A total of 24 male Sprague Dawley rats aged 5 weeks are included in the study.
Rats were divided into 4 groups: (G1) untreated group not induced with AOM, (G2) untreated group induced with AOM, (G3) treated group induced with AOM, and (G4) treated group not induced with AOM.
Injection of AOM (15 mg/kg) was via intraperitoneal route once a week for two subsequent weeks to induce colorectal cancer.
The treatment groups were given oral administration of KH (1183 mg/kg body weight) twice daily for 8 weeks.

AOM injected group showed a significant increase in the total number of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) and aberrant crypts (AC) and crypt multiplicity and damage of liver and kidney

After treatment of KH, the AOM group displayed a reduction of crypts and chemotoxicity by restoring the liver and kidney function observed by the blood profile.

Furthermore, KH was not toxically identified by the KH-treated group not induced with AOM.

These results suggested that KH may have a potential effect on inhibiting the toxicity caused by chemotherapy and improving the chemo drugs' activity without inducing any side effects.

Moreover, on finding a natural whole food to overcome 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) therapeutic resistance and adverse toxicity in colorectal cancer, researchers looked into Manuka honey (MH), a rich source of bioactive compounds to examine its anticancer effects on human colon cancer HCT-116 and LoVo cells.

Compared to 5-FU alone, MH synergistically enhanced the chemotherapeutic effects of 5-FU, by reducing cell proliferation through the suppression of enzymes and proteins associated with the function of stimulating cancer cell multicity and activation of pathways associated with cell death programming.

Combined with chemo drug 5-FU, MH promoted the expression of antibody production and production of ROS in the induction of cytotoxicity activity against cancer cells without causing harm to the nearby cells and tissue.

This result was observed by the reducing antioxidants produced by the cancer cells and increasing oxidative stress in the tumor.

Additionally, MH also induced cancer cell apoptosis through cell cycle arrest.

The findings clearly indicated MH could be a useful preventive or adjuvant agent in the treatment of colorectal cancer with 5-FU by inhibiting toxicity and cancer cell resistance.

Taken altogether, KH and MH can be considered functional foods for the prevention and adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of cancer without inducing chemotoxicity.

#Phytochemical Indole-3-carbinol Combined with the Anticancer Agent, Gemcitabine For the Treatment of #PancreaticCancer, Researchers Reveal

Scientists may have found a bioactive compound for the prevention and treatment of pancreatic cancer, according to studies.
Cancer of the pancreas or pancreatic cancer is a condition of a malignant neoplasm of the pancreas.

Most cases of primary pancreatic cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the pancreas as a result of irregular cell growth caused by the alternation of DNA.

Pancreatic cancers start in the ducts (an exocrine component of the pancreas) carried pancreatic juices with cancer of an epithelium that originates in glandular tissue and accounts for over 75 - 90% of all cases of exocrine cancers.

According to the statistic, pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in both men and women in the US. Cancer has the poorest prognosis compared to other major types of cancer, with a 5-yr survival rate of approximately 5%.

More precisely, in the US, the age-adjusted incidence of pancreatic cancer is higher in men compared to women regardless of ethnicity.

Where miR-21 simultaneously regulates multiple programs that enhance cell proliferation, apoptosis, and tumor invasiveness by targeting the genes associated with cancer proliferation.

In human pancreatic cancer cells (Panc-1), injection of 13C inhibited the expression of miR-21 positively correlated in a time- and dose-dependent manner.

13C and gemcitabine combination therapy increased cytotoxicity in Panc-1 cells.

The efficacy of 13C was attributed to its activity in promoting cancer cell apoptosis by attenuating miR-21 transfection.


The finding suggested that I3C would be effective in enhancing the sensitivity of pancreatic cancer cells to gemcitabine via the inhibition of the overexpression of miR-21.

An additional experiment demonstrating the ability of a dietary agent, indole-3-carbinol (I3C), to lower the LD(50) of gemcitabine (Gemzar) in decreasing growth of both male (MiaPaca2) and female (SU86.86) pancreatic cancer cells, researchers found that* Without an injection of 13C, female pancreatic cancer cells were more resistant to gemcitabine.

* In male MiaPaca2 cells application of 1, 10, or 100 μM of I3C induced apoptosis by reactivating the tumor suppressor gene in pancreatic cancer cells.

* 13C also protects the healthy pancreas cells by enhancing the activity of the tumor suppressor gene.

Moreover, by examing the DNA methylation researchers suggested suppressor tumor gene (p16INK4a) inactivation in the promotion of hypermethylation is considered an early event in pancreatic carcinogenesis.

DNA methylation is a process by which methyl groups are added to the DNA molecule.

These results clearly indicated, I3C, a possible non-toxic hypomethylating agent, combined with the anticancer agent, gemcitabine, is a powerful strategy for treating pancreatic cancer.


Taken altogether, the bioactive compound indole-3-carbinol (I3C) may be used for the prevention and treatment of pancreas cancer, pending the results of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Some researchers suggested that people who are living under prolonged periods of stress due to chronic illness or stress are associated with a higher risk of high blood sugar.

Others suggested that an unhealthy diet such as high in saturated and trans fat, red meat, and processed food, and lack of physical exercise have many folds increased the risk for the onset of hyperglycemia.

In fact, shift workers accompanied by an unhealthy lifestyle are the joint associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes.

"For the joint association of per five-year increment rotating night shift work and per unhealthy lifestyle factor with type 2 diabetes, the hazard ratio was 2.83 (2.15 to 3.73) with a significant additive interaction (P for interaction <0.001)".


How severe is the diabetes risk in nurses in the rotating shift accompanied by an unhealthy diet? According to the team, during 22-24 years of follow-up, 10 915 cases of incident type 2 diabetes occurred.

The risk of type 2 diabetes is even higher if each individual factor is also included.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient and whole food for the treatment of diabetes and diabetes complications, researchers examine the action of ginger in the diabetic population.

Selected mice fed by either a high-fat diet or a standard diet for a period of 17 weeks were given phloretin isolated from apples and [6]-gingerol isolated from ginger supplemented at two different doses.

Application of phloretin and [6]-gingerol inhibited the formation of AGEs by suppressing the receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE).

Where Advanced glycation end products are proteins or lipids that become glycated as a result of exposure to sugars. The products can substantially worsen certain chronic diseases such as diabetes.


Phloretin or [6]-gingerol supplementation significantly reduced plasma glucose, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, AGEs, and insulin levels and enhanced GSH/GSSG ratio.

These results suggested that phloretin or [6]-gingerol supplementation not only inhibited the oxidative stress that causes abnormally high blood glucose but also improved insulin resistance against the onset of diabetes complications in mice fed with a high-fat diet.

Futhermore, the assessment of the effect of ginger consumption on glycemic status, lipid profile, and some inflammatory markers in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with the consumption of 1600 mg ginger versus 1600 mg wheat flour placebo daily for 12 weeks, also found that ginger reduced fasting plasma glucose, HbA1C, insulin, HOMA, triglyceride, total cholesterol, CRP and PGE₂ significantly compared with the placebo group (p < 0.05).

Ginger improved fasting glucose and parameters associated with the onset of insulin resistance without inducing any side effects.

Dr. Arablou T after taking into account co and confounders said, "Ginger improved insulin sensitivity and some fractions of lipid profile, and reduced CRP and PGE₂ in type 2 diabetic patients. Therefore ginger can be considered an effective treatment for the prevention of diabetes complications".

Taken altogether, ginger may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of diabetes and diabetes complications induced by abnormally high blood glucose.

3,3'-#Diindolylmethane Exerts Cytotoxic Against #LiverCancer Cells, Researchers Say




Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient for the treatment of liver cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

The liver is the largest internal organs in the human body which plays a critical role for maintaining the integrity of cells wall, production of vitamin D and steroid hormone and aiding the digestive system in absorption of nutrients, through the production of cholesterol.

Additionally, the liver also filters out waste from the blood coming from the digestive system before passing them to the other parts of the body.

Liver cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the liver.

Most cases of liver cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the liver tissues before penetrating into deeper layers of the liver.

At the early stage due to the small size of the tumor and lack of nerve tissues, most patients are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, cancer cells can travel a distance away from the liver to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

Patients at this stage may experience the general symptoms of cancers such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite and fatigue accompanied by the symptoms of persistent upper abdominal pain, abdominal swelling, jaundice, and chalky stools.

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of liver cancer, some researchers suggested that people who carry hepatitis viral may have a substantially higher risk of the disease.

Dr. Marc Ringehan, the lead researcher said, "Hepatitis B and C viruses are a global health problem causing acute and chronic infections that can lead to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). These infections are the leading cause of HCC worldwide and are associated with significant mortality, accounting for more than 1.3 million deaths per year".

And, "The majority of viral-associated HCC cases develop in subjects with liver cirrhosis; however, hepatitis B virus infection can promote HCC development without prior end-stage liver disease".


Scientists in seeking potential and bioactive compounds for the treatment of liver cancer examined 3'3-Diindolylmethane (DIM, the major product of the acid-catalyzed oligomerization of indole-3-carbinol anti-liver cancer properties.

In two HCC cell lines SMMC-7721 and MHCC-97H, injection of DIM inhibited the proliferation, migration, and invasion of cancer cells.


In nude mice, DIM significantly decreased the volumes of SMMC-7721 orthotopic liver tumors and suppressed lung metastasis.

Furthermore, DIM decreased the level of phospho-FAK (Tyr397) which is found elevated in both vitro and in vivo.


The DIM anti-cancer cells efficacy on proliferation, migration, and invasion is probably due to the inhibition of the expression of matrixes (MMP2-9) associated with the promotion of cancer cell growth and invasion.

Dr. Li WX, the lead scientist wrote, "These results demonstrated that DIM blocks HCC cell metastasis by suppressing tumor cell migration and invasion".

Moreover, in order to reveal more information about DIM anti-liver cancer activity, researchers investigated whether diindolylmethane effect HA59T cells.

At concentrations of 10-75 μM, diindolylmethane killed cells in a concentration-dependent manner, particularly, in diindolylmethane (25-50 μM) induced apoptosis in a concentration-dependent manner.
The cytotoxic effect of diindolylmethane against the tested liver cancer cell line was not reversed by chelating cytosolic Ca(2+).

Where Calcium (Ca2+) ions are important for cellular signaling. Its flow plays an essential role in regulating several secondary messenger systems in neural adaptation for the visual, auditory, and olfactory systems.

The results suggested that DIM inhibited the onset and progression of liver cancer through a number of mechanisms, including proteins involved in anti-cell proliferation and migration, and promotion of apoptosis.

Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of 3,3'-diindolylmethane in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Scientists may have found a natural ingredient for the treatment of metabolic syndrome with no side effects, according to studies.

A metabolic syndrome is a group of syndromes or diseases associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and types 2 diabetes, including high blood pressure, sugar, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and excess body fat around the waist.

If you have 3 of the above syndrome you are considered to have metabolic syndrome.

According to statistics, metabolic syndrome is a growing prevalence of chronic conditions, accounting for 17% of all health care costs and directly contributing to 43% of all deaths in Canada.

In other words, 1 in 5 people in Canada has metabolic syndrome, affecting 19.1% of all Canadian adults.

There are certain risk factors associated with the onset of metabolic syndrome besides the five mentioned above including age, family history of metabolic syndrome, physical activity, and women diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Untreated metabolic syndrome epidemiologically may induce complications of chronic illness such as atherosclerosis, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and kidney disease.

Some researchers suggested that metabolic syndrome and widespread obesity in the US may be correlated as they share a hallmark of insulin resistance.

Dr. Keller KB in the differentiation of the metabolic syndrome in obese wrote, "Westernization of diets has been part of the problem. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are being replaced by readily accessible foods high in saturated fat, sugar, and refined carbohydrates".

And, "The metabolic syndrome associated with abdominal obesity, which includes insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and elevated CRP levels, identifies subjects who have an increase in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Twenty to 25% of the adult population in the United States have the metabolic syndrome, and in some older groups this prevalence approaches 50%".

The results strongly suggested that both metabolic syndrome and obesity in the US population are attributed to the Western diet pattern.

In other words, by changing to a healthy diet such as a traditional diet, the risk of obesity and metabolic syndrome can be decreased substantially.

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Scientists on finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of metabolic syndrome examined the long-term supplementation with dietary luteolin (LU)-enriched artichoke leaf (AR) in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity and its complications in C57BL/6N mice.

Selected mice were fed a normal diet, an HFD, or an HFD plus AR or LU for 16 weeks.

In the HFD-fed mice, the application of AR decreased adiposity and dyslipidemia by decreasing lipogenesis.

Moreover, AR +LU prevented insulin sensitivity by decreasing the level of plasma gastric inhibitory polypeptide and activity of hepatic glucogenic enzymes and the proteins associated with liver inflammation,

Additional analysis of the effect of AR and LU suggested, although the anti-metabolic syndrome effects of AR and LU were similar, the anti-adiposity and anti-dyslipidemic effects of AR were more pronounced.

The findings strongly support the use of artichokes for the treatment of metabolic syndrome.

In order to know more information about artichoke anti-metabolic syndrome activity, researchers evaluated the protective effect of the ethanol leaves extract of C. scolymus in alloxan-induced stress oxidant, hepatic-kidney dysfunction and histological changes in liver, kidney, and pancreas of different experimental groups of rats.

A total of 40 male Wistar rats included in the study were induced to diabetes with a single dose intraperitoneal injection (i.p.) of alloxan (150 mg/kg body weight (b.w.)), then the diabetic rats were orally and daily administrated ethanol extract from C. scolymus at two doses (200-400 mg/kg, b.w) or (12 mg/kg, b.w) with anti-diabetic reference drug, Acarbose for one month.

In vivo, injection of the ethanol extracts from the leaves of C. scolymus (200-400 mg/kg) decreased significantly, the α-amylase levels in the serum of diabetic rats associated with a significant reduction in blood glucose rate of 42,84% and 37,91% after 28 days of treatment.

The extracts also induced a significant lowering of plasma total cholesterol (T-Ch) by 18,11% and triglyceride (TG) by 60,47%, and low-density lipoproteins (LDL-C) by 37,77%, compared to diabetic rats.

Oxidative stress markers in the liver, kidney, and pancreas also were reduced by the injection of the extracts.

The findings suggested the anti-metabolic syndrome of artichoke was attributed to its anti-hyperglycemic properties, at least partly mediated by antioxidant and hypolipidemic effects

Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.
