Diabetes is a medical condition characterized by the failure of the body to utilize insulin in converting glucose to energy, leading to high levels of glucose in the bloodstream.
Most cases of diabetes are associated with either beta cells of the pancreas died-off or insulin receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.
Diabetic complications in most cases are caused by long-term unmanaged hyperglycemia, a hallmark of diabetes.
Hyperglycemia occurs in diabetics due to uncontrolled diet, skipping diabetes medication, and improper use of insulin injections.
The most common complication of diabetes is associated with the damage of tiny blood vessels that nourish the related organ and tissues, leading to the risk of developing microvascular and macrovascular complications. includes
* Cardiovascular disease
* Nerve damage
* Kidney damage
* Eye damage
* Foot damage
And skin problems
Dr. Waqas Sami, in the evaluation of the effect of diet and type 2 diabetes wrote, "Dietary habits and sedentary lifestyle are the major factors for the rapidly rising incidence of DM among developing countries".
And, "In type 2 diabetics, recently, elevated HbA1c level has also been considered as one of the leading risk factors for developing microvascular and macrovascular complications. Improvement in the elevated HbA1c level can be achieved through diet management; thus, the patients could be prevented from developing diabetes complications".
In other words, by following a healthy diet to normalize the levels of HbA1c level, accompanied by moderate exercise, the risk of diabetic complications can be manageable.
Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.
On finding a potential compound for the prevention of diabetic complications, researchers examined the effect of alliin, the most abundant sulfur compound in garlic antidiabetic complications against glycation.
Where advanced glycation is considered one of the major pathways associated with the development and progression of a number of diabetic complications including nephropathy, retinopathy, and neuropathy.
Based on the results, alliin exerted a significant effect on glucose and methylglyoxal (MG)-induced by glycation of superoxide dismutase (SOD), which leads to decreased antioxidant enzyme activity, fragmentation/cross-linking in fragment ion association with impaired cross-link, and reduced cross-reactivity with anti-SOD antibodies.
Moreover, the expression of glycation of SOD also leads to the formation of AGEs and fibrils.
In other words, alliin offered protection against elevated levels of glucose or MG-induced glycation of SOD.
Additionally, alliin efficacy against the onset of hyperglycemia was comparable with that of quercetin which is reported to be a potent natural inhibitor of glycation.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Alliin has a good antiglycation effect and hence is expected to have therapeutic potential in the prevention of glycation-mediated diabetic complications".
Taken altogether, alliin may be considered a supplement for the prevention of glycation-mediated diabetic complications, depending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of alliin in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Coffee and Coffee #Caffeine Intake May Associate with A Reduced Risk of #OvarianCancer in Healthy Women, Researchers Say
By Kyle J. Norton
Bad news for postmenopausal women coffee lovers, caffeinated coffee may have a positive effect in exhibited risk for epithelial ovarian cancer, a study by a respectable institute proposed.
Coffee, a popular and social beverage worldwide, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
The epithelial ovarian tumor also known as a surface epithelial-stromal tumor, is a result of irregular cell growth on the surface of the ovary. Epithelial ovarian tumor is the most common form of ovarian cancer accounting for over 90% of ovarian cancer of all cases.
According to the University of Minnesota, coffee consumption of more than five cups a day may be associated with an increased risk of ovarian cancer in postmenopausal women.
In evaluating the risk of coffee and caffeine intake against epithelial ovarian cancer in a prospective cohort study of 29,060 postmenopausal women, returned questionnaires from ovarian cancer patients from 1986 to 2004. suggested that the increased risk of epithelial ovarian cancer incidence was found in women who consumed more than 5 cups per day compared to the lesser cup drinkers and non-drinkers.
The study also indicated that decaffeinated coffee and caffeine showed no statistically significantly associated with ovarian cancer incidence.
Others, in the evaluated enzyme CYP1A2 in the metabolism of coffee from the data collected from a preliminary investigation conducted in Hawaii of 164 epithelial ovarian cancer cases and 194 controls, women with CYP1A2 genotype modifies, the results showed that coffee consumption in these populations expressed a substantially increased risk of ovarian cancer compared to women who did not drink regular coffee.
Furthermore, Women with any CYP1A2 C allele and women with the A/A genotype were associated with a similar risk of ovarian cancer (OR = 1.1, 95% CI = 0.7-1.7) but the increased risk of ovarian cancer was stronger among women with the A/A genotype than among women with any C allele.
Dr. Goodman MT, the lead author said., "Preliminary data suggest a modest positive association of caffeine and coffee consumption with the OR for ovarian cancer that may be modified by CYP1A2 genotype and exposures, such as cruciferous vegetable consumption, that influence CYP1A2 expression".
However, according to the Information on coffee consumption collected from 91,767 women at baseline in the Norwegian Women and Cancer Study, coffee intake was found to reduce the risk of various types of cancer, including ovarian cancer, with no statistic different in women who drank more than 3 and up to 7 cups/day, and women who drank ≤1 cup/day.
Taking together, intake of coffee regularly with less than 5 cups per day may be associated with ameliorated risk of ovarian cancer incidence, but women with enzyme CYP1A2 modified and C allele and post-menopause women should consult with their doctor before applying.

#Healthyfood #Onions Intake Regularly Are Asspciated With a Reduced Risk of #ProstateCancer, Researchers Say7
By Kyle J. Norton
The prostate warped around a tube (the urethra) is a gland of the male reproductive system found in front of the rectum and just below the bladder and responsible for making some of the semen that carries sperm.
The prostate gland is considered a reproductive organ in men.
Prostate cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth disorderly in the prostate tissue due to the alternation of DNA.
At the advanced stage, the cancerous cell in the prostate can spread to a distance away to inject other healthy tissue and organ, leading to secondary metastasis through lymph and blood.
Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during physical (rectum) exams.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, approximately 174,650 cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in 2019. Prostate cancer will cause the death of 31620 Americans.
The exact causes of prostate cancer are not known. However, epidemiologically, below are some of the most prevalent factors associated with prostate cancer risk
*Age
The risk of developing prostate cancer increases with the age of over 45
* Family history
Statistics showed that if one of your directed family members has prostate cancer, you are twice at risk to develop it as well.
*Race
Prostate cancer is more likely to strike black and white or Hispanic men in the US.
* Heredity
Certain genes mutation is associated in promoting the growth of prostate cancer, including hereditary prostate cancer gene 1 (HPC1), transmembrane protease, serine 2-ERG or transmembrane protease, serine 2-ETV1/4, etc.
Researchers found that up to 70 percent of men with prostate cancer have lost one copy of the Phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) gene at the time of diagnosis. The tumor protein 53
(p53) mutations are a late event in the pathology of prostate cancer.
* Low levels of vitamin D in the blood
Researchers found that men with a deficiency of level of vitamin D in the blood are at higher risk to develop prostate cancer.
* Excessive drinking
Excessive drinking not only increases the risk of liver cancer but is also associated with a higher risk of prostate cancer as it interferes with folate metabolism. The risk of prostate cancer is much high for men with excessive drinking habits and folate deficiency.
* Enlarged prostate
Men with an enlarged prostate are at high risk of developing prostate cancer.
* Sexual transmission diseases
Infected diseases such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, or syphilis are associated with a higher risk of the diseases.
*Obesity
In a study of Obesity May Raise Risk of Prostate Cancer Spread, Christopher J. Keto, MD, a urological oncology postdoctoral associate at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C. found that overweight men were three times more likely to have their cancer spread.
The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belongings to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.
Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.
With an aim to find a potential compound for the promotion of prostate health, researchers examined the effect of onion on prostate cancer in vivo and in vitro.
According to a population-based case-control study in Shanghai, Hsing et. al. participants in the highest of 3 intake categories of total Allium vegetables, including onion showed a significant effect in reducing the risk of prostate cancer with the relative odds ratio risk of .53 compared to those with the lowest intake.
In the Italian and Swiss case-control networks study, researchers surprisingly showed that participants with the highest intake of both onions do not have significantly decreased OR of prostate cancer compared to those with the lowest intake, However, according to the differentiation, there was evidence of a trend of decreased odds with increasing intake.
In other words, over time, increased intake of onion may have significant activity in reducing prostate cancer risk.
The results strongly suggested, over time, regular consumption may decrease the risk of prostate cancer, depending on the amount of onion intake daily.
Taken altogether, onion used alone or combined with conventional medicine may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of adjuvant rheumatic diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Bilberry Shows the Atheroprotective Activity by Inhibiting the Plaques Accumulation in the Arteries, Researchers Say
By Kyle J. Norton
Atherosclerosis is a condition associated with the accumulated plaque on the arterial wall. Over time the condition can cause stiffening and hardening of the arterial, leading to cardiovascular disease.
Atheroprotection is an action that reduces plaque buildup on the arterial wall. In other words, anything, including the use of substances such as herbal remedy that prevents the blockage or narrowing of the arteries is considered to process atheroprotective effects.
Although plaque is formed by substances found in the bloodstream, most cases of atherosclerosis are also associated with the amount of cholesterol that normally returned to the liver in healthy individuals remaining in the blood due to low levels of good cholesterol (HDL) or overexpression of bad cholesterol (LDL).
In other words, an unhealthy ratio of low and high-density lipoprotein is also one of the major risk factors for atherosclerosis. the healthy ratio of blood cholesterol is any number that is less than 4 (LDL)/ 1 )HDL)
Dr. Ilaria Zanotti, the lead scientist in the investigation of atheroprotective effects of (poly) phenols wrote, "Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that dietary intake of (poly)phenols from nuts, coffee, cocoa, grapes, and berries may protect against the development of atherosclerosis".
And, "... recently emerging data suggest mechanisms by which (poly)phenolic substances can modulate cellular lipid metabolism, thereby mitigating atherosclerotic plaque formation".
The results strongly suggested a healthy diet including nuts, coffee, cocoa, grapes, and berries may have a profound effect on the prevention of atherosclerosis.
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant berry has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
With an aim to find a potent ingredient that processes atheroprotective effects, researchers assessed the results of the intake of bilberry foods associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases from the previous study.
2 bilberry extracts included one rich in anthocyanins extracted from untreated bilberries (BE) and a second one extracted from yeast-fermented bilberries (FBE).
On atherosclerosis induced apolipoprotein E-deficient mice (apo E(-/-)) received for 16 weeks a diet supplemented with 0.02% of either BE or FBE.
According to the measurement of atherosclerotic plaque area, administration of both supplementations bilberry extracts led to significant inhibition of plaque development, without affecting on oxidative stress parameters or lipid profiles.
The results surprisingly suggested bilberry supplement inhibited the atherosclerotic development through other mechanisms unrelated to inflammation and lipoproteins.
Compared to BE, FBE showed better protection against plaque accumulation on the arterial walls.
The finding firmly showed that the fermentation must have generated new bioactive compounds which are found in the BE extracts.
In other words, other compounds found in bilberry fermentation are more effective in attenuating the progression of atherosclerotic lesions.
Taken altogether, bilberry, particularly bilberry fermentation processed abundantly bioactive compounds anthocyanins may be considered function remedies for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#GreenTea's #polyphenol #EGCG Inhibits the Risk of #EndometrialCancer Through Many Mechanisms, Researchers Find
By Kyle J. Norton
Endometrial cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth uncontrollably in the endometrium. At the late stage, the cancerous cell may travel a distance away from the original site to infect other organs and tissues.
In the review of research papers online, the effects of green tea polyphenol (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) in inhibition of endometrial cancer were expressed in various aspects.
In the experiment of green tea bioactive compound against the progression of tumor xenografts of human endometrial cancer, (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate EGCG demonstrated a significant effect in reduced risk of endometrial cancer development through the bioactive chemicals anti-tumor angiogenesis properties.
In fact, the anti-cancer active compound efficacy was attributed to the modulation of expression of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) protein in the established new vessel to stimulate the onset of cancer and cancer cell proliferation and HIF-1 functions in the activated transcription of many genes, in regulated cellular and systemic homeostatic response to external changes to tumor growth.
Furthermore, application of EGCG also suppressed responses of chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 12 (CXCL12) in the expression of multiple physiological processes, in promoted invasion and metastasis of tumor cells in connected tissues of the uterine mucosa (endometrium), thus reducing the infiltration of VEGFA-expressing tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) in supplying rapidly growing malignant tissues with essential nutrients and oxygen.
Additionally, further analysis also insisted that EGCG restricted secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) is initiated endometrial cancer growth by inhibiting the function of PI3K/AKT/mTOR/HIF1α pathway in regulated many cellular processes, including cell survival, proliferation, and growth.
After taking account of all findings, treatment with EGCG reduced the risk of endometrial cancer onset may be a result of EGCG-suppressed secretion in both fronts including decreased cancer cell-secreted VEGFA but inhibited TAM-secreted VEGFA in endometrial cancer progression.
Further differentiation, also showed that green tea polyphenol (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate reduced cancer expansion by suppressing the expression of proliferation markers which acts indirectly to stimulate endometrial epithelial proliferation in estrogen receptor α, progesterone receptor, proliferating cell nuclear antigen, and cyclin D1
The overexpression of cyclin D1 has been linked to the development and progression of cancer.
Proliferating cell nuclear antigen is a protein with function in cell cycle regulation and/or DNA replication and is important for both DNA synthesis and DNA repair.
Importantly, the inhibition of EGCG also decreased the activation of ERK, the extracellular signal-regulated kinases protein in cancer cell division, and the down-expression of transcription factors fos and jun, the cellular immediate-early genes in induced transient cancer cell division and differentiation processes.
The function of EGCG in reduced risk of endometrial cancer is also expressed through Bcl-2-associated X protein, cleavage of caspase-3, and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase actions in the induction of cancer cell apoptosis and suppression of antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2 (B-cell lymphoma 2).
Bcl-2-associated X is a protein with the function of anti- or pro-apoptotic regulators involved in a wide variety of cellular activities.
B-cell lymphoma 2, a family protein with function in the regulation of cell apoptosis.
Cleavage of caspase-3 also is known as a critical executioner of apoptosis,
Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase is a protein with function involved in a number of cellular processes, including programmed cell death.
Implicitly, the application of EGCG also increased the production of free radical expression in initiating the cytotoxicity effect by reduced levels of antioxidant glutathione levels and activated the p38 in cancer cells death without inducing toxicity to normal cells
P38 mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) are activated by a wide range of cellular stresses as well as in response to inflammatory cytokines involved in cell differentiation, apoptosis, and autophagy.
Indeed, according to a systematic review of the literature published on the database of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and China Biological Medicine Database upto February 2, 2015, researchers indicated that green tea consumption was associated with a reduced risk of EC with a relative risk of .78 and each additional cup of green tea consumed per day decreased risk of developing EC by 11%.
Particularly, the intake of green tea associated with attenuated risk of endometrial cancer was 84.33% compared to 5.07 % of black tea.
Taken together, green tea and its polyphenol (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate EGCG may be considered a functional food used in conjunction with standard therapy in reduced risk and treatment of endometrial cancer.

#Coffee Intake< 1 Cup/Day May Associate with A Decreased Risk of #KidneyDiseases in #HealthyWomen, Clinical Trials Suggest
By Kyle JK. Norton
Kidney diseases are medical conditions characterized by the inability of kidneys to filter out wastes from the blood.
Coffee, second to tea consumption is a popular and social beverage worldwide, particularly in the West, made from roasted beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
In the review literature published on databases from MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane from inception until April 2016 to compare the risk of CKD in individuals consuming significant amounts of coffee vs. those who did not drink coffee, the led joint study institute Bassett Medical Center, researchers filed the following results in 4 observational studies involved 14 898 individuals
1. Participants drinking one cup of coffee per day or greater was associated with a reduced risk of kidney disease of RR(relative ratio) of .71
2. In the women subgroup, the relative risk of kidney disease developing was .81
3. In the men subgroup, the RR was 1.10
The findings suggested that there was no significant association between the 2 groups in risk of chronic kidney diseases, without mentioning the risk of kidney disease increased in women drinking over 1 cup of coffee daily and regularly.
Other, in the differentiation of sample size of the population of 151 of autosomal dominant polycystic kidneys disease with a median follow-up of 4 visits per patient and a median follow-up time of 4.38 years researchers indicated that there was no difference in the size of kidneys in coffee drinkers in compared to non-coffee drinkers, even after adjusting to other factors.
Dr. Girardat-Rotar L, the lead researcher said, "Data derived from our prospective longitudinal study do not confirm that drinking coffee is a risk factor for ADPKD progression".
Additionally, a total of 2,673 women aged 35 to 84 years, participated in the Fourth Korea National Health and nutrition examination Surveys, conducted in 2008 with habitual coffee consumption classified into three categories: less than 1 cup per day, 1 cup per day, and 2 or more cups per day against the risk of renal impairment, researchers at the Asian study filed the following results
1. Risk of renal function impairment was higher in women who drank < 1 cup of coffee per day compared to non-drinkers.
2. The relative risk odd of renal impairment from drinking < 1 cup of coffee per day was significantly lower compared to those who habitually drank ≥ 2 cups per day,
3. Risk of renal function impairment was found inversely associated with coffee consumption of≥ 2 cups of coffee per day in only diabetic women compared with consumption of < 1 cup of coffee per day.
The conflict evidence suggested that coffee intake may only benefit healthy women who drink less or 1 cup of coffee per day regularly and daily. Regardless of the outcome, people with kidney deficiency should consult with their doctor's befogging applying.

#Vitexin From the #Cucumber Protects Cell Integrity Against the Alternation of DNA-Induced Cancers, Researchers Find
By Kyle J. Norton
Cancer is a class of diseases associated with irregular cell growth caused by the alternation of cell DNA.
The most common types of cancer in Canada are non-melanoma skin cancer, lung, breast, colorectal, and prostate cancer.
Most cases of primary cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissues of a specific organ.
At the early stage, due to the tumor's small size, most cancer patients are asymptomatic. However, at the advanced stage, all cancers not only share the general symptoms of gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, and fatigue, but they also induce specific symptoms, such as bleeding and severe pain, depending on the location of the tumor.
At this stage, most cancer cells can travel far away to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.
Conventionally, cancer at the localized stage is normally treated with surgery to remove the tumor and radiotherapy to kill off the remaining cancer cells. However, if cancer has spread, a combination of surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy may be necessary.
There are a number of prevalent factors that have been found to increase the risk of cancer. Some researchers suggested the rise of cancer in older adults probably is associated with increased life expectancy over the past few decades.
Dr. Anisimov VN, the scientist on the cancer team at the N.N. Petrov Research Institute of Oncology said, "A significant increase in the number of old people in the populations of developed countries was followed by an increase in morbidity and mortality resulting from main age-related diseases -- cardiovascular, cancer, neurodegenerative, diabetes mellitus, a decrease in resistance to infections".
And, " There was a high positive correlation between the type of geroprotector-induced aging delay and the pattern of tumor development in the same population of animals. The first type of geroprotectors did not influence the incidence of the tumor but increased tumor latency".
The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongings to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.
With an aim to find a potential anti-cancer natural compound with no side effect, researchers examined the cellular function of Pediococcus pentosaceus CRAG3 (GenBank ID: JX679020), a novel isolated from the fermented cucumber.
In vitro,. according to the cytotoxicity analysis, the dextran novel dextran from Pediococcus pentosaceus CRAG3 exerted cytotoxic effects against cervical cancer (HeLa) and colon cancer (HT29) cell lines.
According to the additional differentiation, the efficacy of dextran anticancer activity was attributed to its function in enhancing the growth of macrophages from the immune system.
In heat shock protein Hsp90, indirectly induced multiple pathways that lead to angiogenesis and metastasis in cancer, researchers examined the Vitexin from the Cucurbitaceae family in restraining the angiogenesis activity of this protein.
According to the docking results, Vitexin, a prominent glycosylated natural flavonoid, showed a promising inhibitory potential against Hsp90.
In other words, Vitexin protected the cell integrity against the alternation of cell DNA-induced heat shock protein Hsp90.
Dr. Sharma N, the lead scientist after taking other factors into account wrote, "Vitexin to hold prominent antiangiogenic potential surpassing different in silico parameters and thus expected to be a multi-targeted novel antiangiogenic lead".
Taken altogether, cucumber may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cancer pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of Vitexin in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
