Long Term #Yoga Intervention is Associated with the Improvement of the Cognitive Function in Patients with Schizophrenia
Epidemiological studies do agree that yoga lessons may reduce symptoms and complications expression in patients with Schizophrenia, a renowned university study suggested.
Schizophrenia is a mental disorder induced by inconsistent or contradictory elements such as the breakdown of certain relations in thought, emotion, and behavior, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate actions,.... and feelings.
The exact causes of schizophrenia are unknown. However, the National Health Service suggested that certain risk factors involving physical, genetic, psychological, and environmental circumstances are associated with the likeliness of a person to develop the condition.
Sadly, researchers do not know, why people with the same health condition, are susceptible to Schizophrenia development while others do not.
Furthermore, stressful or emotional life events might trigger a psychotic episode in patients with Schizophrenia.
Yoga, the accident technique practice for harmonized external and internal body well-being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture..... has been well known for people in the Western world and some parts of Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.
In the clinically stable, adult outpatients with SZ (n=286) completed baseline assessments randomized to treatment as usual (TAU), supervised yoga training with TAU (YT), or supervised physical exercise training with TAU (PE) researchers at the joint study led by the University of Pittsburgh filed the following results
* After six months and follow-up, yoga showed a significant improvement in the speed index of the attention domain compared to control groups.
* In cognitive domains, the yoga group demonstrated a significant improvement compared to PE and TAU alone, respectively
The further assessment also suggested that both YT and PE improved attention and additional cognitive domains well past the training period, but only the YT group showed a beneficial effect on the speed index of the attention domain.
These results of improvement may be attributed to the repeated practice of attentional focus and redirecting attention may be a possible active ingredient for developing greater attentional control
Moreover, the physical and cognitive benefits associated with yoga and mindfulness may be due to mechanisms that activated the parasympathetic nervous system through meditative or contemplative practices.
Some researchers also suggested long-term yoga practice increases body perception, stronger functional connectivity within the basal ganglia, and increased activation of grey matter volume and amygdala with regional enlargement.
Additionally, in the review literature published in the databases of MEDLINE, PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, BIOS, AMED, and PsychINFO involved randomized controlled trials (RCTs) including people with schizophrenia comparing yoga as a package of care with standard-care control, researchers found only 3 studies with all outcomes were short-term (less than eight weeks) with none of them displayed a significant change of yoga group in compared to control.
The findings indicated that short-term yoga practice may have little effect on the improvement of cognitive function.
More importantly, from a patient perspective, in a study of a total of 100 schizophrenia patients (male: female = 57:43; age: 35.8 ± 9.2 years) attending the psychiatry outpatient services of a tertiary neuropsychiatry hospital administered a survey questionnaire, researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences reported the following results
* 46% of participants were aware that yoga is also one of the complementary therapies useful in schizophrenia.
* 32% had tried yoga in the past for some reason, but only 31% of them were continuing yoga with reasons of lack of motivation (31%) and inability to spare time (27.6%).
* However, the majority (88.5%) of them were willing to take up add-on yoga therapy on an outpatient basis along with their regular medical follow-up.
Taken together, long-term yoga lessons may be used as a secondary and therapeutic enhancement of cognitive function in patients with schizophrenia.

#Coffee Processes a Reduced Risk of #EndometrialCancer, Researchers Suggest
By Kyle J. Norton
Intake of caffeinated coffee may have reduced risk and treatment of Endometrial cancer, an Asian joint study supposed.
Coffee, becoming a popular and social beverage worldwide, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
Endometrial cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in endometriosis. In the later stage, cancer can spread to distant parts of tissues or organs.
In the review of published data of a total of 1,534,039 participants from 13 published articles added in this meta-analysis, researchers found that reduced risk of endometrial cancers incidence is associated with coffee intake to patients never treated with any form of hormone therapies and either overweight or obese.
The relative odd ratio in these groups of people were 0.66 and 0.77, respectively, correlated to decaffeinate and caffeine coffee intake.
In fact, the risk of endometrial cancer decreased by 5% for every additional cup of coffee consumed.
In comparison to decaffeinate coffee, caffeinated coffee showed a stronger attenuated risk of 7% instead of 4% in decaffeinated intake,
The study also addressed that caffeine found in coffee may have the potential in enhanced coffee effects in ameliorated endometrial cancer expression. The risk of cancer is reduced by 4% for every 100mg of caffeine intake per day.
In a 26 year follow-up study of 67,470 female participants aged 34 to 59 in 1980 of the Nurses' Health Study (NHS), returned questionnaires by the participants indicated that
1. Women drinking less than 4 cups of coffee per day were not associated with endometrial cancer risk.
2. Women drinking more than 4 cups of coffee per day displayed a 25% decreased risk of endometrial cancer compared to women who drank fewer than 1 cup per day.
Dr. Je Y, the lead author said, "For decaffeinated coffee consumption, a suggestive inverse association was found among women who consumed 2 or more cups per day versus <1 cup/mo."
Interestingly, for the menopause women, the primary analyses included 45,696 women and 427 incident endometrial cancer cases, diagnosed over a total of 342,927 person-years of follow-up, suggesting that
1. No association of endometrial cancer risk in coffee consumption compared to non-daily drinkers (none or <1 cup/day),
2. Women who drank ≥4 cups/day have a relatively odd ratio of 0.86. 0.63, for total coffee 0.89 for caffeinated coffee, and 0.51 (95% CI 0.25, 1.03) for decaf coffee.
3. In obese women, compared to the control group (none or <1 cup/day), women who drank ≥2 cups/day had a relatively odd ratio of 0.72 for total coffee, and 0.66 for caffeinated coffee. and 0.67 decaffeinated coffee drinkers.
Taking together, the intake of coffee is associated with a reduced risk of endometrial cancer in healthy and menopausal women regardless of weight mass.

#Bromelain is Associated with the #Cancer Cells #Apoptosis and #CellDeath in Vitro and Vivo, Researchers Say
Cancer is a class of chronic and medical conditions caused by the alternation of cell DNA.
Most cases of cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of specific tissues and organs.
At the early stage due to the very small size of the tumor, most cancers are asymptomatic. However, at the advanced stage, cancer only can induce general symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomfort, unintended weight loss, fatigue, and loss but also lead to specific symptoms, such as localized bleeding and pain, depending on the location of the cancer.
Also, at this stage, primary cancer cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis through the circulation of blood and fluids.
According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US in 2019, approximately 1,762,450 new cancer cases will be diagnosed and 606,880 deaths as a result of cancer.
Furthermore, from an age perspective, older adults although accounting for only 8% of all cases diagnosed in the US, have a 17% mortality rate compared to other age groups.
The 5 years survival rate is totally depending on the stage of cancer diagnosed. The early diagnosed stage has the highest survival rate compared to other later stages.
Many risk factors such as aging, tobacco, sun exposure, toxic exposure, viruses, and bacteria, use of hormone therapy, family history of cancer, alcohol, poor diet, lack of physical activity, or being overweight have been found to increase the risk of cancer, epidemiologically.
However, most people with some of the aforementioned risk factors have never developed cancer.
Some researchers in the examination of the risk of obesity in risk cancer wrote, "The prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing worldwide, and the evidence base for a link between obesity and cancer is growing... Recent research has found that as the body mass index increases by 5 kg/m2, cancer mortality increases by 10%".
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
The research team at the University of Oxford on finding a potential compound for the treatment of cancer with no side effects examined the bromelain capacity against cancers in past and present studies.
Evidence derived from clinical observations, mouse- and cell-based models suggested that bromelain, a 95%-mixture of proteases acts systemically, affecting multiple cellular and molecular targets.
The most recent study found that bromelain has the capacity to inhibit cell malignancy by modulating the key pathways associated with cell differentiation.
Other studies suggested the anti-cancer activity of bromelain consists of the direct impact on cancer cells and their microenvironment by modulating immune, inflammatory, and hemostatic systems.
Additionally, in the study to reaffirm the use of bromelain (BL) as an anti-cancer phytotherapeutic agent, researchers examined the Oral administration of bromelain (BL) in anti-cancer drugs encapsulated in Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) to formulate nanoparticles (NPs).
NPs enhanced the function of cytotoxicity in the induction of cancer cell death in significant dose advantage (-7-10 folds) that reduces the IC50 values, compared to free BL.
NPs induced cellular uptake of MCF-7, HeLa, and Caco-2 cells monolayer by several folds compared to free BL.
NPs also modulated the expression of marker proteins associated with apoptosis and cell death and suppression (P53, P21, Bcl2, Bax).
Furthermore, in Swiss albino mice, NPs injection not only reduced the tumor burden of Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) but also increased their lifespan (160.0 ± 5.8%) compared to free BL.
In other words, NPs enhanced anti-carcinogenic potential through a number of mechanisms, including the generation of reactive oxygen species, induction of apoptosis, and impaired mitochondrial membrane potential.
Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or encapsulated in Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Dietary Intake of 0.1% #Glucoraphanin (a glucosinolate precursor of #SFN) Found in #Broccoli, Processes Depressant-Like Property
Depression is a common and serious psychological illness, that affects the physical and mental functions of patients, including the patients feeling, thinking, and acting.
Some patients with depression may feel sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed.
There is no exact cause of depression. Changes in hormone levels, medical conditions, stress, grief, or difficult life circumstances that initiate the change of brain chemistry in inducing depressive syndrome are some of the most prevalent factors found in patients with depression.
The most common symptoms of depression include sadness, hopelessness, guilt, change of mood, and loss of interest in friends, family, favorite activities, and sex.
In severe cases, some patients with depression also experience cognitive symptoms of trouble concentrating, making decisions, remembering, and thoughts of harming themselves.
According to the statistics provided by the Anxiety and Depression Association of American, major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15 to 44.3, affecting more than 16.1 million American adults, or about 6.7% of the U.S. population age 18 and older.
Conventionally, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the primary medication for the treatment of depression due to their relatively lower side effects comapred to depressants. Other types of antidepression medication may include serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), typical antidepressants, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
Dr. Steven S. Clevenger and colleagues in examining the role of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in the relapse risk of major depressive disorder wrote, "According to the included studies, the relapse risk in adults was lower when SSRIs were combined with psychotherapy".
And, " the combination of SSRIs and cognitive behavioral therapy may effectively reduce relapse. Escitalopram appeared to yield better results and fewer side effects than did other SSRIs or SNRIs".
In finding a potent compound that processes depressant-like activity, researchers examined the effects of Sulforaphane (SFN), an isothiocyanate compound derived from broccoli on inflammation-related depressive symptoms.
On lipopolysaccharide, (LPS, 0.5 mg/kg) induced depression-like behavior in mice, pretreatment SFN showed a significant effect in the blockage of the increase in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokine (tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)) level and an increase in microglial activation of the brain associated with the inflammatory response by increasing the expression anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10.
Activation of microglia is a hallmark of brain diseases.
In the tail suspension test and forced swimming test, immotility caused by the LPS of the tested mice was also attenuated by the injection of SFN.
Degeneration of cognition in the brain caused by the alternation of the density of the proteins associated with the brain functioning due to the LPS was also restored by the SFN.
More importantly, dietary intake of 0.1% glucoraphanin (a glucosinolate precursor of SFN) food in juveniles and adolescents has been found to prevent the risk of LPS-induced depression-like behaviors and dendritic spine changes in the brain regions in adulthood.
In other words, SFN isolated from the rich broccoli sprout exhibited depressant-like activity that was attributed to the anti-inflammatory property.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "supplementation of SFN-rich broccoli sprout could be a prophylactic vegetable to prevent or minimize the relapse by inflammation in the remission state of depressed patients".
Taken altogether, broccoli sprouts rich in SFN may be considered a functional food for the treatment of depression, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #Turmeric's #Curcuma Aromatica Oil Protects the Kidneys Against #RenalDiseases, Researchers Find
Renal protection is strategies that protect the kidney against injury or damage. In other words, renal protection is a process that maintains the function of the kidneys.
Kidneys, a pair of bean-shaped organ in the human body only filters out blood but also balances body fluids by eliminating them and removing them through urinary secretion.
Depending on the severity of renal damage, patients may experience symptoms of decreased urine output, and fluid retention, that lead to swelling in the legs, ankles, or feet, fatigue, nausea, and physical weakness
In severe cases, patients may also have symptoms of shortness of breath, confusion, and irregular heartbeat.
The worse cases of kidney damage can lead to renal failure, a condition that induces wastes and toxins to accumulate in the blood. In this stage, dialysis and kidney transplant are the only options.
Kidney damage can be classified into 4 different stages
* Stage 1 with normal or high GFR (GFR > 90 mL/min). In this stage of kidney patients are asymptomatic.
* Stage 2 Mild CKD (GFR = 60-89 mL/min), Patients in this stage also experience no symptoms.
*Stage 3A Moderate CKD (GFR = 45-59 mL/min) and 3B moderate CKD (GFR = 30-44 mL/min.
Most patients are asymptomatic. However, some patients may experience symptoms of mild swelling in the hands and feet, back pain, and urinating more or less than normal.
* Stage 4 CKD (GFR = 15-30 mL/min). Most patients in this stage experience more severe symptoms of swelling in the hands and feet, back pain, and urinating more or less than normal, accompanied by other health problems associated with weakened kidney function
* Stage 5 EndStage CKD (GFR <15 mL/min). Patients at this advanced stage are very close to renal failure or renal failure. Symptoms are getting worse.
Where eGFR is short for estimated glomerular filtration rate.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In the urgency to find a potential compound with a kidney protective effect against the side effects of Cisplatin, researchers investigated the protective effect and mechanism of tetrahydrocurcumin on cisplatin-induced kidney damage.
The study included selected rats treated with Tetrahydrocurcumin orally every day at a dose of 80 mg/kg body weight for ten days, and a single dose of cisplatin was administered intraperitoneally (7.5 mg/kg body weight) in 0.9 % saline on day four.
According to the tested assays, Cisplatin-induced renal cell damage was significantly reduced by tetrahydrocurcumin treatment.
Tetrahydrocurcumin also suppressed the cisplatin-treated rat in inducing overexpression of the creatinine clearance levels, an indication of kidney dysfunction.
Proinflammatory protein associated with increased oxidative stress in the kidney caused by cancer medicine was also inhibited by tetrahydrocurcumin administration during the experiment.
After taking into account co and confounders, the researcher wrote, "collectively provide therapeutic evidence that tetrahydrocurcumin ameliorates renal damage by regulating inflammation and apoptosis".
In order to reveal more information about turmeric renal protective activity, researchers evaluated the intervening effects of Curcuma aromatic oil on renal interstitial fibrosis rats induced by unilateral ureteral obstruction.
The study included infected rats treated with Curcuma aromatic oil for 3, 7, 14, and 28 days.
According to the Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabonomics combined with clinical chemistry and histopathology examination, Curcuma aromatic oil demonstrated strong kidney protection by inhibiting some metabolic pathways associated with the onset of renal interstitial fibrosis, including lipids metabolism, glycolysis, and methylamine metabolism,
Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the protection of kidneys, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Yoga Therapy Inproves the Behavioral and Physical Health in Patients with Chronic Inflammatory Diseases, According to Studies
Yoga therapy may have a strong impact in reducing the risk of inflammation by significantly decreasing expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, a US university study suggested.
Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system in the stimulation of the production of inflammatory cytokines to protect our body against infectious agents in the acute phase of bodily injury and tissue damage.
However, in many instances, overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines can cause cell death and tissue damage, leading to irreversible organ damage with large scar formation.
For example, overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the healing of hepatitis virus infection can lead to liver scars.
Furthermore, inflammation that lasts more than 3 months may be considered chronic inflammation, a leading cause of chronic diseases.
Chronic inflammation occurs when the immune system no longer can kill off all the infectious agents, during the onset of acute infection.
Moreover, chronic inflammation also happens in people with autoimmune disorders. In this case, the immune system attacks the bodily normal healthy tissue, by mistaking them for foreign pathogens that cause disease.
Yoga is the ancient technique for harmonizing external and internal body well-being, through breath control, meditation, bodily movement, and gesture.....
The practice has been well-known for people in the Western world and some parts of Asia due to health benefits reported by various respectable institutes' research and supported by health advocates.
In a randomized controlled 3-month trial conducted with two post-treatment assessments of 200 breast cancer survivors assigned to either 12 weeks of 90-minute twice-per-week hatha yoga classes or a wait-list control researchers at The Ohio State University showed that
* Yoga demonstrated significantly reduced proteins in the production of pro-inflammatory expression, namely IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β compared to the control group.
* Inflammation-induced lower levels of energy also reduced such as fatigue and improved vitality after 3 months of engagement but not at the beginning of the class.
Dr. Kiecolt-Glaser JK, the lead author said, "Chronic inflammation may fuel declines in physical function leading to frailty and disability. If yoga dampens or limits both fatigue and inflammation".
Truly, yoga practice calms the central nervous system against the onset of psychological stress which in turn, decrease the production of stress hormones in compromising the immune system.
Yoga practice has a direct impact on the calming of the nervous system, in turn, improves the immune system in the correct differentiation of its response against foreign pathogens. thus, reducing the risk of autoimmune disease and overproduction of inflammatory cytokines in initiating chronic inflammatory diseases.
Other researcher concerned about global obesity prevalence and overexpression of tissue and circulating inflammatory biomolecules in these groups of the population may cause vascular inflammation and atherogenesis, and subsequently, cardiovascular disease developing postulated that yoga-based lifestyle intervention may be used as a promising option,
* In reducing the weight of obesity that decreases the risk of the onset of inflammatory diseases.
* In reducing the risk of chronic diseases as inflammation may be prevented and managed through a change of lifestyle
The study also emphasized that yoga therapy is simple to follow and cost-effective with high compliance. therefore, it may be recommended as a secondary treatment combined with the standard application.
Furthermore, Dr. Sarvottam K, the lead author said, "The efficacy of such lifestyle intervention programs is multifaceted and is achieved via a reduction in weight, obesity-related inflammation on and stress, thereby culminating into risk reduction towards several chronic diseases including CVD".
By bringing back the presence and dealing with it positively, long-term yoga participants may choose to improve immune function through a change of diet and lifestyle to combat chronic inflammatory diseases.
More interestingly, in a proposed study of 16 breast cancer survivors with persistent cancer-related fatigue randomized to a 12-week Iyengar yoga intervention (n=16) or a 12-week health education control condition (n=15), researchers indicated that
* Yoga treatment group expressed a reduced production of pro-inflammatory transcription including, nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), and increased activity of the anti-inflammatory cytokines such as glucocorticoid receptor.... compared to the control.
* All inflammatory markers, such as soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor type II (sTNF-RII) were lower in the yoga therapy group compared to the increase in the educational group.
Dr. Bower JE the lead author opinionated, Yoga participation improved the lower level of energy caused by inflammation-related gene expression in breast cancer survivors with persistent probably through enhancing behavioral and physical health after 12 weeks.
Taking all together, Yoga may be considered an integrated form of exercise in reduced risk and treatment of inflammation-inducing poor behavioral and physical activities.

Squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most common types of oral cancer, accounting for over 90% of all cases and arise from the squamous cell layer in the lining of the oral cavity and oropharynx.
* Verrucous carcinoma
The low grade and rarely spread verrucous carcinoma is uncommon cancer, accounting only to an approximate 5% of all cases, but it can spread deeply into the surrounding tissue.
* Minor salivary gland cancers
The cancer is originated from the salivary gland accounting for less than 1% of all cases.
The grades of oral cancer are depending on the tendency of spreading. Low-grade cancers usually grow more slowly and are less likely to spread while high-grade cancer indicates otherwise.
The most prevalent factors associated with a higher risk of oral cancer are tobacco use including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco, and snuff, among others.
Some researchers suggested that heavy alcohol use is also one of the most common risks of oral cancer.
Dr. Binh Y. Goldstein the lead scientist wrote, "The evidence for the human carcinogenic effects of alcohol drinking on the risk of cancers of the oral cavity and pharynx has been considered sufficient in the IARC Monograph 44 on alcohol and cancer in 1988".
And, "Generally, the dominant type of alcohol consumption in each population is associated with the greatest increases in risk. A large number of studies on joint exposure to alcohol and tobacco consumption demonstrate a more than multiplicative synergistic effect".
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, and wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effect of curcumin found abundantly in turmeric on intracellular copper levels that affect the sensitivity of oral cancer cells.
According to the differentiation of intracellular copper levels and response to curcumin treatment in a panel of OSCC cell lines derived from oral cancer patients, the concentrations that inhibited 50% OSCC cell viability (IC50) of curcumin were reduced up to 5 times in the presence of 250 µM copper.
Furthermore, increased copper levels in curcumin-treated OSCC cells exerted a significant effect in increased levels of intracellular ROS and Nrf2 which regulates oxidative stress responses in the cancer cells.
Moreover, supplemental copper also inhibited the migration of curcumin-treated cells by suppressing epithelial-mesenchymal transition in the promotion of cancer cell metastasis.
Interestingly, early apoptosis in combined treatment is not found in treatment with curcumin or copper alone.
In other words, copper and curcumin work synergistically to induce cancer cell death, compared to no effect in either alone treatment.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Supplement of copper significantly enhanced the inhibitory effect of curcumin treatment on migration and viability of oral cancer cells".
Taken altogether, curcumin found abundantly turmeric may be combined with the copper supplement for the prevention and treatment of oral cancer pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
