The cardiac muscle or heart muscle or myocardium is a type of muscle that helps the heart to pump blood to nourish the entire body by performing coordinated contractions.
Damage of the heart muscle can lead to cardiomyopathy, or heart muscle disease, leading to abnormally heart enlarged, thickened, and/or stiffened.
In other words, cardiomyopathy reduced the heart muscle's ability to pump blood, causing heart failure and the backup of blood into the lungs or the rest of the body.
The most common types of cardiomyopathy are
* Dilated cardiomyopathy is a condition caused by the enlarged and weakened left ventricle.
* Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a result of the thickening of the heart muscle, at the septum between the ventricles, below the aortic valve.
* Ischemic cardiomyopathy is a condition caused by narrow arteries that affect the supply of blood to the heart muscle.
* Restrictive cardiomyopathy is a condition that the walls of the lower chambers of the ventricles are too rigid to expand
The most common symptoms of cardiomyopathy are associated with reduced blood flow due to reduced function of the heart muscle including general weakness and fatigue, shortness of breath, particularly during exertion or exercise, lightheadedness, dizziness, chest pain, heart palpitations, fainting attacks, high blood pressure, edema, or swelling, of your feet, ankles, and legs.
If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of cardiomyopathy.
Out of many factors associated with the risk of cardiomyopathy, some researchers suggested that long-term alcoholism may be the major culprit.
Dr. B. Maisch wrote, " Moderate drinking can reduce the incidence and mortality of coronary artery disease, heart failure, diabetes, ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke".
However, "More than this amount can lead to alcoholic cardiomyopathy, which is defined as alcohol toxicity to the heart muscle itself by ethanol and its metabolites".
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the improvement of cardiovascular circulation, researchers examined the effect of bromelain on ischemia/reperfusion (IR) injury is characterized by the production of oxygen-free radicals leading to disturbances in vasomotility (microvascular constriction) and microvascular permeability (interstitial edema formation).
The study included a rabbit hindlimb model of I/R (2.5/2 h) were given Phlogenzym, containing rutin, trypsin, and bromelain enterally (60 mg/kg body weight) 30 min prior to ischemia (Ph group).
Before treatment with Phlogenzym, two hours after reperfusion, potassium levels were significantly elevated in IR compared to the Ph group.
Application of Phlogenzym inhibited the enhanced lipid peroxidation, apparent by increased plasma malondialdehyde levels in the Ph group, particularly, in the reduction of blood flow.
Furthermore, Phlogenzym treatment also prevented microvascular constriction and mollified interstitial edema
In other words, Phlogenzym protects the cardiac muscle in blood circulation against damage caused by ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Phlogenzym had a protective effect on skeletal muscle during I/R injury expressed by prevention of no-reflow and preservation of muscle tissue".
Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with conventional medicine may be considered a remedy for the protection of heart muscle, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Coffee and #CoffeeCaffeine Intake Are Associated withReduced Risk of #HepaticFibrosis, Researchers Find
By Kyle J. Norton
Intake of coffee daily and regularly may be considered as a functional beverage in reduced risk and treatment of liver fibrosis, a renowned institute study suggested.
Hepatic fibrosis is a condition characterized by overly exuberant wound healing causing excessive connective tissue builds up in the liver.
Coffee, the best popular and social beverage worldwide, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted beans from the coffee plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
In the examine 910 patients with chronic HCV infection, 98% male and 38% with advanced hepatic fibrosis, researchers filed the following results
1. Intake of coffee is lower in the control group compared with advanced fibrosis
2. But caffeine intake of higher than 100 mg or more, daily from all sources was found in controls (66.0%) than patients with advanced fibrosis (57.9%)
3. Caffeine intake of controls mostly comes from coffee intake
4. Intake of average daily intake of 100 mg or more of caffeine (adjusted odds ratio, 0.71; 95% confidence interval, 0.53-0.95; P = .020) was associated with an increased liver protective effect.
The result demonstrated that moderate coffee and coffee caffeine intake of 100 mg may have a protective benefit against the risk of advanced hepatic fibrosis.
Additionally, in the study, using a food-frequency instrument for dietary caffeine consumption to evaluate the relationship between caffeine intake and liver fibrosis in patients undergoing liver biopsy completed a detailed caffeine questionnaire on three occasions over a 6-month period, researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), reported the results as follow
1. Daily caffeine consumption of 308 mg = approximately 2.25 cups of coffee equivalents was associated with reduced liver fibrosis
2. The protective association persisted without changing even after taking into account other factors,
3. In comparison to coffee caffeine, other sources of caffeine showed insignificant effects in decreased risk of liver fibrosis.
After making the adjustment from all sources, Dr. Modi AA, the lead author said," A reliable tool for measurement of caffeine consumption demonstrated that caffeine consumption, particularly from regular coffee, above a threshold of approximately 2 coffee-cup equivalents per day, was associated with less severe hepatic fibrosis."
Promisingly, in the study of chronic HBV-infected patients who underwent transient elastography examination in 2006-2008, a questionnaire was returned from among 1045 patients, 216 (20.7%) patients with advanced fibrosis., researchers also found similar results compared to other studies as follows
1. The percentage of patients who drank ≥ 1 cup of coffee had advanced fibrosis was 95 (19.0%), compared with 1.21 (22.2%) patients who drank < 1 cup (P = 0.21).
2. Caffeine intake does not affect liver stiffness in chronic HBV-infected patients compared to coffee intake
Taking together, there is no doubt that coffee intake may have a profound effect on the ameliorated risk of hepatic fibrosis and advanced hepatic fibrosis regardless amount of intake daily.

#Antioxidants #Alliin Inhibits Disease Associated with Chronic #Inflammation That Induces Alternation of Cell DNA, Researchers Say
By Kyle J. Norton
Inflammation is a natural defense of the immune system that protects the body against the invasion of harmful stimuli and pathogens.
In the acute phase of infection, the immune first line of defense white blood cells, macrophages stimulates the production of proinflammatory cytokines with an aim to destroy all invaders which try to enter the body.
Most cases of acute infection are stopped at this phase and the wound is healed itself quickly.
However, if the wound is too large, then the recovery may take a longer period of time and through 4 overlap recovery stages.
Any interruption in the overlapped recovery stage may cause the formation of scars, similar to those of overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
Diseases associated with chronic inflammation induced by protein, lipid, and cellular damage include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neurodegenerative disease,... and cancers.
In other words, prolonged low-grade inflammation caused by continuing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines due to an immune response that can not kill off all invaders in a set period between 3-8 weeks can result in serious and chronic diseases.
The results have been found to cause cell death and alternation of cell DNA.
Believe it or not, people with low-grade chronic inflammation are prone to psychological stress that links to a greater risk for depression, and heart disease. particularly the body's ability to regulate the inflammatory response and normal defense.
Out of many risk factors involved in the onset of chronic inflammatory diseases, some researchers suggested the promotion of a high-fat diet in the Western world may correlate to the rise of the condition.
Dr. Yehui Duan, the lead scientist wrote, "In recent years, chronic overnutrition, such as consumption of a high-fat diet (HFD), has been increasingly viewed as a significant modifiable risk factor for diseases such as diabetes and certain types of cancer".
And, "the recent scientific literature about HFD-induced inflammation and subsequent development of diseases and cancer, with an emphasis on mechanisms involved. Given the expanding global epidemic of excessive HFD intake, understanding the impacts of an HFD on these medical conditions, gaining great insights into possible underlying mechanisms, and developing effective therapeutic strategies are of great importance".
Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.
In the urgency to find a natural and potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with inflammation, researchers examined the active component is alliin (S-allyl cysteine sulfoxide) anti-inflammatory activity.
Before incubated with alliin, lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) stimulated 3T3-L1 adipocytes showed a significant increase in proteins involved in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including IL-6, MCP-1, and Egr-1 in 3T3-L1 adipocytes exposed to 100 ng/mL LPS for 1 hour.
According to the tested assay in lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) stimulated 3T3-L1 adipocytes incubated for 24 h with 100 μmol/L alliin, the bioactive compound inhibited such increase.
Furthermore, the overexpression of the phosphorylation of ERK1/2 associated with cell differentiation including cell death caused by LPS-induced inflammation in adipocytes was also decreased following alliin treatment.
Additionally, alliin prevented the expression of inflammation in facilitating the alternation of cell DNA by modulating the gene expressions involved in immune response such as tumor suppressive genes, and inhibiting the genes related to cancer.
Dr. Saray Quintero-Fabián, the lead scientist wrote, " The present results have shown that alliin is able to suppress the LPS inflammatory signals by generating an anti-inflammatory gene expression profile and by modifying adipocyte metabolic profile".
Taken altogether, alliin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with inflammation, depending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of alliin as a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#GreenTea's #Polyphenols #EGCG Improve Learning and Memory Deficits Through Their Anti Neuro-inflammatories Property, Researcher Find
By Kyle J. Norton
Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in protecting against memory deficits, some scientists suggested.
Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine or food, long-term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, inducing "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weakened immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory.
Memory deficit is a medical condition characterized by loss of the ability in-store and recall past information, such as knowledge, sensation, and thoughts,......
Loss of memory function is not only associated with normal aging progression in the adult population but is considered a feature of neurodegenerative diseases, including psychiatric and neurological disorders.
According to the Harvard neuro discovery center, today, approximately 5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer's disease; 1 million from Parkinson's; 400,000 from multiple sclerosis (MS); 30,000 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease), and 30,000 from Huntington's disease.
The evaluate green tea extract (GTex) and its major functional polyphenol (−)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) effect on the memory of cerebral ischemic rats showed that green tea EGCG and pentoxifylline (PTX), a methylxanthine derivative with anti-inflammatory function, application after 1 hour demonstrates strong efficacy in improved ischemia-induced memory impairment, according to Morris water maze test.
Long-term treatment of green tea EGCG also displayed a significant increase in levels of antioxidants such as malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, glutathione (GSH), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus, through prevented cerebral infraction breakdown of MDA and GSH in the hippocampus, in protected against damage to cellular components caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) including free radicals, peroxides, lipid peroxides...
Further analysis, green tea EGCG inhibited BV-2 microglial cells in the induction of brain inflammatory effect in precipitated neurodegeneration and neurotoxicology to facilitate memory impairment, through ameliorated the expression of lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) in exhibited free radical nitric oxide production which is associated to in initiated neurotoxicity.
Additionally, the application also ameliorated the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression associated with pro-inflammatory activities in mediated neurodegenerative processes of several acute and chronic diseases and expression of the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), one of the direct consequences of an inflammatory process in the BV-2 cells.
In short, the experiment of cerebral ischemia animal model indicated that green extract and its active polyphenol EGCG improved learning and memory deficits through exhibited antioxidant activity in the reduction of oxidative stress and neuroinflammation.
Moreover, green tea Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) with beneficial effects on the impairment of learning and memory also demonstrated increased autophagic activation in getting rid of damaged and dysfunctional cell accumulation to protect healthy neurons from stressful conditions, such as overexpression of ROS presentation, according to the experiment of chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS)-induced cognitive impairment in rats and observed through the elevated LC3-II, a reliable method for monitoring autophagy and autophagy-related processes, including autophagic cell death. and p62 protein level, a useful marker for the induction of autophagy,
At the same time, the green tea EGCG also displayed a strong inhibition of increased neuronal loss and activated mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)/p70 ribosomal protein S6 kinase (p70S6k) signaling caused by implication of chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) in the CA1 regions in the hippocampal circuit in the initiation of the pathophysiology of memory deficits, thus reducing amyloid beta1-42 (Aβ1-42) deposit, and restored autophagic degradation activity.
The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)/p70 ribosomal protein S6 kinase (p70S6k) signaling pathway is an essential cellular signaling pathway that involved a number of important physiological functions, including cell growth, proliferation, metabolism, protein synthesis, and autophagy.
Taken together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) may be considered an adjunct therapy in reduced risk and enhanced standard medicine for the treatment of memory deficits.

#Healthyfood #Tomatoes Inhibit the Risk of #ProstateCancer, According to Clinical Trials
By Kyle J. Norton
Prostate cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the prostate.
The prostate is a male reproductive gland that plays a critical role in the contribution of nutrients and fluid to sperm.
Most cases of prostate cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissue before penetrating into deeper prostate gland layers to induce metastasis via blood and lymph.
At the early stage, due to the very small size of the tumor, prostate cancer is asymptomatic.
The most common symptoms of the prostate at the later stage are frequent urination and weak or interrupted urine flow due to the tumor that affects the tube surrounded by the prostate.
In some cases, patients may experience symptoms of blood in the urine and pain due to the oversize tumor that has pressed on the nearby blood vessels and nerve cells.
The new onset of erectile dysfunction is also common in patients with prostate cancer.
The causes of prostate cancer are not identified. However, the increase in aging is one of the most common risk factors as most cases of the condition are diagnosed in older adults. Approximately, 60% of all cases are diagnosed in men over 65.c
According to the statistics, in 2017, 21,300 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer and the disease caused the death of 4,100 men in the same year.
The 5-year survival rate for most men with local or regional prostate cancer is nearly 100% compared to only 30% in patients diagnosed with prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body,
Some researchers in the concern that the risk of prostate cancer in the younger population suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades may be correlated to the rise of the disease.
Dr. Colleen Pelser, the lead scientist wrote, "Total fat and mono- and polyunsaturated fat INTAKES were not associated with the incidence of prostate cancer. Saturated fat intake was related to increased risk of advanced prostate cancer (HRQuintile 5 vs. Quintile 1 (Q1 vs. Q5)1.21; 95% CI 1.00–1.46; p-for-trend=0.03) and fatal prostate cancer".
And. "Our study suggests that the associations of fat and fatty acids differ by prostate cancer severity. Saturated fat, ALA, and EPA intakes were related to the risk of advanced or fatal prostate cancer, but not to non-advanced prostate cancer".
The results strongly suggested that if you are a high-fat diet follower, your risk of prostate cancer is increased substantially compared to a traditional diet.
Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongings to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.
In the urgency to find a natural compound for the treatment of prostate cancer, researchers investigated the effects of lycopene-rich tomato on prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in prostate cancer patients.
The study included 79 patients with prostate cancer randomized to a nutritional intervention with either 1) tomato products containing 30 mg lycopene per day; 2) tomato products plus selenium, omega-3 fatty acids, soy isoflavones, grape/pomegranate juice, and green/black tea (tomato-plus); or 3) control diet for 3 weeks.
According to the results of the test, the tomato group showed a significant PSA decrease compared to controls.
Compared to other groups, median PSA values decreased by 1% in patients with the highest increases in plasma lycopene, selenium, and C20:5 n-3 fatty acid, compared to an 8.5% increase in the patients with the lowest increase in lycopene, selenium, and C20:5 n-3 fatty acid.
In other words, PSA decreased the most in patients with the highest increase in lycopene alone.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "Three-week nutritional interventions with tomato products alone or in combination with selenium and n-3 fatty acids lower PSA in patients with non-metastatic prostate cancer".
Moreover, in the investigation of the association between tomato consumption and prostate cancer risk, researchers at Zhejiang University performed a meta-analysis to comprehensively evaluate this relationship.
Geographically, tomato intake showed significant protective effects in patients of Asian origin and Oceania populations compared to other regions.
According to the total of 24 published studies with 15,099 cases, tomato intake was associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer with the RRs of 0.76 found in the case-control and cohort studies.
Taken altogether, tomatoes may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Greentea' #EGCG Improves All Parameters Associated with the Recovery of #ChronicBackPain in Vivos
By Kyle J. Norton
Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in ameliorated symptoms and treatment of chronic back pain, some scientists suggested.
Green tea is a precious drink that processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.
Back pain is a condition of musculoskeletal disorders(MSDs) of the spine caused by various factors, including bone fractures, muscle or ligament injury, arthritis, and herniated discs. aging,.
Application of biologically active polyphenol epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) demonstrated a significant effect in reduced back pain through facilitating anti-inflammatory and anti-catabolic activity in patients with intervertebral disc (IVD) disease due to age-related changes in the adult disc in the induction of back pain.
According to the study by the Institute for Biomechanics (D-HEST), ETH Zurich ingestion of green tea EGCG on back pain patients, human IVD cells isolated from patients undergoing surgery due to degenerative disc disease (n = 34) and cultured in 2D or 3D indicated that the phytochemical inhibited levels of inflammatory response activated by IL-1β, a cytokine protein produced by macrophages, with function in contributed to the inflammatory pain hypersensitivity in the site of infection observed by the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), western blotting, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), immunofluorescence and transcription factor assay.
Furthermore, the application also displayed a strong effect in reduced expression of
p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases in mediated inflammatory factors of IL-1β in response to stress stimuli.
Also, according to the Institute for Biomechanics (D-HEST), in the investigation of the analgesic properties of EGCG, by the von Frey filament test in Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 60), green tea EGCG injection also significantly inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators as expressed in above and reduced matrix metalloproteinases which have been found to associate to pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and other proteins to regulate varied aspects of inflammation and immunity.
Moreover, in the radiculopathy pain component, researchers also indicated that EGCG inhibited the inflammation in the precipitated back pain through modulation of the activity of IRAK-1 in glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle and p38, c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK) and nuclear factor NF-κB in responded to stress stimuli in mediated production of pain-related pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β.
Some researchers postulated that back pain may also be induced by muscle degeneration and impairment of nerve injury, leading to increased levels of reactive oxygen species in induced tissue apoptosis.
In crushing the sciatic nerve-induced back pain in a tested animal, the application of green tea EGCG improved motor function in the toe spread and foot positioning and gain in the percentage motor deficit.
More importantly, EGCG expressed a significant effect on the recovery of sensory innervation in neuropathic pain-like syndrome and improvement of muscle tissues from injured limbs with severe histopathological alterations at the end of week 3 post-surgery in treated animals.
According to the RT-PCR assay, EGCG treatment also normalizes the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, the abnormal ratio of the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio has been found to associate with the induction of nerve cell apoptosis as well as inhibited levels of p53 with function regulated the cell death cycle at days 3 and 7 post-surgery.
These results demonstrated an important effect of green tea EGCG in enhanced functional recovery, protected muscle fibers from cellular death, and improved morphological recovery in skeletal muscle after nerve injuries.
However, in the study of caffeine activity in the modulation of pain perception in chronic pain states of 131 patients with chronic low back pain (64 men and 67 women; mean age = 42.1 years; mean duration of pain = 6.1 years) referred to a multidisciplinary pain clinic over a 2-year period, researchers found that in compared to caffeine intake regardless concentration, caffeine is not related to the global experience of pain and disability in patients with chronic low back pain, although high caffeine use may be embedded in a context of other unhealthy lifestyle behaviors.
Taken together, green tea and its bioactive component epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) may be considered a functional food for reduced back pain caused by physical damage to the spine and injured nerve cells. Intake of green tea supplements should be taken with exceptional care as some cases of liver acute toxicity have been reported in the medical literature.
