#Ginger Inhibits #AgeRelatedNeurologicalDisorders through Its Serveral Constituent Activities, According to Scientists

Kyle J. Norton

Age-related neurological disorders or neurodegenerative diseases are the conditions of the progressive death of neurons due to aging, leading to problems with movement (called ataxias), or mental functioning including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that usually starts slowly with mild memory loss first and worsens over time. In severe cases, the elderly with AD may lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment.

Dementia is a general term of neuro-degenerative disease that causes a decline in memory and thinking skills severe enough to reduce a person's ability to perform everyday activities and quality of life, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and Huntington's disease.

For most parts, the causes of these diseases are unknown. researchers cannot explain why elderly with the same health conditions in the same family, some members are susceptible to the onset of dementia while others do not.

Besides aging, geographical, hereditary and viral, and toxicological exposure may also correlate to the development of diseases in the elderly.

Some researchers suggested that an unhealthy lifestyle in the Western world in the induction of obesity may be one of the major causes associated with the onset of the condition.

Dr. Mazon JN, the lead scientist, said, "...evidence has shown a strong correlation between obesity and the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD). Metabolic changes caused by overweight are related to damage to the central nervous system (CNS)".

And, "Metabolic changes caused by overweight are related to damage to the central nervous system (CNS), which can lead to neural death, either by apoptosis or cell necrosis, as well as alter the synaptic plasticity of the neuron".

These results clearly suggested that if you are obese, your risk of neurodegenerative diseases is increased substantially compared to non-obese individuals.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

In the course of continued finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of age-related neurological disorders (ANDs), researchers examined the effects of ginger used in traditional medicine for the treatment of various disease symptoms.

Ginger phytochemicals exhibited anti-ANDs by targeting different ligand sites.

Furthermore, ginger and its constituents, such as 6-gingerol, 6-shogaol, 6-paradol, zingerone, and dehydrozingerone were effective in ameliorating neurological symptoms.

Moreover, application of ginger also inhibited the pathological conditions of ANDs by modulating cell death or cell survival signaling proteins.

The results suggested that ginger and its bioactive compounds may have therapeutic potential in ANDs.

Additionally, with an aim to reveal more information about ginger anti-ANDs activity, researchers investigated the neurotrophic effects in primary cultured rat cortical neurons and PC12 cells.

In vivo. ginger diet for 1 month in SAMP8 mice induced age-related learning and memory impairments, showed to reverse spatial learning and memory deficits by significantly increasing the numbers of Ki67-positive cells in the dentate gyrus.

Where Ki-67 protein is associated with cell proliferation or reduplication.

In PC12 cells, the ginger application also exhibited a neurotrophin-like activity as indicated by the induction of neurite sprouting.

Taken together, ginger may be considered a neuroprotective remedy against age-related neurological disorders, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Turmeric Inhibits #Diseases Associated with #ChronicLowGradeInflammation, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural response induced by the immune system in which the white blood cells in the first line of defense try to destroy the harmful pathogens before they can enter the body to multiply in the acute phase of infection
However, overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines in this phase can cause damage to the nearby healthy cells, leading to abnormal production of collagen ratio in the initiation of scars forming.

Most pathogens are stopped in the acute phase of infection, depending on the location and the size of the wound and tissue damage.

If the immune system can not kill off all invaded pathogens within a set period of time, it will compromise, leading to low-grade chronic inflammation with the persistent production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the affected area.

Long-term low-grade inflammation ultimately leads to tissue and organ damage, inducing a number of chronic illnesses, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Symptoms of low-grade chronic inflammation include body pain as in arthritis, constant fatigue, and insomnia as in cancer, depression, anxiety, and mood disorders due to pain. gastrointestinal complications like constipation, diarrhea, and acid reflux, unintended weight loss or gain depending on the infected tissues and organs.

According to statistics, chronic inflammatory diseases affect approximately 350 million people worldwide and nearly 43 million people in the United States, or almost 20% of the population. The prevalence of diseases associated with chronic inflammation is anticipated to increase persistently for the next 30 years, causing a financial burden on the economy and healthcare sector.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to demagogical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a natural compound for the treatment of diseases associated with chronic inflammation, including cancers, researchers examined the effects of turmeric through its bioactive components.

According to the review of previous studies, turmeric oil, present in turmeric, can enhance the bioavailability of curcumin.

In other words, essential oil isolated from turmeric in the form of curcumin-free turmeric (CFT) components is more effective for the treatment of chronic inflammatory disease compared to other extracts.

In examining the effect of ar-turmerone (ATM) and turmerones (TUR, a mixture of 5 sesquiterpenes including ATM) against disease associated with inflammation, researchers found that both CUR and ATM inhibited lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced expression of inducible forms of inflammation by exhibiting the production of free radicals and protein involved overexpression proinflammatory cytokines.

Furthermore, ATM prevented LPS-induced translocation of certain inflammatory genes.

In a colitis model, oral administration of TUR significantly protected the large bowel against 2% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced shortening of the large bowel by 52-58% and colon carcinogenesis.

Moreover, at a low dose, TUR markedly suppressed adenoma multiplicity by 73%, compared to the range of 63-69% of CUR.

Also, the combination of CUR and TUR at both low and high doses showed a complete abolition of tumor formation.

Based on the findings, Murakami A, the lead scientist in the chronic inflammatory disease team wrote, "We consider that its use in combination with CUR may become a powerful method for prevention of inflammation-associated colon carcinogenesis".

Taken altogether, turmeric in the form of essential oil, CUR, and TUR may be considered herbal remedies for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with chronic inflammation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

The Effects of #Yoga Intervention on Symptoms and Management of Multiple Sclerosis, According to Clinical Trials

Kyle J. Norton

Yoga therapy may have a therapeutic effect on reduced symptoms and improved quality of life in a patient with multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic condition of progressive disease affecting sheaths of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, with declining physical, emotional, and psychological symptoms such as numbness, impairment of speech and of muscular coordination, blurred vision, ........

Yoga, the ancient technique practice for harmonized external and internal body well-being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been well-known for people in the Western world and some parts of Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes research and supported by health advocates.

According to the study conducted by Oregon State University, yoga practice may be used as an integrated form of treatment and management of symptoms of MS.

Dr. Rogers KA, the led author said, "The purpose of this paper is to summarize the most relevant literature on exercise and mind-body modalities to treat MS symptoms and, more specifically, the benefits and the potential role of yoga as an alternative treatment of symptom management for individuals with MS".

Interestingly, in a study of a total of 60 Iranian women with multiple sclerosis (MS) placed in two equally divided control and case groups through the random selection to assess pre-and post-effects of yoga exercises on their physical activities and sexual satisfaction levels, researchers, through observation of returned questionnaire suggested that
1. Women who participated in yoga training and exercises for 3 months, expressed a significant statistical difference in physical activity
2. Sexual satisfaction levels
3. Women in the yoga group displayed improvement in physical ability.

Contrastively, in the searching of databases from Medline/PubMed, Scopus, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, PsycINFO, CAM-Quest, CAMbase, and IndMED through March 2014, for studies involved the efficacy and safety of yoga in patients with multiple sclerosis including health-related quality of life, fatigue, and/or mobility with mood, cognitive function, and safety were defined as secondary outcome measures, researchers at the University of Duisburg-Essen reported the following result, in 7 studies met the criteria and guidelines
1. Patients who participated in yoga class short term demonstrated a significantly improved effect in fatigue and mood change.
2. Short-term yoga innervation does not improve health-related quality of life, muscle function, or cognitive function
3. Yoga therapy is safe and was not associated with a serious adverse event in this group of patients

After taking into account other risk factors, Dr. Cramer H, the led author said, " since no methodological sound evidence was found, no recommendation can be made regarding yoga as a routine intervention for patients with multiple sclerosis. Yoga might be considered a treatment option for patients who are not adherent to recommended exercise regimens".

The information collected did not agree that yoga intervention short term can improve some symptoms and quality of life in patients with MS, therefore, a large sample size and cohort studies are necessary to clarify these contradictory results.

#Freeze-Dried #Bilberry Inhibits 15-30% of Intestinal Tumor Numbers in Vivos, According to Scientists

Kyle J. Norton

Intestinal cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the intestines.
Most cases of intestinal cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the internal tissue. At the advanced stage, after penetrating deep layers of the intestines, the cancer cells can travel a distance away from the intestine to infect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

Certain factors such as being overweight or obese, physical inactivity, and certain types of diet. smoking excessive alcohol drinking, family and personal history, and the increase in age, are associated with an increased risk of intestinal cancer.

Some researchers suggested that the increased incidence of intestinal cancer in the Western world may be associated with the promotion of a high-fat Western diet over the past many decades.

Dr. Manon D. Schulz, the lead scientists in the investigation of the effects of high-fat diet-mediated dysbiosis promotes intestinal carcinogenesis suggested, "Several aspects common to a Western lifestyle, including obesity and decreased physical activity, are known risks for gastrointestinal cancers. There is substantial evidence suggesting that diet profoundly affects the composition of the intestinal microbiota. Moreover, there is now unequivocal evidence linking dysbiosis to cancer development".

And, "Undoubtedly various factors contribute to the etiology of intestinal cancer, but there are compelling arguments to include high-fat diet (HFD) and composition of gut microbiota as key risk factors".

The results strongly suggested that the risk of intestinal cancer can be decreased by changing the diet pattern from the Western diet to a traditional diet with higher fruits and vegetables with a lower intake of red meat and saturated and trans fat and processed foods.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The herbal plant has been used as foods and herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment intestinal carcinogenesis examined the
intestinal carcinogenesis--relationship with tissue anthocyanin levels in an animal model.

Selected Apc(Min) mice ingested C3G or Mirtoselect at 0.03, 0.1, or 0.3% in the diet for 12 weeks, and intestinal adenomas were examined.

Where Mirtoselect, is an anthocyanin mixture from bilberry, and isolated cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) is the most abundant anthocyanin in the diet.

C3G and Mirtoselect at the highest doses decreased the adenoma numbers by 45% (p < 0.001) or 30% (p < 0.05), respectively, compared to controls.

According to the intestinal mucosa and urinary assays, anthocyanins were found at the analytical detection limit in the plasma and at quantifiable levels.

More precisely, the total anthocyanin levels in mice on C3G or Mirtoselect were 43 ng and 8.1 microg/g tissue, respectively, in the intestinal mucosa, and 7.2 and 12.3 microg/ml in the urine.
These results suggested that C3G and Mirtoselect in the Apc(Min) mouse processed a chemotherapeutic effect for the treatment of intestinal carcinogenesis.

Moreover, in order to reveal more information about berries' anti-intestinal tumorigenesis, researchers examined the different phenolic profiles of intestinal tumorigenesis in multiple intestinal neoplasia/+ mice.

Mice selected to the study were fed a high-fat AIN93-G diet (Con) or AIN93-G diets containing 10% (w:w) freeze-dried bilberry, lingonberry (LB), or cloudberry (CB) for 10 wk.

All 3 berries significantly inhibited the formation of intestinal adenomas as indicated by a 15-30% reduction in tumor numbers.

According to Western blotting and immunohistochemistry, all 3 berries inhibited the levels of decreased levels of proteins associated with cell cycle division.

Additionally, all 3 berries exerted early protection of the cells in the intestine against the alternation of cell DNA to facilitate the onset of the disease.

The findings strongly suggested the use of berries as chemopreventive components for the treatment of intestinal carcinogenesis.

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of
intestinal cancer, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter study.

#ManukaHoney in the Treatment of A Severe Atopic Contact Dermatitis Eczematous Reaction with no Side Effects, Researchers Reveal

Kyle J. Norton

In seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have found a herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of atopic dermatitis, according to studies.
Atopic dermatitis or eczema is an inflammatory condition associated with red and itchy skin.

Most cases of atopic dermatitis are found in children. However, adults may also get it too. Skin irritation is found more often in children compared to adults.

The causes of atopic dermatitis are unknown. Some researchers suggested that certain risk factors such as genetic preposition and abnormal function of the immune system and environmental conditions may be involved in the development of the disease.

Epidemiological studies suggested that most patients with chronic atopic dermatitis also have asthma and hay fever, particularly in allergies.

Some researchers suggested that atopic dermatitis is more common in people who live in the air pollution city.

Dr. Ahn K in the study of the role of air pollutants in atopic dermatitis, wrote, " Both indoor and outdoor air pollution, which are of increasing concern with urbanization, are well-known environmental risk factors for asthma, whereas there is relatively little evidence in AD".

And, " epidemiologic and experimental data on the role of air pollution in patients with AD. Recent evidence suggests that a variety of air pollutants, such as environmental tobacco smoke, volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, toluene, nitrogen dioxide, and particulate matter, act as risk factors for the development or aggravation of AD. These air pollutants probably induce oxidative stress in the skin, leading to skin barrier dysfunction or immune dysregulation".

The results clearly suggested the risk of atopic dermatitis increases with air pollutants.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of the healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Researchers in the course to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of dermatitis examined Manuka honey anti skin conditions and dermal injuries.

Injection of Manuka honey showed a significant potency in the treatment of a severe atopic contact dermatitis eczematous reaction with no side effects.

Furthermore, adult volunteers with bilateral atopic dermatitis (AD) were asked to apply MH on one site overnight for seven consecutive days and leave the contralateral site as untreated as possible.

There are no significant changes in the skin staphylococci observed after day 7, irrespective of honey treatment.

However, MH treatment showed significant inhibition of proinflammatory cytokines in a dose-dependent manner.

The application of MK also inhibited mast cell degranulation against the onset of atopic dermatitis (AD).

Dr. Alangari AA, the lead scientist said in the final report, "MH is potentially effective in the treatment of AD lesions based on both clinical and cellular studies through different mechanisms".

Taken altogether, Manuka honey may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD) with no side effects, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Cranberry Is Effective in Reducing the Incidence of #UrinaryTractInfections and Improving Quality of Life In Women, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

Urinary incontinence, a medical, psychological, social, economic, and hygienic problem, is a condition of loss of the bladder to control that can lead to mild or severe forms of involuntary leakage of urine.
Involuntary urine leakage or urinary incontinence is frequent among elderly women, adult women, and even adolescent women.

According to the statistics provided by Phoenix Physical Therapy, approximately 25 million adult Americans are living with some form of urinary incontinence of which 75-80% are women.

Believe it or not, about 17% of women and 16% of men over 18 years old have overactive bladder(OAB), and an estimated 12.2 million adults have urge incontinence.

All types of urinary incontinence have been found to have a negative impact on the quality of life and daily activity.

Epidemiologically, symptoms of urinary incontinence depend on the types of conditions, including
* Stress incontinence
Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) has a significant impact on the quality of life for many women with symptoms of leakage of urine during physical activity, such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercising, due to weakening the sphincter pelvic muscles, supporting the bladder and urethra.

* Urge incontinence
Urge incontinence, also known as overactive bladder, is a condition of involuntary loss of urine and intense urge to urine due to bladder spasms or contractions with no apparent reason.
Urge incontinence is also called overactive bladder.

* Overflow incontinence
Overflow incontinence is a condition of bladder's inability to empty completely and the normal flow of urine is blocked which can lead to constant urine dribbling.

* Mixed incontinence
Mixed incontinence is a condition of a combination of stress incontinence and urgency incontinence.

* Functional incontinence
Functional incontinence is a condition characterized by functioning difficulty that prevents one from urine normally as a result of mental or physical disabilities.

* Total incontinence
Total incontinence is a condition of total loss of urine control due to certain conditions such as bladder fistula, injury to the urethra, and ectopic ureter.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of urinary tract infection, researchers examined the effect of the efficacy of a concentrated cranberry liquid blend, UTI-STAT with Proantinox, in female patients with a history of recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTIs).

The study included the oral administration of 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 mL daily for 12 weeks to 28 women with a history of rUTIs <6 months. Only 23 women completed the study

According to the experimental results,
* The maximally tolerated dose of UTI-STAT was 75 mL/d, compared to the recommended dose of 60 mL/d.

* Only 2 (9.1%) out of 23 women report an rUTI, a markedly better rate than the historical data.

* Furthermore, at 12 weeks, the reduction in worry about rUTIs and increased QOL was a significant increase in the tested subjects measured by the Medical Outcomes Study short-form 36-item questionnaire.

* Moreover, the improvement of QOL was also confirmed by the lower American Urological Association Symptom Index.

* The cranberry liquid blend used in the study showed a good safety profile and tolerability in both pre-and postmenopausal women with a history of rUTIs.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The secondary endpoints demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing the incidence of rUTI and increasing QOL".

Taken altogether, cranberry liquid blend, UTI-STAT with Proantinox, may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of UTIs and rUTIs, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#YogaExercises Improve Physical Activity and Sexual Satisfaction Levels in Women, According to Clinical Trials

Kyle J. Norton

Yoga therapy may be considered as an integrated form of exercise in improving women's sexual dysfunction, a renowned institute study suggested.

Yoga, the ancient technique practice for harmonized external and internal body well-being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been well-known for people in the Western world and some parts in Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

According to the study of 40 females (age range 22-55 years, average age 34.7 +/- 8.49 years) enrolled in a yoga camp and given a standardized questionnaire named Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) before and after the 12 weeks session of yoga indicated that
1. Yoga intervention demonstrated substantially improved sexual function scores in all six domains of the FSFI assay (i.e., desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain).
2. Also in this group, The improvement was more in older women (age > 45 years) compared with younger women (age < 45 years)

Interestingly, in support of the above differentiation, researchers at The Catholic University of Korea conducted a randomized, controlled study of 41 women with metabolic syndrome (age 30-60 years) assigned to a 12-week yoga exercise group (n=20) or a wait-listed control group (n=21) suggested that
1. Yoga therapy displayed a significant improvement in arousal and lubrication compared to the control group.
2. Yoga also showed an improvement in systolic blood pressure yoga group than in the control group at the 12-week follow up

Dr. Kim HN, the lead author said, "Yoga may be an effective treatment for sexual dysfunction in women with metabolic syndrome as well as for metabolic risk factors".

Additionally, in the study of 60 Iranian women with multiple sclerosis (MS) placed in two equally divided control and case groups through the random selection to assess the pre-and post-effects of yoga exercises on their physical activities and sexual satisfaction levels, researchers at the joint study led by the Yasuj University of Medical Sciences found that
1. Women who participated in yoga class expressed a significant statistical difference in physical activity and sexual satisfaction levels compared to control
2. Yoga intervention also manifested improvement in physical ability

Taken together, Yoga intervention may be considered an integrated form of therapy used combined with standard treatment in improved sexual function in women, particularly in women with metabolic syndrome and multiple sclerosis.
