Scientists may have found a herbal medicine for the treatment of malaria with no side effects, according to studies.
Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease caused by parasitic protozoans.
People who are using the immune suppressive drug, having a weakened immune system, and being infected by the HIV virus are more likely to experience severe effects of the infection.
Some researchers suggested that Women who are pregnant are at an increased risk of malaria infection.
Dr. Ebako Ndip Takem the lead scientist in the concern of malaria in pregnancy, wrote, "Pregnant women have a higher risk of malaria compared to non-pregnant women"
And "Maternal risk factors for malaria in pregnancy (MiP) include low maternal age, low parity, and low gestational age. The main effects of MIP include maternal anemia, low birth weight (LBW), preterm delivery, and increased infant and maternal mortality".
The most common symptoms of the disease are shaking chills alternated with a high fever. profuse sweating. a headache, nausea. vomiting. abdominal pain and diarrhea.
In the Western world, malaria is almost nonexistent due to sanitation and mosquito spray. However, the disease is most prevalent in the countryside of the third-world countries due to living conditions and medication.
Due to the widespread of malaria in the third, the World Health Organization has set a goal for the prevention and treatment of malaria, including the develop products that will provide: efficacy against drug-resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum, potential for intermittent treatments (infants and pregnancy), safety in small children (less than 6 months old), safety in pregnancy, efficacy against Plasmodium vivax (including radical cure), efficacy against severe malaria, and transmission-blocking treatment.
Andrographis paniculata is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chicken pox, etc.
In the urgency of finding a natural anti-malaria herbal medicine with low cost for the treatment of malaria in the third world, researchers evaluated the effect of extracts of Andrographis paniculata (AP) and Hedyotis Corymbosa (HC).
Methanolic extracts of the plants were tested in vitro on Choloroquine sensitive (MRC-pf-20) and resistant (MRC-pf-303) strains of Plasmodium falciparum.
The 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) of AP (7.2 microg/ml) was found to be better compared to those of the HC at a dose of 10.8 microg/ml).
The combination of these two herbal drugs showed substantial enhancements to their anti-malarial activity.
Increased in vivo potency was also observed with the combination of plant extracts, compared to the individual extracts and curcumin.
In-depth analysis of the plant extracts, researchers found the plant extracts inhibit the ring stage of the parasite and did not show any in vivo toxicity, whether they are used in isolation or in combination.
Dr. Mishra K, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "Both these two plant extracts in combination with curcumin could be an effective, alternative source of herbal anti-malarial drugs".
Additionally, the investigation of the adulticidal and repellent activities of different solvent leaf extracts of Eclipta alba (E. alba) and Andrographis paniculata (A. paniculata) against malarial vector, Anopheles Stephensi (An. Stephensi) by comparing the adulticidal efficacy of the crude leaf extracts of E. alba and A. paniculata with five different solvents like benzene, hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol, and chloroform was tested against the five to six-day-old adult female mosquitoes of An. Stephensi.
Among the tested solvents the methanol extract showed a maximum efficacy compared to others. The LC(50) and LC(90) values of E. alba and A. paniculata against adults of An. Stephensi were 150.36, 130.19 ppm, and 285.22, 244.16 ppm.
According to the chi-square values, the methanol extract of A. paniculata produced maximum repellency against An. Stephensi.
Dr. Govindarajan M and colleagues in the research team said, "The crude extract ..... A. paniculata was an excellent potential for controlling An. Stephensi mosquitoes".
Taken altogether, herbal Andrographis may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of malaria in third-world countries where conventional medicine is expensive and hard to find with no side effects, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Andrographis Processes Anti-Fertility Activity in Male, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a natural contraceptive for the prevention of conception, according to studies.
Anti-fertility is an act with the intention to prevent, reduce or destroy fertility by using substances such as contraceptives, and herbal medicine in developing the world.
Contraceptives are conventional medicine that allows you to enjoy sex without the risk of getting pregnant. The contraceptive pill is the most common contraceptive agent used in the Western world.
Many women also use a contraceptive pill to treat irregular menstruation, painful or heavy periods, endometriosis, acne, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
The most common side effects of the contraceptive pill include gastrointestinal discomfort, intermenstrual spotting, breast tenderness, headaches, migraine, mood changes, missed periods, and vaginal discharge.
Some women using the pill also experience symptoms of decreased libido.
Dr. Davis AR, the lead scientist in the examination of the effect of OCs on sexual functioning, wrote, "In 30 original research studies. In the retrospective, uncontrolled studies (n = 17), it was found that most women reported an increase in libido during OC use. In the uncontrolled, prospective studies (n = 4), it was found that most women reported little change in libido during OC use.

In perspective and cross-sectional controlled studies (n = 4), women using OCs reported both increased and decreased libido compared to the non-OC users". and " In the most recent and well-conducted trial, a decrease in libido in OC users compared to placebo users was found".
These results strongly suggested that women may react differently to the use of the contraceptive pill, probably due to the based hormones in the body.
Andrographis paniculata also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia, swollen lymph nodes, leprosy, bronchitis, sore throats, tuberculosis, chicken pox, etc.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient with less cost and no side effects for male contraception, researchers at the Jamal Mohamed College examined the anti-fertility of dry leaf powder of A. paniculata in an animal model.
Dry leaf powder of A. paniculata fed orally to male albino rats, at a dose level of 20 mg powder per day for 60 days showed a significant effect on cessation of spermatogenesis, degenerative changes in the seminiferous tubules, regression of Leydig cells.
The antifertility activity also can be observed by the regressive and/or degenerative changes in the epididymis, seminal vesicle, ventral prostate, and coagulating gland.
Furthermore, injection of the powder also reduced the weight and fluid content of the accessory glands.
The results of the treatment also demonstrated the accumulation of glycogen and cholesterol in the testis, and increased activities of lactate dehydrogenase in the testis and alkaline phosphatase in the testis and ventral prostate.
The finding suggested that dry leaf powder of A. paniculata processes an antispermatogenic and/or antiandrogenic effect on the mice.
Moreover, in albino Wistar rats, researchers tested the anti-male fertility of andrographolide, a major bioactive compound found in herbal Andrographis extract.
The testosterone levels and fertility indices in treatment groups were found to be comparable with that of the control indicating no effect on fertility.
Total sperm count and sperm motility were not affected. The testes and epididymides did not show any gross or histopathological changes.
Administering 0, 20, 200, and 1000 mg/kg of body weight per day, for 65 days prior to mating and 21 days during mating.
The treated groups showed no signs of dose-dependent toxicity. The body weight gain and feed consumption were not affected at any of the dose levels.
The finding clearly suggested that the efficacy of herbal Andrographis in the induction of male infertility is not attributed to a single ingredient but all ingredients in the herbal medicine.
Taken together, herbal Andrographis may be considered a natural anti-male fertility or male contraceptive agent with no side effect, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#BilberryExtract Protects the Liver by Scavenging Free Radicals and Inhibiting Lipid Peroxidation, Researchers Say
Kyle J. Norton
According to studies, Bilberry may be used to prevent and treat liver diseases with no side effects.
Liver diseases are a medical condition in which the liver functions are reduced. In severe cases, liver diseases can induce liver failure.
The function of the liver is to filter out the blood from the digestive system before passing them to the cells and other parts of the body.
The largest organ also has a unique function in detoxifying the toxin in medications and drugs.
Furthermore, in the detoxification perspective, the liver also deactivates toxins by breaking down the toxins debris into a form that can be removed by the body.
Moreover, the organ performs the function of recycling old blood cells.
According to the statistics provided by the CDC and the American Liver Foundation, cirrhosis is a common liver disease that causes the death of over 31,000 people in the U.S. each year
The increase in age, gender, exposure to hepatitis viral occupation, being overweight or obese, high
blood cholesterol, hypertriglyceridemia, diabetes, and long-term use of certain medications such as
corticosteroids, prednisone, and hydrocortisone are some prevalent risk factors for liver diseases.
In the US, the hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is the leading cause of cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Dr. Vikas Khullar, the lead scientist in the examination of hepatitis C in risk of liver diseases wrote, "Despite recent advances in drugs for the treatment of hepatitis C, predictive models estimate the incidence of cirrhosis due to hepatitis C infection will continue to rise for the next two decades".
And, "There is currently an immense interest in the treatment of patients with fibrosis and early-stage cirrhosis as treatment can lead to decreased rates of decompensated cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and need for liver transplantation in these patients".
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrub in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The herbal plant has been used as foods and herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
Researchers to find a natural compound that processes liver protective effects investigated the bilberry extract against the 18 h restraint stress-induced serious liver damage in the animal models.
Restraint mice before injection of bilberry extract showed increased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and lower oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) values in plasma and liver.
Oral administration of bilberry extract, containing 42.04% anthocyanins) in mice at 50, 100, and 200 mg/(kg x day) for five days, remarkably decreased plasma ALT level to 17.23 +/- 2.49 U/L at the dose of 200 mg/(kg x day) and alleviated stress-induced liver damage.
Furthermore, the injection of the extract also bilberry increased antioxidant enzymes produced by the host such as glutathione (GSH) and vitamin C. It significantly decreased the oxidative stress marker MDA and levels of free radicals such as nitric oxide (NO) in the liver tissues.
The findings strongly suggested that bilberry extract protects the liver against restraint stress by both scavenging free radicals activity and lipid peroxidation inhibitory effect.
Moreover, in rats induced liver damage by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) was divided into four groups: Group I (0.9% NaCl-10days), Group II (bilberry extract, 75mg/kg-10days), Group III (0,9% NaCl-9days, and on the tenth day CCl4-2ml/kg), Group IV (bilberry extract, 75mg/kg-10days and on the tenth day CCl4-2ml/kg)., researchers found that* Injection of bilberry extract significantly decreases the activity of biochemical parameters associated with liver damage, such as AST, GGT, LDH, and ALT, levels of the pro-oxidative enzyme such as xanthine oxidase, and the level of lipid peroxidation in the liver in Group IV.
* Application of bilberry extract also resulted in an increase in the number of apoptotic liver damage cells by the activity of the apoptotic protein in the liver tissue.
Dr. Popović D, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders wrote at the end of the experiment, "Anthocyanins from bilberry extract have strong antioxidant properties and therefore can be considered as powerful hepatoprotectives in natural products".
Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a liver-protective functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver damage and diseases pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #Tomato's #Lycopene Inhibits #Hyperlipidemia Associated with the Onset of Neron Damage, According to Studies
Kyle J. Norton
Hyperlipidemia is a condition of abnormally high blood cholesterol in the bloodstream. The condition is also a member of the cluster of metabolic syndrome associated with the risk of type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Cholesterol is a waxy substance with a double-edged sword. On one hand, cholesterol is essential for the body to build strong cellular membranes, production of steroids hormones, and vitamin D and aided digestion, on another hand, it also causes a number of diseases if overexpressed in the blood.
Cholesterol is either produced by the liver or by the intake of fat.
There are 2 types of cholesterol in the body, low-density lipoprotein (LDL, bad cholesterol) and high-density lipoprotein (good cholesterol).
Where high-density lipoprotein (HDL, good cholesterol) plays a critical role to return the cholesterol to the liver for future use. Low levels of high-density or high levels of lipoproteins may result in blood cholesterol accumulating in the blood, leading to high blood cholesterol.
The optimized ratio of LDL/ HDL is any number that is less than 4.
Dr. Joan Carles Escola`-Gil, the lead scientist in the evaluation of the Western diet risk of high blood cholesterol wrote, ". The HFHC diet caused a significant increase in plasma cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and liver cholesterol and enhanced macrophage-derived [ 3 H]cholesterol flux to feces by 3- to 4-fold".
In other words, long-term intake of high-fat diet-induced hyperlipidemia.
Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, and belongs to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of hyperlipidemia, researchers examined the effect of tomato and grape pomace on the cholesterol (0.3%) diet of male Wistar rats produced a dose-dependent effect.
During the experiment, researchers found that 5% pomace of either grape or a combination showed no effects on reduced levels of hyperlipidemia.
However, 15% pomace of tomato and grape reduced serum cholesterol levels from 4.4 mmol/L to 2.5 mmol/L and 2.0 mmol/L respectively.
Interestingly, at the concentration of 15%, both tomato and grape pomace induced a redistribution of cholesterol in lipoproteins associated with an anti-atherogenic profile and reduced cholesterol concentration in very-low-density lipoprotein (VDL) (24% [tomato], 50% [grape]) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (3-fold, 3.6-fold).
Furthermore, both types of pomace enhanced the function of HDL in cholesterol transport by reducing the VLDL and LDL contribution.
Moreover, tomato and grape pomace reduced plasma levels of conjugated dienes involved in cholesterol oxidation in high levels by 30-50%
Additionally, injection also improved the antioxidant enzymes in the liver against lipid peroxidation.
In rats fed with hypercholesterolemic feed and treated with lycopene orally by gavage at the dose of 5, 25, 45, 65, 85, and 105, 125 mg/kg/bw-1/d-1, researchers found that injection of all doses of lycopene exerted a statistical significance in reduced the levels of cholesterol observed by inverse U shape at the 4 weeks of the experiment.
Furthermore, serum lycopene concentration was negatively correlated with the levels of serum TC, and LDL-C, particularly in the cerebral LDL-C.
Serum lycopene concentration was also found to have a positive correlation with the expression of Claudin-5 associated with brain microvascular endothelial cell proliferation, and migration. and the number of neurons in hippocampal CA1 and CA3.
In other words, serum lycopene showed a strong effect on the protection of neurons against hyperlipidemia in the brain that facilitates neuron damage.
Dr. Wang W, the lead scientist said, "These results suggested an inverse U-shape relation between dose and serum concentration of lycopene, and intermediate doses were most effective to protect cerebral vessels and neurons from being damaged by hyperlipidemia".
Taken altogether, tomatoes processed with high amounts of lycopene may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Prostate cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused by the growth of cells irregularly in the tissue of the prostate.
The prostate gland wrapped the around a tube (the urethra), is a gland of the male reproductive system found in front of the rectum and just below the bladder with a function that produces some of the semen that carries sperm.
Most cases of prostate cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate gland.
According to the statistic provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the third most common cancer among Canadian men and the 3rd leading cause of death from cancer in men in Canada.
In 2017, approximately 21,300 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer, accounting for 21% of all new cancer cases in men.
Futhermore, approximately 1 in 7 Canadian men will develop prostate cancer during their lifetime and 1 in 29 will die from it.
The most common symptoms of prostate cancer are
* Frequent urination
Patients urinate much time than usual for over periods of 1 year or 2, as a result of enlarged tumors that press against the bladder.
* Urgency
A desire to pass urinate more urgency as a result of the enlarged tumor pressing against the bladder.
* Dribbling after finished passing urine, urine continues to dribble as a result of the enlarged prostate tumor.
* Hesitancy
Having to wait a long time for the urine stream to start as a result of cancer has narrowed the urethra.
* Blood in the urine
Prostate cancer may have damaged any part of the urinary tract.
* Painful urination and ejaculation
As cancer has grown large, it interferes with the function of the urethra
* Blood in the semen
As cancer has grown large enough to damage the walls of the urethra.
* Lower back pain
As a result of the enlarged prostate tumor has pressed on spinal nerves.
* New-onset erectile dysfunction (impotence)
Prostate cancer has interfered with blood vessels, responding to the erection.
If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms persistently, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.
The 5 years of prostate cancer diagnosed at the localized stage are 100%.
Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,
Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.
With an aim to find a potential and natural compound for the treatment of prostate cancer(PCa), researchers investigated the association between prostate cancer and lycopene.
42 studies were included in the analysis including included 43 851 cases of PCa reported from 692 012 participants after searching the eligible studies published before 1 December 2016 and identified from PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library, both dietary intake and circulating concentrations of lycopene were significantly associated with reduced PCa risk.
Furthermore, lycopene showed a significant linearly dose-response in reduced risk of prostate cancer. In other words, for an additional 2 mg of lycopene consumed, the risk of prostate cancer is reduced by 1%.
Compared to dietary lycopene, an additional 10 μgdl-1 of circulating lycopene in the blood of the linear and nonlinear models decreased the PCa risk by 3.5 to 3.6%.
Observation of lycopene effect in advanced PCa, the secondary metabolite also demonstrated a trend for protection against PCa aggressiveness.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote," Our data demonstrate that higher dietary and circulating lycopene concentrations are inversely associated with PCa risk. This was accompanied by dose-response relationships for dietary and circulating lycopene".
According to another meta-analysis conducted by the Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University in the searching, eligible studies published in English up to April 10, 2014, from Pubmed, ScienceDirect Online, Wiley online library databases, and hand searching,
* Higher lycopene consumption significantly lowered PCa risk.
* Higher lycopene consumption was linearly associated with a reduced risk of PCa and higher circulating lycopene levels significantly reduced the risk of PCa.
* However, the concentration of circulating lycopene between 2.17 and 85 μg/dL was linearly inversed with PCa risk compared to no linear association of any doses that are >85 μg/dL.
Collectively, researchers wrote, "our novel data demonstrated that higher lycopene consumption/circulating concentration is associated with a lower risk of PCa".
Taken altogether, lycopene may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Beetroot #Extract Enhances the Effects of Chemodrugs Doxorubicin (Adriamycin) on Prostate and Breast Cancer, Researchers Find
By Kyle J. Norton
Chemotherapy is an action in which a substance including drugs was used to treat any disease, particularly, cancer.
In cancers, chemotherapy is a treatment to kill or damage cancer cells in a specific area. Besides chemotherapy, the most common treatment of cancer in conventional medicine are surgery and radiation, depending on the severity of the condition.
The aim of chemotherapy is to cure or control the progression of cancer and improve the quality of life of patients by reducing symptoms.
In other words, chemotherapy is effective to shrink a tumor before surgery or kill the remaining cancer cells that cannot completely be removed by radiation and surgery.
Depending on the type and stage and grade of cancer, treatment may be a single chemo drug or several drugs.
Chemotherapy has been found to induce serious side effects, including fatigue. hair loss, easy bruising and bleeding, infection, anemia, nausea and vomiting, and constipation due to its nature to kill cells (cancer and healthy cells) indiscriminatingly.
Betanin is phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.
Researchers with an aim to discover a natural compound or whole food which enhances chemotherapy in the treatment of cancer examined the effects of betanin (BET) co-administration with potent anticancer drugs e.g. doxorubicin (DOX) in reducing the side effects.
The study included the introduction of a new pH-responsive nanocarrier via decoration of gelatin nanoparticles (GNPs) by (methoxy poly (ethylene glycol)-poly ((2-dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate-co-itaconic acid) (PGNPs) loaded with 20.5 % of DOX and 16.25of BET that overcomes the restrictions of BET and provides the synergistic effect of DOX@BET.
At adjusting, the pH of the environment, the stimulated release of DOX and BET from PGNPs showed a significant synergistic effect of DOX@BET not only inhibited the tested cancer cell line MCF-7 but also the side effect caused by DOX.
In other words, betanin enhanced chemo drug efficacy and inhibited the treatment of drug toxicity.
Based on the findings, Dr. Amjadi S, the lead scientist said, "(The synergistic effect of DOX@BET may contribute to the) developed smart nanocarrier will be a hopeful nanocarrier for cancer therapy".
In order to find out more information about the enhanced chemotherapy researchers investigated the activity of an extract of red beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.), the FDA-approved red food color E162 with an anticancer drug, doxorubicin (adriamycin) in human prostate cancer cells (PC-3) and estrogen receptor-positive human breast cancer cells (MCF-7).
Individual treatment of doxorubicin and the beetroot extract exhibited a cytotoxic effect in the two tested cancer cell lines in a dose-dependent manner.
The cytotoxicity induced by beetroot extract at the concentration of 29 µg/ml was significantly lower compared to doxorubicin.
Beetroot extract inhibited the cancer proliferation at a trend of gradual decrease of the growth rate of the PC-3 cells (3.7% in 3 days vs. 12.5% in 7 days) compared to doxorubicin completely inhibited the growth of the PC-3 cells in three days at the same concentration level.
In the additional differentiation of the results, researchers found that the cytotoxicity exhibited by the red beetroot extract is attributed to the effects of betanin, the major betacyanin constituent.
Based on the findings, betanin co-administration with chemo drug not only have a profound effect in enhancing the function of the anti-cancer drug but also reduce the side effect induced by conventional medicine.
Taken together, betanin used alone or combined with other chemo drugs may be considered medicine for the treatment of cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of betanin in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Sinigrin Improves Metabolic Parameters through Multi-Directions Including the Liver, Pancreas, and Intestine, Studies Show
Kyle J. Norton
Metabolic parameters are a measurable factor used for the prediction of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
Metabolic factors including hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and hyperkalemia are important considerations used for the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes and nephropathy.
Where hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and hyperkalemia are conditions of abnormally high levels of sugar, cholesterol, and potassium level in the bloodstream, respectively.
In other words, the levels of lipid and carbohydrate homeostasis, esterified and total cholesterol, free fatty acids, and triacylglycerols are considered measurable factors for the onset and treatment of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
For example, a retrospective study used a national electronic database to examine the metabolic parameter of Malay patients with type 2 diabetes, researchers in the comparison of some of the metabolic parameters traced before, during, and after Ramadan, found that systolic blood pressure, low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides showed insignificant change in all participants, except blood glucose which was most affected during Ramadan.
Knowing the parameters that affect the patients has been found to enhance the management and treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes.
Researchers seeking a potential natural compound for the improvement of metabolic parameters examined the sinigrin (SIN) and allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) preventive and medicinal effects.
The study included the injection of glucosinolate sinigrin 50 μmol/kg b. w./day and its degradation product allyl isothiocyanate 25 μmol/kg b. w./day and 50 μmol/kg b. w./day in an animal rat model in vivo after their single (4 h) and 2 weeks oral administration.
AITC alone after 4 h of its ingestion caused liver triacylglycerols increment at both doses and glycemia only at the higher dose.
Interestingly, multiple SIN treatments showed its putative bioconversion into AITC.
SIN and AITC multiple administration strongly disturbed lipid and carbohydrate homeostasis, increasing esterified and total cholesterol, and free fatty acids and lowering triacylglycerols in the blood serum.
Additionally, AITC at both doses elevated insulinemia and liver glycogen enhancement.
The finding strongly suggested that SIN and AITC improve metabolic parameters through multi-directions including the liver, pancreas, and intestine.
Dr. Okulicz M, the lead scientist said, "This effect is potentiated with a time of action of the examined compounds, whose influence is rather adverse for the majority of metabolic pathways (liver steatosis at the short duration and insulinemia, cholesterolemia at long time treatment)".
Taken altogether, sinigrin a bioactive ingredient in cruciferous vegetables may be used to improve metabolic factors against the onset of metabolic syndrome, pending to the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.
However, intake of bioactive in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care, as liver toxicity may be induced if overdosed.
