#Bromelain Suppresses the Symptoms of Osteoarthritis (OA) Compared to #Diclofenac, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Osteoarthritis is an inflammation of joints caused by the depletion of the cartilage on the ends of the bones due to wear and tear over time.
The disease is one most common form of arthritis that affects millions of people worldwide.

According to the statistics, in the US, approximately 10% of men and 13% of women aged 60 years or older have osteoarthritis (OA).

The most common risk factors found in patients with OA are older adults, female gender, overweight and obesity, knee injury, repetitive use of joints, and low bone density.

Besides pain in the joints, the other most common symptoms of OA include tenderness, stiffness, low flexibility, and grating sensation.

Conventionally, treatment of OA is focused on managing symptoms, by reducing pain, stiffness, and swelling through the use of painkillers, improving joint mobility and flexibility, and maintaining a healthy weight by exercise.

Some researchers suggested that the high prevalence of OA in the US has become a burden to the health care cost and economic burden.

Dr.Bitton R, the lead scientist at the Health Plan of Nevada wrote, "Approximately one-third of direct OA expenditures are allocated for medications, much of which goes toward pain-related agents. Hospitalization costs comprise nearly half of the direct costs, although these expenditures are consumed by only 5% of OA patients who undergo knee or hip replacement surgery".

And, "Indirect costs for OA are also high, largely a result of work-related losses and home-care costs".

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

To find a natural compound for diseases associated with inflammation, researchers investigated the effects of bromelain in mild-to-moderate knee OA patients.

The randomized, single-blind, active-controlled pilot study included 40 knee OA patients randomized to receive oral bromelain (500 mg/day) or diclofenac (100 mg/day).

At week 4, both bromelain and diclofenac-treated groups showed an improvement in total the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and pain subscales compared to the baseline.

According to the tested assays, bromelain and diclofenac groups exerted similar effects after 4 weeks.

At week 16 of bromelain treatment, patients had improved total WOMAC scores (12.2 versus 25.5), pain subscales (2.4 versus 5.6), stiffness subscales (0.8 versus 2.0), and function subscales (9.1 versus 17.9), and physical component of SF-36 (73.3 versus 65.4) as compared with baseline values.

In other words, bromelain reduced symptoms and improved quality of life in OA patients by inhibiting the levels of oxidative stress and overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines at week 16.

Based on the results, researchers after taking other factors into account wrote, "Our results show the inhibitory effect of enzyme therapy on collagen-induced arthritis in rats, as well as the efficacy of cyclosporin".

Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis (OA), pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Yoga Intervention Improves the Psychological Well-Being and Quality of Life QOL in Chronic Neck Pain Patients, According to Clinical Trials

Kyle J. Norton

Yoga intervention may have a positive effect in reducing chronic neck pain, a significant public health problem with only very few evidence-based treatment options, a university study suggested.

Yoga, the ancient technique practice for harmonized external and internal body well-being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been well-known for people in the Western world and some parts of Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes and supported by health advocates.

In the study of a total of 51 patients (mean age 47.8 y; 82.4% female) randomized to yoga (n=25) and exercise (n=26) intervention, with the yoga group attending a 9-week yoga course and the exercise group receiving a self-care manual on home-based exercises for neck pain relief, researchers found that
1. After the end of the study, the yoga group expressed significantly less neck pain intensity compared to the exercise group
2. The yoga group also showed less disability and better mental quality of life
3. The same group also experienced an improvement in motion and the pressure pain threshold.

Dr. Cramer H, the lead author said, "Yoga was more effective in relieving chronic nonspecific neck pain than a home-based exercise program" and "Yoga seems to influence the functional status of neck muscles, as indicated by improvement of physiological measures of neck pain."

Additionally, in the study of 51 patients with chronic nonspecific neck pain (mean age 47.8 years; 82.4% female) assigned to a 9-week yoga group intervention, researchers at the University of Duisburg-Essen, filed the following reports at 12-month follow-up, in patients expressed
1. Pain intensity decreased from 48.81 to 32.31,
2. Neck-related disability decreased from 25.26  to 19.49 and
3. Body pain in the SF-36((short-form 36 questionnaires) improved from 49.37  to 59.26

The study also indicated that
1. Improvements in pain intensity depend on yoga practice during the past 4 weeks
2. Improved neck-related disability and bodily pain depends on regular yoga practice during the past 12 months

According to the returned questionnaire, 68% of patients reported that yoga intervention may have some positive effects on their health.
Dr. Cramer H, once again said, "Sustained yoga practice seems to be the most important predictor of long-term effectiveness".

More importantly, In a pilot randomized controlled clinical trial of 72 patients randomized to a 9-week Iyengar yoga program with weekly 90-minute classes (n = 38) or to a self-care/exercise program (n = 38) with patients examined at baseline and after 4 and 10 weeks, researchers filed the following reports
1. Mean pain at rest was reduced from 44.3 to 13.0 at week 10 in the yoga group
2. Pain at motion was reduced from 53.4 to 22.4 at week 10, compared to the interval of 49.4 to 39.9 in the self-care/exercise group
3. Yoga intervention also showed significant treatment effects on pain-related apprehension, disability, QOL, and psychological outcomes.
4 Yoga intervention was safe or well tolerated

After taking into account other risk factors, the study postulated that yoga appears to be an effective treatment for chronic neck pain with possibly additional effects on psychological well-being and QOL.

Taken together, there is no doubt that yoga therapy may have a potential effect in reducing chronic neck pain as well as improving psychological well-being and quality of life, but sustained yoga practice seems to be the most important predictor of long-term effectiveness.

#Alliin Suppresses the Progression of #OvarianCancer in Vivo, Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Ovarian cancer is a chronic medical condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the tissue of the ovary.
Most cases of ovarian cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the ovary before spreading to the deeper layers to form a tumor.

In the very early stage, due to the very small size of the tumor, most patients are asymptomatic. However, as the disease progression, patients may experience symptoms shared commonly with other types of cancer accompanied by specific symptoms of abdominal bloating or swelling, discomfort in the pelvis area, and changes in bowel habits, such as constipation.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, ovarian cancer ranks fifth in cancer deaths among women, accounting for more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system.

A woman's risk of ovarian cancer is 1 in 78. and the risk of the lifetime chance of dying from ovarian cancer is about 1 in 108.

The five-year relative survival rate for all types and stages of ovarian cancer is 47 percent, Cancer diagnosed at the early stage have a 5-year survival rate of over 72%.

The exact causes of ovarian cancer are not known. However, according to epidemiological studies genetics preposition such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, family and history of cancer or endometriosis, aging, reproductive history, and infertility and obesity are some of the prevalent factors involved in the onset of ovarian cancer.

The Canadian Cancer Society in the evaluation of the risk of ovarian cancer in women who are never being pregnant or giving birth wrote, "Women who have never been pregnant have a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer than women who have been pregnant".

And, "Researchers think that the lower risk may be because the hormones that are present during pregnancy have a protective effect. It is possible that the higher risk in women who have never been pregnant is linked to the factors that may make it difficult for her to become pregnant".

In other words, women who have at least one pregnancy are at a lower risk of ovarian cancer compared to women who do not.

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide, a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

With an aim to find a natural and potential compound for the treatment of ovarian cancer without inducing adverse effects, researchers examined the efficacy of preparation including chemical conjugate between daidzein and the garlic enzyme alliinase.

According to the tested assays, the conjugate is specifically bound to ovarian cancer cells and upon addition of the prodrug alliin by inducing the cytotoxic allicin molecules in killing the cancer cells.

In vivo, the preparation showed a targeting and antitumor effect confirmed by NIR and bioluminescence imagine in the luciferase-expression of ovarian cancer cells.

Treatment of ovarian tumor-bearing mice with daidzein-alliinase and alliin effectively attenuated tumor progression during the first 12 days.

Compared to the placebo, only small individual foci of luminescence at the site of tumor cells inoculation were found in the treatment group, according to autopsy.

Interestingly, the preparation did not reveal any additional foci of carcinoma or signs of toxicity, according to the histological examination of organs and tissues.

In other words, the chemical conjugate between daidzein and the garlic enzyme alliinase induced ovarian cancer cells apoptosis through its cytotoxic effects without causing harm to nearby healthy cells.

Based on the findings researchers wrote in the final report, "the targeted alliinase conjugates in the presence of alliin, generated therapeutically effective levels of allicin which were capable of suppressing tumor progression of intraperitoneal ovarian cancer in an animal model".

Taken altogether, alliin used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of ovarian cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Chrysin Found in #Honey Is Considered a Natural Depressant Drug Compared to #Fluoxetine, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Depression is a psychological illness that affects a patient mentally, including thinking and feeling, and physically such as loss of interest in physical activity.
The exact causes of depression are not identified. However, some risk factors such as genetic predisposition, personality, stress, and brain chemistry are found to associate with the onset in patients with such a condition.

There are some types of depression which can be classified as follow
1. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is caused by the change in weather. The mood of patients is affected by the weather and time of the year.

2. Postpartum depression is associated with the mother who can not cope with change following the birth of a child.

3. Depression with psychosis is the most severe case of depression as patients have lived in the illusion and loss of touch with reality.

4. Dysthymia, a persistent depressive disorder, also called dysthymia (dis-THIE-me-uh), is considered a chronic form of mild depression.

Most cases of depression in conventional medicine are treated with medication such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and antidepressants, accompanied by psychotherapy.

If you take any aforementioned medicine, please make sure that you know all the side effects for preventive measures.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of the healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

In the course to find a natural agent for the treatment of depression with no side effects, researchers evaluated the chemical compound chrysin found abundantly in honey against chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS).

The study included a 28-day oral treatment with chrysin (5 or 20mg/kg) in female mice subjected to CUMS, compared to the effect of fluoxetine.

Before treatment of chrysin, CUMS applied for 28 days induced a decrease in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF) levels as well as in the Na(+), K(+)-ATPase activity.

Where brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF ) as a neurotransmitter modulator, plays an important role in neuronal survival and growth as well as in learning and memory.

The nerve growth factor (NGF) is a neurotrophic factor involved in the regulation of growth, maintenance, proliferation, and survival of certain target neurons. Reduced levels of nerve growth factor (NGF) have been found in patients with depression.

Na + /K + -ATPase is an enzyme with a function in maintaining resting potential, affecting transport, and regulating cellular volume.

Clinical evidence suggested that Na+, K+-ATPase-induced activation of intracellular signaling participates in the mechanisms underlying patients with mood disorders.

Chrysin (20mg/kg) and fluoxetine improved the BDNF and NGF levels in non-stressed mice and in CUMS treatment mice.

Injection of chrysin and fluoxetine treatments also exerted an antidepressant effect by protecting the CUMS rats against all alterations of the decreased production of antioxidant enzymes and increased oxidative stress.

Based on the findings, Dr. Filho CB, the lead scientist, "the up-regulation of BDNF and NGF levels is a mechanism possibly involved in the antidepressant effect of chrysin in mice".

Furthermore, in order to reveal more information about the honey antidepressant property, researchers examined investigated the effect of chrysin in mice exposed to unpredictable chronic stress (UCS).

In UCS applied for 28 days induced depressive-like rats, oral treatment with chrysin (5 or 20mg/kg, 28 days), similarly to fluoxetine (10mg/kg, positive control) inhibited the decrease in the time of grooming in the splash test and increase in the immobility time.

Chrysin (5 or 20mg/kg, 28 days), similar to fluoxetine treatment was also found to inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and elevated corticotropin-releasing hormone and adrenocorticotropic hormone in the UCS-induced depressive-like rats.

Where elevated corticotropin-releasing hormone and adrenocorticotropic hormone were associated with patients with depression.

Moreover, Chrysin (5 or 20mg/kg, 28 days), similar to fluoxetine treatment also attenuated the hormone deficiency such as 5-HT levels in the HP and elevated enzyme and matrixes such as indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase, caspase 3 and 9 activities in the PFC and HP associated with depression-like symptoms, induced by UCS.

Taken altogether, honey-processed bioactive compound chrysin may be considered a functional remedy for the treatment of depression, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study

#Herbal #Artichoke Reduces the Risk of PeriodontalDiseases, through its Anti Inflammatory Activities, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system against stimuli and foreign pathogens which try to enter the body through wounds or injuries.

In the acute phase of infection, after receiving the message transmitted by the central nervous system, the immune macrophages stimulate the blood palette to cover the affected site and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to protect the body against microorganisms.

Some anti-inflammatory cytokines in this phase may also switch to proinflammatory activity, causing overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines.

In some cases, depending on the severity of the wound, overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines may cause damage and death of nearby cells, leading to the formation of scars.

The most common symptoms of the acute phase of infection are pain, swelling, and redness in the affected areas.

If the immune macrophages kill off the foreign pathogens in the acute phase of infection, the inflammatory progress proceeds to other stages including stage one of an acute phase of infection followed by the repair and regeneration stage, where collagen fibers are formed then by the remodeling and maturation stage, where the new tissue continue to remodel, strengthen and improve.

Chronic inflammation occurs if the immune system can not kill off all invaders within a set period, it will adapt to the new change, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, the major cause of various chronic illnesses, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Researchers on the finding a natural therapeutics for the treatment of Porphyromonas gingivalis, the disease that has been found to induce the expression of inflammatory cytokines that promote inflammatory bone destruction, investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of an extract from Cynara scolymus L. and its pharmacologically effective compound cynaropicrin, a sesquiterpene lactone, on human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs).

Human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs)used in the study induced inflammation by lipopolysaccharide (LPS).

Artichoke bioactive compound injection inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in LPS-stimulated HGFs in a dose-dependent manner.

P. gingivalis LPS-induced expression of enzymes and proteins in the cellular response to inflammation were also suppressed by cynaropicrin.

The additional analysis also suggested that cynaropicrin's inhibition of P. gingivalis LPS-induced production pro-inflammatory expression may be due to the inhibition of the activation of the inflammatory pathways.

Dr. Hayata M, the lead scientist said, "These results suggest that cynaropicrin may be useful for preventing periodontal diseases and could prove valuable in the development of more effective preventative approaches for periodontal diseases".

In order to reaffirm the efficacy of artichoke anti-inflammatory activity, researchers at the University of Sfax examined the Artichoke Leaves Extracts (ALE) phytochemical and antioxidant activity by several methods such as DDPH, ABTS, FRAP, and beta-carotene bleaching test.

In the carrageenan (Carr) model-induced paw edema, EtOH extract of ALE contained the highest phenolic, flavonoid and tannin contents and exerted the strongest antioxidants activities, according to the DDPH (94.23%), ABTS (538.75 mmol), FRAP assay (542.62 umol), and β-carotene bleaching (70.74%) compared to the other extracts of ALE.

Moreover, administration of EtOH extract at a dose of 400 mg/kg/bw exhibited a maximum inhibition of inflammation induced by Carr for 3 and 5 hours compared to reference group Indomethacin (Indo).

Based on the finding, Dr. Ben Salem M, the lead scientist wrote, "ALE displayed high potential as a natural source of minerals and phytochemicals compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties".

Taken altogether, artichoke processed abundantly bioactive compound may be considered a functional remedy for the treatment of diseases associated with chronic inflammation, with no side effects, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Antioxidant #Sinigrin Shows A Significant Effect in the Inhibition of Fungal Infection, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

A fungus is a primitive organism, including mushrooms, mold, and mildew found in the air, in the soil, on plants, and in water.
Fungi reproduce through tiny spores in the air if you inhale the spores, it may spread to cause a fungal infection that often starts in the lungs or on the skin.

People with a weakened immune system are more likely to be infected by fungi, including the fungus Aspergillus which causes lung infection.

Similar to other bacteria, there are millions of different fungal species on Earth, but only about 300 are known to infect people.

Conventionally, fungal infection is treated with antibiotics, including topical antifungal ointments or oral medications, depending on the severity of the disease.

If you are currently taking antibiotics for the treatment of fungal infection, please make sure that you know all possible side effects for preventive measures.

The most common symptoms of skin fungal infection are red and cracking or peeling skin accompanied by itching, depending on the location of the affected skin.

In a serious case of fungal lung infection, accumulated fungus fibers, blood clots, and white blood cells may appear in the lungs or sinuses, leading to coughing up blood or fever, chest pain, and difficulty breathing, depending on the size of the accumulation.

In seeking a natural compound for the treatment of fungal infection, researchers analyzed the antifungal infection of the roots of twelve plant spades from bath mycotrophic (hosts of YAM fungi) and non‐mycotropic (non‐hosts) families against the fungus Cladosporium cucumerimun Ellis & Arch.

2 species from the Brassicaceae such as Chenopodiaceae (Spinacea oleracea L., Beta vulgaris L.) showed a significant effect on fungus compared to Brassica kaber (DC.) Wheeler, Brassica napus L., Brassica campestris L., Thlaspi arvense L., Raphanus raphasnistrum L. which showed limited activity.

According to the TLC bioassay, Chloroform extracts of B. Kaber roots appeared to have the greatest quantity of extractable antifungal compounds.

Three antifungal compounds in chloroform extracts from B. Kaber roots were shown to be derived from glucosinolates, containing a high amount of sinigrin.

The finding strongly supports the use of sinigrin for the treatment of fungal infections.

Furthermore, in the differentiation of the fungitoxicity of allyl‐isothiocyanate (AITC) vapor produced from pure sinigrin against Penicillium expansum, the causal agent of blue mold on pears, 5 mg L−1 AITC‐enriched atmosphere showed the best control of blue mold by exposing fruits for 24 h.

At 1 × 103 conidia mL−1to almost 80% at 1 × 106 conidia mL−1, AITC decreased the percentage of infected wounds, compared to >98% of wounds infected in untreated fruits.

Moreover, AITC treatments were effective up to 24 h after inoculation for Conference and 48 h for Kaiser. AITC treatments also controlled a thiabendazole‐resistant strain of P. expansum, reducing the incidence of the blue mold by 90% in both cultivars.

Dr. M. Mari, at the end of the experiment, wrote, "The use of AITC produced from pure sinigrin or from Brassica junceadefatted meal may be an economically viable alternative to synthetic fungicides against P. expansum".

Taken altogether, sinigrin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of fungal infection, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

However, intake of bioactive in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care, as liver toxicity may be induced if overdosed.

#Yoga Intervention Reduces Stress, Anxiety, and Depression Levels and Improves Quality of Life in Alzheimer's disease and AD Caregivers

By Kyle J. Norton

Yoga used in combination with compassion meditation may have a positive impact on improved quality of life, attention, and vitality,... in patients with Alzheimer's disease, a recent study suggested.
Yoga, the ancient technique practice for harmonized external and internal body well being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been well known for people in the Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

A total of 46 volunteers were randomly allocated to two groups, the yoga and compassion meditation program group (n = 25), with program lasted 8 weeks, and comprised three yoga and meditation practices per week, with each session lasting 1 h and 15 min and the control group (CG), researchers, after assessed other co-founders, found that yoga attendees expressed statistically significant improvements (P < 0.05) on quality of life, attention, vitality and self-compassion scores in compared to control.

Taken together, Yoga, the integrated form of exercise not only improved physical and psychological aspects in patients with moderate and severe AD but also reduced stress, anxiety, and depression of familial caregivers in AD patients.
