Arthritis is a group of diseases associated with the inflammation of the joints. According to epidemiological studies, osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are the 2 most common types of arthritis.
According to the information provided by the arthritis foundation, arthritis affects over 54 million people in adults and is diagnosed by doctors. Osteoarthritis is the most prevalent type in the US, affecting 31 million Americans.
Depending on type and the location affected, arthritis can be classified into over 100 conditions, but the most common types of arthritis include
* Osteoporosis is a condition of thinning of bone and bone tissues as a result of the loss of bone density over a long period of time.
* Osteoarthritis (OA), is a condition caused by the wear and tear on a joint due to aging, affecting over 25 million people in the United States alone.
* Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic disorder as a result of inflammation, affecting mostly the flexible (synovial) joints and tissues and organs in the body.
* Polymyalgia arthritis is a condition of inflammatory rheumatic disease-induced pain, stiffness, and tenderness in large muscles, including muscles shoulders, and pelvic girdle.
* Fibromyalgia in the newly proposed criteria for the classification of fibromyalgia are 1) widespread pain in combination with 2) tenderness at 11 or more of the 18 specific tender point sites(a) as a result in responding to pressure.
As of today, there is no cure for arthritis, medications used in conventional medicine are to reduce pain, and symptoms and improve the quality of life for patients to carry out daily activities.
3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, etc.
In the urgency to discover a natural compound for the treatment of diseases associated with osteoclastogenesis, researchers investigated the therapeutic efficacies of DIM on experimental arthritis.
The study included a rat model of adjuvant-induced arthritis (AIA), with daily AIA paw swelling.
According to the clinical and histologic indices of inflammation and tissue damage, the administration of DIM attenuated AIA in animal models.
Furthermore, DIM also reduced the expression of several inflammatory cytokines, associated with the onset of arthritis. However, the anti-inflammatory function of DIM could not prevent the development of arthritis.
Moreover, in the differentiation of the DIM effect on activation-induced cytokine, researchers found that the bioactive compound effectively inhibits the expression of RANKL, leading to the blockade of osteoclastogenesis and consequently an alleviation of experimental arthritis.
Where Receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-Β ligand (RANKL) is a protein involved in the activation-induced cytokine, osteoprotegerin ligand, and osteoclast differentiation factor.
Dr. the lead researcher wrote, "DIM has shown anti-arthritis activity in animal models via inhibiting the expression of RANKL, and thus may offer potential treatments for arthritis and associated disorders".
Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of arthritis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of 3,3'-diindolylmethane in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Lycopene Kills #HeadandNeckCancer Cells by Exhibiting the Protein Associated with Cell Death Programming and Apoptosis., According to Study
Kyle J. Norton
Cancer is a group of diseases caused by cell growth irregularly in the affected tissue caused by DNA alternation.
Head and neck cancer is a group of cancers originating from the mouth, nose, throat, larynx, sinuses, or salivary glands.
According to the statistics provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, approximately 4,300 Canadians are diagnosed with cancer of the head and neck every year. Head and neck cancer also causes the death of nearly 1,610 Canadians.
The overall survival rate of 5 years after diagnosis is 62% tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and viral infection including human papillomavirus (HPV) infection (for oropharyngeal cancer), and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection (for nasopharyngeal cancer).
Some researchers suggested that diet patterns may have a strong impact on the onset of the disease.
Dr. Shu-Chun Chuang, the lead scientist wrote, "A dietary pattern score combining high fruit and vegetable intake and low red meat intake, was created. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the dietary items on the risk of HNC were estimated with a two-stage random effects logistic regression model".
And, "Higher dietary pattern scores, reflecting high fruit/vegetable and low red meat intake, were associated with reduced HNC risk (per score increment OR=0.90, 95% CI=0.84–0.97)".
In other words, if you are a Western diet follower, your risk of head and neck cancer increased substantially compared to those who follow a traditional diet.
The most common symptoms of head and neck cancer are totally depending on the location of the cancer including a lump or sore that does not heal, a sore throat that does not go away, trouble swallowing, or a change in the voice.
Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,
Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.
In the urgency to find a potential compound for the treatment of head and neck cancer, researchers examined the lycopene overload and cytotoxic effects on HNSCC cells.
According to the cell analysis, lycopene at a dose of >10 µM for >24 h inhibited the growth of FaDu and Cal27 cells in a time‑ and dose‑dependent manner.
Furthermore, the injection of lycopene not only provided the clearest increase in growth inhibition by cell apoptosis but also limited the cancer cell invasive activity at a dose of 25 µM.
More precisely, lycopene killed cancer cells by exhibiting the protein associated with cell death programming and apoptosis.

#Herbal #Bilberry Inhibits the Risk of #CardiovascularDisease (CVD) by Decreasing LDL-C/TG and Increasing HDL-C, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Cardiovascular disease is a general term for diseases associated with the blood vessels and heart, including coronary artery diseases (CAD) affected by obstruction of arteries and stroke affected by the capillaries in the brain.
In other words, the disease in CVD is vary depending on the affected locations. Atherosclerosis is also the most common cause of cardiovascular disease.
The exact causes of CVD are not clear. However, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes mellitus, lack of exercise, obesity, high blood cholesterol, poor diet, and excessive alcohol consumption, are found to be associated with an increased risk of CVD.
According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association, over 84 million people in the US suffer from some form of cardiovascular disease, causing the death of 2,200 people a day.
Sadly, approximately 15 million U.S. adults have coronary heart disease.
Out of many risk factors, some researchers suggested that high blood pressure found in 103 million U.S. adults one of the major causes of CVD. Believe it or not, approximately 54% of strokes and 47% of coronary heart diseases, worldwide, are attributable to high blood pressure.
Dr. Chen-Yi Wu, the lead scientist said, "The cardiovascular and expanded-cardiovascular mortality risks were lowest when systolic blood pressures were 120 to 129 mm Hg, and increased significantly when systolic blood pressures (SBPs) were ≥160 mm Hg or diastolic BPs were ≥90 mm Hg".
And, " The impacts of stage 2–3 hypertension on mortality risks were significantly increased among women. The mortality risks of hypertension were not attenuated with older age".
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrub in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant has been used as herb in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer,
In the urgency to find a natural ingredient for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), a leading cause of death researchers examined the bilberry's beneficial effects on CVD risk reduction.
The study included women (n=25) and men (n=11) who consumed 150 g of frozen stored bilberries 3 times a week for 6 weeks.
According to the tested assays, consumption of bilberries showed a decrease of total cholesterol, LDL-C, TG, glucose, albumin, γ-glutamyltransferase, and a positive increase in HDL-C.
All parameters associated with the risk of CVD were decreased substantially at the end of the study. In other words, bilberry reduced the risk of CVD by promoting the blood flow to the heart and other parts of the body.
Interestingly, in men, favorable changes were observed in total cholesterol, glucose, albumin, aspartate aminotransferase, γ-glutamyltransferase, and HDL-C compared to women.
The results strongly support the regular use of bilberries as a dietary source of fruit to reduce the CVD risk, by decreasing LDL-C/TG and increasing HDL-C.
Dr. Habanova M, after taking into account co and confound wrote in the final report, "Changes in other parameters were not significant, for both women and men. Thus, the regular intake of bilberries can be important to reduce CVDs risk, by decreasing LDL-C/TG and increasing HDL-C".
Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functioning remedy for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Betanin Inhibits #LungCancer by Reducing the # of Microvessels Formation and Increasing the Expression of a Protein Associated With Programmed Cell Death.in Vitro and Vivo
Kyle J. Norton
The lungs are a pair of spongy, air-filled organs located on either side of the chest with the main function to process gas exchange during breathing.
In other words, the lung transfer life-giving oxygen into the blood supply and remove carbon dioxide produced by the cell's metabolism from the blood.
Additionally, the lung is also the first line of defense against inhaled particles and prevent the circulation of emboli such as blood clot (thrombus), fat globule (fat embolism), a bubble of air or other gas (gas embolism), or foreign material.
Lung cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the lung as a result of the alternation of cells in the lung tissue.
Most cases of lung cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the lung tissue, before proliferating into deeper layers to induce a tumor.
At the early stage, due to the very small size of the tumor, most patients are asymptomatic. However, as the proliferation continues over time, as the later stage, the primary lung cancer not only can elevate the general symptoms shared by all cancers accompanied by localized specific symptoms such as severe pain and bleeding but also travel a distance away from the lung to cause secondary metastasis via circulation of blood and fluids.
The most common secondary metastatic cancers from primary lung cancer are the adrenal gland, bones, brain, and liver.
Out of many risk factors associated with lung cancer, smoking has been found to have a strongly negative implication to inducing the early onset of the disease.
Dr. Ozlü T, the lead scientist said, "Nowadays, around one-third of adults are known to be smokers, and smoking rates are increasing among the female population. It is estimated that deaths attributable to tobacco use will rise to 10 million by 2025, and one-third of all adult deaths are expected to be related to cigarette smoking".
And, " The association between cigarettes and lung cancer has been proven by large cohort studies. Tobacco use has been reported to be the main cause of 90% of male and 79% of female lung cancers. 90% of deaths from lung cancer are estimated to be due to smoking. The risk of lung cancer development is 20-40 times higher in lifelong smokers compared to non-smokers".
The finding strongly suggested the risk of lung cancer in smokers is substantially higher compared to non-smokers.
Betanin is a phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.
In the urgency to find a natural compound for the treatment of lung cancer, researchers examined the chemopreventive activity of betanin by oral consumption was investigated in two mouse lung tumor models.
The study included Vinyl carbamate (VC) and benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P) induced lung tumors in female A/J mice, followed by the treatment of betanin in drinking water.
Betanin significantly decreased tumor multiplicity and tumor load induced by Vinyl carbamate (VC) and benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P).
Precisely, tumor multiplicity and tumor load were decreased by 20% and 39% in the VC lung model, and by 46% and 65% in the B(a)P lung model, respectively.
Betanin inhibited the lung tumor by reducing the number of microvessels formation and increasing the expression of a protein associated with programmed cell death.
In other words, the lung tumor inhibitory effects were involved in the induction of apoptosis and angiogenesis.
The findings strongly suggested that betanin significantly inhibits lung tumorigenesis in vivo.
Moreover, compared to capsanthin, cranberry, red onion skin, and short and long red bell peppers, betanin showed a vitro inhibitory effect on Epstein-Barr virus early antigen (EBV-EA) induction using Raji cells.
According to the results from the lung bioassays, betanin also revealed a significant lung tumor inhibitory effect.
Taken altogether, betanin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of betanin in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Allyl-isothiocyanate (AIT) Found in #Sinigrin Exerts A strong Anti-#Bacterial Infection Activity, Researchers Show
Kyle J. Norton
Bacterias are a class of microorganisms consisting of a single cell with a simple internal structure with a number of different shapes.
Not all bacterias are harmful to humans. Some are essential to human life, with benefits related to improving digestive function, preventing overexpression of harmful disease-causing bacteria, and the synthesis of essential nutrients and vitamins.
Believe it or not, the human gut contains over 10 trillion of bacteria including at least 1000 different species of known bacteria with more than 3 million genes.
In a healthy individual, the levels of microorganisms in the gut are balanced.
The gut microbiota plays a critical role in breaking down foods that the stomach and small intestines cannot digest, stimulating the production of vitamins K and D, protecting the intestinal against damage caused by bad bacteria, and increasing immune functioning.
Bacterias that cause disease are called pathogenic microorganisms.
Epidemiological studies suggested that Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria is one of the bacteria that causes tuberculosis, killing over 2 million people a year, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa.
Other pathogenic bacterias include Streptococcus and Pseudomonas, Shigella, Campylobacter, and Salmonella.\
According to the statistics, pathogenic bacterial infection is a leading cause of death of infants in developing countries.
In the finding of a bioactive ingredient with antibacterial activity, researchers examined allyl isothiocyanate (AIT) derived from the glucosinolate sinigrin in E. coli O157:H7 numbers in food products.
Injection of AIT showed greater antimicrobial activity at low pH values. In other words, at pH 4.5 and 5.5 the MIC was 25 microL/L, while at pH 8.5, 500 microL/L was required to inhibit bacterial growth.
Furthermore, bacterial decomposition was found at the highest rate in water at 37 degrees C.
Moreover, in bacterial enzymes (the thioredoxin reductase and acetate kinase), AIT at 10 to 100 microL/L was able to significantly inhibit both enzymes, but only 1 microL/L was needed to decrease the activity of thioredoxin reductase.
Interestingly, in a Nanocomposite carboxymethyl cellulose films tested on Escherichia coli O157:H7-containing sinigrin (SNG) prepared by stirring 2% (w/v) carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and 2% (w/v) glycerol (as a plasticizer) in distilled water with or without SNG (an antimicrobial precursor) as a 99% pure reagent (pSNG) or as a crude extract (cSNG), researchers found that
* In beef pieces measuring 6 × 5 × 2 cm(3) (L × W × H) were dipped in an E. coli O157:H7 broth suspension containing >8 log10 CFU ml(-1) and were drained for 3 min over a sterile cloth, the CMC and NCMC films without SNG were not antimicrobial against E. coli O157:H7; however, NCMC and CMC films with SNG were highly antimicrobial.
* After 5 days at 8°C, E. coli O157:H7 was reduced more than 4 log10 by the NCMC•pSNG film.
* The reduction remained almost the same until 18 days at 8°C when E. coli O157:H7 was reduced >5 log10 CFU g(-1) meat.
The findings strongly support the use of sinigrin for food storage against bacteria.
Taken altogether, sinigrin a bioactive ingredient in cruciferous vegetables may be considered a functional supplement for the treatment of bacterial infection, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.
However, intake of bioactive in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care, as liver toxicity may be induced if overdosed.

#Herbal #Artichoke Combined with Probiotics For the Treatment of #ChronicConstipation, Researchers Suggest
Kyle J. Norton
Constipation is a condition of hard and dry stool that are infrequent or hard to pass.
Acute constipation reversed in a few days mostly is caused by staying in a sitting position for long periods of time that kinks up your colon and restrains stool from passing through.
Chronic constipation is a condition characterized by difficult, infrequent, or perceived incomplete evacuation of bowel movements with less than 3 bowel movements a week,
Chronic constipation other than structural and medical problems is normally caused by a diet with low fiber accompanied by the intake of certain medications such as calcium channel blockers, and narcotics.
The total fiber intake per day is 25-35 grams, is recommended for people with constipation and general health, depending on your sex, age, and weight.
If you are taking the requirement of fiber daily, but experience symptoms of excess colon gas and flatus, you should cut down on soluble fiber first.
In order to maintain good colon health against constipation, people with chronic constipation with no structural and medical problems should follow a high-fiber diet accompanied by increased fluid intake and moderate exercise.
Some researchers suggested that there is a correlation between psychological disorders such as depression in the risk of constipation.
Dr. Janique G. Jessurun, in the study of the relationship between psychiatric diagnoses and constipation wrote, "In the stratum of patients older than 60 years, all psychiatric categories except for substance-related disorders were significantly associated with a higher prevalence of constipation".
And, " In the elderly, all measured psychiatric diagnoses are strongly associated with an increased prevalence of constipation".
In other words, adults who are 60 years of age and over with psychiatric disorders are at a higher risk of constipation.
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas, bloating, etc.
Researchers on the finding of natural therapeutics for chronic constipation researchers evaluated the effects of probiotic-enriched artichokes on treatment preference, symptom profile, and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production in constipated subjects, compared with ordinary artichokes.
The double-blind method included 20 constipated patients (3M/17F; 38.8 ± 14.4 years) using a computer-generated randomization list. Each patient consumed 180 g per day of ordinary artichokes or artichokes enriched with Lactobacillus paracasei IMPC 2.1 for 15 days (daily dose of 2 × 10(10) CFU).
80% of participants preferred probiotic-enriched artichokes to ordinary ones. Satisfactory relief of symptoms was significantly higher (P = 0.0014) during the probiotic-enriched artichoke period.
The Bristol chart cluster scores were significantly higher in the combined treatment group (3.3 ± 1.2, 2.9 ± 1.3 2.2 ± 1.2) compared to the baseline, ordinary artichokes, and probiotic-enriched ones, respectively.
Furthermore, GSRS constipation was significantly lower (13.9 ± 0.9, 10.2 ± 0.8, 8.3 ± 0.9; P = 0.032) in the combined treatment group compared to the probiotic group and baseline.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "This trial shows a positive effect on symptoms in constipated patients after intake of probiotic-enriched artichokes".
In order to understand more information about artichokes in the promotion of constipation, researchers assessed the suitability of some vegetables, particularly olives, and artichokes, to vehicle probiotic strains into the gastrointestinal tract.
The study included 8 volunteers (3M/5F age 40+/-14 y) who integrated their normal diet with artichokes (180 gr) enriched with 20 billion of L. paracasei LMGP22043 for 15 days.
There were no significant differences in the microbiological counts throughout the experimental period. However, the treatment group showed a significant increase in butyric and valeric acids with a concomitant decrease in lactic acid.
The treatment also reduced the fecal beta-glucuronidase activity and abdominal distension and feeling of incomplete evacuation.
Taken altogether, artichoke combined with probiotics may be considered a functional formula for the treatment of patients with chronic constipation with no side effects, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Chrysin (Chr) Found in #Honey Speeds Up Wound Healing by Reducing the Overexpression of Production of Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines
Kyle J. Norton
Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system with an aim to protect the body against the invasion of microbial invasion.
After receiving the message from the brain associated with tissue damage or wound, the immune white blood cells of the first line of defense stimulate the production of blood palette to cover the wound or damage and the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to kill off all the invaders which try to enter the body through the skin open.
Most cases of microbial invasion are stopped in the acute phase of infection. However, at this phase, overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines can lead to nearby cell death and the formation of scars.
However, if the immune system fails to destroy all microbial invasion in the acute phase of infection within a set period of time in 3 to weeks, it will adapt to the new change, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation.
The continued production of low levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines overtimes can cause damage to organ tissues, leading to irreversible chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.
Honey, the rich golden liquid is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
Liquid is considered one of the healthy food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener many people.
On finding a natural therapy for the treatment of diseases associated with acute and chronic inflammation, researchers examined the effects of Chr-loaded poly (ε-caprolactone)/poly (ethylene glycol) (PCL/PEG) nanofibrous mats in wound healing.
Chrysin (Chr) is a naturally occurring flavone with a wide spectrum of biological functions found in honey.
According to the tested assays, Chr-loaded poly (ε-caprolactone)/poly (ethylene glycol) (PCL/PEG) nanofibrous mats reduced overexpression of production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in subjects induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS).
Furthermore, excessive production of free radical nitric oxide (NO) associated with the induction of oxidative stress is also inhibited by the administration of Chr-loaded poly (ε-caprolactone)/poly (ethylene glycol) (PCL/PEG) nanofibrous mats.
Dr. Deldar Y, the lead scientist said, "These results suggest that the proposed natural substance-based nanofibrous mats can accelerate the wound healing process with ...anti-inflammatory activities".
Additionally, in order to reveal more information about Chr-loaded poly (ε-caprolactone)/poly (ethylene glycol) (PCL/PEG) nanofibrous mats anti-inflammatory activity, researchers evaluated its role in tissue regeneration over the repair.
During the epithelial healing process, the nano-fibers exerted anti-inflammatory activity observed by the inhibition of the expressions of pro-inflammatory markers-Cycloxygenase-2 (COX-2).
Interleukin-6 (IL-6), the pro-inflammatory cytokines produced during the acute phase of inflammation was also reduced by the injection of the nano-fibers, similar to that of the aforementioned study.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Considering the role of COX-2 and IL-6, the novel methodology used in this study can also be developed as an assay for anti-inflammatory matrices for wound healing".
Taken altogether, honey processed high amount of Chrysin (Chr) may be considered an anti-inflammatory remedy for the prevention and treatment of acute and chronic inflammation with no side effects, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.
