Compared to an ideal weight, that reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, body weight greater than 20 percent is considered obese.
Obesity is a medical condition caused by excess body fat accumulated over time, while overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height.
According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight, while a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.
Epidemiological studies in the investigation of the complication of obesity found that cardiovascular problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, accelerated atherosclerosis, stroke... and chronic lower back pain are the most common disease complications associated with obesity.
According to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2013–2014, more than 1 in 3 and 13 adults in the US were considered to have obesity and extreme obesity, respectively.
Although there are many risk factors involved in the onset of the disease, some researchers suggested an unhealthy lifestyle is one of the major causes of obesity in the Western world.
Dr. Robert F. Kushner, in the examination of the unhealthy lifestyle risk of obesity of the 53‐item lifestyle pattern questionnaire posted on a commercial weight loss program Web site collected from 2004 through 2008, wrote, "Unhealthy lifestyle patterns in diet, exercise, and coping were highly prevalent among this population".
The results findings clearly suggested a strong correlation between diet, exercise, and obesity.
Honey, the rich golden liquid is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The liquid is considered one of the healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.
In the urgency to find a natural remedy for the treatment of widespread obesity in the Western world, researchers evaluated the potential of honey consumption in controlling obesity.
The study compared the two local Malaysian honey types: Gelam and Acacia honey's activities in reducing excess weight gain and other parameters related to obesity.
Male Sprague-Dawley rats selected for the study were induced obese by a high-fat diet (HFD) prior to introduction with/without honey or orlistat for four weeks.
Rats fed with Gelam honey showed significant reductions in excess weight gain and adiposity index compared to HFD rats.
Furthermore, parameters related to obesity such as levels of plasma glucose, triglycerides, and cholesterol, plasma leptin and resistin, liver enzymes, renal function, and relative organ weight in Gelam and Acacia honey-treated groups were reduced significantly, compared to obese rats.
Compared to the treatment of orlistat, Gelam, and Acacia honey showed similar results without inducing hepatotoxicity effects.
Hepatotoxicity is a known side effect of orlistat.
Where Orlistat is a drug used for the treatment of obesity, sold over-the-counter as Alli by GlaxoSmithKline in the United Kingdom and the United States.
Dr. Samat S, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "Consumption of honey can be used to control obesity by regulating lipid metabolism and appears to be more effective than orlistat".
Taken altogether, hiney, particularly Gelam and Acacia honey may be considered anti-obesity functional remedies with no side effects, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

The Effects of #Curcumin Found in #Turmeric on #HeartDisease, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a kitchen bioactive compound that processes cardio-protective properties, according to studies.
Cardioprotection is an action that contributes to the protection of heart integrity against damage or injury.
In other words, cardioprotection is a process in which substances or medicines are used including an herbal remedy to protect heart muscle tissues against ischemic insult and deoxygenation injury.
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a class of conditions associated with the dysfunction of the arteries and heart.
Coronary artery disease caused by narrowing of the arteries, heart attack, abnormal heart rhythms, or arrhythmias, and stroke are the most common types of cardiovascular diseases found in the Western world.
The most common symptoms of CVD include persistent fatigue, shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, and fainting.
If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule out the CVD possibility.
The exact causes of cardiovascular diseases are unidentified. However, according to epidemiological studies, the most prevalent factors include aging, and smoking. lack of exercise. unhealthy diet. obesity. high blood pressure and cholesterol, and family history.
Out of many risk factors, an unhealthy lifestyle is one of the major risk factors that cause the onset of CVD, some researchers suggested.
Dr. Haskell WL in the investigation of cardiovascular disease prevention and lifestyle interventions
said, "While heredity can be a major factor for some people, their personal health habits and environmental/cultural exposure are more important factors".
And, "Not smoking, being physically active, eating a heart-healthy diet, staying reasonably lean, and avoiding major stress and depression are the major components of an effective CVD prevention program. For people at high risk of CVD, medications frequently need to be added to a healthy lifestyle to minimize their risk of a heart attack or stroke, particularly in persons with conditions such as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, or hyperglycemia. Maintaining an effective CVD prevention program in technologically advanced societies cannot be achieved by many high-risk persons without effective and sustained support from a well-organized health care system".
The results strongly suggested by lifestyle change has a strong implication in the prevention of CVD.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
With an aim to find a potent compound that processes cardioprotective effects, researchers investigated the cardioprotective effect of curcumin in NE-induced cardiac apoptosis. According to the tested assays, curcumin protected the cardiomyocytes against apoptosis significantly.
Furthermore, the injection of curcumin also reverted cardiomyocyte damage back to the normal physiological state.
In other words, curcumin protected the integrity of heart muscle cells against Norepinephrine (NE) in the induction of the onset of cardiomyopathy and heart failure.
Dr. Manghani C, the lead scientist said, "Curcumin has the potential to act as a therapeutic agent for the attenuation of NE-induced cardiac cell death and modulation of apoptosis in H9c2 cardiomyocytes".
Taken altogether, turmeric may be considered a cardioprotective supplement for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Ginger in the Promotion of #WeightLoss in Obese Populations, Studies Find
Kyle J. Norton
In seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have a vegetable in the induction of weight loss, according to studies.
Weight loss is a process that intentionally reduces the total body mass by decreasing fluid, body fat, adipose tissue, or lean mass.
Due to the widespread obesity in North America (over 68% of the US population is either overweight or obese), many weight loss products were created by manufacturers. Weight loss products is a 66 billion business in the US, according to the statistic provided by the Marketdata LLC research firm. And the business continues to grow at a rapid rate.
Is the weight loss products work? I don't think so. Otherwise, the percentage of the overweight population in the US should be decreased substantially.
In other words, all weight loss products may have a complex structure or a long-term commitment before the results can be seen.
The National Institutes of Health wrote, "You might be surprised to learn that makers of weight-loss supplements rarely carry out studies in people to find out whether their product works and is safe. And when studies are done, they usually involve only small numbers of people who take the supplement for just a few weeks or months. To know whether a weight-loss supplement can help people lose weight safely and keep it off, larger groups of people need to be studied for a longer time.".
In short, most weight products are buy-at-your-own-risk products.
In fact, everyone knows, the proven ways to lose weight are eating healthful foods, cutting calories, and being physically active.
Dr. Catherine M. Champagne and colleagues in the investigation of healthy diets and weight loss, wrote, "Increased intake of fruits and vegetables was associated with weight loss in Phases I and II: 0.29 kg per 6-months (p<0.0001) and 0.04 kg per 6-months (p=0.0062), respectively, per 1-serving increase. Substitution of carbohydrates for fat and protein for carbohydrates was associated with weight loss during both phases".
And, "Increasing dairy intake was associated with significant weight loss during Phase II (−0.17 kg per 6-months per 1-serving increase, p=0.0002), but not in Phase I. Dietary fiber revealed no significant findings".
The results strongly suggested that if you want to lose weight, you better follow a healthy diet with an increased intake of fruits and vegetables.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.
The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.
Scientists on finding a herbal remedy that has the potential in stimulating weight loss examined the dietary supplements containing green tea, capsaicin, and ginger extracts on weight loss and metabolic profiles among overweight women.
The randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial included 50 overweight women who satisfied the criteria and guidelines.
Selected candidates were randomly divided into 2 groups. Group A received dietary supplements containing 125 mg green tea, 25 mg capsaicin, and 50 mg ginger extracts (n = 25) group B received placebos (n = 25) twice with lunch and twice with dinner daily for 8 weeks.
Supplement treatment groups showed a significant decrease in weight and body mass index compared to the control.
Women who received the supplement exerted a substantial improvement in metabolic profiles including decreased serum insulin concentrations, insulin resistance (-0.5 ± 0.8 vs. -0.05 ± 0.6, p = 0.01), and increased insulin sensitivity, compared to control.
Futhermore, the antioxidant enzymes produced by the host in the supplement group also was enhanced compared to the control.
The results indicated that daily intake of the supplement may have a positive impact on inducing weight loss by improving the body's metabolism and antioxidant activity.
Dr, Taghizadeh M and colleagues wrote in the final report, "Taking green tea, capsaicin, and ginger co-supplements for 8 weeks among overweight women had beneficial effects on weight, BMI, markers of insulin metabolism and plasma GSH levels".
In order to reveal more information about using ginger to lose weight, researchers investigated the effect of ginger intake on weight loss, glycemic control, and lipid profiles among overweight and obese subjects by reaching the medical literature online.
The selection of the quality of the studies is based on guidelines of the Cochrane risk of bias tool.
According to the 14 studies with 473 subjects included in the meta-analysis, supplementation with ginger significantly decreased body weight (BW), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), hip ratio (HR), and fasting glucose, compared to placebo.
Moreover, decreased insulin resistance and significantly increased HDL-cholesterol levels were also observed in the ginger treatment groups.
Surprisingly, ginger supplements showed no effect on body mass index (BMI), insulin, triglycerides, and total- and LDL cholesterol.
Dr.Maharlouei N, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders said, "Overall, the current meta-analysis demonstrated that ginger intake reduced BW, WHR, HR, fasting glucose and HOMA-IR, and increased HDL-cholesterol, but did not affect insulin, BMI, triglycerides, total- and LDL-cholesterol levels".
Taken altogether, ginger used alone or combined with other supplements may be considered a functional remedy for inducing weight loss in overweight and obese populations, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Curcumin Found in #Turmeric Reduces the Levels of Proinflammatory Cytokines And Markers of Livertoxicity, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a kitchen spice that processes bioactive ingredients for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction with no side effects, according to studies.
Metabolism is a natural chemical process of organisms, including humans with the aim to sustain- life.
According to the purposes of the bioprocess, human metabolism can be classified into the process to convert food to energy by breaking down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats to run cellular processes and eliminate nitrogenous wastes.
Metabolic dysfunction is a condition caused by any interruption of the aforementioned processes.
In other words, metabolic dysfunction induces the production of excess or a reduced amount of substances needed to stay healthy.
A metabolic disorder can be caused by genetic proposition-induced inborn errors of metabolism, or acquired by an individual in the lifetime
There are many risk factors associated with the onset of metabolic dysfunction depending on the types of disruption such as abnormal blood glucose metabolism-induced type 2 diabetes.
Diseases associated with metabolic dysfunction can be moderate or severe depending on the organs involved, including liver or respiratory failure, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis), and HIV/AIDS.
Symptoms of metabolic dysfunction are varied among individuals depending totally on the type of disorder.
Some mild conditions of metabolic dysfunction can be managed with only lifestyle change, others may require the long-term intake of particular medication accompanied by a healthy diet and moderate exercise such as diabetes.
With an aim to find a natural compound for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction, researchers examined the potential capacity of curcumin, contained in Curcuma longa extract (Biocurcuma™), in the attenuation of risperidone-induced metabolic dysfunction in an animal model.
The study involved 4 groups of mice that were treated once a week, for 22 weeks with an intraperitoneal injection of risperidone (Risperdal) at a dose of 12.5 mpk.
One group of mice in the risperidone-treated group was fed a diet with 0.05% Biocurcuma™ (curcumin), one of the vehicle-treated group and two other groups received the standard diet.
The curcumin treatment group inhibited the risperidone effect in reducing spontaneous motricity (motor function) but failed to impede de risperidone-induced increase in food intake.
In other words, curcumin failed to reduce de risperidone-induced weight gain and steatosis. but decreased visceral adiposity stored within the abdominal cavity and decreased the risperidone-induced abnormal enlargement of the liver.
Furthermore, curcumin protected the liver enzymes associated with lipid and glucose metabolism against overexpression in the induction of metabolic dysfunction by modulating the risperidone-induced glucose intolerance and hypertriglyceridemia.
Moreover, the curcumin treatment group also showed reduced levels of markers of hepatotoxicity (ALAT, ASAT) and proinflammatory cytokines expression caused by risperidone (Risperdal).
Dr. Auger F, the lead scientist said, "These findings support that nutritional doses of curcumin contained in Curcuma longa extract are able to partially counteract the risperidone-induced metabolic dysfunction in mice".
The findings suggested that Curcuma longa extract inhibited metabolic dysfunction through a number of mechanisms involving adipocytes, pancreatic cells, hepatic stellate cells, macrophages, and muscle cells.
Taken altogether, turmeric and its bioactive compound curcumin may be considered functional remedies for the treatment of syndrome and diseases associated with metabolic dysfunction, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Honey Inhibits #RefluxEsophagitis Through the Production of PronflammatoryCytokines and Antioxidant Enzymes
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the treatment of reflux esophagitis, some studies found.
Acid Reflux or heartburn is a condition characterized by the going back up of acidic stomach contents to the esophagus. Most cases of acid reflux are happened immediately after eating causing a burning sensation or pain in the lower chest area.
According to the statistics, in the US, approximately, 20% of people with acid reflux will develop gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). More than 65% of people who suffer from acid reflux are 40 years old or older. And, 15 to 30 5 of the U.S. population has GERD.
Too much tea, coffee, and alcohol smoking pregnancy, obesity, and eating habits such as eating close to bedtime, eating a large meal, and eating fatty and fried foods are some of the risk factors that initiate the early onset of acid reflux, according to epidemiological studies.
Believe it or not, long-term intake of certain medications such as bronchodilators for asthma, progestin for birth control or to treat abnormal menstrual bleeding, sedatives for insomnia and anxiety, and calcium channel blockers for high blood pressure.
Dr. Zeynel Mungan and colleagues in examing the medication risk of GERD wrote, "Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is common in many communities, is associated with structural factors, eating habits, and the use of certain drugs".
And, "The use of such drugs can lead to the emergence of GERD and can also exacerbate existing reflux symptoms. These drugs can contribute to GERD by directly causing mucosal damage, by reducing lower esophageal sphincter pressure (LESP), or by affecting esophagogastric motility".
Therefore, if you currently taking some of the aforementioned medications, please make sure that you know all the side effects for preventive measures.
Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The rich golden liquid is considered one healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener many people.
Scientists finding a natural remedy for the treatment of acid reflux investigated the honey effect on reflux oesophagitis (RE).
Injection honey displayed a strong effect on reflux oesophagitis by mediator inhibiting the free radical expression which has been found to be mediators in the generation of RE.
Furthermore, besides inhibiting the overexpression of free radicals, honey also promoted the production of antioxidant enzymes in the host, leading to a balanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.
Moreover, honey injection also reduced the levels of inflammation by inhibiting the nitric oxide and prostaglandin E2 production associated with free radicals and inflammation, respectively.
The effects of honey against RE are also attributed to the nature of high density, high viscosity, and low surface tension, which makes them stay longer in the esophagus as a coating on the mucous membrane.
Additionally, researchers also found that the anti-RE activity of honey was also due to its non-peroxide antibacterial activity.
The findings suggested honey inhibits the onset of progression RE through a number of mechanisms, including proteins associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and antioxidant enzymes produced by the honey and the host.
Taken together, honey may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of reflux esophagitis.

#Herbal #Butterbur Exhibits Cytotoxic Effects and Enhances the Immune System Against #Cancer, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a medicinal remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancer with no side effects, according to studies.
Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells grows in a disordered and uncontrollable way in our body, due to changes in cellular DNA.
Most cases of cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissue of the organ. At the 0 stage, due to the very small size of the tumor, most patients do not experience any symptoms.
However, at the later stage of the tumor progression, if undetected, the large size of the tumor can suppress and break the nearby small blood vessel, leading to internal bleeding and severe if the tumor also suppresses the nearby nerve cells.
Primary cancer cells at this advanced stage can also travel a distance away from the original site to affect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.
Symptoms of cancer at this stage are totally dependent on the affected area, including vomiting blood in oral and lung cancers and blood in the urine in bladder cancer. hoarseness in throat cancer. ... Persistent lumps in the breast and lymph cancer and indigestion or difficulty swallowing in digestive-related cancers.
Researchers do not know the exact causes of cancers, but they do know, according to epidemiological studies that age, alcohol cancer, chronic Inflammation, genetic proposition, unhealthy diet, change of hormones use of immunosuppression, infectious agents, obesity, exposure to radiation and sunlight, use of tobacco are most common risk factors associated with the onset of some specific cancers.
Some researchers in the investigation of weakened immune function in risk of cancer suggested people with a weakened immune system lost the function
1) to stimulate the T cell's inactivation of the B cells in the production of p53, a tumor suppressor gene, or antioncogene that inhibits the cancer cell proliferation and tumor development and
2) to stimulate the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to kill off the DNA alternated damage cells in the acute phase of inflammation.
In other words, if you have a strong immune system, your risk of cancer is substantially lower compared to the general public.
Butterbur, found in wet, marshy, damp land, including wetlands, riversides, forests, etc., is a creeping underground plant, genus Petasites of 15 -20 species, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to the Northern Hemisphere. the herbal plant has been used in herbal medicine used as a pain reliever in the digestive system, including the stomach, bile ducts, duodenum, etc.
The chemical constituents of Butterbur include Petioles, petasitene and pethybrene, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-6''-O-acetylglucoside, and rutin, caffeic acid, alkaloids, S-petasin, and iso-S-petasin, etc.
The Shandong University at Weihai, on the finding a natural compound for the treatment of cancer with no side effects examined a new bakkenolide isolated from Butterbur anti-cancer effects.
The new bakkenolide exerted a potent cytotoxic activity against a number of cultured human cancer cells, including human cervical carcinoma (HeLa), human breast cancer (MCF-7) and murine Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) cell lines.
According to the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service in vitro methanol extract from the leaves in the rat liver epithelial cells. significantly decreased spontaneous beta-galactosidase activity and beta-galactosidase activity induced by a mutagen.
Elevated beta-galactosidase (beta-gal) enzyme activity is an indication of the tumor and metastatic expression.
All doses of the extract (0.08-100 mg/plate) decreased the reversion frequency induced by benzo (alpha)pyrene (BaP) in S. Typhimurium TA 98 of the Salmonella typhimurium.
In an additional analysis of the experiment, PJ extract showed greater cytotoxic effects on the human stomach, colon, and uterus cancer cells than on other cancer cell types and normal rat liver epithelial cells.
Furthermore, PJ significantly increased the number of gap junction proteins associated with tumor suppression in a dose-dependent manner.
Dr. the lead scientist said, "Based on these findings, PJ is suggested to contain antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic compounds".
Taken altogether, herbal Butterbur may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of cancers.

#Anthocyanin-#rich #Herbal #Bilberry Modulates the Expression of Energy Metabolism Against the Risk Obesity, According to Scientists
Kyle J. Norton
Bilberry may be the next potential target for pharmaceutical companies to extract a single ingredient medicine for improvement of energy metabolism, according to studies.
Energy metabolism is a process to generate energy from protein, fat, and carbohydrate or fat already stored in the body.
Although carbohydrates and fat are considered the major sources of energy in the diet, protein is necessary for all kinds of biological processes but less in the direct production of energy purposes.
Energy metabolism alterations are found associated with a large number of diseases including mitochondrial diseases, acute coronary syndrome, chronic kidney disease, asthma, and even cancer.
And, energy metabolism alternation can also affect all organs and tissues functioning.
Certain factors can increase and decrease the rate of energy metabolism, such as the immune cells require energy to maintain cellular viability and to perform specific immune functions, including
* Body size such as weight and height
* Body composition: fat tissue has a lower metabolic activity than muscle tissue.
* Aging: decrease muscle mass and decrease energy metabolism.
* Gender women have a slow rate of energy metabolism compared to men.
Dr. Prabhakar, the lead scientist in the investigation of the energy metabolism on obesity, said, "Energy used by the body is described in terms of the metabolic rate underlying passive and active conditions which are further correlated to body weight".
And, "Energy metabolism and the role of carbohydrates, lipids, and protein in foods are areas of emerging research with a therapeutic approach against obesity and related biological disorders". of e
The results strongly suggested that if you are obese, you are at higher risk of diseases associated with a decreased rate of energy metabolism, such as insulin resistance.
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrub in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The herbal plant has been used as foods and herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
Researchers on finding the natural ingredient for the improvement of energy metabolism investigated the bilberry activity in genes expressed in the intestinal mucosa which is responsible for nutrient absorption and waste secretion.
Injection of bilberry improved intestinal barrier functioning by enhancing the balance of gut microbiota, thus increasing the absorption of nutrients.
Furthermore, male C57BL/6J mice (n = 52) selected for the study received a control low-fat diet (LFD; 10 kcal% fat) for 6 weeks followed by 24 weeks of either LFD (n = 13) or high-fat diet (HFD; 45 kcal% fat; n = 13) or HFD supplemented with 0.1% w/w of the flavanol compound epicatechin (HFD+E; n = 13) or an anthocyanin-rich bilberry extract (HFD+B; n = 13), researchers found that
* The switch from an LFD to an HFD increases the plasma cholesterol and hepatic lipid content in the non-anthocyanin-rich bilberry extract treatment group.
* The polyphenol compounds in the HFD supplemented with 0.1% w/w of the flavanol compound epicatechin could not prevent HFD-induced systemic rise of inflammatory levels compared to the bilberry treatment group.
* The findings strongly supported the use of supplementation of HFD with an anthocyanin-rich bilberry extract for the beneficial effects on the systemic early inflammatory response associated with HFD-induced obesity.
Dr. the leads scientist wrote, "On the tissue level, long-term treatment with bilberry attenuated TNF-α expression in adipose tissue".
In other words, the intake of anthocyanin-rich bilberry extract lowers the level of systemic inflammation in the adipose tissue against the onset of metabolic syndrome-associated chronic pathologies.
Taken together, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy to improve intestinal barrier functioning in energy metabolism by reducing intestinal inflammation and promoting healthy adipocytes.
