#Coffee and #CoffeeCaffeine Reduces the Risk of Type 2 #Diabetes in #Obesity, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Coffee, second to green tea is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, made from roast beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Obesity is a medical condition of excess body fat accumulated over time. According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.

The good news for coffee lovers, bioactive components found in coffee may have a potential effect in reduced risk and management of obesity, a renowned institute study opinionated.

According to the joint study led by the National Taiwan University, the efficacy of coffee in reduced risk and management of obesity over the last 10 years of research, may be attributed to
1. decrease lipid accumulation in cells via the regulation of the cell cycle in fat tissue
2. improved fat metabolic formation in both protein and transcription factors expression

In humans, it is the result of decreased body weight and visceral fat stored within the abdominal cavity.

Furthermore, the study also expressed the importance of coffee intake to influence the gut microbiota in obese animals and humans.

Additionally, in the evaluation of possible lipid catabolism and body fat regulation effects of 3-caffeoylquinic acid in Green coffee bean extract (GCBE) in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice fed with only HFD or HFD with GCBE at 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg, respectively, researchers filed the following results
1. GCBE treated group showed a significantly decreased body weight gain, and liver, and white adipose tissue weights, but importantly intake of coffee also regulated adipose tissue lipolysis hormones in breaking down fat accumulation.

2. The efficacy of the treatment group in reduced obesity risk may also benefit the decreased mRNA expression levels of adipogenesis and adipocyte metabolism in both gene and protein expression.

3. Compared to other treated groups, GCBE-treated mice displayed a lower fat mass and relative body weight and decreased fat mass.

More importantly, in the review of papers from in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro experimental studies in animals and human tissues as well as wide population-based epidemiological studies in the last 10 years, researchers at the joint study led by the South University School of Pharmacy said, " There is mounting evidence of the reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes by regular coffee drinkers of 3-4 cups a day. The effects are likely due to the presence of chlorogenic acids and caffeine, the two constituents of coffee in higher concentration after the roasting process".

Taking it all together, there is no doubt that coffee and coffee caffeine has a significant and potential effect in reducing the risk and management of obesity, through various active biochemicals in dose deepening manner.

#Yoga Intervention Reduces Pregnancy Symptoms, Complications and #Pregnancydiscomforts, Clinical Trials Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Yoga intervention may have a profound and therapeutic effect in reducing pregnancy discomfort, epidemiological studies suggested.

People who participated in yoga classes are likely to experience less or lower levels of anxiety, a renowned study suggested.

In the study of target population primigravidas at 26-28 weeks of gestation (no high-risk pregnancies) who had not engaged in regular exercise or yoga for at least one year to evaluate the acute effect of yoga therapy in risk of pregnancy discomforts with 88 individuals; 43 in the control group and 45 in took part in the prenatal yoga program with duration of the prenatal yoga program of 12-14 weeks, and at least three sessions per week, researchers found that women in the prenatal yoga program group expressed significantly fewer pregnancy discomforts in compared to the control group at the at 38-40 weeks of gestation, particularly, in the outcome and self-efficacy expectancy during the active stage of labor and second stage of labor.

Indeed, pregnancy physical discomfort such as morning sickness fatigue, breast tenderness, constipation,...... and psychological discomforts such as “Rollercoaster” emotions, anxiety, and depression are either the result of hormone change or increased stress levels during pregnancy.

Yoga as an integrated form of exercise with a slow breathing method and meditation ameliorated stress expression by creating a self-consciousness between body and mind, relaxing the central nervous system in reducing psychological discomforts and dealing the physical discomforts in a positive way.

Furthermore, maternal yoga practice also reduced stress in the induction of anxiety, worries, and fear at 38-40 weeks of gestation and during the active stage of labor and second stage of labor through mind and body relaxation in bringing back the presence of expectant motherhood in a naturally conscious way.

Some researchers also suggested that maternal yoga participation such as postures and stretches not only alleviates anxiety around labor but also increases strength in the legs to prepare for the date of labor.

Dr. Yi-Chin Sun, the lead author said, "The provision of booklets and videos on yoga during pregnancy may contribute to a reduction in pregnancy discomforts and improved childbirth self-efficacy" and can be used by healthcare professionals as an evidence-based intervention.

Interestingly, with an aim to improve Pregnancy discomfort and outcome, researchers at the joint study led by the St. John's Medical College and Hospital, Bangalore conducted a study to assess the yoga therapy (YT) module on maternal stress levels in high-risk pregnancy of sixty-eight pregnant women (38 in the control group with standard antenatal care and 30 in the YT group) with 27.2 (5.2) years of mean age from the outpatient services of medical college and hospital in Bangalore, South India, opinionated that by the observation of the Perceived stress scale (PSS), the yoga intervention group demonstrated significantly fewer pregnancy discomforts at the second follow-up (28th week of pregnancy) compared to the control group who experienced an increased stress level.

Some women at the 28th weeks of gestation may experience certain psychological symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, emotional distress,... and physical symptoms of constipation, continued weight gain, heartburn, swelling in limbs, backaches and leg cramps,.....tension

In psychological symptoms, physical postures, breathing, relaxation, and meditation have been shown to calm nervous tension bring back self-consciousness and increased women the ability in maintaining positive feelings or in regulating stress feelings, thus attenuating the symptoms of anxiety, insomnia, emotional distress,... and dealing the physical symptoms in a profound manner.

Dr. CS Deshpande, the lead author, after considering other risk factors said, "YT module can decrease the stress level during high-risk pregnancy complications" and "practicing YT during high-risk pregnancy is not only a cost-effective option but also a feasible and safe option".

In support of the above differentiation, the Eastern Virginia Medical School launched a study by searching the literature published online in the PubMed database from January 1970 to January 2011, out of many studies reviewed, five prospective observational studies (n = 575) and three randomized clinical trials (RCTs; n = 298) met the criteria and guideline selected, researchers after analysis each study individually, suggested that all nonrandomized trials indicated a significant reduction of pregnancy symptoms and complications particularly in pregnancy discomforts and all randomized trials suggested that participated yoga during pregnancy can significantly lower pain and discomfort (p < 0.05) and perceived stress (p = 0.001) and improve quality of life in physical domains

Taking all together, yoga practiced during pregnancy may be considered an integrated form of exercise combined with standard care treatment in reduced pregnancy discomforts, especially in high-risk women.

#Tomatoes Reduce the #Inflammation and #Oxidative Activities Associated with Co-Morbidities in Obesity, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Obesity is a disease characterized by excess body fat accumulated over time. A BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.
Overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height, a BMI that is between 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight.

According to the statistics, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese. Obesity has been found to induce adverse effects in nearly every system of the human body, leading to increased risk of numerous diseases, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Furthermore, the rate of obesity continues to climb at an alarming rate, which leads to significant burdens to the country's economy and health care system.

Currently, there is no effective treatment for the disease. However, some researchers suggested that combating the powerful environmental factors that influence eating and physical activity, particularly in the economy that may be the best approach to reducing the risk of obesity.

Bariatric surgery has been proposed for patients with extreme obesity (BMI of 40 or higher) due to weight-induced serious weight-related health problems, such as diabetes or high blood pressure accompanied by the commitment of lifestyle changes. However, this type of surgery has posed a serious risk to many patients if the commitment to making lifelong changes in their eating and exercise habits cannot be followed through.

There are many risk factors associated with the onset of obesity. Some researchers suggested that the widespread obesity in the US may be correlated to the promotion of high-fat diets over the past few decades.

Dr, Golay A, the lead scientist at the Geneva University Hospital, wrote, "Epidemiological evidence suggests that a high-fat diet promotes the development of obesity and that there is a direct relationship between the amount of dietary fat and the degree of obesity".

And, "Dietary fat induces overconsumption and weight gain through its low satiety properties and high caloric density. Obese and post-obese subjects do not appear to adapt to dietary fat, and therefore fat storage is increased".

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, and belongs to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

On finding a natural and potential compound for the treatment of obesity complications, researchers investigated the effect of the potent tomato-derived antioxidant and oxidative status, and inflammatory markers in obese.

The study included the comparison of 8 obese patients (body mass index 37.5 +/- 2.5 kg/m2) with a control group of eight lean, age and gender-matched subjects (BMI 21.6 +/- 0.6 kg/m2), before and after 4 weeks of lycopene supplementation (tomato-derived Lyc-O-Mato) (30 mg daily).

Before treatment, according to the tested results, compared to control, obese subjects showed significantly reduced levels of plasma carotenoids, increased levels of CRP, and expression of pro-inflammatory cytokine and oxidative stress.

Additional analysis of the findings, BMI was correlated with increased expression of CRP, proinflammation (IL-6), and oxidative stress.

The presence of high levels of IL-6 and oxidative stress was also found to correlate inversely with carotenoids (P < 0.05).

In other words, obese induced increased levels of CRP, IL-6, and oxidative stress were attributed probably to the depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.

After treatment, lycopene a significant elevation of plasma carotenoids (1.79 vs. 0.54 microg/ml) and plasma of lycopene (1.15 vs 0.23 microg/ml) in the subjects compared to the placebo group.

The results suggested that injection of lycopene improved the levels of antioxidants enzymes in the obese, thus preventing the occurrence of diseases associated with CRP, IL-6, and oxidative stress without affecting the markers of inflammation and oxidation products.

Based on the results, researchers concluded, "Obese patients showed abnormally higher markers of inflammation and oxidation products and lower plasma carotenoids".

And, "The lack of reduction of pro-inflammatory markers could be attributed to the short period of the study and the small number of participants".

Taken altogether, tomatoes processed with a high amount of lycopene may be considered supplements for the prevention of obesity-related co-morbidities, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Bilberryextract Inhibits the Parameters Associated with the Risk of #Atherosclerosis in Vivos

Kyle J. Norton

Atherosclerosis, one of the major causes of cardiovascular disease is a medical condition caused by the accumulation of plaque on the arterial wall. Over time, the condition can lead to narrowing arteries or blocked arteries, leading to reduce oxygenated blood flow to the heart and other parts of the body.
Arteries are blood vessels carried oxygen-rich blood to the heart before passing them to the tissues and organs.

Plague is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood. In other words, cholesterol that cannot be returned to the liver for reuse may have a strong impact to induce plaque accumulation.

People in the early stage of atherosclerosis are asymptomatic. However, over time, the continued buildup of plaque on the arterial wall can cause symptoms of chest pain or angina and shortness of breath. fatigue. confusion, due to a blockage or reduce blood flow.

Although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of atherosclerosis, an unhealthy lifestyle, particularly in people who follow the pattern of the Western diet has been found in many patients with the disease.

Dr. Matthias Nahrendorf, the lead scientist wrote, "Diet, exercise, stress, and sleep are receiving attention as environmental modifiers of chronic inflammatory diseases, including atherosclerosis, the culprit condition of myocardial infarction and stroke".

And, "Accumulating data indicate that psychosocial stress and a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet aggravate the cardiovascular disease, whereas regular physical activity and healthy sleeping habits help prevent it".

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrub in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of atherosclerosis researchers evaluated a nutritional supplementation with a bilberry anthocyanin-rich extract (BE) in the atherosclerotic lesion development in apolipoprotein E-deficient (apoE⁻/⁻) mice.

In the early stage of atherosclerosis development in tested mice, BE significantly improved hypercholesterolemia associated with plaques built-up without affecting the plasmatic antioxidant status.

According to the nutrigenomic analysis, BE modulated the expression of the gene involved in different cellular processes such as oxidative stress, inflammation, transendothelial migration, and angiogenesis, that lead to atherosclerosis development/protection.

In other words, BE enhanced the mechanisms involved in the preventive action of bilberry anthocyanin-rich extract against atherosclerosis.

On the development of atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E-deficient mice (apo E(-/-)). Apo E(-/-) mice, researchers compared the efficacy of two bilberry extracts, one rich in anthocyanins extracted from untreated bilberries (BE) and a second one extracted from yeast-fermented bilberries (FBE).

According to the 16 weeks of a diet supplemented with 0.02% of either BE or FBE, both bilberry extracts led to significant inhibition of plaque development, without affecting the levels of oxidative stress parameters or lipid profiles.

These results strongly suggested that bilberry extract inhibited plaque development through other unknown mechanisms.

By comparative tests, fermentation generates new bioactive compounds FBE are more effective in attenuating progression of the atherosclerotic lesions compared to those of BE.

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Turmeric Inhibits the Production of #ProinflammatoryCytokines Associated with the Risk of #PepticUlcers, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

A peptic ulcer is a sore on either the lining of the stomach or duodenum caused by long-term production of digestive acids.

In other words, peptic ulcer can be caused by Helicobacter pylori infection or long-term injection of drugs that weaken the lining of the stomach or duodenum.

There are 2 types of peptic ulcer, including
* Gastric ulcers that affect the lining of the stomach

* Duodenal ulcers that affect the upper portion of the small intestine.

Most common symptom of peptic ulcer is the burning sensation in the stomach. In severe cases, some patients may also experience symptoms vomiting or vomiting blood, inclduing red or dark stool, nausea or vomiting.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Epidemiological studies suggested that smoking-induced risk of bacterial infection, excessive drinking of alcohol drinking and eating spicy food, in the long run, can erode the lining of the stomach and induced overproduction of stomach acid.

Dr. Eastwood GL in the examination of the role of smoking in peptic ulcer disease wrote, "Cigarette smoking appears to be a risk factor for the development, maintenance, and recurrence of peptic ulcer disease. Smoking has an inconsistent effect on gastric acid secretion, but it does have other effects on the upper gastrointestinal function that could contribute to the pathogenesis of peptic ulcer disease".

And, " smokers will benefit immediately by stopping or reducing cigarette consumption".

Conventionally, the most common treatment of peptic ulcer is to prevent further damage by reducing levels of stomach acid so the lining can be healed itself.

In patients with a bacterial infection, antibiotics may be prescribed.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of peptic ulcer, researchers examined the efficacy of adjunctive therapy with curcumin on the eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection and severity of dyspepsia in patients with PU.

The randomized double-blind placebo-controlled parallel-group trial, included patients diagnosed with PU assigned to standard H. pylori eradication triple therapy with clarithromycin (500 mg b.i.d.), amoxicillin (1 000 mg b.i.d.) and pantoprazole (40 mg b.i.d.), and randomized to receive either curcumin (500 mg/day) or placebo as adjunct to standard treatment.

Compared to conventional treatment groups, adjunctive therapy including curcumin was associated with greater improvement of dyspepsia symptoms according to the HKDI score.

Furthermore, in the curcumin treatment group, dyspepsia resolved during the course of treatment was significantly higher (27.6 %) compared to placebo (6.7%) group.

According to the UBT test, curcumin exerted a similar effect (73.3%) against H. pylori.

In other words, curcumin protects the gastrointestinal tract against the onset of peptic ulcers.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Addition of curcumin on top of the standard anti-helicobacter regimen in patients with PU is safe and improves dyspepsia symptoms but has no enhancing effect on the eradication of H. pylori infection".

In order to understand the possible anti-inflammatory mechanisms through which MTrPP delivered antiulcer effects, researchers examined the effect of curcumin on rats triggered with early phase gastric inflammation (LPS) followed by ulcer induction (swim-stress) pretreated with MTrPP (150 mg/kg b.w.) for 14 days.

Where MTrPP is a low molecular weight modified pectin from turmeric.

According to the tested results, MTrPP not only offered up to 91% protection by limiting the production of pro-inflammatory factors (TNF-α, IL-8, NF-κB) but also inhibited the expression of enzymes and matrix associated with the onset of ulcer.

Furthermore, MTrPP also protected the gastrointestinal lining against the initiation of the ulcer by exhibiting the elicitation of gastro-protective mediators such as mucin, prostaglandin E2, NOx, zinc, and IgA, and inhibiting the expression of oxidative stress.

In other words, MTrPP protects all aspects of the gastrointestinal lining by creating a possible environment by switching from the inflammatory to the anti-inflammatory phase.

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of peptic ulcer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

The #Soyfood Effects on the #Obesity in Japanese, According to Studies

Kyle J. Norton

Soybean is the genus Glycine, belonging to the family Fabaceae, one of the legumes that contains twice as much protein per acre as any other major vegetable or grain crop, native to Southeast Asia. Now, it is grown worldwide with a suitable climate for commercial profits.

Japan, an island nation in the Pacific Ocean, lies to the east of the Sea of Japan, China, North Korea, South Korea, and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south(1). According to Moriyama, Japanese women and men live longer and healthier than everyone else on Earth, it may be a result of a healthier Japanese diet and lifestyle. According to the World Health Organization, the Japanese have an average of 75 years of healthy living disability-free, it may be due to average soy intake 10 to 70 times higher than in Western people(1a)(1b).

Soy food intake is well known for its estrogenic effects because it binds the estrogen receptor with relatively high affinity, but effects induced risk of obesity are inconclusive in the West(1)(2)(3).

It may be the result of most Westerners being nonequol producers(4)(5). Some researchers suggested that the prevalence of obesity in the West may be a result of a typical American diet high in saturated and trans-fat and less in fruits and vegetables.

Others blamed the epidemic obesity as a result of an economic environment that makes healthy foods more expensive than junk and suggested of taxes on foods with low nutritional value could nudge behavior toward healthier diets, as could subsidies/discounts for healthier(8). According to a report on NBC by Melissa Dhal, just 10.8 percent of Asians in America are considered obese, a slim percentage when compared with 33 percent of whites, 42 percent of Hispanics, and 48 percent of blacks with a BMI of 30 or higher(7).

In fact, the traditional Japanese diet with a high amount of soy products is associated with a lower BMI in adulthood(9).

According to Dr. Ma J and the research team, early exposure to a high-fat diet diminished the abundance of non-pathogenic Campylobacter in the juvenile gut which may enhance the risk of obesity(10). In fact, DR. Sakata T. said that a very low-calorie conventional Japanese diet of 370 kcal/day has been shown to be useful for weight reduction and long-term maintenance(11). and dietary content and food patterns used in management among Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes are quite close to those reported as suitable for the prevention of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and total mortality in Europe and America, according to the study of 1,516 patients with type 2 diabetes aged 40-70 years from outpatient clinics in 59 university and general hospitals(12). Regarded to diet habits of the West and Japanese working women, the proportion of eating problems is low in comparison with Western adult populations(15).

A study of Occupational Class Differences in Body Mass Index and Weight Gain in Japan and Finland may provide us with interesting results "BMI was higher at baseline and BMI gain was more rapid in Finland than in Japan, it may be results of clear socioeconomic gradients in obesity in Finland compared to the Japanese environment is less obesogenic than the Finnish environment, or factors such as easy access to fast-food restaurants and limited possibilities for physical exercise are suggested characteristics of an obesogenic environment or due to the Japanese diet has traditionally been very healthy, with high consumption of vegetables, soy protein, and fish, with the general nutritional status of the Japanese population is still healthier than that in many Western countries" (13).

Unfortunately, due to the influence of the West, many Japanese have abandoned the traditional Japanese diet and opted for a quick, high-fat diet with lots of junk foods. According to the Kagawa Nutrition University, Japanese traditional and Western were all independently and significantly related to the risk of obesity even among a relatively lean young Japanese female population(14).

Another study suggested that adopting maternal Western-style diet consumption may lead to increased susceptibility to type 2 diabetes in the offspring(16), and Western diet increased the risk for atherosclerosis and promoted the progression of preclinical atherosclerosis, in correspondence with the extent of westernization(17). As undergoing rapid "Westernization,", changes in Japanese dietary patterns continued, with a high intake of butter & margarine, cheese, bread, and ham & sausage, etc.(18), the Westernized chronic illness may rise to a level currently found in the "Western" countries in the coming few decades, including diverticular disease, mammary cancers(19)(20).

#GreenteaExtract and #EGCG Improve the Oral Health by Inhibiting the Progression of Solobacterium Moorei, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea is found to consist a potential effect in the promotion of oral health against bacterial-induced tooth decay or cavities, a renowned institute suggested.

Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine or food, long-term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including lack of energy, weaken immunity, and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory.

According to the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Polyphenols including epigallocatechin 3 gallate (EGCG) isolated from green tea ameliorated oral cavity oxidative stress and inflammation, cigarette smoking and cigarettes' deleterious compounds nicotine and acrolein.

Dr. Narotzki B, the lead author of the study said, " Generally, green tea defends healthy cells from malignant transformation and locally has the ability to induce apoptosis in oral cancer cells.

Altogether, there is an increasing interest in the health benefits of green tea in the field of oral health".

In the review of the beneficial effects of green tea on oral disease, researchers found that green tea not only reduced the bacterial activity in the oral cavity in the expression of the aforementioned oral afflictions but also attenuated the risk of oral cancer through antioxidant activities.

EGCG, in Solobacterium moorei, a volatile sulfide compound (VSC)-producing Gram-positive anaerobic bacterium study, displayed a significant effect in inhibiting the growth of S. moorei, with MIC values of 500 and 250 μg/ml resulting in reduced the adherence of S. moorei to oral epithelial cells.

The study also suggested the efficacy of green tea extract and EGCG protected oral health by inhibiting the progression of Solobacterium moorei probably through the ameliorated S. moorei's β-galactosidase activity in the production of volatile sulfide compound (VSC) in doses dependent manner.

Green tea with abundant natural compounds may be the next generation of whole food used a therapeutic supplement in promoting oral healthcare.
