Antioxidants are stable atoms that inhibit oxidation caused by free radicals.
Free radicals, on the other hand, are unstable atoms with an unpaired electron in the outermost ring.
Therefore, for them to achieve stability, free radicals are always ready to intercept or donate an electron to other stable atoms, leading to a cascade that cannot be stopped until all electrons in the outermost ring are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.
Overexpression of free radicals in the long-term can lead to oxidative stress, leading to proteins and lipids and cell damage in facilitating the onset of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neuro diseases,... and cancers.
Most cases of oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance of the ratio of the levels of free radicals and antioxidant.
Believe it or not, free radicals in a moderate amount and in the control of the presence of antioxidants are essential for the body in food and energy metabolism and blood circulation.
Dr. V. Lobo, the lead scientist in the evaluation of "Free radicals, antioxidants, and functional foods: Impact on human health". wrote, "Free radicals reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species are generated by our body by various endogenous systems, exposure to different physiochemical conditions or pathological states. A balance between free radicals and antioxidants is necessary for proper physiological function".
And, " Synthetic antioxidants such as butylated hydroxytoluene and butylated hydroxyanisole have recently been reported to be dangerous for human health. Thus, the search for effective, nontoxic natural compounds with antioxidative activity has been intensified in recent years".
The results suggested, by maintaining an adequate amount of functional foods (not synthetic antioxidants) with plenty of antioxidants, oxidative stress may be preventable.
Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.
To find the potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the antioxidant activity of bioactive compound alliin.
Compared to garlic compounds representing the four main chemical classes, alliin, allyl cysteine, allyl disulfide, and allicin, prepared by chemical synthesis or purification, researchers found that alliin showed a better-scavenged superoxide property, particularly in hydroxyl radicals compared to others compound.
Allicin, a derivative of alliin suppressed the formation of superoxide by the xanthine/xanthine oxidase system, probably via a thiol and allicin exchange mechanism in the prevention of the formation of free radicals.
However, Alliin and allicin did not prevent induced microsomal lipid peroxidation.
In other words, alliin is an antioxidants antioxidant with a free radical scavenging property.
Dr. Chung LY said in the final report, "Allyla disulfide, alliin, allicin, and allyl cysteine exhibit different patterns of antioxidant activities as protective compounds against free radical damage".
In bone resorption associated with osteoclast differentiation and fusion, alliin (S-allyl-l-cysteine sulfoxides, SACSO) displayed a significant antioxidant activity by inhibiting the osteoclastogenesis in a dose-dependent manner via blocking the (c-Fos-NFATc1) signaling pathway involved cell differentiation and fusion.
Furthermore, alliin protected bone density by decreasing the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inhibiting the expression of (NADPH oxidase 1 (Nox1)) protein associated with elevated ROS reactive oxygen.
Taken altogether, alliin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of diseases involved in oxidative stress, pending confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of alliin in a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Topical #Curcumins Found in #Turmeric Speed Up Skin Wound-Healing in Vivos, Researchers Suggest
By Kyle J. Norton
The skin wound is a condition that damages the layers of the skin.
Most cases of skin wounds can be treated by washing and disinfecting the wound and applying pressure to control the bleeding following by a sterile dressing or bandage. Very minor wounds may heal without a bandage.
In more serious cases, stitched by the professionals may be needed to prevent excessive bleeding.
Mose cases of the skin wound are healed within a few days or weeks.
Skin wound can be classified into 2 types
1. Abrasion is a skin injury caused by rubbing or scraping against a rough or hard surface.
Most cases of abrasion do not involve a lot of bleeding. However, skincare must be taken to prevent infection
2. A laceration is a deep cut or tearing of your skin caused by accidents with knives, tools. Deep lacerations can induce heavy bleeding which stitches are normally required.
Symptoms of a skin wound are bruising or swelling, itching and redness. Use of over counter pain medicine and applying ice on the wound can be helpful.
Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
In finding a natural compound for the treatment of skin wounds, researchers examined the effect of topical curcumin on the healing of skin wounds produced by the CO(2) laser in an animal model.
A prospective, randomized study conducted by the University of Murcia included a total of 270 wounds were made (3 wounds by animal) of 90 mice assigned to three groups (30 animals per group), with the creation of 6-mm incisions in the skin of the dorsal region by means of the CO(2) laser.
Then all mice were assigned to
* Group I, (control group) with no product applied to the resulting wound
* Group II, vehicle 5 mg/day was applied to the wound and
* Group III, topical curcumin of 5 mg/day was applied to the wound
During the experiment, researchers found that* Incomplete re-epithelialization was found in all wounds (treated or untreated) after 2 days
* After 7 days, 73.33% of the wounds treated with curcumin presented re-epithelialization covering the entire wound, with irregular thickness; nevertheless, compared to only 37.50% of the wounds in the control group and 41.67% in the vehicle group.
In an inflammatory perspective, there are no significant differences regarding the resolution of the inflammatory process in any of the study groups after 2, 7, and 14 days.
These results strongly suggested that topical curcumin speeds up the healing process after 7 days.
Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the treatment of skin, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of curcumin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Ashwagandha Gobbles Up #OvarianCancer Cells in Vitro, According to Studies
By Kyle J. Norton
Cancer is a group of medical diseases characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissue or specific organ in the body due to the alternation of cell DNA.
The ovaries formed part of the women's reproductive system are the reproductive organs that connect to the fallopian tubes and attach to the outer layer of the uterus via the ovarian ligament. Usually, the left and right ovaries take a turn to releasing an egg every month at the mid-point of each menstrual cycle.
Furthermore, the ovaries also produce the female hormones estrogen and progesterone.
Ovarian cancer is medical a condition caused by abnormal cells growth of ovarian cells that start on the surface of the inner lining of the ovary. Over time, the oversize tumor can travel a distance away to infect the nearby organ and tissue via fluid and blood circulation.
Ovarian cancer is one of the fifth most common cancer, accounting for more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system in the US, according to the statistics. The lifetime risk of getting ovarian cancer in a woman is about 1 in 78, comapred to the lifetime of dying from ovarian cancer risk of 1 in 108.
The causes of ovarian cancer are not clearly defined. However, epidemiologically, family history, BRCA genetic preposition, never being pregnant or giving birth, tall adult height, hormone replacement therapy, smoking, and exposure to asbestos are some prevalent factors found in patients with the disease.
The most common symptoms of ovarian cancer are abdominal bloating, pressure in the pelvis or lower back, a frequent or urgent need to urinate and/or constipation, changes in bowel movements, and increased abdominal girth accompanied by general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.
The epithelial ovarian tumor is the most common form of ovarian cancer that is arisen from the cell on the surface of the ovary, accounting for over 90% of ovarian cancer of all cases, including serious tumors, endometrioid tumors, and mucinous cystadenocarcinoma.
Germ cell ovarian cancer found in the censor of the egg-producing cells within the ovary and sex cord-stromal ovarian cancer that occur in children and teens as a result of birth defects is 2 other types of ovarian cancer.
Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean. The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of ovarian cancer with no side effects, researchers investigated the effects withaferin A (WFA), a bioactive compound isolated from the plant Withania somnifera, when used alone or in combination with cisplatin (CIS) on chemo-resistance of cancer stem cells (CSCs).
The study included nude mice bearing orthotopic ovarian tumors generated by injecting human ovarian epithelial cancer cell line (A2780), administration of WFA and cisplatin (WFA) alone or in combination, showed a 70 to 80% reduction in tumor growth and complete inhibition of metastasis, compared to untreated controls.
WFA (2 mg/kg) injection resulted in a highly significant elimination of cells expressing CSC markers such as genes associated with cell-to-cell interaction, growth and differentiation signaling, and cell proliferation.
Furthermore, genes involved in cancer promotion, metastasis, multidrug resistance, and proliferation are also inhibited by the WFA, compared to no effect of mice treated with CIS alone (6 mg/kg).
In other words, CIS alone (6 mg/kg) inhibited CSC without affecting the aforementioned genes. These may explain the recurrence of cancer in patients treated with carboplatin and paclitaxel.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "WFA alone or in combination with CIS eliminates putative CSCs, we conclude that WFA in combination with CIS may present more efficacious therapy for ovarian cancer".
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of ovarian cancer, pending to the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Curcuminoids Found in #Turmeric Reduce the Risk of #Neurological Damage, Researchers Say
By Kyle J. Norton
Neurological disorders are class of diseases associated with the brain, and the spinal cord including the nerves that connect them.
Most common diseases of neurological disorders are dementia, including ALS. PD, Alzheimer's disease, birth defects of the brain and spinal cord, brain injury and tumor.
Back pain associated with related nerve damage is one of the common complaints in the US that send many patients to seek help from their doctor. Believe it or not, 80% of the US population will experience back pain at some time in their lives.
There is no single cause of neuro-dysfunction. Lifestyle, infections, genetics, and nutrition-related disease, environment, and physical injuries have been found to be some major prevalent factors that induce the onset of neurological abnormalities.
Furthermore, neurological disorders have been found to facilitate psychological symptoms such as anxiety and depression and physical symptoms, depending totally on the neurons affected, including partial or complete paralysis muscle weakness seen in post-stroke patients, difficulty reading and writing, and poor cognitive abilities such as patients with dementia.
According to the American Addiction Center, if you experience some of the below symptoms persistently, including headaches, blurry vision, persistent fatigue, changes in behavior, numbness in the legs or arms, changes in coordination or balance weakness, slurred speech and tremors, you should seek help from the professionals immediately, as these may be the first signs of neurological disorders.

On finding a potent compound for the treatment of neurological disease, researchers examined Curcuminoids, polyphenol compounds from turmeric (Curcuma longa) effect on Alzheimer's disease (AD).
According to the tested analysis,* Curcuminoids attenuate mitochondrial dysfunction-induced neurons oxidative stress and inflammatory responses in patients with AD.
* The bioactive compound inhibited the immune response in the promotion of the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as COX-2, and iNOS.
* Furthermore, curcuminoids also bind to β-amyloid (Aβ) plaques to inhibit amyloid accumulation and aggregation in the brain of AD patients.
* More importantly, the expression of the toxic Aβ oligomer formation and oligomer-dependent Aβ toxicity was also inhibited by the injection of curcuminoids.
Curcuminoids efficacy of in patients with AD was also found in diseases associated with multiple sclerosis (MS), glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), particularly in the prevention α-synuclein aggregation in Parkinson's disease (PD).
Additionally, neurological damage caused by heavy metal poisoning was also attenuated by the injection of curcuminoids.
Based on the results, researchers wrote, " These results demonstrate curcuminoids may be potentially effective therapeutic means to treat neurodegenerative diseases. A bulk of patents discloses methods to improve the bioavailability of curcuminoids for therapeutic development".
Taken altogether, turmeric-processed abundantly bioactive compound curcuminoids may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of neurological diseases, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Ashwagandha Exhibits Anti #LungCancer Through Growth Inhibition and Cytotoxic Activity in Vitro, Scientists Suggest
By Kyle J. Norton
Cancer is a class of diseases caused by cell growth and multiplication disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of the DNA.
After colonizing the entire tissues of the specific organ, the oversize tumor cell can travel a distance away from the originated site to invade other healthy tissues, via lymph or blood.
The most advanced stage of cancer may result in the death of the patients.
The lung is a vital organ located near the backbone on either side of the heart with major functions to inhale oxygen from the air to the bloodstream that nourishes the body cells and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.
Other functions of the lung are to maintain the right levels of pH, filter out blood clots, and protect the heart against shock, infection, and speech.
Lung cancer is a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. The most common form of primary lung cancers is derived from epithelial cells.
According to the statistics provided by the American Lung Cancer Association, lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in both men and women in the U.S. In 2018, 154,050 Americans died from lung cancer in 2018, accounting for approximately 25 percent of all cancer deaths.
The exact causes of lung cancer are unknown. However, passive smoking, and tobacco smoking are 2 of the most common risk factors found in patients with the disease.
Other risk factors are
* Exposure to certain chemicals
The risk of lung cancer for people who inhale or expose to certain industrial chemicals such as radon gas, arsenic, chromium, and nickel,..in the workplace is substantially higher compared to non-exposures.
* Family history
The risk of lung cancer increased if one of the members of the direct family has lung cancer.
* Lung disease
The risk of lung cancer increases if you have or previously had certain types of lung disease
* Excessive drinking
According to the study by Freudenheim et al., R. Curtis Ellison MD suggested that alcohol intake of more than 2 drinks per day is associated with a small increased risk of lung cancer.
With an aim to find a potent ingredient for the treatment of lung cancer, researchers examined the effects of Withaferin A (WA) a bioactive lactone, isolated from Withania somnifera on lung tumor cells both in vitro and in vivo.
According to the tested differentiation, WA entered a significant anti-lung cancer cell activity by -mediating cytotoxicity involved in reactive oxygen species (ROS) expression.
On NSCLC cell line A549 compared to non-carcinoma WI-38 and PBMC cell lines as controls, WA induced oxidative damage to NSCLC cells without affecting much of normal cells in a dose-dependent manner.
In a comparison of the anti-lung cancer effect among a chlorinated steroidal lactone (27-acetoxy-4β,6α-dihydroxy-5β-chloro-1-oxowitha-2,24-dienolide), a diepoxy withanolide (5β,6β,14α,15α-diepoxy-4β,27-dihydroxy-1-oxowitha-2,24-dienolide), and withaferin A, researchers found that all 3 compounds exhibited growth inhibition and cytotoxic activity against human lung cancer cell line (NCI-H460).
Withaferin A was found to have a most effective activity at GI(50)=0.18 μg/mL and LC(50)=0.45 μg/mL) compared to the other 2 chemical constituents.
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha processed abundantly bioactive compounds that may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of lung cancer, pending the results of large sample size and multicenter study.

The Effects of #Phytochemical #Alliin on Serum High and Low-Density Lipoprotein levels in #Hyperlipidemia Patients, Researchers Say
By Kyle J. Norton
Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition of abnormally high levels of cholesterol and fat in the bloodstream.
High blood cholesterol is the most common cause of hyperlipidemia. According to statistics provided by the CDC, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older are living with high blood cholesterol with a total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL. and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL.
In other words, hyperlipidemia has a high prevalent ratio that affects over 100 million Americans and the condition is increasing at an alarming rate due to overweight and obesity.
Believe it or not, only half of the people with high blood cholesterol benefit from taking the lowering blood cholesterol medicine.
Cholesterol is a waxy substance produced by the liver. In a moderate amount, it helps to improve the gastrointestinal tract in food digestion, builds strong cell membranes, and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.
The healthy ratio of low-density lipoprotein (LDL)/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) is numbers that are less than 4.
People with hyperlipidemia are asymptomatic. However, if untreated, the condition can cause cholesterol build-up on the arterial wall, leading to the narrowing of the arteries and inducing blockage that causes heart disease and stroke.
Although there are many factors that can induce the expression of hyperlipidemia, some researchers suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades may have a significant implication on the onset of hyperlipidemia in the population in the US.
An article cited from the study by Tufts University wrote, "In two studies published online in the American Journal of Transplantation, researchers determined that hyperlipidemia accelerates heart-transplant rejection in mice. By using models that mimic the health conditions found in human transplant recipients, the researchers from Tufts determined that transplant rejection was accelerated whether the hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol and high triglycerides in the blood) was caused by genetics or solely by a high-fat diet".
Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide, a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belongings to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.
On finding a potential compound for the treatment of hyperlipidemia, researchers examined the bioactive compound alliin (S-allyl cysteine sulfoxide) derived from garlic in an animal model.
The study included C57BL/6J DIO mice randomly assigned to drinking water with or without alliin (0.1 mg/ml) for 8 weeks.
Based on the tested results, alliin exerted antihyperlipidemic activity with no significant effect on body weight, adiposity, or energy balance.
However, alliin treatment enhanced glucose homeostasis and increased insulin sensitivity.
The efficacy of alliin antihyperlipidemic effects was attributed to the alliin-induced balance of the intestinal microbiota composition, typically decreased Lachnospiraceae and increased Ruminococcaceae.
Collectively, researchers concluded," Alliin has nutraceutical or even medicinal potential in the prevention of diabetes and lipid metabolic disorders".
In other to find out more information about alliin hypolipidemic activity, researchers examined the effects of alliin on the lipid profile in a rabbit model.
The study included 19 New Zealand White rabbits who were fed a cholesterol-rich diet (0.25% cholesterol) for 18 weeks with 10 rabbits receiving freshly produced allicin (3 mg/kg orally) starting at 8 weeks, and nine receiving a placebo.
According to the results from tested assays, allicin produced by reacting alliin showed a significant effect on serum cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein concentrations compared to control in days dependent manner.
Additionally, levels of serum high-density lipoprotein levels were also improved between groups.
Dr. Eilat S, the lead scientist wrote, in the final report, "Allicin has a beneficial effect on the serum lipid profile in hyperlipidemic rabbits, and should be further tested clinically".
Taken altogether, alliin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia with no side effects, responding to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of alliin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Healthyfood #NavyBeans Directly Reduces Risk of #BreastCancer Depending on Amount Intakes, Researchers Say
By Kyle J. Norton
The breast is the tissue overlying the chest muscles. in women, breasts are made of specialized tissue that produces milk (glandular tissue) and fatty tissue. The size of the women's breasts is totally determined by the amount of fat.
Breast cancer is a medical condition associated with an alternation of cell DNA located either in the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.
Most cases of breast cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the breast before penetrating into deeper layers to form a tumor through cell cycle division.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in the U.S. approximately, 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime.
In 2019, approximately 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 62,930 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.
The most common symptoms of the early stage of breast cancer are a lump (mass) in the breast, a lump in the armpit (lymph nodes), nipple discharge (clear or bloody), an inverted or retracted nipple, scaly or pitted skin on the nipple persistent tenderness of the breast and unusual breast pain or discomfort.
If you experience some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.
The 5 years survival rate of breast cancer diagnosed at the early stage is close to 100%.
At the advanced stage, patients may also experience additional symptoms of bone pain (Secondary tumors in the bone), shortness of breath (Secondary tumors in the lung), unintentional weight loss and drop in appetite (Secondary tumors in the liver), and headaches, neurological pain or weakness (Secondary tumors in the nervous system).
The small, white navy bean, also called pea bean or haricot, popular in both dry and green forms, is very popular in Britain and the US, native to Peru. It is now grown and consumed across the world, due to its numerous health benefits.
In finding a potential compound for the treatment of breast cancer, researchers evaluated the high dietary fiber intake and breast cancer risk, particularly in hormone receptor‐negative breast cancer.
According to the returned food frequency data of a population‐based case-control study, including 2135 breast cancer cases (1070 Hispanics, 493 African Americans, and 572 non‐Hispanic Whites (NHWs)) and 2571 controls (1391 Hispanics, 557 African Americans, and 623 NHWs), high intake of bean fiber and total bean, including the navy bean reduced risk of breast cancer by 20% compared to those in the low quartile.
Furthermore, a high intake of bean fiber and total bean has a strong inverse association with ER‐PR‐ breast cancer. More precisely, the reduced risk of ER-PR breast cancer associated with high intake were ranging from 28 to 36%.
Believe it or not, fiber intake from vegetables and fruits or total intake of vegetables and fruits showed no effects on the reduced risk of the diseases.
In other words, adding a portion or 2 of the navy bean into your daily diet may have a significant effect on the prevention of breast cancer, particularly in hormone-related breast cancer
Based on the finding, researchers wrote in the final report, "A high dietary intake of bean fiber and fiber‐rich foods such as beans and grains may lower the risk of ER‐PR‐ breast cancer, an aggressive breast cancer subtype for which few risk factors have been identified".
Taken altogether, navy beans containing a high amount of fiber may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of hormone-related breast cancer pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
