#Herbal #Coltsfoot Reduces the Risk of #Colitis in Vivo, According to Researchers

By Kyle J. Norton

Colitis is a condition characterized by the inflammation of the inner lining of the colon.
The disease can be caused by infection, such as inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis(CD)), ischemic colitis, allergic reactions, and microscopic colitis.

Most cases of colitis are involved in the damage of the intestinal mucosal barrier, particularly to those of ulcerative colitis.

Epidemiologically, damage and a reduction of gut bacteria by dietary chemicals, such as antibiotics of the protective mucus layer and the underlying tissue by the poorly inactivated digestive proteases induced both UC and CD.

The intestinal mucosal barrier is the outermost inner layer of the lining of the intestines which plays an essential role to ensure the adequate containment of undesirable luminal contents within the intestine and preserves the ability to absorb nutrients.

Additionally, the intestinal mucosal barrier also processes various immunological mediators, including cytokines and chemokines stimulated by gut microbiota and host immune responses, thus maintaining a well-balanced relationship between gut microbes and the host immune system.

In other words, the intestinal mucosal barrier protects the colonic integrity by interacting with the gut microbiota and the immune response to prevent the inflammation of the colon that causes the onset of colitis.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used for thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), researchers examined the anti-colitis effect of Tussilagone (TSL), a major component of Tussilago farfara.

On mice subjected to acute colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS), tussilagone showed a significant protective effect by ameliorating weight loss, and colonic inflammatory damage.

Proteins associated with pro-inflammatory cytokines such as the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α & interleukin-6 and the activity of myeloperoxidase in colonic tissues were inhibited by tussilagone-treated mice.

Furthermore, tussilagone treatment reduced the numbers of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) in the induction of cytokines and increased the numbers of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) involved the production of antioxidant enzymes in nuclei of colonic tissues.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " tussilagone treatment attenuated DSS-induced colitis in mice through inhibiting the activation of NF-κB and inducing Nrf2 pathways, indicating that tussilagone is a potent therapeutic candidate for the treatment of intestinal ".

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the treatment of colitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #Fermented #Cucumbers in the Promotion of the Colonic and Digestive Health, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient for the prevention and treatment of neurodegeneration with no side effects, according to studies.
Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that play an essential role in the improvement of digestive functioning.

In other words, probiotics balanced the ratio of the gut microbiota by improving the levels of healthy organisms in the gut, particularly in people who are taking antibiotics, leading to the optimization of the digestive system in the absorption of nutrients for the body's needs such as supplying essential nutrients, synthesizing vitamin K, aiding in the digestion of cellulose, and promoting angiogenesis and enteric nerve function.

Where gut microbiota is the complex community of microorganisms that live in our gastrointestinal tracts.

Microbial imbalance or dysbiosis-induced intestinal inflammation as a result of overexpression of bad organisms in the gut has been found to utilize a complex arsenal of virulence factors to colonize and persist in the intestine, implicating the development of intestinal diseases.

Some virulence factors such as the genotoxin colibactin, produced by overexpression of bad bacteria in the gut were found to promote colorectal cancer and chronic intestinal inflammatory diseases.

Dr. Yu-Jie Zhang, the lead scientist in the examined the importance of gut bacteria on Human Health wrote, "Gut bacteria are an important component of the microbiota ecosystem in the human gut, which is colonized by 1014 microbes, ten times more than the human cells".
And, " they (imbalanced ratio of gut microbiota) can also be potentially harmful due to the change of their composition when the gut ecosystem undergoes abnormal changes in the light of the use of antibiotics, illness, stress, aging, bad dietary habits, and lifestyle. Dysbiosis of the gut bacteria communities can cause many chronic diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, cancer, and autism".

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae, and is native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

With an aim to find potential and natural compounds for the improvement of digestive health, researchers investigated the probiotic activity of cucumber.

According to the novel strain of lactic acid bacterium isolated from fermented cucumber, fermented carbohydrates such as sucrose, dextrose, and arabinose showed a significant gastroprotective effect against antibiotics, including ciprofloxacin, kanamycin, vancomycin.

Furthermore, the isolate displayed potential probiotic properties in the improvement of digestive health observed by hydrophobicity, autoaggregation, coaggregation, and in vitro cell adhesion ability.

Moreover, the isolate also exhibited resistance against bad bacteria and simulated gastric juice at pH 3.0.

Based on the findings researchers suggested that a novel strain of lactic acid bacterium isolated from fermented cucumber protected the digestive tract against the injection of antibiotics, inhibited the production of bad bacteria such as gram-positive bacterial and utilized the effects of prebiotics such as inulin and raffinose.

Dr. Shukla R, the lead scientist said, " These results indicate both probiotic property and the glucansucrase-producing ability of P. pentosaceus CRAG3".

In vitro, in the evaluation of the probiotic potentials of three Bacillus strains 437F, 1630F, and 1020G obtained from the traditional pickle researchers found that

* All strains only showed high acid, and bile tolerance but also exhibited antagonistic activity against various pathogens.

* All strains exhibited antioxidant activity, auto-, and co-aggregation ability, and surface hydrophobicity and attachment capacity against the Caco-2 cells were similar to those of well-known probiotic strains.

* All strains are safe without causing harm to healthy colon cells.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "With respect to their characteristics and safety aspect, these Bacillus species may have the potential to consider as probiotics for animal and/or human applications".

Taken altogether, cucumber may be considered supplements for the protection of digestive functioning, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #CarrotJuices Enhance the Immune Functioning, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Carrots and tomatoes and their major bioactive carotenoids may have a profound and positive effect on boosting immunity, some scientists suggested.

The results of the studies were carried out by numbers institutes in numbers of different differentiation, including the Institute of Nutritional Physiology, Federal Research Centre for Nutrition.

You can also view the abstract by clicking the links in the resources.

Immunity is a natural defense of organisms with an aim to protect the host to resist a particular infection or toxin through an expression of antibodies or sensitized white blood cells.

Carrot, a root vegetable with orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belongings to the family Apiaceae, native to Asia and Europe.

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belongings to family Solanaceae, native to South America.
Because of its health benefits, tomato is grown worldwide for commercial purposes and often in the greenhouse.

In the investigation of the effect of beta-carotene has been shown to enhance immune functions in humans, the Institute of Nutritional Physiology, Federal Research Centre for Nutrition launched a study to examine whether vegetables rich in carotenoids, such as beta-carotene or lycopene, exert any modulation of immune function in healthy humans.

The blinded, randomized, cross-over study, included male subjects on a low-carotenoid diet consumed 330 ml/day of either tomato juice(37.0 mg/day lycopene) or carrot juice (27.1 mg/day beta-carotene and 13.1 mg/day alpha-carotene) for 2 weeks with a 2-week depletion period after juice intervention.

Epidemiological studies suggested that consuming carotenoids from food sources may provide a variety of health benefits including a reduced incidence of cancers, risk of cardiovascular disease, and improved eye health,.......

Reading of the immune status was assessed by measuring the related activity of natural killer (NK) cells, secretion of cytokines ( IL-2, IL-4, TNFalpha), and proliferation by activated peripheral blood mononuclear cells((T cells, B cells, NK cells).

Natural killer cells are a type of white blood cells formed as a component of the innate immune system with function in inhibited microorganisms infected cells.

Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is a type of inflammatory cytokine with function in signaling molecule in the immune system to protect the body against bacterial and viral in the acute phase of infection.

Interleukin-4 (IL-4) is activated by lymphoid cells in the inflammatory cytokine critical for initiating humoral immunity against extracellular pathogens.

Both Interleukin-2 and 4 (IL-2and 4 ) play an important role in chronic inflammation and wound repair.

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) including, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, TNFα, cachexin, or cachectin) is a protein (cytokine) involved in systemic inflammation during the acute phase of infection?

At the end of the experiment, researchers found that
* Both juices treated participants demonstrate relatively fast responses in plasma carotenoid concentrations (p < 0.0002) without inducing concomitant changes in immune functions.

* Intake of both tomato and carrot juice displays a significant activity of immunity in the production of IL-2, NK cell cytotoxicity, and lymphocyte proliferation with maximum responses observed during depletion periods.

* In comparison to the secretion of other inflammatory cytokines, TNF alpha exerts only at the end of the first intervention period.

* During the course of innervation, both juices show insignificant effects in modulated the secretion of IL-4.

These results suggested that lower plasma carotenoid concentrations in the bloodstream may reduce the immune function in response to diseases caused by a bacterial and viral infection, particularly in the acute phase.

Occasional intake of tomato and carrot juice does not enhance body immunity, due to its function in time-delayed modulation of immune functions and its degradation caused by a number of factors, including heat, light, oxygen, acid, transition metal, or interactions with radical species.

The conclusion truly addressed the importance of carotenoids in modulated immune response in the protection of bodily injury or damage during the acute phase of infection through inhibiting pro-inflammatory overexpression in the induction of cytotoxicity and damage to nearby healthy cells.

Further to reaffirm the effects of consumption of carotenoid-rich vegetables on the immune system, the Institute of Nutritional Physiology, Federal Research Centre for Nutrition conducted a study of 23 non-smokers, male subjects, who were not restricted in their daily diet, except that they had to abstain from fruit and vegetables high in carotenoids throughout the whole study period with blood collected weekly from subjects after a 12 h fast.

The study was also divided into four periods, each lasting 2 weeks: * Weeks 1-2: low-carotenoid period;

* Daily consumption of 330 ml tomato juice (40 mg lycopene/d, 1.5 mg beta-carotene/d) (weeks 3-4),
* 330 ml carrot juice (21.6 mg beta-carotene/d, 15.7 mg alpha-carotene/d, 0.5 mg lutein/d) (weeks 5-6)
* 10 g dried spinach powder (11.3 mg lutein/d, 3.1 mg beta-carotene/d) (weeks 7-8).

According to the assessment of T-lymphocyte and secretion of immunoreactive cytokines, lower concentration due to consumption of a low-carotenoid diet exerted a significantly reduced proliferation of function immune system observed in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) cultured with concanavalin A.

At the end of the first 2 weeks of tomato juice consumption and until the end of the intervention period, researchers found that intake of tomato juice with abundant carotenoids induced an insignificant change in lymphocyte proliferation in compared to concentration at the end of the depletion period.

Similarly, the experiment also exerted a strong immune modulated effect in the assessment of the secretion of cytokines interleukin (IL)-2 and -4).

The dietary intervention improved the IL-2 and IL-4 secretion values. however, the levels of IL-2 and IL-4 were significantly suppressed after the low-carotenoid diet.

The results at the end of the period also expressed the similarity of other studies " After carrot juice and spinach powder consumption the cytokine secretion capacity of PBMC was not significantly different from that at the end of the depletion period".

Dr. Watzl B, the lead author after taking into account other co and confounders said, "The results of the present study indicate that a low-carotenoid diet reduces T-lymphocyte functions and addition of tomato juice restores these functions".

The unexplained changes in the plasma carotenoid concentrations probably severed as an indication that other phytochemicals or other mechanisms in tomato and carrot juice may have a strong implication in modulated immune response other than the cytokine secretion capacity of PBMC.

Taken together, tomato and carrot juice and their bioactive carotenoids may be considered as functional foods in boosting immune function against foreign organisms, particularly, in the acute phase of infection.

#Herbal #Cinnamon Extract in Prevention and Treatment of #Alzheimer's Diseases, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Adding spicy cinnamon into your diet may have a significant effect on blocking the onset of Alzheimer's Disease, a new study suggested.
Although cinnamon is best known for its anti-diabetic effect, spices also consist of certain chemical constituents associated to prevent insulin resistance(2).

The herb has been used in folk medicine as an anti-fungal and bacterial agent and to improve reproductive organs, prevent flatulence and intestinal cramping, and treat indigestion, diarrhea, bad breath, headache, migraine, etc.(3).

Alzheimer's disease is a brain disorder correlated with major reductions of neurons to the respective target areas, named after German physician Alois Alzheimer.

Alzheimer's destroys brain cells, causing cognitive modalities severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies, or social life.

Alzheimer's gets worse over time, and it is fatal.

According to statistics, over 25 million people in the world today are affected by dementia and most are suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

The exact causes of Alzheimer's disease are unknown. However, some researchers suggested that certain risk factors such as cigarette smoking, midlife high blood pressure and obesity, diabetes, cerebrovascular lesions, and psychosocial factors (high education, active social engagement, physical exercise, and mentally stimulating activity) are associated with the onset of the disease(10).

Some researchers suggested that people who are following a lifelong intake of the Western diet and are at higher risk due to family history should be aware of some early signs and symptoms such as memory loss, the difficulty of planning and solving problems, completing familiar tasks, determining time or place, finding the right words, misplacing items often. ... and difficulty making decisions.

If you experience some signs and symptoms above, please make sure to check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

In insulin resistance Winstar male rats induced by high fat/high fructose (HF/HFr), researchers found that injection of cinnamon (CN) alleviates the increases of mRNA associated with Alzheimer's such as PTEN, Tau, and amyloid precursor protein, through its neuroprotective activity associated with improved whole-body insulin sensitivity and related changes in the brain.(4).

The cinnamon aqueous extract has also been found to have the ability to inhibit tau aggregation in vitro and even induce dissociation of tangles isolated from AD brain, as well as sequestering highly reactive and toxic byproducts of oxidation, through protecting tau from abnormal modifications, according to the University of California(5).

PTEN is a tumor suppressor gene involved in the regulation of the cell cycle.

Tau protein found in neurons of the central nervous system, un-stabilize microtubules have been found in patients with Alzheimer's Disease.

Amyloid precursor protein plays an important role in the formation of synapses between neurons in the nervous system, showed to generate beta-amyloid (Aβ) in patients with Alzheimer's diseases

In cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease animal models, caused by the accumulation of soluble oligomeric assemblies of the β-amyloid polypeptide (Aβ), oral administration of the cinnamon extract (CEppt), enhanced the decrease of Aβ oligomers, reduction of plaques and improvement in cognitive behavior(6).

Some researchers suggested that the spice may be used as amyloid-beta aggregation blockers as a few approved drugs available to treat Alzheimer's disease(9) due to many potential drugs in the pipeline for the disease and other amyloid-associated illnesses may not be as promising as thought(8).

Taken altogether, cinnamon and its extract may have a protective effect in reducing risk and for treatment of Alzheimer's Disease, through reduction of the complication causes by metabolic syndromes such as obesity and diabetes.

According to DR. Georgakopoulou EA(7), Oral intake of Cinnamon may cause Stomatitis and a burning sensation in the mouth with a large amount. According to traditional Chinese medicine, overdoses of cinnamon can be toxic and damage the liver(1)(7).

#Herbal #CatsClaw Extract Kills #BreastCancer Cells by by Blocking #Cancer Cell Division in Vitro, Scientists Show

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a functional herb that has the potential to treat breast cancer without including any side effects, some studies suggested.
Most breast cancer irregular cell growth starts on the surface of the inner linings of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma).

At the later stage, after colonizing most parts of breast tissue, malignant cells can travel a distance far away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue or organs through fluid and blood circulation.

In Canada, the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during a lifetime before the age of 90 of a woman is 1/11.

The exact causes of breast cancer are unknown. However certain risk factors are found to associate to the early onset of the disease, including an increase in age, gender, early menstrual periods and late menopause, unhealthy diet and lifestyle, dense breast tissue,.. and genetic preposition.

However, women with the genetic mutation BRCA1 and BRCA found in 5-10% of all breast cancer cases in the United States. are at substantial risk to have breast cancer development.

According to the information provided by the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, out of the 3,886 women with mutation of gene BRCA1 and BRCA2 eligible for breast cancer risk analysis, 426 developed breast cancer during the study period, representing a odds relative risk ratio of 1.11.

The peak incidence of breast cancer was seen in women 41–50 years old for BRCA1 mutation carriers and those 51–60 years old for BRCA2 mutation carriers.

The cumulative risk estimates for developing breast cancer by age 80 were 72% for BRCA1 carriers and 69% for BRCA2 carriers.

Therefore, women who carry the mutation of gene BRCA1 and BRCA2 may want to take preventive measures such as intensive early surveillance, use of chemoprevention, and prophylactic surgery to the risk of breast cancer onset.

Cat's claw found in the tropical jungles of South and Central America, is a genus Uncaria, belonging to the family Rubiaceae.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine for over two thousand years as a tonic, contraceptive, anti-inflammatory, and infectious agent, and to treat diarrhea, rheumatic disorders, acne, diabetes, cancer, and diseases of the urinary tract, etc...

In the reaffirming of the use of herbal Cat's claw as anti-cancer activity in South-American folk medicine, researchers at the Istituto Nazionale per lo Studio e la Cura dei Tumori launched an investigation to examine the extract anti-breast cancer effect on a human breast cancer cell line (MCF7).

Application of the exacts display a potency in the inhibition of MCF7 through the cytostatic effects against cell growth and division in the breast cancer cell line

Furthermore, the Cat's claw extracts a strong antimutagenic activity by restoring the cell DNA to a healthy level.

Moreover, the extracts and fractions also exert a direct antiproliferative activity at the doses of 10 mg/ml and 20 mg/ml on an IC50 by blocking cell division through cell cycle arrest.

Moreover, the concentration of 100 mg/ml of two active fractions isolated from Cat's Claw inhibited 90% of breast cancer cells in MCF7.

These results suggested Cat's extract and its active fractions may be considered secondary therapy for the treatment of breast cancer.

However, due to the limitation of the above studies, additional data collection large example size, and multi-center studies performed with human consumption of whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of Cat's claw anti-breast cancer possibilities.

#Herbal #Anise Extract Reduces the Risk of Liver Toxicity, According to Researchers

By Kyle J. Norton

Anise may have a potential and substantial protective effect to prevent liver damage and diseases, some scientists suggested.

Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belongings to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic,...

Chemical constituents
Anethole, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.

Liver disease is a medical condition characterized by damage or injury of the liver tissues, affecting 1 in 4 Canadians, according to the statistic. The disease can also be inherited genetically from the parent.
In the evaluation of the liver protective effect of Anise in the mice induced liver toxicity by injection of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), researchers found that Anise application significantly reduced the production of reactive oxygen species in the liver tissue in initiated a chain reaction to induced tissue damage through its antioxidants activities, observed by oxidative stress markers.

The hepatoprotective effects of Anise not only protected against liver necrosis but also correlated with elevated serum IL-6 cytokine in response to infections and tissue injuries and in contributing to host defense through the stimulation of acute phase infection without inducing inflammation and activated hepatic STAT3 in facilitated lipid peroxidation.

Administered Anise also reduced oxidative stress in the expression of several oxidative markers including liver Malondialdehyde (MDA), serum Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels through increased levels of hepatic antioxidants such as SOD and catalase in compared to the nontreated group.

Additionally, in the study of a total of 36 Sprague-Dawley rats allocated into five groups group I, II, and III received an isotonic saline solution, olive oil, and CCl4, respectively and group IV received both Silibinin and CCl4, and group V with injection of Anise seed extract (PFO) and CCl4, researchers at the end study found that rats treated with CCL4 exhibited a significant liver damage through observation of levels of makers of liver AST and ALT.

Rats treated with Anise seed extract (PFO) revealed lower serum AST and ALT levels in compared to those in the CCl4 group, although this was not as low as those in the silibinin group.

Moreover application of concentrations (1-1000 µg/ml) of essential oil and hydroalcoholic and n-hexane extracts isolated from Pimpinella anisum (anise), 1 h before the addition of 100 mM of CCl4, researchers indicated that liver cytotoxicity induced by injection of CCL4 was significantly decreased by the antioxidant activity of n-hexane extract with concentrations of 10-50 µg/ml.

However, the administration of anise extracts and essential oil was found surprisingly in induced liver toxic effects with concentrations over 50 mµ/ml.

This result suggested that Pimpinella anisum. exhibited hepatoprotective effect against a foreign substance in precipitated liver damage in doses dependent manner.

In other words, overdoses of essential oil and hydroalcoholic and n-hexane extracts isolated from Anise can cause acute liver toxicity.

Taking all together, Anise with abundant phytochemicals may be considered as a functional herb for reduced risk and assisted standard therapy for the treatment of liver diseases, depending on further evaluation.

#Herbal #CascaraSagrada's #Emodin BlocksNew Formation of Blood Vessels for #BreastCancer Proliferation, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural ingredient isolated from a herbal plant that processes a significant effect in reducing the risk and treatment of breast cancer, some studies suggested.
Breast cancer (malignant breast neoplasm) is a medical and chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the breast tissue.

Most cases of breast cancer start either in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.

There are also rare cases of breast cancer that start in other areas of the breast

The cause of breast cancer is the result of the alternation of DNA of the cells in the breast.

According to statistics, in 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the US alone and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8.

Genetic preposition, one of the prevalent risk factor associated with the increased risk of breast cancer has been under intensifying study in scientists over the world over a few decades ago, suggested that women who carry the mutated genes BRCA1 and 2 have 60% most likely risk to develop breast cancer before the age of 70.

Another prevalent and most mentioned risk factor associated with the risk of the disease is obesity.

Dr. Manuel Picon‐Ruiz, the lead author, in the concern of the correlated increased incidence of breast cancer among obese women launched an investigation to examine whether obesity is associated both with a higher risk of developing breast cancer, particularly in postmenopausal women, and with worse disease outcome for women of all ages.

After taking into account co and confounder, the doctors wrote, "The Million Women Study followed 1.2 million UK women ages 50 to 64 years for a mean of 5.4 years, including 45,037 with breast cancer, and identified a nearly 30% higher risk of developing postmenopausal breast cancer with obesity". and "(But) a large body of evidence indicates that, although obesity is inversely associated with receptor‐positive breast cancer development before menopause".

Interestingly, the results strongly indicated, obesity is a risk factor of breast cancer in postmenopause but a reduced risk factor before menopause.

Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America.

The herbal plant bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc., effect.

Besides the main compound of anthraquinones, the herb also contains anthraquinone glycosides, (emodin, frangulin, iso-emodin, aloe-emodin, and chrysophanol), rhein, aloin, malic acid, tannic acid, cascarosides A, B, C, and D, and hydroxy anthracene derivatives (HAD), etc.

In the finding a natural compound or whole food which process the potency for the treatment of breast cancer with little or no side effects compared to those of conventional chemo drugs, researchers conducted a joint study led by the China Medical University to examine the anti-breast cancer effect of Emodin.

Human breast cancer cells Bcap-37 and ZR-75-30.were used in the study

The cell viability following emodin treatment was assessed by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay.

Application of Emodin showed a strong effect in the inhibition of the growth and induction of apoptosis of breast cancer cells Bcap-37 and ZR-75-30 in a time- and dose-dependent manner.

The inhibitory activity was attributed to Emodin in reducing the level of a protein associated with inhibiting apoptosis and promoting oncogenesis, and proteins and antibodies associated with programming cell death and enhancing apoptosis.

Dr. CONG ZU the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders said, "These findings indicate that emodin induces growth inhibition and apoptosis in human breast cancer cells. Emodin may be a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of breast cancer".

In mice bearing EO771 or 4T1 breast tumors, researchers at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine examine the effects of Emodin against breast cancer through varied mechanisms.

Application of Emodin showed a significant effect in the attenuation tumor growth by inhibiting macrophage infiltration and M2-like polarization, in promoting cancer cell growth, invasion, metastasis and accompanied by increased immune white blood cells in the host and reduced the new formation of blood vessels for the cancer proliferation.

The inhibition of the promotion of cancer cell growth, invasion, metastasis by emodin was associated with deactivation of genes on the promoters of M2-related genes in tumor-associated macrophages.

Dr. Iwanowycz S, at the final report, "emodin acts on both breast cancer cells and macrophages and effectively blocks the tumor-promoting feed-forward loop between the two cell types, thereby inhibiting breast cancer growth and metastasis".

Taken altogether, Herbal Cascara Sagrada processed abundant bioactive compound Emodin may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and an adjunct therapy combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of breast cancer.
