In the review of medical literature published online, green tea major catechin EGCG in reduced risk and treatment may be attributed to a number of mechanisms.

In T24 human bladder cancer cell line, the application of the chemopreventive/antiproliferative potential of (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG, the major phytochemical in green tea) induced anti-malignant cell proliferation by modulating the expression of phosphatidylinositol 3' kinase/Akt in the activating Bcl-2 family proteins with a function in the regulation of cell death, thus enhancing apoptosis of T24 bladder cancer cell line in a dose- and time-dependent manner.

The phosphatidylinositol 3'-kinase/AKT pathway is a crucial regulator of cellular processes including cell proliferation and apoptosis.

Bcl-2 family proteins is a modulator responsible for the regulation of cell apoptosis.

In C3H/HeN mice subcutaneously implanted with MBT-2 murine bladder tumor cells, administration of EGCGs physically attached to the surface of nanogold particles pNG(EGCG-adsorbed pNG) exerted a significant anti-cancer proliferation through induction of apoptosis.

This action of anti-cancer effect was attributed to a mechanism of EGCG-pNG in the activation of caspases which plays an important role in induced cell apoptosis and inflammation through Bcl-family proteins with a function in control apoptosis by activating caspase proteases in governing the space between outer and inner mitochondrial membrane.

Under stress, the mitochondrial pathway or the intrinsic pathway is activated depending on the release of proteins from the intermembrane space of mitochondria.

Caspase cascade, family protease enzymes with function in programmed cell death and inflammation.

Additionally, injecting EGCG-pNG directly into the tumor site inhibited tumor expansion through ameliorated the function of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the stimulated formation of a new blood vessel in provided nutrients and oxygen for the survival of the cancer site compared to
oral administration of EGCG in stimulated immune function in suppression of cancer progression.



The vascular endothelial growth factor is a signal protein produced by cells in the stimulated formation of the blood vessel for cell division and site proliferation.


Based on the information, the prepared EGCG-pNG was more effective than free EGCG in inhibiting bladder tumors in model mice.

More interestingly, bladder tumor induced by N-butyl-(-4-hydroxy butyl) nitrosamine (BBN) 0.05% solution on 8-week-old female C3H/He mice for 14 or 24 weeks on treatment with or without green tea polyphenols (GTP) expressed a significantly lower rate of tumor invasive frequency of 23.8%; in the group treated with both GTP and BBN in compared to 65.2% in the group treated with BBN alone.


The tumor volume and microvascular density (MVD) as an independent predictor within a tumor and the connective, functionally supportive framework of a biological cell, tissue, or organ region in the BBN+GTP group were also significantly lower than in BBN-treated mice.


Unbelievably, green tea polyphenols inhibited tumor growth and invasion in mice with established bladder cancer through regulation of angiogenetic effect on suppressing the forming of the new blood vessel for tumor cells proliferation, metastatic spread, as well as providing oxygen and nutrients and removal of waste products of cancer cells without exhibiting the anti-carcinogenic effect.

Taken together, green tea extract polyphenols may be considered an adjunct therapy for reduced risk and used a combination with standard medicine for the treatment of bladder cancer.

With an aim to find potential and natural chemotherapy for the treatment of laryngeal cancer, researchers examined whether cucurbitacin B can also enhance the sensitivity of Hep-2 laryngeal cells to cisplatin.

The study included the evaluation of the proliferation, cell cycle distribution, and apoptosis in Hep-2 cells treated with either cucurbitacin B, cisplatin, or a combination.

According to the tested results, Hep-2 cells treated with a cucurbitacin B/cisplatin combination display synergistic effects on growth inhibition, cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis induction, compared to single-agent cucurbitacin B or cisplatin-treated cells.
Moreover, Hep-2 cell lines treated with the cucurbitacin B/cisplatin combination demonstrated a significantly reduced level of p-Stat3, compared to single-agent treated cells.

Where overexpression of p-STAT3 is an indication of a poor prognosis biomarker in cancer.


Additionally, cucurbitacin B/cisplatin-treated Hep-2 cells also demonstrated a significant reduction of the protein associated with regulation in the cell cycle and anti-apoptosis, compared to single-agent cucurbitacin B or cisplatin-treated cells.

Based on the results, researchers said, "These results suggest that the cucurbitacin B/cisplatin combination treatment may be a potentially useful therapeutic option for individuals diagnosed with laryngeal cancer".

In order to reveal more information about cucumber's anti-laryngeal cancer properties, scientists evaluated the combined antitumor effect of cucurbitacin B with docetaxel on Hep-2, a human laryngeal cancer cell line.

The combination of cucurbitacin B and docetaxel produced greater efficacy in growth inhibition, cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase, and apoptosis induction similar to those of the aforementioned study compared to single agent treatment.

The efficacy of the combined effect of cucurbitacin B and docetaxel anti-Hep-2 was attributed to the suppression of the expression of proteins involved in tumor proliferation and migration.

In vivo, the combination of cucurbitacin B with docetaxel also synergestively inhibited tumor growth in a mouse xenograft model.

Taken altogether, cucumber processed with a high amount of cucurbitacin B may be considered supplements combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of laryngeal cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of cucurbitacin B in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

In the review of the literature published online, green tea efficacy in the treatment of human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma was expressed in a number of mechanisms.


In esophageal cancer cell lines Eca109 and Ec9706, injection of green tea EGCG plus chemo drug adriamycin (ADM) after 24 hours displayed a significantly increased cellular apoptosis.

In other words, injection of green tea plus ADM was more effective in induced cell death in Eca109/ABCG2 multi-drug resistance cancer cells with expression ROS and ADM in enhanced elevation cytotoxicity activity in compared to ADM treatment alone.

After taking into account other confounders, Dr, Liu L the lead author said, " EGCG inhibited cell growth and induced esophageal cancer cell apoptosis. It reduced the bcl-2 protein expression and increased the bax and caspase-3 protein expression. EGCG reversed multi-drug resistance by reducing ABCG2 expression and increasing the anticancer drug concentration in cancer cells".

In esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, application of Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) without ADM measured by flow cytometry assay after 24 hours also inhibited cancer site proliferation by increased expression of ROS to attenuate mitochondrial membrane potential function in energy metabolism and caspase-3 protein to cause malignant cellular apoptosis, in a dose and time-dependent manner.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient without side effects for the treatment of colon cancer, researchers at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, launch an investigation to examine the anti-tumor and anti-inflammation properties of crude ginger extract and Gelam honey against many types of cancer, including colorectal cancer.

The cells used in the experiment were divided into 4 groups: the first group represents HT29 cells without treatment, the second and third groups were cells treated singly with either ginger or Gelam honey, respectively, and the last group represents cells treated with ginger and Gelam honey combined.

Combined ginger and Gelam honey treatment stimulated the early cell death response by enhancing the function of proteins associated with programming cell death, namely, the caspase 9 and IκB genes, and inhibiting the function of proteins associated with cell proliferation.

The IC50 of ginger and Gelam honey alone were 5.2 mg/ml and 80 mg/ml, respectively also demonstrated similar efficacy as the IC50 of the combination treatment of 3 mg/ml of ginger plus 27 mg/ml of Gelam honey.

These results suggest ginger and Gelam honey used alone or a combination may be an effective chemopreventive and therapeutic strategy for inducing the death of colon cancer cells.

Further differentiation of the antiproliferative effects of ginger and Gelam honey and their efficacy in enhancing the anti-cancer effects of 5-FU (5-fluorouracil) against a colorectal cancer cell line, HCT 116. researchers showed that
* Ginger (IC50 of 3mg/mL) is more potent than Gelam honey (IC50 of 75 mg/mL) in inhibiting the growth of HCT 116 cells.

* Combined treatment (35 mg/mL) of the two compounds (3mg/mL ginger+75 mg/mL Gelam honey) synergistically lowered the IC50 of Gelam honey to 22 mg/mL without reducing the inhibitory effect against colon cancer cell line.

* Gelam honey markedly enhanced 5-FU inhibiting effects on the growth of HCT 116 cells.

Subsequent analysis on the induction of cellular apoptosis also suggested the individual treatment of ginger and Gelam honey produced higher apoptosis compared to 5-FU alone.

These results once against suggested that Gelam honey and ginger extract used alone or combination could potentially enhance the chemotherapeutic effect of 5-FU against colorectal cancer.

Taken altogether, honey used alone or combined with ginger might process significant and profound effects in reducing the risk of colon cancer and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of colon cancer.

However, further data collection large example size and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of honey anti-cancer possibilities.

In endometrial cells, EECs preincubated with NAC/LA/Br, levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines associated with TNF-α were significantly reduced observed by lower expression of the inflammatory "marker" VCAM1.

On human endometriotic cysts intraperitoneally in SCID mice, NAC/LA/Br exerted a strong apoptotic activity against EECs without affecting the endothelial cells isolated from the normal uterus (UtMECs).

Furthermore, compared to untreated mice, mice treated with NAC/LA/Br presented a lower number of cysts, smaller in size.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "These dietary supplements may have potential therapeutic uses in the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases like endometriosis".

Moreover, in order to reveal more information about NAC/LA/Br on symptoms of endometriosis, researchers examined the effect of N-acetyl cysteine, alpha lipoic acid, and bromelain on endometriosis- pelvic pain.

In a total of 398 patients with a mean age of 34.6 ± 7.2 years, treatment of the combination of N-acetyl cysteine, alpha lipoic acid, and bromelain for 6 months showed a significant improvement in endometriosis-associated pelvic pain compared to the baseline.

More precisely, compared to the baseline of 92.7% of the patients had pain intensity > 4 on the visual analog scale (VAS); treatment of NAC/LA/Br at 3 months decreased the percentage of patients to 87.2% (p = 0.074) and at 6 months to 82.7%, respectively.

Dr. Lete I, the lead scientist said, "Women with endometriosis who wish to become pregnant and are treated with a preparation containing N-acetyl cysteine, alpha lipoic acid, and bromelain experienced a significant improvement in endometriosis-associated pelvic pain and required lower intake of rescue analgesics".

Taken altogether, bromelain combined with conventional medicine may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of endometriosis and endometrial symptoms, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.


Intake of bromelain in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Dementia is a medical and neurodegenerative disease characterized by the loss of mental ability, that is severe enough to interfere with people's every life including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease (PD), the most common types of dementia in aging people.

Dementia accounts for 5-8% of all people over the age of 65, and this number doubles every five years.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a type of dementia that affects the nerve cells associated with the production of dopamine in the brain, leading to muscle rigidity, tremors, and changes in speech and gait.

In other words, Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects neurons in transmitting messages in controlling movement.

In the very early stage of PD, patients may not experience any symptoms. However, Parkinson's disease symptoms gradually worsen as the condition progresses.

As of today, researchers do not know why the neurons in the brain in some people are susceptible to gradually breaking down or dying while others do not even if they have similar health conditions and are from the same family.

Epidemiologically aging, gender, long-term exposure to certain toxic chemicals, and genetic deposition are some of the prevalent factors involved in the increased risk of the disease.

Some researchers in the examination of the dietary habits in different parts of the world suggested that people who drink green tea regularly, are less likely to get Parkinson's disease compared to those who don't.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of neurological disease, researchers examined the effects of Curcumin (diferuloylmethane), a polyphenol extracted from the plant Curcuma longa on Parkinson's disease (PD) in an animal model.

According to the 13 studies with a total of 298 animals describing the efficacy of curcumin in animal models of PD were selected by searching the online medical literature,* The majority of the experimental studies suggested that curcumin processes significant neuroprotection for the treatment of PD compared to the control group.
* 5 selected studies indicated that curcumin had an anti-inflammatory effect in the PD animal models.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Most of the preclinical studies demonstrated the positive findings while one study reported that curcumin had no beneficial effects against Mn-induced disruption (induced neurotoxicity) of hippocampal metal and neurotransmitter homeostasis"

And, "The results demonstrated a marked efficacy of curcumin in an experimental model of PD, suggesting curcumin probably a candidate neuroprotective drug for human PD patients".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD), pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
