Scientists may have found a herbal medicine that processes strong liver protective effects, some studies suggested.
The hepatoprotective effect is the action of prevention of the liver against liver damage or toxicity.
There is no single cause of liver diseases. Researchers suggested that virus such as hepatitis A, B, C, long-term excessive alcohol drinking and genetic mutation inherited from the parents is the major risk factors associated with the early onset of the diseases.
Some researchers suggested overweight and obese and congenital diseases such as Hemochromatosis and Wilson’s disease also are prevalent risk factors for liver damage and diseases.
Liver damage and disease can also be caused by long-term intake of certain medications, such as paracetamol, and Illegal drugs such as cocaine.
In the article on liver diseases, 24 Health also includes autoimmune diseases that cause inflammation to the liver.
Sadly, according to the statistic, the mortality rate infected by viral hepatitis have increased by 63% from 890,000 in 1990 to 1.45 million in 2013, according to a review of data collected in 183 countries.
Symptoms of liver diseases include persistent jaundice and gastrointestinal discomforts, abdominal pain, and swelling, leg and ankle swelling, itching, and pale color of stool.
Please check with your doctor to rule out liver disease and damage possibility, if you are experiencing some of the above symptoms.
Andrographis paniculata also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.
The herb has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chicken pox, etc.
The Ingredients
Besides the main ingredient andrographolides, giving the plant a bitter taste, other ingredients include diterpene lactones, such as neoandrographolide, andrographiside, 14-doexy-11, 12-didehydro andrographolide, etc., flavonoids viz., oroxylin, wogonin, andrographolides A, B, C, D, E, F.
As of today, despite enormous advances in modern medicine, conventional medicine can only focus to reduce symptoms of liver diseases. There is no completely effective medicine that can stimulate hepatic function, offer complete protection of the organ, or help to regenerate hepatic cells.
In the finding of a natural hepatoprotective agent which can help to relieve the pressure of conventional medicine in patients with liver damage or diseases, researchers at the Vinayaka Missions University conducted a study to evaluate the liver protective activity of herbal Andrographis in liver injury in rats.
After subcutaneous injection of 50% v/v carbon tetrachloride in liquid paraffin at a dose of 3 mL/kg on alternate days for a period of 4 weeks to induce chronic liver damage, the Male Wistar rats were treated with methanol and aqueous extracts of herbal Andrographis orally at a dose of 845 mg/kg/day.
At the end of the experiment, researchers found that* Herbal Andrographis extracts demonstrate clinically significant activity in comparison to a standard drug.
* Hepatic steatosis, hydropic degeneration, and necrosis caused by the injection of the carbon tetrachloride completely disappeared in the standard and extract-treated groups.
Further analysis also discovered herbal Andrographis extracts exhibited hepatoprotective action against carbon tetrachloride-induced liver injury.
Dr. Sangameswaran B, the lead author of the final report wrote, "The present investigation established pharmacological evidence to support the folklore claim that it is used traditionally as a hepatoprotective agent".
Additional investigation of the liver protective effect of Andrographolide (AN), a major bioactive compound isolated from herbal Andrographis, researchers at the Dr. Hari Singh Gour Central University, formulate AN herbosomes (ANH) through complexation with naturally occurring soya-phosphatidylcholine (SPC) for enhancing absorption with carbon tetrachloride inducing hepatotoxicity rat model and compared.
The ANH showed a significant liver protective effect compared to the standard drug (Silymarin).
Application of ANH in an animal model has better bioavailability than those of AN observed by the statistics in vitro absorption and hence improved hepatoprotection as compared to plain AN at an equivalent dose.
Taken together, herbal Andrographis and its bioactive ingredient Andrographolide (AN)may be considered an adjunct therapy in aiding conventional medicine in providing extra protection of the liver and treatment of liver damage and diseases.

#Herbal #Butchersbroom Prevents Timeconsuming, Painful, and Expensive Complications of Varicose Veins and Hemorrhoids, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Butcher's broom may be considered a functional herb for the cure of hemorrhoids without inducing side effects, some scientists found.
Hemorrhoids are a condition of swollen veins in the anal canal that cause pain.
In some cases, inner hemorrhoids can cause a large volume of blood loss to a patient, leading to a life-threatening condition.
According to the statistic, approximately, 75% of all Americans will develop hemorrhoids at some point in their lives.
In the study to examine whether constipation, a low-fiber diet, a sedentary lifestyle, and gravidity are commonly assumed to increase the risk of hemorrhoids, researchers launched a joint study led by the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.
The cross-sectional study includes participants who underwent a colonoscopy in a colorectal adenoma prevention trial and who had a detailed assessment of bowel habits, diet, and activity. The presence of hemorrhoids was extracted from the subjects’ colonoscopy reports.
The study included 2,813 participants. Of these, 1,074 had hemorrhoids recorded.
At the end of the study, researchers wrote, "Constipation is associated with an increased risk of hemorrhoids. Gravidity and physical activity do not appear to be associated. High grain fiber intake and sedentary behavior are associated with a decreased risk of hemorrhoids".
These results firmly indicated that the most common risk factor of hemorrhoids is constipation found in a high percentage of people who follow the Western diet.
In other words, by maintaining the healthy levels of daily fiber intake, the risk of hemorrhoids can be reduced substantially.
Butcher's broom is a low evergreen shrub, a species of Ruscus aculeatus, belonging to the family Asparagaceae, native to Eurasia.
The plant has been used in herbal medicine to treat reduce inflammation, Peripheral vascular disease, Hemorrhoids Bronchial asthma, Varicose veins, Hypotension, Jaundice, functional disorders of the heart, kidney disorder, venotonic and anti-oedematous properties, etc.
The chemical ingredients of Herbal Butcher's broom includes rutin, sitosterol, sparteine, spirostanol saponins, steroidal sapogenins, sterols, stigmasterol, sulfated steroidal saponins, sweet broom, tetracosanoic acid, triterpenes, triterpenes, tyramine, etc.
In finding the natural ingredient or whole food that processes the anti-hemorrhoid effect without inducing the painful side effect in those of conventional surgery, researchers at Thorne Research launched an investigation of all possible treatments.
Botanical plant with reduced cost used in the traditional treatment of hemorrhoids and varicose veins may be another alternative.
Oral dietary supplementation from these plants inhibited the loss of vascular integrity associated with the pathogenesis of both hemorrhoids and varicose veins by improving microcirculation, capillary flow, and vascular tone, and to strengthen the connective tissue of the perivascular amorphous substrates.
Out of several herbal plants selected for the study, oral supplementation with herbal Butcher's broom used alone or combined with others herbs such as Aesculus hippocastanum, Centella asiatica, Hamamelis virginiana, and bioflavonoids shown to prevent time-consuming, painful, and expensive complications of varicose veins and hemorrhoids.
These results suggested, compared to conservative therapies including diet, lifestyle changes, and hydrotherapy which require a high degree of patient compliance to be effective, more patients who concern with the cost and side effects of surgery may opt for the use ofButcher'ss Broom oral supplement in the treatment of hemorrhoids with no side effects.

#Herbal #Alfalfa Exerts a Significant Effect in Alleviating and Preventing #MenopausalSymptoms, Researchers Show
Kyle J. Norton
Herbal Alfalfa may be considered a functional herb for the treatment of menopause, some scientists suggested.
Menopause cessation of the menstrual period and is a natural process for all women. Some researchers suggested that you officially enter the stage of menopause if you have gone 12 months without a menstrual period.
Women enter the menopause stage differently, but the average age is 51 in the United States.
Women with ovarian failure or removed may experience symptoms of menopause at the early age of 38.
Women who experienced symptoms of menopause are the result of the gradually reduced production of estrogen and progesterone, the 2 most abundant hormones in childbearing-age women.
Most women in the Western world experience symptoms of hot flashes and emotional symptoms of menopause may disrupt your sleep, lower your energy or affect emotional health.
In the classification of the different menopause symptoms experienced by women in the West and East. Dr. Baber RJ launched a study to examine menopause in Asia and The West suggested "There is a school of thought that believes that menopausal symptoms are a peculiarly 'Western' phenomenon, not experienced by women from other regions and particularly not from Asia where it has been claimed, dietary, social and cultural factors afforded protection for women living in that region".
and "Ethnic differences within Asia account for small differences in endogenous hormone levels and age at menopause between Asian and Western women, and the type of menopause symptoms and their prevalence also differ between those two communities".
These results strongly indicated diet plays a critical role in the development of menopause symptoms severity. Asian women who immigrated to the West and adapted to the Western-style diet experience menopause symptoms similar to those in the West.
Alfalfa is a flowering plant in the genus Medicago, belonging to the family Fabaceae, It has been cultivated all over the world as hay for cattle feeding.
The leaves, sprouts, and seeds make medicine that has been used in traditional medicine over thousands of years to treat high cholesterol, asthma, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, enhance digestive system, bleeding disorders, kidney, urinary tract infections, etc. North American Aboriginals has used Alfalfa seed as food, such as making bread and mush.
The herbal chemical constituents include flavones, isoflavones, sterols, bichanin A, coumestrol daidzein, formonetin, genistein and coumarin derivatives, etc.
In the finding, the natural whole food for the alleviation of menopause symptoms without inducing adverse effects caused by the hormone therapy researchers at the Università degli Studi-Siena conducted an experiment to test the efficacy of a plant product based on extracts of the leaves of Salvia officinalis (sage) and Medicago sativa (alfalfa) in the treatment of hot flushes.
The study includes 30 menopausal women with symptoms of hot flashes.
Application of the combined leaves of Salvia officinalis (sage) and Medicago sativa (alfalfa) extract inhibited hot flushes and night sweating completely in 20 women with four women showing good improvement and the other six showed a reduction in symptoms.
Compared to the levels of TSH and Prl responses before and after 3 months of therapy, the plant's product induced a significant increase in prolactin (Prl and) TSH response to thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH).
TRH.produced in great amounts during menopause due to reduced TSH and prolactin responses to TRH during menopause.
Dr. De Leo V, the lead author after taking in the final assessment said, "The product seems to have a central slight antidopaminergic action without side effects and is an effective agent in the treatment of menopausal symptoms".
Antidopaminergic drugs have been used in conventional medicine for the treatment of menopause symptoms, including Veralipride.
Dr. Kurzer MS and colleagues in the differentiation of plant-based estrogen, including those that have been defined in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains commonly consumed by humans. Soybeans, clover, alfalfa sprouts, and oilseeds (such as flaxseed) suggest that dietary sources of isoflavones, coumestans, and lignans have been found to exert a significant effect in alleviating and preventing menopausal symptoms in humans, animals, and cell culture systems.
In the final report, the doctors said, "Although there currently are no dietary recommendations for individual phytoestrogens, there may be a great benefit in increased consumption of plant foods".
These results suggested that including alfalfa sprouts in a menopausal women's diet may have a strong implication in reducing the frequency and period of menopause symptoms.
Taken together, there is no doubt that Alfalfa processed with a high amount of plant-based estrogen may be considered a functional food in the prevention and treatment of menopause symptoms.

#Herbal #ArnicaExtract Suppresses the Initiation and Progression of ColonCancer in Vivos, Scientists Say
Kyle J. Norton
Herb Arnica may be the next target for pharmaceutical companies to identify a single-ingredient medicine for the treatment of colon cancer, some scientists suggested.
Colon cancer is a slow and predictable condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the colon tissue.
The cause of colon cancer is a result of the alternation of DNA of the cells in the colon.
Most cases of colon cancer start at the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon tissue. At this stage, the tumor is very small and does not cause any symptoms.
However, at the later stage, colon cancer may cause symptoms of a change of bowel habits, severe rectal bleeding or blood in your stool, and persistent abdominal pain.
If you experience some of the above symptoms that last more than 4 weeks, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of colon cancer.
According to the statistic, the 5-year survival rate of people with localized stage colorectal cancer is 90% and only 39% of patients are diagnosed at this early stage.
Researchers do not know why people with the same health condition, family history, and diet pattern, are susceptible to colon cell DNA alternation while others do not.
Out of a number of risk factors, the genetic preposition has been under intensifying studies by many scientists.
Dr.Glaser EM in a finding the genetic mutation associated with the risk of colon cancer said, "Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignancies in the United States. Although both genetic and environmental factors play a role in colorectal tumorigenesis" and "single genes that confer susceptibility to familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC). Because these genes are inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion, offspring of carriers have a 50% chance of inheriting the gene mutation and its associated risk".
The genetic mutation hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC).genes has a prevalence rate of 1 in 500 and causes about 2% to 3% of all colorectal cancers.
More importantly, genetic testing for the FAP and HNPCC genes is now available for everyone.
Arnica is a herbaceous species, genus perennial, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia.
The plant has been used in herbal medicine for centuries to treat strains, sprains, and bruises.
Colon Cancer is defined as a condition of the abnormal proliferation of cells in the colon.
In the concerns of the aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and colon-rectal mucosal epithelial cell proliferation in patients with colon cancer, researchers at the University of São Paulo examine the anti-colon cancer of chemical compound isolated from the Lychnophora ericoides Mart. (Brazilian herbal arnica).
50 included in the study were randomly assigned to the following Fifty male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 5 groups.
* The groups G1 to G4 were given 4 injections of the carcinogen 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH).
* The G2 group received Lychnophora ericoides (LE) extracts for 6 wks.
* The groups G3 and G4 received LE for 4 wk and 2 wk, respectively, at the postinitiation and initiation phases of colonic carcinogenesis.
* group G5 was the control.
42 days after the first injections of DMH for the neoplastic induction, researchers found that
* Groups G1 demonstrated an increase in the number of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and cancer cell proliferation induced by DMH.
* Group G4 after treatment of LE inhibited a clinically significant decrease in the number of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and attenuated the increase of cancer cell proliferation induced by DMH.
These results suggested that Lychnophora ericoides extracts were effective against the development of colon cancer by suppressing the initiation and progression of colonic carcinogenesis.
Continuously, to differentiate the effect of herbal Arnica effects in the inhibition of cancers, researchers examine the cytotoxicity of 21 flavonoids and 5 sesquiterpene lactones, isolated from herbal Arnica in a human small cell lung carcinoma cell line, and in COLO 320, a human colorectal cancer cell line.
Compared to cisplatin, a novel chemo drug, most flavonoids showed moderate to low cytotoxicity against COLO 320 cancer cell line.
However, flavone jaceosidin of the sesquiterpene lactones was found to be the most effective compound.in displaying the cytotoxicity.
Application of the maximum half-life concentration of 1.0 microM exerted the most cytotoxic effect against COLO 320.
Compared to GLC4, COLO 320 was more sensitive than for many flavonoids (especially for flavones).
The finding strongly indicated that herbal Arnica bioactive compounds process potential activity in inhibiting the onset and progression of colon cancer.
Therefore, herbal Arnica containing abundant bioactive compounds may have a potential in reducing risk and treatment of colon cancer, depending on the confirmation of the large sample size and multicenter in the human study.

Daily intake of a portion of celery may have a potential effect in reducing the risk and treatment of colon cancer, some scientists found.
The colon is also known as the large intestine.
Colon cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progress cancer and in a predictable way and is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in developed countries, including the US and Canada.
Colon cancer is a chronic and medical condition characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in the colon tissue.
Most cases of colon cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon. The stage of colon cancer is depended on how far the alternated cells have spread in the colon.
Patients with the early stage of colon cancer, may not experience any symptoms. But as the tumor spread and expanse, it may suppress the nearby tissue and nerve, causing symptoms of locally severe pain and discomforts.
Although there are many risk factors associated with the early onset of colon cancer, a poor diet high in saturated fat and trans fat, red meat and processed foods have been found to play a major role in the development and recurrence of colon cancer in the Western world.
Dr. Yun Zhu, the lead author in the study "Western Diet and Recurrence of Colon Cancer"Disease-free survival (DFS) among CRC patients was significantly worsened among patients with a highly processed meat dietary pattern (the highest vs the lowest quartile HR 1.82" and " The association between the processed meat pattern and DFS was restricted to patients diagnosed with colon cancer (the highest vs the lowest quartile: HR 2.29".
These results suggested that the Western diet not is associated with the development of colon cancer but also associated with a higher risk of tumor recurrence, metastasis, and death among patients with colon cancer.
Celery is a species of Apium graveolens, belonging to the family Apiaceae. It is cultivated all around the globe as a vegetable.
Celery can grow to 1/2 m tall with stalks (leaf on the top) arranging in a conical shape joined at a common base.
In the finding, the natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer without inducing side effects, researchers at Hallym Univ investigate the major compound Luteolin, a 3',4',5,7-tetrahydroxyflavone isolated from celery in a tested cancer cell line.
Luteolin exerted a strong activity in mediated regulation of cell cycle progression and apoptosis in the HT-29 human colon cancer cell line.
Injection of luteolin decreased DNA synthesis and viable HT-29 cell numbers in a concentration-dependent manner.
Further analysis suggested that luteolin demonstrated cells cycle arrest at the G1 phase by inhibiting cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK)4 and CDK2 activity in the promotion of cell cycle division and a decrease of phosphorylation of retinoblastoma protein which increases the function of retinoblastoma protein in tumor suppression.
These results are observed by the activities of CDK4 and CDK2 decreased within 2 h after luteolin treatment, with a 38% decrease in CDK2 activity (P < 0.05) observed in cells treated with 40 micromol/l luteolin.
Luteolin also promoted G2/M arrest at 24 h posttreatment by downregulating cyclin B1 expression, in the promotion of cancer cell proliferation and survival.
Luteolin also exhibited an apoptotic effect by increasing the function of proteins which are responsible for programming cells death.
Moreover, the chemical compound decreased expression of these key antiapoptotic proteins which could contribute to the increase in p53, a tumor suppressor-independent apoptosis observed in HT-29 cells.
Dr. Lim DY in the final report wrote, "luteolin promotes both cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in the HT-29 colon cancer cell line, providing insight about the mechanisms underlying its antitumorigenic activities".
Additionally, the study conducted by the Harbin Medical College to assess the role of diet in the etiology of colorectal cancer included a total of 336 incident cases of histologically confirmed colorectal cancer (111 colon cancer and 225 rectal cancer) and an equal number of controls with other non-neoplastic diseases were interviewed in hospital wards.
After examining the average frequency of consumption and amount consumed of single food items obtained by a dietary history questionnaire researchers showed that vegetables, such as celery, have a strong protective effect against colorectal cancer compared to alcohol intake which was found to be an important risk factor for developing colon cancer.
More interestingly, perillyl alcohol, found in celery seeds, and several other plants, was found to be active to induce apoptosis in colon tumor cells without affecting normal cells and revert colon tumor cells back to a differentiated state.
Application of perillyl alcohol in animal models also increased the proteins which have the function in programming cell death and induced phase I and phase II detoxification systems.
Taken together, celery-processed anti-colon cancer bioactive chemical compounds luteolin and perillyl alcohol may be considered a functional food for the prevention and a secondary therapy combined with primary medicine for the treatment of colon cancer.

#DietaryStrawberries Reduce the Risks Associated with Obesity and Diabetes in Obese Individuals, Researchers Show
Kyle J. Norton
The rise of obesity associated with the increase in the incidence of Type 2 diabetes has been a significant burden on healthcare systems in many countries.
Strawberry-processed abundant phytochemicals may be the next target for pharmaceutical companies to extract a single ingredient for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, some scientists suggested.
Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose as the result of either cell in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.
Researchers do not why people with similar health conditions, diet, and family history are susceptible to the development of insulin resistance, the early stage of diabetes while others do.
Some researchers suggested that genetic proposition and unhealthy lifestyle accompanied by physical activity are the most common risk factors associated with the onset of type 2 diabetes.
Dr. Karla C. Paz-Salinas, the lead author in the study "Do People with Type 2 Diabetes Think They are Unhealthy?" wrote, "A healthy lifestyle and understanding of diabetes management are important factors for delaying the onset of comorbidities associated with Type 2 diabetes".
On the genetic preposition front, researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin, said, "Very few T2D risk genes were identified using candidate gene and linkage-based studies, but the advent of genome-wide association studies has led to the identification of multiple genes, including several that were not previously known to play any role in T2D. Highly genes, for example, TCF7L2, KCNQ1, and KCNJ11 are discussed in greater detail".
We can not prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes caused by a genetic mutation, however, the risk of type 2 diabetes can be reduced substantially and type 2 diabetes can be easily managed if we are following a healthy lifestyle that processes a diet high in fruits and vegetable, less in saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed food with moderate exercise.
Strawberry is a genius of Fragaria × ananassa and belongs to the family Rosaceae. They have been grown all over the world with a suitable climate for commercial profits and for health benefits.
The major chemical compounds of strawberries include anthocyanin and ellagitannins and p-Hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, ellagic acid, cyanidin-3-glucoside, pelargonidin-3-glucoside, kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin.
In the finding of a natural ingredient for the treatment of diabetes with no side effects, researchers at the University of California launched a study to examine the anti-inflammatory and blood glucose (BG)-regulating the capacity of strawberries in a mouse model of diet-induced obesity.
A total of thirty-six male C57BL/6J mice were included in the study randomly divided into four groups (nine mice per group), including mice fed a low-fat diet (LF, 13 % fat), the LF supplemented with 2·6 % freeze-dried strawberry powder (LFSB), a high-fat diet (HF, 44 % fat) or the HF supplemented with 2·6 % strawberry powder (HFSB).
The dietary intake of SB approximated one human serving of strawberries
Before administration of strawberry powder, a blood sample of the HF group showed an increased non-fasted BG, insulin, soluble intracellular adhesion molecule-1, the important biomarkers for inflammatory processes involving activation or damage to cells, E-selectin, leptin, resistin, and plasminogen activator protein-1, the indication of the inflammatory process.
High dietary fat decreased IL-4 production, an anti-inflammatory cytokine from activated splenocytes, the white blood cells.
The levels of BG concentrations were lower in the mice supplemented with SB (10·64 mmol/l) compared to the non-supplemented mice.
BG values were approximately 6·5 % lower in the supplemented mice.
These results firmly supported a promising role for dietary strawberries in reducing the risks associated with obesity and diabetes and regulating the levels of inflammatory markers in non-obese individuals.
The study was published in the US National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health. You can view the abstract by clicking the link in the resources box.
Please note that strawberry contains a measured amount of oxalates, if you have kidney disease, please check with your doctor before applying.

#Healthyfood #Banana Exchibits Anti Hypertension Activity in Vivos , According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found an inexpensive whole fruit for the prevention and treatment of hypertension with no side effects, some studies found.
Banana is the common name of a genus of tropical herbaceous plants. It can grow from 3 to 9 m and belongs to the family of the lily and the orchid.
Hypertension is a medical condition characterized by abnormally high blood pressure. one of the preventable risk factors of heart disease associated with the cluster of metabolic syndrome.
In other words, high blood pressure means raising the pressure in your heart. the condition can be acute or chronic.
Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.
Chronic high blood pressure epidemiologically can damage the arteries and causes blood clots to form in the arteries, blocking the blood flow and contributing to the onset of cardiovascular and neuro diseases.
Although certain chronic conditions such as kidney disease are found to associate with chronic hypertension which can only be treated by addressing the causable condition, the syndrome in the Western world is mostly a result of unhealthy diet and obesity.
According to a joint study led by the Tecnológico de Monterrey, that examined the effects of
Western and Modern Mexican dietary patterns and the incident hypertension in Mexican women, the comparison of participants who followed the diet loaded heavily with vegetables, fruits, and legumes and who follow the Western and Modern Mexican dietary patterns loaded heavily with processed meats, fast foods, and red meat; and finally the third component was loaded heavily with corn tortillas, hot peppers, and sodas suggested that
* The multivariable-adjusted odds of hypertension in the highest quartile of the W pattern were 24% higher than the odds for individuals in the lowest quartile.
* Women in the highest quartile of the MM pattern had 15% higher odds than women in the lowest quartile.
* And The Fruits & Vegetables (FV) pattern was not significantly associated with hypertension.
These results strongly indicated high blood pressure can be prevented by following a healthy diet with high fruits and vegetables, whole grains,s and low saturated and trans fat, red meat, and processed foods.
In finding a natural chemical compound or whole food for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, researchers evaluate the corosolic acid (CRA) antihypertensive activity, a constituent of banana leaves.
The experiment included Six-week-old male SHR-cp rats, an animal model of metabolic syndrome that were fed a high-fat diet containing 0.072% CRA for 14 weeks.
Treatment with CRA lowered blood pressure, which was elevated in control animals, by 10% after 8 weeks, and serum-free fatty acids by 21% after 2 weeks.
Oxidative stress markers thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine in the tested animal were also decreased by 27% and 59%, respectively, after 2 weeks.
Furthermore, CRA treatment also reduced the levels of myeloperoxidase markers, 3-nitrotyrosine, and 3-chlorotyrosine, by 38% and 39%, respectively, after 10 weeks, and decreased the levels of high sensitivity C-reactive protein, markers of inflammation, after 6 weeks.
The presence of a marker of inflammation is an indication of inflammation.
These results clearly suggested that CRA ameliorates hypertension, and oxidative stress caused by the inflammation in SHR-cp rats.
Dr. Yamaguchi Y, the lead scientist said, "CRA can be beneficial for preventing atherosclerosis-related diseases that are an increasing health care problem worldwide".
Moreover, In a human study to test the effect of banana on cold stress-induced hypertension, peak expiratory flow rate and plasma ACE activity, researchers showed that
*Banana treatment reduced the systolic blood pressure (P < 0.005), diastolic blood pressure (P < 0.025) and mean arterial blood pressure (P < 0.005) during cold stress in healthy volunteers compared to controls.
* There were no significant changes in heart rate and peak expiratory flow rate but only a significant decrease in plasma angiotensin-converting enzyme activity after banana treatment.
Levels of plasma angiotensin-converting enzyme are high in patients with hypertension.
Taken altogether, bananas may be considered a functional fruit for the prevention and treatment of hypertension with no side effects.
