#Healthyfood #Onions are Inversely Associated with the Risk of #StomachCancer, Scientists Show

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissues of the affected organ.
The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow, and important organ of the digestive tract.

Stomach cancer is a medical condition characterized by abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach.

Depending on the location of the cancer that starts the malignancy, stomach cancer can be classified into
* Adenocarcinoma arose from the glands in the mucosa, including
** Superficial spreading
It is an early stage of cancer and tends to be less aggressive.

** Polyploid
Cancer grows in a pattern like a polyp and is less aggressive.

** Infiltrating
If cancer grows in infiltrating pattern into the stomach wall and is more aggressive.

** Linitis plastica
Cancer grows diffusivity throughout the whole wall of the stomach.
Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer.

* Lymphomas
Cancer of the lymphocytes originating from the stomach behaves much like lymphomas of the other parts of the body but adenocarcinoma

* Sarcomas
The cancer originated from the connected tissue of the stomach and behaves much like sarcomas of the other parts of the body but adenocarcinoma.

Most patients with stomach cancer in the early stage are asymptomatic. However, at the later stage, patients may experience symptoms of pain and/or discomfort in the stomach area, mild ache in the upper part of the body, difficulty swallowing, feeling full or bloated after a small mealy, and vomiting blood or having blood in the stool accompanied by general symptoms shared by other types of cancer, including unintentional weight loss, loss of energy, tiredness, nausea, and vomiting and loss of appetite.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation to garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of stomach cancer, researchers examined the chemopreventive effects of Allium vegetables (onions, garlic, shallots, leeks, chives, and so forth) on gastric cancer risk.

The study includes the research of MEDLINE studies of Allium vegetable consumption and gastric cancer published in any language, from January 1, 1966, to September 1, 2010.
19 case-control and 2 cohort studies, of 543,220 subjects. were selected in the analysis. Onion and other allium vegetable consumption in large amounts reduced the risk for gastric cancer with an odds ratio of 0.54 in the comparison of the highest and lowest consumption groups.

More precisely, an increment of 20 g/day of Allium vegetables consumed (approximately the average weight of 1 garlic bulb) showed a summary odds ratio of 0.91 based on case-control studies from the dose-response meta-analysis.

These results strongly suggested that regular consumption of onion has an inverse association with the risk of stomach cancer in a dose-dependent manner.

In other words, the risk of stomach cancer was reduced proportionally to the amount of onion intake regularly.

Taken altogether, onion used alone or combined with conventional medicine may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of stomach cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#NavyBean Promotes the Healthy Gut Bacterial Metabolism Through its #Prebiotic and #Probiotic Activities, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Gut microbiota is a community of microbes living in the gastrointestinal tract, including at least 1000 different species of known bacteria with more than 3 million genes.

Normally, the ratio of good and bad microbes in the gut is balanced. However, people who have a psychological condition such as anxiety, and depression, and are under constant stress and long-term use of antibiotics, particularly your diet may have a negative impact on the ratio.

In other words, the risk factors that alter the ratio of the microbes in the gut may lead to inflammation, oxidative stress, and blood sugar imbalances.

The impact of gut microbes can also have a strong influence on what the human host is able to extract from its diet, both nutritionally and energetically.

Epidemiological studies suggested overweight and obese people show dysbiosis characterized by a lower diversity. In other words, imbalanced gut microbiota dysbiosis promotes diet-induced obesity and metabolic complications.

Some researchers suggested that we can optimize our health by manipulating the gut microbiota through diet by increasing the intake of prebiotic and probiotic foods.

However, the benefits may totally depend on their effect on the resident community which is different individually.

Dr. Hall A, the lead scientist in the study of microbial metabolism in the mammalian gut, wrote, "Microbial dysbiosis, however, has been implicated in a number of human disorders, including obesity and inflammation. This dichotomy highlights the need to understand the factors that determine the composition and metabolic output of our resident and transient microbes".

And, " Throughout the human lifespan, we know that diet plays a major role in shaping gut microbial communities, as well as directing the types and amounts of metabolites produced. Understanding the factors that affect microbial metabolic output within the host may help identify the roles of microbes in health, as well as new targets for treatment in disease".

The small, white navy bean, also called pea bean or haricot, popular in both dry and green forms, is very popular in Britain and the US, native to Peru. It is now grown and consumed across the world, due to its numerous health benefits.

In finding a natural compound for the improvement of gut microbiota, researchers examined the effects of heat-stabilized rice bran (SRB) and cooked navy bean powder (NBP) phytochemicals on colonic microbiota and intestinal health.

The experiment included a total of 29 overweight/obese volunteers with a prior history of colorectal cancer who consumed a study-provided meal and snack daily including eating SRB (30 g/day) or cooked navy bean powder (35 g/day) on gut microbiota and metabolites for 28 days.

Based on the tested assays,* SRB or NBP showed increased gut bacterial diversity and altered gut microbial composition at 28 days compared to baseline in favor of the "good" bacteria.
* Supplementation with SRB or NBP increased total dietary fiber intake similarly, compared to the decrease in rice bran intake.

* More precisely, the Firmicutes: Bacteroidetes ratio is increased and SCFA (propionate and acetate) associated with chronic inflammatory disease in the stool is decreased after 14 days but not at 28 days.

The results strongly suggested that the efficacy of cooked navy bean in the re-balanced the gut microbiomes in favor of the good bacteria may be attributed to fiber contents in the interaction with
phytochemicals in the bean.

Dr. Sheflin AM, the lead scientist said, " modulation of gut microbiota and fermentation byproducts by SRB and suggest that foods with similar ability to increase dietary fiber intake may not have equal effects on gut microbiota and microbial metabolism".

Taken altogether, the cooked-navy bean may be considered a remedy for the improvement of gut microbiota, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Antioxidant Quercetin Found in #GreenTea inhibits the ProinflammatoryCytokies Against the Risk of #IntestinalIschemia

By Kyle J. Norton

Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in reduced risk and treatment of intestinal ischemia, some scientists suggested.
Intestinal ischemia is a serious medical condition characterized by reduced blood flow to the
intestines.

In the evaluated 3 groups of male rats randomly assigned to Group I (ischemia-reperfusion, I/R) underwent I/R of the intestine (30 min of ischemia followed by 1 h of reperfusion). Group II (green tea + I/R) was given green tea for 2 wk before inducing I/R. In Group III (control) with sham I/R, researchers found that the injection of the green tea group showed an impressive restoration of intestinal mucosa compared to the ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) group.

In observation of cellular antioxidant profile (superoxide dismutase and catalase), the green tea group expressed a significant improvement of antioxidants similar to those of group III and in compared to group II.

The expressions of cellular proliferation markers (proliferating cell nuclear antigen and Ki-67) in regulated intestinal cell division and proliferation were also increased by green tea application.

The above illustration indicated that long term intake of green tea injection may exhibit strong protection against the intestinal mucosa from injury.

Further differentiation of the effect of Quercetin, the bioactive substance of tea against experimental ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury of the small intestine in rats, found that quercetin administrated intraperitoneally 30min before 1h ischemia of superior mesenteric artery with following reperfusion periods lasting 1, 4 and 24h significant decreases cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzyme in the epithelial lining of the intestinal villi in expression of normal cell apoptosis only during 24h of reperfusion in a late phase of IR injury in comparison with the control group.

According to the observation of the morphology of COX-2 positive cells, COX-2 positivity was found particularly in goblet cells with a function in secreting the main component of mucus.of the intestinal villi epithelium and enteroendocrine cells found in the wall of the gut that secrete hormones that regulate glucose levels, food intake, and stomach emptying respectively, in the glandular epithelium in the group I mice in compared to significantly lesser levels in green tea group.

Dr. Tóth Š, the lead authors at the joint study said," Quercetin application attenuated mucosal damage from IR injury by inhibiting neutrophil infiltration which was demonstrated by a lower number of myeloperoxidase positive cells in the lamina propria".

In another similar study with male-specific pathogen-free (SPF) Charles River Wistar rats were used in the experiment with quercetin administered intraperitoneally 30min before 1h ischemia of superior mesenteric artery with following 24h lasting reperfusion period., researchers at the joint study lead by the Pavol Jozef Safarik University, also indicated that application of quercetin increases the production of anti-inflammatory cytokine IL10 observed by analysis of the blood sample and jejunal tissue and in the number of CD68-positive cells in the lamina propria mucosae (p<0.001) in initiation of production of new blood vessels growth and inflammatory cytokines in compared to control group.

Dr. Curgali K, the lead authors, after taking into account of other con-founders, said, "The preventive application of quercetin before induction of jejunal IRI stimulates faster jejunal mucosa restoration and it seems to have immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects" and "CD68-positive macrophages could have crucial role in this process since they work as both growth factor and cytokine producers".

Taken together, green tea with abundant bioactive phytochemicals such as quercetin may be considered a functional food with reduced risk and prevented the onset of intestinal ischemia. People with a high risk of the development of intestinal ischemia may consider adding 1 or 2 cups of green tea to their daily diet.

#MaternalCoffee Intake > 4 Cups/Day Is Associated with An Increased Risk of #Miscarriage, Clinical Trials Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

The risk of miscarrying is increased substantially in excessive coffee drinkers during pregnancy, an Asian study suggested

Coffee, one of the most popular and social beverages all over the world, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Miscarriage is the expulsion of a fetus from the womb between the 12th and 28th weeks of gestation.

In a case-controlled study conducted in Milan of 561 (72%) cases of spontaneous abortion and 877 (57%) controls, coffee drinking during the first trimester of the index pregnancy with healthy women who gave birth at term (> 37 weeks gestation) to healthy infants as control, researchers reported that the risk of miscarrying is classified as follow
1. Coffee intake of 1, 2 or 3, and 4 or more cups of coffee per day are associated with increased risk of 1.2, 1.8, and 4.0, respectively compared to non-drinkers.
2. The risk of pregnancy loss also is associated with the duration of years of coffee drinking. The estimated multivariate odds ratios of spontaneous abortion were 1.1 in comparison to the non-coffee intake group.

Furthermore, in the evaluated effect of caffeine on the influence of miscarriage researchers at the Boston University School of Public Health, conducted a prospective cohort study that included 5132 Danish women planning pregnancy, enrolled from 2007 to 2010, after carefully assessing the returned beverage consumption on questionnaires, the researcher found that a significantly miscarried risk is 1.62 higher in women consumed more that 300 mg/day of caffeine per day, in compared to 1.09 in women who consume <100 mg/day. Specifically, women with a daily intake of the caffeine of
1. <100 mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 1.09
2. 100-199mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 0,89
3. 200-299mg/day showed a materially associated with SAB risk of 1.33

Other, in a prospective cohort study, included 15,590 pregnancies from 11,072 women with no history of SAB in the Nurses' Health Study II (1991-2009) with beverage intake assessed every 4 years using a validated questionnaire in case pregnancies were lost spontaneously at <20 weeks gestation, total coffee intake had a positive, linear association with SAB.
In comparison to non-pre-pregnancy coffee intake, the risk of SAB increased by 20% for women consuming ≥4 servings/day.
More importantly, Dr. Gaskins AJ, the lead author said, "Pre-pregnancy coffee consumption at levels ≥4 servings/day is associated with increased risk of SAB, particularly at weeks 8-19".

Taking together, there is no doubt that coffee may contribute to a relative risk of miscarrying for women consuming more than 4 cups per day. Women who are pregnant between 12 to 28 weeks of gestation with excessive coffee intake habits are recommended to consult with their doctors.

#Healthyfood #Cranberry Processes Anti #UrinaryTractInfection (#UTIs) by Suppressing Inflammation Induced by Pathogenic Invasion, Researchers Show

By Kyle J. Norton

Infection is an inflammatory condition caused by a microbial invasion of body tissues
Most cases of bacterial infection are treated with antibiotics. However, bacteria are very adaptable, overuse of antibiotics has been found to make them resistant to antibiotics.

The most common symptoms of bacterial infection include redness and heat, swelling, fever, and pain at the site of infection.

Urinary tract infection (UTIs) mostly occurred in women is an infection that affects the bladder and urethra caused mostly by bacterial strains Escherichia coli (E. coli), commonly found in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

UTIs have been found to limit the function of the bladder and induce kidney infection.

Most common symptoms of urinary infection are a persistent urge to urinate, urinary burning sensation, cloudy urine, and smelly urine.

In severe cases, patients may also experience symptoms of blood in the urine and bladder and pelvic pain.

Most common risk factors of urinary tract infection are gender, females are more like to have UTI comapred to males, sexual activity, use of birth control, and menopausal women.

Some researchers suggested that sexual intercourse may increase the risk of symptomatic urinary tract infection in postmenopausal women.

Dr. Elya E. Moore, the lead scientist in the joint study lead by the University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine wrote, ".., as with younger women, sexual intercourse is strongly associated with UTI in post-menopausal women, supporting a common mechanism for infection among women of widely varying ages".

And, " This finding emphasizes the clinical importance of inquiring about recent sexual intercourse when treating post-menopausal women for symptomatic urinary tract infections".

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of urinary infection, researchers examined the effect of cranberry anti urinary tract infections (UTIs) activity.

Based on the analysis, cranberry consumption showed a significant effect on decreasing UTI related symptoms by suppressing inflammatory associated with the immunologic response to pathogenic invasion by eradicating the bacteria.

Furthermore, injection of cranberry against UTIs was also found to prevent the development of infections only in populations at lower risk for contracting UTIs compared to quite effective in a higher risk population.

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of UTIs, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Enzyme #Bromelain Inhibits #ChronicRhinosinusitis (RS) Through Its Anti-Inflammatory Activities, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Rhinosinusitis (RS) is a condition associated with the inflammation of the sinuses and nasal cavity.
Chronic Rhinosinusitis (CRS) is an inflammation of the sinuses and nasal cavity that last more than 12 weeks.

According to statistics, the prevalence of CRS in Korea, Europe, and the US is approximately 7%, 10%, and 12%, respectively.

The exact causes of CRS are not identified. However, some researches suggested that infection that does not heal itself due to the inability of the immune system to destroy all the infectious pathogens in the acute phase of infection may play a critical role in the onset of the condition.

Symptoms of CRS are totally depending on the state of severity. Some patients may experience symptoms of facial pressure or pain, post-nasal drainage, nasal blockage, anosmia or hyposmia, or fatigue.

Conventionally, medications used for the treatment of CRS are focusing on reducing symptoms and improving quality of life, including prescribed antibiotics in case of bacterial infection.

If all medicines fail, surgery may be necessary.

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of CRS, some researchers suggested that cigarette smoking may have a strong and negative impact on the syndrome.

Dr. Douglas D. Reh, the lead scientist wrote, " Environmental factors such as inhaled pollutants like cigarette smoke may play a significant role in diseases of the upper airway including chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS)".

And, "There is clear evidence in the literature that cigarette smoke, either through active smoking or passive exposure to SHS, contributes to CRS".

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to discover a potential ingredient for the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis, researchers investigated the penetration of bromelain into sinonasal mucosa in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), compared to the control group.

40 participants with CRS were divided into 2 groups equally either treated by bromelain derived from pineapple (Ananas comosus) or control.

Bromelain 500 mg tablet twice daily administered for 30 days in the treatment group displayed a significant effect in reduced inflammation in patients with CRS compared to control.

In other words, bromelain has an excellent distribution from blood to rhinosinusal mucosa in the exhibition of anti-inflammatory activity.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Its (bromelain) diffusion ability may allow the use of bromelain as an anti-inflammatory agent in paranasal sinus pathologies".

In a pilot study, researchers evaluated the efficacy, tolerability, and impact on the quality of life (QoL) of bromelain tablets (500 FIP) in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS).

According to the results from 12 patients suffering from CRS with (CRS+NP) or without (CRS-NP) nasal polyps who had undergone prior sinus surgery, treatment with bromelain tablets (500 FIP) for 3 months, exerted a strong effect in symptom scores (Total Symptom Scores: TSS); a Total Rhinoscopy Score (TRS) and the Sinonasal Outcome Test 20 (SNOT-20 GAV) with no side effects.

Dr. Büttner L, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "Preliminary results indicate good tolerability, symptom control, and improvement in QoL for the treatment of CRS using bromelain tablets (500 FIP)".

Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Coffee and Coffee Caffeine Show a Disruptive Effect on Induced Insomnia and Symptoms of Insomnia, Studies Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Coffee consumption may have a negative effect on the induced insomniac occurrence, a renowned institute study suggested.
Insomnia is a condition characterized by unable to sleep regularly and normally

Coffee, a popular and social beverage worldwide, particularly in the West, is a drink made from roasted beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

A total of 7698 subjects aged 11-17 years were included in the investigation of a cross-sectional study within the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents. Self-report questionnaires returned by participants showed that
1. Frequent coffee consumption, accompanied by high alcohol intake and frequent smoking may be associated with the prediction of IC in male subjects
2. Frequent coffee consumption and high alcohol intake also induced the predicted occurrence of insomnia IC in females.

After taking into account other factors, researchers emphasized that coffee consumption may be an essential risk factor for IC in adolescents. They had a significant affects on the association of smoking, alcohol, and marijuana with IC.

Additionally, in the study conducted by the Instituto Politécnico de Viseu included 6,919 students from the 7th to the 12th grade from 26 secondary schools, in 2012 with data collected, using a self-administered questionnaire, researchers filed the following results
1. The prevalence of symptoms of insomnia was 21.4 %, and the prevalence of insomnia was 8.3 %
2. After adjustment for gender and age, insomnia affects mostly the female gender
3. Coffee and alcohol consumption showed a significant risk of insomnia with an adjusted relative risk of 1.63

According to the finding information, Dr. Amaral MO, the lead author said, " The main risk factors for insomnia among these adolescents are gender (female), age (≥ 16 years), depression, and coffee and alcohol consumption, which is also in concordance with those in the literature".

Furthermore, in rats, radiotelemetry transmitters with electroencephalogram and electromyogram electrodes implanted for sleep recording in animals administered with caffeine alone (10 mg/kg) or in combination with zolpidem (10 mg/kg) or trazodone (20 mg/kg), or vehicle, in crossover experiments with 12 healthy male volunteers in a randomized, placebo-controlled, 4-week crossover study, caffeine injection group showed a significant prolongation in objective sleep onset latency (SOL) with disruption in subjective measures of sleep onset caused by the caffeine in rats and humans in compared to other groups.

Taking together, coffee and coffee caffeine may have a disruptive effect on induced insomnia and symptoms of insomnia, particularly in female, therefore women who have a history of insomnia should reduce intake of coffee or only drink them in the morning at a reduced amount.
