Obesity is a chronic condition characterized by excess body fat accumulated over time. People with a BMI of over 30 is considered obese.

Furthermore, the rate of obesity in the US and Canada continues to climb at an alarming rate, leading to significant burdens to the country economy and health care system.

Epidemiologically, the most common symptoms of obesity are breathlessness, increased sweating, inability to cope with physical activity, feeling very tired every day, back and joint pains, low confidence, and self-esteem and feeling isolation

According to the CDC, the most common complications associated with obesity are coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, cancer of breast, colon, endometrial, gallbladder, kidney, and liver and sleep apnea.

Currently, there is no effective treatment for reducing the disease. However, some researchers suggested powerful environmental factors that influence eating and physical activity may be the best in combating obesity.

Bariatric surgery is used as an option for management that causes a reduction in the amount of food you are or a reduction in the absorption of calories from the food you eat, or both.

The surgery has been proposed for patients with extreme obesity (BMI of 40 or higher) due to weight-induced a serious weight-related health problem, such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

Furthermore, this type of surgery has posed a serious risk to many patients if the commitment to making lifelong changes in eating and exercise habits cannot be followed through.

Collard Green is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belongings to the family Brassicaceae with unknown origin. Today, the plant is cultivated commercially for its thick, slightly bitter edible leaves.

To find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of obesity, researchers examined the effect of sulforaphane found abundantly in collard greens.

In a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity in C57BL/6N mice that were fed a normal diet (ND), HFD or HFD plus 0.1% sulforaphane (SFN) for 6 weeks, researchers found that SFN administration not only attenuated HFD-induced visceral adiposity that stored around several important internal organs such as the liver, pancreas and intestines, adipocyte hypertrophy associated with an enlargement of adipose tissue but also ameliorated fat accumulation in the liver.

Furthermore, SFN decreased the elevated levels of serum total cholesterol and leptin, and liver triglyceride in HFD-SFN-fed mice compared to HFD-fed mice.

SFN also inhibited the expression of a gene associated with the promotion of inflammation in the adipose tissue of HFD-SFN mice and increased the adiponectin function in regulating glucose levels and fatty acid breakdown.

Moreover, reductase expression associated with the production of cholesterol was decreased and an antibody associated with fatty acid utilization was increased in the lycopene treatment group compared with HFD-fed mice.

Taken altogether, collard green processed abundantly SFN may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of obesity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Kidney bean is popular because of its kidney shape, strong flavor, and color of reddish-brown in nature, genus Phaseolus, belonging to the family Fabaceae. The bean is often an excellent dietary selection with no cholesterol, but a good source of protein and minerals.

Furthermore, standardized and purified P. vulgaris extract (PVE), when employed as a supplement in a mixed balanced meal (60 % carbohydrates, 25 % lipids, and 15 % protein), in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled of 12 volunteers, exerted a significant on hypometabolic and appetite control affecting satiety sensations and lower desire to eat.

But further studies are needed to prove the concept of kidney beans as a supplement used as a functional food in balanced meals in obese, glucose-intolerant, and diabetic subjects.

Dr. the lead scientist wrote after taking into account co and confounders in the final report, "Fasting serum hippuric acid is increased after consumption of anthocyanin-rich bilberries, and may contribute to the beneficial effect of bilberry consumption through its associations with better glycemic control and β-cell function".

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced risk, progression, and treatment of
fibromyalgia caused by oxidative stress, some scientists suggested.

Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition characterized by muscle and soft tissue pain affecting over 10 million (3.6% of the population) people in the US alone.

According to the study in the review of literature on the frequency and pattern of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) of 289(95%) patients who completed the survey (263 women and 26 men) between February 2003 and July 2003, green tea was recommended at 24% for treatment of fibromyalgia (FM).

In other words, in herbal medicine, green tea is considered to have a certain effect in reducing the symptoms and treatment for such a syndrome.


Some evidence in medical literature suggested that the overproduction of ROS in the induction of oxidative stress may have a strong implication in the pathophysiology of FM.

In the investigation of the effect of green tea epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) in the protection of oxidative stress to cardiac cells cultured in the conditions of control, 400 μM H2O2 exposure for 30 min with and/or without 10 to 20 μM EGCG pre-treatment, researchers at the National Tsing Hua University found that treatment of green tea in H(2)O(2) group demonstrated a significant reduction of levels of reactive oxygen species through its antioxidant and its ability in induced production of natural antioxidant present in the cardiac cells in compared to overexpression of ROS in H2O2 treatment group without injection of EGCG.

Also, the application of green tea reduced levels of cytosolic Ca2+ overload in the H(2)O(2) group in induced oxidative stress in experiment cell apoptosis through improved antioxidant protein.

Interestingly, EGCG inhibited the ameliorated H(2)O(2) expression in increased glycolytic protein in response to the degree of oxidative stress in the cultured cells and α-enolase, a key glycolytic enzyme on the surface of several cell types in the contribution of impaired glycolytic activity through oxidative and nitrative stress.

Additionally, green tea EGCG also decreased levels of peroxiredoxin-4, an antioxidant with function in protection against oxidative stress by detoxifying peroxides and mitochondrial proteins with the function of redox reactions of oxidative phosphorylation.

After taking into account other confounders, researchers suggested that ingestion of green tea EGCG inhibited the damage of the H(2)O(2) group through inhibition of the downstream signaling for Akt in expression glucose oxidation and cell apoptosis in cellular processes and loss of phosphorylation of GSK-3β and cyclin D1 depletion in facilitated oxidative stress.

These results postulated that green tea EGCG exerted a similar inhibited effect of those of GSK-3β inhibitor (SB 216763) in significantly improved H(2)O(2)-induced suppression on cell viability, phosphorylation of pAkt (S473) and pGSK-3β (S9), and level of cyclin D1 in cells.


The above differentiation was supported by the study conducted by the Universidad de Sevilla, in evaluating some evidence of green tea in reduced oxidative stress in facilitated pathophysiology of FM in initiated signs and symptoms of muscular alteration and mitochondrial dysfunction.

Truly, in the primary rat model, administration of green tea EGCG in different concentrations for 24 h before being exposed to hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) for 2 h to induce oxidative stress, researchers found that pretreatment with 10, 25, and 50 µM EGCG significantly inhibited the expression of H2O2 in a reduced substantial decrease in cell viability.

Further analysis also showed that green tea EGCG application dose of 50 µM ameliorated the proportion of propidium iodide (PI)-positive cells increased in cultures caused by H(2)O(2) injection, thus reducing H(2)O(2) in induced cell death.

Taken together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols EGCG may be considered a functional food in reduced risk, progression, and treatment of fibromyalgia caused by overexpression of oxidative stress. However, the intake of green tea supplements should be taken with extreme care as acute liver toxicity has been reported in a number of medical literature.

Postprandial blood glucose is the range of blood glucose that is measured by the blood glucose test, taken after 2 hours of a meal.

At this point of measurement, postprandial blood glucose in a healthy individual usually goes back down. In other words, lower or equal to 7.8 mmol/L (140 mg/dL) 2 hours after eating are normal blood glucose found in a healthy individual.

Glycemic response is a change in blood glucose after consuming a carbohydrate-containing food compared to Glycemic Index (GI) which ranks carbohydrate-containing foods, according to their effect on blood glucose levels.

In other words, the glycemic response is the change of blood glucose after the intake of a food or meal.

More precisely, healthy people who do not have prediabetes or diabetes have normal blood glucose and insulin levels that rise within the range after eating, then return to the fasting levels over a short period.

According to the 2015 statistics by the American Diabetes Association, in the U.S. over 30.3 million Americans, or 9.4% of the population are living with diabetes. Sadly, out of 30.3 million adults with diabetes, 23.1 million were diagnosed, and 7.2 million were undiagnosed.

In 2015, 84.1 million Americans age 18 and older had prediabetes.

According to epidemiological studies, by managing postprandial blood glucose effectively, diabetics can decrease the risk of microvascular (retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy) and cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diabetes, researchers investigated the postprandial effects of dried cranberries following a high-fat breakfast challenge in obese participants with type 2 diabetes (T2DM).

The randomized crossover trial includes blood draw and vascular measurements such as fasting, 1, 2, and 4 hours (h), following the consumption of a fast-food style high-fat breakfast (70 g fat, 974 kcal) with or without cranberries (40 g).

According to the results of the analysis, biomarkers associated with inflammation and oxidative markers such as interleukin-18 and malondialdehyde were significantly lower at 4 h.

Serum total nitrite was found to be higher at 2 h in the cranberry compared to the control group.

However, there were no significant differences in levels of insulin, insulin resistance, lipid profiles, and blood pressure between the cranberry and control group.

Furthermore, cranberries showed no effect on the levels of C-reactive protein or interleukin-6.
In other words, dietary cranberries inhibited the high-fat breakfast-induced postprandial glucose and selected biomarkers of inflammation and oxidation in patients with T2DM without affecting other parameters associated with diabetes such as insulin, insulin resistance, lipid profiles, and blood pressure.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Adding whole cranberries to a high-fat meal may improve postprandial blood glucose management and warrant further investigation".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy used for postprandial blood glucose management, pending t the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

An atheroma, or atheromatous plaque ("plaque"), is an abnormal accumulation of plaque in the inner layer of the wall of an artery, found in most adults, a leading cause of atherosclerosis.
Atherosclerosis is a condition caused by long-term plaques built-up on the wall of the arteries, leading to the narrowing arteries, a major cause of cardiovascular disease (CVD)

CVD is a medical condition involved in blood vessels. CVD can be heart disease or stroke depending on the location of a blood clot that causes blockage of the blood flow in the artery.

According to the statistics provided by the European Heart Network, cardiovascular disease (CVD) causes 3.9 million deaths in Europe and over 1.8 million deaths in the European Union (EU) every year. In 2015, approximately, 11.3 million new cases of CVD in Europe and 6.1 million new cases of CVD in the EU were diagnosed.

Plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood.

Atheromatous plaques build up in the arteries can be classified into several stages, including
* Stage 1 is the foam cells of macrophage and fatty deposits are localized on blood vessel walls.

* Stage 2 Type II is various thread-like fibers or filaments accumulated on the arterial wall.

* Stage 3 is connective tissue deposition on the arteries is thicker.

Stage 1-3 is most frequently found in patients with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, and who smoke.

* Stage 4 and 5 Type IV and V are conditions that the softer plaque with a thinner fibrous cap containing macrophages and smooth muscle cells are formed.

Atherosclerosis at the early stage is asymptomatic. However, in stage 4 and 5, patients may experience symptoms of chest pain, pain in their leg, and arm, particularly in the area of a blocked artery, shortness of breath, fatigue muscle weakness due to reduce blood flow in the artery.

Indicaxanthin is a phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belongings to the group of Betalains found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "( Indicaxanthin( a highly bioavailable dietary phytochemical, may exert protective effects against atherogenesis toxicity of 7-KC at a concentration of nutritional interest".

Taken altogether, indicaxanthin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of atheromas, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
