Black or common beans with abundant fiber may be considered functional foods in an induced weight loss of obese and overweight subjects, some scientists suggested.
Weight loss is a decrease in body weight regardless of circumstances. However, healthy weight loss is a gradual weight reduction through exercise, diet change, and lifestyle without affecting the nutrients intake.
Losing weight is not easy, and it takes commitment. Even 5% or 10% of weight loss may have a significant effect on improving your health. A step-by-step guide is also necessary to get you on the right track.
The CDC said,, " if you weigh 200 pounds, a 5 percent weight loss equals 10 pounds, bringing your weight down to 190 pounds. While this weight may still be in the “overweight” or “obese” range, this modest weight loss can decrease your risk factors for chronic diseases related to obesity"(5).
Some researchers suggested over weight and obesity are associated to increase risk of short and long-term health problems.
According to the National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, overweight and obesity are associated with compilations of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and strokes,..... and certain types of cancer.
BMI can be a helpful tool to determine whether you are underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.
* Underweight if MBI is less than 18.5
* Normal weight if BMI is in the range of 18.5 to 24.9
* Overweight: if BMI is in the range from 25 to 29.9
* Obesity if BMI is 30 or higher
According to statistics, approximately, over 68% of Americans are either overweight or obese.
and Americans spent over $60 billion a year to purchase diet programs and products.
Black bean, small roughly ovoid legumes with glossy black shells, genus Phaseolus, belongings to the family Fabaceae can buy in most grocery stores all around the year in dried and canned forms.
It is believed that black bean was the first domesticated growth in South America.
In the review of the literature database, researchers at the University of Exeter found that injection of black beans exerted a statistically significant weight loss through the reduction of body fat in compared placebo groups(1).
In the study of dried beans in reduced risk of cardiovascular disease in obese subjects, researchers found that black bean-fed Sprague-Dawley rats and diet-induced obesity model in C57Bl/6 mice treated groups experienced significant weight loss through improved plasma lipid profile within a 12 d time frame.
Dr. Zhu Z, the lead author said, "These findings support the use of short-term (7-14 d) assays to investigate mechanisms that account for the cardioprotective and weight regulatory effects of dry bean and to screen dry bean germplasm resources for types of bean with high protective activity'(2).
In fact, a review literature obtained from the electronic databases PubMed, SpringerLink, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and MEDLINE with full text (via EBSCOHost) during late 2012 - early January 2013, showed that botanical ingredients from part of Phaseolus vulgaris and extract isolated from plants exhibited a potentially promising therapeutic effects in appetite controlled and weight loss.
Indeed, intake of the high amounts of dietary fiber has shown statistically significant benefits for the reduction of body weight and risk factors in developed complications, such as gallstones.
Taking together, black bean, a common bean species hold a potential value in weight loss and weight management through the expression of appetite controlled and prevented weight loss induced complications.
However, further studies are necessary to determine the magnitude of the effects, optimal dosage, mechanisms of action, long-term safety, and potential side effects of crude extracts.

#Phytochemical Alliin Inhibits Parameters Associated with the Risk of #MetabolicSyndrome, Researchers Find
By Kyle J. Norton
Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions including obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
In other words, if you have 3 of conditions of obesity, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, elevated blood sugar, and low HDL cholesterol, you are at an increased risk of CVD and diabetes.
Epidemiological studies suggested people who are overweight and obesity and physical inactivity and have a condition of insulin resistance are most likely to have metabolic syndrome developing.
In unpreventable risk factors such as aging, ethnicity, and a dietary carbohydrate, with a lower intake of crude fiber are also found in people with the condition.
According to the statistics, among US adults aged 18 years or older, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome rose by more than 35%. From 1988–1994 to 2007–2012, the condition increased from 25.3% to 34.2%.
Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of metabolic syndrome, some researchers suggested the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades may be the major culprit in inducing the rise of the metabolic syndrome, globally.
Dr. Mohammad G. Saklayen in the investigation of the global epidemic of the metabolic syndrome said, "Though it started in the Western world, with the spread of the Western lifestyle across the globe, it has become now a truly global problem. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome is often more in the urban population of some developing countries than in their Western counterparts.
And, " The two basic forces spreading this malady are the increase in consumption of high calorie-low fiber-fast food and the decrease in physical activity due to mechanized transportations and sedentary form of leisure time activities".
The results strongly suggested if you are a Western diet follower, your risk of metabolic syndrome increase many folds compared to those of traditional diet.
Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.
On finding a natural ingredient with anti-metabolic syndrome activity, researchers examined the synthetic form of S-ally-mercapto captopril (CPSSA), a new stable synthetic compound produced by the composition of allicin and captopril.
In the fructose-induced metabolic syndrome rat model, alliin at 8 mg/kg-day exerted a significant effect by inhibiting the expression of metabolic parameters such as insulin, triglycerides, and homocysteine concentrations with a lesser effect of SBP
Compared to alliin, Captopril (50mg/(kg day)) only improved blood pressure and homocysteine.
Compared to a low dose of CPSSA (5mg/(kg day)) that lowered SBP but did not improve any other measured parameter, a higher dose (50mg/(kg day)) showed a significantly decreased blood pressure, triglycerides, and homocysteine concentrations.
The results strongly suggested that CPSSA, the combination of alliin and captopril may be used for the reducing risk of metabolic syndrome.
In the examination of treatment strategies for MetS including pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic options, associated with the use of nutraceuticals, most of which have plant origins (phytochemicals), accompanied by lifestyle improvement, researchers found that alliin from garlic with an adequate dose should improve a number of the MetS components.
Taken altogether, alliin used alone or combined with conventional medicine may be considered supplements for prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of alliin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#GreenTea #Theanine In the Promotion of #TobaccoCessation, According to Researchers
By Kyle J. Norton
Green tea mixed with tobacco can significantly improve chronic cigarette smokers to quit smoking naturally, some scientists suggested.
Smoking has a history in many cultures dating back as early as 5000 BC. Europeans who arrived in America in the 16th century quickly transformed the land to cultivate these plants for commercial profits and encourage consumption.
Our ancestors used tobacco smoke as a healing practice and enhanced pleasure. However, according to the study of the University of Manchester(4), our ancestors also use tobacco for healing purposes.
* Tobacco medical use that is administered externally includes bites of poisonous reptiles and insects; hysteria; pain, neuralgia; laryngeal spasm; gout; growth of hair; tetanus; ringworm; rodent ulcers; ulcers; wounds; a respiratory stimulant.
* Tobacco medical use that is administered by the rectum includes constipation; hemorrhoidal bleeding
* Tobacco medical use that is administered internally, includes strangulated hernia (smoke by mouth); malaria or intermittent fever; dislodging obstructive material from the esophagus by inducing vomiting. And
* Tobacco medical use by inhalation includes nasal polyps.
Sadly, the medical use of tobacco now is considered nonexistence. At of today statistic, tobacco smoking including cigarettes is causing over 3 million deaths a year worldwide, and if current smoking trends continue the annual mortality will exceed 10 million by around 2030, Dr. Anne Charlton, the author of the study suggested(4).
Continuously, the doctor said, " Tobacco leaves and the smoke generated when they are burned contain over 4 thousand chemicals, the best known of which is nicotine, first isolated from tobacco leaves in 1828 by Posselt and Reimann. It is the nicotine that causes smokers to become addicted to tobacco, and the chemical itself is lethal in small doses".
According to a statistic from the CDC, more than 4 out of 10 (45.5%) of all high school students who smoke tried to stop smoking in the past 12 months. Since 2002, the number of former smokers has been greater than the number of current smokers in the US(5).
Truly, a high percentage of smokers try to quit, however, smokers who successfully quit smoke are quite low because nicotine is highly addictive.
Green tea contains more amount of antioxidants than any drinks or foods with the same volume, and the leaves of Camellia sinensis, undergo minimal oxidation during processing, and originated from China.
In the study to test the effects of tea filters in promoting tobacco cessation in volunteers smokers, researchers found that smoking tobacco with tea filter successfully decreased cigarette consumption of participants by 56.5%, and 31.7% of them stopped smoking(1).
Further analysis of tea filter effects suggested the results may be attributed to the tea filter's bioactive chemical theanine in exerting anti-tobacco and nicotine addiction activities.
Dr. Yan J, the lead author said, "This work identified a new method and material, tea filter and theanine, which inhibit tobacco and nicotine addiction and provide an effective strategy for treating tobacco addiction"(1).
Additionally, in the review of clinical studies evaluating herbals use for smoking cessation from databases from its inception to October 2012. Studies are restricted to only English or Thai, researchers indicated that out of a total of 7 studies met inclusion criteria; 6 studies were a randomized trial (RCT) evaluating a variety of herbals.
According to the smoking cessation measured with various methods including the number of cigarettes per day, abstinence rate, expired CO level, and urine cotinine level at the 3 and 6-month follow-up, application of mixed herbal tea showed a statistically significant effect in reduced numbers of cigarettes smoked per day, nicotine craving, and total withdrawal scale but not urinary cotinine excretion(2).
However, Dr. Kitikannakorn N, the lead scientists, after taking into account of other co and confounders said, "Evidence supporting the role of complementary medicines as an anti-smoking is limited. Further research in this field would benefit from the standardization of herbal products to implement standard interventions and outcome measurement for smoking cessation".
Interestingly, according to the study by the Science China Life Sciences to test the effect of green tea lace in a cigarette in increased smoke cessation probability, researchers found that custom-designed cigarettes laced with green tea components exerted a significant effect in reduced smoking cravings.
After 2 months of smoking this unique cigarette, researchers found that smoker reduced their smoking intake by 52% compared to control.
These results be of successful may be attributed to green tea bioactive amino acid L-Theanine, uniquely found in green tea that processes clinical proven anti-stress effects and acts as a relaxing agent(3).
Prince Philip, a lecturer in the Community Oncology Division of the Malabar Cancer Centre, said, "The study conducted in China shows that green tea may be an alternative to quit this addictive habit".
Taking all together, green tea used cigarette lace may be considered as a secondary and therapeutic treatment in increasing the chance of quitting smoking. However, how many people have the money to order these types of customer designed cigarette?. Probably, we may stick to cold turkey quitting? nicotine patch?

#Healthyfood #NavyBean Inhibits the Risk of High Blood Cholesterol in Clincal Trials
By Kyle J. Norton
Cholesterol is a way substance produced by the liver or from food sources that play an important role to build strong cell membranes and producing steroid hormone and vitamin D and aiding the digestive tract in absorbing the nutrients our body needs.
Hyperlipidemia is also one of conditions found in the cluster of metabolic syndrome.
In a healthy individual, excess cholesterol is returned to the liver after performing the aforementioned function by high-density lipoprotein or "good cholesterol".
However, a prolonged period of overexpression of abnormal blood cholesterol due to excessive consumption of fat or reduced levels of "good cholesterol" in the bloodstream can cause plaque building up on the arterial wall, leading to heart disease and stroke.
Depending on the choice of diet, your risk of high blood cholesterol can be increased or decreased.
The healthy ratio of blood cholesterol is 4 (low-density lipoprotein) to 1 (high-density lipoprotein).
If your ratio is lower than 4, you are considered to have a healthy blood-cholesterol ratio.
Hyperlipidemia is preventable. If you have high blood cholesterol, reducing bad fat intake accompanied by an increased intake of "good cholesterol" with moderate exercise can be helpful.
More precisely, by changing to a healthy diet and lifestyle with moderate exercise, you are at a lower risk of high blood cholesterol sometime in the future (weeks or months, depending on the levels of blood cholesterol today).
People who follow the Western diet with a high in saturated and trans fat, red meat, processed food, and low in fruits and vegetables and whole grains may have a substantially increased risk of abnormally high blood cholesterol.
According to the article "Western Diet and Heart Risk", the author wrote, "Western diets cause a third of heart attack deaths worldwide,” the Daily Mail reports. Western-style diets high in meat, fat, dairy, and salt put people at higher risk of a heart attack. According to the newspaper, a study has found that poor diet is responsible for 30% of the risk of heart disease".
The small, white navy bean, also called pea bean or haricot, popular in both dry and green forms, is very popular in Britain and the US, native to Peru. It is now grown and consumed across the world, due to its numerous health benefits.
In finding a dietary source for the treatment of high blood cholesterol, researchers examined whether cooked navy bean powder (NBP) and/or heat-stabilized rice bran (RB) supplementation is tolerable, improves dietary fiber intake in children, and modulates lipid profiles.
The study included children aged 8 to 13 years at risk for CVD due to abnormal lipids. In other words, all participants were diagnosed with elevated cholesterol levels including total cholesterol ≥180 mg/dL and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) <60 mg/dL; low-density lipoprotein (LDL) ≥100 mg/dL and HDL <60 mg/dL; or non-HDL >100 mg/dL and HDL <60 mg/dL.
Participants received muffins or a smoothie daily that included 0 g NBP or RB (control), 17.5 g NBP, 15 g RB, or a combination of 9 g NBP + 8 g RB. Fasting blood was collected at baseline and week 4.
Only 38 children completed the trial, including n = 9 control, n = 10 NBP, n = 9 RB, and n = 10 NBP + RB groups.
Additionally, participants in the intervention groups significantly increased intake of NBP and RB at week 4 (p≤.01), particularly increased fibers in NBP and NBP + RB groups from baseline to week 4.
Based on the tested assays, HDL-cholesterol was higher in NBP-group participants compared to the control at week 4.
Although other lipid parameters also showed signs of decreasing, they are insignificantly due to the
shorter duration of the experiment (4 weeks).
In other words, higher daily intakes are needed for a longer duration to induce favorable changes across multiple serum lipid parameters.
Taken altogether, the navy bean may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of high blood cholesterol, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

(2) Western diet and heart risk, Tuesday, October 21, 2008, by NHS

#Herbal #Ashwagandha in The Improvement of #MuscleMass and #MuscleStrength In Exercise, According to Studies
By Kyle J. Norton
The Muscle is a soft tissue in the body containing protein filaments of actin and myosin that slide past one another, with a function to produce force and motion.
In other words, muscle contraction and expansion that changes both the length and the shape allow us to move and lift.
Muscle mass is the calculation of the weight of the muscles in the body in kilograms or pounds. However, other factors may also interfere with the above calculation including height, ethnicity, and fitness level.
Increased muscle mass is associated with lower fat accumulation and the ability to burn calories/energy.
Some researchers suggested, by boosting your muscle mass, you will also improve your health, including* Boosting your metabolism. Dr. Alexandra C. McPherron, the lead scientist said, "Increasing skeletal muscle mass by inhibiting signaling of myostatin, a transforming growth factor β (TGFβ) family member that negatively regulates muscle growth, prevents the development of diabetes in a mouse model of lipodystrophy. Muscle-specific myostatin inhibition also prevented hyperphagia suggesting muscle may regulate food intake".
In other words, increasing muscle mass improves your body's metabolism.
* Improves Bone Mass. Dr. Colletti LAand colleagues said, "additional evidence that muscle-building exercise is associated with increases in BMD at weight-bearing sites but not at on weight-bearing sites".
* Reduces fat accumulation. Dr. Silva TR, the lead scientist wrote, "Skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) was positively correlated with physical activity (r = 0.205, P = 0.038) and protein intake (r = 0.334, P = 0.001), and negatively correlated with waist circumference (r = -0.505, P < 0.001) and %body fat (r = 0.808, P < 0.001)".
Ashwagandha, also known as Withania somnifera, is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean. The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
On finding a potent anti-aging compound, researchers examined the effects of ashwagandha root extract on muscle mass and strength in healthy young men engaged in resistance training.
The randomized, prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study included 57 young male subjects (18-50 years old) with little experience in resistance training randomized into treatment received 300 mg of ashwagandha root extract twice daily, (29 subjects) and placebo, consumed starch placebos (28 subjects) groups.
Besides baseline measurements, both groups also underwent resistance training for 8 weeks with measurements repeated at the end of week 8.
Based on the results of measurement of the participants in both groups, compared to the placebo, the treatment group showed significantly greater increases in i
* In muscle strength on the bench-press exercise (Placebo: 26.4 kg vs. Ashwagandha: 46.0 kg)
* In the leg-extension exercise (Placebo: 9.8 kg) vs. Ashwagandha: 14.5 kg)
* In muscle size increase at the arms (Placebo: 5.3 cm(2) vs. Ashwagandha: 8.6 cm(2))
* In chest (Placebo: 1.4 cm vs. Ashwagandha: 3.3 cm).
Furthermore, the ashwagandha-treated group also had a significantly greater reduction of exercise-induced muscle damage.
Moreover, Ashwagandha treated group also showed a significantly greater increase in testosterone level (Placebo: 18.0 ng/dL Ashwagandha: 96.2 ng/dL)
More importantly, there was a significantly greater decrease in body fat percentage in the treatment group compared to placebo (Placebo: 1.5% vs. Ashwagandha: 3.5%).
Based on the finding, researchers wrote, "Ashwagandha supplementation is associated with significant increases in muscle mass and strength and suggests that ashwagandha supplementation may be useful in conjunction with a resistance training program".
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be used as a supplement for the improvement of muscle mass and strength in the resistance training program, pending the results from the large sample size and multicenter study

#Healthyfood #Kidneybeans Reduces the Risk of Diabetes by Inhibiting the Early Onset of Hyperglycemia and Hyperinsulinemia
By Kyle J. Norton
Intake of common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), including kidney beans, may reduce the risk, risk of complications, and treatment of diabetes, a recent study suggested.
Diabetes is a medical condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose, as the result of cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.
Kidney beans with kidney shape, strong flavor, and color of reddish-brown in nature are often an excellent dietary selection with no cholesterol, but a good source of protein and minerals.
According to the Research and Graduate Studies in Food Science, School of Chemistry, although cooking induced a significant decrease of total phenolic, tannins, and anthocyanins content, the group fed with common bean not only showed protection of pancreatic ß-cells but also displayed a significant reduction of blood glucose (22.8 %), triglycerides (21.9 %), total cholesterol (29.9 %) and LDL (56.1 %).
Dr. Hernández-Saavedra D, the lead author said, "The preventive-treatment group did not inhibit the increase of TNF-α(In the relation of inflammation) and IL-1β(the inflammatory cytokines) whereas the treatment group did, compared to the diabetic control".
Another study in the support of bean species such as pinto, black, navy, or kidney in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, suggested that intake of beans showed a potential health effect in reduced glycaemic stress in expression of hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia, the early stage of diabetes.
In a total of 17 men and women with type 2 diabetes controlled by metformin (n = 14) or diet/exercise (n = 3) aged 35-70 years participated in the randomized 4 × 4 crossover trial, in the testing the effects on white long-grain rice control, pinto beans/rice, black beans/rice, red kidney beans/rice test meals, matched for 50 grams of available carbohydrate, after a 12-hour fasting, the group treated with dark red kidney showed an attenuated glycemic response compared to rice alone.
Taking together, the consumption of kidney beans as traditional foods may provide non-pharmaceutical management and treatment of type 2 diabetes and improve dietary adherence with cultural groups.

#Healthyfood #ManukaHoney Processes a Treatment for Severe Atopic Contact Dermatitis Eczematous Reaction, Researchers Reveal
By Kyle J. Norton
In seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have found a herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of atopic dermatitis, according to studies.
Atopic dermatitis or eczema is an inflammatory condition associated with red and itchy skin.
Most cases of atopic dermatitis are found in children. However, adults may also get it too. Skin irritation is found more often in children compared to adults.
The causes of atopic dermatitis are unknown. Some researchers suggested that certain risk factors such as genetic preposition and abnormal function of the immune system and environmental conditions may be involved in the development of the disease.
Epidemiological studies suggested that most patients with chronic atopic dermatitis also have asthma and hay fever, particularly in allergies.
Some researchers suggested that atopic dermatitis is more common in people who live in the air pollution city.
Dr. Ahn K in the study of the role of air pollutants in atopic dermatitis, wrote, " Both indoor and outdoor air pollution, which are of increasing concern with urbanization, are well-known environmental risk factors for asthma, whereas there is relatively little evidence in AD".
And, " epidemiologic and experimental data on the role of air pollution in patients with AD. Recent evidence suggests that a variety of air pollutants, such as environmental tobacco smoke, volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde, toluene, nitrogen dioxide, and particulate matter, act as risk factors for the development or aggravation of AD. These air pollutants probably induce oxidative stress in the skin, leading to skin barrier dysfunction or immune dysregulation".
The results clearly suggested the risk of atopic dermatitis increases with air pollutants.
Honey, the rich golden liquid is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.
The liquid is considered one of the healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.
Researchers in the course to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of dermatitis examined the Manuka honey anti-skin conditions and dermal injuries.
Injection of Manuka honey showed a significant potency in the treatment of a severe atopic contact dermatitis eczematous reaction with no side effects.
Furthermore, adult volunteers with bilateral atopic dermatitis (AD) were asked to apply MH on one site overnight for seven consecutive days and leave the contralateral site as untreated as possible.
There are no significant changes in the skin staphylococci observed after day 7, irrespective of honey treatment.
However, MH treatment showed significant inhibition of proinflammatory cytokines in a dose-dependent manner.
The application of MK also inhibited mast cell degranulation against the onset of atopic dermatitis (AD).
Dr. Alangari AA, the lead scientist said in the final report, "MH is potentially effective in the treatment of AD lesions based on both clinical and cellular studies through different mechanisms".
Taken altogether, Manuka honey may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD) with no side effects, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.
