, in order to reveal more information about artichoke extract (CCE) against leukemia researchers evaluated the CCE effect on the growth of L1210 and HL-60 leukemia cells.
Injection with a variety of concentrations of CCE (500-2500 microg/microL) for 24 h resulted in dose-dependent inhibition of leukemia cell growth observed by the cell cycle arrest in S phase.
CCE also induced apoptosis of leukemia cells, detected by the sub-G(0) cell population and apoptotic DNA fragmentation.
The findings suggested that CCE inhibits leukemia cells through several mechanisms including the proteins associated with cell cycle division, inflammation, and cell degradation.
Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of leukemia, pending the result of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#ThymeHoney Monitores the #EndometrialCancer Cell Proliferation Through its Agonist/Antagonist Properties, Scientists Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Honey may have a significant effect on reducing the risk and treatment of endometrial cancer, some scientists suggested.
Endometrial cancer is a chronic condition characterized by the irregular cell in the tissue of the endometrium.
Most cases of endometrial cancer start on the cells in the surface of the inner lining of the endometrium. At the advanced stage, after penetrating into the deeper layers, malignant cancer cells may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs.
Endometrial cancer has been found to metastasize to the rectum, bladder, pelvic and para-aortic lymph nodes and vagina.
The exact causes of endometrial cancer are unknown. Epidemiological studies suggested that the increase in age, more years of menstruation, having never been pregnant, obesity and use of hormone therapy are some of the major prevalent risk factors associated with endometrial cancer.
Some researchers indicated that hormone change in the women's body such as higher androgen and estrogen levels and lower levels of progesterone due to polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOs) also is a major cause of endometrial cancer.
Dr. Navaratnarajah R, the lead author in the concern of the association of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOs) and the risk endometrial cancer, said, "Several studies have been published that appear to support this association, and it is common practice among gynecologists and physicians to prescribe hormonal treatment to reduce this perceived risk".
"The mechanism(s) underlying any association is also unclear, but it is again widely assumed that chronic anovulation, which results in continuous estrogen stimulation of the endometrium unopposed by progesterone, is a major factor".
These results clearly state that long-term overexpression of estrogen and reduced levels of progesterone are associated with the onset of the disease. However, the study of PCOs in the endometrial cancer risk should also be taken into account obesity, hyperinsulinemia, and hyperandrogenism, which are also features of PCOS and risk factors for endometrial carcinoma.
In the association of PCOs and endometrial cancer mortality, the doctor team indicated, there is no evidence to link the increased mortality from endometrial cancer in women with the syndrome.
The study once again reaffirms the link of the estrogen therapy used in menopausal women for the treatment of climate symptoms. In other words, long-term high levels of estrogen compared to progesterone in the body are the major cause of endometrial cancer.
Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.
In finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of endometrial cancer, researchers examined the honey influence the oestrogenic activity.
The chemical composition and the potential of Greek honey extracts (thyme, pine, and fir honey) were classified to evaluate the most inhibitory activity against the endometrial cancer cells Ishikawa line.
Compared to other honey, thyme honey processes the highest total phenolics, phenolic acids, and hydroxymethylfurfural.
Thyme honey inhibited the expression of Ishikawa by reducing the cancer cells viability.
Moreover, the application of thyme honey also exerted a significant effect against Ishikawa and other cancer cell lines by inhibiting cancer cell proliferation, inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest.
Futhermore, the inhibition of Thyme honey was also found to be associated with its function in the mediation of estrogen via modulation of the estrogen receptor activity, as estrogen agonists or antagonists in cancer cell lines in a tissue type-specific manner.
The efficacy of thyme honey anti endometrial cancer was probably associated with its polyphenols and phenolic acids (vanillic acid and protocatechuic acid and p10 hydroxybenzoic acid) as these compounds have been proven to inhibit cancer-related pathways and processes
These results indicated that thyme honey monitored cell proliferation may be useful in cancer prevention, particularly, in endometrial cancer, through its agonist/antagonist properties.
Dr. Mari Jaakkola, the lead scientist in the conclusion of the study said, "Honey, especially the thyme honey, may be used as an alternative to sugar, while its incorporation in the human diet or as a food ingredient may prevent cancer-related processes, promoting thus the health of consumers".
Taken altogether, Thyme honey processed major bioactive compounds polyphenols and phenolic acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with other primary therapy for the treatment of endometrial cancer without inducing any side effects

#Phytochemical #Allicin Inhibits the Onset of #LiverCancer Involving Apoptotic Cell Death Through Cell Cycle Arrest, Studies Show
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a natural compound for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer with no side effects, according to the studies.
Liver cancer is a condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the liver tissue.
Since the organ is a soft tissue with fewer nerves, most liver cancer patients are diagnosed in the later stage of cancer and do not experience any symptoms in the early stage.
At the advanced stage, liver cancer cells can travel a distance away to infect the healthy cells of other tissue and organs, leading secondary metastasis.
According to the statistic, liver cancer remains the fifth most common malignancy in men and the eighth in women worldwide. In Canada, 2,500 Canadians were diagnosed with liver cancer. The disease caused 1200 death in 2017.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common form of primary liver cancer.
Besides the most common symptoms associated with all cancers, liver cancer patients may experience symptoms of abdominal swelling, jaundice, and white, chalky stools.
Although aging, gender, ethnicity, other liver diseases, hepatitis viruses, and obesity is considered one of the major risk factors associated with the onset of the disease.
Dr. Aleksandrova K, the lead author examined the obesity in the risk of liver cancer, said, "Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease associated with obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes is an increasingly recognized trigger for liver cancer in Western populations characterized by low prevalence of established risk factors for liver cancer such as viral hepatitis and hepatotoxin exposure".
And, "Recent evidence has implicated several molecular pathways in obesity-associated liver cancer. These include insulin resistance leading to increased levels of insulin and insulin-like growth factors, chronic inflammation, adipose tissue remodeling, a pro-inflammatory cytokine, and adipokine secretion, and altered gut microbiota".
Allicin is phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compounds, found abundantly in onion and garlic.
With an aim to find a natural compound with no side effects for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) which is the most prevalent type of liver cancer globally and ranks first among the cancer-related mortalities in Taiwan, researchers examined the modes of cell death mechanism induced by allicin, a major phytochemical of crushed garlic, in human hepatoma cells.
Allicin treatment was found to induce autophagic cell death in human HCC Hep G2 (p53(wild-type)) cells.
Furthermore, allicin induced apoptotic cell death through proteins associated with pro apoptosis
Moreover, allicin activates the reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduction to induce cytotoxicity against the human HCC Hep 3B (p53(mutation)) cells without causing harm to the nearby healthy cells.
The finding strongly suggested that allicin protects the normal through its antioxidant activity without inducing inhibition of the overexpression of free radicals.
Additionally, allicin treatment induced apoptotic cell death through gene (p53) involved cell cycle arrest similar to that of Hep 3B cells.
Dr. Chu YL, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders, wrote, "allicin induced cell death in human hepatoma cells through either autophagy or apoptosis".
And, "(allicin) might be a potential novel complementary gene therapeutic agent for the treatment of apoptosis-resistant cancer cells".
Taken together, phytochemical allicin may be considered a bioactive compound for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of liver cancer.

#Phytochemical #Piperine Shows a Strong Effect on Obesity-Related Inflammatory Metabolic Dysfunctions., Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Piperine may be considered a natural ingredient for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction in obese patients, some scientists suggested.
Piperine is a phytochemical alkaloid in the class of organosulfur compound, found abundantly in white and black pepper, long pepper, etc.
Obesity is a medical condition characterized by excess body fat accumulated in the body over time.
While overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to the height.
According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight, while a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity. According to the statistic, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese, a leading cause of metabolic dysfunction.
In other words, obesity is a metabolic disorder that predisposes patients to numerous diseases which not only cause a financial burden to the health care system but also increase the reduction of quality of life of the patients.
A metabolic dysfunction is caused either by the abnormal chemical reactions or disruption of chemical production in the body, altering the normal metabolic process.
Some researchers suggested that obesity's metabolic dysfunction may be a result of the liver or pancreas do not function properly due to fat accumulated in the organs.
There is no coincidence that the widespread of obesity over the past several decades are correlated to the promotion of the Western diet. Some researchers firmly suggested that diet rich in saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed foods and less in fruits and vegetables and whole grain is associated with the onset of obesity.
Dr. Bortolin RC, the lead scientists in the study to examine the metabolic parameters and gut microbiota changes in rat fed with the Western diet suggested: "diet, and not the obese state, was the major driving force behind gut microbiota changes" and "WD-fed rats developed obesity and obesity-related comorbidities independent of major alterations in gut microbiota composition (dysbiosis), whereas CAF-fed rats developed the greatest dysbiosis independent of obesity".
The result clearly stated that long-term intake of the Western diet induces metabolic syndrome and obesity. In other words, Obesity is not the cause of metabolic dysfunction.
On finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of widespread obesity-induced metabolic dysfunctions in the Western world, researchers examine the antimetabolic phytochemical Piperine isolated from the black pepper.
The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 8-week trial included the assessment of the efficacy of metabolic changes versus a placebo.
In a total of 86 overweight subjects selected to the study, 41 patients (2/14 F/M; age 43.7 ± 8.5; BMI 30.3 ± 3.5 kg/m(2)) were assigned to the supplemented group and 45 (29/16; age 40.7 ± 10.2; BMI 30.0 ± 2.7) to the control group.
At the end of 8 weeks, the supplement group showed a decrease of levels of a hormone produced by adipose cells that regulates energy balance by inhibiting hunger. High levels of leptin hormone is an indication of leptin resistance, found in overweight and obese patients.
The levels of a hormone associated with the stimulated appetite increased food intake and promoted fat storage also decreased in the supplement group. Hormone ghrelin is found abundantly in overweight and obese subjects.
Furthermore, the supplement group also showed a decrease of inflammation observed by the levels of C-reactive protein and an increased resting energy expenditure significantly, compared to placebo.
Compared to the decreased significantly levels of adiponectin in the placebo, the supplement group also showed an increase in the hormone protein that regulates glucose levels as well as fatty acid breakdown.
These results suggested that the supplement group demonstrates a greater change of metabolic dysfunction compared to the placebo.
In other words, introducing piperine into the overweight and obese diet might be useful for the treatment of obesity-related inflammatory metabolic dysfunctions.
Additionally, in order to understand the effect of piperine on overweight and obese insulin resistance, researchers evaluated the bioactive chemical activity in mice feeding a high-fat diet (HFD) for 13 weeks.
Before injecting the mice with piperine, researchers found that mice fed with a high-fat diet displayed elevated plasma concentrations of insulin and glucose and hepatic lipid levels.
Administration of piperine (50 mg/kg body weight) only normalized the concentrations of insulin and glucose and hepatic lipid levels but also increased the levels of adiponectin and inhibited the protein which plays an important role in mediating lipogenesis, fatty acid oxidation and insulin signaling in the livers of mice.
In gene observation, piperine injection also increased the expression of carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 (CPT1) gene involved the regulation of fatty acid oxidation in the liver, an indication of resist weight gain.
Dr. Choi S, the lead researcher suggested, piperine significantly decreased insulin resistance in mice fed with high-fat diet by increasing the levels of adiponectin and activating the pathway associated with fatty acid oxidation.
Taken together, piperine may be considered a bioactive compound for the protection of overweight and obese against the inflammatory and metabolic dysfunctions and weight gain without inducing any side effects

(PubMed)

#PhyticExtract In in the Promotion of #PancreaticBetaCell Function in Reducing the Risk of Diabetes, Scientists Find
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a natural resource for the prevention and treatment of diabetes with no side effects, according to the studies.
Diabetes is a medical and chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose.
Diabetes is either caused by cells in the pancreas dying off due to the immune system mistakenly attacking the sell in the pancreas or receptor sites clogged up as a result of the excess fat and cholesterol in the bloodstream.
Researchers do not know why the immune system attacks its own tissue. Either they can explain people follow a lifelong intake of the Western diet, only some are susceptible to the onset of the disease, while others do not.
There are many risk factors such as age, ethnicity, family history, impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance, being overweight or obese, and a sedentary lifestyle. associated with the onset of the condition, epidemiologically. However, many people with some of the risk factors have never developed diabetes.
Some researchers suggested that an unhealthy diet with high amounts of saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed foods, and low amounts of fruits and vegetables as that of the Western diet is the most common risk factor of diabetes in the Western world.
Dr. David Hefner, in the concern of the Western diet in risk of diabetes, wrote, "The typical Western diet-red meat, high-fat dairy products, refined grains and desserts-may increase your chances for Type 2 diabetes".
And, "The news isn't particularly shocking but offers a new view on the health risks of a typical Western diet as a whole, rather than simply attacking elements within the diet such as fatty foods".
The results strongly suggested the risk of diabetes can be decreased with a change of diet pattern, from the Western diet to a healthy diet with high amounts of fruits and vegetables.
If you experience some of the belove symptoms such as increased thirst that can not be resolved by intake of liquid, frequent urination, extreme hunger, and unexplained weight loss, you may have type 2 diabetes. Please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.
Phytic acid (Inositol hexaphosphate) are phytochemical of the organic acid found abundantly in nuts, sesame seeds, soybeans, wheat, pumpkin, beans, almonds, etc.
On finding a natural bioactive compound for the treatment of diabetes with no side effects, researchers examined the effect of the phytic acid supplement on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.
Diabetic rats were fed rodent chow with or without phytic acid supplementation for thirty days. According to the assay used for the experiment, phytic acid supplement treated group showed an increase in average food intake and a decrease in body weight gain compared to the diabetic and normal control groups.
Compared to other groups, the phytic acid supplement-treated group also exerted a downtrend in intestinal amylase activity. The spike in random blood glucose in the treatment group was also lower compared to others.
Furthermore, the treatment group also displays reduced serum triglycerides and increased total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol levels, and levels of serum alkaline phosphatase and alanine aminotransferase activities, an indication of improvement in insulin sensitivity.
Moreover, levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines also lower in phytic acid supplement treated group compared to other groups.
Dr.Omoruyi FO, the lead scientist at the end of the study, wrote, "Phytic acid supplementation may be beneficial in the management of diabetes mellitus".
Additionally, researchers randomly assigned six groups of rats fed to test the anti-diabetes of phytic acid, for 3 weeks as follows:
* Groups 1 and 2 were fed formulated diets supplemented with zinc or without zinc respectively.
* Groups 3 and 4 were fed formulated diets supplemented with zinc plus phytic acid extracted from sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) or commercial phytic acid respectively.
* Groups 5 and 6 were fed formulated diets supplemented with a phytic acid extract from sweet potato or commercial phytic acid respectively.
At the final day of the experiment, researchers found that phytic acid extract consumption from sweet potato and commercial phytic acid plus zinc supplement lowered blood glucose levels.
However, phytic acid supplementation showed no significant decrease in the activity of pyruvate kinase involved in the insulin stimulation of this enzyme activity, compared to the group-fed formulated diets.
Groups fed phytic extract from sweet potato also exerted a significant increase in the activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase in the promotion of pancreatic beta-cell function, compared to the other groups.
Taken together, phytochemical phytic acid may be used for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment and management of type 2 diabetes.

#Sinigrin Inhibits the Risk of #Atherosclerosis By Inhibiting the Plaque Accumulation on the Arterial Wall., According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Sinigrin may be used as a bioactive ingredient for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, according to studies.
Atherosclerosis is a medical condition caused by plaques accumulating on the wall of the arteries, leading to the narrowing of the arteries in transporting oxygenated blood to the heart and other parts of the body.
Depending on the blood obstruction, atherosclerosis can induce different types of heart disease and stroke.
Plaque is made of cholesterols, calcium, and other toxic substances, including cadmium.
According to the statistics provided by Atherosclerosis Open Acess, 32% of deaths account for atherosclerosis. 13.8% prevalence is among adults of 20 years and above. In 2010, the coronary heart disease mortality rate was about 60%.
Risk factors of atherosclerosis include high blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes, being overweight or obese, unhealthy diet, family history of heart disease, and physical inactivity, particularly smoking.
Some researchers suggested that since cholesterol makes up a big part of plaque, an unhealthy diet with high saturated trans fat, red meat, and processed meat may be the major cause of atherosclerosis.
In other words, the Western diet is one of the major culprits that cause the majority of cases of atherosclerosis.
Dr. Meifang Wang, the lead researcher in the study "Western Diet Increases Inflammatory Responses and Atherosclerosis Progression via IGF-1 Receptor in ApoE-Deficient Mice" said, "....lowered circulating IGF-1 increases atherosclerosis progression in atherosclerosis-prone apolipoprotein E-deficient mice (ApoE−/−) while increased circulating IGF-1 downregulates vascular pro-inflammatory cytokine gene expression, reduces systemic and vascular oxidant stress, vascular cytokine expression, and decreases atherosclerosis progression".
And, "the pro-inflammatory phenotype that is enhanced by WD in ApoE−/− mice is further enhanced by specific IGF1R deficiency in monocytes/macrophages, and may consequently increase atherosclerosis progression".
The results suggested that the Western diet-induced atherosclerosis progression through the increase of production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and decrease of the function of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) as a mediator of anabolic responses in many cells and tissues.
Sinigrin is a phytochemical glucosinolate, belonging to the family of glucosides found abundantly in Brussels sprouts, broccoli, the seeds of black mustard, etc.
Scientists on finding a natural bioactive compound for the treatment of atherosclerosis examined the effect of sinigrin against plaque accumulation on the arterial walls.
On atherosclerosis in ApoE-/- mice, injection sinigrin exerted a significant effect in the inhibition of the serum concentrations of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), calcium (Ca2+), and pro-inflammatory cytokines associated with plaque accumulated on the wall of the arteries.
Furthermore, oral administration of sinigrin attenuated the mRNA expression of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), which form a part of the immunoglobulin superfamily in inflammatory and immune responses.
Moreover, injection also reduced the expression of genes C-C motif chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2), and CCL5 on aorta tissues associated with the risk of atherosclerosis.
The expression of low-density lipoprotein was also reduced by the injection of sinigrin observed by some key regulators of cholesterol such as sterol regulatory element-binding protein-2 (SREBP-2).
Interestingly, increased the concentration of sinigrin at the dose up to 100 μg/ml also significantly suppressed the levels of Tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) and nuclear translocation of NF-κB, cell signaling protein (cytokine) involved in systemic inflammation.
Additionally, at a contraction ut to 100 μg/ml, sinigrin inhibited the c-Jun-NH (2)-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling pathway which plays a critical role in regulating cellular differentiation.
The findings strongly suggested that sinigrin inhibited the onset of atherosclerosis by lowering the low-density lipoproteins and mechanisms associated with the inflammatory induction of plaque accumulation on the arterial wall.
Dr. Jang YJ, the lead scientist wrote, "Sinigrin decreases the TNF-α-stimulated VCAM-1 expression through the suppression of NF-κB and MAP kinases signaling pathways, Overall, sinigrin has the potential to be used in reducing the risks of atherosclerosis".
Taken altogether, sinigrin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of atherosclerosis, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#AvocadoSoybeanUnsaponifiables(ASUs), Show a Profound Effect in Reducing the Symptoms and Progression of Osteoarthritis, Studies Show
Kyle J. Norton
Avocado may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis, some scientists suggested.
Avocado is a commercially valuable fruit cultivated in tropical climates throughout the world.
The fruit is a green-skinned, pear-shaped fruit that ripens after harvesting and is native to the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, and Central America, belonging to the flowering plant family Lauraceae.
Osteoarthritis is a group of diseases involving progressive denegation of joints, including articular cartilage and subchondral bone.
According to the statistic, osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder in the US, affecting over 10% of men and 13% of women aged 60 years or older. The disease can also affect the younger population, after a traumatic injury.
.
Epidemiological studies suggested that symptoms progress slowly and contribute to work disability and reduced quality of life.
Dr. Hofmann S, the lead scientist in the team of arthritis in the examine the mechanical causes of osteoarthritis in young adults suggested that certain conditions such as femoroacetabular impingement (a condition in which extra bone grows along one or both of the bones that form the hip joint) are a very common cause of secondary osteoarthritis (OA) in the young adults" and "
It is an important co-factor in the better recognized pre-arthritic deformities such as residual hip dysplasia (RHD), Perthes disease and slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE)".
These results clearly indicated genetic mutation and mechanical deformity are major causes of osteoarthritis in the younger adult besides athletic injury.
Some scientists proposed that the development of femoroacetabular impingement may be a result of a repetitive injury to the proximal femoral physis that occurs during a critical period of development.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis, a disease associated with the progressive denegation of joints, researchers at the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth assessed the anti-OA of the compounds Avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (ASU) which have shown some promises for OA.
By searching the database of medical literature, researchers found 4 randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trials of ASU.satisified the guideline and criteria.
The doses per day in the 4 studies are in the range between 300 mg and 600 mg.
3 out of 4 studies suggest that ASU is effective for the symptomatic treatment of OA.
Furthermore, the Hôpital Léopold Bellan launched a follow-up study to investigate the efficacy of preparations with avocado-soybean unsaponifiables (ASUs) in osteoarthritis (OA) patients in the hip, included 163 patients, 102 men and 61 women (mean age 63.2 +/- 8.7 years).
Participants in the study are patients with regular painful primary OA of the hip (European League Against Rheumatism 1980 criteria) and a joint space still > or = 1 mm were selected entered a prospective, multicenter, randomized, parallel group, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 2 years duration.
The ASU treatment group showed a lesser joint space loss compared to the significantly greater loss in the placebo group.
The clinical parameters in the 2 groups did not differ significantly throughout the study.
These results indicated a significant effect of ASU against the progression of joint loss in OA patients.
Dr,. the lead scientists said, "SU significantly reduced the progression of joint space loss as compared with placebo in the subgroup of patients with advanced joint space narrowing".
Taken altogether, avocado-soybean unsaponifiable's (ASUs) may have a profound effect in reducing the symptoms and progression of osteoarthritis.
