Gastrointestinal cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused by the alternation of cell DNA in the gastrointestinal tract including the esophagus, stomach, biliary system, pancreas, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus.
Most cases of gastrointestinal cancer begin in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the gastrointestinal tissue, before penetrating into the deeper layers.
The most common gastrointestinal cancer is gastric cancer, which is the fourth most commonly occurring cancer in men and the seventh most commonly occurring cancer in women.
According to worldwide statistics, over 1 million new cases were diagnosed in 2018 with the South Korean leading the map, second to Mongolia.
In other words, if you are Asain, you are at an increased risk of gastric cancer.
At the advanced stage, the cancer cell of the affected tissues can travel a distance away to infect the other tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.
Epidemiologically, primary gastrointestinal cancer is more likely to spread to the stomach, esophageal cancer, breast cancer, renal cell carcinoma, and ovarian cancer.
Most common symptoms of gastrointestinal cancer include
* Throw up blood with the color of coffee grounds. if the bleeding cancer is located in the esophagus or stomach
* Black stool if the bleeding cancer is located in the stomach and small intestine.
* Stool red with visible blood if the bleeding cancer is located in the large intestines.
Persistent bleeding to lead anemia due to a large amount of blood loss.
If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms that do heal in a short period of time, you may have gastrointestinal cancer. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.
If the bleeding is slow, it often doesn’t cause the person to throw up blood or have a change in their stool. Over time, though, slow bleeding can lead to a low red blood cell count, and make a person feel tired and weak.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient against gastrointestinal cancer, researchers examined the effects of bromelain and N-acetylcysteine, the two natural agents of anti-cancer effects.
In gastrointestinal cancer models to cisplatin, paclitaxel, 5-fluorouracil, and vincristine, a combination of bromelain and N-acetylcysteine with chemotherapeutic agents could give rise to an improved chemotherapeutic index.
In other words, chemo drugs used combined with bromelain and N-acetylcysteine are more effective in the inhibition of gastrointestinal cancer with lesser toxicity.
Furthermore, combined with bromelain and N-acetylcysteine also reduced the doses of chemo drugs used with the same efficacy.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "This represents a potentially efficacious strategy for the enhancement of microscopic cytoreduction".
Moreover, in the examination of the effects of bromelain (BR) and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on MUC2 and MUC5AC which have been found to significantly contribute to the biology and pathogenesis of mucin-secreting gastrointestinal tumors, researchers found that in vitro (MKN45, KATOIII, and LS174T cell lines) and in vivo (female nude mice bearing intraperitoneal MKN45 and LS174T), a combination of BR and NAC with dual effects on growth and mucin products of mucin-expressing tumor cells.
More precisely, the treatment of the combination of BR and NAC protected the gastric cells against malignancies with the involvement of mucin pathology.
Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Tualang Honey Intake Show a Significantly Fewer Gastrointestinal Complications in Underwent Chemotherapy in Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) Patients.
By Kyle J. Norton
Leukemia is a chronic and medical condition of the body's blood-forming tissues including the bone marrow characterized by high numbers of abnormal white blood cells.
Most cases of leukemia start on the cells in the tissues of bone marrow.
Bone marrow is a semi-solid tissue found within the spongy or cancellous portions of the bones.
In the stage system, patients with leukemia are classified into 5 different stages depending on the levels of abnormal white blood cells. treatment of leukemia is also depended on the size of the tumor and the grade of metastasis.
According to the statistic, in the US, approximately 170,000 people will be diagnosed with a form of blood cancer in 2018. In other words, every 3 minutes, a person in the US is diagnosed with blood cancer.
The 5-year of survival rate of the patient with leukemia is totally depending on the type.
Patients diagnosed with chronic myeloid (or myelogenous) leukemia (CML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), acute myeloid (or myelogenous) leukemia (AML), and acute lymphocytic (or lymphoblastic) leukemia (ALL) have the 5 years survival rate of 68%, 86%, 274.% and 715 respectively.
However, in children diagnosed with acute lymphocytic (or lymphoblastic) leukemia (ALL), the 5 years survival rate is significantly higher. Children and adolescents between 5 - 15 years of age, and younger than 5 years of age have a rate of 91.8% and 94%, respectively.
Researchers do not know the exact causes of leukemia.
Certain risk factors such as long-term exposure to radioactive such as radio and chemotherapy and smoking, inhaling Benzene and Formaldehyde, and genetic preposition are associated with the increased risk of cancer.
D,. Fircanis S, the lead scientist in the cancer tram at The Miriam Hospital in examining the risk of leukemia in long-term smokers said, "Current and ever smokers have 40% (RR 1.40, 95% CI 1.22-1.60; P < 0.001) and 25% (RR 1.25, 95% CI 1.15-1.36; P < 0.001) increased risk of developing AML when compared with non-smokers" and "Intensity of smoking of <10, 10-20, 20-30, and >30 cigarettes per day was associated with RRs of AML of 1.27, 1.36, 1.55, and 1.77, respectively (P < 0.001 for trend). Duration of smoking of <20 and >20 years was associated with RRs of 1.07 and 1.44, respectively (P < 0.001 for trend)".
These results clearly suggested that the risk of leukemia is increased substantially and linearly to the years of smoking and the number of cigarettes smoked daily
Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The rich golden liquid is considered one healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener.
With an aim to find a natural whole food for the treatment of leukemia, scientists at the joint study led by the Mashhad University of Medical Sciences investigate the effects of the dietary combination of honey and Ardeh on chemotherapy-induced complications in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
The double-blind randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial included a total of 107 AML patients who underwent chemotherapy for at least 30 consecutive days in Imam Reza and Ghaem teaching hospitals (Mashhad, Iran).
The treatment group was given a combination of 50 grams of honey and 150 grams of Ardehwas added to the treated group's diet for 30 consecutive days, three times each day; while the untreated group received their regular diet.
After one month, both groups were examined and lab tests were taken by an internist and laboratory technicians.
The treatment group showed a reduction in symptoms of fever compared to the untreated group.
Patients who were given the special honey and Ardeh compound also showed significantly fewer gastrointestinal complications, compared to the untreated group with no side effects.
Further analysis of the treatment group, researchers said, "(honey and Ardeh compound) ameliorate gastrointestinal complications and reduce fever and neutropenia in AML patients
These results indicated that Honey and Ardeh, the easily accessible materials can be used to attenuate symptoms caused by chemotherapy in AML patients.
Additionally, in the joint study led by the Universiti Sains Malaysia to evaluate the antileukemic effect of Tualang Honey on acute and chronic leukemia cell lines, researchers showed that leukemia cell lines (K562 and MV4-11) and human mononuclear cells incubated with increasing concentrations of Tualang Honey display the presence of cell depredation followed by apoptotic bodies.
More precisely, the application of Tualang honey induced 53.9% and 50.6% apoptosis on K562 and MV4-11, respectively, and 37.4% on the human mononuclear cell.
Taken altogether, Tualang honey used alone, and common honey combined with Ardeh may be used for the prevention and adjunct therapies combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of leukemia

High #Onion Intake Daily Is Associated with Improved Quantitative #InsulinSensitivity and Controls on #Cpeptide, Researchers Say
By Kyle J. Norton
Insulin Resistance is a hallmark of diabetes characterized by the inability of the body to use the insulin produced by the pancreas properly.
In other words, signals sent out by the hormone insulin was ignored by the cell of the muscles, body fat, and liver that process the function to convert glucose into energy.
Epidemiologically, people with insulin resistance are associated with an increased risk of prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, and chronic conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, and cancer.
Most cases of insulin resistance in the Western world are involved in clogged-up insulin receptors.
As the signals of the hormone insulin are blocked, insulin resistance develops, leading to more production of insulin by the body.
Over time insulin resistance leads to damage of the beta cell in the pancreas, an early condition of prediabetes and types 2 diabetes.
According to US statistics, approximately, 60 to 70 million individuals are affected by insulin resistance with 40% of individuals older than 50 years may be at risk for insulin resistance.
The most common risk factors associated with insulin resistance are obesity and hypertension. However, some researchers suggested that the rise of insulin resistance in the US may be correlated to the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades.
Dr. Merat S, the lead scientist wrote, " Contrary to expectation, IR was induced in mice fed the Western diet,,,. The Western diet group had higher average glucose levels (187+/-16 versus 159+/-12 mg/dL) and 4.5-fold higher plasma insulin levels".
The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation to garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.
Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.
With an aim to find a potential and natural compound for the prevention and treatment of insulin resistance, researchers examined the effects of red onions and low doses of the flavonoid, quercetin, increase insulin sensitivity and improve glucose tolerance on an animal model.
The study included a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity and insulin resistance in C57BL/6J mice that were randomly assigned into groups, fed either a low-fat diet (LF), HFD (HF), HFD + quercetin (HF + Q), or HFD + RO (HF + RO) for 9 weeks.
According to the tested assays, quercetin and RO supplementation decreased HFD-induced fat mass accumulation and insulin resistance (measured by insulin tolerance test) and increased energy expenditure.
Comapred to the RO group, HF + Q showed an increase in physical activity levels.
Furthermore, quercetin and RO similarly increased skeletal muscle mitochondrial numbers associated with insulin sensitivity and decreased beta-oxidation, a metabolic process involving multiple steps by which fatty acid molecules are broken down to produce energy.
In other words, quercetin- and RO-induced improvements in insulin resistance, and energy expenditure through differential mechanisms as mentioned above.
In countering doxorubicin-induced insulin resistance in breast cancer treatment,
researchers investigated the onion effect on 56 eligible BC patients (aged 30-63 years), diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma.
The intervention of a parallel-design, randomized, triple-blind, controlled clinical trial included subjects assigned in a stratified-random allocation to receive body mass index-dependent 100 to 160 g/d of onion as high onion group (HO; n = 28) or 30 to 40 g/d small onions in low onion group (LO; n = 28) for 8 weeks intervention, following their second cycle of chemotherapy.
In 23 cases complete the study in both groups
* The daily use of HO demonstrated a significant decrease in serum fasting blood glucose and insulin levels compared to LO, over the period of study.
* Posttreatment with HO showed a significant decrease in the homeostasis model of assessment-insulin resistance relative to changes in the LO group.
* Compared to the pre-and postdose treatments, HO improved quantitative insulin sensitivity and controls on C-peptide in a dose-dependent manner.
Taken altogether, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of insulin resistance, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Coffee and #CoffeeCaffeine Expressed a Significant Inverse Relationship Between #MultipleSclerosis (MS) Risk, Clinical Trials Suggest
By Kyle J. Norton
Good news for coffee loves, high consumption of coffee is associated with decreased risk and progression of Multiple Sclerosis through the neuroprotective properties of caffeine, a recent study suggested.
Coffee, second to green tea is one of the most popular and social beverages all over the world, particularly in the West, made from roasted beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neuro disease associated with the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system), caused by the immune system attacking the protective sheath.
According to the Swedish study comprising 1620 cases and 2788 controls, and a US study comprising 1159 cases and 1172 controls), participants with different habits of coffee consumption based on retrospective data collection, returned questionnaire from participants showed a significantly reduced risk of MS developing for those consuming coffee exceeding 900 mL daily with a relative odd ratio of 0.69 in the Swedish study.
The risk of MS reduced was correlated to cups of coffee consumed daily, regardless of coffee consumption duration prior to disease onset. For every additional intake, the risk of MS is decreased proportionally.
In the animal model, researchers found that the efficacy of coffee in the attenuated risk of MS development may be attributed to the presence of the ingredient of caffeine activity in suppressed production of proinflammatory cytokines.
Additionally, in the investigation of a cross-sectional survey amongst 1372 individuals with MS, registered by the Flemish MS Society in Belgium, coffee drinkers showed an improvement of the walk for a distance of 100 m with a cane observed by the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), compared to those who never consumed coffee.
Dr. D'hooghe MB, the lead author said, "Consumption of...... coffee .......were inversely associated with progression of disability in relapsing onset MS, but not in progressive onset MS".
Other, in a study of dietary intake of 75 women with relapsing/remitting MS (RRMS) and 75 healthy controls conducted by the Shefa Neuroscience Research Center, to support coffee caffeine in reduced risk of MS proposed that a food frequency questionnaire consisting of 168 food items returned by participants expressed a significant inverse relationship between MS risk and coffee consumption.
The findings reconfirmed that the intake of coffee caffeine in high amount, regardless of the number of years of consumption, is associated with a reduced risk of MS developing and ameliorating the progression of the disease.

#Phytochemical #Betacyanins In the Induction of Cytotoxicity Against Bladder Cancer Cells in Vitros
By Kyle J. Norton
The bladder is a hollow elastic organ in the center of the lower abdomen that collects urine from the kidneys and excreted them through the urethra.
Bladder cancer is the most common type of cancer that affects men twice as frequently as it affects women. Usually, bladder cancer starts from cells on the surface of the inner lining of the bladder caused by several types of malignant growths of the urinary bladder cells.
Depending on the cancer cell originated bladder cancer can be classified into
* Transitional cell carcinoma
Transitional cell carcinoma starts on the innermost tissue layer of the bladder. More than 90 percent of bladder cancers begin in the transitional cells
* Squamous cell carcinoma
Cancer begins in squamous cells found in the tissues of the surface of the bladder, due to long-term infection or irritation. About 8 percent of people with bladder cancers begin with squamous cells.
* Adenocarcinoma
Cancer begins originates in glandular tissue of the bladder, including the surface layer of skin, glands, and a variety of other tissue, due to long-term irritation and inflammation. Only 2 percent of people with the condition have a third bladder cancer type.
According to the statistics, most cases (90%) of bladder cancer are diagnosed in people older than 55, and the average age people are diagnosed with bladder cancer is 73 worldwide.
Believe it or not, bladder cancer will cause the death of 12,870 in men and 4,800 in women. Among men, bladder cancer is the eighth most common cause of cancer death.
Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.
With the aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of bladder cancer, researchers examined the effect of betacyanins (BC) purified from beetroot (Beta vulgaris var. Rubra L.) alone or in combination with vitexin-2-O-xyloside (XVX) from Beta vulgaris var. cicla L.on T24 bladder cancer cells.
According to the tested differentiation, the combination of BC and XVX exhibited a synergistic effect on the inhibition of proliferation in T24 cancer cells at 24 and 48 h but not after 72 h of incubation.
Furthermore, according to the observation of the means of fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) analysis, the combined treatment induced cancer cell apoptosis by activating the protein associated with cell death signaling.
In cell death analysis, the combination promoted the expression of genes involved in pro-apoptosis and inhibited the genes associated with anti-apoptosis in bladder cancer cell lines.
Moreover, the combined treatment also demonstrated strong activity in the induction of cytotoxicity against bladder cancer cells without affecting the normal human skin NCTC 2544 keratinocytes.
Based on the finding, Dr. Emanuele Salvatore Scarpa, the lead scientist wrote, "These results demonstrated the efficacy and the mechanisms of the action of BC and XVX, extracted from edible plants, and suggested that a diet or a nutrition supplement, enriched with these bioactive molecules, could be used in the prevention of human bladder cancer".
Taken altogether, betacyanins used alone or combined with herbal remedies may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of bladder cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of betacyanins in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #TurmericExtracts Process #Multiple Therapeutic Activities Against #RenalToxicity, According to Studies
By Kyle J. Norton
Renal toxicity or nephrotoxicity in most cases is toxicity in the kidneys caused by toxic chemicals and medications.
The kidneys, a pair of bean-shaped organs on either side of your spine are the second detoxed organ after liver by removing wastes or toxins in the blood that come from the normal breakdown of active muscle and from the food you eat.
The most common symptoms of renal toxicity may cause reduced kidney function in eliminating toxins, leading to a reduced amount of urine. swelling of your legs, ankles, and feet from the retention of fluids.
In a serious case, the condition can also result in unexplained shortness of breath. excessive drowsiness or fatigue. persistent nausea. confusion. pain or pressure in your chest.
Kidney diseases can be classified into 2 types
* Acute kidney disease is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage associated with reduced kidney function in keeping the right balance of fluid in the body, that lasts a few hours or a few days.
* Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a condition of kidney damage, leading to a decreased level of kidney function that lasts more than three months.
Depending on the severity of kidney damage, kidney disease can range from mild to severe, including kidney failure.
Conventionally, most cases of the renal toxicity are treated with cisplatin often associated with an acute kidney injury. Long-term intake of the aforementioned drugs has been found to elevate the risk of nausea and vomiting, kidney toxicity, hearing loss, ringing in the ears, particularly blood abnormalities of low levels of magnesium, calcium, and potassium.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
On finding a natural compound for the treatment of renal toxicity scientists investigated the nephroprotective effect of essential oils from Nigeria ginger and turmeric rhizomes in cadmium-treated rats.
Injection of essential oils from ginger and turmeric rhizomes exerted a significant anti-inflammatory effect by preventing alterations of renal function markers induced by cadmium.
Futhermore, the combination also inhibited the levels of cytokines such as IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-Alpha) levels in Cd-treated rats.
Moreover, renal adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity. in Cd-treated rats also decreased by the injection of the combined essential oils from ginger and turmeric rhizome.
Based on the finding, researchers write in the final report, "inhibition of ADA activity and modulation of inflammatory cytokines could be suggested as the possible mechanism of action by which essential oils from ginger and turmeric rhizomes exert their nephroprotective activities".
Furthermore, in 1,350 participants selected to the study were randomly divided into either curry intake group with the consumption of a curry dish more than once a month over the previous year, or a non-curry intake group (n = 747), researchers found that according to the heavy metal analysis, the curry intake group showed significantly lower heavy metal blood concentrations (Pb, Hg, and Cd).
However, the levels of heavy metals in the patients with hypertension were significantly lower in the curry intake group compared to the non hypertension group.
The levels of blood concentrations of heavy metals induced toxicity associated with the induction of hypertension were significantly lower compared to the placebo.
In other words, turmeric has a potential effect on reducing renal toxicity.
In order to obtain more information about turmeric detoxed activity, researchers examined the protective effect of turmeric extract against doxorubicin (DOX)-induced cardiac toxicity in rats.
According to the tested assays, turmeric extract exerted multiple therapeutic activities that ameliorative the effect against DOX-induced nephrosis.
Additionally, turmeric extract inhibited the DOX-induced increase in plasma creatine kinase (CK) associated with the increased risk of kidney disease.
Dr. Mohamad RH, the lead scientist said, "The present findings conclude that the turmeric extract has multiple therapeutic activities that block the renal.....toxicities".
Taken altogether, turmeric processed with a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered a supplement for the prevention of kidney toxicity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Turmeric Shows a Significant Effect in Lowering High Blood Pressure in Vivos, Researchers Find
By Kyle J. Norton
High blood pressure or hypertension is a condition of abnormally high blood pressure in the arteries. Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.
High blood pressure is also a condition in the cluster of metabolic syndrome associated with the increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), and diabetes.
Depending on the levels of blood pressure, most patients with high blood pressure are asymptomatic, However, long-term very high blood pressure has been found to induce dizziness and light head, shortness of breath, nosebleeds, flushing, chest pain, and visual changes.
Some medical conditions such as kidney disease and long-term stress are associated with high blood pressure.
According to the American Hypertension Association, long-term untreated high blood pressure can induce complications that reduce or obstruct the function of the heart and blood vessels, leading to heart attack, stroke, and heart failure.
Conventional hypertensive medications have undoubtedly prevented many deaths from heart disease in the past 30 years, but they have many side effects.
If you currently taking hypertensive medicine, please make sure you know all the side effects of the preventive measure.
Some researchers also found that excessive energy intake and obesity are major causes of hypertension.
Dr. Savica V, the lead author in the study "The effect of nutrition on blood pressure" wrote, "Obesity is associated with increased activity of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone and sympathetic nervous systems, possibly other mineralocorticoid activity, insulin resistance, salt-sensitive hypertension, and excess salt intake, and reduced kidney function. High sodium chloride intake strongly predisposes to hypertension".
And, "Increased alcohol consumption may acutely elevate blood pressure. High intakes of potassium, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and protein, along with exercise and possibly vitamin D, may reduce blood pressure".
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, and wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
To find a potential compound for the treatment of high blood pressure, researchers examined the effects of ginger (Zingiber officinale) and turmeric (Curcuma longa) on a hypertensive animal model.
Selected rats induced hypertension by oral administration of Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride, 40 mg/kg body weight to the study were divided into seven groups (n = 10).
* groups 1-3 included normotensive control rats, hypertensive (Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride) rats, and hypertensive control rats treated with atenolol (an antihypertensive drug).
* Groups 4 and 5 included normotensive and hypertensive (Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride) rats treated with 4 % supplementation of turmeric, respectively.
* Groups 6 and 7 included normotensive and hypertensive rats treated with 4 % supplementation of ginger, respectively.
During the experiment, researchers found that Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride hypertensive rats showed a significant increase in ATP and ADP hydrolysis, adenosine deaminase involved in purine metabolism, and acetylcholinesterase involved in the regulation of blood vessel tone compared to the control rats.
In other words, the injection of Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride causes the increase of enzymes associated with the constriction of blood vessel tone, blocking the blood vessel dilatation and blood flow through the coronary blood vessels.
Furthermore, Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride rats also demonstrated an elevated production of the pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1 and - 6, interferon-γ, and tumor necrosis factor-α) and reduced levels of an anti-inflammatory cytokine such as interleukin-10, a leading cause of the increase of arterial stiffness and risk of CVD.
Moreover, increased butyrylcholinesterase activity associated with chronic inflammation was also found in the Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride rats.
However, all parameters caused by the injection of Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride involved in the onset of hypertension were totally inhibited by the application of ginger (Zingiber officinale) and turmeric (Curcuma longa).
Based on the findings, researchers said, "These activities could suggest a possible insight about the protective mechanisms of the rhizomes against hypertension-related inflammation."
Taken altogether, turmeric used alone or in combination with ginger may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
