#Yoga Intervention Is Associated with a Reduced Functional Abdominal Pain Frequency and Intensity, According to Clinical Trials

By Kyle J. Norton

According to studies from the online public medical library, yoga intervention may reduce risk and improve functional abdominal pain as a result of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders.

Functional abdominal pain is a condition of functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders characterized by symptoms of pain associated with diarrhea and/or constipation

People with functional abdominal pain who participated in yoga classes are likely to experience less intensity of pain and pain frequency, some scientists suggested.

Yoga, the ancient technique for harmonized external and internal body wellbeings, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been best known to people in the Western world and some parts of Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes research and supported by health advocates.

In the study of 20 children, aged 8-18 years, with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or functional abdominal pain (FAP) who were enrolled and received 10 yoga lessons, researchers indicated the following results
*Yoga practice group of the 8-11-year-old group and the 11-18-year-old group expressed less pain frequency and the pain was significantly decreased at the end of therapy
*The same above group also expressed a significantly decreased pain intensity
*The pain frequency and intensity also were reduced after 3 months of yoga participation.

Further assessment of the study also found that yoga therapy also improves the quality of life score in all participants.

Although how yoga intervention in reduced abnormal pain is still unknown, some researchers suggested that it may be a result of yoga in initiated psychological effect in reduced correlation and interplayed of various aspects including physiological, psychological, and emotional factors which have been found to have strong implication in induction of abnormal pain.

More precisely, yoga mindfulness connected the physical body and mind and exerted a profound effect in decreasing stress in the induction of emotional instability such as anxiety, irritability and anger through relaxing the central nervous system in the production of certain hormones observed from the change of changes in gray matter concentration in brain regions involved in emotional regulation and arousal circuit, by MRI in the brain of children participated yoga.

Dr.Brands MM, the lead author said, "Yoga exercises are effective for children aged 8-18 years with FAP, resulting in a significant reduction of pain intensity and frequency, especially in children of 8-11 years old."

Additionally, in support of the above analysis, researchers at the joint study led by Jeroen Bosch Hospital conducted an experience of 69 patients, ages 8 to 18 years, with abdominal pain-related functional gastrointestinal disorders (AP-FGIDs), randomized to standard medical care (SMC) complemented with yoga therapy (YT) or SMC alone with YT is a mixture of yoga poses, meditation, and relaxation exercises and given once a week in group sessions and SMC consisted of education, reassurance, dietary advice, and fibers/mebeverine, if necessary illustrated that
*Yoga group expressed a significant decrease in Pain intensity (pain intensity score) and frequency (pain frequency score).

* Researchers also notice that after 12 months., during the study, the yoga group showed no significantly superior compared with SMC, but Subanalyses suggested otherwise (significantly greater reduction of PIS at 12 months in favor of YT).

* More importantly, yoga participants showed less school absence compared to the control

In the summary, Dr, Korterink JJ, the lead author concluded, "At 1-year follow-up, YT in addition to standard care was superior compared with SMC according to treatment success, PIS, and reduction of school absence".

Surprisingly, the yoga participated program created a self-consciousness between body and mind, by bringing back the presence and dealing with the event positive way, thus improving children's awareness of the symptom and actively seeking help from their physicians.

Contrastively, in further concern of the psychological effect of yoga on functional abdominal pain, Dr. Abbott RA, the led author of the joint study led by the University of Exeter Medical School, in the review of the literature of CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, eight other databases, and two trials registers with 18 randomized controlled trials (14 new to this version), reported in 26 papers, involving 928 children and adolescents with RAP between the ages of 6 and 18 years selected said, "yoga therapy compared to control, we found no evidence of effectiveness on (recurrent) pain intensity reduction post-intervention (SMD -0.31, 95% CI -0.67 to 0.05; Z = 1.69; P = 0.09; 3 studies; 122 children; low-quality evidence)".

Taking it all together, the findings suggested that yoga may be considered as a secondary intervention combined with standard therapy for the treatment of functional abdominal pain, and Yoga intervention may be effective in treating patients with recurrent functional abdominal pain.

#Alliin Moderrates the #ProinflammatoryCytokines Against Diseases Associated with #ChronicInflammation, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural defense of the immune system that protects the body against the invasion of harmful stimuli and pathogens.

In the acute phase of infection, the immune first line of defense white blood cells, macrophages stimulates the production of proinflammatory cytokines with an aim to destroy all invaders which try to enter the body.

Most cases of acute infection are stopped at this phase and the wound is healed quickly.

However, if the wound is too large, then the recovery may take a longer period of time and through 4 overlap recovery stages.

Any interruption in the overlapped recovery stage may cause the formation of scars, similar to those of overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Diseases associated with chronic inflammation induced by protein, lipid, and cellular damage include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neurodegenerative disease,... and cancers.

In other words, prolonged low-grade inflammation caused by continuing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines due to an immune response that can not kill off all invaders in a set period between 3-8 weeks can result in serious and chronic diseases.

The results have been found to cause cell death and alternation of cell DNA.

Believe it or not, people with low-grade chronic inflammation are prone to psychological stress that links to greater risk for depression, and heart disease. particularly the body's ability to regulate the inflammatory response and normal defense.

Out of many risk factors involved in the onset of chronic inflammatory diseases, some researchers suggested the promotion of a high-fat diet in the Western world may correlate to the rise of the condition.

Dr. Yehui Duan, the lead scientist wrote, "In recent years, chronic overnutrition, such as consumption of a high-fat diet (HFD), has been increasingly viewed as a significant modifiable risk factor for diseases such as diabetes and certain types of cancer".

And, "the recent scientific literature about HFD-induced inflammation and subsequent development of diseases and cancer, with an emphasis on mechanisms involved. Given the expanding global epidemic of excessive HFD intake, understanding the impacts of an HFD on these medical conditions, gaining great insights into possible underlying mechanisms, and developing effective therapeutic strategies are of great importance".

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

In the urgency to find a natural and potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with inflammation, researchers examined the active component is alliin (S-allyl cysteine sulfoxide) anti-inflammatory activity.

Before incubated with alliin, lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) stimulated 3T3-L1 adipocytes showed a significant increase in proteins involved in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including IL-6, MCP-1, and Egr-1 in 3T3-L1 adipocytes exposed to 100 ng/mL LPS for 1 hour.

According to the tested assay in lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) stimulated 3T3-L1 adipocytes incubated for 24 h with 100 μmol/L alliin, the bioactive compound inhibited such increase.

Furthermore, the overexpression of the phosphorylation of ERK1/2 associated with cell differentiation including cell death caused by LPS-induced inflammation in adipocytes was also decreased following alliin treatment.

Additionally, alliin prevented the expression of inflammation in facilitating the alternation of cell DNA by modulating the gene expressions involved in immune response such as tumor suppressive genes, and inhibiting the genes related to cancer.

Dr. Saray Quintero-Fabián, the lead scientist wrote, " The present results have shown that alliin is able to suppress the LPS inflammatory signals by generating an anti-inflammatory gene expression profile and by modifying adipocyte metabolic profile".

Taken altogether, alliin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with inflammation, depending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#GreenTea Lowers the incidence of Dementia and CognitiveImpairment, According to Researchers

By Kyle J. Norton

Green tea injection is associated with a reduced risk of age-related cognitive decline, a recent study postulated.
Cognitive impairment is a condition of the decline of memory and thinking skills due to aging considered as an early sign of neurodegenerative diseases.

Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine, or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weaken immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. Adding a piece of ginger will solve the problem.

In a total of 12 elderly nursing home residents with cognitive dysfunction, participants who drink green tea powder 2 g/day for 3 months showed a significantly improved cognitive performance and reduced the progression of cognitive dysfunction indicated by Mini-Mental State Examination Japanese version (MMSE-J) score.

Other studies (Japanese residents aged >60 years from Nakajima, Japan (the Nakajima Project) of 723 participants with normal cognitive function at a baseline survey (2007-2008), 490 completed the follow-up survey in 2011-2013, suggested that the incidence of dementia and cognitive impairment are lower among individuals who consumed green tea 1-6 days per week compared with individuals who did not consume green tea at all.

Additionally, according to the double-blind, randomized controlled study of 39 nursing home residents with cognitive dysfunction (four men, 29 women) divided into two groups either with
consumption of 2 g/day of green tea powder (containing 220.2 mg of catechins) or placebo powder (containing 0.0 mg of catechins), the green tea-treated group showed a significantly reduced cognitive dysfunction in 3 months follow-up compared to placebo.

The efficacy of green tea in decreased progression of cognitive impairment in the short term may be attributed to ameliorated oxidative stress and levels of low-density lipoprotein.

Taking together, Green tea may process the potential in reducing the risk of early onset and progression of cognitive decline in the aging population, but long-term and large amounts of injections should be taken with care.

#Turmeric's #Curcumolide Alleviated Retinal Inflammatory activitie INduced-Diabetic-Retinopathy, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetic renal inflammation is a condition associated with inflammation in the development of diabetic nephropathy.
Diabetic nephropathy (Dn) is a chronic kidney disease in diabetics, a leading cause of end-stage renal failure.

Epidemiologically, diabetic nephropathy is also associated with cardiovascular disease and increases the mortality of diabetic patients.

Metabolic and hemodynamic alterations, oxidative stress, and activation of the renin-angiotensin system are some of the risk factors that have been found in patients with Dn.

Inflammation is a natural defense of the immune system that protects the body against the insult from foreign invasion.

Acute inflammation occurs quickly or within hours and lasts a few days or weeks and the damaged tissues are healed itself after all pathogens are killed off.

However, if the immune system can not completely destroy all invaders in the acute phase of infection, it will compromise, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, a major cause of cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and diabetes.

In diabetes, the presence of chronic low-grade inflammation activated by the innate immune system-induced production of pro-Inflammatory cytokines, mainly IL-1, IL-6, and IL-18, as well as TNF-α, are some of the major factors involved in the development and progression of diabetic nephropathy.

Dr. Juan F. Navarro-González, the lead scientist in the examined the effect of inflammatory cytokines in the risk of Dn wrote, "When considering the role of cytokines in pathophysiological processes underlying disease, it is necessary to take into account the fact that the activities of these molecules are very complex, as reflected by important features, including their pleiotropic actions—and thus a cytokine may trigger several different cellular responses depending on diverse factors, such as cell type, timing, and context".

And, "Cytokines share receptor subunits; act synergistically in many contexts, and, therefore, the association of two cytokines can markedly amplify their effects; cytokines stimulate the cells that produce them, or adjacent cells, or even can intervene through direct cell-cell interaction; and, finally, cytokines induce the expression of other cytokines and cytokine receptors".

In other words, diabetic renal inflammation is the main culprit that causes the development of Dn.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of renal inflammation, researchers examined the effect of Curcumolide, a novel sesquiterpenoid isolated from Curcuma wenyujin for the control of diabetic retinopathy.

According to the experiment results, treatment with curcumolide alleviated retinal inflammatory activities both in vitro and in vivo in an STZ-induced diabetic rat model and in TNF-α-stimulated HUVECs.

Furthermore, curcumolide alleviated retinal vascular permeability by blocking the quality of a material or membrane that causes it to allow liquids or gases to pass through it, and leukostasis that causes elevated blast cell count and symptoms of decreased tissue perfusion in the retinas.

Moreover, curcumolide attenuated the overexpression of TNF-α and ICAM-1associaed with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in diabetic retinas through activation of NF-κB a protein complex and p38 MAPK.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "These data suggest potential treatment strategies against diabetic retinopathy, particularly in the early stages of the disease".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumolide may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of renal inflammation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Ashwagandha Exhinits Anti-#InsulinResistance Activities by Reducing the Production of #InflammatoryCytokines, Researchers say

By Kyle J. Norton

Insulin resistance is a hallmark of type 2 diabetes caused by the inability of the body to use insulin properly to convert glucose to energy in the muscles, body fat, intestine, and liver.

According to the statistics, over 100 million Americans are living with insulin resistance. Approximately 1 in 3, including half of those age 60 and older have a silent blood sugar problem known as insulin resistance.

Insulin resistance is not caused by a single factor. The increase in age, ethnicity, overweight or obese, too much belly fat, physical inactivity, smoking, and certain medical conditions such as Cushing’s disease or polycystic ovary disease are some of the prevalent factors found in patients with the condition.

Epidemiologically, over time, insulin resistance associated with a genetic preposition can reduce the function of the beta cells in the pancreas, leading to the onset of prediabetes and diabetes.

Unmanaged insulin resistance has been found to induce polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia, and weight loss associated with hyperglycemia, particularly in patients with hypertension.

Conventionally, there is no effective treatment for insulin resistance. However, a change of diets such as low-carbohydrate and ketogenic diets or very-low-calorie diets and regular physical activity patients to prevent the risk of obesity may reduce the effects of insulin resistance.

Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound for the treatment of hyperglycemia, researchers examined the effects of Withania somnifera root (WS) on insulin resistance in an animal model.

Selected 48 Wistar-Albino male rats in the study were randomly divided into four groups (n=12); Group I as control, Group II as sham-treated with WS by 62.5mg/g per diet, Group III fructose-fed rats received 10%W/V fructose, and Group IV fructose- and WS-fed rats.

According to the analysis of blood samples collected at the end of the experiment, group III showed a significant increase in the levels of blood glucose, insulin, and homeostasis associated with insulin resistance compared to controls.

Furthermore, levels of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, and TNF-α levels in the blood serum of group III fed by fructose were also increased compared to control.

Expression of TNF-α and IL-6, levels induced inflammation have been found to cause insulin resistance by affecting glucose uptake, epidemiologically.

However, Treatment with WS in group rats fed with fructose demonstrated significant inhibition of increases in glucose, insulin, HOMA-R, IL-6, and TNF-α, the parameters associated with insulin resistance.

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of insulin resistance, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter study.

#Yoga Intervention Improves All Aspects and the Quality of Life of Heart Failure Patients, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Yoga may be considered as an integrated form of exercise in improved cardiovascular endurance, inflammatory expression, flexibility, and quality of life of heart failure patients, some scientists postulated.

Heart failure is a medical condition characterized by insufficiently to maintain blood flow to meet the body's needs, inducing symptoms of shortness of breath, excessive tiredness, and leg swelling.....

Yoga, the ancient technique practice for harmonizing external and internal body well beings, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been best known to people in the Western world and some parts of Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.

In a study of 130 heart failure patients recruited, 65 patients randomly selected to receive 12-week yoga therapy along with standard medical therapy (yoga group). Other patients (n=65) received only standard medical therapy (control group), and researchers showed that
* Yoga group expressed an enormous improvement in a decrease in heart rate, blood pressure, and rate pressure product (RPP), compared to a control group
* All heart rate ratios and variability were improved \compared to the control

Dr. Krishna BH, the lead author said, "Twelve-week yoga therapy significantly improved the parasympathetic activity and decreased the sympathetic activity in heart failure patients."

Truly, yoga mindfulness induced relaxation of the central nervous system in the inhibited production of stress hormone in facilitated production of inflammatory makers through interaction between immune cells-particularly macrophages and lymphocytes, one of a number of markers involved in heart failure disease progression.

Chronic psychological stress is found to have a strong negative influence in heart failure patients as the result of losing the ability to regulate the inflammatory response.

Also, yoga's slow breathing and meditation-induced relaxation of the central nervous system in stimulated the production of nitric oxide NO through an expression of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in relaxed the vessel muscles and heart muscles in regulation dilation and reduced stress hormone in overproduction of prostaglandins E2 in activated muscle constriction, plus improving in heart rate, blood pressure and rate pressure product (RPP).

Furthermore, yoga-selected postures were found not only to improve flexibility but also enhance the functioning lung in optimized oxygen demand of the heart through a circulatory system controlled by homeostatic mechanisms without inducing work overload to the heart, thus increasing peak exercise capacity (peakVO2) in patients with heart failure.

These results suggested that yoga intervention exerted a significant effect of improved cardiovascular endurance in all aspects.

Moreover, yoga mindfulness reconnected and re-balanced the mind and body by bringing back the presence while dealing with a profound and effective way that leads to actively engage in healthy diet and change of lifestyle in participated improvement in functional capacity.

These findings suggested that yoga, as an integrated exercise, has a direct impact in enhancing health and quality of life in patients with heart failure.

The result of the above was supported by the randomized controlled trials, in the review of the literature published on MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Excerpta Medica database, LILACS, Physiotherapy Evidence Database, together with the Scientific Electronic Library Online, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health up to December 2013.

According to the study, compared to the control, researchers indicated that
* Yoga group displayed a significant and positive impact on peak exercise capacity (peakVO2) and quality-of-life (HRQOL)
*Yoga participants also showed an improvement in Weighted mean differences (WMD) (some of the studies make a greater contribution to the average than others and global HRQOL standardized mean differences).
In clarification of the efficacy in treatment for CHF, Dr. Gomes-Neto M, the lead author said, "Yoga enhances peak VO2 and HRQOL in patients with CHF and could be considered for inclusion in cardiac rehabilitation programs".

And, the study of 40 patients (38 AA, 1 Asian, and 1 Caucasian) with systolic or diastolic HF randomized to the yoga group (YG, n = 21) or the control group (CG, n = 19) with all patients followed a home walk program, suggested that yoga group demonstrated a significant improvement of all tested aspects, such as for flexibility (P = 0.012), treadmill time (P = 0.002), VO2peak (P = 0.003), and the biomarkers (IL-6, P = 0.004; CRP, P = 0.016; and EC-SOD, P = 0.012)  compared to control

Taking all together, Yoga therapy may offer additional benefits to the standard medical care of patients with HF by improving cardiovascular endurance, inflammatory markers, flexibility, and quality of life.

#Green tea Intake Daily and the Risk of #CardiovascularDiseases, According to Clinical Trials

By Kyle J. Norton

A recent study conducted by a respectable institute suggested that green tea may have a potential effect on reduced risk and treatment of coronary artery disease.

Coronary artery disease is a condition of narrowing coronary arteries, caused by hardening arterial wall, cholesterol building up in the arteries, leading to blockage of the blood flow in the arteries.

Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine, or food, long-term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "excessive yin syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weakened immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory. Adding a slice of ginger will do the trick of neutralization.

According to the review of literature of a study of 22 healthy volunteers, injection of green tea 7 cups/day exhibited anti-cholesterol effects through modifying the low-density lipoprotein (MDA-LDL) concentrations and decreasing plasma C-reactive protein and interleukin (IL)-6 concentrations involving inflammatory expression.

Green tea consumption of less than 1 cup a day in 725 patients undergoing coronary angiography, is found to associate with a lower risk of myocardial infarction (MI) compared to CVD patients without MI and patients without CAD.

Dr. Ohmori R, the lead author said," Green tea consumption was found to be inversely associated with MI in Japanese patients" and " The protective effect of green tea against atherosclerosis is more likely to be because of the inhibitory effect of LDL oxidation than because of anti-inflammatory effect".

Additionally, the Japanese population with a green tea drinking habit, showed a significantly reduced risk of a decreased incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD), due to the presence of abundant polyphenolic antioxidants.

In a group of comprised 203 patients who underwent coronary angiography (109 patients with significant coronary stenosis and 94 patients without), coronary artery disease (CAD) is associated inversely with the regular green tea drinking group.

The study showed that green tea intake per day was an independent predictor for CVD based on a multivariate logistic regression analysis. but not a predictor of cardiovascular diseases based on the Cox proportional hazard model.

Continuously, in researching the data of PUBMED and EMBASE for studies conducted from 1966 through November 2009 filed the following results:

1. 5 studies on green tea. indicated the lower relative risk is depended significantly between the highest green tea consumption and reduced risk of CVD.
2. The risk of CVD is reduced by 10% for every additional cup of green tea intake.

Taken together, green tea may be used as a functional food for healthy adults with a higher risk of CVD.
However, long-term and large amounts of green tea consumption should be taken with care to prevent toxicity.
