The liver is the largest internal organ and the only organ in the human body that can regenerate itself.
The liver is the first line of the bodily toxin defense by filtering the blood that comes from the digestive tract, before passing them to the rest of the body.
The liver also produces cholesterol that plays a critical role in building a strong cell wall, producing steroid hormones and vitamin D, and aiding the digestive function in food absorption and detoxifying chemicals and metabolizes drugs.
The hepatoprotective or liver protective effect is an action that maintains the healthy function of the liver against any harmful toxins.
Symptoms of liver diseases include jaundice, abdominal pain, swelling, swelling in the legs and ankles, itchy skin, dark urine, pale stool color, and a tendency to bruise easily.
There are no exact causes of liver disease. Viruses, toxins, genetics, alcohol, and unknown causes are some prevalent factors found in patients with chronic liver disease, inclduing cancer.
In the US, most cases of liver disease are a result of hepatitis viral infection and autoimmune diseases. Infectious viral hepatitis can produce toxins to protect them against the antioxidant enzymes produced by the host body and prevent the attack of the systematic immune response.
Furthermore, in recent years, excessive alcohol drinking has been found to induce alcoholic liver disease in many parts of Asia and America.
The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belongings to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.
Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.
On finding a potential compound that processes liver protective activity, researchers examined the effects of onion and garlic extracts on cadmium (Cd)-induced liver oxidative damage in rats.
The study included
* Cd group was challenged with 3CdSO(4).8H(2)O (as Cd; 1.5 mg/kg bw per day per oral) alone, and
* The extract-treated groups were pretreated with varying doses of onion and/or garlic extract (0.5 and 1.0 ml/100 g bw per day per oral) for a week and thereafter co-treated with Cd (1.5 mg/kg bw per day per oral) for 3 weeks.
Based on the tested differentiation, the Cd group showed a significant increase in the levels of lipid peroxidation and glutathione S-transferase, whereas antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase levels were decreased in the liver.
Furthermore, liver oxidative stress markers such as alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), and alkaline phosphatase were also found to increase in the Cd group.
In other words, Cd showed induced oxidative damage in rat liver.
Injection of garlic and onion extract not only inhibited all parameters in the Cd group but also exerted a liver protective effect in a dose-dependent manner.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "high dose of onion and a moderate dose of garlic extracts possibly via reduced lipid peroxidation and enhanced antioxidant defense system that is insufficient to prevent and protect Cd-induced hepatotoxicity".
Taken altogether, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver alcoholic cytotoxicity pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Turmeric Inhibits the Infection Caused by #RespiratorySyncytialVirus (RSV) Without Harming the Healthy Cells
By Kyle J. Norton
Infectious diseases are disorders induced by organisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites.
Out of trillions of organisms present on the earth, only a few hundred have been known to cause diseases.
Most infectious diseases are passed from person to person through direct or indirect contact with the infected patient. Others can be transmitted by insects or animals.
However, infectious diseases, the most prevalent in third-world countries are acquired by ingesting contaminated food or water.
Infectious diseases share the common symptoms of fever, diarrhea, muscle aches, coughing, and fatigue similar to those of influenza. Other symptoms are totally depending on the types of organisms including bacteria, and viruses.
In conventional medicine, except for viral infection, organism induced infection can be treated with
antibiotics. If you are taking antibiotics for the treatment of chronic infection, please make sure that you know all the side effects for preventive measures.
Believe it or not, most cases of infectious disease were stopped in the acute phase of infection. In which the immune system activated the first line of defense by destroying the pathogen before they have the chance of multiplication.
However, people with a weakened immune system such as the elderly, and immature immune systems such as infants are prone to infectious diseases.
Dr. Mouton CP, the lead scientist in the analysis of the immune system and disease associated with infection in the elderly wrote, "Infectious diseases account for one-third of all deaths in people 65 years and older... A change in mental status or decline in function may be the only presenting problem in an older patient with an infection. An estimated 90 percent of deaths resulting from pneumonia occur in people 65 years and older" and "Mortality resulting from influenza also occurs primarily in the elderly".
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In the urgency to discover a natural antiviral infection for the treatment of infectious diseases, researchers examined the effect of β-cyclodextrin (CD) functionalized graphene oxide (GO) composite, against the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), which is considered the major viral pathogen of the lower respiratory tract of infants.
According to the results from the tissue culture infectious dose assay and immunofluorescence assay, curcumin-loaded functional GO exerted a significant activity in the inhibition of RSV infection.
Furthermore, curcumin-loaded functional GO improved greatly the biocompatibility of the host cells.
In other words, the composite inhibited the infection caused by the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) without causing harm to the healthy cell in the tested cells.
Dr. the leads scientist after taking into account co and confounders wrote, "the composite could prevent RSV from infecting the host cells by directly inactivating the virus and inhibiting the viral attachment, and possessed prophylactic and therapeutic effects towards the virus.
Taken altogether, turmeric may be considered a supplement for the prevention and combined with chemical compounds for the treatment of viral infection, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric as a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Coffee May Increases the Risk of #IronDeficientAnemia, Researchers Suggest
By Kyle J. Norton
Compared to herbal medicine, food therapy even takes longer to ease symptoms, depending on the stage of the treatment which directly addresses the cause of the disease.
Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roast beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.
Dietary iron is an important mineral for our body to make oxygen-carrying proteins hemoglobin for red blood cells and myoglobin for muscle functioning as well as a wide variety of metabolic processes, including oxygen and electron transport, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis......
Coffee may interfere with digestive tract function in absorbed nonheme iron from dietary sources, a respectable study suggested.
According to the lead author of the study, a cup of coffee intake showed to reduce iron absorption from a hamburger meal by 39%, compared to 64% of tea, a potent inhibitor of iron absorption.
Even more interestingly, ingested a cup of drip coffee or instant coffee with a meal composed of semipurified ingredients, the rate of iron absorption was reduced from 5.88% to 1.64 and 0.97%, respectively.
In the time length basic, coffee exhibited the same degree of iron inhibition regardless of the hour before or after the meals.
Furthermore, the authors also found that a change in the concentration of coffee intake may also interfere with the rate of inhibition.
In the prevention of dietary consumption of induced iron deficiency, intake of iron-inhibited beverages such as tea and coffee are recommended to add iron-enhanced absorption foods into their diet such as ascorbic acid and meat, fish, and poultry;... and reduced intake of calcium.
Importantly, depletion of iron stores may only have minimal effect on enhanced iron absorption in people who follow an inadequate dietary situation, thus increasing the risk of iron-deficient anemia without even knowing it.
There is an algorithm established by the University of Göteborg, to calculate the amount of iron absorption without injection of dietary enhancers and inhibitors, using basal dose absorption of 40%, compared to different amounts of dietary factors known to influence iron absorption by measuring iron absorption from 24 complete meals with mean iron absorption in 31 subjects served a varied whole diet labeled with heme- and nonheme-iron tracers over a period of 5 days.
However, researchers of the study also said, "This algorithm has several applications. It can be used to predict iron absorption from various diets, to estimate the effects expected by dietary modification, and to translate physiologic into dietary iron requirements from different types of diets".
The findings suggested that coffee may have inhibited effect on the reduced digestive system functioning in the absorption of dietary iron. Therefore, people with iron deficiency anemia should take only coffee with an extra portion of iron enhancers in their meals.

#Healthyfood #Onion Inhibits the Alcohol-Induced Oxidative Stress in the Liver, Researchers Show
By Kyle J. Norton
The liver is the largest organ in the human body that not only filters out blood coming from the digestive system but also secretes bile to aid digestion, produce vitamin D and steroid hormones and build strong cell walls.
The liver also detoxes the drug and environmental toxicity before it can cause damage to the human body.
Alcoholic cytotoxicity is a condition that excessive alcohol induces healthy cell DNA alteration or cell death.
Excessive alcohol drinking epidemiologically is a major cause of alcoholic liver disease. Over time, the formation of liver scars not only promotes the onset of cirrhosis but also enhances the risk of liver cancer.
Some researchers suggested, there is a possible link associated with the cytotoxicity of ethanol on the cells lining the tissues in direct contact with alcoholic beverages that solves the initiation of local carcinogenesis.
According to a recent study posted on PubMed, short-term exposures (2-3 s) to ethanol concentrations between 10% and 15% have facilitated the cytotoxic effect on human epithelial keratinocytes in a concentration-dependent manner.
In other words, long-term injection of alcoholic beverages containing cytotoxic concentrations of ethanol, or diluting ethanol to cytotoxic concentrations can increase the risk of cancer, particularly to those of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, and esophagus.
Diseases associated with alcoholic cytotoxicity are preventable by changing the way of drinking and replacing alcoholic beverages containing non-cytotoxic concentrations of ethanol or diluting ethanol to non-cytotoxic concentrations.
Dr. Guillén-Mancina E in the evaluation of the cytotoxic concentrations of ethanol in the risk of cancer wrote, "Alcohol consumption is a known risk factor for cancer. Almost 6% of all cancers worldwide are attributable to alcohol use. Approximately half of them occur in tissues highly exposed to ethanol, such as the oral cavity, pharynx, upper larynx, and esophagus".
And "However, since ethanol is not mutagenic and the mutagenic metabolite of ethanol (acetaldehyde) is mainly produced in the liver".
The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation to garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.
Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of liver cancer, researchers examined the effects of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), one of the major colonic microflora-produced catabolites of quercetin glycosides derived from the onion.
In murine hepatoma Hepa1c1c7 cells used in the study of the regulation of chemoprotective enzymes, administration of DOPAC exerted a significant activity in the modulation of the aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) catalyzed oxidation.
Furthermore, the cytotoxicity induced by the acetaldehyde-induced cytotoxicity in vitro also was inhibited by the expression of DOPAC.
Moreover, in the modulation of the activity of the enzyme ALDH, DOPAC also enhanced the gene expression of ALDH1A1, ALDH2, and ALDH3A1 in a concentration-dependent manner.
In other words, the DOPAC protects the Hepa1c1c7 cells against alcohol-induced oxidative stress in the induction cytotoxicity that has been found to cause protein, lipid, and cell damage.
The results strongly suggested that DOPAC isolated from onion inhibited the expression of alcoholic influence that leads to the damage of normal liver cells.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "DOPAC acts as a potential ALDH inducer to prevent the alcohol-induced abnormal reaction".
Taken altogether, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver alcoholic cytotoxicity pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Phytochemical #Indicaxanthin Exhibits #MyeloperoxidaseFunction Against the Risk of Microbial Infection, Researchers Say
By Kyle J. Norton
Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a peroxidase enzyme found most abundantly in white blood cells neutrophil granulocytes.
Myeloperoxidase (MPO) processes a critical role in protecting our body against the invasion of microorganisms.
At cellular levels, myeloperoxidase (MPO) demonstrated to be a local mediator of tissue damage by stimulating the production of proinflammatory cytokines with an aim to protect the cell against the invasion of pathogens which may enter the body to induce the acute phase of infection.
In other words, MPO deficiency that induces the exaggerates of the inflammatory response and affects neutrophil functions including cytokine production has been found to reduce the immune function in the acute phase of infection that leads to chronic low-grade inflammatory disease.
MPO deficiency has been found in patients with diabetes mellitus, pregnancy, iron deficiency, renal transplantation, thrombotic diseases, lead poisoning, obstructive jaundice, disseminated cancers, hematologic disorders, and neoplasms.
However, genetic preposition may be the primary condition that causes the onset of PMO deficiency.
Dr. Roma Pahwa wrote, "Primary MPO deficiency is inherited as an autosomal recessive disorder and is generally present with varying degrees of severity and clinical features. A number of point germline mutations resulting in MPO deficiency have been detected in primary form. Some of these mutations are associated with the defective posttranslational processing of the MPO precursor protein and others with pre-translational defects caused by mutations in the regulatory portion of the MPO gene".
And, " Most of the mutations associated with the hereditary form are R569W (the commonest), Y173C, M251T, G501S, and R499C and a deletion of 14 bases (D14) within exon 9. It is noteworthy that eosinophils are never involved in MPO deficiency since eosinophil peroxidase is encoded by another gene than MPO".
Isobetanin is phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belongings to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard,...
With an aim to find a potent compound for the prevention and treatment of bacterial infection, researchers examined the effects of phytochemical indicaxanthin on the enzyme myeloperoxidase.
The kinetic study conducted by the University of Palermo was to examine the interaction between the betalains, betanin, and indicaxanthin as redox intermediates of compound I and compound II of MPO.
Based on the tested differentiation, both compounds I and compound II exhibited significant antioxidant activity and was found to associate with the concentration of betanin and indicaxanthin.
The presence of betalains and indicaxanthin exhibited the function of MPO in scavenging hypochlorous acid at pH 7.0 and 25 degrees C.
At neutral pH and depending on their concentration, both betalains, and indicaxanthin.can exhibit a stimulating and inhibitory effect on the chlorination activity of MPO.
However, at pH 5.0 both betalains and can only exhibit a stimulating and inhibitory effect on the chlorination activity of MPO in the micromolar concentrations.
Taken altogether, indicaxanthin may be considered a remedy for the promotion of the antibacterial activity of myeloperoxidase, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of Isobetanin and betalains in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent liver toxicity.

#Enzyme #Bromelain Exhibits Genotoxic Activity in #Cancer's Nucleic Acid in Vitros, According to Studies
By Kyle J. Norton
Genotoxicity is a process of destruction of a cell's genetic material (DNA, RNA), leading to gene mutation.
In other words, genotoxins are mutagens, substances that have been found to induce cancer. The most common genotoxins are radiation and toxic chemicals.
Believe it or not, besides causing cancer, genotoxins are found to induce various types of genetic diseases, by the damage the germ cell.
Some researchers suggested that the damage of DNA may be controlled if the genotoxins are identified through the use of anti-antimutagens/anti-clastogens that suppress or inhibit the mutagenesis process.
The most common causes of genetic damage or alternation are reactive oxygen species (ROS), the unstable and genotoxic molecules that exist everywhere in the environment and inside the human body.
By regulating the levels of free radicals in the body through the increased antioxidant enzyme inside the host or from the dietary sources, oxidative stress induced by ROS may be controlled. Thereby, reducing the risk of gene damage.
Dr. Mohamed SAKS, the lead scientist wrote in an article published in the Global Journal of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, "There are mainly two mechanisms of anti-mutagenesis:
a. Desmutagenesis in which the factors on the mutagens are somehow inactivated,
b. Bio-anti mutagenesis, in which the factors act on the process of mutagenesis or by repairing the damaged DNA that results in the decreased frequency of DNA mutation [15]. a number of cells have a DNA repair system by which they try to control the DNA mutations naturally".
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With the aim to find a potential treatment for cancer, researchers examined the genotoxic effect of
pineapple extract on oral cancer cell line by DNA fragmentation.
According to the DNA fragmentation assay, bromelain showed significant genotoxic activity by invading the cancer nucleus and causing damage to the nucleic acid.
In the examination of 3 different doses of bromelain incubated with oral cancer cells, DNA fragmentation occurred in all three concentrations.
In other words, bromelain inhibited oral cancer cell progression through genotoxic properties.
Furthermore, bromelain also inhibited the expression of MUC1, a glycoprotein associated with tumor cells' invasive, metastatic, and chemo-resistant properties in breast and pancreatic cancer cells.
Moreover, bromelain used a combination with either cisplatin or 5-FU also enhanced conventional medicine efficacy.
Additionally, in malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) expressed MUC1, administration of bromelain also affected the viability of MPM cells adversely.
Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of cancer through its genotoxic activity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Phytochemical #Carotenoids Are Inversly Associated with the Risk of #ProstateCancer, Researchers Find
By Kyle J. Norton
The prostate warped around the urethra is a gland of the male reproductive system found in front of the rectum and just below the bladder and responsible for making some of the semen that carries sperm.
Prostate cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused by cell growth irregularly in the prostate gland. Most cases of prostate cancer are slow-growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during Physical (rectum) exams.
Most cases of prostate cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissue before penetrating into deeper layers to induce colonization.
At the advanced stage, the prostate cancer cells can spread to distant parts of the body, leading to secondary metastasis.
Prostate cancer can be diagnosed by* Blood tests
* Digital Rectal Examination (DRE)
In DRE, your doctor inserts a lubricated, gloved finger into the rectum to feel the surface of the prostate gland to check for any abnormality of the prostate.
* Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS)
Ultrasound allows your doctor to visualize and assess the size of your prostate and to check for any abnormality and surrounding area with an image taken from the test. In transrectal ultrasound, a probe is inserted into the rectum to emit ultrasonic impulses against the prostate.
* Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test
The test is to measure the levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a protein produced by the prostate. The high levels of PSA may be an indication of a higher risk of the presence of prostate cancer.
* Prostatic Acid Phosphatase (PAP) test
Prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) is a test to measure the level of prostatic acid phosphatase, an enzyme produced by the prostate. The higher levels of PAP are an indication of the disease progression.
* Prostate biopsy
In a prostate biopsy, samples of the prostate are taken by a thin, tube-like instrument to examine under microscopy to review the stage of cancer.
According to the statistics, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men particularly in older over 65, after skin cancer. in 2019, approximately 174,650 men in the US will be diagnosed with prostate cancer.
The average age of diagnosis is 66.
Carotenoids are a class of mainly yellow, orange, or red fat-soluble pigments, including lycopene and carotene, found abundantly in ripe tomatoes, pumpkins, carrots, corn, and daffodils.
In finding a potential compound for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, researchers examined the effect of carotenoid levels on the risk of high-grade prostate cancer.
The study included the measurement of plasma levels of carotenoids and genotyped 20 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) in SOD1, SOD2, SOD3, XRCC1, and OGG1 in 559 men with non-metastatic prostate cancer undergoing radical prostatectomy.
According to the results from tested assays, the serum of circulated carotenoid levels was inversely associated with the risk of high-grade prostate cancer, with odds ratios (OR) of 0.34 compared to the highest versus lowest quartiles.
In chemical analysis, the relative odds ratio of α-carotene,β-carotene, lycopene, and total carotenoids.was 0.31, .55, 34, and 0.37 respectively.
In other words, all major phytochemicals found in carotenoids work synergistically to enhance the efficacy of carotenoids against the risk of high-grade prostate cancer.
Furthermore, the presence of the SNPs rs25489 in XRCC1, rs699473 in SOD3, and rs1052133 in OGG1 genotypes also was found to modify the activity of α-carotene, β-carotene, and lycopene, respectively.
Believe it or not, the high serum of lycopene was found among men with a Gleason score ≤ 3 + 4 and lower FGA (P = 0.04).
More precisely, the efficacy of carotenoids reduced the risk of prostate cancer, however, the risk of high-grade invasive prostate cancer are depending on the levels of lycopene.
Dr. Nordström T, the lead scientist said, "Higher lycopene level was associated with less genomic instability among men with the low-grade disease which is novel and supports the hypothesis that lycopene may inhibit the progression of prostate cancer early in its natural history".
Taken altogether, carotenoids may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of carotenoids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
