In seeking a natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have found a kitchen-pungent spice for the prevention and treatment of sepsis, according to studies.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find a natural compound or food for the treatment of sepsis, researchers investigated the effects of a phenolic alkenone isolated from ginger in various pharmacological activities, including sepsis.

Injection of ginger exerted a modulatory effect on HMGB1-mediated septic responses and survival rate in a mouse model of sepsis.

The modulation of ginger was attributed to the suppression of the production of inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6 and the activation of proteins associated with inflammation induced by HMGB.

High mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a protein associated with the immune protective response by restoring the endothelial cells which line the interior surface of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels integrity.

Furthermore, the injection of ginger also inhibited HMGB1-mediated hyperpermeability and leukocyte migration in the initiation of inflammation in mice.

Moreover, in vivo, ginger inhibited lymphopoiesis (CLP) in stimulating the production of the release of HMGB1, sepsis-related mortality, and tissue injury.

In order to reveal more information about ginger antisepsis activity, researchers examined zingerone (ZGR), a bioactive compound isolated from ginger on TGFBIp-mediated septic responses.

Similar to that of the above, ZGR reduced the TGFBIp-mediated severe inflammatory responses in human endothelial cells and mice.

Injection of ZGR suppressed TGFBIp-induced sepsis lethality and pulmonary injury.

Dr. Min G, the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders wrote in the final report, "ZGR could be a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of various severe vascular inflammatory diseases via inhibition of the TGFBIp signaling pathway".

Taken together, ginger may be considered a functional remedy for the treatment of sepsis, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Scientists may have found a herbal remedy that processed significant antioxidant activity against the onset and progression of oxidative stress-related diseases, according to studies.

Oxidative stress-related conditions are the class of diseases associated with cellular damage, including alternation of cell DNA, and damage of lipids and proteins.

Oxidative stress can be acute or chronic. Acute oxidative stress is caused by a sudden burst of free radicals due to stress or external sources, in most cases can be inhibited by increasing antioxidant enzymes in the lung.

Chronic oxidative stress is caused by the unbalanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by our bodies. The condition is either caused by overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidants enzymes or both.

There are many risk factors that cause oxidative stress. Artichoke extracts showed good efficiency in the inhibition in vitro of LDL oxidation. Injection of artichoke extracts also increased the levels of antioxidant glutathione peroxidase against oxidative damage in the tested subjects compared to the control group.

The leaf blades of most of the genotypes have a high content of flavonoids (mainly luteolin glycoside derivatives), which ranged between 49 and 78% of total phenolic compounds (TPC).

Petioles and midribs phenolic acids (mainly hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives) were the main phenolic compounds, ranging between 64 and 76% of TPC,

The antioxidant activity of blades was significantly higher than that of petiole and midribs for all the genotypes according to the tested assays.

The results of antioxidant differentiation suggested that artichoke leaves (blades, petioles, and midribs) show different bioactive compound profiles in stimulating the different levels of antioxidant properties.

Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of oxidative stress-related diseases through its antioxidant activity, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Emodin influenced nuclear factor kappa-B signal transduction pathway, a protein associated with the controls of transcription of DNA, cytokine production, and cell survival. by inhibiting activation of (nuclear transcription factor-kappaB (NF-κB) p65 involved) a protein complex involved in the immune response and (degradation inhibitor of NF-κB α (IκBα), and degradation of the cellular response to inflammation.

Furthermore, the efficacy of emodin is also attributed to the activation of the signaling pathways associated with the cellular responses to environmental stress and stimuli and the production of pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines.

The researcher wrote in the conclusion of the study, "Emodin could exert beneficial effects on experimental mastitis induced by LPS and may represent a novel treatment strategy for mastitis".


Moreover, in order to investigate the effects of herbal Cascara Sagrada and (Mastitis), researchers examined the herbal Cascara Sagrada and (Mastitis) therapeutic potential photogenically derived aloin, another major compound of the herb, mediated nanosilver particles (AAgNPs), prepared by reduction of silver nitrate with aloin, in Staphylococcus aureus-induced murine mastitis.

The study included a total of 40 female mice divided into five groups of eight animals each.

* Groups II-V inoculated with 20 μl of 24 h broth culture of S. aureus containing 4.0 × 105 cfu/quarter under ketamine anesthesia. After 6 h post inoculation, and

* Groups III and IV received 20 μl of aloin nanosilver (AAgNPs) through intramammary and intraperitoneal routes, respectively.

* Group V received antibiotic cefepime at 1 mg/kg body weight through the intraperitoneal route.

After 18 hours of post-treatment, injection of the compound showed a minimum inhibitory concentration of 21.8 ng/ml against S. aureus.

Nanosilver particles (AAgNPs) showed a significant reduction of 98% of the poly-morpho nuclear cell, a category of white blood cells in the mediation of the phase of inflammation, compared to only 50% in an antibiotic.

Taken together, herbal Cascara Sagrada processed abundantly bioactive compounds emodin and aloin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of mastitis.

Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the treatment of bad breath, according to studies.
Bad breath also known as halitosis, is a condition caused by an unpleasant odor of the mouth.

The causes of bad breath may be results from a combination of food, tobacco products, poor dental hygiene, health problems, dry mouth, oral infections, dental problems, or medications.

However, chemicals produced by some diseases, such as some cancers, and metabolic disorders, can cause a distinctive breath odor.

Chronic reflux of stomach acids (gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD) may be considered a major cause of bad breath in older adults.

The most common treatment of bad breath in the Western world is the use of mouth rinses and toothpaste if the bad breath is the result of bacterial infection.

People with bad breath due to lose-denture may need to see their dentists for correction.

However, if the bad breath is associated with dental diseases such as gum disease then seeing a related field specialist may be necessary.

Some researchers suggested that obesity is also tied to bad breath. The Tel Aviv University in examing the risk of bad breath in obese wrote, " the more overweight you are, the more likely your breath will smell unpleasant to those around you".

Manuka honey contains the typical antibacterial substance methylglyoxal (MGO) which has been found to process a strong antibacterial activity against oral bacteria.

The study to compare the before and after intake of Manuka honey or Acacia honey and their halitosis effect included 10 healthy subjects (average age: 36 years old, 5 men and 5 women).


The concentrations of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) produced by the oral bacteria and anaerobic bacteria in the mouth decreased after intake of both honey, but faster in the Manuka honey compared to those of Acacia honey.

Manuka honey showed 127 times higher amounts of MGO than acacia honey, according to analysis.

These results clearly suggested that the efficacy of honey in the inhibition of bad breath was attributed to the strong antibacterial activity of MGO.


In order to reveal more information about honey's anti-bad breath activity, researchers investigated the effect of honey in preventing gingivitis and dental caries.


In a total of 20 female orthodontic patients between the ages of from12–18 participated in this randomized controlled study, researchers compared the effect of honey with either 10% sucrose or 10% sorbitol which served as positive and negative controls.


Honey injection showed significant differences in pH compared to the pH observed in the sorbitol group. The maximum pH drop occurred at 5 min in both the honey and sucrose groups and the pH following sucrose exposure fell <5.5 and was associated with a 30 min recovery time.

Furthermore, bacterial counts were in the honey treatment group significantly reduced compared to the other treatment groups.

Moreover, honey also significantly inhibited the growth of all studied strains compared to the inhibition observed with antibiotics.

Taken together, honey, particularly, Manuka honey or Acacia honey may be considered functional remedies for the prevention and treatment of oral breath, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Curcumin Found in #Turmeric Induces Cancer Cell Apoptosis at the Early Onset of #CervicalCancer, in Vitro

The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that opens at the top of the vagina. The cervix acts a transition area for the vaginal lining (squamous epithelium) to the uterus type (columnar epithelium) through the transitional area (squamous columnar epithelium) to host the development of the fetus.
Cervical cancer is a medical condition caused by cells growing abnormally in the cervix uteri or cervical area due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of cervical cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissue in the cervix uteri or cervical area before penetrating into deeper layers to form a tumor by proliferation.

Scientists may have found a natural remedy which processes the potential to treat chronic mild stress, according to studies.
Acute stress is a natural and emotional reaction that arises in response to a terrifying or traumatic event or witnessing a traumatic event. People react to acute stress differently depending on life experiences.

Chronic stress, a medical condition is a result of a person who can not respond to emotional pressure properly, leading to traumatic stress which he or she can not control.

Untreated ongoing chronic stress has been found to exacerbate many serious health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and personality disorders.


Epidemiological studies suggested that certain physical health problems are also associated with patients with long-term stress, including heart disease, high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms, heart attacks, and stroke.


There are many risk factors involving the onset of chronic stress. However, job-related chronic stress has been found in most American adults in the Western world.


The American Institute of Stress in examing the chronic stress in American adults wrote, "Numerous studies show that job stress is far and away the major source of stress for American adults and that it has escalated progressively over the past few decades. Increased levels of job stress as assessed by the perception of having little control but lots of demands have been demonstrated to be associated with increased rates of heart attack, hypertension, and other disorders".

According to the American Workplace VII statistics, 80% of workers feel stress on the job, nearly half say they need help in learning how to manage stress and 42% say their coworkers need such help.


Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on finding natural ingredients or whole food for the treatment of chronic mild stress (CMS), a major contribution to atherosclerosis in the previous study examined the effects of 6-gingerol (6-Gin), a phenolic component of ginger (Zingiber officinale) anti-chronic stress activity.

6-gingerol (6-Gin) has long been found to process numerous pharmacological properties, such as anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective effects, according to epidemiological studies.

CMS ApoE-/- mice used in the study were given a high-fat diet (HFD) to induce the development of atherosclerosis in-fed before administrating 6-Gin.

Mice were exposed to CMS for 20 weeks, at week 5, they were fed with a high-fat diet (HFD), then received 6-Gin (20 mg/kg/day, intragastrically) treatment.

CMS before the application of a high-fat diet exerted a significant effect in reducing body weight gain, sucrose preference, and locomotor activity, the expression of some of the core symptoms of depression.

Furthermore, CMS mice fed with a high-fat diet (HFD) after week 5 also showed increased plaque formation, elevation of plasma total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterin, and proinflammatory cytokines including TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, all indicated the development of atherosclerotic lesions.

However, injection of 6-Gin not only reduced the expression induced by a high-fat diet but modulated the function of enzymes activated glucose and fatty acid uptake and oxidation, catalyzed the committed step in fatty acid synthesis, produced cholesterol and other isoprenoids, particularly the lipid synthesis in the liver tissues.

These results suggested the role of ginger in alleviating atherosclerotic lesions and reversed the expression levels of lipid profiles and inflammatory cytokines in stressed mice.

Dr. Wang S, the lead scientist wrote, "The antiatherosclerotic effects of 6-Gin is mediated in part by the AMPK signaling pathway, which is closely associated with cholesterol synthesis and lipid accumulation".

Where AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) plays a key role as a master regulator of cellular energy homeostasis, in response to low glucose, hypoxia, ischemia, and heat shock.

Additionally, CMS also showed an improvement in several aspects of chronic stress on the injection of 6-Gin.

The finding clearly suggested 6-Gin attenuates arteriosclerosis in ApoE-/- mice exposed to CMS and HFD, and it may be a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of atherosclerosis similar to that of conventional medicine.


Taken altogether, ginger-processed abundantly bioactive compound 6-gingerol may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of chronic mild stress and atherosclerosis, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
