#Herbal #Artichokeleafextract ALE #Exerts a Clinical Significance in Lowing the Levels of #Triglycerides, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Triglycerides are body fat found in humans derived from glycerol and saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids.

The triglycerides are stored in your fat cells for energy in the future when the body needs it.

Unlike cholesterol produced by the liver and absorbed through diet to build cell walls, produce steroid hormone and vitamin D, and aid digestion, the primary triglycerides function is to store as unused calories and provide your body with energy.

From a health perspective, the levels of triglycerides can affect your health and risk of cardiovascular disease.
1. Normal, if your level is less than 150 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL), or less than 1.7 millimoles per liter (mmol/L)
2. Borderline high if your level is between 150 and 199 mg/dL (1.8 and 2.2 mmol/L)
3. High, if your level is between 200 and 499 mg/dL (2.3 and 5.6 mmol)
4. Very high, if your level is above 500 mg/dL (above 5.7 mmol/L)

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of obesity investigated the artichoke extract anti overexpression of triglycerides by reviewing the medical literature online.

From the databases of PubMed-Medline, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases up to March 28, 2017, RCTs satisfied the standard criteria, and guidelines were selected for the investigation of the impact of artichoke extracts on plasma lipid levels.

According to the Meta-analysis of data from 9 trials including 702 subjects artichoke extract showed significant activity against the overexpression of plasma concentrations, including lowering the triglycerides by -9.2 mg/dL.

The injection of artichoke extract according to the selected studies did not exert any impact on the levels of high-density lipoprotein, compared to the strong effect on lowering the levels of low-density lipoprotein.

These results suggested that the artichoke supplement reduced plasma lipid levels by inhibiting the levels of both total and LDL-C, and triglycerides.

Furthermore, in order to reveal more details of the artichoke effect on triglycerides, researchers examined fecal excretion of neutral bile acids and sterols in subjects after the artichoke leaf extract (ALE) intake.

The animal model study included 64 Golden Syrian hamsters (8 weeks old) fed randomly either a control diet or a similar diet containing ALE (4.5 g/kg diet) for 6 weeks.

According to the observation up to day 21, ALE injection showed no significant changes in plasma lipid levels, including non-HDL cholesterol triglycerides or fecal-neutral sterols.

However, after day 42, ALE exerted a clinical significance in lowing the levels of triglycerides by 22% in male and 29% in female hamsters, compared to control.

The findings strongly suggested that ALE processes anti-triglyceride accumulation by a mechanism involving the greater excretion of fecal bile acids and neutral sterols after feeding for 42 days.

According to the accumulated information, it is safe to say that artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for the treatment of elevated non-HDL cholesterol triglycerides with no side effects, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study

#CucumberLeaves Inhibit the Risk of Bacterial Infection, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Infection is a condition that leads to inflammation caused by the invasion of a microbial organism on body tissues
The bacterial infection is an infection caused by bacteria. Most cases of bacterial infection are treated with antibiotics. However, bacteria are very adaptable, and overuse of antibiotics has made many of them resistant to antibiotics.

There are trillions of strains of bacteria in the world, but only a few of these cause diseases in humans. Some of them live inside our gut.

The most common symptoms of bacterial infection include redness and heat, swelling, fever, and pain at the site of infection.

In severe cases, the patient may also experience symptoms of swollen lymph glands.

Most cases of bacterial infection can be treated successfully if the types of bacteria that cause the infection are identified.

There are many risk factors associated with the onset of bacterial infection, some researchers suggested that people with a weakened immune system may increase the prevalence of bacterial infection.

Dr. Doyon PR, the lead scientist wrote, "Patients with a weakened immune system due to immunosuppressive treatment are at increased risk of infection with Streptococcus pneumoniae".

And, " in patients treated with immunosuppressive medication and compared to controls, the initial serologic response to the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV) is impaired. Moreover, this impaired response was more profound after PCV than after PPSV".

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

With an aim to find a natural antibiotic for the treatment of bacterial infection, researchers compared the effect of potassium phosphite (KPhi) and chitosan on Cucurbitacin E (CuE) concentration in different tissues of Cucumis sativus against E.coli PTCC 1399 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa PTCC 1430 bacterial strains.

The experiment includes* Group1. Leaves were sprayed with distilled water (Control),
* Group 2. The leaves were solely treated with potassium phosphate (KPhi),
* Group 3. Leaves were solely sprayed with chitosan (Chitosan), and
* Group 4. Leaves were treated with KPhi and chitosan (KPhi + chitosan).

Where the KPhi (2 g L-1) and chitosan (0.2 g L-1) were applied twice every 12 h for one day. Fruits, roots, and leaves were harvested 24 h later.

According to the results of antibacterial activity in each group, the highest level of CuE was found in fruit (2.2 g L-1) of plants under concomitant applications of KPhi and chitosan.

In other words, under the infected stage, fruit extract exhibited the highest potential for activity against E. coli PTCC 1399 (with a mean zone of inhibition equal to 36 mm) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa PTCC 1430 (with a mean zone of inhibition equal to 33 mm).

Based on the findings, researchers concluded, "KPhi and chitosan can induce production of CuE compound and increase the antibacterial potential of cucumber plant extract".

Additionally, researchers in the examination of cucumber seed's antibacterial effect also found that besides acting as natural antibiotics without affecting nearby healthy cells, cucumber seed also has strong activity in improving good bacteria in the gut.

Precisely, cucumber seed enhanced the total number of gut bacteria and altered the abundance of specific bacterial phylum or genus.

Taken altogether, cucumber and its bioactive compound cucurbitacin B (CuB) may be used for the treatment of bacterial infection, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of CuB in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Yoga Exercises Improve the Psychological and Physical Aspects in Patients with #PosttraumaticStressDisorder, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Epidemiological studies suggested that yoga intervention may improve psychological and physical aspects in patients diagnosed with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychological condition triggered by terrifically experienced or witnessed events.

Yoga, the ancient practical technique for harmonizing external and internal body well beings, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been well-known for people in the Western world and some parts of Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

In the concern of 10 million women with histories of interpersonal violence in the United States who have developed posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), researchers at the Trauma Center at Justice Resource Institute conducted a study included Sixty-four women with chronic, treatment-resistant PTSD randomly assigned to either trauma-informed yoga or supportive women's health education, with a weekly 1-hour class for 10 weeks, at the end of the experiment indicated that yoga program expressed a significantly improved the syndrome, causing 16/ 31 participants no longer met criteria for PTSD in compared to 6 of 29 (21%) in the control group, linearly to the length of participation of the class of yoga in the trend of syndrome improvement.

According to the measurement of the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS), the yoga group expressed a better outcome in exhibiting significantly decrease complications related to affect and impulse regulation.

In fact, yoga exercises, use deep relaxation and meditation to create a state of consciousness in the present moment and increased the ability to maintain positive feelings to minimize or regulate stress feelings and defensive states.

Although, the achievement of mind calmness and induced dramatization to individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in performing mediation may be difficult during the early stage of treatment, instruction, and guidance of yoga breathing was shown to gradually improve the individual attention to bodily sensations in the modulation of autonomic arousal and decreased cognitive patterns of distraction.

More importantly, Dr. van der Kolk BA, the led author said, "Both groups exhibited significant decreases in PTSD symptoms during the first half of treatment, but these improvements were maintained in the yoga group, while the control group relapsed after its initial improvement" and " Yoga may improve the functioning of traumatized individuals by helping them to tolerate physical and sensory experiences associated with fear and helplessness and to increase emotional awareness and affect tolerance".

Additionally, yoga breathing and mindfulness practices also improved attention on sensory experiences and physical sensations, including body tension, rapid heartbeat, and short, shallow breath in triggering an emotional response in a positive way.

Some researchers suggested that yoga postures not only help PTSD to gain awareness of the body and its strength, feeling calm and control of thoughts but also overcome the bad experiences of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) life through the expression of a friendly relationship with the body in confronting internal sensations.

Interestingly, the investigation of the effect of yoga intervention on alcohol and drug abuse behaviors in women with PTSD, using data from a pilot randomized controlled trial by comparing a 12-session yoga practice with an assessment control for women aged 18 to 65 years, measured by Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) and Drug Use Disorder Identification Test (DUDIT), showed that yoga group expressed a mean AUDIT and DUDIT scores decreased a reduction in symptoms and improvement of symptom management in a yoga group in compared to control.

Amazingly, yoga participants after the experiment also expressed interest in psychotherapy for PTSD.

The efficacy of yoga intervention in recovering addicts was attributed to the relaxation and mindfulness intervention in the induction of calmness of the body and mind to enhance experience feelings of peace and comfort to deal with increased addictive temptation and to cop and tolerate the uncomfortable feelings and sensations that can lead to the reinstatement of drug-seeking behavior.

The findings suggested that yoga intervention can be used as an integrated form of practice to attenuate the symptoms of PTSD, through improving psychological and physical aspects related to the risk of alcohol and drug addiction and an adjunct therapy used together with the primary treatment of patients with post-traumatic stress disorder.

#Phytochemical #Alliin Isolated from #Garlics and #Onions Inhibits #BreastCancer Through Many Mechanisms in Vitros, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

Breast cancer is a medical condition caused the irregular cell growth in the breast tissue due to the alternation of cell DNA.

According to the statistic, in 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in women in the U.S. and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8.

Most cases of breast cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the breast either from the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.

At the early stage, breast cancer is a painless lump in the breast or armpit. However, at the later stage, most women with breast cancer may experience symptoms of nipple discharge (clear or bloody)
inverted or retracted nipple, scaly or pitted skin on nipple, persistent tenderness of the breast and
unusual breast pain or discomfort.

According to statistics, the 5 years survival rate of early-diagnosed breast cancer is close to 100%.

However, in the rare case of aggressive inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) that induces the growth in sheets instead of lumps and invades nearby skin, the whole breast may go suddenly red and feel hot, resembling an inflammation.

The disease only occurs in 1-6% of all breast cancer cases in the USA. Women with IBC are first treated with chemotherapy before surgery. On average, the 5-year survival rate of women diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer is 34% compared to the early stage of breast cancer of 100%.

Out of many risk factors associated with the risk of breast cancer, the genetic proposition is one of the factors that may predict the onset of the disease.

Dr. Turnbull C, the lead scientist said, "BRCA1 and BRCA2 are high-penetrance breast cancer predisposition genes identified by genome-wide linkage analysis and positional cloning. Mutational screening of genes functionally related to BRCA1 and/or BRCA2 has revealed four genes, CHEK2, ATM, BRIP1, and PALB2; mutations in these genes are rare and confer an intermediate risk of breast cancer".

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide, and a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

In finding a natural potential for the treatment of breast cancer, researchers examined the combination of garlic-derived S-allyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide (alliin) and paclitaxel (PTX) effect on breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7 cells.

According to the Western blotting assay, alliin and PTX worked synergistically to promote and potentiate apoptosis in MCF-7 cells by inhibiting the altered expression of importin-9 (IPO9) involved in transcription, cell signaling, and cell cycle regulation.

Furthermore, the inhibition of the IPO9 expression was also found to correlate with a significant reduction in the apoptotic cell population as well as with a decrease in F-actin content in the cancer cells, leading to alteration of cell DNA and in the cortical and nuclear/perinuclear areas of the cells.

Simultaneously, the inhibition of IPO9 by alliin and PTX was also accompanied by the increased post-translational expression of CFL1 associated with the reduction of cell proliferation and metastasis.

In other words, garlic-derived S-allyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide (alliin) and paclitaxel (PTX) induced breast cancer MCF-7 cells death by inhibiting the protein associated with cell differentiation and division through the reduction of cell proliferation and metastasis.

The combined compound exhibited anti-MCF-7 cells activity by targeting modulating the cytoskeleton present in the cytoplasm of cancer cells through some aforementioned mechanisms.

Taken altogether, alliin used alone or combined with primary medicine may be used for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Yoga's Exercises Show a Significantly Energetic Expression After Classes in Participants, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Yoga may have a strong and profound effect on improved energy expression, some scientists suggested.
Yoga, the ancient practical technique for harmonizing external and internal body well beings, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been best known to people in the Western world and some parts of Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

The study investigates study, the effects of yoga pose on the subjective sense of energy and self-esteem. compared to the effects of 'power poses, after taking into account other confounders, researchers found that the yoga group participating in meditation score a significantly increased subjective sense of energy compared to the control.

Further analysis, the study also suggested that yoga posts with performing open, expansive body postures may be driven by processes other than the poses in association with interpersonal power and dominance.

Interestingly, Dr. Golec de Zavala A, the lead author said, "Positive effects of yoga practice can occur after performing yoga poses for only 2 min".

Other researchers in the evaluation of the feasibility, acceptability, and patient-reported effectiveness of a clinical yoga program at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center and assessed whether these outcomes differed between those participating in-person and those participating via telehealth based on 64 Veterans who completed the survey researchers concluded that more than 80% of veterans showed an improvement of energy levels after participating, yoga class.

Furthermore, the returned survey also indicated that yoga participants demonstrated an overall improvement or improvement in any of 16 specific health problems.

Another study in comparison of the energy expenditure during acute bouts of vinyasa yoga and 2 walking protocols of participants (20 males, 18 females) who performed 60-minute sessions of vinyasa yoga (YOGA), treadmill walking at a self-selected brisk pace (SELF), and treadmill walking at a pace that matched the heart rate of the YOGA session (HR-Match) suggested that
Energy expenditure was significantly lower in YOGA compared with HR-Match (difference = 79.5 ± 44.3 kcal; P < .001) and SELF (difference = 51.7 ± 62.6 kcal; P < .001), but not in SELF compared with HR-Match (difference = 27.8 ± 72.6 kcal; P = .054). A similar pattern was observed for metabolic equivalents (HR-Match = 4.7 ± 0.8, SELF = 4.4 ± 0.7, YOGA = 3.6 ± 0.6; P < .001). Analyses using only the initial 45 minutes from each of the sessions, which excluded the restorative component of YOGA, showed energy expenditure was significantly lower in YOGA compared with HR-Match (difference = 68.0 ± 40.1 kcal; P < .001) but not compared with SELF (difference = 15.1 ± 48.7 kcal.

The reduced expenditure of energy in yoga participation may be another indication of yoga participants showed significantly energetic expression after yoga class.

Physically, yoga-certain postures were also found to improve the digestive system in the absorption of nutrients as well as blood circulation in transporting them to the body tissues and organs, thus increasing energy in 2 ways
1. By improving digestive problems such as indigestion, cramping, bloating, and constipation.
2. For healthy people, yoga enhanced energy balance, by regulating gut peptides in the expression of autocrine signaling

Psychologically, yoga breathing and meditation promoted calmness and relaxation of the central nervous system and have strong implications in reducing psychic symptoms such as anxiety, depression, stress...improving sleep patterns, particularly insomnia.

Truly, people with a high level of psychological distress caused by psychic problems often difficulty falling and staying asleep and have a tendency to doze off early and wake up feeling exhausted and decreased energy levels.

Taking all together, yoga exercise may be considered as primary therapy in improving daily energy levels for people encountering a hectic life. with full of incessant or frantic activity.

However, The overall information may only serve as preliminary evidence for the effectiveness of a clinical yoga program before supporting the use of yoga in healthcare settings, especially in energy enhancement.

#Phytochemical #Alliin Prevents Cardiotoxicity by Improving All #Biochemical Parameters in Vivos, Researchers Show

Kyle J. Norton

Cardiotoxicity is a condition caused by toxins accumulated in the heart that leads to damage to the heart muscle.

Cardiotoxicity reduced the heart's pumping blood capability, leading to a decrease in oxygen-rich blood to nourish the body tissues and organs.

The most common symptoms of cardiotoxicity, are tiredness fatigue, chronic cough, water retention, and shortness of breath.

If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms that can be healed within a week or 2, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

The most common causes of cardiotoxicity are associated with patients receiving chemotherapy and intake of certain medications. However, infection, excessive alcohol consumption, medical conditions such as diabetes and thyroid disease, high blood pressure, and thiamine and Vitamin B deficiency have also been found to induce cardiotoxicity.

Some researchers suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades that facilitate widespread obesity may increase the cardiotoxicity risk of obese who are treated by chemotherapy.

Dr. Mitra MS, the lead scientist said, "Often, chemotherapy by doxorubicin (Adriamycin) is limited due to life-threatening cardiotoxicity in patients during and posttherapy. Recently, we have shown that moderate diet restriction remarkably protects against doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity".

And, "HFD-induced obese rats are highly sensitized to doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity".

In other words, non-obese patients who follow the recommended diet before taking chemotherapy for the treatment of cancer are less sensitive to doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity compared to a high-fat diet obese.

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

With an aim to find a potential compound with cardioprotective activity, researchers examined the effect of S-allyl cysteine sulphoxide (SACS) in isoproterenol (ISO)-induced cardiotoxicity in male Wistar rats.

The study included myocardial infarction induced by subcutaneous injection of ISO (150 mg/kg) once a day for 2 days followed by SACS (40 and 80 mg/kg) as pretreatment orally daily for a period of 35 days using an intragastric tube.

SACS pretreatment showed significantly lowered levels of free radicals and increased antioxidant activities of mitochondrial superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and glutathione (GSH).

Furthermore, SACS pretreatment not only decreased the levels of mitochondrial cholesterol, free fatty acids (FFAs), triglycerides (TGs), and calcium, associated with plaque accumulation and the activity of xanthine oxidase (XOD) involved the production of the free radicals in the heart, but also increased significantly the levels of mitochondrial phospholipids of the inner membrane of the heart against damage.

Moreover, pretreatment of SACS also protected the heart mitochondrial fraction by increasing the activities of isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICDH), succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase (alpha-KGDH), NADH-dehydrogenase, and cytochrome C-oxidase.

Interestingly, oral administration of SACS for a period of 35 days showed no cardio effect in normal control rats.

In other words, SACS modulated heart function against mitochondrial cardiotoxicity without affecting the heart function in healthy control.

Based on the findings researchers said, "The effect at a dose of SACS 80 mg/kg was more effective than the dose 40 mg/kg. The results of the study conclude that SACS protects the mitochondria of the ISO-induced myocardial-infarcted rats".

In order to know more information about SACS cardioprotective activity, researchers examined the preventive role of SACS on glycoproteins and hematology in experimentally induced myocardial infarction in rats for 2 days.

Injection of SACS restored the abnormally significant increase in the levels of serum iron, uric acid, and blood glucose, Na(+) and Ca(2+) characterized by heart damage and elevated blood glucose.

Furthermore, the significant decrease in the levels of plasma iron binding capacity, serum total protein, albumin/globulin ratio, heart K(+), and heart glycogen induced by isoproterenol (ISO) associated with heart tissues damage were also inhibited by the treatment of SACS in myocardial infarcted rats.

Moreover, SACS also modulated the immune response in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines induced by isoproterenol (ISO) toxicity.

Additional differentiation of the results suggested that oral pretreatment with SACS (40 and 80 mg kg(-1)) daily for a period of 35 days prevents cardiotoxicity by improving all the biochemical parameters studied in ISO-induced rats.

Taken altogether, alliin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of cardiotoxicity, depending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Good news for men coffee lovers, coffee and coffee caffeine consumption daily and regularly are associated with attenuated risk and treatment of prostate cancer, the epidemiological study suggested.
Coffee has become a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Prostate Cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollable in the prostate.

The study of the efficacy of coffee intake and risk of prostate cancer (PC-3 and DU145) on 6,989 men of the Moli-Sani cohort aged ≥50 years showed that
1. Risk of prostate cancer was reduced by 53% in people drinking over>3 cups/day compared to participants at the lowest consumption (0-2 cups/day)
2. Injection of caffeine in both cancer cell lines PC-3 and DU145 showed substantial activity in the reduction of proliferative and metastatic behaviors.

Caffeine demonstration exerted significant antiproliferative and antimetastatic activity on two prostate cancer cell lines may be attributed to its bioactive compounds in the expression of anti-cancer in various mechanisms.

Other, in the selection of twenty-eight studies (14 case-control and 14 cohort studies) on coffee caffeine (CC) with 42399 PC patients for the final meta-analysis searched from databases of Pubmed and Embase, researchers, filed the following results

1. There was no significant association of prostate cancer in regard to high versus non/lowest intake.

2. Coffee and coffee caffeine intake showed a localized effect in the subtype of prostate cancer but not advanced prostate cancer.

These results showed a significant effect of coffee in reduced risk of the early stage of prostate cancer and coffee does not associate with the risk of prostate cancer.

More profoundly in the report of a prospective analysis of 47,911 men with the intake of regular and decaffeinated coffee in 1986 and every 4 years thereafter in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study
1. Men, drinking six or more cups per day had the lowest relative risk for overall prostate cancer compared to non-drinkers.

2. Overall, Coffee consumption was not associated with the risk of nonadvanced or low-grade prostate cancers and was only weakly inversely associated with high-grade prostate cancer

3. There was no differential effect of regular and decaffeinated coffee in the ameliorated risk of prostate cancer.
Taken all together, there is no doubt that coffee and coffee caffeine intake were associated linearly to
reduced risk of localized and advanced and lethal prostate cancer, Risk of cancer is also reduced proportionally with an additional cup of coffee consumed.
