#Yoga Exercises Reduce the Symptoms and Improve the Quality of Life in Patients with #BronchialAsthma

Kyle J. Norton

People with bronchial asthma who participated in yoga classes are likely to experience lower symptoms intensity and frequency, some researchers suggested.

Yoga, the ancient practice for harmonized external and internal body well beings, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been best known to people in the Western world and some parts of Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes research and supported by health advocates.

According to the study to evaluate a one-month in-patient naturopathy and yoga program effects for patients with asthma with retrospective data of 159 bronchial asthma patients, yoga participants showed a significant increase in the Forced Vital Capacity and Forced Expiratory Volume from the date of admission up to 6th-month post-Bonferroni correction, observed by the paired-sample t-test results.

Compared to the beginning of the invention, the yoga group also expressed significant increase from admission to the date of discharge according to the Maximum voluntary ventilation assay

Furthermore, the Peak Expiratory Flow Rate also significantly increased from admission until the 36th month of follow-up, observed through post-Bonferroni correction.

These illustrations demonstrated a strong effect of yoga in reducing overall symptoms by improving physical lung function. Because of these traumatic results, Dr. Rao YC,, the led authors author suggested that yoga combined with naturopathy may be considered as secondary management of bronchial asthma.

Indeed, yoga breathing and yoga poses such as Bridge, Cobra, Wheel, and Upward-Facing Dog open and stretch the chest, stimulating the blood circulation to the lung area to improve lung function and strengthen the lung muscles, thus increasing lung diffusion capacity.

Furthermore, yoga breath and retention with "inhale air into the abdomen and feel it expands into the rib cage, into the chest and collar bone then exhale from the chest, rib cage, and lastly from the abdomen slowly", according to some yogic instructors can increase oxygen absorption and maximize CO2 expelling to prevent blocking of space for air circulation, thus cultivating greater lung capacity in the absorption of prana in precipitation of maximized metabolic function of lung cells and reduced symptoms of intensity in patients with bronchial asthma.

Interestingly, German scientists in following up to the above study of long-term effect of yoga breathing exercises and yoga intervention in patients with bronchial asthma also found that
yoga interventions demonstrated significant amelioration of psychological symptoms such as depression and mood disorder and induced a significant improvement of lung function parameters, observed by the Forced expiratory volume (FEV) assay.

According to the review published in the March 2013 issue of the “Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.” the Yoga postures (asanas) and breathing (pranayama) showed to improve lung capacity in healthy adults averaging 90 minutes per day over a 10-week period in yoga participation.

In the concerns of yoga classes may have any effect on enhanced quality of life-related to the mental state of patients with bronchial asthma, researchers conducted a randomized trial with 120 non-smoking male and female patients of asthma in the age group of 17-50 years randomly assigned into two groups i.e. Group A (Yoga group, with patients, practiced yoga breathing exercises for 8 weeks) and Group B (control group), after assessing asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (AQLQ) and diary record returned from patients, and indicated that yoga group expressed a statistically and gradually significant improvement in "symptoms", "activities" and "environmental" domains of AQLQ during the periods, especially in a reduction in daily number and severity of attacks compared to control.

The finding showed that yoga breathing exercises used adjunctively with standard pharmacological treatment significantly improved quality of life and decreased symptom frequency in patients with bronchial asthma.

#Herbal #Turmeric Inhibits Cancers Throught Its #Cytotoxic, and Antioxidant Properties, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Cytotoxicity is an action that kills cancer cells by inducing toxins. Cytotoxicity to cancer cells has been used in chemotherapy to kill cancer cells but it also exerts a negative impact on the nearby healthy cells.

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by cell growth irregularly in the tissue of specific organs. At the advanced stage, the most malignant cancer cell can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis through blood and fluid circulation.
Conventionally, chemotherapy depending on the types of drugs may induce side effects of

* Fatigue is a result of a chemo drug that kills cells discriminatorily.

* Hair loss is a result of a chemo drug that damages the hair follicles.

* Easy bruising and bleeding and infection are the results of reduced function of coagulation and a weakened immune system.

* Anemia (low red blood cell counts) is caused by the killing of the red blood cells.

* Nausea and vomiting and appetite changes are some general symptoms of chemo drugs. Delayed nausea and vomiting most commonly start more than 24 hours after chemo and up to 5 to 7 days after treatment

* Constipation is the effects of chemo drugs on the digestive system.

Treatment of side effects is completely depending on the symptoms.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, and wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the nanoemulsion developed as an advanced form for improving the delivery of turmeric extract-loaded nanoemulsion powder-10.6 (TE-NEP-10.6, high content of artificial surfactant Tween 80), which forms the optimal nanoemulsion, and the TE-NEP-8.6 made by increasing the content of natural emulsifier (lecithin) on reducing risk chemotoxicity.

In cultured NIH3T3, H9C2, HepG2, hCPC, and hEPC, nanoemulsion treatment exerted no significant difference in cell viability in all tested cell lines.

Both nanoemulsion treatments showed no toxicity at an experimental concentration of less than 1 mg/mL.

However, the cell survival rate of all tested primary cultured cells decreased in a concentration-dependent manner.

In other words, both nanoemulsion powder-10.6 and TE-NEP-8.6 inhibited the cancer cell's growth without affecting chemotoxicity.

Additionally, according to the results of a joint study led by The New College (Autonomous), phyto-synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) including aqueous garlic, green tea, and turmeric extracts not only showed significant antioxidant activity against the DNA alternation in the initiation of cancer but also enhanced the cytotoxicity activity against four cancer cells lines such as human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7), cervical (HeLa), epithelioma (Hep-2) and lung (A549) along with one normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF) cell line.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The AgNPs synthesized using turmeric extract exhibit excellent antioxidant and cytotoxicity activity compared to that synthesized using other extracts".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

The #NavyBean Effects on #MetabolicSyndrome, Particularly in Men, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of health problems including too much fat around the waist, elevated blood pressure, high triglycerides, elevated blood sugar, and low HDL cholesterol that increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and diabetes.
More precisely,
*Too much fat around the waist is a condition found in people who eat too much carbohydrates and exercise too little, leading to the gain of weight around the waist.

* High blood pressure or hypertension

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood. High blood pressure means raising the pressure in your heart. If the condition stays high over time, it can damage the body in many ways.

High blood pressure can be preventable. Some researchers suggested if you can control your diet, make changes to your lifestyle, and maintain an ideal weight, you could do just fine without the drugs.
* High blood cholesterol or hyperlipidemia occurs when the excess cholesterol that use to build cell walls, make hormones and vitamin D, and create bile salts to help you digest fat cannot be returned to the liver caused by either over-expression of low-density lipoprotein (HLD) or low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HLD).

* High blood glucose or hyperglycemia found in diabetics occurs when the blood glucose level is too high caused by either insufficient levels of insulin produced by the body or the inability of the body to use insulin properly, leading to the rise of blood sugar.

* High blood triglycerides
Triglycerides stored in the fat cells is a result of the body that converts extra calories that don't need to use right away into triglycerides.

High blood triglyceride is a condition of over-expression of fat in the blood. The most common causes of high blood triglycerides are physically inactive, eating foods that are high in fat and sugar, processed food and red meat, and long-term excessive alcohol drinking.

Some medications such as medicines used for the treatment of breast cancer, high blood pressure, and HIV, may also raise blood triglycerides.

In other words, if you have 3 of the aforementioned conditions, your metabolic risk of heart attack, stroke, and diabetes is considered higher compared to those who do not.

The small, white navy bean, also called pea bean or haricot, popular in both dry and green forms, is very popular in Britain and the US, native to Peru. It is now grown and consumed across the world, due to its numerous health benefits.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of metabolic syndrome, researchers determined the effect of commercially available ready-to-eat canned navy beans added to the habitual diet on risk factors associated with obesity.

The experiment included 14 overweight and obese adults who consumed 5 cups of canned navy beans per week for 4 weeks.

Based on the tested results,
* Bean consumption over the period reduced waist circumference in females by 2.5 cm and males by 2.1 cm (P < 0.001).

* The pulse rate, total cholesterol (TC), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) were also reduced but sex-dependent. More precisely, in males, pulse rate, TC, and LDL were decreased by 6.5%, 11.5%, and 18%, respectively. In females, the pulse rate increased by 9.6%, and TC and LDL were relatively unchanged.

These results strongly suggested that navy bean has a strong implication in decreasing the risk of metabolic syndrome in males compared to females.

* Furthermore, levels of glucose also showed a trend of decreasing in response to a glucose load.

After taking other factors into account, Dr. Luhovyy BL, the lead scientist said, "Consuming 5 cups per week of ready-to-eat canned navy beans for 4 weeks reduces metabolic risk factors associated with obesity and therefore can be used as a tool in dietetic practice".

Taken altogether, Navy beans used alone or combined with conventional medicine may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of metabolic risk, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Ginger Shows a Statistically and Significantly in the improvement of #Osteoarthritis In Clinical Trials

Kyle J. Norton

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a form of arthritis, found in the general term of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) characterized by the wear and tear on joints.
The chronic and medical condition affects over 25 million people in the United States alone.

The characteristics of osteoarthritis are aching pain, stiffness, or difficulty in moving the joint or joints. Therefore one must understand the differences in prevalence and incidence estimates of osteoarthritis (OA), compared to other types of arthritis.

Furthermore, the pain usually gets worse in a change of weather, at night, and in advanced diseases, and the pain can occur even at rest.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of osteoarthritis

Conventionally, the management of osteoarthritis (OA) focuses on pain relief and improves physical function through pharmacological, nonpharmacological, and surgical treatments if it is necessary.

If you are currently taking some of the medications for the treatment of osteoarthritis, please make sure you know all the side effects for preventive measures.

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of osteoarthritis, some researchers suggested that the increase in age is one of the disease prevalent factors found in the aging population.

Dr. Richard F. Loeser, said, "Basic aging studies in non-articular cells suggest that cell stress or cell damage response contributes to chronic inflammation that promotes age-related diseases. This cellular response results in the senescence-associated secretory phenotype which has many of the characteristics of an OA chondrocyte in terms of the cytokines, chemokines, and proteases produced".

And, "Because OA occurs in older adults who also have age-related changes in muscle, bone, fat, and the nervous system, it is likely that a more general and systemic approach will be needed to better understand the link between aging and OA".

The result strongly indicated the increased risk of osteoarthritis in the elderly.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of osteoarthritis assessed the clinical efficacy and safety of oral ginger for the symptomatic treatment of osteoarthritis (OA).

The study included 68 participants with osteoarthritis who were randomly assigned evenly to receive standard treatment with or without self-knee massage with ginger oil twice a week.

At the end of the first and fifth weeks, participants in both groups were assessed regarding pain and functional state.

According to the assessed results, the mean Visual Analog Scale (VAS) Pain scores of the intervention group were significantly lower at the end of the first and fifth weeks compared to the control.
\
Furthermore, the mean total scores and mean Function subscale scores of the functionality in activities of daily living with the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) were significantly lower in the intervention group in the first- and fifth-week assessments, also compared to control.

The results strongly suggested that self-massage of the knee with ginger oil should be used combined with standard medical treatment for osteoarthritis patients.

Based on the findings, Dr.Tosun B, the lead scientist said, "Nurses can easily train patients and their caregivers on knee massage, and the intervention can be implemented by patients at home without any restrictions on location".

In order to reveal more information about the ginger effect on osteoarthritis, researchers launched a systematic literature search followed by meta-analyses on selected studies, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing oral ginger treatment with placebo in OA patients aged >18 years.

According to the Hedges' standardized mean difference (SMD), and safety by risk ratio (RR), out of 122 retrieved references, 117 were discarded, leaving five trials (593 patients) for meta-analyses.

Ginger intake showed a statistically significant pain reduction with a low degree of inconsistency among trials.

Quality of life from the selected trials also statistically and significantly improved in favor of the ginger group.

Interestingly, patients given ginger were more than twice as likely to discontinue treatment compared to placebo.

The results exerted a similar efficacy as seen in the aforementioned study.

Taken together, ginger may be used alone or combined with primary therapy for the treatment of osteoarthritis, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#RegularWalking Maybe An Exercise with a Potential Pro-Neurogenic and Anti-Inflammatory Intervention for Cognition, Studies Find

Kyle J. Norton

Regular physical activity has long been found to associate with the prevention of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic diseases, but a regular walking contribution to reduced risk and progression of Alzheimer's disease in younger and older elderly patients has been lacking, probably due to in reversibility in disease controlling(1) and in most cases in older adults(2).

Alzheimer's destroys brain cells, causing problems with memory, thinking, and behavior severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies, or social life. Alzheimer's gets worse over time, and it is fatal, due to the progression of the formation of plaques and tangles.

Strengthening the immune system fights against inflammation, reduces high blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels, and a healthy diet will help to prevent Alzheimer's disease(3).

In a new study conducted by the São Paulo State University, multimodal exercise, including walking intervention on frontal cognitive functions and kinematic gait parameters may be effective to prevent the progression in patients with Alzheimer's disease(4).

According to a study of the performance of exercise programs such as walking, of 134 ambulatory patients with mild to severe AD, significantly improved their ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs), physical performance, and nutritional and decreased behavioral disturbance and depression in patients(5).

In support of regular walking in the improvement of cognitive and physical function in AD patients, Dr. Vreugdenhil A and colleagues at the University of Tasmania, said, "Participation in a community-based exercise program can improve cognitive and physical function and independence in ADL in people with Alzheimer's disease,.... under the supervision of their carer. (6),

In fact, regular walking in elderly exercise programs also showed to slow the rate of functional deterioration in mild AD and reduce falls and disease progression(8) in patients suffering from advanced AD(7), a major concern of caregivers, through the improvement of balance performance(8).

Dr. Ryan SM and colleagues in the study of examined exercise-mediated effects on AD pathology, cognitive function, hippocampal neurogenesis, and neuroinflammation in transgenic mouse models of AD, concluded, "Exercise presents a promising non-pharmacological option to potentially delay the onset of or slow down the progression of AD"(9) through " induced effects on hippocampal neurogenesis, cognitive function, and neuroinflammation, and consider exercise as a potential pro-neurogenic and anti-inflammatory intervention for cognition"(10)

Some researchers suggested that the effectiveness of exercise in delaying the onset of or slowing down the progression of AD by preventing amyloid-β (Aβ) load, probably are the result of exercise-induced protection against AD-related mitochondrial dysfunction and phenotypic deterioration(11).

#Tomato's Lycopene and #TomatoPowders TP Inhibit the Risk of Complications of Obese Patients, Studies Show

Kyle J. Norton

Obesity is a progressive chronic disease, associated with abnormal or excessive fat accumulation in the body.
People who have a BMI of over 30 are considered to be obese.

According to the statistics provided by Obesity Cabada, the rate of obesity has increased at an alarming rate in Canada over the past few decades.

Approximately over 30% of Canadian adults are considered obese that may require medical support to manage their disease.

Epidemiologically, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, cancer, and other major health problems have been found in most obese patients, causing concern to the scientific community in the health care system.

Believe it or not, obesity has been found to contribute to one in 10 premature deaths among Canadian adults aged 20 to 64. As of today, the healthcare system in Canada has spent between $5 billion and $7 billion for the treatment of obese-related complications.

Furthermore, obesity is associated with increased mortality and a number of complications including diabetes, heart disease, dementia, and cancer.

And, the commitment to reduced weight through a healthy diet accompanied by moderate exercise has been proposed to target the complications.

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of obesity, the social economy may have some implications involved in the onset of the disease.

Dr. BRIAN HOULE wrote in the article "How Obesity Relates to Socioeconomic Status" "...obesity rose with a nation’s economic development, but also that socioeconomic status, as it related to obesity, changed. In lower-income countries, people with higher SES were more likely to be obese. Conversely, in high-income countries, those with higher SES were less likely to be obese".

And, "Why the reversal? It may be that in lower-income countries, higher SES leads to consuming high-calorie food and avoiding physically tough tasks. But in higher-income countries, individuals with higher SES may respond with healthy eating and regular exercise".

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, and belongs to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

In finding a natural and potential compound for the treatment of obesity, researchers review the link between the high intake of lycopene or tomato products in the risk for metabolic diseases by comparing the effect of lycopene and tomato powder on obesity-associated disorders.

The study included selected Male C57BL/J6 mice randomly assigned into four groups to receive: a control diet (Chigh-fat fat diet (HFD), a high-fat diet supplemented with lycopene, or with tomato powder (TP) for 12 weeks.

In mice treated with HFD, lycopene, and TP supplementation significantly improve the obesity complications caused by adiposity index, organ, and relative organ weights, serum triglycerides, and free fatty acids.

Furthermore, lycopene and TP supplementation also inhibit 8-iso-prostaglandin GF2α associated with an increased risk of heart disease and improved glucose homeostasis, against the onset of abnormal blood glucose.

Furthermore, Lycopene and TP supplementation prevented HFD-induced hepatosteatosis and hypertrophy of adipocytes associated with patients of obesity.

Moreover, lycopene and TP also decreased HFD-induced production of proinflammatory cytokines in the liver and in the epididymal adipose tissue found in obese subjects.

According to the tested assay, lycopene and TP anti-inflammatory effects were attributed to the inhibition of the protein involved in the promotion of the expression of inflammation in adipose tissue.

Based on the findings, lycopene, and TP protected significantly obese subjects against the onset of obesity complications.

Dr. Fenni S after taking other factors into account wrote, "These results suggest that lycopene or TP supplementation display similar beneficial health effects that could be particularly relevant in the context of nutritional approaches to fight obesity-associated pathologies".

Taken altogether, tomatoes processed a high amount of lycopene may be considered whole food for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with obesity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#RegularWalking Improves All Parameters Associated with Metabolic Symdrome, Researchers Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Insulin resistance (IR), one of the metabolic syndromes, is a condition of failure of cellular normal response to the hormone insulin. Patients with insulin resistance are found to have a significant risk to develop type 2 diabetes(1)(2)(3) and Heart diseases(3).

Regular physical activity has long been found to associate with the prevention of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and other chronic diseases, but the regular walking contribution to reduced risk of Insulin Resistance in the younger and older elderly have been lacking, probably due to the effectiveness of modern restrict diet(4) and psychological therapies(5) in syndrome controlling.

A recent study conducted by the Klinika za Endokrinologiju showed that 10 sessions--35 min session of walking on the treadmill, intensity 60.8 +/- 5.7% (VO2)max, frequency 5 times a week), had had a significant influence on the increased aerobic capacity and insulin sensitivity in the tested patients(7), as well as enhanced suppression of hepatic glucose production(8).
In the review of data of 278,989 people (111,524 males and 167,465 females) living in Chiba Prefecture who underwent consecutive medical check-ups in 2008 and 2009, Dr. Ashizawa E and colleagues at the Chiba Prefectural Institute of Public Health said, "In men, the odds of developing MetS were significantly lower for participants who exercised regularly ("walking fast," OR=0.88, 95% CI [0.83-0.93]; and "higher physical activity," 0.85, [0.80-0.90])"(6).

Brisk walking, a popular and readily attainable form of moderate-intensity physical activity, is one of the best suitable for the majority of individuals to improve metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk factors in overweight male subjects, according to a study by the University of Tsukuba(10).

Indeed, reductions in walking reduce insulin sensitivity and insulin signaling through multiple cellular processes in glucose metabolism(9) that induces the risk of Insulin Resistance in the progression of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
