Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in ameliorated symptoms and treatment of chronic back pain, some scientists suggested.
Green tea is a precious drink that processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.
Back pain is a condition of musculoskeletal disorders(MSDs) of the spine caused by various factors, including bone fractures, muscle or ligament injury, arthritis, and herniated discs. aging,.
Application of biologically active polyphenol epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) demonstrated a significant effect in reduced back pain through facilitating anti-inflammatory and anti-catabolic activity in patients with intervertebral disc (IVD) disease due to age-related changes in the adult disc in the induction of back pain.
According to the study by the Institute for Biomechanics (D-HEST), ETH Zurich ingestion of green tea EGCG on back pain patients, human IVD cells isolated from patients undergoing surgery due to degenerative disc disease (n = 34) and cultured in 2D or 3D indicated that the phytochemical inhibited levels of inflammatory response activated by IL-1β, a cytokine protein produced by macrophages, with function in contributed to the inflammatory pain hypersensitivity in the site of infection observed by the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), western blotting, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), immunofluorescence and transcription factor assay.
Furthermore, the application also displayed a strong effect in reduced expression of
p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases in mediated inflammatory factors of IL-1β in response to stress stimuli.
Also, according to the Institute for Biomechanics (D-HEST), in the investigation of the analgesic properties of EGCG, by the von Frey filament test in Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 60), green tea EGCG injection also significantly inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators as expressed in above and reduced matrix metalloproteinases which have been found to associate to pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and other proteins to regulate varied aspects of inflammation and immunity.
Moreover, in the radiculopathy pain component, researchers also indicated that EGCG inhibited the inflammation in the precipitated back pain through modulation of the activity of IRAK-1 in glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle and p38, c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK) and nuclear factor NF-κB in responded to stress stimuli in mediated production of pain-related pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β.
Some researchers postulated that back pain may also be induced by muscle degeneration and impairment of nerve injury, leading to increased levels of reactive oxygen species in induced tissue apoptosis.
In crushing the sciatic nerve-induced back pain in a tested animal, the application of green tea EGCG improved motor function in the toe spread and foot positioning and gain in the percentage motor deficit.
More importantly, EGCG expressed a significant effect on the recovery of sensory innervation in neuropathic pain-like syndrome and improvement of muscle tissues from injured limbs with severe histopathological alterations at the end of week 3 post-surgery in treated animals.
According to the RT-PCR assay, EGCG treatment also normalizes the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, the abnormal ratio of the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio has been found to associate with the induction of nerve cell apoptosis as well as inhibited levels of p53 with function regulated the cell death cycle at days 3 and 7 post-surgery.
These results demonstrated an important effect of green tea EGCG in enhanced functional recovery, protected muscle fibers from cellular death, and improved morphological recovery in skeletal muscle after nerve injuries.
However, in the study of caffeine activity in the modulation of pain perception in chronic pain states of 131 patients with chronic low back pain (64 men and 67 women; mean age = 42.1 years; mean duration of pain = 6.1 years) referred to a multidisciplinary pain clinic over a 2-year period, researchers found that in compared to caffeine intake regardless concentration, caffeine is not related to the global experience of pain and disability in patients with chronic low back pain, although high caffeine use may be embedded in a context of other unhealthy lifestyle behaviors.
Taken together, green tea and its bioactive component epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) may be considered a functional food for reduced back pain caused by physical damage to the spine and injured nerve cells. Intake of green tea supplements should be taken with exceptional care as some cases of liver acute toxicity have been reported in the medical literature.

#Phytochemical #Isobetanin Found in #Beetroot Processes Free Radical Scavengering Activities, According to Studies
By Kyle J. Norton
Antioxidants are stable molecules that inhibit the onset of oxidation caused by free radicals.
Free radicals, on the other hand, are unstable molecules that cause oxidation, with unpaired electrons in the outermost ring.
Free radical scavengers are types of antioxidants that play a critical to neutralize free radicals before they can induce a chain reaction which can not be stopped until all unpaired electrons in the outermost are paired.
Overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes in the host body can lead to
oxidative stress, an indicator associated with the unbalanced ratio of the levels of antioxidants/free radicals
Epidemiologically, an imbalance ratio of free radicals/antioxidants has been linked to the onset of many chronic diseases, including atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion injury, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammation, stroke due to cellular, lipid and protein damage.
However, free radicals have the potential to be extremely harmful contaminants and extremely helpful for the treatment of cancers through their cytotoxic activity because of their high reactivity,
Believe it or not, free radicals present in the body in a moderate amount are important to the body's cardio-functioning, including the promotion of vascular function.
Some researchers in the examination of the effect of antioxidant-rich foods in the risk-free radicals initiation suggested that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and less in meat and processed foods has a lower risk of oxidative stress and oxidative stress-related diseases.
The National Centre for Complementary and Integrative Health in the article "Antioxidants: In-Depth" wrote, "Several decades of dietary research findings suggested that consuming greater amounts of antioxidant-rich foods might help to protect against diseases. Because of these results, there has been a lot of research on antioxidant supplements".
And "Observational studies on the typical eating habits, lifestyles, and health histories of large groups of people have shown that those who ate more vegetables and fruits had lower risks of several diseases, including cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer, and cataracts".
Isobetanin is Phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belongings to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard,...
On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the chemical constituents of betacyanin of Djulis (Chenopodium fromosanum), a native cereal plant in Taiwan.
Betacyanin of Djulis exhibited a significant antioxidant capacity at the maximum absorbance at 530 nm, depending on the pH.
Major chemical compounds that exerted a significant antioxidant capacity are betanin (47.8%), isobetanin (30.0%) with m/z 551.0, and armaranthin (13.6%), isoamaranthinee (8.6%).
According to the purified form, the pigment extract by HPLC, betanin, and isobetanin totally accounted for more than 70% of FRAP(ferric-reducing antioxidant power) which plays an important role in this regard of absorptivity for a variety of antioxidants and free radical scavenging capacity.
These results strongly suggested that betanin and isobetanin antioxidants process a strong antioxidant activity that may provide a basis for their sustainable utilization in the food industry.
Taken altogether, isobetanin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Antioxidant 3,3'-#Diindolylmethane Speeds Up Skin Wound Healing in All Stages in Vivos, Researchers Say
By Kyle J. Norton
Wound healing is a natural process to repair the wound or cut through a number of stages.
In the first stage, after receiving the message from the central nervous system, the immune first line of defense white blood cells stimulate the production of blood palettes to the site of damage to cover the wound and activate the protein associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to fight off the micro pathogens trying to enter the body.
Under normal conditions, proteins associated with the production of anti-inflammation cytokines may also switch to proinflammatory cytokines, depending on the size and location of the wound.
Overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines in this phase can cause the death of nearby healthy cells, leading to the formation of a scar.
Most microbial invaders are stopped at the acute phase of infection.
The wound healing process is divided into four overlapping phases: hemostasis, inflammatory, proliferative, and maturation.
Any interruption of the stage of wound healing also can lead to imbalanced production and dissolving of collagens in the site, inducing the formation of scars.
3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, etc.
In the urgency of finding a natural compound for speed-up wound healing without side effects, researchers evaluated 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM), a natural small-molecule compound involved in the repairing effects of hucMSCs on a deep second-degree burn injury rat model.
Where human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hucMSCs) have been used in the laboratory as a promising therapeutic tool in regenerative medicine.
HucMSCs pretreatment of 50 μM of DIM exhibited desirable repairing effects compared to the untreated hucMSCs.
In vivo, DIM enhanced hucMSCs in tissue regeneration by activation of proteins that pass signals into a cell through cell surface receptors.
Furthermore, DIM-primed hucMSCs (DIM-hucMSCs) also promote tissue regeneration by suppressing the inhibition of β-catenin that impairs the healing effects.
Moreover, DIM promoted the Wnt11 expression associated with all regeneration stages in hucMSC-derived exosomes.
Decreased expression of Wnt11 showed inhibited β-catenin activation.
Based on the findings, DIM enhanced tissue regeneration after a wound by promoting the genes associated with the healing process.
Dr. Shi H the lead scientist said, "DIM promotes the stemness of hucMSCs through increased exosomal Wnt11 autocrine signaling, which provides a novel strategy for improving the therapeutic effects of hucMSCs on wound healing".
Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for speed-up wound healing, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#GreenTea Intake 1-3 cups/day Is Associated with Reduced Risk of #CardiovascularDiseases, Scientists Show
By Kyle J. Norton
Green tea containing bioactive polyphenols may have a strong implication in reduced risk and treatment of cardiovascular disease, some scientists postulated.
Cardiovascular disease is a chronic medical condition characterized by narrowed or blocked blood vessels that can lead to a heart attack including chest pain (angina) or stroke.
According to statistics, heart disease is the second leading cause of death, claiming more than 48,000 lives every year.in Canada.
In the differentiation of green tea bioactive polyphenols epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG in risk of cardiovascular disease researchers at the joint study led by the Colorado State University found that application of EGCG activated the expression of the nuclear erythroid-2 like factor-2 (Nrf2) transcription factor in stimulated transcription of antioxidative genes in protection of cell against oxidative stress in induction of CVD.
Compared to statins, conventional medicine may be effective in reducing heart attacks and strokes in people at moderate and high risk but it can also cause cancers and multi-drug resistance cancer, EGCG ameliorated the risk of CVD without giving rise to adverse effects.
Further analysis of EGCG efficacy in risk of cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome by searching literature published online in major scientific databases, from 1995 to 2017, scientists found that EGCG exhibits a wide range of therapeutic properties including those associated with the inhibition of LDL cholesterol in reduced risk of plague accumulated in the arterial wall in elevated risk of atherosclerosis, attenuated angiotensin II (AngII) through inhibiting transcription factor NF-κB in induced abnormal enlargement, or thickening of the heart muscle, and reduced risk of highly oxidative enzyme myeloperoxidase(MPO) activity in promoted myocardial infarction, as level of myeloperoxidase(MPO) is considered as a biomaker used in assessment of risk of heart attack.
Additionally, EGCG also exerted significant and profound effects in the ameliorated risk of diabetes through lowering plasma glucose and glycated hemoglobin level, inhibited pro-inflammatory factors in elevated inflammation in the early phase of acute infection and chronic infection as well as blocking expression of ROS in stimulated free radical chain reaction through its antioxidant activity.
Dr. Eng QY, after taking into account other confounders, said, "EGCG shows different biological activities and in this review, a compilation of how this bioactive molecule plays its role in treating cardiovascular and metabolic diseases".
Moreover, a total of 9 studies including 259,267 individuals satisfied the criteria and guidelines included in the meta-analysis. by examining published literature in evaluating the association between green tea consumption, CVD, and ischemic-related diseases. up to October 2014, researchers indicated that for a nongreen tea drinker, risk of CVD was 1.19, intracerebral hemorrhage was 1.24 and cerebral infarction was 1.15 in compared to people who drank <1 cup of green tea per day.
Not surprisingly, people who drank 1-3 cups of green tea per day had a reduced risk of myocardial infarction 0.81, and stroke 0.64 in compared to those who drank <1 cup/day and who drank ≥4 cups/day had a reduced risk of myocardial infarction of 0.68 in compared to those who drank <1 cup/day.
And for people who consumed ≥10 cups/day of green tea were also shown to have lower LDL in compared to the group who drank <3 cups/day.
Dr. Pang J, the lead author at the final stage of the experiment said, "(The) meta-analysis provides evidence that consumption of green tea is associated with favorable outcomes with respect to risk of cardiovascular and ischemic related diseases".
The results finding of all studies confirmed that consumption of green tea is associated with favorable outcomes with respect to risk of cardiovascular disease as well as expression of various serum markers in the compilation of how green tea initiated protective activity against CVD.

#Healthyfood #Honey Demonstrates a Significant Antiviral Activity Against Varicella Zoster Virus (#VZV), According to Studies
By Kyle J. Norton
Honey may have a profound effect on reducing the risk and treatment of varicella-zoster virus (VZV), some scientists suggested.
Varicella-zoster virus is a member of the herpes viruses that cause chickenpox in children, teens, and young adults, and shingles and recurrent shingles in adults.
The disease has been found worldwide and is highly contagious.
Chickenpox usually caused by exposure either through direct contact with a skin lesion or airborne spread from respiratory droplets from infected patients.
In the initial stage of infection, the symptoms usually resolve within 7 to 10 days.
After initial infection, VZV establishes lifelong latency in the cranial nerve and dorsal root ganglia and can reactivate years to decades later.
Reactivation of the dormant virus results in later years and can lead to a painful dermatomal rash followed by pain in the distribution of the rash.
In some cases, the diseases can cause infrequently complications of hepatitis, pancreatitis, pneumonitis, and encephalitis and be life-threatening.
However, some adults and children are more likely to develop such complications from primary infection
According to the statistic, in the US, more than 90% of adults acquired the disease in childhood, due to being vaccinated with the live virus vaccine.
Dr. Maria A. Nagel and colleagues in the summary of the disease associated with the Varicella zoster virus (VZV), said, "With advancing age or immunosuppression, cell-mediated immunity to VZV declines and virus reactivates to cause zoster (shingles), which can occur anywhere on the body"
" Skin lesions resolve within 1-2 weeks, while complete cessation of pain usually takes 4-6 weeks" and "Zoster can be followed by chronic pain (postherpetic neuralgia), cranial nerve palsies, zoster paresis, meningoencephalitis, cerebellitis, myelopathy, multiple ocular disorders and vasculopathy that can mimic giant cell arteritis. All of the neurological and ocular disorders listed above may also develop without rash".
These results clearly suggested that the elderly due to the increase in age and weaken immune system, are considered to be the risk group for the development of serious and even life-threatening complications.
Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The rich golden liquid is considered healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener
With an aim to find a natural ingredient ]or whole food for the prevention and treatment of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection, researchers at the University of Colorado Denver evaluated the anti-viral effect of honey on varicella-zoster virus in vitro.
The tested VZV was obtained from a zoster vesicle.
Manuka and clover kinds of honey were used at concentrations ranging from 0-6% wt/vol in the study.
During the experiment, various concentrations of manuka and clover honey were added to the tissue culture medium of VZV-infected human malignant melanoma (MeWo) cells.
According to the assay, both types of honey demonstrated significant antiviral activity against the varicella-zoster virus with an approximate EC50 = 4.5 % (wt/vol).
In the final report, researchers suggested honey can be considered an anti-varicella-zoster virus agent because it is an inexpensive product that can be bought at any grocery store and is convenient for skin application.
Dr. Shahzad A, said, "Honey may be an excellent remedy to treat zoster rash in developing countries where antiviral drugs are expensive or not easily available".
Taken altogether, honey may be used as a topical function food for the prevention of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of chickenpox in children and shingles and recurrent shingles in adults with no side effects.
However, further data collection large example size, and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of honey anti chickenpox and anti-shingles possibilities.

#Healthyfood #Onion Reduces Plaque Accumulation in the Arteries, According to Studies
By Kyle J. Norton
Vascular protection is the process to protect the function of blood vessels associated with the reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.
More precisely, vascular protection is the mediation to enhance endothelial cell survival, suppression of thrombosis, and anti-inflammation accompanied by the inhibition of vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation.
Vascular dysfunction is a condition that causes arterial stiffness, and microvascular and endothelial dysfunction, and increases the risk of CVD.
Endothelial cells found in the endothelium that line the interior surface of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels by separating the circulating blood or lymph in the lumen and the rest of the vessel wall process some main functions, including acting as a semi-selective barrier between the vessel lumen and surrounding tissue and transporting white blood cells into and out of the bloodstream.
Endothelial dysfunction is a medical condition that reduces the function of the endothelium caused by the failure of the endothelial inner lining of the small arteries to function normally, affecting the cardio-functioning.
Epidemiologically, endothelial dysfunction has been found to induce cardiovascular conditions, including coronary artery disease (CAD), hypertension, and diastolic dysfunction.
Coagulation is a process of blood clotting. Overexpression of coagulation has been found to induce thrombosis.
Inflammation associated with plaque biology has been found to trigger thrombotic complications and arterial stiffness of atherosclerosis.
Microvascular dysfunction is a condition that causes abnormal function of the small blood vessels feeding the heart muscle, leading to heart disease and stroke.
Collectively, cardiovascular protection plays a critical role to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation to garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.
Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.
On finding a potent ingredient to protect the blood vessel against inflammation, researchers investigated the vascular protective effects of onion and garlic on vascular inflammation in an animal model.
The study included 30-day-old male Wistar rats that were assigned to control (C), F (10% fructose in drinking water), F+T (tempol 1 mM as control antioxidant), F+G, and F+O with aqueous G and O extracts administered orally in doses of 150 and 400 mg/kg/d respectively, followed by injection of tempol during the last 8 weeks of a 14-week period.
Fructose-fed rats (FFR) before treatment with garlic and onion had developed insulin resistance, and aortic NADPH oxidase activity associated with the elevated levels of free radicals.
Furthermore, systolic blood pressure and plasma TBARS associated with lipid peroxidation and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) expression in mesenteric arteries were also found to increase in the fructose-fed rats (FFR) rats.
In other words, fructose-fed rats (FFR) showed significant plaque accumulation in the arteries.
Moreover, endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) associated with cardioprotective activity in the heart was also decreased in the FFR rats.
Administration of garlic and onion to FFR rats reversed all parameters involved in cardiovascular dysfunction were inhibited observed by the reduced levels of oxidative stress, increased eNOS activity, and also attenuated VCAM-1 expression.
Taken altogether, onion used alone or combined with garlic may be considered remedies for vascular protection, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#ManukaHoney #Exerts a Promising Activity Against Various Influenza Strains, Researchers Say
By Kyle J. Norton
Honey may have a profound effect on reducing the risk and treatment of influenza, some scientists suggested.
Influenza, also known as the flu, is an infectious disease caused by an influenza virus.
There are 3 types of flu influenza: A, B, and C. The influenza viruses A and B are considered seasonal flu that causes sniffling, aching, coughing, running and stuffy nose, and fever to over 20% of the general population.
Influenza virus type C tends to cause mild upper respiratory infections, similar to those of colds.
Healthy individuals who have influenza are usually recovered within one week.
However, people with immature and weakened immune systems such as young children under age 5, adults older than age 65 residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, and chronic illnesses, such as asthma, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, and diabetes are not only associated with the risk of influenza but also increase the risk of influenza deadly complication.
Pregnant women and women up to two weeks postpartum due to changes of the immune system and other organs have been found to make a woman more prone to influenza and influenza complications.
Some researchers also suggested that obese people are also at a higher risk of the onset of influenza.
Dr. Green WD, the lead author at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill suggested that obese individuals associated with the impairment of the adaptive immune response at substantial risk of influenza.
The doctor team in the study " Obesity Impairs the Adaptive Immune Response to Influenza Virus" wrote, "Given the dramatic rise in obesity over the past few decades, this increased risk for influenza infection poses a serious public health threat because nearly 500 million adults and children worldwide are classified as obese".
"Obesity impairs the immune response to influenza and influenza vaccination through alterations of the cellular immune system. Compared with vaccinated healthy-weight adults, vaccinated obese adults have twice the risk of influenza or influenza-like illness despite equal serological response to vaccination".
The most common symptoms of influenza are high fever, runny nose, sore throat, muscle pains, headache, coughing, sneezing, and persistent fatigue.
Honey is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The rich golden liquid is considered healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener.
In finding a natural ingredient and whole food for the prevention and treatment of influenza, researchers at a joint study led by Nagasaki University the antiviral activities of honey samples were evaluated using MDCK cells.
Application of Manuka honey efficiently inhibited influenza virus replication which is related to its virucidal effects.
Manuka honey at the dose of 3.13 mg/mL also improved the function of zanamivir or oseltamivir by reducing the maximum concentration of effectiveness to nearly 1/1000th for their single use.
Dr.Watanabe K, the lead scientist said, "Honey, in general, and particularly Manuka honey, has potent inhibitory activity against the influenza virus, demonstrating a potential medicinal value.
Moreover, by re-examining the anti-influenza effect of Luatang honey, researchers suspected that the efficacy may be associated with the presence of methylglyoxal (MGO), a key component of Manuka honey.
By evaluating the anti-influenza viral activity of MGO and its potential in combination treatments with neuraminidase (NA) inhibitors, researchers found that
* Injection of MGO inhibited influenza virus A/WSN/33 replication 50% inhibitory concentration = 240 ± 190 μM; 50% cytotoxic concentration = 1.4 ± 0.4 mM; selective index (SI) = 5.8, which is related to its virucidal effects.
* MGO exerted a promising activity against various influenza strains.
* MGO increases the effect of NA inhibitors by decreasing the to ∼1/100(th) of their single usage.
* MGO also demonstrates a synergistic effect with NA inhibitor against the oseltamivir-resistant virus.
Taken altogether, Luatang honey processed bioactive compound methylglyoxal (MGO) may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of influenza with no side effects, pending a larger and multi-center human study.
