#Healthyfood #Cucumber's #Cucurbitacin B (CuB) Reduces the Risk of #PancreaticCancer, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Primary pancreatic cancer is a medical condition originated from the pancreas as a result of the alternation of cells' DNA in the pancreas tissue.
Most cases of pancreatic cancer at the early stage begin in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the pancreas before growing in the size that affects the function of the organ.

At the very early stage of the pancreas, most patients are asymptomatic. However, at the advanced stage, patients may experience the symptoms shared by all cancers such as unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, persistent fatigue, and gastrointestinal discomforts accompanied by jaundice, belly and back pain, enlarged liver and gallbladder, and blood clots.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US this year, approximately 56,770 people (29,940 men and 26,830 women) will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The disease also will cause the death of 45,750 people (23,800 men and 21,950 women) in the US.

The 5 years survival rate of localized pancreatic cancer is only 34%. The rate is relatively low compared to other types of cancer in the localized stage such as 100% in breast cancer.

The causes of pancreatic cancer are unknown. Epidemiological studies suggested that aging, gender, ethnicity, family history, smoking, and people with certain medical con conditions such as diabetes, are the most prevalent risk found in patients with pancreatic cancer.

Dr. Michaud DS in the examination of the rate of pancreatic cancer risk arisen in patients with obesity compared to overweight and healthy subjects over past few decades wrote, "Obesity has surfaced as an important risk factor for pancreatic cancer as epidemiological studies with strong methodological designs have removed important biases and solidified the obesity associations".

And, "Moreover, studies indicate that obesity early in adulthood is strongly associated with future risk of pancreatic cancer and that abdominal obesity is an independent risk factor".

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae, and is native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

In the urgency to find a potential compound for the treatment of pancreatic cancer, researchers examined Cucurbitacin B (CuB), a natural tetracyclic triterpene product found abundantly in cucumber antitumor activity.

According to the tested assays, CuB arrested pancreatic cancer (PC) cells in the G2/M cell cycle phase by suppressing the expression of AFAP1-AS1, an RNA gene associated with poor prognosis in cancer patients.

Elevated AFAP1-AS1 expression is found in patients' TSCC tumor tissues and tested cell lines.

Additional differentiation of the CuB effects, researchers found that Cub suppression the tumor proliferation by enhancing high miR-146b-5p expression in pancreatic cancer (PC) cells, an indication of cancer cell suppression.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "CuB suppresses the proliferation, in vitro and in vivo, of PC cells through the... effect of AFAP1-AS1 on miR-146b-5p".

Additionally, according to the results from the Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University,* CuB inhibited of the expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in the promotion of solid tumor growth.

* CuB blocked the activation of signaling pathways (PI3K/Akt/mTOR and STAT3.) associated with the cell proliferative stimulation.
* CuB also exhibited cytotoxicity by enhancing t

The protein (ERK-activating AMPK signaling) associated with cellular metabolism and tumor suppression

Taken altogether, cucumber processed abundantly bioactive compound CuB may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of pancreatic cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of CuB in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Bilberry Inhibits #Oxidativestress that Causes Liver Damage, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Bilberry may be used for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases with no side effects, according to studies.
Liver diseases are a medical condition in which the liver functions are reduced. In severe cases, liver diseases can induce liver failure.

The function of the liver is to filter out the blood from the digestive system before passing them to the cells and other parts of the body.
The largest organ also has a unique function in detoxifying the toxin in medications and drugs.

Furthermore, in the detoxification perspective, the liver also deactivates toxins by breaking down the toxins debris into a form that can be removed by the body.

Moreover, the organ performs the function of recycling old blood cells.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC and the American Liver Foundation, cirrhosis is a common liver disease that causes the death of over 31,000 people in the U.S. each year

The increase in age, gender, exposure to hepatitis viral occupation, being overweight or obese, high
blood cholesterol, hypertriglyceridemia, diabetes, and long-term use of certain medications such as
corticosteroids, prednisone, and hydrocortisone are some prevalent risk factors for liver diseases.

In the US, the hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is the leading cause of cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Dr. Vikas Khullar, the lead scientist in the examination of hepatitis C in risk of liver diseases wrote, "Despite recent advances in drugs for the treatment of hepatitis C, predictive models estimate the incidence of cirrhosis due to hepatitis C infection will continue to rise for the next two decades".

And, "There is currently an immense interest in the treatment of patients with fibrosis and early-stage cirrhosis as treatment can lead to a decrease in the rates of decompensated cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and need for liver transplantation in these patients".

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrub in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The herbal plant has been used as foods and herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Researchers with an aim to find a natural compound that processes liver protective effects investigated the bilberry extract against the 18 h restraint stress-induced serious liver damage in the animal models.

Restraint mice before injection of bilberry extract showed increased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and lower oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) values in plasma and liver.

Oral administration of bilberry extract, containing 42.04% anthocyanins) in mice at 50, 100, and 200 mg/(kg x day) for five days, remarkably decreased plasma ALT level to 17.23 +/- 2.49 U/L at the dose of 200 mg/(kg x day) and alleviated stress-induced liver damage.

Furthermore, the injection of the extract also bilberry increased antioxidant enzymes produced by the host such as glutathione (GSH) and vitamin C, and significantly decreased the oxidative stress marker MDA and levels of free radicals such as nitric oxide (NO) in the liver tissues.

The findings strongly suggested that bilberry extract protects the liver against restraint stress by both scavenging free radicals activity and lipid peroxidation inhibitory effect.

Moreover, in rats induced liver damage by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) was divided into four groups: Group I (0.9% NaCl-10days), Group II (bilberry extract, 75mg/kg-10days), Group III (0,9% NaCl-9days, and on the tenth day CCl4-2ml/kg), Group IV (bilberry extract, 75mg/kg-10days and on the tenth day CCl4-2ml/kg)., researchers found that

* Injection of bilberry extract significantly decreases the activity of biochemical parameters associated with liver damage, such as AST, GGT, LDH, and ALT, levels of the pro-oxidative enzyme such as xanthine oxidase, and the level of lipid peroxidation in the liver in Group IV.

* Application of bilberry extract also resulted in an increase in the number of apoptotic liver damage cells by the activity of the apoptotic protein in the liver tissue.

Dr. Popović D, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders wrote at the end of the experiment, "Anthocyanins from bilberry extract have strong antioxidant properties and therefore can be considered as powerful hepatoprotectives in natural products".

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a liver-protective functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver damage and diseases pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #Onion Processes Antibiotic-Like Activities, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Infection is a medical condition that can be acute or chronic. Acute infection is sudden inflammation that occurs in a short period of time accompanied by a relatively brief period of symptoms.
Most cases of acute infection can be solved within days as the infectious agents are destroyed by the host immune system.

Chronic infection is a condition that lasts for a long period of time with the difficulty of clearing. Most cases of chronic infection are latent or slow infections that last the life of the host.

Antibiotics are medicines that inhibit the growth of or destroy microorganisms, including the popular penicillin or its derivatives

A bacterial infection is an infection caused by bacteria. Most cases of bacterial infection are treated with antibiotics. However, bacteria are very adaptable, and overuse of antibiotics has made many of them resistant to antibiotics.

There are trillions of strains of bacteria in the world, but only a few of these cause diseases in humans. Some of them live inside our gut.

There are many risk factors associated with the onset of bacterial infections
However, researchers do not know why people with the same health condition in the same family, are prone to infectious diseases, while others do not.

The most common symptoms of bacterial infection include redness and heat, swelling, fever, and pain at the site of infection.

In severe cases, the patient may also experience symptoms of swollen lymph glands.

Most cases of bacterial infection can be treated successfully if the types of bacteria that cause the infection are identified.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation to garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of infectious disease researchers examined the antibacterial and possible antibiotic potentiating activity of garlic and onion.

The study compared the efficacy of decoction as traditionally used and methanol, ethanol, ethyl acetate, and acetone extracts of onion and garlic on 15 bacterial strains (6 ATCC strains and 9 clinical isolates).

According to the tested differentiation,
* Ethyl acetate extract of onion combined with Streptomycin produced an indifferent effect on all tested bacterial strains.

* Ethyl acetate extract of onion combined with Chloramphenicol showed a synergistic effect against ATCC S. aureus (FIC 0.27-0.30) and Micrococci species (FIC 0.27-0.32).

The antibacterial activity of onion extracts may be attributed to the presence of a high concentration of phenolic compounds in the onion.

In other words, the antibacterial property of onion is totally dependent on the antioxidant content which may be altered due to the different methods of growth, including conventional and organic cultivation.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "This study has provided an opportunity to establish valuable baseline information on the antibiotic potentiating activity of onion and... which can be further exploited for the treatment and/or management of infectious diseases".

Taken altogether, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of infectious disease, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #GreenBeans Protect the Liver by Inhibiting the Liver Stress Markers, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Oxidative stress is a condition characterized by overexpression of free radicals in the body.
In other words, oxidative stress is a result of the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants caused by abundant free radicals and low levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the body.

A free radical is an unstable atom with a single electron on the outermost ring. Given to its nature, free radicals readily donate or intercept an electron from another atom, leading to a chain of the free radical cascade that cannot be stopped until all single electron is paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Antioxidants are stable atoms with a function to inhibit oxidation, come either from dietary sources or produced by the body.

Contrast to general belief, free radical is also needed in a moderated amount for the function of the heart muscle to pump blood such as NO for vasodilation and increasing blood flow.

In a healthy person, oxidative stress is harmful because it not only induces cells' lipid and protein oxidation but also causes the change of cell DNA, leading to diseases associated with oxidative stress including cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

Ozone, certain pesticides, and cleaners, cigarette smoke, radiation, and pollution are some of the risk factors associated with the increased risk of oxidative stress.

Liver stress markers such as serum MDA refer to oxidative stress in the liver tissues caused by the overexpression of free radicals or reduced levels of antioxidant enzymes in the liver.

Dr. Halina Cichoż-Lach, the lead scientist said, "Redox state constitutes an important background of numerous liver disorders. The redox state participates in the course of inflammatory, metabolic and proliferative liver diseases.".

And, "Hepatocytic proteins, lipids, and DNA are among the cellular structures that are primarily affected by ROS and reactive nitrogen species. The process results in structural and functional abnormalities in the liver".

In other words, liver oxidative stress over the long-term induced damage of proteins, and lipid and alternation of cell DNA can lead to liver diseases, including cancer.

Green bean is a genus of Phaseolus Sensu Stricto, containing 55 different species, belong to the family Fabaceae and native to the New World tropics and grown in Europe for its attractive flowers and fleshy immature pods. It can be classified into two major groups, bush beans, and pole beans.

In finding a natural compound for the prevention of liver stress, researchers examined the effect of cabbage, green beans, or seeds from sunflowers grown either on municipal sewage sludge-amended soil or soil alone fed to male and female Coturnix quail, as 50% of a complete diet, for 5 weeks.

Green beans fed male and female Coturnix quail exhibited liver GST activities significantly lower compared to those fed with sludge-grown cabbage.

Compared to the levels of liver glutathione S-transferase (GST) soil-grown cabbage demonstrated a two-fold activity increase in birds fed the other plants.

More precisely, the levels of glucosinolates present in the cabbage, are 3040 and 9253 ppm (dry basis) in the sludge-grown and soil-grown cabbage, respectively.

In other words, green beans showed a significant reduction of liver stress markers lesser than those of cabbage, regardless of soil cultivation.

Taken altogether, green beans may be considered a liver protective veggie, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#GarlicExtracts Inhibit the Risk of #ColorectalCancer through Cell Cycle Arrest, Researchers Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belonging to the family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia. It has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine in treating the common cold and flu to the Plague, blood pressure cholesterol levels, natural antibiotics, etc.

Bowel cancer also known as colorectal cancer, is defined as a condition of the abnormal proliferation of cells in the colon, rectum, or vermiform appendix. Bowel cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing cancer in a predictable way.
Bowel cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in developed countries, including the US and Canada.

Allicin (diallyl thiosulfinate) is the best-known biologically active component in freshly crushed garlic, found to reduce the risk of colon cancer through inhibited cancer cell lines HCT-116, LS174T, HT-29, and Caco-2, according to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

In the study of garlic phytochemical compounds such as S-allyl mercapto cysteine, diallyl disulfide, and S-trityl-L-cysteine, research also found that the chemical ingredients isolated from garlic inhibited colon cancer cells (SW620 and HCT116) growth followed by induction of apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner.

In Vitro, intake of garlic and its lipid-based extracts, induced cell cycle arrest, through a fourfold increase in caspase activity (apoptosis) in PC-3 cells when treated at a dose of 0.5 or 1 μg/m and may consider potential as a promising anticancer agent, including colon cancer.

Dr. Baena R and Dr, Salinas P said, " Dietary factors and lifestyle may contribute to the increasing colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence... Fish consumption may decrease CRC risk by 12% whereas garlic intake is not significantly associated with reduced CRC risk".

In fact, diet represents 30-35% of risk factors that contribute to the onset of cancer, adding garlic to your diet is associated to reduce the risk of various cancers, including Colorectal Cancer, together with the reduction of meat intake influenced by both total intake and its frequency.

#Herbal #Ashwagandha inhibits the Risk of #PancreaticCancer, Researchers Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells grow and multiply in disordered and uncontrollable ways in our body, due to the change of cellular DNA. Most cases of cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissue of the organ.
However, at the later stage of the tumor progression, if undetected, the large size of the tumor can suppress and break the nearby small blood vessel, leading to internal bleeding and severe if the tumor also suppresses the nearby nerve cells.

Primary cancer cells at this advanced stage can also travel a distance away from the original site to affect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

Pancreatic cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the pancreas.

In the early stage, pancreatic cancer starts in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of pancreatic tissue. At the advanced stage, cancerous cells of the pancreas can travel a distance away to invade other healthy tissue and organs.

The exact causes of the alternation of DNA of pancreatic cells are unknown. However, epidemiological studies suggested that genetic preposition and acquired gene mutations are associated with the increased incidence of cancer.

Some researchers suggested long-term use of tobacco, being overweight and obese, exposure to workplace chemicals, age, gender, and family history are some prevalent risk factors for pancreatic cancer.

According to the statistics, pancreatic cancer is the eighth most common cancer in women and the fourth leading cause of cancer death in men. Pancreatic cancer accounts for 7% of all cancer deaths.

The 5 years survival rate at stages 1 and 2 is 61% and 52% respectively.
Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America.

Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean. The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the withaferin-A (WA), the biologically active withanolide extracted from Withania somnifera in human pancreatic cancer cells.

According to the tested analysis, the extract significantly increased the cell's spherical structure with double-layer membranes degraded by autophagy through cleaning out damaged cells in normal cells.

However, in human pancreatic cancer (PC) cells, withanolide extract also blocked the degradation of autophagy by inhibiting SNARE protein in the the-mediated fusion of autophagosomes and lysosomes which contains degradative enzymes enclosed in a membrane.

In other words, in human pancreatic cancer (PC) cells, the extract promotes cancer cell degradation by autophagy to induce apoptosis.

More precisely, WA induced ER stress-mediated apoptosis. by promoting the accumulation of ubiquitinated proteins, associated with degradation via the proteasome, a protein involved in degrading unneeded or damaged proteins.

In vivo, combining WA with a series of ER stress aggravators enhanced apoptosis synergistically in tumor growth in PC xenografts.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "simultaneous suppression of 2 key intracellular protein degradation systems rendered PC cells vulnerable to ER stress, which may represent an avenue for new therapeutic combinations for this disease".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of pancreatic cancer, pending the result of a larger sample size and multicenter study

#Healthyfood #Ginger Suppresses the Inflammatory Cytokines that Cause Symptoms and Disability of Osteoarthritis, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Ginger may be considered a natural whole food to treat osteoarthritis with no side effects, some scientists suggested.

Osteoarthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease, as a result of the protective cartilage on the ends of your bones were worn and torn down over time. The disease affects millions of people worldwide.
In contrast to the general belief, osteoarthritis only damages the joints of hands, knees, but also cause inflammation of the joints in your hips and spine.

The condition is a slow development disease, often starts in the 40s and 50s and affects almost all people to some degree by age 80.

The common risk factors of osteoarthritis are aging, gender, improper healing of injured joint at a young age, obesity and bone deformity. However, people who have a job with tasks that place repetitive stress on a particular joint are associated with the onset of osteoarthritis in most industrial countries.

Dr. Berran Yucesoy, the lead author in the concerns of the repetitive occupation associated with the risk of osteoarthritis launched an investigation to examine the occupational that contributes to this debilitating condition.

The results of searching the medical data on PubMed using the search terms osteoarthritis, occupation, work, and genetics wrote, " One of the most common occupational risk factors for knee OA is heavy physical workload" and "Other risk factors include frequent exposure to several biomechanical stressors such bending of the knee, kneeling or squatting, standing for long hours (≥ 2 hours per day), walking ≥ 3 km/day, regular stair climbing, heavy lifting (≥ 10 kg), jumping, and vibration".

Believe it or not, the researcher continued, " a more than the five-fold greater risk of knee OA among workers ≥ 55 years who were exposed to a combination of heavy lifting (> 25 kg) and kneeling/squatting or climbing stairs".

If your occupation is in the group mentioned in the study, you are likely to develop osteoarthritis at a younger age. Please make sure you are taking all preventive measures to reduce the risk of the onset of the disease the later in life

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The pungent and kitchen spice has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find evidence that ginger powder consumption can relieve pain and inflammation due to specific anti-inflammatory phytochemical constituents, researchers at the joint investigation led by the Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences launched a study to examine the effect of ginger supplementation on proinflammatory factors.

The randomized double-blind placebo-controlled 3-month clinical trial investigating knee osteoarthritis includes 120 participants assigned to one of two groups: the ginger group (GG) or the placebo group (PG).

Participants in the GG intervention received capsules containing 500 mg of ginger powder, while PG participants received capsules filled with 500 mg of starch.

At 3 months, the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) cytokines were found to decrease substantially in the GG compared to the PG.

Dr. Mozaffari-Khosravi H, the lead scientist wrote in the final report " Ginger supplementation may have promising benefits for knee osteoarthritis".

Furthermore, the assessment of the clinical efficacy and safety of oral ginger for the symptomatic treatment of osteoarthritis (OA) by carrying out a systematic literature search followed by meta-analyses on selected studies in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing oral ginger treatment with placebo in OA patients aged >18 years also suggested that

* Ginger intake shows a statistically significant pain reduction with a low degree of inconsistency among trials.

* The ginger treatment group also demonstrates a statistically significant reduction in disability.

* Patients given ginger are more than twice as likely to discontinue treatment compared to placebo. And,

* Ginger was modestly efficacious and reasonably safe for the treatment of OA.

Taken altogether, through the inhibition of pro-inflammatory factors, ginger, and ginger supplement may be considered for the prevention and adjunct therapies combined with primary medicine for the treatment of osteoarthritis.
