The bladder is a hollow elastic organ in the center of the lower abdomen that collects urine from the kidneys and excreted them through the urethra.
Bladder cancer is the most common type of cancer that affects men twice as frequently as it affects women. Usually, bladder cancer starts from cells on the surface of the inner lining of the bladder caused by several types of malignant growths of the urinary bladder cells.
Depending on the cancer cell originated bladder cancer can be classified into
* Transitional cell carcinoma
Transitional cell carcinoma starts on the innermost tissue layer of the bladder. More than 90 percent of bladder cancers begin in the transitional cells
* Squamous cell carcinoma
Cancer begins in squamous cells found in the tissues of the surface of the bladder, due to long-term infection or irritation. About 8 percent of people with bladder cancers begin with squamous cells.
* Adenocarcinoma
Cancer begins originates in glandular tissue of the bladder, including the surface layer of skin, glands, and a variety of other tissue, due to long-term irritation and inflammation. Only 2 percent of people with the condition have a third bladder cancer type.
According to the statistics, most cases (90%) of bladder cancer are diagnosed in people older than 55, and the average age of people diagnosed with bladder cancer is 73 worldwide.
Believe it or not, bladder cancer will cause the death of 12,870 in men and 4,800 in women. Among men, bladder cancer is the eighth most common cause of cancer death.
Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.
With the aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of bladder cancer, researchers examined the effect of betacyanins (BC) purified from beetroot (Beta vulgaris var. Rubra L.) alone or in combination with vitexin-2-O-xyloside (XVX) from Beta vulgaris var. cicla L.on T24 bladder cancer cells.
According to the tested differentiation, the combination of BC and XVX exhibited a synergistic effect on the inhibition of proliferation in T24 cancer cells at 24 and 48 h but not after 72 h of incubation.
Furthermore, according to the observation of the means of fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) analysis, the combined treatment induced cancer cell apoptosis by activating the protein associated with cell death signaling.
In cell death analysis, the combination promoted the expression of genes involved in pro-apoptosis and inhibited the genes associated with anti-apoptosis in bladder cancer cell lines.
Moreover, the combined treatment also demonstrated strong activity in the induction of cytotoxicity against bladder cancer cells without affecting the normal human skin NCTC 2544 keratinocytes.
Based on the finding, Dr. Emanuele Salvatore Scarpa, the lead scientist wrote, "These results demonstrated the efficacy and the mechanisms of the action of BC and XVX, extracted from edible plants, and suggested that a diet or a nutrition supplement, enriched with these bioactive molecules, could be used in the prevention of human bladder cancer".
Taken altogether, betacyanins used alone or combined with herbal remedies may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of bladder cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of betacyanins in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Phytochemical S-Allyl Cysteine Sulphoxide (SACS, #Alliin) Increases the Antioxidant Activities Against Cardiotoxicity, According to Studies
By Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient for the prevention and treatment of cardiotoxicity with no side effects, according to studies.
Cardiotoxicity is a medical condition induced by damage to the heart muscle. The infected heart muscles may reduce the function of the heart in pumping blood, a condition that can lead to heart failure.
Most cases of cardiotoxicity are the results of long-term intake of certain medications such as chemotherapy. However, infected by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) genetic preposition, a malignant disease associated with the amyloid deposited on your heart or other organs, high blood pressure, untreated hyperthyroidism, and vitamin b2 deficiency are some prevalent factors found in patients with cardiotoxicity.
The most common symptoms of cardiotoxicity are associated with not enough blood circulation in the body such as tiredness and fatigue, a long-term (chronic) cough, shortness of breath, floating,
Physically, most patients with cardiotoxicity also experience symptoms of enlarged heart muscle examined by the chest X-ray, abnormal heart or lung sounds and swelling in your hands, and feet, or unusual weight gain.
Conventionally, treatment of cardiotoxicity depending on the cause of the disease may include
* Beta-blockers, for the improvement of the blood flow and reduction of palpitations, arrhythmias, and high blood pressure.
*ACE inhibitors induce (widen) arterial dilation and improvement of the blood flow.
* Diuretics, by getting rid of excess fluids that reduce heart function in blood pumping
Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide, a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of cardiotoxicity, researchers evaluated the preventive role of S-allyl cysteine sulphoxide (SACS, alliin) in isoproterenol (ISO)-induced cardiotoxicity in an animal model.
The study included male Wistar rats induced myocardial infarction by subcutaneous injection of isoproterenol (ISO) (150 mg/kg) once a day for 2 days, followed by the pretreatment of SACS (40 and 80 mg/kg) orally daily for a period of 35 days using an intragastric tube.
Pretreatment of SACS showed significantly lowered thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and increased levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.
The reduced levels of the concentration of reduced glutathione (GSH) in myocardial infarcted rats also increased with the injection of SACS.
SACS pretreatment also increased significantly the levels of mitochondrial phospholipids and decreased the levels of mitochondrial cholesterol, free fatty acids (FFAs), triglycerides (TGs), and calcium, and the activity of xanthine oxidase (XOD) in the heart, elevated conditions have been found to induce heart disease.
Where low levels of mitochondrial phospholipids have been found to involve heart failure.
Furthermore, SACS also increased the enzyme activity of oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondrial fraction of the heart.
Moreover, oral administration of SACS for a period of 35 days protected the heart function in the myocardial infarction without affecting the heart function in the normal control rats.
The findings strongly suggested the protective role of SACS against cardiotoxicity caused by subcutaneous injection of medication.
Dr. Sangeetha T, the leads scientist wrote in the final report, "The effect at a dose of SACS 80 mg/kg was more effective than the dose 40 mg/kg. The results of the study conclude that SACS protects the mitochondria of the ISO-induced myocardial-infarcted rats".
Taken altogether, alliin used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cardiotoxicity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Releases the Body Toxins through Increased Urine-Flow in Vivos, Researchers Find
By Kyle J. Norton
Scientists may have found a functional herbal medicine that processes a significant effect in promoting the secretion of toxins through increasing the urinary flow, some studies suggested.
The diuretic effect is the activity of substances that promote urinary secretion.
Many diuretics medicine can interfere with the functioning kidney in the regulation of the levels of water in the body, leading to worsening kidney function and abnormal electrolyte levels.
Certain medications that treat conditions of high blood pressure, glaucoma, and edema can damage kidney function by overworking the kidney in water release.
Dr. Yusra Habib Khan, the lead author in the study "Chronic Kidney Disease, Fluid Overload, and Diuretics: A Complicated Triangle" said, "The use of diuretics was associated with adverse renal outcomes indicated by the decline in eGFR (Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is a measure of the function of the kidneys) and increased risk of (renal replacement therapy) RRT initiation in our cohort of NDD-CKD patients".
Therefore, the intake of medicine that has a negative effect on kidney function and diuretics medicine should be taken with extreme care. If you are currently taking some of the above medicine, please make that you know the adverse effects.
Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is one of the species of Bearberry, in the genus Arctostaphylos, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.
The herb has been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic agent and to treat urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infections, kidney stones, pelvic pain, etc.
Besides the major constituents of phenolic glycoside arbutin, tannins, and flavonoids, herbal medicine also contains free hydroquinocoumaric acidaric acid, caffeic acid, salicylic acid, flavonoid quercetin, and triterpenes ursolic acid.
Because of increased awareness of conventional medication's side effects, there is increasing interest in the health and wellness benefits of herbs and botanicals. According to the Laboratoire de Pharmacognosy, in an animal study, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi and hydroalcoholic extracts increased urine flow. Urinary sodium excretion in rats.
The use of herbal diuresis should be taken with care and under professional prescription as the application may have a strong effect on the increase of urine flow rates to induce renal clearance of the toxicant.
In the article written by Michael E. Peterson DVM, MS, in Small Animal Toxicology (Third Edition), 2013, the author wrote, intoxications that are most likely to respond to force diuresis are those with a high level of renal excretion of the primary toxicant (e.g., bromide, lithium, amphetamine, phenobarbital, and salicylate).
Protein-bound toxins are not cleared efficiently by diuresis.
However, the patient must not be anuric or significantly oliguric
The primary problems associated with force diuresis include potential fluid overload and electrolyte abnormalities.
Michael E. Peterson DVM, MS, continued, "The practitioner should monitor for hyponatremia, hypokalemia, water intoxication, pulmonary edema, and cerebral edema. Additionally, some toxins such as tricyclic antidepressants and many sedative-hypnotics increase the patient’s susceptibility to interstitial pulmonary edema. Forced diuresis is contraindicated in these intoxications"
These results suggested that although herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi may be potent to detox the body toxin through increasing urinary secretion. However, caution should be taken to prevent damage to kidney and kidney function.
Please make sure you only take the Arctostaphylos uva-ursi extract with the permission of the specialists in the related field.
However, additional data collection large example size and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi diuretic possibilities.

#Healthyfood #Tomatoes Inhibit #ProinflammatoryCytokines that Cause #ColorectalCancer in Vitro and Vivo, Researchers Say
By Kyle J. Norton
Colorectal cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the colon or rectum.
Most cases of colorectal cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the colon or rectum, before penetrating into the deeper layer to induce localized tumors.
At the very early stage of colorectal cancer, most patients are asymptomatic due to the very size of the tumor which does not affect the function of the colon or rectum. However, at the advanced stage, the oversize tumor can press on the nearby blood vessels and nerves and affect the organ's functioning, leading to severe pain and bleeding and specific symptoms accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.
At this stage, cancer cells can also travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States. Proximately, in 2019, 101,420 new cases of colon cancer and 44,180 rectal cancer will be diagnosed.
The lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is about 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.
The 5-year survival rate of people with localized stage colorectal cancer is 90%. However, only 39% of patients are diagnosed at an early stage.
Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of colorectal cancer, some researchers suggested that the widespread of colorectal cancer in South Korea may be correlated with the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades, particularly in men.
Dr. Kim, Jeehyun, wrote, "In men, total fat intake was not associated with risk of colorectal adenoma. However, the risk of colorectal adenoma increased with higher saturated fatty acid (SFA) intake. The adjusted odds ratio in the highest quintile was 1.71 (95% confidence interval, 1.01–2.91) compared with that in the lowest quintile".
Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.
In the urgency to find a potential compound for the treatment of colon cancer, researchers investigated the effects of tomato powder (TP) on the development of azoxymethane (AOM)-induced colorectal cancer in Wistar rats.
According to the tested assays, TP added to feed at a 5% rate decreased the rate of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) associated with the early stage of colon cancer development and reduces the development of adenocarcinoma and growth of AOM-induced colorectal cancer in rats.
TP supplementation also demonstrated chemopreventive activities against the protein involved in the stimulating production of proinflammatory cytokines in the colon tissues and promoted cancer cell apoptosis.
Based on the findings, Dr. Tuzcu M, the lead scientist wrote, "Our findings identify an intimate connection between dietary supplementation of TP and the decreased risk of colorectal cancer in rats".
And "suggest that consumption of TP would be a natural candidate for the prevention of colorectal cancer in men".
Furthermore, according to the joint study led by the University of Almería, tomatoes showed significant time- and concentration-dependent inhibitory/cytotoxic effects on HT-29 cells.
Moreover, adding tomato carotenoids and olive oil to HT-29 cells in cultures demonstrated a better inhibitory effect compared to the application of individual compounds in CCD-18 normal cells.
In variety comparison, the Racimo tomato displayed the most anti-cancer activity against colorectal cancer cell proliferation compared to others, without affecting the normal CCD-18 cells.
In chemical analysis, olive oil and tomato carotenoids inhibited the HT-29 cancer cell proliferation synergistically compared to no effect of other phenolic compounds.
Taken altogether, tomatoes alone or combined with olive oil may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#GreenTea #PolyphenolsExtract Inhibits the Excessive Uric Acid That Cause Acute and Chronic Gout, Researchers Say
By Kyle J. Norton
Green tea may have a therapeutic and positive effect in blocking the onset and treatment of gout and recurrent gout, some scientists suggested.
Gout is a condition of recurrently inflammatory arthritis characterized by a red, tender, hot, and swollen joint caused by overexpression of purine in the body.
Gout is caused by an excess of uric acid in the blood, or hyperuricemia. Uric acid is a by-product that is produced during the digestive process in the breaking down of chemical ingredients purines.
Purines are natural nitrogen-containing compounds found in the cell DNA and RNA, including adenine (6-aminopurine) and guanine (2-amino, 6-oxypurine), are made inside the cells of the body
exogenously, purines can come from foods containing purine.
Under normal conditions, uric acid is eliminated by the kidney through urination. However, a high uric acid level can occur when the kidneys don't eliminate uric acid efficiently. People with kidney deficiency are associated with high levels of uric acid if foods with high levels of purines are consumed in large amounts, including red meat, seafood, and mushroom.
Some researchers suggested that people who are obese, overweight with diabetes, long-term use of diuretics, and excessive alcohol drinking are associated with the risk of high levels of uric acid in the blood.
Additionally, genetic mutation inherited from the parents such as Q141K polymorphism and CFTR ΔF508 certain medical conditions such as tumor lysis syndrome, hypothyroidism, and psoriasis is also some major risk factors to cause excessive levels of uric acid in the blood.
If you are currently taking long-term medications as maintenance therapy, to keep uric acid levels steady. Please make sure that you are aware of their side effects.
Green tea, a precious drink processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.
According to the joint study led by the University of Nagasaki, green tea and its bioactive compounds Epigallo catechin-O-gallate (EGCG) may be considered as a putative curative drug for various diseases of gout, through its properties in reducing the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2) in response to vascular endothelial growth factor signal (VGFG) for the formation of gout through an expression of levels of uric acid.
The study also emphasized that green tea with high levels of antioxidants and function in the stimulated production of natural antioxidants in the body may also be used to reduce symptoms of recurrently inflammatory arthritis and inflammatory arthritis such as gout, through inhibiting the oxidative stress in the induced production of inflammatory cytokines to facilitate symptoms of inflammation.
The above differentiation was supported by the study of the effect of EGCG on monosodium urate monohydrate (MSU)-induced inflammation and cryopyrin (NLRP3 inflammasome) activation in C57BL/6 mice received a subcutaneous injection or oral gavage of EGCG before the intraperitoneal injection of MSU.
Truly, the application of green tea EGCG decreased the expression of gouty arthritis caused by the injection of MSU-induced neutrophil infiltration with a function to initiate inflammation in the acute phase of infection and IL-1β secretion, in response and resistance to pathogens, but can also exacerbate damage during chronic disease and acute tissue injury.
The injection of green EGCG also decreased MSU-triggered neutrophil cytosolic factor 1, in the activated inflammatory response to optimize healing and reduce injury to the body but the proteins have been found to cause severe damage to the infectious site and NLRP3 protein expression in initiated systematic inflammatory expression.
Moreover, the effect of green tea in protection against gout occurrence also limited pro-inflammatory mediator secretion interleukin 1 beta (IL1β), a mediator of inflammation, in response to acute-phase infection, interleukin 6 (IL-6) produced by large amounts at sites of acute and chronic inflammation, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 in regulated monocytes, memory T cells, and dendritic cells to the sites of inflammation, and serum amyloid A, the serum was found to increase substantially in patients of chronic inflammatory disease, without limiting the function of the mediators in protect the infectious site against pathogens invasion.
More profoundly, the efficacy of green tea in reduced recurrent gout also extended to suppress NLRP3 inflammasome in stimulated caspase-1 in the promoted secretion of other proinflammatory cytokines activation.
Dr. Jhang JJ, the lead author said, "EGCG treatment ameliorates MSU-induced inflammation, suggesting that EGCG exerts anti-inflammatory effect against MSU-induced acute gout attack."
Additionally, the University of Pretoria suggested that polyphenols extracted from green tea also exhibited an antioxidant effect in reducing the pronounce of oxidative stress by their antioxidant properties.
Catechin (C) (Ki = 303.95, uncompetitive), epicatechin (EC) (Ki = 20.48, mixed), epigallocatechin (EGC) (Ki = 10.66, mixed), epicatechin gallate (ECg) (Ki = 2.86, mixed) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg) (Ki = 0.76, competitive) were found to have similar efficacy as allopurinol (Ki = 0.30, mixed), the drug used to inhibit the levels of xanthine oxidase (XO) in gout patients, through reducing reactive oxygen species in the initiation of oxidative stress that facilitates the inflammatory symptoms.
Taken together, green tea and its bioactive polyphenols may be considered a functional food for reduced onset and combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of gout with no adverse effects.

#Healthyfood #Cabbage Preserves the Mitochondrial Functioning By Inhibiting the Expression of #OxidativeStress, Researchers Say
By Kyle J. Norton
Mitochondria are the cell that converts food molecules into energy for the body tissues' needs. Mitochondria produce 90 percent of the energy for the body's function.
Mitochondrial dysfunction is a condition affecting the organelles that generate energy for the cell.
Genetically, the genetic proposition has been found to alter the process of mitochondria in converting oxygen and food to energy in some people.
Acquired mitochondrial dysfunction is caused by the long-term use of certain medications such as Metformin, medical conditions such as mitochondrial encephalomyopathy or infection, and environmental influences, such as xenochemicals, leading to less and less energy generated within the cells.
Acquired mitochondrial dysfunction has been found in patients with Alzheimer’s disease, muscular dystrophy, Lou Gehrig’s disease, diabetes, and cancer.
The most common symptoms of mitochondrial dysfunction include poor growth, muscle weakness, muscle pain, low muscle tone, exercise intolerance, vision and/or hearing problems
learning disabilities, delays in development, and mental retardation depending on the location of the infected cells.
Diseases associated with mitochondrial dysfunction include Autism, autism-like features Heart, liver, or kidney diseases, seizures, strokes, severe developmental delays, inability to walk, and dementia.
Conventionally, treatments for mitochondrial dysfunction are totally depending on the causes of the disease.
Dr. Sreenivas Avula, the lead scientist wrote, "Classification of therapies for mitochondrial disorders has evolved from the empirical therapies targeting residual respiratory chain to acting at the molecular level to alter the expression of mutated mtDNA genes within the cell nucleus".
And, " ...in the future, treatment strategies may employ a combination of pharmacological treatments that have undergone rigorous clinical trials targeting OXPHOS, as well as newer strategies at the molecular level".
Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem that is crowded with a mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.
With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention of oxidative stress in the progression of cardiac diseases, researchers examined the effect of cabbage extract on mitochondrial dysfunction in H9c2 cardiomyoblasts.
According to the tested differentiation, the administration of cabbage extract protected the mitochondria against H2O2-induced cell death without eliciting cytotoxic effects.
Furthermore, cabbage extract enhanced the expression of antioxidant proteins (SOD-1, catalase, and GPx) against ROS production.
Moreover, the extracts also stimulate the protein associated with cell survival by inhibiting apoptotic responses in oxidative stress-exposed H9c2 cells.
More precisely, cabbage extract preserved mitochondrial functions upon oxidative stress.
Based on the results, researchers wrote, "These findings reveal that cabbage extract protects against oxidative stress and suggest that it can be used as an alternative therapeutic strategy to prevent the oxidative stress in the heart".
Taken altogether, cabbage processed abundantly SFN may be considered a remedy for preventing and treating mitochondrial dysfunction in the initiation of heart disease, pending confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

The Effects of Onions on Antithrombotic and Thrombolytic Activities, According to Studies
By Kyle J. Norton
Antithrombotic activity is an action that reduces the formation of blood clots. Antithrombotics are medicines used therapeutically for the prevention or treatment of dangerous coagulation, particularly in acute thrombus.
Conventionally, medications that treat blood clots can be classified into anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs
* Anticoagulants; The main function of anticoagulation is slow down clotting by reducing fibrin formation. However, they are also used to prevent clots from forming and growing.
* Antiplatelet agents; the main function of antiplatelet agents is to prevent platelets from clumping together. However, they also exert a similar effect to those of anticoagulation.
Thrombolytic activity is an action that dissolves dangerous clots in blood vessels and improves blood flow, with an aim to prevent damage to tissues associated with heart diseases and stroke.
Thrombolysis, also known as thrombolytic therapy, is the type of conventional medicine that performs thrombolytic activity.
The most common agents of thrombolytic therapy are Eminase (anistreplase), Retavase (reteplase), and Streptase (streptokinase, kabikinase).
There are many factors associated with the risk of blood clots including bone fractures, major surgery, use of birth control pills, and pregnancy.
Epidemiologically, obesity, cigarette smoking, cancer, chemotherapy, and a personal history of abnormal blood clotting are also prevalent factors found in patients with thrombus.
The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belongings to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.
Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.
On finding a potential compound that promotes blood thinning, researchers examined the effects of onion extract's antithrombotic effect.
According to the results of the experiment* Toyohira, one of the onion varieties showed significant antithrombotic activity both in vitro and in vivo.
* Moreover, Toyohira not only exhibited thrombolytic activity but also promoted the antiplatelet effect.
* Superkitamomiji, 2935A, and K83211, other varieties of onion showed only thrombolytic activity.
* More interestingly, quercetin, the richest flavonoid in onion, showed no correlation in the antithrombotic activity.
Based on the results, researchers strongly suggested that onion A. cepa can be classified into varieties with or without antithrombotic and thrombolytic effects.
In other words, only certain varieties of onion process antithrombotic and thrombolytic activity.
Taken altogether, certain onion varieties may be as antithrombotic and thrombolytic agents, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
