#Coltsfoots Process Bone Marrow Cells and Reno Protective Activities in Vivos, Studies Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Leukemia is characterized by an abnormal increase of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow and/or the lymphatic system. Depending on the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.

Bone marrow is the soft tissue inside the hollow center of the major bone. including the spine, pelvis, underarm, and leg. etc.

Acute leukemia is a condition caused by a rapid increase in the number of extremely immature white blood cells which appear in the bloodstream in the other parts of the body, including tissue and organs, Acute leukemia can also be classified into
* Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)
Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a type of cancer of the abnormal growth of extremely immature lymphocytes overproduced by the bone marrow and/or lymphatic system. The condition has a tendency to multiply quickly, leading to the death of normal white blood cells in the bone marrow and/or lymphatic system.

In ALL, lymphocytes appear immature in the bloodstream. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common childhood form of leukemia with about 80% of all cases.

* Acute myeloid leukemia (AML)
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) is a cancer of the myelogenous lining caused by the rapid growth of abnormal granulocytes accumulated in the bone marrow, interfering with the normal blood cells. In AML, granulocytes appear immature in the bloodstream.

According to the statistic proved by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately 21,450 new cases of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) will be diagnosed in adults. The disease also causes the
of 10,920 deaths of American adults.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used for thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of bone marrow cell integrity, researchers examined the protective effect of polysaccharides from Tussilago farfara L. on bone marrow cells.

According to the tested analysis, Tussilago farfara L. protected the bone marrow cells against the side effects of polychemotherapy-induced apoptosis.

Furthermore, polychemotherapy-induced DNA damage in bone marrow cells was also reversed by applying polysaccharides from Tussilago farfara L.

In vivo, in the small intestinal epithelium of C57Bl/6 mice, polysaccharides from Tussilago farfara L. also induced renoprotective properties against the chemo side effects.

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for protecting bone marrow cells integrity against the onset of leukemia, pending confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #CranberryJuices Improve Short-Term Memory of Dementia and Neurocognitive Impairments, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Neuropsychological assessment provides both general and specific information about current levels of cognitive performance. An average or composite score across multiple ability areas provides an overall index of how well a person functions cognitively at the current time.

Cognition is the process of the brain functioning associated with the attention of working memory, producing and comprehending language, learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and decision making.

Cognitive deficit is a medical condition, that affects a person's thinking, communication, understanding or memory. The cognitive deficit can be acute or chronic.

Acute cognitive deficit is a short-term health problem caused by drug toxicity and withdrawal, electrolyte disturbance, lack of drugs, liver disease, infection, reduced sensor input, intracranial urinary retention/fecal impaction or myocardial/metabolic/pulmonary. An acute cognitive deficit may be recovered if the cause is found.

Chronic cognitive deficit is a permanent medical condition caused by the gradual or permanent loss of the neurons, leading to problems of language, ideomotor and constructive praxis, visual gnosis, spatial attention, learning abilities, and executive functions.

There is no single cause of the chronic cognitive deficit. An increase in age, genetic preposition, certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, high blood cholesterol, and pressure, being obese and lack of exercise are some prevalent factors found in patients with chronic cognitive deficits.

Some researchers suggested that depending on the locations of the brain that were affected, patients may be at risk of Alzheimer's disease such as brain change caused by the abnormal clumps of beta-amyloid protein (plaques).

Small strokes or reduced blood flow through the brain can also cause a chronic cognitive deficit.

According to the observation of the patient's MRI, the patient's brain with cognitive impairment also showed shrinkage of the hippocampus, a brain region important for memory, enlargement of the brain's fluid-filled spaces (ventricles), and reduced use of glucose, the sugar that's the primary source of energy for cells.

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of the condition, obesity is also one of the major risk factors of cognitive impairment in the Western world.

Dr. Jason C. D. Nguyen, the lead author on the neurological team wrote in the final report, "The incidence of obesity in middle age is increasing markedly, and in parallel, the prevalence of metabolic disorders including cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes is also rising. Numerous studies have demonstrated that both obesity and metabolic disorders are associated with poorer cognitive performance, cognitive decline, and dementia".

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of the neurological disorder, researchers examined the cranberry extract (CE) neuropsychologic effect.

The double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, parallel-group, clinical trial included 50 community-dwelling, cognitively intact volunteers, > or = 60 years old, who reported no history of dementia or significant neurocognitive impairments.

Participants in the study were randomly assigned to receive either 32 ounces/day of a beverage containing 27% cranberry juice per volume (n = 25) or a placebo (n = 25) for 6 weeks.

According to the neuropsychologic tests before and after treatment on participants' self-reported, there was a nonsignificant trend (X2(1) = 2.373, p = 0.123) on overall abilities to remember.

However, more than twice of many participants (37.5%) reported the overall ability to remember at the end of treatment compared to placebo controls (17.4%).

In other words, cranberry extract (CE) although can not improve overall neuropsychologic symptoms, enhances the short-term memory of dementia or significant neurocognitive impairments.

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the improvement of memory, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Bromelain Enzymes Decrease #Inflammation Severity that Causes #InflammatoryBowelDiseases, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Colitis is a medical condition associated with the inflammation of the inner lining of the colon.
The causes of colitis can be results of infection, inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, ischemic colitis, allergic reactions, and microscopic colitis.

Most common systems of colitis are total depending on the types of condition, including abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, with or without blood in the stool.

Some patients with colitis also experience symptoms of fever, chills, fatigue, dehydration, and eye inflammation.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

According to the statistics, in the US, 1.6 million Americans are living with inflammatory bowel disease, about 907,000 of them have ulcerative colitis.

Also, according to a study by the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, the most common types of colitis include
* Microscopic colitis is an inflammation of the large intestine (colon) that causes persistent watery diarrhea.

* Ischemic colitis is inflammation and injury of the large intestine that results from the inadequate blood supply.

* Segmental colitis is an inflammation of the colonic luminal mucosa.

* Radiation enteritis is inflammation of the intestines caused by radiotherapy.

* Diversion colitis is an inflammation of the colon associated with the complication of ileostomy or colostomy.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and for the treatment of pains, strains, muscle aches, and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural compound for the treatment of colitis, researchers examined whether long-term dietary supplementation with pineapple (supplied as juice) could decrease colon inflammation in neoplasia in Il10(-/-) mice with chronic colitis, compared to bromelain derived from the stem.

The experiment included colitis Il10(-/-) mice induced by exposure to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug piroxicam followed by supplemented with fresh vs. boiled pineapple juice or bromelain purified (14 mg bromelain) from the stem for up to 6 months.

During the study, daily treatment of fresh juice had decreased histologic colon inflammation scores and a lower incidence of inflammation scores, compared to those treated with bromelain purified (14 mg bromelain).

Furthermore, both treatments showed fewer neoplastic lesions/colon. However, fresh juice lower incidence of inflammation-associated colonic neoplasia by 35% compared to 66% of those treated with bromelain purified (14 mg bromelain).

According to the flow cytometric analysis of murine splenocytes in vitro, fresh pineapple juice demonstrated a proteolytic removal of cell surface molecules that can affect leukocyte trafficking and activation, compared to those treated with bromelain purified.

The finding strongly supported the long-term use of pineapple juice with proteolytically active bromelain enzymes for the treatment of inflammatory induction of colitis.

Dr. Hale LP, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "long-term dietary supplementation with fresh or unpasteurized frozen pineapple juice with proteolytically active bromelain enzymes is safe and decreases inflammation severity and the incidence and multiplicity of inflammation-associated colonic neoplasia in this commonly used murine model of inflammatory bowel diseases".

Taken altogether, pineapple (supplied as juice) processed with a high amount of bioactive compound bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of colitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthyfood #Fennel Inhibits the Daily Stress in the Workplaces, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Fennel may have a potential and positive effect on reduced stress implication, some scientists suggested.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean, used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

Society and environment impact on stress conditions, over a prolonged period of time, may induce a change of behavior, leading to disturbances in the normal physiological functioning due to increased free radicals generation in the initiated onset of hypertension, neurosis, immune suppression, and other physical and mental disorders.

In the study to evaluate the anti-stress and memory-enhancing properties of F. Vulgare extract in experimentally stress rats at doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg body weight administered orally with an orogastric tube researchers found that rats treated with all doses exert a significant effect in reduced stress implication linearly, observed by Urinary levels of vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) assay in 24 hours.

Further analysis of the rat group treated fennel with an additional injection of ascorbic acid also found that the secretion of urinary ascorbic acid levels increased from 65.74 to 78.59, 108.41, and 125.82 μg/kg also within the same period on doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight respectively in compared to the untreated control group.

These results indicated that fennel has a stronger impact on reduced chronic stress connotation in compared to both ascorbic acid and control groups.

Moreover, the group treatment group also displayed a reduced expression of lipid peroxidation in both rat liver and brain homogenates catalyzed by the stress in induction of ROS production and reduced natural antioxidant defense in comparison to the rat group treated with ascorbic acid.

Dr. S Koppula,, the lead author, after taking into account other confounders said, "The (Fennel) extract also exhibited potent antioxidant effect by inhibition of lipid peroxidation in both rat liver and brain homogenates to a greater extent than the standard antioxidant, ascorbic acid".

Additionally, in the review literature of a number of such drugs mostly in the form of their extracts (holistic approach) or in some, as active principles isolated from them, have been evaluated for their antistress activity by a number of tests which include open-field behavior, researchers found that
* Fennel may have a strong effect in reduced stress in tested mice through observation of swimming endurance and hexobarbitone sleeping time in association to stress in induction of anxiety.

* Fennel inhibited the production of the level of stress hormone corticosterone produced in the cortex of the adrenal gland.

* Fennel increased the production of antioxidants and enhanced the antioxidant defense of hosts such as Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) and sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH), in inhibited overexpression of ROS in initiated chain reactions caused by chronic stress.

* Fennel inhibited levels of MAO in association with the alternation of mood and mental conditions.

Finally, the application of fennel also reduced the tension of the central nervous system in response to stress impact, thus reducing neurotransmitter levels in stimulated production of stress hormones in facilitated ROS production, depression, and anxiety,.......

The above illustration was supported by the application of fennel oil in exerted significant anti-psychiatric disorders caused by chronic stress such as depression and anxiety in tested mice respectively treated with water, fluoxetine (0.3 mg/kg), and fennel oil (0.5 ml/day) conducted by the Aga Khan University

According to the study, repeated administration of fennel oil for 3 weeks exerted significant antidepressant- and anxiolytic-like effects, observed by struggling time in forced swim test (FST) and time spent in open arm in the elevated plus maze (EPM) incomparable to fluoxetine treatment group.

Interestingly, the rats' treated group also exhibited high levels of antioxidants in inhibited ROS in facilitated production of free radicals through lipid peroxidation.

Taken together, fennel with abundant phytochemicals may be considered a functional food with reduced stress implications in the initiation of related diseases.

#Healthyfood #Eggplant's Phenolic Compound Inhibits the Oxidativestress that Causes #ChronicDiseases, Scientists Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a whole fruit or vegetable with a potential to treat cardiovascular disease with no side effects, some studies found.

Cardiovascular disease is a class of conditions associated with heart and blood vessels. Anything that affects the normal heart and blood vessel functionings is considered risk factor for the disease, including heart muscle, valves or rhythm, and blockage of blood vessels.

According to the statistics, in the US, approximately, 610,000 people die of heart disease every year that's 1 in every 4 deaths. The disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women.

The causes of cardiovascular diseases are associated with the location that affects the functioning of the heart and blood vessels, including atherosclerosis is caused by the blockade of the blood vessel due to the accumulation of plaques in the arteries and arrhythmias caused by abnormal heart rhythms.

Epidemiological studies strongly suggested that the most common cardiovascular disease that affects most heart disease patients is coronary artery disease (CAD).

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common form of heart disease caused by one or more of the coronary arteries become narrow or blocked.

Some researchers suggested that the widespread diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) in the Western world probably is a result of the promotion of the Western diet over the last few decades.

The diet high in bad cholesterol, salts and sugar and carcinogens associated with the accumulation of plaques on the arteries have been found to be a culprit of the onset of coronary artery disease in many studies.

Dr. Oikonomou E, the lead author in the joint study led by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens on the concerns of CAD widespread in the Western world launched an investigation to examine the independent predictive value of an unhealthy diet on the severity of coronary artery disease (CAD).

In the total of 188 symptomatic stable patients with CAD. Patients were categorized as having severe CAD or nonsevere CAD by coronary angiography.

Among several demographics and clinical characteristics, all patients were tested using a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire.

By analyzing the 8 principal components in the 8 distinct dietary patterns found in the returned questionnaire, researchers found that The Western dietary pattern (increased intake of fat, red meat, and carbohydrates and minimal consumption of fruits and green leafy vegetables) was predictive of severe CAD (area under the curve: 0.73, 95% confidence intervals: 0.64-0.83, P < .001).

These results not only suggested that the Western not only causes the onset of the disease but also increased the risk of severity of coronary artery lesions in patients with stable CAD.

The doctors in the study wrote the final report, "The findings highlight the role of dietary patterns when estimating cardiovascular risk for the management of patients with CAD".

Eggplant is a species of S. melongena, belonging to the family Solanaceae and native to India.

The plant has been cultivated in southern and eastern Asia since prehistory. It is famous for its deep purple and the best eggplant can be found from August through October when it is in season.

The chemical constituents of eggplant include sterols (i.e. typical plant sterols, androstane, pregnane and cholestane derivatives, steroidal alkaloids, and sapogenins), phytosterols, triterpenes, δ-amyrin, Chlorogenic acid, Nasunin, and other Polyphenolic compounds.

In the finding, a natural compound with the efficacy for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease with no side effects, researchers at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine examines the role of raw and grilled eggplants on cardioprotection using an isolated perfusion heart model.

The animals were fed freeze-dried products of either raw or grilled eggplants for 30 days. After 30 days, isolated working hearts were subjected to 30 min ischemia followed by 2 h of reperfusion.

The medical assays suggested eggplants process potent cardioprotective compounds judging by their ability to increase left ventricular function, and reduce myocardial infarct size and cardiomyocyte apoptosis.

Interestingly, researchers found no difference in cardioprotective ability between the raw and grilled products.

Based on the antioxidant vitamins classification, researchers showed that vitamin A, vitamin C, and β-carotene, were lower and some of the polyphenolic components, especially nasunin content, were higher in grilled eggplants, These results indicated that there must be some other ingredient processed by both grill and raw eggplants that exert cardiovascular diseases not found in this study.

Moreover, in the study to analyze total phenolics and antioxidant capacity in the indigenous vegetables for cardioprotective effect researchers at the Tuskegee University conducted a group analysis including collard greens, mustard greens, kale, okra, green onion, butter beans, butter peas, purple hull peas, rutabagas, and eggplant.

At a concentration of 10.0 mg dried vegetable equivalent/ml, the extract of these vegetables exerted a significant antioxidant activity by reducing 13.2-88.5% DPPH(•) radical in 30 min.

The Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. (ORAC) value ranged from 2.5 to 100.7 µmoles of Trolox equivalents per gram of dried sample.

The antioxidant capacity of the vegetable samples was highly related to their total phenolic content.

The evidence suggested these indigenous vegetables are good sources of phenolic compounds, which might provide anti-oxidative protection against free radicals in inducing chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease.

Taken altogether, eggplant processed abundantly bioactive antioxidants may be considered a functional vegetable for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of cardiovascular disease without inducing any adverse effects

#Herbal #Chamomile in the Prevention and Treatment of #Insomnia, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found herbal medicine to treat insomnia with no side effects, according to the result of some studies.
Insomnia is a sign and symptom of a sleep disorder in which a person has difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep or sleep of poor quality.

According to the statistic provided by Sleep Education, insomnia affects millions of people in the US, 30 to 35% have brief symptoms of insomnia, 15 to 20% have a short-term insomnia disorder, which lasts less than three months and 10% have a chronic insomnia disorder, which occurs at least three times per week for at least three months.

And, one in three people suffers from some form of insomnia during their lifetime and women suffer from insomnia more often than men.

There is no single cause of insomnia. Researchers suggested that psychiatric and medical conditions, such as stress and anxiety, and chronic illness such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal disorders, kidney disease, unhealthy sleep habits, and long-term use of substances, are associated with some prevalent risk factors of the onset of insomnia.

In other words, anything that causes the disruption of the brain's sleep-wake cycle or the brain function to turn on and off the sleep-wake cycle is the risk factor for the syndrome onset.

Long-term use of certain medications can also induce insomnia. The National Jewish Health suggested
antidepressants such as Prozac® and Zoloft, Dopamine agonists, and anticonvulsants are some medications that can cause insomnia.

If you are taking one of these medicines and have a sleep problem, please make sure you discuss the problem with your doctors.

Long-term and untreated insomnia may increase the risk of the complication of anxiety, depression and heart failure and daytime trouble concentrating, and mood disturbances

Chamomile is also known as camomile, the common name of many species of daisy-like plants in the family Asteraceae.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituent and to treat menstrual cramps and sleep disorders, reduce cramping and spastic pain in the bowels, relieve excessive gas and bloating in the intestine, etc.

Chamomile is one of the most popular herbs used for sleep disorders in herbal medicine. According to Dr. Srivastava JK and the research team at the Case Western Reserve University, many different preparations of the herb have been developed, the most popular of which is in the form of herbal tea consumed more than one million cups per day.

In reaffirming the effect of chamomile used in traditional medicine for the treatment of insomnia, researchers at the University of Michigan launched an investigation to examine the preliminary efficacy and safety of chamomile for improving subjective sleep and daytime symptoms in patients with chronic insomnia.

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot trial included 34 patients aged 18-65 years with DSM-IV primary insomnia for ≥ 6 months.

Patients were randomized to 270 mg of chamomile twice daily or placebo for 28 days.

There were no significant differences between groups in changes in sleep diary measures, including total sleep time (TST), sleep efficiency, sleep latency, wake after sleep onset (WASO), sleep quality, and the number of awakenings.

Participants who received the 270 mg chamomile show a modest advantage in daytime functioning compared to the placebo.

Intake of chamomile also exerted a moderate effect on sleep latency, nighttime awakenings, and Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS).

There were no differences in adverse events reported by the chamomile group compared to the placebo.

Dr. Zick SM after taking the final assessment said, "Chamomile could provide modest benefits of daytime functioning and mixed benefits on sleep diary measures relative to placebo in adults with chronic primary insomnia".

DR. Wheatley D, in the classification of the medicinal plants for insomnia, once again suggested that chamomile improves the sleep quality of patients with insomnia may be attributed to the herbal medicine's anxiolytic or sedative properties.

Taken altogether, chamomile may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of insomnia.

#Healthyfood #CucumberSeeds Exhibit Anti-Hyperlipidemic Activities, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition associated with abnormally high levels of lipids, including cholesterol and fat in the bloodstream.
People with hyperlipidemia are symptomatic. However, depending on the amount of lipids accumulated on the arterial wall, some people in the advanced stage may be at substantial risk of heart disease and stroke.

Hyperlipidemia is a condition of the cluster of metabolic syndrome. If untreated, it can lead to atherosclerosis, a condition of hardening and narrowing of the arteries that facilitates the onset of coronary artery disease.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, in 2015–2016, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older had total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL, and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL.

Conventionally, hyperlipidemia is treatable. Most patients with the condition are treated by prescribed high-cholesterol medicine statins, such as simvastatin, lovastatin, atorvastatin, and rosuvastatin.

However, for people with a high risk of cardiovascular diseases, PCSK9 inhibitors, such as Redpath (evolocumab) may be prescribed.

If you are taking medicine to lower your blood cholesterol, please make sure that you know all the side effects of preventive measures.

Although there are many factors that cause the onset of hyperlipidemia, some researchers suggested the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades may have strong implications in inducing the rise of hyperlipidemia in the US.

Dr. Cole TG,, the lead scientist wrote, " In normals, dietary cholesterol increases LDL production and decreases LDL receptor-related LDL clearance, resulting in elevations in LDL cholesterol levels of approximately 30 mg/dL".

And, " the effects of high fat and high cholesterol diets on the lipoproteins of individuals with diminished LDL receptors, three kinds of diets, including ones high in cholesterol, were fed to four patients with familial hypercholesterolemia, in the expectation that diet effects on apoB- or apoE-containing lipoproteins would be exaggerated".

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belonging to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

In a concern of hyperlipidemia associated with increased risk of atherosclerosis, researchers examined the Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) seed effect on how to control this risk factor for the prevention of atherosclerosis.

The randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial included hyperlipidemic patients randomly assigned to either Cucumis (n=23) used one medicinal capsule or placebo groups (n=24)used one placebo capsule once daily with food for 6 wks.

According to the tested assays, at the end of the experiment, Cucumis seed extract showed a significant reduction of total cholesterol, triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C), and body mass index (BMI) and a significant increase of high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C), compared to the placebo group.

More precisely, the consumption of C. sativus seed extract with a daily dose of 500 mg exerted a maximum effect on the serum lipid profile in adult hyperlipidemic patients.

In other words, cucumber (Cucumis sativus) seed not only reduces the expression of hyperlipidemia but also inhibited the risk of atherosclerosis.

Furthermore, in vivo, researchers in the CVD team at the Sharadchandra Pawar College of Pharmacy evaluated the anti-hyperlipidemic activity of Cucumis melo fruit peel (CMFP) methanolic and aqueous extract in high cholesterol diet-induced hyperlipidemic rats.

Injection of CMFP methanolic and aqueous extract resulted in a significant (P<0.01) reduction in gaining body weight, serum lipid profile like total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) level.

Compared to the hyperlipidemic control group, the treatment group showed a strong effect on the atherogenic index and an increase of the serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels in 28 days.

Treatment groups also exerted anti-hyperlipidemic activity observed by the increased fecal excretion of bile acids and sterols similar to that of standard drugs.

Once again, the administration of a methanolic extract of CMFP at a dose of 500 mg/kg showed higher antihyperlipidemic activity, compared to other extract doses.

Taken altogether, cucumber may be used for the treatment of hyperlipidemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
