#Turmeric Inhibits ProinflammatoryCytokines Associated with the Onset of #Crohnsdisease, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

Crohn's disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease caused by inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract.

The exact cause of Crohn's disease is not identified. However, some researchers suggested that people with a compromised immune system and genetic preposition are prone to the disease onset compared to people who do not

The most common symptoms of Crohn's disease are abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, and malnutrition.

If you are experiencing symptoms of severe abdominal pain accompanied by blood in the stool and persistent diarrhea, please check with your doctor right way.

Risk factors of Crohn's disease include aging, family and person history, ethnicity, smoking, and long-term use of Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications.
.
Out of many risk factors that cause the onset of the condition, some researchers suggested that your risk of Crohn's disease is depending on where you live.

Dr. Pascal Michel wrote, "Crohn's disease (CD) is clinically expressed as a chronic affection of the gastrointestinal tract currently known to have a multifactorial etiology involving a complex pathophysiological host response modulated by genetic susceptibilities, demographic determinants, and environmental factors. With more than 20 cases per 100,000 person-years, the province of Quebec, Canada is among regions of the world with the highest reported occurrence of CD in relation to other places where comparable estimates are available".

And, "These findings suggest that known populational and regional factors derived through census information only explain a limited fraction of the geographical variation of CD incidence and lead to speculate that the effects of these factors may be incompletely captured (imperfect construction of proxy variables) or that other important factors remain unmeasured".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, and wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of Crohn's disease (CD), researchers at the Grand Valley State University compared the effects of Remicade to curcumin to treat the condition.

The review study includes a search in electronic databases (ProQuest Medical Library, CINAHL Complete, and PUBMED) to locate and identify articles to meet a predetermined set of inclusion criteria, including articles published after 2007 in human participants 18 years or older.

Compared to Remicade in reducing TNF-a, the protein associated with inflammation in adults with CD, curcumin induced a 55 points mean reduction in the Crohn's Disease Activity Index, reduced the expression of IL-1 and levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), associated with elevated levels of proinflammatory cytokines in the colon, particularly in the reduced levels of TNF-a and PPMTase involved in the improvement of colorectal cancer outcomes.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "...Preliminary data would suggest using both would reduce LOR. Curcumin, even by itself, was found to be a cheap and safe way to reduce CD symptoms and inflammatory markers"

Furthermore, according to the study conducted by the Medical School of Marília in the search for articles associating curcuminoids and CD and UC on the database of MEDLINE-PubMed, curcumin demonstrated an intestinal protective effect on reducing oxidative stress and inhibiting the migration of neutrophils and inducible nitric oxide synthase in the intestine.

Moreover, curcumin also improved micro and macroscopic lesions in the gut, prevented apoptosis of intestinal cells, and induced the restoration of immune reaction.

Dr. Cunha Neto F, after taking into account co and confounders wrote, "The use of curcumin is cheap, efficient and associated with no side effects, and may become an alternative to the IBD treatment".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed with a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of Crohn's disease (CD), pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Bromelains Reduce Swelling, Pain, Trismus, and Quality of Life (QOL) After Surgical Removal of Impacted Lower Third Molars, Researchers Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Pain and swelling are a natural response of the immune and nervous systems after a wound or injury by inducing the production of proinflammatory cytokines.

In acute infection, after sensing a wound and injury to the body, the immune first lines of white blood cell defense stimulate the production of blood palette to the infected area with an aim to cover the wound or injury and the inflammatory cytokines to kill off organisms trying to enter the body through the opening.

Please note that overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines in this phase has been found to cause abnormal healing with the formation of scars.

The acute phase of infection arrives and leaves quickly as it is resolved quickly by the body.

However, chronic infection is a result of an immune system that can not kill off all infectious organisms in the acute phase of infection, leading to chronic inflammation that lasts a long time, such as months or years.

Swelling and pain in the joints are one of the most common symptoms in patients with arthritis, particularly in rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

However, some cases of swelling accompanied by symptoms that do not associate with the injury such as fatigue, loss of appetite, and weight gain may be an indication of cancer, heart, liver, or kidney disease.

If you experience some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

In most cases, pain and swelling of the injury and wound can be healed by themselves without interfering or injection of counter-pain medication, depending on the size of the opening.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to find potential and natural compounds for the treatment of pain and swelling with no side effects, researchers evaluated the effect of bromelain after the surgical removal of third molars.

The prospective randomized clinical study included 40 patients requiring surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molars.

After the surgery, according to the tested assays, bromelain showed a significant effect in reducing swelling and pain in 28 out of a total of 40 patients.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Bromelain can be used as a successful oral enzyme therapy for oral surgery patients, especially after removal of impacted third molars".

In order to reveal more information about bromelain anti-pain and swelling activity the team at the University of Mosul College of Dentistry compared the effect of oral bromelain (4 × 250 mg) versus oral diclofenac sodium (4 × 25 mg) on pain, swelling, trismus, and quality of life (QOL) after surgical removal of impacted lower third molars.

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study included 45 patients requiring extraction under local anesthesia of a single partial bony impacted mandibular third molar randomly divided into 1 of 3 groups: bromelain, diclofenac, and placebo.

According to the results of the analysis, bromelain, and diclofenac groups both showed a significant and similar reduction in pain compared with the placebo group at all intervals.

Both bromelain and diclofenac treatment groups also showed a significant difference in the effect on QOL in most subscales and total scores.

Dr. the lead scientist said, "The results of our study have shown that oral bromelain is an effective therapy to improve the QOL after surgical removal of impacted lower third molars, with an effect on the postoperative sequelae comparable to that of preemptive diclofenac sodium".

Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered a supplement for the treatment of pain and swelling, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Ginger Extract Processes Anti-#PolycysticOvarianSyndrome (PCOS) Property Through its Antioxidant Activities, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a medical condition characterized by undeveloped follicles clumping on the ovaries that interfere with the function of the normal ovaries resulting in enlarged ovaries, leading to a hormonal disorder that affects between 6 to 10% of women.

According to the statistics, in the US, about 6 to 10% of women suffered from PCOS.
The causes of PCOS are not identified. However, some researchers suggested that genetic preposition may play a critical role in facilitating hormone levels and insulin resistance.

Some researchers in the comparison of 80% PCOS prevalent rate in overweight and obesity in women in the US and a much lower prevalent rate outside the US suggested that the prevalence and severity of obesity are lower in women with PCOS outside the U.S. probably associated with some environmental factors, such as lifestyle, contribute to the development of obesity in PCOS that do not exist in other counties.

Women with PCOS due to hormonal imbalance are associated with a higher risk of infertility.

As of today, the treatment of PCOS is a medication used mostly to balance the hormones and relieve some of the symptoms, such as acne and weight gain.

The most common symptoms are menstrually related such as irregular periods, no periods and painful periods, insulin resistance, obesity, acne, and male pattern hair growth.

If you experience some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers in the urgency to find a natural compound for the treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), compared the effectiveness of ginger with clomiphene on sexual hormones such as Luteinizing hormone (LH), Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), estrogen and progesterone in order to treat PCOS effectively with fewer side effects.

The study included 63 adult female rats (170-200 gr) divided randomly into 9 groups as control (not received any interventional substance for 60 and 89 days), sham (were given distilled water and ethyl alcohol intraperitoneally daily for 60 and 89 days), and 7 experimental groups receiving estradiol valerate (PCOS inducing agent, intramuscular) alone and with 100 mg/kg clomiphene or different doses of ginger extract (175 and 350 mg/kg) orally daily for 60 and 89 days.

Clomiphene and ginger extract groups demonstrated significant improvement in hormonal secretion compared to the PCOS-induced group.

Furthermore, clomiphene, compared with the lower dose of ginger extract, had a better-improving effect on balancing sexual hormones in PCOS.

Moreover, ginger extract at higher doses has better effects on improving PCOS.

Based on the finding, researchers wrote in the final report, "The long-term administration of clomiphene citrate has some side effects, the use of ginger as a herbal medicine without any side effects at high doses can be an effective and good alternative in improving PCOS".

In order to reveal more information about ginger anti-PCOS properties, scientists evaluated the effects of 6-gingerol on the biochemical parameters and ovarian histological improvements in estradiol valerate (EV) induced PCOS rats.

In the study, 36 female Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups: control, which received a normal diet, PCOS control, which received a 4 mg/kg EV injection for 28 days and two experimental groups, which received an EV injection for 28 days and followed by 6-gingerol (200 μg/kg and 400 μg/kg) for 14 days.

Before injection of 6-gingerol, administration of EV led to increased body and ovarian weights, abnormality in serum sex steroid profile, decreasing antioxidant activity, and stimulating the production of COX-2 gene in the expression of inflammation caused by oxidative stress.

Administration of 6-gingerol particularly the 400 μg/kg dose, markedly attenuated these alterations.

The bioactive compound not only inhibited symptoms of PCOS rats by decreasing the expression of COX-2 but also restored biochemical parameters to normal and decreased cysts in the ovaries.

Taken together, ginger processed with a high amount of bioactive compounds may be considered a functional alternative for the prevention and treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

The Effects of #Coffee and #CoffeeCaffeine on Complexity of Cognitive Performance, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Epidemiological studies do not agree that regular coffee consumption may associate to improve cognitive function, a joint study led by the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais suggested.
Cognitive function is a cerebral activity in acquired knowledge, including all means and mechanisms of acquiring information.

Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

In a cohort of 14,563 public service workers (35-74 years old) to examine the coffee consumption habits and cognitive function using standardized neuropsychological test, researchers at the above institutes filed the following results
1. Elderly drinking 2-3 cups/day, showed a significant improvement in the mean words remembered on learning, recall, and word recognition in compared to never/almost never groups.

2. And those drinking more than 3 cups a day exhibited increased mean words pronounced, according to the semantic verbal fluency test in compared to the same groups.

Dr. Araújo LF, the lead author said, "Coffee consumption might be slightly beneficial to memory in elderly but lacks a dose-response relationship".

Furthermore, in 2,914 participants from the population-based Rotterdam Study (mean age: 59.3±7.2 years, 55% females) to assess coffee consumption, performed brain MRI, and cognition at baseline, researchers found that
1. Higher coffee consumption showed a lower prevalence of lacunar infarcts [odds ratio per cup increase: 0.88 (95% CI:0.79;0.98)]involved development of stroke, and smaller hippocampal volume in the expression of memory ability.

2. Coffee consumption promoted better performance on the Letter-Digit Substitution Task
3. But do not improve on the 15-Word Learning test delayed recall.

Dr. Araújo LF, again said, "...(there is a) complex associations between coffee consumption, brain structure, and cognition. Higher coffee consumption was cross-sectionally associated with a lower occurrence of lacunar infarcts and better executive function.

Interestingly, according to the study of coffee consumption and other baseline variables of 2606 middle-aged Finnish twins assessed in 1975 and 1981 by postal questionnaires, with after the median follow-up of 28 y, coffee consumption was not an independent predictor of cognitive performance in old age, according to the linear regression analysis.

The study also insisted that coffee drinking did not affect the risk of mild cognitive impairment or dementia, but expressed an inconsistent cognitive score.

Taking all together, coffee and coffee caffeine can only improve the performance of some cognitive function but not at a whole, particularly in the older population.

#Herbal #Ginger Extract Suppresses the Immune Responses Associated with the Onset of #Asthma, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Asthma is a medical and chronic condition characterized by the long-term inflammation of the airways of the lungs.
Besides episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath, patients with asthma also experience symptoms of reversible airflow obstruction and bronchospasm.

Asthma attack in most cases is triggered by exposure to various irritants and substances that trigger allergies (allergens). However, genetic preposition and family history are also found in patients with asthma.

Asthma in some cases can interfere with daily activities and may lead to a life-threatening asthma attack. Treatment of asthma is to reduce the frequent episode and severity of the attacks.

According to the statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the US, 1 in 13 people have asthma. In other words, over 26 million Americans have asthma and half of that is children.

Believe it or not, African-Americans in the U.S. die from asthma at a higher rate than people of other races or ethnicities.

Some researchers suggested that people who follow the Western diet pattern are at a substantially higher risk of asthma.

Dr. Laurent Guilleminault, the lead scientist said, "Asthma is a chronic respiratory disorder which is associated with airway inflammation. Environmental factors, in association with genetic susceptibility, play a critical role in asthma pathophysiology" and "some dietary patterns, such as the Western diet, which includes a high intake of refined grains, processed and red meats, and desserts, have pro-inflammatory effects".

With an aim to find a natural compound or whole food for the treatment of asthma, researchers investigated the immunosuppressive activity of ginger by using the mouse model of ovalbumin-induced allergic asthma.

Selected mice were treated with ethanol extract (500 mg/kg) and aqueous extract (720 mg/kg) of rhizomes, and methylprednisolone (5 mg/kg) which was initiated 1 week after the second sensitization with ovalbumin and continued for 7 days.

Treated mice showed a significant reduction in goblet cell hyperplasia, infiltration of inflammatory cells in airways, and edema with vascular congestion associated with asthma attacks.

Both ginger ethanol and aqueous extracts exerted a strong effect in modulating the immune response observed by a significant reduction of a total and differential count of eosinophils and neutrophils.

Ginger efficacy in the modulation of immune over-response by inhibiting Th2 accompanied by the decrease of levels of proinflammatory cytokines and total serum IgE levels.

Dr. Khan AM, the lead scientist said, "Our study validated the traditional use of ginger in respiratory disorders and suggests that ginger reduces allergic airway inflammation, possibly by the suppression of Th2-mediated immune response".

In order to reveal more information about ginger's anti-asthmatic properties, researchers evaluated ginger's inflammatory properties in a mouse model.

In vivo, ginger can exert the functions in the inhibition of Th2-mediated pulmonary inflammation observed by reducing levels of proinflammatory and IL-4, IL-5, and IgE expressions.

Similar to the aforementioned study, intraperitoneal injections of the extract on ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized mice resulted in a marked decrease in the recruitment of eosinophils to the lungs.

The efficacy of ginger extract that suppressed eosinophilia in a mouse model of inflammation was attributed to [6]-gingerol, a major constituent of ginger.

Dr. Ahui ML, the lead scientist, after taking other factors into account wrote in the final report, "This is the first evidence that ginger can suppress Th2-mediated immune responses and might thus provide a possible therapeutic application in allergic asthma".

Taken together, ginger-processed bioactive compound 6-gingerol may be considered a functional alternative for the treatment of asthma and asthmatic attacks, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Yoga Exercises Improve the Outcome and Reduce Complications of High-Risk Pregnancy , Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

According to the literature published online in PubMed, Yoga may be used as an adjunct therapy in reducing the risk of a high-risk pregnancy.

Women who are classified as high-risk pregnancies are more likely to encounter more health problems in themselves and their babies during pregnancy, birth, or after delivery.

Age, first-time pregnancy, chronic conditions, preexisted medical conditions, and drug usage.... are all associated with increased risk to the health problems of both mother and baby and pregnancy outcome, particularly for women with a previous history of pregnancy risk.

According to the study sixty-eight pregnant women assigned to the yoga group (n=30) received standard care plus one-hour yoga sessions, three times a week, from the 12th to the 28th week of gestation. and control group (n=38) received standard care plus conventional antenatal exercises (walking) during the same period, researchers found that
1. Yoga participants showed fewer pregnancy-induced preeclampsia, gestational diabetes (GDM), and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) cases compared to control
2. The yoga group also expressed significantly fewer Small Gestational Age (SGA) babies and newborns with low APGAR scores were born in the yoga group

Dr. Rakhshani A, the led author, after examining the results indicated that " yoga can potentially be an effective therapy in reducing hypertensive related complications of pregnancy and improving fetal outcomes".

Psychologically, yoga practice of breath and meditation have a significant effect in ameliorating maternal stress and distress and improving heart rate by induced calming, reduced tension and promoted relaxation which is associated with a reduced risk of preeclampsia, gestational diabetes (GDM), and some of the complications in high-risk pregnancy.

Additionally, according to Dr, Rondó PH, and colleagues, yoga exercised attenuated maternal psychological stress also demonstrated a strong implication in decreased expression of low birth weight (LBW), prematurity, and intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) in high-risk pregnancy women at a gestational age (GA) lower than 16 weeks, from 20 to 26 weeks and from 30 to 36 weeks.
More importantly, in the letter responding to the above study, Dr. Siddharudha Shivalli wrote, "Authors have used outcome measures such as fetal biparietal diameter, head circumference, abdominal circumference, femur length, and estimated fetal weight (Table 3). However, maternal hemoglobin, anemia status, physical activity, dietary, and iron-folate/other supplement intake have an effect on all these fetal parameters [2]. These are the potential confounders in this study and they must have been addressed" and "Nonetheless, this study highlights the need for a higher level of evidence to assess the effect of yoga on maternal and fetal outcomes".

Further to demonstrate the yoga effect in decreasing risk of women with high-risk pregnancy, researchers at the S-VYASA University, conducted a study that included 68 pregnant women (38 in the control group with standard antenatal care and 30 in the YT group) with 27.2 (5.2) years of mean age recruited from the outpatient services of medical college and hospital in Bangalore, South India, reported the following results
1. Yoga therapy reduced significant stress levels measured by stress assay at the second follow-up (28(th) week of pregnancy) in compared to the control group
2. Yoga participants reported significantly fewer pregnancy discomfort, such as nausea and sometimes vomiting in the first trimester, body aches, and tightening or cramping in the uterus, during late pregnancy.

After taking into account other confounders, researchers suggested that yoga therapy may be as secondary intervention combined with standard treatment at a reduced level in high-risk pregnant women.

Dr. CS Deshpande, the led author said, " practicing YT during high-risk pregnancy is not only a cost-effective option but also a feasible and safe option. Additional well-designed studies are needed before a strong recommendation can be made".

Taking it all together, there is no doubt that yoga intervention may be considered as an adjunct in combination with standard treatment in high-risk pregnancies for a better outcome.

#Herbal #Ginger Inhibits #DiabeticRetinopathy By Deactivating Proteins in the Production of ProinflammatoryCytokines and Apoptosis in the Retinas

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found natural ingredients for the treatment of retinal damage with no side effects, according to studies.
The retina is a thin layer of tissue that lines the inside of the back of the eye with the function to convert light into neural signals to the brain for visual recognition.

Retinal damage is a condition characterized by damage to the thin layer of tissue of the retina caused by many underlying problems.

Although it is not common, retinal damage, however, is a leading cause of macular degeneration in older adults.

The late stage of retinal damage has been associated with vision impairment and reduced quality of life in patients.

Macular degeneration is a medical condition caused by the deterioration of the small central portion of the retina, known as the macula inducing gradually reduced vision, a leading cause of severe, irreversible vision loss in people over age 60.

According to the statistic, macular degeneration affects more than 1.75 million aging population in the United States.

The causes of retinal damage can be various. However, some researchers suggested certain conditions associated with eye vision may foretell the damage to the retina, including
* Dim vision, the vision is longer and as bright as before.
* Distorted and double vision
* Worsen floating webs compared to before
* Flashing lights
* Halo from the light sources
* Block some of the vision

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure that you check with your doctor for preventive measures.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of retinal damage with no side effects compared to chemo medication examined the anti-lung cancer of bioactive compounds isolated from ginger.

In seeking a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of retinal damage, researchers examined the synergistic effect of purple waxy corn and ginger (PWCG) against diabetic eye complications.

The study included diabetic rats induced by streptozotocin, an antibiotic with blood glucose levels >250 mg·dL(-1) orally given the extract at doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg·BW(-1) for 10 weeks.

According to the tested assays, all doses of PWCG decreased lens opacity, MDA, the levels of retinal oxidative stress, and augmented reality (AR) which has a unique optical design specially engineered for measuring near-eye displays (NEDs), in the lens of diabetic rats.

Injection of the extract also improved the antioxidant profile which was decreased due to the administration of streptozotocin in the diabetic rats.

Additional observation showed that the extract exerts anti retinopathy property by the increased number of neurons in the ganglion cell layer and thickness of the total retina and retinal nuclear layer in diabetic rats.

Dr. Thiraphatthanavong P, the lead scientist said, " PWCG is the potential functional food to protect against diabetic cataracts and retinopathy".

Furthermore, in order to reveal more information about ginger anti-diabetic retinopathy (DR) activity, researchers analyzed the protective effect of zerumbone, a monocyclic sesquiterpene compound found in ginger, against DR.

The study included streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats treated with ZER (40 mg/kg) once a day orally for 8 weeks.

During the study, researchers found that ZER administration significantly (p < 0.05) lowers the levels of plasma glucose (32.5% ± 5.7% lower) and glycosylated hemoglobin (29.2% ± 3.4% lower) in STZ-diabetic rats.

ZER also reversed the disarrangement and reduction in the thickness of retinal layers in diabetic rats.

Particularly, ZER also inhibited the elevated levels of advanced glycosylated end products (AGEs) and the higher levels of the receptors for AGEs (RAGE) involving retinal damage in diabetic rats.

Moreover, the efficacy of ginger that protects against diabetic retinopathy was associated with the deactivation of the proteins in stimulating the production of proinflammatory cytokines and apoptosis in the retinas of STZ-diabetic rats.

Taken together, ginger processed with a high amount of bioactive compounds may be considered a functional alternative for the prevention and treatment of retinal damage, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.
